Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I do remember getting the shivers the first time I ever layed ears on "Song to the Siren" as covered by This Mortal Coil....which, I somewhat sheepishly admit, I first heard as the *INTRO TAPE* to a Robert Plant solo performance at the Nassau Colleseum in 1985.

Johnny B Good - Chuck Berry. I was about 7 and visiting some distant relative.it was electrifying. I was actually a little scared at my own reaction.

You're the one that I want- Olivia Newton John and John Travolta.
My first POP experience, it seemed so, well, musically complex.
I guess it was the bass line or something, or maybe Olivia's A-Line, who knows, its a wierd age.

So Lonely - The Police.

This is the Sea - Waterboys, seen on "the old grey whistle test", by accident. I always thought the old grey whistle test was a sheep dog trials programm. Seriously. (it was a really good music showcase Program on the BBC in the like, er, 70's) Blew me away.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 21 February 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the housey stuff I really talk about has given me goosebumps at some point but if I had to narrow things down to a few I'd have to say

Underworld-Rez/Cowgirl (Live), the bit towards the end where the higher pitched synths just crash in. Not to mention the vocal parts.

Cosmos-Take Me With You-obviously the vwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuwwhooooooooooooooosh part at each chorus (if you can call it that) which anyone who's heard it understands. You really need a good stereo though.

Bangalter and Falcon-So Much Love To Give-the greatest 4 o clock in the morning song I have ever heard.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of Van Morrison, for his singing. "Tura Lura Lura" from the Last Waltz; "Into the Mystic," "Astral Weeks," "It's All in the Game," "And it Stoned Me," and lots, lots more.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"Me And A Gun" Tori Amos. Just... uncomfortable.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

There's absurd amounts of songs that do this to me, but the thing popping first to mind in regards to goose-pimple-raising music for me is Fishbone's SNL performance years ago when they did "Everyday Sunshine" and "Sunless Saturday". I get chills just thinking about it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

PETER LLOYD, Friday, 21 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Slush", Bonzo Dog Band, and the end of "Rhinocratic Oaths", as well. "Slit My Wrists", Loud Family. Everything offa Tom Recchion's solo CD. A lot of my own stuff, ha ha. "Sweet Thing", "God Knows I'm Good", David Bowie. "Dirt", Phish. "All Her Favorite Fruit", CVB. "Shivers" from the DOGS IN SPACE soundtrack. "Clones" from the AKRON comp. "I Don't Believe in Love", Queensryche. "Caroline Says", Lou Reed. "Moon Over Marin", DKs. A lot of Game Theory stuff: "Sleeping Through Heaven", "I Turned Her Away", "You Drive", "Last Day That We're Young", others. The whole 1st SPK record, and the VHUTEMAS ARCHTYPE compilation w/the guy from Laibach (what's his name?). "I Would For You", Jane's Addiction. "I Wish I Was Your Mother", "Sea Diver" and "Saturday Gigs", Mott the Hoople, as well as "Irene Wilde" by Ian Hunter solo. This is barely brushing the surface! I get the creeps a lot, and for many reasons, and it happens more as I get older. I think it's got something to do with the past receding further and further away from me..

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 21 February 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

"Clones" from the AKRON comp
I love that record.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 21 February 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

'helen fordsdale' Mars

schnell schnell, Friday, 21 February 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

also the garbled chirps of 'go!' or 'gump!' towards the end of 'ball' by black dice, when it kicks in and goes all teenage jesus, gives me goosebumps

schnell schnell, Friday, 21 February 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

"Beside You" - Van Morrison

This part especially:
"Way across the country where the hillside mountain glide
The dynamo of your smile caressed the barefoot virgin child to wander
Past your window with a lantern lit
You held it in the doorway and you cast against the pointed island breeze
Said your time was open, go well on your merry way"

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmmm....do we mean goosebumps as in profound emotional reasonance ala shivers down one's spine...or simply "gawrsh! I like that song, I does!"

The beginning of Motherfucker=Redeemer pt2

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmmm....do we mean goosebumps as in profound emotional reasonance ala shivers down one's spine...or simply "gawrsh! I like that song, I does!"

I was going for the former, meself.

That being said, there's even one I'm a little ashamed of...the first little bit of Gorillaz "M1A1" where Damon's just saying "hello? hello?"...I have no idea why, but good God that bit gave me nightmares!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

No Woman No Cry(live)- Bob Marley
Hooker With A Penis - Tool
Trouble - Cat Stevens
Planet Of Sound - Pixies

Davlo (Davlo), Saturday, 22 February 2003 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and
Dust My Broom - Elmore James - *THAT* gives me shivers!

Davlo (Davlo), Saturday, 22 February 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The first time I heard Wesley Willis, it was a bit unsettling, esp. since he gets ridiculed so often.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 22 February 2003 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Also "Only Lover" by Jandek, when the bass drum starts pounding.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 22 February 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

definitely 'saturday' by the clientele, especially when the tambourine comes in.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 22 February 2003 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Keith! Hahaha - it's true about the tambourine...the song sort of takes off & it catches you off guard.

Jez (Jez), Saturday, 22 February 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now, Ted Leo and the Pharmacist's Ballad Of a Sin-Eater

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Astral Weeks by Van Morrison and I Believe In You by Talk Talk.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 February 2003 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

one that I had forgotten about: Pearl Jam's "Jeremy"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I know he's bit hated round these parts but two Jim O''Rourke tracks spring to mind, Bad Timing from the self-same album and the opening track on the mego powerbook release (esp. the part where the accordian loops break down into that staccato sound).

The slow motion skree and vocals coo's from Black Dice's The Dream Is Going Down off Beaches and Canyons are skin ripplers for sure. As are Neko Case's voice, The Beach Boy's Surf's Up, Wichita Lineman and the whole of Laughing Stock by Talk Talk.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

when joey sings "well nyc really has it all oh yeah oh yeah"

roger adultery, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 08:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry had to bump the thread since I am listening to this now:

Songs that give BurmaKitty goosebumps AND make her cry

REPLACEMENTS, "Skyway"

Wow! Look at that...NOT A MISSION OF BURMA SONG!

while I'm here...also:

Roger Miller is No Man: "The Promised Land"

Wow! Look at that...NOT A CLINT CONLEY SONG!

MISSION OF BURMA: "Forget" "Einsteins Day" "Dead Pool" AND "All World Cowboy Romance"

CONSONANT: "Not Like Them" "Constant" "Little Murders" AND "Dumb Joy"

ok, so it couldn't last...

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

VERY few tracks cause goosebumps on my face.
Even my favorite, legenday bands usually only manage
1 or 2 songs over their carreers that can elicit such
a response.

I had a text with all of my goosebumpers, but I lost
it. So here's just a smattering, off the top:

CCR - Born On The Bayou
The Doors - Twentieth Century Fox
Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
Pras - Ghetto Superstar
Olivia Tremor Control - Hilltop Procession
Black-Eyed Peas - Beautiful People

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Ones that spring to mind from recent listening include

Bob Dylan - Seven Curses (from Bootleg Series Vol 3)
Yo la Tengo - Tears are in your eyes
Magnetic Fields - No one will ever love you

And these have the shiver up the spine effect but also the eyes welling up effect.

mick hall (mick hall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Radiohead's "Exit Music (For Films)" still does.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The part in track 7 on Agaetis Birjun (Sigur Ros, duh) where it switches into major key and there's that big piano build-up and then the bowed-guitar comes in louder than fuck...that shit gives me goosebumps on my goosebumps.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Departures - Closer Musik

nick.K (nick.K), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Ones I can remember:
Bjork - Pluto
Cocteau Twins - Athol-Brose (I think this could have been any number of CT songs, but this was the first one I heard)

I'm sure there's more than those two though.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Tin Soldier

When PP Arnold kicks in with Marriot I come out of my fucking body

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

That reminds that "Have You Ever Seen Me" can give me goosebumps. Like on the last verse where this organ or mellotron? is present really faintly in the mix.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The big Hammonds are thrilling live. almost worth going to church for

Butthole Surfers - Creep in the Cellar - it does what it says on the tin

Merle Haggard - Okie from Muscogee (sp!) - actually this doesn't give me goosebumps, but I wanted to mention it

Tomas Koner - Permafrost
And anything that sounds like Penderecki, cept Penderecki (too obvious)

LYRICS BORN AND LATEEF THE TRUTHSPEAKER "THE LAST TRUMPET"!!!!!!!!

Oh my god this song is really fucking ridiculously awesome. I think I have goosebumps on my fucking ANKLES right now and that's not an exaggeration.l

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My fucking leg muscles are contracting involuntarily. My body is reacting to this song right now like I'm falling from a great height. Holy shit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

For a long time I've kinda not let myself become a total Latyrx fanboy because, for all their stylistic awesomeness, I've always felt a little letdown by their lyrical content for the most part, but GAWD this song is such a great example of style/substance balance. I'm really amazed by this song and a little pissed at myself for not having really listened to this album (Later That Day) until now.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

first half of Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada. at least, around the time it came out; i haven't listened to it in a while but thinking about it does the trick.

Pen Expers by Autechre (off Confield)... one of the few tracks where it really does sound like the computer is actually figuring out how to make an interesting song all by itself.

Endless Summer (the track) by Fennesz - the part where the sun finally breaks through the clouds.

There's a track on the Angels of Light album (which i can't find right now) that really worked me up goosebump-style.

The Beach at Redpoint (BOC). very mysterious.

hmm, maybe i can think of more interesting ones later

pizzadog, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ban or Astro-Ban? (Ówen P.), Friday, 19 August 2011 22:24 (fourteen years ago)

Oh and lots of Bacharach moments, off the top of my head, the mid-chorus key change on "This Guy's In Love With You", and "L.A. is a great big freeway..." etc. from "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?"
That moment in U.S. Maple's "Hey King" when Al starts singing after some 2.5 minutes of kling klang, "Hey King.... WOO!"
