i know a woman who lost the best years of her life to a husband who eventually revealed that he was gay, and then took up with a man thirty years younger. he had been cold and relentlessly critical to her throughout their marriage, leaving her feeling totally worthless by the end of it. this would be bad enough, but as the icing on the cake, he molested their son.

when did i ever say that i thought that gay men were likely to abuse children? he didn't molest his son because he was gay, he molested his son because he lived in a world in which his sexuality was condemned, and instead of confronting that or getting past it like 99 percent of gay men in the fifties would've done, he chose to victimize someone defenceless. i believe it's true of almost anyone that if you put them in a situation where their basic sexual desires are treated as deviant and awful, they're more likely to express those desires in negative ways. so if anything, the problem is homophobia, which helped to make a paedophile out of a man who wouldn't otherwise have been one, and wouldn't have been one if he had been born twenty years later.

as for my friend, she can certainly think for herself, but she was the victim of systematic emotional abuse. she should've gotten out earlier, yes, but let's not play 'blame the victim' here, either. it is to protect her privacy, by the way, that i'm posting anonymously, and no, i'm not calum.
