miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart Cheap Trick at First Ave playing Heaven Tonight song for song in 1998. That would be in my Top 200 Concerts, at least...

I confess that hastily copied some of these titles from other lists: This album should read: A Tribe Called Quest, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. (And one of my favorite pretentious titles, too! Ugh!)

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 10 March 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Must. Write. All-time. List. Favorite. Everything....

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 10 March 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

lists .... more fuckin lists its always fucking lists with you people....I don't give a shit what your top 100 albums of all time are.
Actually I don't even understand how anyone can have a top 100 albums of all time.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It's almost as incomprehensible as clicking into a thread about lists and posting despite claiming to not give a shit.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 10 March 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i LOVE top 100s of anything and i'm proud - tho admittedly they seem a tad pointless here, why not just keep them to yourself like me? ;)

No Yes Album?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No Yes Album?

There are more good albums in the world than just 100. :-)

Anyway, I miss Rick Wakeman on "The Yes Album". But it is a good album regardless.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's really great. For me, it just towers over what else I know by them so it surprises me that you'd list 3 of their albums but not that one, esp since it seems to me to contain the loveliest melodies and tightest songs and to be the most Beatlesque. (Not that I know most of their albums or anything.) You neglect Fragile also, which is usually the canonical choice.

Crime Of the Century is an interesting choice. There are definitely classic melodies on that though it's not an album (or a band) I care for much anymore.

I'm curious about your love for A Trick Of the Tail. I bought a copy, not realizing it was post-Gabriel, and never listen to it since the first time I played it. What do you see as its strengths.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

...strengths?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

You neglect Fragile also, which is usually the canonical choice.

"Close To The Edge" is the Yes album most often featured in "best of all time" lists.

As for post-Gabriel Genesis, most Genesis fans will agree that the first two post-Gabriel albums are just as strong as their Gabriel-output. It wasn't until Hackett left and Phil Collins started contributing more to the songwriting that they changed their style in a more pop oriented direction.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I need a few days to think about this.

I tried doing this, and it depressed me. It might be interesting to make a list without any rock music on it, though.

See, this is where I get to prioritize my REAL blind spots: Not just the canonical shit that I don't understand, but your guys' Top 20 shit that I've never HEARD...

Plus I'm forced wonder why I put some okay popular jazz record like Don Shirley on my list instead of Flipper or Buhloone Mind State, maybe because it's shorthand for a genre I love...

Also, Daver: POEM ROCKET?????

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Jordan made me go see Poem Rocket with him once.

JH: "You have to see this band Poem Rocket. They're the best!!!"
JBR: "Uh, ok."

(later)

JH: "Pretty great, huh?"
JBR: "This is fucking horrible!!"
JH: "Hahahaha oh it's totally horrible."
JBR: "So it's not just me."
JH: "But that's what I love about them. They're so average and mediocre!"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was listening to poem rocket once, and I swear they made me feel sea sick.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

what, pray god, do Poem Rocket sound like besides seasick?

Even if you haven't heard them, you've heard them. Droney, unambitious, serious, self-important, sexless '90s indie.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't believe it! Jess in "no The Streets / no This Heat" shockah!

luke (luke), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Poem Rocket's deconstruction of Pretty Baby. And the one that goes "so far from God, we've heard nothing about this yet, from him". They are sorta across between built to spill's longer songs, six finger satellite without any absurdity and Chavez. With quasi religious/'deep' lyrics.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Jordan, on the bass player: "Gawd, you know she's just really bad in bed."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The first song on the last Poem Rocket record was really amazing. The rest sucks. (I first bought the album after getting them confused with Pave the Rocket, who a friend had been raving about)

I'm gonna post a list later (my first real list to ILM!), but it might just be the 100 best albums currently on my iPod.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Poem Rocket? Who are they, anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

100 A.R.E. Weapons -- "Don't Be Scared," the song

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

They Will Know We Are Christians?

Well, my dad recorded it when he was a priest on Chicago's South Side in the 1960s. The songs are really GREAT, and the liberation/integration struggle milieu just makes them more interesting in retrospect. I've grown up with the record but never gotten tired of it. The sound struck me as dated when I was kid, but it ages really well. Maybe it could use a main voice, like most folk gospel music, but I've actually been talking to my dad about whether he should push to have it reissued. He was trying something fairly new at the time, and "They'll Know We Are Christians" is pretty much a standard/classic among born-again types who've never heard of the guy who actually wrote it. 'Course, I now feel like I should have thrown in Ray Charles, Pete Seeger, and the Anthology of American Folk Music...

Oh - and to the electric sound of jim: I haven't actually heard _Bird-Dog_ yet! & _Way Out Where_ was my 1st Verlaines album, so it's the one I'm most comfortable w/. Cuddly wuddly. I imagine that I'd feel that way about any Verlaines album if it were my first, tho _WOW_'s overt bombast was probably the best thing for my guitar-centric self @ the time.

BTW, "Tremble" (from _Ready to Fly_) is my favorite Verlaines song. Right now, that is.

Have I mentioned how super these lists are, & that I'm totally jealous of each one, & that I'm anxiously awaiting Jody's? All righty, then.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Bird-Dog is essential! get thee to a record dispensing establishment! (seriously, you won't be disappointed if Mr Downes floats thee boat)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

...strange to say it, since I did my own nutty list a while back for the nineties, this whole exercise is just alien to me. Couldn't do it, not now at least.

Not to sound like a mom, but I love all of your lists the same--maybe with some special affection for that one organized by drug type...

Mental note: Bump this thread in a year (I've already revised my list). Nate, so I guess I should go buy that Majesticons, eh?

Here's my (tentative) list. No best-ofs and only one appearance per artist. Note that the lower-charting entries aren't necessarily "not as good" but in many cases haven't been in my possession long enough to really sink in and endear themselves to me. And I KNOW I've forgotten something. I just don't know what.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

As for the whole "Beck? Why the holy fuck, man?" issue: sonic inventiveness, lyrical intricacy, that that that voice, and most importantly how it felt to me as I stumbled out of high school into a vista of department store cashier jobs and collegiate isolation. Listen to "Blackhole" sometime -- I swear it's one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I just realized I omitted 58-61.

58) Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Blank Generation
59) Fatboy Slim, Better Living Through Chemistry
60) Tom Waits, Rain Dogs
61) The Damned, Damned Damned Damned

I suppose I should give an honorable mention to "Singles Going Steady", even though it sort of falls under the definition of a "comp".

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

SHIT. Lifter Puller's "Half Dead and Dynamite" should be about 15 or so, then bump everything down a notch. No more Beauty Party. :( But replace Alex Gopher with Mike Ladd's "Welcome to the Afterfuture" and it should be better realized.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I kinda wish I put Richard Hell on my list, even though I only like half of it (said half of which I like a lot, mind you), and I like Eat to the Beat as your (Nate's) Blondie choice. Not sure I totally agree with it--I'd still probably go with the more obvious crowd (i.e., me in my room) pleaser, Parallel Lines--but if there were more good songs on Eat to the Beat to match the giant leap in sound they took at that point, I'd be all over it.

I made a mistake on mine. I called #100 The Sound of House when in fact it's called The House Sound of Chicago (I did it from work, so sue me). It's a perfect single-disc compilation with "Jack Your Body," "Move Your Body," and other songs about doing things with or to your body.

I also think John Coltrane being in there is a slight lie: I love the album, but I'm not exactly obsessive about it, and I can now say ashamedly that I probably put it in out of (slight) jazz-less guilt (I should be too old for such worries, no?). I'd now replace it instead with The Anthology of American Folk, which I'll take over just about any jazz record, I'm pretty certain. Though that obviously wouldn't fit in under the heading "acid," and would perhaps make more sense in a category of its own: "moonshine"?

s woods, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, "Dreaming" is one of Blondie's best pop songs and the rest of the record is decent at worst, but basically it all boils down to the undeniable power of "Atomic".

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i keep remembering all these things i left off - funkadelic, steely dan, mostly rock stuff - and cringing

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone else noticed the preponderance of "pink" (not incl. Pink) on these lists?!

Pinkerton, Weezer
Pink Flag, Wire (x 3)
Music From Big Pink, the Band
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Flaming Lips
Pink Floyd, Dark Side x 2, Piper at the Gates of Dawn

s woods, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Mind you, blue still beats it hands down (I can't be bothered to list 'em all).

s woods, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, this is pretty much definitive and descending in order to how much i love stuff; i kinda cheated big time by listing multiple albums to boost a position or grouping albums by different acts i was compared to each other. and i'll never know why i did this.....

enjoy....

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

just wanted to announce that I hereby disavow and disown my own list. I forgot some crucial records, and left off some others due to an incorrect transcription from my notebook where I was obsessively working on my list at 2:30 in the morning, and made some other injudicious choices.

it occurs to me that my "second 100"--the stuff I love but left off--would probably be really interesting to compile

it also occurs to me that life's too short. but I do want to formally apologize to Talk Talk, Super Furry Animals, Cee-Lo, and Cannibal Ox for leaving them off, and to the Boo Radleys for only including one album, and to Martin Carr for not putting on any Brave Captain, etc. etc. etc. ho hum

and to the Boo Radleys for only including one album, and to Martin Carr for not putting on any Brave Captain, etc. etc. etc. ho hum

I love hearing that, the Boo Radleys would actually make three albums in my top 100 but I'm insane, major respect for your choice being C'mon Kids, yes that is one of them. bravecaptain would not make my list, looking forward to hearing Martin's (bravecaptain) brand new album for 2006. Also loved that last poster including Moose on his list, such an underrated band, but would have a different album on my list but love that album as well.

I made a top 100 about three years ago but is so outdated that I can no way cut and paste that same list. I'm just about ready to finalize my 2005 list so I'm not about to go there.

Where the hell is ILM's 1980’s album and singles list?

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 9 January 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

I long for for Sice to come up with something again. The Eggman album is underrated, and actually the only Boo Radleys album I consider better that Eggman's is "Wake Up!"

List of Tokenist Music (Mostly From The 1970s) for White Middle-Aged American Males

ok, because it's in The Rules, no compilations, no live albums, no archival releases, no 7" or 12" singles, no EPs, no classical, all of which restrictions serve to make this list significantly more tokenist (eliminating, for instance, some of the best work of Patrick Cowley and Arthur Russell, Slayer's "Haunting the Chapel", the best '50s rock, almost all chart pop, all music ever from before the 1950s). Further rules: One album per named artist, no insulting the reader by naming Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles (if you're a middle-aged white American male and haven't heard their catalog you're not the target audience of this list), and NO RECORDS BY THE FUCKING FALL.

I sort-of thought about doing this a while ago, but ended up with a long list of albums I could not be bothered if I ever heard them again.

Funny, that.

Mark G, Monday, 11 January 2016 11:53 (nine years ago)

i'd be willing to never hear any particular album or song or piece of music again, because music is experiential for me. but i don't let go of my experiences, and i try to honor my influences. derbe respect, alder.
