Which three albums will crack 2003 like an egg?

That is to say, which 3 albums will seemingly come from nowhere and set the world on fire, sending thousands of new fans scrambling for headphones? Preferrably, one you have not heard yet.

I'll pick LCD Soundsystem, Clientele and Lightning Bolt

david day (winslow), Thursday, 20 February 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, change the Clientele to Luomo

damn you, DJ Martian!

1. The Blood Brothers - Burn, Piano Island, Burn (Ha! Beat Yancey to it)
2. Wrens - The Meadowlands
3. The upcoming Self album on Dreamworks

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Self got a deal again? Yay for locals.

paul cox (paul cox), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, duh. I just remembered the last album came out on Dreamworks as well.

paul cox (paul cox), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Tugboat (no, really!)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Breakfast For Girls came out on Dreamworks and then I think Gizmodgery was a Spongebath-only release. Then Spongebath disappeared from the face of the earth, along with the twelve bucks I paid them for the copy of Gizmodgery that I never received, you bastards. I assumed the extended silence from Self was the result of a) Dreamworks dropping them and b) Spongebath's disappearance, culminating in c) Matt Mahaffey throwing up his hands in frustration, giving up music for good, and becoming a Gap model.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

black eyes - s/t

Brock K. (Brock K.), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That's 1, Brock.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:49 (twenty-three years ago)

curses.

i am hoping for another xtc album.

i'll go ahead and say LCD Soundsystem. i want so much from that full length.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

the lightning bolt album is so good it's given me an erection that hasn't gone away for 3 days

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

the prol-tung album, whenever they manage to actually finish it, will very quietly rip the slo-core/alt.country/whimsical chamber-pop axis asunder.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 20 February 2003 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

oooooooo........

new luomo.......

'vocalcity' was my pick for last year.... completely changed my head around on house music....

mmm... new luomo...

damn you david day!

dsp wanker, Thursday, 20 February 2003 07:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The Soft Pink Truth, first genius album of the year.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

well i guess the audio bullys album will be in all the end of year polls

is there a juan maclean album out this year?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Why on earth are LCD Soundsystem making an album? Fucking sell-outs.

I like Lightning Bolt and I am really looking forward to the Clientele - a record that can turn Tim Hopkins into a hippie has to be something special!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

dizzy rascal's is obv gonna be good, and important and stuff

zemko (bob), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, unlikely that dizzee rascal will make an album. really, uk garage full lengths have been such a recurring dissapointement that i hope he doesn't

all you american bitches: is the lightning bolt lp getting an official uk release?

schnell schnell, Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

blood brothers, 'burn piano island burn'
the gossip, new elpee
majesticons, beauty party (or new big juss, if that gets released this year)

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

what is the big deal with Luomo?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Ween - Untitled
2. OutKast - Speakerbox/Love Hater
3. Mogwai - Bag of Agony

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

sez muzik: the album is already made. plus there's 5,6 tracks around the net that just don't make dancefloor 12" material. i luv you isn't either really. so i reckon the album is in fact a stone cold certainty

majesticons is already out and is too pathetic to even elicit the cracking of joke let alone a year

zemko (bob), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, whut are these Blood Brothers all about. They recently played Boston and people were quite anxious and exicatble. The show sold out!

As for Luomo, I heard it was being released on BMG in Germany... which makes me scared for its prospect in the States.

david day (winslow), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Erlend Oye - Unrest

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't expect Ween to even crack onto the bottoms of any best-of lists anywhere (except maybe High Times), but sources say their new album is gonna be both a wild raucous adventure into new sounds and a return to their Zappa-on-nitrous-oxide goofball-genius days of yore. I know fully well it won't be gigantic, but damn if they're albums don't just keep getting better!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Yesterday I downloaded MP3s from the newest Blood Brothers, Lightning Bolt, and White Stripes records, and the Blood Brothers album is the one that I am now most tempted to buy, and I usually don't like emo and hardcore stuff.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

what does lightining bolt sound like?

also: read the interview w/ Pauk dolden in the latest wire and L'Ivresse de la vitesse is being remastered and reissued and he's got new material out and he's written a few melodies 9nothing too dense apparently). so that could do something!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

They were playing that Erland Oye CD in Fopp the other day - ghastly, first time I've had to leave a shop cos of the music playing for a long time. Will crack 2003 like a rotten egg.

Julio you might like Lightning Bolt. They're quite noisy - one drummer and a hugely amped and distorted bass.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

dizzee rascal has signed to XL recordings

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

tom- did you just download MP3s or have you got a rec (give the name of it and I'll track it down. thanks)?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I downloaded MP3s from their last album Ride The Skies, not heard their other stuff but I like that one.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

julio you should download "13 monsters", "fleeing the valley of the whirling knives", "conan", or "assassins" from the new one.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Blood Brothers -- Burn Piano Island, Burn (I was talking to their rep last week and asked her how the album was going over at radio, and she said that every DJ has actually been angry that they were being made to listen to it at first, but upon second listen, loved it. I think it'll take some patience from listeners to really dig it, but I think they will. Won't be a huge album (maybe it'll go gold by the end of the year), but they'll get on some big tours and get namechecked lots. The album is fucking breathtaking.)

The Rapture -- title unknown (It's not like they can get much bigger in the indie scene, but still a lot of people haven't heard HoJL since it's on vinyl. Not sure if it'll be on the album or not. I'm supposed to go to DFA to hear it soon and I can't wait.)

The last one's a tie for me:

Secret Machines -- title unknown (They're still hammering out a deal with a major, but once/if that gets settled, I think their record will do very well. Their Pink Floyd aping could easily sneak them onto classic rock radio (except CRR's nothing but fascists!).)

Carlsonics -- title unknown (Good, fun, playful garage rock (think Monkees) that comes off beautifully live, and just as well on record. Will be a critic fave.)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yancey plz sneak an mp3 recorded into the rapture listening thing. thanx.

anyway, what do the blood brothers sound like? this seems like the year that rock is back! for me! so i'm curious after all this tongue wagging.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a free sample Lightning Bolt MP3 from the new one available on their website. It's not bad, but I'm not convinced that it wouldn't start to wear thin over the course of an album. I have to see if I can find a few more.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I want to record it somehow. We've been setting this up for ages (for me to hang with/interview Rapture, watch them rehearse, interview James and Tim, check out the new Black Dice record, new Juan Mclean), but it's been getting bumped over and over.

Blood Brothers are from yr neck of the woods. Two vocalists: one sings, the other screams. They go at it simultaneously. The music is post-hardcore craziness. Just a barage of noise. Their older stuff was nuts, but kinda careless (download "Siamese Gun," essentially a legal drama in two minutes. Narrates a crime, arrest and trial. Really wild). The new album, though, was produced by Ross Robinson (Korn/Bizkit/AtDi/etc) and is much deeper. More shit going on. Plus they actually write melodies now. It's really, really good. Download the title track ("Burn Piano Island, Burn") or the closer ("The Shame," which is like a U2 anthem hardcore style). Those are the best cuts.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

see, i would think lightning bolt would wear thin too, but i could listen to them do "that riff" for an hour.

yancey: wow and they're on a major? hah, this continues to validate my theory that every 80s/early 90s underground rock style can be sold to a wider audience.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Lightning Bolt for me are one of those records I play maybe once or twice a year at best but I need it because only it can hit a particular spot. I have many such albums and hence less money than I should.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, they're on ArtistDirect now and getting heavy promotion. I have no idea how they'll go over -- the two frontman are basically cute, skinny drama fags. Plus there's non-white people in the band (which means they'll get AtDI comparisons, course)!!!

Here's an MP3 of my least favorite song from the album (way too tame):

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

(and me being the uber-hypah means you'll be disappointed, but it's hella good, promise!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

cheeers tom and jess.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Vitalic, has to be.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

At least Ross Robinson seems to be improving the caliber of bands he's working with. I seem to remember him being a fan of early Verve or something, which rather made me happy.

me being the uber-hypah means you'll be disappointed

Well then you suck. *beats Yancey down*

Lightning Bolt is good, Julio. I rant about them on the AMG somewhere.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

In fact the thought of Vitalic doing a whole album of stuff up to that standard is terrifiying.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i'll downloaded and let you know what i think, y.

i really wanna hear vitalic too. part of me is prepared to be underwhelmed tho.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the Tok Tok vs Soffy O album any good? I almost bought it today but I'm listening on my laptop and it's copy-protected and I didn't want the disappointment/hassle.

duane, Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

A.R.E. Weapons, Voivod, and Red Snapper (all of which I forgot in the previous thread about the best 2003 albums so far).

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

You really dig A.R.E. Weapons, Chuck??? It's Suicide + the Spa guest list!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

(I haven't heard the record yet... That's a reaction to the early singles and seeing them live (I wish I hadn't). What is it that you like about it?)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

They're punk fucking rock, Yancey. And better than Suicide EVER were. (Since I never went to Spa, I have no idea who's on said guestlist.)

(And actually, of the three records I named, they're the only one that I can actually imaginging cracking anything open. Though the other two sound good enough to DESERVE to crack something open.)

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Red Snapper broke up?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

When I saw them (and yeah, once it was at Spa) the noise aspect was fun, but the pretension was so thick you could dip into it with a newsboy cap! And I admit an indefensible aversion to all things Sevigny-related. A friend wrote that the new ARE Weapons is like "Andrew WK in good shoes," and if that's the case then I'm down, but I'm gonna approach cautiously.

Doncha think that with Jason Newsted the Voivod record will get some modern-rock airplay? MTV's been covering them like crazy (solely cause of the Metallica connection, but it's something).

I dunno who Red Snapper is. Wanna share?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

last time i heard red snapper there were the late 90s type of guys who thought they were hot shit because they bought a metalheadz record and a blue note album at the same time

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah that's who I'm thinking of. Warp guys. But somehow I don't think Chuck's talking about the same band.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

...Though I've admittedly never SEEN A.R.E. Weapons (who I know nothing about, other than they had a pretty good track on one of those generally lame Electroclash compilations last year). Though I was just thinking this morning that their album makes me WANT to see them. (All of which is to say that they may be yet more proof of why musicians shouldn't be judged by intentions, biographies, what creepy friends they keep, or what they say in interviews.) (See also: that rock critic thread, where you at least SEEMED to suggest otherwise, Yancey. Though I may well be totally misinterpreting your point...)

(I mean, maybe musicians should be judged MORALLY by intentions, bios, friends, etc. But their MUSIC should be judged by what it DOES.)

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree it's totally lame to judge them for that, but when they released that first single (late 2000, right?) there was this whole gimmick of only playing at art galleries (Spa counted somehow, I guess) and having the cut up t-shirts and trying to appear low class when they were a pair of trust-fund kids with a few decent ideas. I know that it's wrong to judge them on that, and I am more than willing to give the record a chance, but I think it's understandable why my opinion would be tainted (Especially considering that I assumed they'd be a one-decent-single footnote to a marginal scene. I was wrong, obviously.). I can't defend it, just trying to weirdly justify it by admitting my own dumb bias that I picked up from the getgo.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Better than Suicide ever were? I dunno, I have a thing for the way those keyboards just drone on...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Um...I'm actually not sure WHO Red Snapper are. I assume they're the same Red Snapper who put out an album on Matador a couple years ago, the one I always confused with Nightmares on Wax at the time because their CDs came in the mail on the same day.(Come to think of it, I guess both of them DID have something to do with Warp Records, but since I know basically nothing about Warp, that doesn't really concern me one way or the other.) I don't think I've ever heard any Metalhedz (not even sure who or what they/that are/is); don't own many Blue Note LPs, either. (I mean, Norah Jones is really cute, but, um, you know...) But anyway, the new Red Snapper CD (which seems to be called *LCD 35, unless I'm misinterpreting something) has a bunch of stuff on it that actually reminds me of early '70s Miles Davis records. Best tracks, near as I can see: "Regrettable," "Heavy Petting," "Hot Flush" "Odd Man Out," "The Tunnel." I dunno, maybe as the year goes on I'll decide I seriously overrated it. But it's for sure a lot more interesting than Black Dice or Out Hud or whoever.

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

And oh yeah, if Andrew WK is Dee Snider, ARE Weapons may well be Iggy Pop. (Maybe even Iggy STOOGE; I haven't decided yet.)

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm squaring that image in my head on the basis of lyrics (shocker!) and pondering duly. And yeah, that's the Red Snapper which has to do with Warp.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

yancey, dfa will frisk you upon entering the building.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I just did some research: the new self-titled Red Snapper album was recorded v. quickly in the studio after they broke up, and they've no plans to promo or tour behind it at all. It'll be released soonish on Lo Recordings - hence LOCD35, the catalogue number.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

And oh yeah, another thing: Weren't both Suicide and Andrew WK basically both performance artists to begin with themselves? (By the way, I've always liked Suicide's stupid shtick okay -- especially on their first two albums. But ARE Weapons definitely ROCK a lot harder, and have more going on emotionally and rhythmically and vocally, which isn't all that hard given how ridiculous Alan Vega's singing always was. At least on record. Never saw Suicide live, either, but that live release on R.O.I.R. never struck me as all that big a deal.)

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard better Elvis, but I've heard worse. As have we all, I figure. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

A good point I hadn't considered. (Vega really likes A.R.E. Weapons, by the way)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Red Snapper seems an odd choice, to say the least.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

chuck, metalheadz = goldie = drum & bass...red snapper's previous records struck me as (with late period nightmares on wax) preci(ou)s collections of the stuff they had bought the year before: stand-up bass, MC toasting, 3/4 tempo breakbeats, diva, light jazz flourishes, etc etc swerves ford focus off the side of the road into a ditch and ponders navel for a while

but who knows about this new one

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe it's their doom rock opus and it starts out with the line "Death and my cock are the world!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

So Jess, maybe I just think hack imitators of Goldie (and drum n' bass) are more fun than Goldie (and drum n' bass) himself (and itself) ever were. God knows I never cared much about either of the above. It's possible I should've listened more to Goldie and d'n'b way back then*, but maybe Red Snapper make that kinda music palatably cheesy in ways it never had the guts to be in more respectable hands -- I dunno, just guessing. Their first album seemed just fine to me. Their second one (which I believe Scott Seward put in his top ten the year it came out -- Scott, where are you?) I didn't like so much. I'm pretty sure I saw them live at Irving Plaza once, too, a couple years ago, and they were really good -- closer to Faithless (whose first two albums I LOVE) than to anybody who ever used to date Bjork, but what do I know? (Tho maybe I'm STILL confusing them with Nightmares on Wax, whose new album struck me as REALLY boring. What do you think of THEM, Jess? I'm really curious...)

Or maybe I just like how Red Snapper being named after sea food reminds me that Quarterflash used to be called Sea Food Mama -- who knows?!

(And Re: Jason Newsted. I'm just grateful that he doesn't make my beloved Voivod more tedious the way he did back when he replaced Cliff Burton in Metallica!)

* -- tho speaking of d'n'b, I do kinda like that new Bad Company album as well. Though probably not as much as *Desolation Angels.

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops. By "their first album" I meant *Making Bones; by "their second album" I meant *Our Aim is to Satisfy Red Snapper. Their new one is apparently their FIFTH; I just checked allmusic.com (which isn't always reliable, but what the hell.) I figured they only had three.

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

In spite of being this mangled conflation of all sorts of 'precious' elements, the very first Red Snapper album was actually really good. Everything after that (save the new one, which I haven't heard) has felt increasingly more like nu-jazz self-parody. Same goes for Nightmares On Wax, whose latest record was too bland to inspire anything more than feigned indifference.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

hah, chuck i think goldie* is wank too!

i haven't heard nightmares on wax in years...i think "aftermath" is amazing, but whole albums never did much for me. i might be slightly bitter because EVERY TIME i go to the local record hole, the slackwit dylan-afro'd hunchbacks behind the counter are playing stuff that sounds JUST LIKE THIS, to the point where you just want to flog them soundly around the head and neck.

(*as "goldie", not rufige kru, but i guess that's hardcore, anyway.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(Ah fuck, I just made the same mistake. I've never heard 1995's Reeled & Skinned or 1996's Prince Blimey.)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh wait, Jess already sorta GAVE his Nightmares on Wax assessment. Sorry. The CD I liked by them is called *Carboot Soul. (Is that "late period" or "early period," though? And what's the difference??)

chuck, Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

(And: I remember parts of Carboot Soul as being fantastic.)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

the slackwit dylan-afro'd hunchbacks

I have a new band name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

(also i asked them if they had a copy of the first ludacris album last night and they sniffed "maybe you should try the mall." bastards, all of them.)

uh, "early" nightmares was post-acid goth-house, which is collected on that warp 10+2 "early" or whatever comp that came out a few years ago

you know, chuck, i'm not really trying to argue with you about a record i havent heard yet.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I think you should.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no do it jess! it's fun!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i need to eat guys

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

< /spineless>

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

but i am downloading what i think is this album RIGHT NOW, so we shall see

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i need to eat guys

Why Jess, you lech.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

are you making up for dan's absence today?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

He's not absent, he's just been posting in lesser amounts. And today has indeed been hyperslow at my workplace, I admit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom -- if the Toktok vs. Soffy O you're seeing on CD isn't substantially different from the double 12-inch version, I think it's terrific and probably worth potential copy-protect issues. (Personally, I found it worth taking my computer down and setting it up on the other side of the room just so I could record the thing from vinyl to disc and listen to it in the car.) If you're actually interested in why, I reviewed it for Pitchfork, though this is not one of the reviews I'm happier with.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

(Ah fuck, I just made the same mistake. I've never heard 1995's Reeled & Skinned or 1996's Prince Blimey.)

Hey, less Snapper hating please!

Yes, Our Aim Is To Satisfy... was shit, but both Prince Blimey and Reeled & Skinned are fantastic, esp the former. Making Bones is alright but not a patch on PB. Search the wondrous "Get Some Sleep Tiger" for a tasty morsel.

Bet the new album's dull jazzwank tho.

Four-Way Anal Touchfight is everything A.R.E. Weapons could be

Four-Way Anal Touchfight

david day (winslow), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"everything A.R.E. Weapons could be" = "a band with an even dumber name?"

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder what universe is so twee that the Clientele could set it on fire.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine. :(

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

'the reverb, it BURNS meee'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Awww Nabisco is smoldering to the nostalgic charm of the Clientele; he is soo sensitive.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

(Did you get the fax you f'er?)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

you been talkin about Goldie and Red Snapper without me dammit

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

don't diss the clientele or i'll cut you

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

jess: this is yr subconscious speaking, turn me up yo; anyway i think peter shapiro said that blue note/metalheadz line in some wire somewhere

zemko (bob), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

worth repeating tho

zemko (bob), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

arrrgh, i think yr right. this is almost as bad as when i thought that "40 federal marshalls" line on ile was me.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

these are the times when i wish my memory didnt retain stupid bullshit i read in magazines and could remember a single thing i learned in high school

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

(ha ha i have just proven myself the ilm equiv of a red snapper lp)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

dunno, but one of 'ems probably Dannii Minogue - Neon Nights
Electroclash bow down to true Electrotrash!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

the new nightmares on wax is really awful and the live show was even more snoresome

minna (minna), Friday, 21 February 2003 02:11 (twenty-three years ago)

so jess whats that red snapper like?

Michael B, Friday, 21 February 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, the cutter. Clientele is darn fine, I just can't imagine them spearheading a werld revalution (sp).

Mary (Mary), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

the czars will release a splendid cd, but it will be ignored.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

but hopefully that means they'll keep playing the bug theater.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Likewise, Killing Joke will unleash THE DEATH & RESURECTION SHOW -- featuring Dave Grohl on drums -- but the pabulum-crazed globe will invariably ignore it, turning a deaf ear to the pavement-cracking, celestial whallop of the Joke in favour of Avril Lavigne's inevitable collaboration with the Neptunes (or some such).

Simillarly, Firewater will release BEFORE THE FALL, which will be hungrily snatched up and cherished by few, but largely overlooked by most.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

hey bob, i checked and guess where i subconsciously nicked that shapiro quote from? wait for it...the rough guide to drum & bass. (my mom gave me like a matched set of those things a while back cuz "you like music so much.")

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

so yancey, i'm listening to this blood brothers record and i like it a lot...its weird, tho...it's like someone formed a nu-metal boyband to cover antioch arrow or something, i can't quite get my head around the cog dissonance

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Peter Shapiro.

Cheesy drum'n'bass is the 'in thing' here (or one of them) - the Shy FX and T-Power album that Pete is always going on at me about. T-Power has certainly come along way since "Police State"!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

'Police State' was cool i thought, and 'Mutant Jazz' is still classic - in fact if anyone has the 'Prospects For Democracy' track PLEASE e-mail me cos i've been looking for an mp3 of it for years now

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder what universe is so twee that the Clientele could set it on fire.

Mine too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

so yancey, i'm listening to this blood brothers record and i like it a lot...its weird, tho...it's like someone formed a nu-metal boyband to cover antioch arrow or something, i can't quite get my head around the cog dissonance

great! glad you dig it. it's very weird... the antioch arrow is in there (i shoulda mentioned that earlier), but i don't hear it being as contrived as you seem to. maybe it's because i've heard the progression all the way through? i dunno. not sure what to think of that.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

the SSION -- Opportunity Bless My Soul

you aren't even ready

mosurock (mosurock), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

'meet me at the waterfront'is their best song i think, it sounds baroque ... i agree wholeheartedly with the antioch arrow comparisons. but is it... *gasp* e.. m.. o..? i think the nme kinda described 'em as such whilst skirting around the at the drive in comparisons. can't wait for the new disc

schnell schnell, Friday, 21 February 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

well yancey, you know me, contrived isn't a bad thing...it does sound a little willfully wacky in places (all those competing voices [even though there's only two])...still can't quite imagine this is getting radioplay, although i guess its really NOT that different from nu-metal (i'm reminded of that amen album from a few years ago, which was basically just camera-ready 90s hardcore anyway)...i suppose it must be like if you spent your adolescence listening to wax trax and then seeing NIN on mtv or whatevah...

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but seeing NIN that way was actually pretty damn cool, I seem to remember. :-) It was a sense that somebody somewhere was paying attention at last.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, yeah i didnt say it was a bad thing. also, i'm sufficiently divorced from "the scene" now that this is more a pleasant novelty than anything else

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

This is where I say that I don't know what three rekkids I'm looking forward to but that it's good to read about stuff that I can now look forward to.

Okay, and just to chime in on A.R.E. Weapons... I dunno, they REALLY should've released that album last fall when the iron was hot instead of pushed it back like four times since I just can't help but wonder if the moment has passed. I saw them play live in Chicago last year and my reaction was first, "this sucks so much it sucks" to "this sucks so much it's good." So who knows? I just don't think they can top "Street Gang." Oh wait, it's on the album. Good thinking.

Clientele are alright but that guy sings like he's got cotton in his mouth.

Of records already out, I'm looking forward to hearing that Postal Service album and the new Asian Dub Foundation. I feel like there's a ton of records I actually AM looking forward to but can't think of at the moment.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

So Chuck and I are both right about ARE Weapons. All of my peeves are still here and valid, but the record is great afterall. A slimy messy thing that's totally over the top and loads of fun.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

(and just to kill any shred of integrity i had left: the first song, "don't be scared," is ungodly good arena rock)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

shit jess shut up you'll drag us all down with you!!

zemko (bob), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

And then he'll kick the last nail in to boot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

haha no I will: wire #147!!

zemko (bob), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

and get this... it was in praise!

"they embrace everything form slam stewart stand-up bass trickery to junglist toasting without this seeming like a precis of their record collections and without the cooler than thou smugness of every other schmo who thought he was the shit for buying a blue note record at the same time he bought a mo'wax 12""

zemko (bob), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

now delete me please

zemko (bob), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The new cat power is actually pretty fantastic.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 21 February 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, everyone agrees on that one! Look out P&J 2003...

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 21 February 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "Street Gang" was hilarious, so I've got ARE Weapons filed mentally next to Pitman (I think I downloaded em on the same day) Is this wrong?

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 21 February 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never liked Cat Power and I'm hating on the new one.

What's up with the undying Microphones praise? (not on this thread, but elsewhere on the web) The record's a joke at best! (check Flakmag.com for a good piece about why it blows)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

the cat power and microphones records are big hits around the household, against my will

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know if it's in the works or not, but I'm really looking forward to a Jurgen Paape full length.

juice (juice), Saturday, 22 February 2003 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I am looking forward to the new Barbara Morgenstern album, as I have liked her last two albums. though, I'm not entirely sure if she has a new album out this year or not.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 22 February 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i hope gabriel ananda puts out an lp

zemko (bob), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Batten down those hatches, kids, the Shirokuma album is out this year and is going to blow your fucking head off. And by that I mean YOU.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 22 February 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

haven't heard the new cat power but if its as good as 'Moonpix' then great!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I gave in to A.R.E. Weapons. Yanc3y's boundless enthusiam (Such as it is) pushed me over the edge. I'm djing (for the first time! ever!)in a month or so, and I am trying to figure out which songs I want in my set. But the Blood Brothers album has really stuck out for me so far. I like "...Denver Max". I know this question has been asked a lot on ILM recently, but...is there a Dizzy Rascal album coing out, then? When?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 9 May 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

july.
