Minna - no I'm not. Though, there's a lot of Croatian diaspora in Australia (know any?), mostly descendents of embittered old right-wingers who fled after WWII. I've met some of them over the summers of my life, and have in my teenage years, embarassingly, actually used "do you like Frente!" as a chat-up line a few times with Cro-aussie gals (no prizes for guessing the outcome).

Also, once, I went to the cinema in Zadar to watch Muriel's Wedding, and while it was predictably pretty much empty, I happened to be seated near three girls - one of whom was from Zadar, and the other two were her friends from Australia. They talked a lot during the film, and squeaked with delight when someone on the screen dropped a reference to Baby Animals! This was the perfect opportunity to jump in with my tried and tested Frente!-tactic, but alas, I couldn't muster the courage.

I'm a huge Avalanches fan too. And have never had no Frente! albums, to make the above story more (or maybe less?) sad-ass. As for New Buffalo - well, frankly, they're not getting heard that much over here, I feel like I'm the only person here to have heard it...well, me and a few friends whom i hawked with mp3s of "About Last Night" and "This Is More" - but no-one among them seems to even remotely share my enthusiasm :( Still, oh how I love that EP. Last time I heard of the Buffalo lass, she was apparently going to LA or someplace like that to record her full length debut. Know perhaps what's up with that?

Speaking of Australian stuff - my girlfriend's flatmate got the last Gerling album recently... is it worth bothering with? I heard "Children Of Telephatic Experiences" few years ago and thought it was godawful (so much that I gave it away to a friend), and I guess "Head2Cleaner" is supposed to be something completeley different, more club friendly right? But "Dust Me Selecta" didn't do much for me, hardly raising above okayish in my experience (though, admittedly, I've only heard it once or twice).

why did mojo state as one of their criteria that every one of these 100 singles should be readily available on cd, and then put at number eight "96 tears," the original of which is currently not available anywhere on cd?

(and why not? because allen fucking klein owns the rights to cameo parkway records and won't fucking re-release any of them, which presumably explains why "night owl" by bobby paris never appears on any northern soul compilations)

OK OK OK, my previous list was pretty lame and "safe" and included songs that weren't technically singles. This is revision 2 or 3 of what I'm sure will in ten years be about 500, during which "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is knocked off #1 by a white-label of El-P and Ludacris freestyling over the Neptunes' instrumental remix of the Rolling Stones' "Undercover of the Night". But I feel a bit better about this one, even if it's still horrendously lacking in jungle, reggae, ska, IDM, '60s soul, indie rock, player rap, top 40 pop and shit you haven't seen pimped a billion times in MOJO/SPIN/CMJ. There's other lists here, y'know.

Common really does have a track called "The Light"--his biggest U.S. hit by some margin, I believe.

I guess that's a way of looking at it, but I more see the b-side when making lists like this as just an optional comploment to the a-side--if b-sides counted just as heavily, then we'd have to rank singles with strong a-sides but weak b-sides (superfluous remixes or live tracks especially) lower as a result. I don't think that's fair. I consider a top b-sides list to be mostly independent of a top singles list.

Have just tidied my singles box and found a few neglected classics. Anyone remember New Order's second single Procession? Sandwiched between the mighty Ceremony and Blue Monday it tends to get forgotten, but it's a little gem. Starting with a 'sick' keyboard sound, it's a happy pop tune totally out of kilter with 1981 or whenever (but in keeping with later NO). steve morris does some killer snare rolls near the end.
