I'm thinking Geri Halliwell here but anyone got any others?

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Your mama!

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well... duh. Does any grown adult have a sexy mum?

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

are you a 'grown adult' calum?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yes I am Julio, how COULD you think otherwise?

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

shouldn't the capital letters be used in the word 'you' on yr post calum?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum's right Julio. Do it in a matronly voice and you'll get it.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Young or old, he's still a TWUNT.

kate, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

here here Kate.
Oh, but he's only err... joking.
Ho ho ho.

Next up in Calum's Totally Unnecessary and Desperately Unfunny Sexist Tripe Posts:
"That Dollar bird may look rough now, but I'd have been like a rat up a pipe 20 years back"
"If Madonna Can Do that with her legs, is it any wonder Guy Ritchie's Film Career's gone off the Boil?"
"Sonia - She May Be Ginger, But she's a Top Smiley Bird with nice wangers, Innit?"
"Does anyone know the address of the T.A.T.U Fanclub?"

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but TATU doesn't need Calum...they have each other...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ahh.... but the average Loaded reader (and Calum - are they one the same?) would think TATU were only (supposedly) lesbian because they hadn't met them yet.

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

calum -> tatu

as

james bond -> pussy galore

x0x0x, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah russ, such a gent. In reality probably an inbred tosspot that gets his jollies from smelling his own wind and having sex with his leather sofa.

A complete jobby, in other words. Tho it's obvious he just wrote what he did to try and get some ILM ladies to think he's such a cooool fellow and not at all into talking about what femme he'd want to cop off with. Oh no....

And if you believe that you'll believe Kate shaves her arm pits on a regular basis...

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. Been a while since your last wank, has it, Calum? Don't you know that's what's causing your acne?

kate, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have any acne Kate and actually was very lucky as I've never had any spot problems. I'm perfectly confident in this area so go ahead and slag all you want. It's not going to damage me, but if it helps you make up for your own insecurities then that's fine.

At work darling, so got to dash now...

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And I've never read Loaded in my life. If I want to see porn I'll watch the 10 minute freeview of TVX thanx.

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum,

you absolute jerk..... far from writing what I did to, I hate to do it but I have to quote you, "try and get some ILM ladies to think he's such a cooool fellow and not at all into talking about what femme he'd want to cop off with."...... err... you absolute monumental wanker.

I'm fucking gay you philistine.

Doh!

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if you're gay then how on all of fuck can you dare to comment on whether or not Emma Bunton has chubby bum cheeks or Jo Guest/ Pam Anderson are ugly (which I assure you they are not). The equivalent of me trying to argue the sexual appeal of David Beckham surely? The monumental prick, therefore, is you.

And this discussion was about Geri Halliwell anyway.

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

dnftt

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

standard issue homophobia from calum

cf every other thread he's started

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a "fascist" btw for pointing this out

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

also gay

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

this is where he starts whining that his great hero is nelson mandela and he's a "liberal kind of chap"

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What is a minger? Or did he just mispell miner? Is that what all the Hot Miner e-mail is about? Pictures of women covered in coaldust? I know it takes all kinds, but that's just depressing.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum its a well known fact that gay men have better taste in women than straight men, thus Russ is prefectly entitled to his catty remarks re Bunton, Pamela etc.

does wanking really cause acne? i thought it was not doing it more often that had caused it (all that stored up excess testosterone etc.) - bleurgh

and HA HA fivvy!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What was said about Bunton anyway? I trust much light was made of her cro-magnon forehead

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum -
how to mortify yourself in front of rather a large audience..... and for the record, in my early days, I was engaged for 6years, so I think I have as much right as yourself to comment on the highs or lows of femininity. Have YOU ever had a girlfriend?

You retard. (apologies to retards everywhere).

ps..... mark s - well said - because you KNOW he'd have said "oh I don't mind gays, I knew one once, as long as they don't try it on with me.... "blah blah blah. When someone says this to me, I'd much rather they be honest and admit to being homophobic assholes. But, reading his post, he doesn't even have to admit it, really, does he?

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Whhaaattt? Calum is not gay? I thought he was after I had to read about his sexual fantasties with Phil Collins.

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Q. What would happen if Calum actually met and spent time with Louise Wener?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely Louise W would be so impressed with calum's "classy wit" that she wd get thee hots for him, and he wd have to make the difficult choice between her & his "very sexy girlfriend". Or possibly she wd take out a restraining order, I dunno (shrugs)

Pashmina, PC nazi (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I find Geri Halliwell attractive.

Doesn't everyone?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

not especially

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I do find her attractive, I must confess.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one is Geri Halliwell?
Is that Baby, Ginger or Sporty?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ginger

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

< SEXIST PIG MODE >
Ick.
The only ones I would bang would be Scary and Posh. Preferably at the same time.< /SEXIST PIG MODE >

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yawn. This was my point about psuedo-liberalism. What did I say that was homophobic exactly? Did I say 'fuck you fag boy'? Erm... no. I stated that a gay person is probably not the best voice for passing comment on a woman's attractiveness. I also stated that as a straight guy I'm not the best person to pass comment on a man's sexual attractiveness. Hmm, so THAT makes me a major league homophobe?

I have always, and will always, defend gay rights. And I have gay friends so FUCK YOU PRICK. Christ, your such a knob. And, for the record, I feel that by using 'retard' you ARE utilising a loaded word and in doing so dis-respecting those with serious mental disabilities. Aaaaah, psuedo-PC is fucking GREAT isn't it?

"I was engaged for 6years, so I think I have as much right as yourself to comment on the highs or lows of femininity. Have YOU ever had a girlfriend?"

Yes, and I actually find it deeply offensive that you would be engaged to this poor girl for six years (that's SIX YEARS of her life mate) while lying to yourself and others about your sexuality. I'd have personally slapped you for that.

"But, reading his post, he doesn't even have to admit it, really, does he?"

No, because I'm not homophobic and haven't said anything to indicate this. AT ALL. I will never, and have never, discriminated against anyone because of trivial horseshit like their sexual persuasion or their religious creed and in doing so I'm far more tolerant than assholes like you ever will be.

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, and I actually find it deeply offensive that you would be engaged to this poor girl for six years (that's SIX YEARS of her life mate) while lying to yourself and others about your sexuality. I'd have personally slapped you for that.

Calum in a nutshell...
"pulp roxor!!! u r all gay!!!"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Scary is thee best, yes BTW Custos. Posh I'm not too keen on. I thought the Spice girls were awesome.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, uh Pashima...do you find it deeply offensive that he would be engaged to this poor girl for six years while lying about his sexuality?
And if so, do you personally think he should be slapped?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Did I kill someone? No! No! I only punched them in the face! So how can you call me violent? Are you looking for a slap?"

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahahahahahahaha. Ouch.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I do not find it offensive that he shd be married to anyone for any amount of years. I do not believe in this concept of "Lying abt sexuality". I don't think people should be slapped, generally.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(NB Custos, multi-quote ws excerpted from CR's post, above)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm standing by my view on this. My heart goes out to this girl. I helped a chap 'come out' when I was 18, a very good old mate of mine, and the first thing I told him was to stop pretending to his friends etc etc because your real mates will accept you for what you are. I cannot believe that this fellow hid behind a charade, dragging this poor girl with him, for six years. Surely someone must have said: 'This is wrong'.

I can only imagine how I'd feel if I was engaged to someone who later said to me: 'Sorry about the past 6 years but my real persuasion is girls'. I'd never get over that. I can only speak from my own heart on this one and if it makes me in the eyes of the oh so fucking pathetically PC ILM community some kind of homophobe (HOW?) then fuck everyone.

And Pashmina's debates have been so pathetic (esp her one on porn) that I strongly believe ILM is her social life and she never gets out.

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

NB Custos, multi-quote ws excerpted from CR's post, above
YEah, I know...but when you isolate it from its context, its suddenly strangely comical. Which is bad, because I was eating ramen noodles when I read it, and choked.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

But I'm okay now.

ohhhh, when we realize it was calum all along.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i suspect Russ may have exploded and thats why he hasnt bothered to tell Calum thats its perfectly acceptable to be engaged to a girl for 6 years in the past, regardless of if you happen to be gay NOW or not. Russ never said he was gay at the time of his engagement, perhaps he wasnt, or he was 'one of those who swing both ways, you know, AC/DCs' - the point is you dont know anything about it Calum so probably not a good idea to make assumptions (nor was it for Russ to suggest you've never had a girlfriend granted)

really you two need to have a Scalectrix battle to sort this out once and for all

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Pfft Stevem we're all on the hip-hop thread now, you're so out of touch.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i said on some thread somewhere that i thought calum was ok. i now realise i hadn't read enough of his posts/(and i was drunk).

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha: I just strolled down the memory lane of Calum's first forays into ILM and he was never okay. Though to his credit he seems to have learned to read a little bit since then.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Michael Wells. I defended him in the great porn debates, but now I see him as an attention getter...the Boy Who Cried PC? Study the works of Lenny Bruce, Calum, and come back in a few years when you've learned a bit more about comedy...for instance, style, timing, and above all, *purpose*.

Paula G., Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"its perfectly acceptable to be engaged to a girl for 6 years in the past, regardless of if you happen to be gay NOW or not."

i know a woman who lost the best years of her life to a husband who eventually revealed that he was gay, and then took up with a man thirty years younger. he had been cold and relentlessly critical to her throughout their marriage, leaving her feeling totally worthless by the end of it. this would be bad enough, but as the icing on the cake, he molested their son.

calum is throwing seriously wild punches here, and i really doubt russ t did anything like what my friend's husband did to her to his girlfriend. but it needs to be said that things like this really happen, and that it can be a terrible, terrible thing to have years of your life taken away by someone you never could've pleased anyway. "guess what, i'm gay!" isn't always a punchline. sometimes it breaks a person's heart, and all because they didn't have the courage to be truthful about who they were.

gina lollabrigida, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks at thread *sigh*

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

gina is even more homophobic than Calum. For the record, statistics have gay men slightly LESS likely to abuse children than straight men.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Nixon gay??????

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

gina, oh boo hoo poor woman who cant think for herself.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"gina is even more homophobic than Calum"

I assumed gina and Calum were one in the same. An amusing thought at any rate, that he can only let out the really hard core anti-gay sentiments when in drag.

Paula G., Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Guys! I tend to judge every person on individual characteristics. Otherwise, good or bad, you are stereotyping. 'All Gay Men Have Good Taste In Women' or 'gay men slightly LESS likely to abuse children than straight men'.

It's always better to take into facet all characteristics, all view point, all disgressions before leaping into any judgement call on character, regarding homophobia.

I know two people with whom I work with. Both are jerks. One is gay. Should I assume and take to the defence of the gay man because, simply, he is gay? No!

So let's lay off people and hear stories and judge each story on it's own merits.

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Now if I said 'Worker X is an asshole because he is gay' and Work Y is less an asshole because he's not gay', then my statement is bad. But some of the defences are worse than the offences occurring here.

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Now if I said 'Worker X is an asshole because he is gay' and Work Y is less an asshole because he's not gay', then my statement is bad. But some of the defences are worse than the offences occurring here.
I've been in that very same situation. I had this really irritating cow-worker who grated on my nerves until I grew to actively loathe him.
Later on, he comes out of the closet.
Later still I make a comment about how much he annoyed me, and got static about it: "What...you hate Brad 'cuz he's gay?"
"No. I hate Brad 'buz he's Brad. I found out he was a feckless asshole loooong before I knew his tastes in lovelife."
Moral of the story: Apparently he took my advice to "Get Fucked!", and actually DID get fucked.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't see what any of this homophobia stuff has to do with The Spice Girls, though...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Pointing out statistical facts is not stereotyping. You're an idiot.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't going to comment on this, and just leave well enough alone but with humour out the way and realsing my big gob has started a big debate here let me just add:

*I don't post as anyone other than Calum here - I'm sure a moderator will be able to do an ISP check. I use two - one is my work's, one is my house's.

*To be fair, I probably jumped the gun. I don't know what sort of relationship this was - it could have been that the fellow went both ways, or whatever. But then the only information I got was something along the lines of: 'I have every right to judge the attractiveness of certain women because I was engaged to one for six years'. Fair dos, but if this fellow knew he was gay and living a lie, my initial point stands that I feel this was a rotten thing to do.

*I'm not homophobic, and to be accussed as such by pseudo-liberals such as those on this board is deeply pathetic and hurtful. I think the world will only get along when we learn to tolerate everyone and stop distinguishing between people through religious creed or sexuality. I seem to have been attacked here because I said I didn't see how this fellow was an authority on female sexual attractiveness. I backed this up by saying I couldn't debate over who I'd most like to shag - Brad Pitt or David Beckham. But in the minds of some people here this is bafflingly homophobic.

At this point I'm leaving the thread well alone. I've had my say and thought that this fairly dumb thread about Geri Halliwell might have resulted in some amusing 'Calum you're a sexist cunt' comments from Pashmina - but instead it's not, and I guess I'm to blame.

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin you just stated it was a statistic without any factual back-up. If I told you the world was flat would you automatically believe me. I need reference points for statistics or otherwise my friend you are the idiot! : - D

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Minger == plural of minx?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Note: I am in no way stating that Calum is not an idiot. A well referenced argument is just more convincing and more constructive in breaking down the rhetoric.

Searching calum's ip addrss from that last post shows only messages by calum. Searching "gina L's" IP address shows only that one message, make of that what u will.

Root Admin Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Regardless of whether or not Callums may or may not be homophobic or whatever, the original subject of the thread is sexist, size-ist and just general evidence of poor taste and a lack of sensitivity. End of story.

kate (suzy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Kate's response has reasonably locked this thread better than any moderator!

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But just to add my names Calum with on L and not with two.

Ta (and the thread wasn't size-ist coz I stated she was horrid regardless of her weight. And most of my insults have actually been geared towards the male sex - c.f. the Phil Collins thread. So I'm not sexist. I'm just obnoxious. Thank you and good night!).

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I backed this up by saying I couldn't debate over who I'd most like to shag - Brad Pitt or David Beckham.

Of course you could. It's not as if heterosexual men are incapable of seeing a man and judging him shagworthy. It's just that they're not particularly interested in actually doing it. (Same goes for any other permutation of sex and sexuality.)

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

As I said to the moderators in an email earlier - we have 2 Cal(l)ums on ILX - one is Calum as of this thread and the other is Callum who hasn't posted in a little while. They both like the same music but are not the same poster I believe.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I really couldn't tell you which one I'd rather shag. Honest...

And mark p, I was taking the piss (jeez some folk here are sooo slow) which, erm, makes you the dumb one for rising to it.

Also, only one Calum. Both the same. Both funny. And unfunny. Depending on your sense of humour naturally.

Calum, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, I think there's two version of THIS Calum as well. He was so...civilized last week, and now he's worse than his 'Sleeper vs the Strokes' days.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"gina is even more homophobic than Calum. For the record, statistics have gay men slightly LESS likely to abuse children than straight men."

when did i ever say that i thought that gay men were likely to abuse children? he didn't molest his son because he was gay, he molested his son because he lived in a world in which his sexuality was condemned, and instead of confronting that or getting past it like 99 percent of gay men in the fifties would've done, he chose to victimize someone defenceless. i believe it's true of almost anyone that if you put them in a situation where their basic sexual desires are treated as deviant and awful, they're more likely to express those desires in negative ways. so if anything, the problem is homophobia, which helped to make a paedophile out of a man who wouldn't otherwise have been one, and wouldn't have been one if he had been born twenty years later.

as for my friend, she can certainly think for herself, but she was the victim of systematic emotional abuse. she should've gotten out earlier, yes, but let's not play 'blame the victim' here, either. it is to protect her privacy, by the way, that i'm posting anonymously, and no, i'm not calum.

Ahh.. there are times when a fucked PC at home is a blessing.....

Calum, my poor misguided rat in a corner - whilst the notion of you err... 'slapping' me has made me smile like nothing else this morning (I'd obviously have to stamp on your head first), I feel I have to clear up this little confusion you seem to have about sex and sexuality.

Chris Piuma - well said. A man who cannot accept beauty in other men is plain stupid. A man who fails to see beauty in anything - is stupid. But that's obvious, isn't it?

My ex fiance.... we met in a gay club. She was bisexual, I was bisexual (at the time). There were no secrets, no other dalliances, no false promises, no other people involved. For six years we lived, ate, worked, slept, fucked together. We split when she wanted to leave the country and I didn't. We are still the best of mates, and always will be, even though she now lives in Holland.

I do find it most incredible that anyone could find Calum a guiding voice in coming out, though...... it'd be like asking Jack Duckworth to wax lyrical on Proust.....

HETERO-PHOBE! HETERO-PHOBE!!!!

Now answer me this psuedo-liberal bastions of all things PC on ILM. If I said to a gay postee 'A man who cannot accept beauty in other women is plain stupid' would I be called a homophobe or wot??? I think I would. Do your double standards stand up I wonder???

And for the record, I see no beauty in the male body at all.

Calum, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Those pesky mirrors!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Tom, you so funny. Funny funny.

Calum, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(more) serious response - what about things that don't vary that much between genders - eyes and ears say? Are they irrelevant to beauty?

Also presumably when you are looking at yourself you are capable of making aesthetic choices i.e. I would look better if I lost the beer gut/built my arms up a bit/cut my hair that way not this? So you must have some standard of male attractiveness built-in.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't agree with the "stupid" comment btw - I think it'd be possible to not have *any* conception of human attractiveness, it would be a bit like being tone deaf, which doesn't make you thick.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just listening to "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and I realised its a great song. Thanks.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Speak for yourself, I have no beer belly and did a health check today and glad to see I'm super fighting fit (naturally).

But my point is, if I said to a gay person 'A man who cannot accept beauty in other women is plain stupid' would I be a homophobe? I can think of a few gay people that I know would be very unhappy at such a statement.

But aaaaah the joys of politcal correctness and the double edged sword it brings with it.

Calum, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum, after you make your point you REALLY don't need to repeat it ad nauseum.

(Actually, that goes towards most of the people in this thread, including myself. Why do I read things that make me so irritated?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody saying "it is not possible for women to be beautiful" would be stupid regardless of orientation.

Somebody saying "I cannot judge whether women are beautiful or not" would not be stupid though I think they'd be disingenuous, especially if they were a woman.

"A man who cannot accept beauty in women is plain stupid" could be referring to either of these.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry is hot

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The sentence "A man who cannot accept beauty in men is plain stupid" makes the sophistic assumption that everyone deep down thinks men are beautiful.

Blueski: *blush* (or in my case *bluesh*)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum, in order to say a thing possesses beauty, *must* one want to have sex with that thing?

In that case, I want to fuck the Maysles Brothers "Horovitz Plays Motzart" and parts of "Gimme Shelter".

Paula G., Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it is making the assumption that it is possible for a man to be beautiful.

Which is an assumption, sure. But underlying Calum's position are even bigger assumptions, like 'Beauty is meaningless except in a context of sexual attraction'.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I do not think that is a bigger assumption, particularly in the context of a thread about people with whom you would never want to have sex with regardless of specified physical characteristics.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You could say that about this whole godforsaken thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

'Having sex with somebody pretty sure beats the hell out of having sex with somebody ugly'

Aren't they usually pretty when you start and ugly after you're done?

dave q, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I know that I'm pretty when I start . . .

J (Jay), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know. I can 'understand' why some men are considered attractive, even if am unaffected by this attractiveness.
But I also think that certain words can never really apply to certain genders.
Men can be: handsome, dashing or good-looking or cute. But can't be "pretty" without covering up or destroying at least half of their masculine cues.
Women can be: pretty, cute, adorable and ravishing; but can only be handsome after reaching their 40s. (Note that in this context "handsome" doesn't exactly stop at the skin. A handsome guy is only handsome on the surface. A handsome woman is handsome all the way to the bone.)

Oh, also, Side note: Just remember... "I want a body like Arnold Schwartzenegger" and "I want Arnold Schwartzenegger's body" mean two incompatable and radically different things.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

none of the above. we are conservative instead.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah come on - I give ya a few interesting, weird shit threads to chuckle and be entertained by.

Incidently, I find Geri Halliwell the dumbest, most annoying, pathetic, desperate and most downright feacking hideous celeb ever. I hate her with a passion and I wouldn't touch her with yours.

Calum, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Finally back on topic!

I didn't like Geri's anorexia look. She was nice before. Apart from the looks, she doesn't have anything. But in the end she was the least annoying of all the Spice Girls! Victoria is just simply the dumbest woman in the UK, Emma tried to shake off her Baby image by showing off just how horny she is (there's that bit in one of the girls' last videos wherein they look at holographic men, you should see the looks on Emma's face!), Mel B got into horrendous R&B, and Mel C kept her voice.

Still, Spice World was a very funny movie. I liked it a lot. Really. No, really!

Tijn, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The only one I'd bang would be Emma Bunton in that green dress she wore on Celebrity Streetmate.

I'm not sure Geri's any more or less intelligent than Victoria Spice. But then I guess it's like comparing the taste of dog shit to the taste of goat shit after having been forced to try each at knife point. Or something.

Calum, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure it's physically possible to be less intelligent than Posh.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Since when is having lots of money a sign of intelligence? Erm... George Bush anyone?

Calum, Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

envy is a terrible thing.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Talent != intelligence.
Luck != intelligence.

After watching her and Baby on The Daily Show and seeing both Baby and Jon Stewart make fun of her incredible density to her face and seeing her not get it, I thought she was dumb. After reading copious quotes from her, I remain convinced she is either amazingly thick or a fantastic actress who is ALWAYS in character.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I doubt she would recognise a meme if one were waved under her nose, and she probably wouldn't be able to quote any lines from Don DeLillo or the Dismemberment Plan, or write long essays on Bay Area hip hop '82-91, but she is a millionairess with a luxurious and idle life who gets to fuck David Beckham every night, while we sit here picking at the holes in our jumpers and musing about suicide and credit consolidation. By that very considerable yardstick, I'd say she was a hell of a lot more intelligent than any of us.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'd say that Wealth != Success....but it makes failure alot easier to cope with.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Money != Intelligence

I sincerely hope you're playing Devil's Advocate here.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The politics of envy? Because she can't sing and she's rich, whereas you can and you're not?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not poor, Marcello.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does she bother you so much, then?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This isn't going to devolve into some deranged defense of Libertarianism, is it?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Libertarianism's got nothing to do with it. I'd swap Victoria Beckham's life for mine any day - all that money! All that sex! Unburdened by the need to think so damned much! Better than the shit non-life which my "intelligence" has bestowed upon me.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

But to have Victoria's life....and to *NOT* be missus thicky thicky thick thick...
That must be better.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, who thinks Victoria will be the Zsa Zsa Gabor of the year 2054?

'tis a shame really, she was the hottest of the Spice Girls, but if she that dumb, it would be *painful* to court her.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No, and stop sneering. She took her opportunities, we didn't; thus she is intelligent and we are thick. End of story.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I completely agree that you are thick, Marcello.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

< /SNEERING >

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think there's any evidence intelligent rich people are happier than stupid rich people. The main problem with being stupid is that you can't understand things that other people can. This matters a lot if it means the difference between you having an ok job and a shit one, or between being exploited or not, or between being bored or not, but if you're rich enough pretty much all those negative consequences are irrelevant.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The main problem with being stupid is that you can't understand things that other people can.

Tom can you expand on this please?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Har har.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid people may have more bad stuff happen to them, but stupid people also find it easier to blame others for it. Whereas smart people end up blaming themselves and thus become miserable, so stupid people win.

dave q, Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

dan- marcello is playing devil's advocate. he doesn't believe in any of it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(Sorry about the outburst, Marcello. It was uncalled for. Have you considered writing satire?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I write it all the time. I understand my Nick Hornby pisstake on CoM caused some controversy on ILM while I was away.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but you should be getting paid much money for it because you're really good at it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

''I understand my Nick Hornby pisstake on CoM caused some controversy on ILM while I was away.''

ha! so the spector piece was a pisstake.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 March 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello:

It is almost like watching Coronation Street on PBS. Not all but most, Dan. "Cor blimey, Guv, that was a right witty satirical remark." "Howsabout you buy us a pint, eh!".

After watching her and Baby on The Daily Show and seeing both Baby and Jon Stewart make fun of her incredible density to her face and seeing her not get it, I thought she was dumb.

Haha you remember that too? It was amazing, he railed on them the entire time, to their faces, and she made some really hideous joke and no one laughed. So she goes, "Oh, I guess Americans don't get sarcasm like the Brits do," and Jon was like, "You didn't notice it dripping from my entire being the whole time I've been speaking to you." Easily the best interview, ever.

"One thing with Mrs Beckham, though - with all that money, you really think she'd get her teeth and acne scars sorted, wouldn't you?"

Much as I agree with this, if I'd have said it I'd be called a misogynist... but, hey.

The best thing about that was Baby was laughing and giving it right back, but Posh was sitting there with this petulant, confused look on her face. I also loved that Baby almost pissed herself when Posh tried to put Jon down.

Regardless of whether or not Callums may or may not be homophobic or whatever, the original subject of the thread is sexist, size-ist and just general evidence of poor taste and a lack of sensitivity. End of story.

Not to mention she's A TOTAL FOX!
