Umm, so is anyone taping it?

I'm gonna be away, but I'd love to borrow a copy. I'll burn you something in exchange, or something.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Cue burning jokes. honestly, if you're not totally LITERAL about everything on this site, someone'll make a gag out of your thread.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It's gonna be full of Vines/Datsuns/Hives. Must admit I find it hard to muster too much enthusuasm for Peel these days.

Venga, Sunday, 15 December 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Peel is playing the vines et al? What is the world coming to?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 15 December 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't have to be stuff he's played - just stuff the listeners vote for. Last year, there were plenty of Strokes tracks, although I don't think the programme had actually given them any airtime.

Jason J, Sunday, 15 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Stupid public.

Callum (Callum), Sunday, 15 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Not so, Jason. Peel's a big fan of the Strokes.

Venga, Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, OK. I don't often listen to the show, but always try to hear the Festive 50, and last year I was struck by the amount of times I heard Peel mumble "Don't think we've actually been playing this, but..." in his genial Grandfatherly way.

Jason J, Monday, 16 December 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

So...uhhh, is anyone taping it?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

When's it on then?

Bill E (bill_e), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

26 Dec - Festive 50 Five Hour Special
John Peel

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers!

Bill E (bill_e), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Pulp's "Common People" came top in 1995. I think that was one of the very few records that united EVERYONE, ie even those Peel diehards who would have dismissed it as "a Mark Goodier record" probably loved it on the side.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

'five hours' ? !!
why couldn't it be on xmas day ?
remember last year on xmas day between
7 + 9 radio 1 played that subsequently much much
sought after 'hang the dj' soulwax set,
so this year - who knows ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

works out at about 412M if encoded as 192k mp3. should easily be able to encode in real time using anything manufactured in the last 5 years and will easily fit on a cdr (as opposed to what? 4 c90s or two minidiscs in mono).

unfortunately i'll be at parents and unable to do anything other than listen to it on a tinny portable radio so i'd like a copy if anyone's doing it (am willing to replace original cdr (30p, woo!) and refund postage and make copies for anyone else further down the tree)

andy

koogs, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

This year on Xmas Day - Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems, I think.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
ok, i did this, went the sky digital -> video recorder -> 2.5G of wav files route in the end and result is listenable but not archive quality by any means. unfortunately it got chopped up by file size rather than time so i have 27 or so 100Mb chunks. would like to chop them up so they are 10 songs at a time but don't have any audio software that can handle such huge files. ideas?

koogs, Monday, 6 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
The Festive 50 for 2003 starts soon

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

When? Where/How can I hear it?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

50. Volts - retro rock from East Anglia ZZZZZ

49. Freddy Fresh - he has been making music for 3 decades

48. Blizzard Boys - happy hardcore stomper

47. Camera Obscura - the indie pop cardigan wearing mafia have voted them in. Apparently these lot have stolen the twee crown off B & S.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

tune in via the web

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the link!

What song's playing now? Sounds like they're saying "Rocks are slow now." I kinda like it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this the Super Furry Animals? It sounds like the Super Furry Animals.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

46. this sounds like Super Furry Animals - probably is. Yep That Welsh twang, Geir loves the psychedelic orchestral melodies. It's got to be melodic.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

45. Grandmaster Gareth? - tuneless rap garbage - probably sez Geir.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

44. This is Japanese - Hyper Kiniko? jap-fem vox tokyoooooo..go away.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah these last couple songs aren't as good as the Super Furries one.

So, John Peel just picks these out himself and plays 'em counting down? No outside help at all?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

43. This sounds like Squeeze/ Tom Robinson/ Thomas Dolby... clever art-pop/ new wave 20 - 25 years late. Who is it? heard all before but quirky...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No it's the listeners voting for tracks

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

previous years http://www.rocklist.net/festive50.htm

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And how do the listeners know about all these obscure songs? I'd think they'd all vote for the really popular stuff. Y'know... Kylie, Strokes, Stripes, 'cetra.

This is cool! I'm gonna listen to this for the rest of the night.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the listeners of the Peel show - so expect quirky entries that do not reflect sales/ NME coverage

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

43. B & S... it was B& S ! HA !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit! "Born in the USA"!!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This might be Ballboy. I am so very out of the looop though

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's about time SOMEBODY made this song the depressing-as-hell "war sucks" lament that it should be.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

that will be the cardigan wearing indie pop mafia...voting in their scores

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

38. was Ballboy

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In 1998 I seem to remember that virtually EVERY SINGLE TRACK was a gloriously investigate-able sparkly gem. What happened?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

27 . The French on Too Pure records

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the fall is the ultimate festive 50 band.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It was fun. Will tune in tomorrow. Cheers!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet "Theme from Sparta FC" is number one.

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

too much camera obscura sounds like a fabulous thing. don't understand the french love though.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder how many 'more twee indie rubbish' will the DJ come up with today?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 25 December 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard a lot of these. Last year's fifty was rather too obvious for me, but then I haven't listened to Peel in probably the last year or so.

The Camera Obscura tracks that have got in thus far are two of the weaker tracks off the album, which as a whole is fantasmagoric. They're probably going to have a few more in the top half.

Super Furries was the album closer Slow Life, which is one of the best things on Phantom Power. Golden Retriever will probably be top 20 then.

The Keys used to be Murry The Hump, and they should've stayed that way.

Grandmaster Gareth is the lead singer of Misty's Big Adventure, who are from Birmingham and are amazing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(Listening to BBC Radio One) This flipping guitar solo by The Darkness is going to push the rest of the Festive 50 back by three hours or so.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

whose listening to the festive 50 part 2 tonight?

roll call...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm missing something on telly for it. But what the hey.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm here. I probably won't recognise any of the records, mind...

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Which song from out of nowhere by a band that don't feature anywhere else on the list gets #1 this time?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be off an album I own as well.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, no it won't, it'll be off one I buy early next year.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, it's a guitar band from Bury-St-Edmunds on Peel. There's a shocker.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, two records time.

It's going to be Seven Nation Army, isn't it?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

25 . Futureheads - sunderland

swygart fave band

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That should have read:

25) The Futureheads - First Day

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

XTC crossed with Gang of 4

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

but the telly is in the lounge where it is warm and the PC is at the top of the stairs which isn't, also chair v uncomfortable. i like this futureheads track though, the video's rather odd also. although they don't get fast enough at the FASTER FASTER bits for my liking

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Got to #57 in the proper not-rigged-by-people-in-Bury charts too.

Lookylookylooky...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno this at 24.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

24..retro guitar rawk...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

also surely he pre-recorded the show?

Says he's doing it live. It sounds to me like he is: he has a different tone of voice on pre-recorded stuff... Really, he does, you can always tell...

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

live isdn connection from peel acres

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty sure he is doing it live.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

This isn't very good. Is it Longwave or someone?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

this is sounds like a yanky band. NOT LONGWAVE

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

24) The Party Of One - Shotgun Funeral

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. Peel almost apologises for no 24... "Cute white kids with guitars", "Your choice, not mine"

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What did YOU vote for this year, kids? Do you usually feel obliged to indie-fy your picks?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

do they rave about this on "Bowlie forum"?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, that should be:

23) ballboy - I Gave Up My Eyes To A Man Who Was Blind

Unusually concise for them.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i voted for Junior Boys: Birthday, Killing Joke: Implant and Zongamin: Spiral

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You're hating this, aren't you?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't understand the appeal of twee indie pop

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair, it's not up to All The Records On The Radio Are Shite or I Hate Scotland.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

No, don't know this either... it's probably Miss Black America. Almost certainly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

..22... amateur punk that sounds like xeroxed buzzcocks

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

or undertones

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

They just referenced Dublin bands, so that most likely does rule out MBA.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

this track sounds like it was made in 1978

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the revs? they are from dublin? ronan hates them. is it them?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

22) The Undertones - Oh Please

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh fuck, this is The Mars Volta, isn't it?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey, the Undertones! I didn't realise they were still going.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

They've been going round with a new singer for a while, but they must finally have done an album with him.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope there are some ladies at some point further up the chart

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex - Melys have released an album in the past year. Chances are good.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Belleville Rendez-Vous was great, wasn't it?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

All the Hefner fans I know hate The French.

This isn't that bad.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The French are usually more bloopy than this maybe. Dunno though. His voice is fractionally less irksome and more strange than hayman but not by much

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

do these dorky fans of the french organise a block vote? via mailing lists

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Bit XFM filler track, but decent.

Maybe it's The Keys.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it's rubbish whatever

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What happened in the second bit of Eastenders?
Alfie's decree absolute came through and they got married after all; Phil and Den made a deal and it ended with Phil leaving the square.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

that voice..ghastly

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Things learnt from Soulseek - Futureheads fans have better things to do than I do on Xmas night.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

19) The Broken Family Band - At The Back Of The Chapel
18) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

19 broken family band - ///who are they?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Is rubbish, yes. Is there any chance that The Silures will sneak in later on?

MAPS MAPS MAPS

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the BFB were meant to be alt-country. Hmm.

But hey! Maps!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Martian - they are from Cambridge.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

maps...this a typical xfm/ 6 music playlist track

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

And are supposedly alt-country. On the evidence of that, only one of those things is true.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I still really like this. So long as I never ever ever own a copy of it, I hope I continue to do so

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It is gorgeous.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They were naff on Jools Holland last night, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet this a big track at student indie discos

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you're confusing that with 'Disco Down'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

17) The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I got the Michel Gondry DVD today, it makes them Stripes so much more palatable than they usually are

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

peel fuck up

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

First Peel-up of the evening - #17 is something else by The White Stripes.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And not Seven Nation Army.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, this is wank. at least Seven Nation Army has sleek giganticismness meganess in its favour

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic Peel! Has he played anything at the wrong speed yet? I suppose it's less likely with CDs....

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

17) The White Stripes - Black Mouth

Possibly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno this either.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

_Math_, I think.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

this sounds yanky? black keys?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The song may be called Even Stevens.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

retro bluesy rock...boring

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant the WS song was called "Black Math".

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds like rillyrilly shoestring Chilli Peppers. It's horrible. I miss the COWCUBE years

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Soulseek suggests this is The Lucksmiths. I don't agree, somehow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

those riffs have been used a thousand times before

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

SD - ah right, didn't hear the 'Math' bit properly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i am surprised that classic rock gets votes from peel listeners.. this is tedious

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This is Pluramon, then?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand why records like this are so few'n'far between among all the swampy blues cack in this list, they're so obviously, um, better

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"You support Rangers and Man United."

God bless Gordon McIntyre.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the title song to the album

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

This isn't very good either but I mind the schmindie less than the blueswank. Agree that I Hate Scotland was muchmuch better than this, what was their thinking behind going almost exclusively acoustic-y ever since?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

this is very halfman halfbiscuit ..you know.. football references, story telling..

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The keyboardist has left to move to London with her fiance.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the galaxie 500 cover should have made the list.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this another Cat Power?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

15) Vive La Fete - Noir Desir
14) ballboy - The Sash My Father Wore

This is Nina Nastasia.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

13, unlucky for some... who is this?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

slocore

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

there is another ballboy album out soon so they will dominate the list next year too?

this is dull

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahah, I seem to have extreme difficulty differentiating between the two. I like this better than the Cat Power one last night, I think

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I'd listened to this album more than I did. Why did I do that so often this year...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Nina Nastasia, You, Her and Me.

(She was fantastic live a couple of months back.)

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

12) Melt Banana - a very long title, ending in 'Hand'
11) Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby

Surely no more Stripes after this?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I must have a longer delay on audio than WBS, so I'm still hearing the end of Melt Banana when I see his announcement of the next song.

(The problem is much worse when listening to football commentary, everyone in the chatroom goes "Gerrin!" and I'm still listening to some meaningless midfield messing around.)

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahh.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

it's very retro this track..the long reverb on those guitars: power pop with yanky vox

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Google tells me this is:

The Crimea, Baby Boom

I have never heard of it! Who votes for this???

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Lottery winners on acid this year ? No 1 if it was.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i didn't know they made music like this anymor (#8). i like the effect on his guitar, kinda makes it sound like a keyboard, i guess it's just e-bow plus really tight flange. wow crappy indie singing haha, i forgot all about that. who is this? i bet you it's someone i like.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

someone wrote something lengthy about HMHB in the ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS bit of the coffee break bit in the Daily Mail a month or so back about their "wacky" song titles, so even my dad has heard of them now

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't all of their songs exactly like this?

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

effects pedals galore

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

so were godspeed

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think so, no. well, i've only ever met two mogwai fans and one was from middlesbrough and the other from devon. i did meet stuart br4ithwaite once though at a lift to experience gig, that was a great show. smoke and mirrors!

add julee cruise on top of this and quieten the distortion a little => pluramon with guitars.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

nar i went off mogwai when they stopped their very quiet/very loud thing

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

God bless senses of humour.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember their feud with Add N to (x)?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i reckon mogwai need to feminize themselves..draft in ethereal type female singer for next rekkord...time to move on

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This is going to be a 14-minute-r, isn't it?
A mere 08:27. It just seems like aeons.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

BACK FROM THE BRINK by Jamie McKendrick

1 like the time I went to sleep while driving
2            and began to dream that there was something
3            wrong with the car---the noise it made
4            was ominous like liquid looking

5            for a hairline crack, some brittle chink
6            it meant to rip wide open or explode
7            so I drove it in my dream to the mechanic's
8            ---a shoggly booth he'd roofed with zinc---

9            where he looked it over, shook his head
10          and told me that the problem was electric
11          though luckily his friend across the road
12          (and here I must have steered across the road)

13          would fix it. But his friend said what I'd need
14          was a real maestro in hydraulics
15          ---and one with wings at least if, hearing Greek,
16          I hadn't slammed my foot down on the brake.

bearsuit rock! quickspace copyists reprazent!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

much much cuter than bis

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

4) The Undertones - Thrill Me

It's no Mars Bars, for sure.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Google (again) tells me the Undertones have a single called "Thrill Me", so I guess this is it.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

this is like the last one only they got to the effects pedals sooner

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Silver record sleeves are to be applauded but every copy I saw of the Mogwai album was amazingly fingerprinty, which single-handedly detracted from their GRAVITAS in 2003. And also they are rubbish.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

3) Mogwai - Hunted By A Freak

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

surely junior boys will be top?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I do rather like this track, I must admit.

The CD of "Happy Songs" came with a version of Cubase with this track preloaded, and you could play around with it and create a remix, which was kind of fun.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Top twoo. Oooh.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)
