You're all idiots (well, OK - either that, or we don't share similar tastes). This Scout Niblett mini-album is stark, affecting, minimal and makes use of silence as a musical instrument in a way I've rarely heard before. Sure, her first album was too in thrall to Chan (and I didn't like it) - but on this one, Emma has developed an identity of her own, distinct and unusual. She doesn't just *sing* about Linus Van Pelt, she offers words of encouragement to him and all the Linus' within us.

All I can say is that I ducked into Tower Records on Broadway yesterday morning for some brief shelter from the bitter cold, and they were playing this album in its entirety. I found it *SOOO* distasteful (after asking whom it was that we were being subjected to) that I opted to head back out into the bone-chilling cold than hear a minute more of it.

No, I may decry a lot of music as being crap or awful or indefensible or whatnot, but at the time I first heard Scout Niblett, I honestly believed it was the worst music I'd ever experienced in my life. Can't say I heard much from her since, but I that first hearing left such a foul impression that I'm not out to give her a second chance.

Yeah, I have to ask why everyone cares. She does what she does, and she's realized her kooky ultra-primitive vision pretty fully. If you don't like it, don't listen.

Also, as hard-to-bear as it is, I wouldn't judge it after a couple listens - I gave her new album about a dozen spins before I reviewed it and I definitely got more out of it with time.

Oh! I *love* SN's voice on that song. The phrasing, the pacing, yeah, even the pitch, everything.

Molina's lyrics are wonderful, of course, but the way SN delivers lines like "Everything you love tries to get away" stops me in my tracks every single time.

i really wanna roll with the hate here b/c i met her once and she was quite the prima arsehole so i was less than inclined towards liking her music.

i hung around for the gig. this started off very sub-PJ along the lines of direct 'To Bring You My Love' rips although PJ's a musical klepto too so whatever. everything comes from somewhere.

about halfway through the gig though ,she seemed to shrug off her influences and *shock horror* knocked out a blinder. and another and another so on to the end. very very good indeed. inspiring and unique - you don't get to say that very often these days. the drumming stuff was ace too.

Back to that cover of "Uptown Top Ranking". The original Althea and Donna single is probably in the top five of my all-time favourite songs (if I weren't lazy and actually bothered to make such a list). I somehow ended up with a copy of Scout Niblett's version, and I was smacked upside the gob. In a completely different way, it's almost as good as the original. I've only ever heard one other song by her, and I quite liked it. There. That's my bland contribution.

Worst music in the world?? I could go on for weeks making lists of the worst music in the world and scout wouldnt be mentioned beyond using her music as a yardstick for what good music is.
Now Nickelback or coldplay, they are good candidates for the worst music in the world. It makes me want to stab my ears in with a pencil. And it gets heavy rotation in the world. Scout doesnt. Boo hoo you heard it once in a music store. I would count myself lucky having never seen her get any publicity worth mentioning or on a scale she deserves.

And Killing Jokes greatest moment was getting ran out of rejkavic by an angry mob. They have taste those icelandics.

As far as Nickelback and Coldplay are concerned, who invoked them either? But since you did - I'd say my problems with their respective brands of flavorless product have more to do with their ubiquitousness rather than the quality of the music. I am a close relative of Scout.
she and I know each other very well.
Scout is kind, concerned and caring.
Very supportive of her mother's piano playing.
Scout has worked with children, in hospitals, worked with the terminally ill, volunteer work in prisons..
Scout has taken in a homeless person when living alone in New York City, straight off the street.
Scout is a giving, loving creature.
Scout N. gives money to the poor on the street when most people pass by.
Even though she is not rich, this woman gives whatever she has to people.
I am not sure people appreciate her all the time.
People have stomped on her.
Crushed her and pushed her down.
Scout goes out of her way to be encouraging to many artists who think that Scout has no talent.
She is not an angry person by nature, but a peacemaker.
A pleasant, easy going woman.

Drag City has a long track record....in purposeful imperfection. Some of their releases are outright crap....in a good way. I love their artists in bits and pieces but I end up passing on 80% of their stuff.

well some of their stuff is mediocre coz it's like, some neil hagerty side project, or bill callahan's roommate, or something like that. but most of the stuff they seek out, reissue, etc. has some pretty redeeming qualities. this stuff just seemed kind of inconsequential/unmemorable to me. surely not worth the ire of this thread?

where does all that hate and negativity come from? her new album is absolutely brilliant, great tunes, a good voice, a phantastic, unique sound of her guitar play. i haven't listened to the lyrics but i doubt they are crap. so what is the problem, people? she is much better and much more interesting than cat power these days, that's for sure and i loved cat power ten years ago.

I think she exercises a bit more control over her voice now than she did early on, but it's not a huge change. Some of the I Am-era stuff was really out there; her last few have been a bit more conventional.

xp -- I had forgotten about Scout Niblett -- there was time about 10/11 years ago? When Pandora first came out ... and the novelty of "if you like this, then you will probably like this" was a big thing, and so I tried it out, and invariably, Pandora would serve up a Scout Niblett track because I like "x, y, and z" ... and I would cringe. I would hate it even more each successive time. I came to consider "Scout Niblett" shorthand for the inability of computer programs to reliably predict human taste in music.

My first introduction to her was watching Giant Sand in 2002, and Howe was talking about how he'd been captivated by a woman playing drums and singing, and had done a little dictaphone recording of her playing and turned it into a loop, which he then played while singing and playing along. I don't remember what the song, either that Howe was singing, or the song that Scout was playing that he'd sampled.

Next I heard of Scout was "Kidnapped By Neptune" and the title track in particular touches the same parts of my brain as Silver Apples, there is something breathtaking about the simplicity of the songs and the off-kilterness of the performance that it becomes its own drama, the beauty of an unsteady groove.

It is interesting to me to read Jessica Hopper write in her review of "It's Up To Emma" (2013) that "her seventh album, is her best since her debut... is her first without Steve Albini producing and is markedly fancier for it". Albini's production and Scout's songs/performance felt like a perfect union to me, it is so thrilling to have such loose drum performances sounding sonically so GOOD and his vocal mic'ing/guitar recording is so perfect at all times. There is nothing about this music that is awful to me. My favourite part of "Moon Pix" (and Cat Power's discography as a whole) is when the guitar and drums slide out of time when Chan sings "American flaaaaaag" and this is an entire discography that pays tribute to that moment.

To be clear, I like/love a lot of Scout's guitar-based stuff, but some of it doesn't appeal. Her cover of "Uptown Top Ranking" was a live staple for a while and it, well, it sucked, as far as I'm concerned, but it's one of my favourite songs to begin with and I don't think it could be covered well by anyone. Give me "Kidnapped By Neptune" and "Fuck Treasure Island" for days
