Dirty Three. S & D.

I couldn't believe it. No Dirty Three thread yet. I have Whatever You Love You Are and Horse Stories and like both of them. Though usually I find violins annoying I like Warren Ellis way of playing. He reaches an amazing emotional intensity. Which album should I buy next? Ocean Songs? Or the new one?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 23 March 2003 07:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The new one.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I saw the title of the thread, I was prepared to ramble on about the virtues of Horse Stories. Alas, you already have it. So, instead of that, I'll just agree with Kenan and suggest the newest one.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Just read at Amazon the following:
They might be few in number, but on She Has No Strings Apollo, the dirty three whip up a bleak, foreboding instrumental storm that's at least the equal of fellow travellers Godspeed You Black Emperor or Do Make Say Think.

That's exactly what I don't want from them. In a way postrock is the prog of the zero years for me. In the beginning I loved both these styles but now they seem too bombastic, too megalomaniac for my ears. And the crescendos and drones are extremely predictable and boring. I prefer their calmer stuff like on the beautiful At the Bar. Though I find that the noisy song after which is called Red is the second best on Horse Stories. Is She Has No Strings Apollo in this vein?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that a customer review? It was obviously penned by someone who views Dirty Three as a contemporary of those bands and not a predecessor. True, the album is slower and less "noisy" than some of their previous recordings, but rest assured there nothing predictable or boring about it.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Was the self-titled the one with Kim's Dirt and Everything's Fucked? If so, get that one. Probably their best after Horse Stories.

Mil, Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:49 (twenty-three years ago)

It was an amazon.co.uk staff review, Paul. The self-titled one contains those two tracks, Mil.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 23 March 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw em twice and It was really very special. On a sonic level I would bet they need to be seen live. But I'm completely unfamiliar with the material.

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever You Love, You Are holds a special place in my heart for being one of the first albums to get me into this sort of music, and is still their best effort in my opinion. Ocean Songs is also great.

Callum (Callum), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i love "i remember a time..." but the original greek song by arleta blows it right out the water.

that amazon review seems like they're trying to sell copies of "she has no strings" (which is really, really beautiful and kind of subdued)...

your null fame (yournullfame), Sunday, 23 March 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess. But I'm afraid some will be disappointed if they're expected a "storm." Nor is it especially "bleak" or "foreboding." It's brooding, daring, inventive, and pretty. Sez me.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 23 March 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ocean songs is one of the most beautiful albums i have ever heard...
what do all the post rock haters make of the dirty three?
i mean,i love some "post rock",but understand the complaints, but i think dirty three can be lumped in with them, but are far better...

robin (robin), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

the d3 don't seem to be so much about the huge buildups as an endless sort of weeping undulation

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

there's nothing remotely 'post rock' about the dirty three. being instrumental and having dynamics does not a post rock group make.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well i don't know what exactly defines post rock
the definition i was working from was music made with traditional rock instruments that abandons traditional rock form...
they are certainly lumped in with the scene, and i have heard them dismissed as such

robin (robin), Monday, 24 March 2003 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

in a sense they do share attributes with bands like Godspeed et al but in terms of song structure, etc they are quite traditional..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 24 March 2003 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

NOT postrock at all!

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 24 March 2003 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like the two albums I have, which are Ocean Songs and the Dirty Three. The self titled one has a much more angry and harder sound. Ocean Songs music have many more meditative and quiet sections.

"Authentic Celestial Music" off of Ocean Songs is my favorite.

I'd really like to hear Nick Cave do a record of his ballads with this band, preferably recorded live.

The time I saw the Dirty Three live was with Calexico at a Laundrymat bar and the sound system was blown out really bad, but they did what they could do to get across.

earlnash, Monday, 24 March 2003 04:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd really like to hear Nick Cave do a record of his ballads with this band, preferably recorded live.

this is a really good idea, but it would be even better without nick cave.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 24 March 2003 07:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice one, your null fame. But I'd really like a record by ALL the Dirty Three and Cat Power. On Moon Pix there was Jim White and Mick Turner and the concerts on the tour (where I discovered the D3) were absolutely mesmerizing. The combination Turner/Marshall is perfect. She is somewhere in the clouds whereas he assures the connection to mother earth.
On You Are Free there is Warren Ellis violin on one song and it is gorgeous.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 24 March 2003 08:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I love D3's music, but I often have trouble telling their albums apart. Which is, to me, often a sign that I only need to own one of them. If I had to narrow it down (and I might do so anyway), I'd keep the first T&G release.

Are they worth seeing live?

They're playing here at the end of the month for $300 (which is about £20). It's a lot of money, but I'm quite tempted to go to see what they're like, so I can decide if I should bother with their ATP next year.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

I will be bothering with their ATP, once we finalise numbers. £20 is more than I'd expect to pay to see them in the UK, but I'd probably shell out that much.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer Awesome 3.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Related, if you like D3: Eyvind Kang, especially Virginal Coordinates or The Story of Iceland. A little more "out" would be the new Scott Amendola Band: Believe. This one has Nels Cline on Guitar and Jenny Scheinman on violin.

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Also check out "The Proposition" soundtrack - Nick Cave & Warren Ellis collaborated for this one. Glorious!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 19 October 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

nick cave fronting the dirty three doing 'mercy seat' and 'shivers' at the big day out, many years ago, is one of the greatest things I've ever heard. got recorded for local radio, too.

Is this an awesome band?

Always sort of avoided them, thinking they were just another Godspeed whatevers but they most certainly are not. There's stuff on their myspace that even reminds me of the Dead C, but some of that might be the accent... So I should still get Horse Stories?

one year passes...

There's a POX going on on another music board following the ATP and London sets, and I must admit I'm struggling:

Authentic Celestial Music
Some Summers They Drop Like Flies
Sue's Last Ride
Everything Is Fucked
Red
I Should Have Gone Out Last Night
Sea Above, Sky Below
Hope
Alice Wading
I Remember A Time When Once You Used To Love Me

But that leaves no space for Deep Waters or Last Horse On The Sand or Some Things I Just Don't Want To Know or She Has No Strings or Indian Love Song or She Passed Through. Kind of impossible for me.

Are they still active? No new product since 2005. Obv Ellis is busy with Grinderman these days so I was just wondering if we will ever hear from them again. I miss them.

It's a beautiful record for sure, and Horse Stories is a minor classic. I saw them open for Beck in '96 when I was in high school and had no idea what to make of them... I got reintroduced to them like five years later and loved them. Haven't played one of their records in years, though... Probably time to revisit and see how I respond to them now.

I can think of several albums I would want in that format, starting with Eno's ambient ones.

sleeve, Monday, 9 January 2012 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to a few of the older albums today and this new one is on the rough and raucous side of things, quite free/improvised sounding - all meant very much as positives.

Totally loving the self-titled album from 1995 right at this moment though, it is really hitting the spot tonight.

only NWOFHM! is real (krakow), Monday, 9 January 2012 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

but only Mr. Turner still lives there; Mr. Ellis has settled in Paris and Mr. White in Brooklyn.

So only Turner still lives in Australia. I'm gonna listen. Ratliff from the Times likes it even though he notes:

The group’s albums have had superficial differences — longer or shorter songs, the occasional introduction of a new instrument or a guest singer — but they’re essentially rushings of the same river,

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

i think that's pretty otm. not a bad thing -- i think more bands should try to make albums that are just "rushings of the same river" instead of trying to reinvent the wheel constantly. if it ain't broke...

tylerw, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

I don't completely agree. I am glad Beatles albums changed slightly

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

well, yeah, it's not always the case. just with a band like dirty three, i'm not really interested in them putting out, i don't know, an electronic album or something. to me, the sound those three guys make together is endlessly enjoyable.

tylerw, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

they are so different than the beatles, i see them more as a jazz group tbh, like the records to me are an outgrowth of them playing together, exploring themes and improvising off them

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i think that's a more apt comparison.

tylerw, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

I guess with some bands it's fine. But I just feel like why do I need to spend 10 bucks or whatever on another Dirty 3 album or download, if the one I bought years ago does the trick. I want a new one to offer me something slightly different (although you're right that I do not want or expect it to be all electronic or reggae or something). But yea, maybe it's more like a jazz group operating within certain boundaries.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

First listen to this, I thought it sounded refreshingly different - at least the first couple of tracks. White really shines. It does settle in to their usual vibe as it goes on, but that's okay with me.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Saturday, 25 February 2012 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

they sound a lot more textury now in the guitars, burbling (tho that's not the right term) rather than accompanyish like they did on their first couple-few. kind of like 'cinder' but more... on, up, in motion.

but the playing seems a lot more sensitive and conversational, unlike 'whatever you love' (or whatever i can remember of it after being so turned off by it years ago).

j., Saturday, 25 February 2012 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

whatever you love was always my fav. this is great. i guess it's warren playing piano on the song i mentioned before, bc there's no violin. but it's a really interesting record, & p different from the others apart from when mick starts shredding.

Saw them live last night here in Glasgow, in the glorious setting of the auditorium at Òran Mór. They were really spectacularly good! Long, spiralling, improvisatory feeling takes, with Warren Ellis a high-kicking, writhing, PA-climbing, howling, utterly wonderful and wild showman at the front!

It's a thrilling record, for sure. It's more on the improv/unstructured end of their sound, rather like the last one. It's great, but I can't help but miss the more structured, composed side of them.

JonR345, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 23:58 (one year ago)

Saw them for the first time in Melbourne last weekend! So, so good. The set was almost three hours but it zipped by.

three months pass...

Their records are pretty good, but my god I forgot how insane they are live.

I am envious of everyone who got tickets to see them last night

sarahell, Tuesday, 24 March 2026 17:50 (three weeks ago)

Their very first US show was at GAMH in 1995 with santa cruz's BAKAMONO opening for $7.

I saw Eiso of Bakamono last night and he said he flew all the way from Tokyo to catch the show <3.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 24 March 2026 18:04 (three weeks ago)

Now that's dedication. Glad I was able to hook you up for tickets!

as always thank you Ned!

Really looking forward to their show next Monday. They were one of my dad’s absolute favorites—he owned their entire discography, collected all the live recordings, and traveled to see them with my mom in tow numerous times—so I expect it to be a cathartic one.

spastic heritage, Tuesday, 24 March 2026 23:40 (three weeks ago)

saw them last night, and

feels kinda harsh to say -- he seems like an amiable guy -- but i found the whole warren ellis experience exhausting. idk, maybe my fault for being sober

jim white is absolutely riveting though

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 April 2026 23:56 (one week ago)

I heard a lot of people complain about his schtick at Big Ears.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 5 April 2026 01:42 (one week ago)

That was my experience at Big Ears. I wasn’t so much in the mood for the Warren show. Enjoyed when they actually played music though.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 5 April 2026 01:42 (one week ago)

last night he claimed that they, as a band, had fucking torn big ears a fucking new one

mookieproof, Sunday, 5 April 2026 01:52 (one week ago)

ellis's stage presence is sort of exhausting even when he's just sitting down playing keys with nick cave

ufo, Sunday, 5 April 2026 03:38 (one week ago)

idk -- i saw cave + seeds + ellis a while back and can't imagine anyone was even paying attention to the latter

mookieproof, Sunday, 5 April 2026 03:59 (one week ago)

he doesn't have the presence

mookieproof, Sunday, 5 April 2026 04:01 (one week ago)

I had mixed feelings about it, I have some friends who loved it, and one who said it was the worst Dirty Three show he's ever seen (of many) and he was embarrassed for them. So ... it was divisive!

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 5 April 2026 04:09 (one week ago)

Talking or…?

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Sunday, 5 April 2026 04:21 (one week ago)

Yeah somewhat excessive yammering imo. And a bit of "Oh here comes the KA-RAZY Australian!" I can imagine it can vary from night to night, depending on his mood.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 5 April 2026 05:05 (one week ago)

I heard he had people show him photos on their phones?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 5 April 2026 12:34 (one week ago)

Sounds tedious

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Sunday, 5 April 2026 14:23 (one week ago)

Yah

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 5 April 2026 14:27 (one week ago)

i thought D3 was a hoot at Big Ears — Ellis' antics felt fun after a long day of music. Definitely over the top, but memorable.

tylerw, Sunday, 5 April 2026 15:26 (one week ago)

Saw them in Chicago last night, where they played for about 2.5 hours. I wasn't sure what to make of the first half hour or so, which seemed to consist mostly of improvisational noise, with Ellis occasionally turning to shout "yeah!" at the audience. But the bulk of the set was long versions of four tracks from the '90s; I was particularly happy to hear "Some Summers They Drop Like Flys" since Wherever You Love You Are is my favorite album of theirs.

There was a lot of stage patter from Ellis, but it was funny and heartfelt, so I didn't mind it. Had some nice words about Steve Albini, for instance. He was also amusingly worked up about a review he read of their Big Ears performance, and about Big Ears in general. "It's not the first nor the last time we got booked at the wrong festival!" "Maybe it's because we're under 65. Everyone else there was over 100." "If you're in your 70s and you have an electronic group, you can go play at Big Ears. They'll have a lot of slots opening up."

jaymc, Thursday, 9 April 2026 13:50 (five days ago)

lol

Dude is 61, lol, come on.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:32 (five days ago)

Yeah they were in the older contingent of the acts I saw at Big Ears. But Warren gonna Warren.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:34 (five days ago)

it's weird to me that he's so vocal considering they are an instrumental act iirc?

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:36 (five days ago)

i would not expect large amounts of talking from people who did not include words in their music

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:36 (five days ago)

He’s always been like that

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:37 (five days ago)

I only saw them in the late 90s, but that was the show: the balance between long beautiful instrumentals and the comedy of introducing these songs with extremely long titles. (In a similar way, I think of someone like Richard Thompson doing a full concert of grim, hurting songs but being jovial between them.)

Come On, (Eazy), Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:58 (five days ago)

yeah i would think it would help the "show" aspect of this band to have some comic relief between long songs

a (waterface), Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:59 (five days ago)

not that they need help with the show considering the maniac they have on violin

a (waterface), Thursday, 9 April 2026 14:59 (five days ago)

saw them 2-3 times in the 90s and yeah, always like this

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Thursday, 9 April 2026 15:00 (five days ago)

so what's the hubbub then?

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Thursday, 9 April 2026 15:02 (five days ago)

I think it was even more than usual at Big Ears, basically

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Thursday, 9 April 2026 15:03 (five days ago)

sounds like a Shellac show

Ah, according to Setlist.fm, this was from their new (2024) album, which I recall listening to and not really clicking with.

jaymc, Thursday, 9 April 2026 15:10 (five days ago)

The Big Ears show was shorter — 75 minutes — so having like a full third of that devoted to Warren rambling, inviting people to show him pictures of their pets on their phones, even handing the mic off to audience members to ramble was not so much charming as, will you guys please play some music? They only made it through like 2 1/2 actual songs.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 9 April 2026 15:12 (five days ago)

Yeah, that makes sense.

jaymc, Thursday, 9 April 2026 15:20 (five days ago)

huh…when they were at Pioneer works on Friday night (gawd what a magnificent room, what a pleasant place to spend a few hours listening to very good live music) it was pretty standard "ellis does schtick, band then does 15-209 mins of wordless beauty," which is precisely as it was at the Westbeth theatre center in '96: although I don't remember him playing keybs in '96…

veronica moser, Thursday, 9 April 2026 18:09 (five days ago)

pioneer works really is a fabulous room (not least because i can walk to it)

lol he did that in brooklyn too. i mean i totally believe that warren's dog dying hit him harder than his dad dying, and that's fine! crooning about 'bringing back' dead people over a 30-minute version of 'indian love song' was, however, tedious

mookieproof, Friday, 10 April 2026 05:10 (four days ago)

yeah that sounds ruff
