Nardwuar The Human Serviette. Annoying one note joke as Sean claims or the best person for deflating egos.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he's classic. Highlights include Telling Boris Yelstien to "keep on rocking in the free world" and then asking him "of all the world leaders, who wears the biggest pants?", asking The Strokes about the importance of great cheeckbones in the band, selling a Red Fox doll to a very stoned Snoop Doggy Dog, asking Dan Quail who is the Prime Minister of Canada and having him get it wrong, asking Beck why people should care about him and not his hear, asking Timothy Leary if drug users get more chick or Henry Rollins if he has a soup can shaped dick.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

snoop dogg stole the redd foxx doll! sonic youth busted his records, too! there's the pepper thing, too. and the sean lennon interview is good.

he's pretty good but you never get to really enjoy it when he's on muchmusic. the going coastal and much on demand interview bits are too short. and he's kind of started being just a zany character. he's really a pretty good interview guy, though. he's my favorite interview guy ever, i think. it's neat to hear him pull out some super-obscure question.

they could delete one episode of becoming from the schedule and fit in a nardwuar show.

d k (d k), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

You could just listen to his show on the CITR (via real audio no doubt) if you need more of the human serviette.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Very poor. Chris Morris did this sort of thing a billion times better years ago.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 30 December 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

the chrétien clip is classic

dyson (dyson), Monday, 30 December 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the first question he asked Jean:
Mr. Chretien, regarding Suharto, there's a song out there right now by a punk band called The Nomads called "The Suharto Stomp." Earlier today, as well, at UBC, there were an incredible amount of protesters. Do you think, Mr. Chretien, if you were, say, forty years younger, that you too would be writing punk songs and protesting against APEC?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Nardwuar was doing it long before Chris Morris, actually, though that's nothing against Morris who is also good (though lots more self-important than brilliantly self-effacing Nardwuar). I heart Nardwuar, esp. as a music journalist -- I read an article by him in some punk 'zine or another and was really surprised/delighted by how well he could turn a phrase, cover a lot of ground in nice compact sentences, etc.

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Nardwuar is an insanely knowledgeable guy when it comes to music, but insane is the key word here. I just find his persona incredibly grating and I think he's the music journalism version of a Saturday Night Live sketch sometimes: he takes one lame thing (ie. Tommy Lee "honking the horn") and then stretches it out far too long. Narwuar's Chretien ambush was good because it was clever and it was short. Nardwuar's full-length interviews are tedious. What that boy needs is a REALLY GOOD EDITOR.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i drank with him, and told him about the christopher wool series of paintings inspired by george clinton

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved when he ambushed "legendary rock producer" Kim Fowley at like the Juno awards or something. Fowley was up to the task. Nardwuar asks him something about great rock bands and Fowley says Zeppelin are the best "they are all very highly intelligent". I remember a funny clip of him approaching Bob Denver and greeting him with "hey little buddy!" That and the Yeltsin (classic) are about all I can recall of herr serviette.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

New Evaporators album is pretty good, but best of all has lotsa good clips.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Friday, 16 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Contrast his interview with Lydia Lunch with the one he did with Courtney Love. It reveals that one has a sense of humor and the other is basically a twit.

I do know that most of his releases are also available on 8-track.

Classic!
If one were to make a CD-R of all the funniest interviews (as in funny to listen to) what would be the essentials? Sometimes it's hard to tell just by reading the transcripts. I've got the Nirvana mp3, the Slayer one seems worth a download, what else?

Total classic. Aside from being funny, he actually does a lot of research into his subjects and constantly comes up with questions that leave them shocked at what he knows... Well, I think that David Cross says it best at 2:10 here:

I watched a couple last night also.. the lady gaga one was cool bc I learned that she loves new kids on the block & she's never heard of andrew wk.. the nirvana one was uncomfortable and as if I needed another reason to dislike courtney love, she refers to Sloan as "The sloan band" at least twice.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

to be honest i watched that last night and i thought courtney was far more normal and courteous than kurdt or noveselic, unless you are just bound and determined to hate her

he is my city's finest, his band the evaporators was one of my favorite live acts when i was a teenager, and he's done so much for vancouver's music scene. when my friend was starting to release albums narduwar was willing to spend hours on the phone with him giving advice about DIY music. he talks normal when he's not in character, it's actually a little jarring to see the switch

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 March 2011 06:15 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't realise that he'd done so much. My favourites are the earlier interviews - the one with sonic youth for instance.

historyyy (prettylikealaindelon), Thursday, 24 March 2011 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

It's a fact that he has done more for local music than practically anyone else. He's put on hundreds of gigs (mostly all-ages) interviewed or showcased pretty much every little band that makes an effort to contact him, helped god knows how many musicians in thousands of ways and done more to promote the history of Cdn punk/rock than anyone.

I quibble with the last sentence though. He is generally less shrill and less confrontational in real life but he's *never* "not in character". He is always Nardwuar.

And he's going to call you up and say "Hey wait I would have done some interviews" and then Rollins will feel left out and do the same thing and you can have the revised edition with everyone's stories at last and retire rich and famous. (I like thinking this is how the world must work.)

It's fun to watch the reactions he elicits on them but really he's not that impressive. Most of the thing that makes up his act is throwing out random and obscure trivia at the artists and watching them struggle to remember it and perhaps appear impressed at someone investing that much time in looking up stuff about them. The reaction is natural and sometimes entertains the artists simply because they're used to people asking the same questions all the time and it feels refreshing to have someone bring out some rare records and ask you about that first band or bad haircut you had.

yes, sometimes this ^^ but stuff like a groupie's report on Jack White's style in bed, or a totally batshit, off-the-wall string of connections between Slipknot, Ross Robinson, some bass player, Vanilla Ice and Naughty by Nature, is not really designed to "impress" -- more like "provoke," see how much an artist can take before breaking down on camera (Jack White clearly can hang; Slipknot guy w/ long nose, not so much)

The reaction he got out of the otherwise placid Dave Rowntree of Blur in 2003 was definitely something, eh? Hmm...via FB, a friend posted this:

If you haven't heard this week's Nardwuar/WFMU podcast, I can't recommend it enough. After half an hour of badgering Ian MacKaye - mostly about a Fugazi show from 1991 - Ian finally snaps and gently but devastatingly punctures Nardwuar's whole persona, playing the part of a kindly uncle who can't stand to see you act foolish in public anymore. It actually left me a little shaken....The most amazing thing is Nardwuar DOES NOT GET IT. It truly is like screaming at a wall.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

The most amazing thing is Nardwuar DOES NOT GET IT. It truly is like screaming at a wall.

Wouldn't acknowledging Ian's criticism require breaking persona?

Maybe the reason for Ian's annoyance is that he's had to endure the schtick for four or five interviews. By now he may have been hoping for a much deeper conversation. Nardwuar gets his best reactions when the musician is thrown off guard by his knowledge and generosity.

jim, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, in 20 years of listening to Nardwuar I have never heard an interviewee give him as severe a dressing down as that.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

Said it before but..."Nardwuar" is not a persona. He's a real person who behaves and talks like that all the time.

If that's the case why was Mackaye so disappointed that his friend (as he repeatedly called him) disappeared when the recorder went on?

boxall, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:07 (thirteen years ago)

eh, that wasn't that bad. nardwuar interviews obviously more fun when he's interviewing someone who has a sense of humor. or a stoned rapper. ian didn't "snap". he just wants everyone to be plain like the amish.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

i get if people find ian's "i am mr reasonable with constructive criticism for you" bit condescending, but considering narduwar - in the middle of his usual nonsense barrage - got unwarrantedly harsh and guilt-trippy about a 20 year old concert - i don't get how anybody can think mackaye was being an asshole here.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:08 (thirteen years ago)

it is kinda like that superfan thing where someone sees their idol in public and says: hey you probably don't remember this *and then goes into looooong dull anecdote about meeting idol decades ago and some "weird" thing that happened that they have thought about ever since it happened and the idol has no fucking clue what they are talking about*. and usually that creates an awkward moment. at least ian remembered the show!

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

and know nardwuar has been thinking about the fugazi show he set up since the day after the show.

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but this is like their 3rd/4th interview. he went ham on a regular guest in a format that already has them off balance, he got some relatively considered criticism considering.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

The Lydia Lunch/Exene Cervenka interview is classic.

"You don't like the past, do you Lydia?"

"Listen Nardo..."

jim, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

i think if someone wrote a blog rant saying he wouldn't be able to put on shows again, despite turning a profit and getting a thank-you note, because the band had been mean to him about the acoustics, we'd be pissing on that person from a great height. and this is someone making that argument 20 years later.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

I think you're overlooking something very basic here, which is the Narduar character is supposed to be kind of obsessive and annoying. It's comedy.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

It's often more than comedy, his method can yield great interviews. Ian's not the guy to try it with though.

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

dud

zvookster, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

i'd say it's a pretty good method on ian -- can you think of any other method that would elicit an endorsement for bananas?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

overlooking the comedy would be saying "why is this asshole talking about k-stew and junkyard?"

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

and yeah, ian's mostly game for this stuff in his usual stiff way. if it wasn't for the "remember when you were mean to me in 1991?" bit i'm sure nard wouldn't have gotten the "i wish we drank tea together and spoke like adults" critique.

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

nardwuar drinking tea with snoop is a good premise.
sorry snoop LION.

i don't think it's any mystery why naruwar's interviews with ppl who are a part of the 80s punk scene that he was a part of have a different vibe, more adversarial vibe, than the ones he does w/rappers or newer artists...newer ppl see him as this loveable wacky guy and for the 80s ppl more accustomed to that kinda punk humor bit he plays as being sort of faux naive and dickish under the veil of being an innocent

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

when nardwuar was doing a radio interview with harlan ellison and he dropped some news that a colleague had died and ellison was dubious at first before having to hang up for a bit to process this, nardwuar wasn't doing a sing-songy voice, but it was still nardwuar foisting a nonstop stream of trivia at a guy. so i imagine nardwuar is never really not "on" but he dials it back maybe 20%?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

Do you guys think Nardwuar doesn't translate well to other parts of the world?

I showed someone in Los Angeles his videos and he said, "Why does he talk that way?" And had a really confused look. His shtick totally went over his head.

I knew a guy whose friend's room mate was Nardwuar. Apparently, he never got out of character. I believe that, but I've also heard people say that he does go out of character some times. The thing about this last part is that I think people mean he is just less in character, but he seems to have fully embraced it 100% of the time. If you listen to or watch him in the 80s or early 90s, you can see his persona transforming into what would now be his staple character. Just my thoughts.

And Nardwuar has some really classic moments. His knowledge on the Canadian/Vancouver punk/metal scene is incredible.

On the weekend Nard had a stroke while out at a local show. Not sure if this is similar or connected to the brain aneurysm that almost killed him a few years ago. Hopes & prayers etc. This town will be a hell of a lot darker without him.

I've always known shave and a haircut, from Looney Tunes cues on down/up. The wiki informs me that, among other facts:

The tune has been used innumerable times as a coda or ending in musical pieces. It is strongly associated with the stringed instruments of bluegrass music, particularly the 5-string banjo. Earl Scruggs often ended a song with this phrase or a variation of it. On the television show The Beverly Hillbillies, musical cues signifying the coming of a commercial break (cues which were in bluegrass style) frequently ended with "Shave and a Haircut". It is the most popular bluegrass run, after the G run.

Johnny's Theme, the music that opened The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, famously ended with the "shave and a haircut" flourish every weeknight for 30 years and 4,531 episodes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hcqb3hAmr8

Les Paul and Mary Ford's Capitol recording of "Magic Melody" concluded with the phrase minus the last two notes ("two bits"). Responding to complaints from disc jockeys, Capitol in 1955 released "Magic Melody Part 2"—consisting solely of the missing notes—on a 45, said to be the shortest tune on record/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2O06pa9mjU

The original version of "Love and Marriage" by Frank Sinatra (recorded for Capitol Records in 1955) ends with the tune.

I had to Google it myself. I guess the actor was on Hot Ones, and compared the host to Nardwar, positively.

sorry, yeah the hot ones show. nardwuar on that program would be amazing.

Yeah tbh it was a very cryptic and misleading post...

Evan, Friday, 15 July 2022 14:01 (three years ago)

"Magic Melody - Part II" even has a discogs entry:
https://www.discogs.com/release/22510415-Les-Paul-Mary-Ford-Magic-Melody-Part-II

The label lists the time as "one second". There's a bit of debate as to whether it's shorter than a split 7" with Napalm Death's "You Suffer" on the first side and Electro Hippies "Mega Armageddon Death Part 3" on the B-side:
https://www.45cat.com/record/pro234

But that was a commercial release whereas the Les Paul single was a promo only. As one of the posters points out one second is shorter than a single rotation of a 45rpm 7", so the songs have to be padded out with silence. Unless the groove didn't cover the whole circumference of the record, which would probably be murder on styluses. Stylii?
