Find a song that everybody on ILM likes

...or at least one that no one dislikes too vehemently - and I mean a *famous* song, not something that nobody hates 'cause no one's ever heard of it.

I nominate AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" - everyone loves that one, yet it doesn't get enough praise to fall victim to an anti-canonic backlash.

Anybody who dislikes any of the proposed consensus songs, make yourself heard !

Patrick, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate that song so much !
How about Past Present and Future by the shangri las

anthony, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I predict failure.

Josh, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah "Past Present & Future" ist choice, nobody's gonna dislike that are they? gotta say the AC-DC one was a totally dumm nomination Patrick, I (heart) acker-dicker & I don't even like that song. Is there anyone who doesn't like the Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie", & if so what's your pathetic excuse, "too classic rock" or some crap. '60s girl-group is a safe-bet genre , but I bet there'll be some grinch-type who hates it for just that reason...

duane, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Predict Failure" is a good one too tho'...

duane, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would think everybody likes "ABC" by the Jackson Five and "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green. "Bring The Noise" has to be in the 95% range.

Mark, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like all the nominees so far, but everybody with warm blood in their veins has got to like "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks, am I right?

fritz, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Past, Present & Future" = not famous enough. For the most part, the people who would've heard it are people who would be predisposed to enjoy it (wasn't even much of a hit at the time).

Patrick, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Waterloo Sunset' is fine with me!

youn, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have not heard it, that frightens me.

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think "Radioactivity" by Kraftwerk is a pretty good choice... does anyone out there actually dislike this song? I can't fathom it. Of course I'm heavily into Kraftwerk lately, but still, you've gotta wonder about the mental constitution of someone who hates the 'Werk.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Human League - "Don't you want me?". Pulp - "Common People". ABC - "Poison Arrow".

In other words, find a song from Sheffield that everybody on ILM likes.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That AC/DC song is one of the few by the band that I loathe :)

Seeing that nobody voted dud in Kraftwerk C-o-D it must be Kraftwerk. "The Model" then?

other:

Pixies - 'Debaser'?

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would absolutely have predicted failure, too, on past evidence - but one or two of the nominations are pretty good bets, or as good as these things are likely to get.

Um - 'Maple Leaf Rag'.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everybody on ILM?

Tanya, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

like all of em so far except for Pulp - "Common People" i've never heard & ABC - "Poison Arrow" & the Pixies' "Debaser" i don't like. Do we have to tell you every time this happens ?

duane, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about something from 69 love songs though i do like common people

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pixies and Kinks not good. How about something by the Supremes? Everyone likes them, right?

Bill

Bill, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You'd no more be able to find a song on ILM that everybody loves than you'd be able to find a song on ILM that everybody *hates*. As evidenced by the fact that there has *never* been a band or artist or genre raised on ILM that has been so dire that someone hasn't stepped in and said "Hey, I *like* [n]!"

masonic boom, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Heard it on the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye. Make Dave Marsh a validated man.

Or else something by Dio.

mark s, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only Supremes song I like is "Love Hangover", which isn't by the Supremes, "Upside Down" is good too and so is "Theme from Mahogany"

tarden, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hate the Supremes, love "Upside Down".

I got it! One of these must be universally liked:

'Staying Alive', 'I Feel Love', and hell even the most rockist of rockers loves 'Le Freak', yes?

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No
No
Yes

i have one : Ring Of Fire

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Ring of Fire' = just allright.

another: Ace of Spades.

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ring of Fire: shite.

Has anyone disliked Waterloo Sunset yet? I by no means think it's great but it's quite a pleasant listen, so that may be our best bet.

Tom, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry to let everyone down, but i don't like Waterloo Sunset

gareth, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn you, Gareth! Ruining everything! :-) And you didn't supply an alternate, either. Humph.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Universal crowd pleasers? Wichita Lineman - shuuuurely? Or p'rups 'Tracks of My Tears'?

Missus Mo, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no kate yr right i didn't, but i'm quite happy to throw my weight behind Wichita Lineman, as suggested above

gareth, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar: No, no, no. You 'disco' people and your 'disco' records.

I still back Tom E on the Kinks. People that don't like it can resign. I like 'Wichita Lineman' too, though, like everybody else.

'Rattlesnakes'. 'Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?'.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

God Wichita fucking Lineman
That easy listening shite . oaky you guys do not know country
What about Candy Says

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm, I doubt you will find a song that I like.

Infact i am willing to bet a years worth of G&T's on the outcome.

Tanya, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sp. For 'oaky' read 'okay'?

I'm glad you don't mean it when you say we don't know country music (if that's what you're saying; it can be hard to tell). I mean, Tim Hopkins is reading this. Possibly.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox does not like 'Le Freak' therefor Pinefox does not exist. This is hardcore logic ;)

I'll nix both 'Waterloo Sunshite' and 'Candy Says'...sorry.

Okay another path, how about Blondie - Heart of Glass. Surely anyone who does not like this song also has no soul, yeah? And if that does not work we'll have to pull out the big one, yep, ABBA.

'Tears of a Clown' is a yes btw.

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cannot stand Debbie Harris Voice. How about Walter Carlos by Momus

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Paf. I doubt half of us have even *heard* that. I sure haven't.

'Heart Of Glass' is acceptable but not my favourite Blondie.

I don't think that that was the real fake Tanya Headon above - rather a fake fake one. Right?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like "Le Freak". All the other ones so far are cool with me.

Tanya - Okay, songs enjoyed by all ILMers who aren't professed music- haters then :).

Masonic Kate - oh, it would be fairly easy to find a performer no one here likes, I think. I don't think anyone has yet found a way to rehabilitate Michael Bolton.

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wichita Lineman? Wichita Lineman? Please say it's all a crazy nitemare.

As for 'Heart of Glass', without being able to see Debbie Harry her voice is far too annoying.

I back 'Waterloo Sunset', but some miserable bugger has already scuppered that I believe. So I'll have to canvas opinion for 'Hi-Ho Silver Lining'. What a stomper! Or failing that, 'Sunday Morning' by the Velvets. Possibly.

Add, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What time is Love / 3AM Eternal/ Last Train To Trancentral Unfinished Sympathy Out of Space The Rockerfeller Skank

again with the disco, I fear

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ouch.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*nixes everything ever recorded by the KLF that doesn't have Tammy Wynette on it*

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We are all on crack: the answer = "Rasputin" by Boney M. To hate = to hate life

Or "Rebel Rebel"?

Or something by Meatloaf...

mark s, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think anyone's nixed Marvin Gaye yet.

What about The Magic Number by DeLa Soul? Or Sitting On The Dock of the Bay? Or The Man Don't Give A Fuck by SFA?

I veto all Kraftwerk records.

Matt D'Cruz, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For that veto, i'll veto any Marvin Gaye, hell any motown record ;)

But, Boney M = excellent choice!

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ramones - I Wanne Be Sedated

Geoff, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rasputin is silly
i have not heard SRA
I like Marvin Gaye but hes no Stevie Wonder
I could go with rebel, rebel or i wanna be sedated, though .

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like the Ramones.

Rebel Rebel is 6 out of 10 but 6 in this case is enough.

"Surfin Bird"?

Tom, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll go with any Bowie, but not the Ramones.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Rebel Rebel' = okay as is any Bowie up till 'Let's Dance'.

And yes, 'Rasputin' is silly, that's the bleedin' point...jeez, a black guy sporting an afro with a fake beard doing a russian dance isn't exactly Tolstoy, innit? ;)

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a-ha: take on me.

scott, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone advocating Scandinavian pop will be sought out and killed; painfully.
So far i think we have either Rasputin or Rebel Rebe as near consensus votes.
Anyone want to veto

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rebel rebel seems to have the edge so far. bowie: the rift divider

gareth, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Waitwaitwait !

Yet to elicit any complaints: "Louie Louie", "Let's Stay Together", "Bring The Noise", "Don't You Want Me", "Common People", "Love Hangover" and "Theme From Mahogany" (unless they're on Motown, in which case Omar says nay), "Upside Down", "Ace Of Spades", "Unfinished Sympathy", "Rockafeller Skank", "Rasputin" and "Rebel Rebel" (I have chosen not to read anything into Pinefox's "ouch" comment).

Nixed on account of not famous enough: "The Man Don't Give A Fuck", "Out Of Space", "Hi-Ho Silver Lining", "Walter Carlos", "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken", "Rattlesnakes" and "Maple Leaf Rag".

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd go for Don't you want me. Failing that Cum on feel the noize by Slade or Only love can break your heart by Saint Etienne.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and also no dismissals of "Surfin' Bird", "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay" and "The Magic Number" so far.

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay" and "The Magic Number"

don't like these, sorry. don't know surfin' bird. what is that?

gareth, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

waitwait...'Out of Space' - The Prodigy was a top-10 hit in every country of Europe in 1992, so it is well-known and yes, gets my okay.

And ahem...I'll say all of Motown except Smokey Robinson.

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Surfin' Bird" = classic bit of utterly demented semi-verbal gibberish by surf band the Trashmen, from 1963 or 64. It made the ILM top 100 list, if I'm not mistaken.

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, so I'll take Omar's word on "Out Of Space", and now "Tracks Of My Tears" and "Tears Of A Clown" are back in the race.

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Louie Louie
this song annoys me to no end. I have to leave the room when it is playing .
, "Let's Stay Together"
Do not know it at all , "Bring The Noise"
I find this silly . I do not want our rep sonf to be a cheap novelty
Don't You Want Me",
I like this alot
"Common People",
This is one of my favorite songs peroid
"Love Hangover" and "Theme From Mahogany" (unless they're on Motown, in which case Omar says nay),
too much butter causes grease stains
"Upside Down", "Ace Of Spades", "Unfinished Sympathy",
do not know any of thses
"Rockafeller Skank", "Rasputin"
see the comment under brign the noise
"Rebel Rebel great song

How about these boots are made for walking

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A lot of excellent choices here, but I vote "Roadrunner" by The Modern Lovers. I hope it's famous enough. How can anyone dislike it? (Then again, I suppose people will... )

X. Y. Zedd, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MELT WITH YOU BY MODERN ENGLISH! AH! Anyone?

...anyone?

JM, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Patrick Calimero: I really admire the diligence of your post above, the way you categorize each suggestion. But I must add

1. My 'ouch' comment meant: I don't like this '"dance" 'music' "stuff"' of yours.

2. 'Rattlesnakes' and 'Heartbroken?', not famous??? Who are you trying to kid? Foul on Lloyd, I say. Referee!!

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I second "Don't You Want Me". Most of the other songs have gone unheard by me (including "Waterloo Sunset", which I probably have in my collection).

If we're going to nominate an AC/DC song, it should be "Back In Black". And get that namby-pamby disco shit out of here. 10,000+ people in Old Comiskey Park burning vinyl can't be wrong.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh, I do like 'Roadrunner'.

Jason, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excellent thread you crazy musos.

(sorry, these boots are covered in shite)

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack's version Buffalo Stance - Neneh Cherry Sign O The Times - Prince New England - Billy Bragg but sung by Kirsty to be on the safe side?

chris, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Rattlesnakes' and 'Heartbroken?', not famous??? Who are you trying to kid? Foul on Lloyd, I say. Referee!!

Well I'm sure Lloyd Cole's mom really likes them.

So do we disqualify any and all dance music in advance, Pinefox ? That would be sad.

Incidentally, "I Melt With You" blows.

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Back in Black: yes of course :)

Roadrunner = no; Pablo Picasso (or whatever the name is of that song by Modern Lovers) = yes

Don't you want me = allright.

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, Ms. Tori Amos is set to cover Lloyd's "Rattlesnakes" on an upcoming album of covers (including Eminem & 10 other folks' songs). A healthy smattering of fame is sure to follow. Or royalty checks, at the very least.

And no Beatles songs??? Am I missing something here? Granted, they'll get shot down as easily as anything else on this list. I'll pony up "I'm Only Sleeping".

And, hot damn, I DO have "Waterloo Sunset" in my mess of a music collection! (A purty song, sho nuff.) I should start spelunking for those Brian Wilson demos. You know - the RARE ones.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everything mentioned so far seems acceptable, or I haven't heard it.

Maybe we'd have more luck with TV themes. how about the Buffy one?

Graham, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Patrick C: considering the gleeful pot-shots taken by every poster so far at every record to get through... yes, we do. Life is sad. That much is for sure.

'Rattlesnakes' is not obscure. You people don't know what you're talking about. Stuart Murdoch knows it. He has it spelled out in fridge magnets.

David R: you're quite right re. Beatles. They ought to be on here, but people will always shoot them down. (Where I came in.)

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" song in Mary Poppins!

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surrender, by Cheap Trick. Soon, by My Bloody Valentine. Honky Tonk Woman, by The Stones.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

beach boys 'god only knows' omd 'souvenir' 'higher than the sun'

keith, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pulp blows. I'd second "Roadrunner" but it's already nixed. Did anyone nix the Bowie track yet? I'll support it. Sterling may be on to something with Cheap Trick's "Surrender" but surely someone who hates power pop or who can't disassociate the Trick from "I Want You to Want Me" will deep six that as well.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And if we're short on Beatles numbers, can I advance "And Your Bird Can Sing"?

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love "Honky Tonk Women" but there are too many Stones-hating party- poopers for that one to make it.

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mary Poppins song: total classic, anyone who hates it is the spawn of Satan. Love Honky Tonk Woman too and Soon and Higher than the Sun and God Only Knows :)

okay, okay last one for today:

Sly Stone - Dance to the Music or I Want To Take You Higher.

Even the most fundamentalist disco-burning rocker must like Sly. Right?

Omar, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My husband has just wondered aloud whether there is anybody, anywhere who doesn't like Cameo's 'Word Up'? If someone says nay here, then I can tell him yes. One only has to think of that red cod-piece and smile.

Missus Mo, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, red codpiece! Big hair in a box! Ah!

Saw that codpiece fellow @ the tail-end of the new Mariah Carey video. Still doing that juju that he do so well.

Sly Stone's offering HAS to be "Hot Fun in the Summertime". Hate him for the cocaine, hate him for the 'fro, hate him because he's beautiful, but you can't deny this song.

Is anyone tracking this bitch?

David Raposa, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm keeping track. But now there's too many songs, we need some more grouches to come in and tear everything to pieces - first time I've ever felt this way on ILM for sure !

Patrick, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pre-conscription Elvis, say, Heartbreak Hotel. Everyone must like this, seeing as it (may well have I'm not judging anything here) invented all popular music after 1956. Am I right? (Chorus of 'no.')

Bill

Bill, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i was going to suggest something by public enemy but then i remembered someone would disagree.

i seem to remember that even the smiths-haters liked "how soon is now?" i dissed it but more because it's not one of my favourites. i'll happily vote for it over "radioactivity" or something. i also remember nobody casting a dud vote for joy division. "transmission" maybe?

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well scroo yoo, Sundar! You're the one nay-sayer for Kraftwerk. Anyway, what about "Get Into the Groove"? Anybody?

Clarke B., Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nope. And I'm also shooting down "Rebel Rebel" and "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay."

Kerry Keane, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

okay i hate disney musicals so that Mary Poppins sacharine enema is out
I can deal with early elvis, but if we are going in that direction why don't we choose Jerry Lee Lewis.
In that vein, there are 100 Rolling Stones songs better then the one suggested (for example cocksuckers blues or brown sugar )
I really find My Bloody Valentine indie wankery and Cheap Trick boring .

New Suggestions :
Beck - Loser
Nirvana - All Apologies
Leonard Cohen- Chelsea Hotel
Jerry Lee Lewis-High School Confidental (sp?)
Madonna- Cherish
Bob Dylan _ Rainy Day Woman

and Dave Suggests :
Traveling Wilburys- Tweeter and the Monkey Man
Janis Ian- Seventeen
Joan Jett - Cherry Bomb
Low-Lazer Beam

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Move on Up" by Curtis Mayfield? "'Heroes'" by Bowie? "Crazy" by P. Cline?

scott p., Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crazy sounds great

anthony, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will kill Beck myself mercifully and gently before anybody else tears apart the man. That will never fly in *this* group. And Janis Ian and any Madonna song is heretofore nixed by me.

Kerry Keane, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wow...

don't know if I'm more surprised by the level of consensus or some of the out of line vetoes (someone hates everything on motown? c'mon!)

we probably don't need any more nominations, but how about "be my baby" by the ronettes? can you really dislike this song?

more than happy to go along with most others esp. roadrunner, heroes, crazy, all early elvis & jerry lee, all apologies, cherry bomb.

nix on the mary poppins and melt with you & rattlesnakes (purely on the basis of it being defended because of its potential to be covered by tori amos).

fritz, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO with varying degrees of emphasis to anything by Nirvana, Smiths, Leonard Cohen, Madonna , Billy Bragg, My Bloody Valentine, did i miss anyone? Traveling Wilburys, Janis Ian, those were jokes, right? Joan Jett - Cherry Bomb OK but it's by the Runaways, lead singer was Cherie Currie. Low, I've never heard them & doubt that I'd be alone, jeez don't waste time suggesting obscure stuff.

duane, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Pinefox is allowed to nix all dance music then I'm going to happily nix all rock'n'roll - sorry Elvis, Jerry, Kingsmen etc. (OK, I'll nix the examples given, but feel free to offer others). No to Roadrunner though I think I'm about the eighth person to point this out - J.Richman pisses me off. Doo-Wop and girl groups however equal YES, and Omar's acceptance of Smokey Robinson suits me fine.

Tom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How utterly silly yet addictive this thread turned out to be :)

Beck gets shot down (just to make sure you know). No Dylan :)

Yes to: "Heroes", "Be my Baby" and hell everybody loves "Move on Up".

AS much as I love "Brown Sugar" et al. I just know Sundar is waiting to veto ;) [btw. can't anyone -you know- delete that post by that fool who nixed all of Kraftwerk, we scientifically proved that Kraftwerk is classic with no dud votes].

Omar, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Heroes" - NO NO NO. Bowie's worst famous song. Utterly leaden.

"Move On Up" - actually no - Curtis sounds like he's wheedling you into celebration. "People Get Ready" yes, though.

Not going to argue with "Be My Baby" though it's a middling Spector track for me.

Tom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom: like you, did not intend to nix entire genre - was really trying to take them case by case. I agree that Prior Overall Generic Nixing = Dud for discussion.

Also agree with you re. the silly and overrated J Richman (what the heck is this 'Roadrunner' anyway?), will back Ronettes, am surprised at all-rock-and-roll nix. Shocked, in fact.

'Papa Don't Preach'.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm willing to pull back my veto of Motown if the Kraftwerk veto is pulled. Simple as that. It was a bit of a silly revenge "oh you want to play it LIKE THAT!" move. :)

I'll be waiting (and still have ace up sleeve, but someone has to keep Masonic Boom from her computer ;)

Omar, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Papa Dont Preach is the worst example of Madonna.
And about Low, David has heard it and David is like Tanya , he owns no music.

Okay new ones, since all of mine have died.
Hey Mr Postman- Ronettes
Leader of the Pack- Shangri Las (its John Waters favorite)
Night Clubbing - Iggy Pop
Blackbird- Beatles
Love on a farm boys wages- XTC
God save the Queen -sex pistols
Rock the Casbah- The Clash

and what is the singer songwriter hatred here, Dylan,Cohen,Janis Ian grrrr

anthony, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this revenge-veto thing is stupid.
the clash sort of suck but i could put up w/ lots of their songs as long as none of them are "rock the casbah", that song is a 4 minute turd.

duane zarakov, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I've got one. Throwing Muses, 'Counting Backwards'. No-one's going to nix this. They were sort of Orphic unheimlich domestic poetesses. From Amherst.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

More weeding out: say goodbye to "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "Higher Than The Sun".

Dubious on grounds of unheard by too many, unless can be proven otherwise : that Low song, "Love On A Farmboy's Wages", "Counting Backwards" (sorry again, Pinefox).

I'm strongly tempted to retaliate against Tom's nixing of all early rock and roll by dismissing all Brit indie from this thread, but I'm too much of a gentleman ;)

I think Ned needs to get his butt on here. My tastes go along with the consensus too much. By the time HE gets done with this thread, we'll be lucky if 3 songs are left standing.

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I've got one. Throwing Muses, 'Counting Backwards'. No-one's going to nix this. They were sort of Orphic unheimlich domestic poetesses. From Amherst.
Pinefox I can't tell if this is sarcasm or fuckin what.

duane, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I also don't like "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Counting Backwards" gets yes vote here :) As does 'God save the Queen' and 'Nightclubbing' although I prefer the Grace Jones version.

Patrick, thoughts on Sly Stone?

Omar, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar - No complaints against the Sly Stone songs, I love all the ones suggested so far.

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Virginia Plain' - Roxy Music

OR

'I Say a Little Prayer' - Dionne Warwick

stevie t, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I fucking hate Sly Stone. I fucking hate "Common People" as well.

I venture: The Banana Splitz Theme Tune. Something so cheesy, how can you not love it?

masonic boom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the theme tune to quincy?

gareth, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Banana Splitz theme tune is rubbish. All theme tunes are rubbish.

Tom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this is a really funny thread idea. kudos patrick!

I've liked most of the songs mentioned except "You Shook Me All Night Long." SERIOUS redneck song where I come from.

How can anyone not like "Waterloo Sunset?" Or "ABC?" You haven't an ear for melody if you don't like those songs (unless you have something personal against them, as I with "You Shook Me...").

How about "Ziggy Stardust?" It has the pop hooks for the people who like that, plus it's really wierd for the people that like that.

Blake, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah well, goodbye to Sly it is :(

Virginia Plain: yes, of course.

Gareth...is that by Nightmare on Wax? Already I hear Patrick complain Nightmare on Who? In that case: yes.

Omar, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Roxy: yes. 'I Say A Little Prayer': nein danke.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

omar, quincy as in the late 70s medical drama/detective show starring jack klugman. i was unaware of any nightmares on wax record with a similar title (but then i only know aftermath).

tom, while many theme tunes are indeed rubbish, banana thing included, quincy is most certainly not rubbish. the phrase you are most surely looking for is "dude, that quincy music rocks"

gareth, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

B-b-but even the Quincy theme pales beside the majesty that is The Rockford Files theme!

stevie t, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I'll put my vote on Virginia Plain. Ziggy would be good, too.

And even the cRockford Files theme had not a patch on the utter and complete BLOCKBUSTER that was the Dallas theme. Oh, the glitz, oh the glamour shining in the sunlight with those horns!

masonic boom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I also nix early rock 'n' roll I'm afraid. But how's about Mercury Rev's 'Frittering', Flaming Lips' 'Race for the Prize', Smith's 'How Soon Is Now?' or Pearl Jam 'Alive'? Probably not going to get very far these suggestions.

Add, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No problem here with Virginia Plain. Surprised Pinefox doesn't like Say A Little Prayer. Other Bacharach? "Walk On By"? "The Look Of Love"?

Pearl Jam: dud. Mercury Rev: can't remember so not one of their best. Flaming Lips: dud dud dud dud dud dud. How Soon Is Now: yes but we've vetoed it already.

Tom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

to be honest i think you'll have a hard time convincing anyone of the merits of (spits out name) pearl jam.

although surely the ironic rehabilitation of grunge is set for great eastern st/curtain rd soon? after all, that stuff has kitsch value n'est pas?

gareth, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know what? I think 'Virginia Plain' has it! If it can create an entente cordiale between the mighty and disparate minds of Omar, the Pinefox and Kate, I think it is clearly SUR L'ARGENT!

stevie t, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Virginia Plain seems to be doing well. It gets my vote.

Blake, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i cannot disagree with virginia plain because i, *gulp*, have never heard roxy music

gareth, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth - quick, go out & get a Roxy Music record now!

duane, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A Few Suggestions:

Shake Your Booty - KC & the Sunshine Band/Death Disco - PIL/Sh-Boom - The Chords/Boogie Wonderland - Earth, Wind & Fire/Jump Around - House of Pain/Surf City - Jan & Dean/I'm A Boy - The Who/Goin' Back - The Byrds/Higher & Higher - Jackie Wilson/Tighten Up - Archie Bell & the Drells

But would happily settle for Virginia Plain or the Rockford Files theme tune or God Save the Queen

scott, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth!!! No Roxy Music!!! I'm SHOCKED!!! Shocked and HORRIFIED!!! Do it! Now! Don't make me come over there and box your ears!

No disco. Any and all disco will immediately be rejected by me. Only genre I hate worse than wibbling twee is disco.

masonic boom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anthony suggested "Please Mr Postman" earlier, but it's by the Marvelettes, not the Ronettes and thus falls under Omar's no-Motown veto.

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ha, I feel like the Soviet Union in the U.N. back in the days :)

As a sign of good will I'll free 'Papa was Rolling Stone' by Tempations from the veto.

Omar, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So NOT ONE person here dislikes any of these ?

Let's Stay Together (Al Green)
Don't You Want Me
Ace Of Spades
Unfinished Sympathy
Surfin' Bird
Cum On Feel The Noize (Slade)
Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Saint Etienne)
These Boots Are Made For Walkin'
Back In Black
Buffalo Stance
Sign O' The Times
A New England (Kirsty MacColl)
Pablo Picasso (Modern Lovers)
I'm Only Sleeping (Beatles)
Surrender (Cheap Trick)
Honky Tonk Women
God Only Knows
Souvenirs (OMD)
Word Up
Transmission
Cherry Bomb (Runaways)
Crazy (Patsy Cline)
Be My Baby
Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones)
People Get Ready (C. Mayfield)
Leader Of The Pack
Nightclubbing (Iggy)
Blackbird (Beatles)
God Save The Queen
Virginia Plain
Ziggy Stardust
Death Disco
Sh-Boom (The Chords)
Jump Around
Surf City
I'm A Boy (The Who)
Goin' Back (Byrds)
Higher And Higher (J. Wilson)
Tighten Up (Archie Bell)

I would suggest tearing down a couple of these before making any new suggestions :)

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also,

a. "Buffalo Stance" is being dismissed on the Neneh Cherry thread, but other threads don't count, so it stays.

b. Anthony wasn't clear about whether he thinks "Honky Tonk Women" is a dud, so it stays.

c. Surely "Death Disco" is too weird to fall under the many disco vetoes.

Also not yet dismissed : "Walk On By" and "The Look Of Love".

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Virginia Plain does it for me.

Add, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, boy.

Junk the following: Ziggy, House of melon-farming Pain, Cameo (!?!?!), all the Stones songs mentioned to this point, Sex Pistols, Lemmy, Ms. Sinatra, "Pablo Pisacco".

I'd shoot down more, but I didn't want to be a ballhog. (Or a tugboat, for that matter.)

David Raposa, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim Curry's Sweet Transvestite....bitchslap that, and I'm calling up Meatloaf.

Geoff, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No "Sweet Transvestite" for me, sorry, and that goes tenfold for "Time Warp", in case anyone gets any funny ideas.

Howzabout "Ghost Town" by The Specials ?

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is that the Stranglers version of 'Walk on By'? If so then no nix, if not then big nix. As for 'Look of Love'...pfffff! Thats a veto by the way.

Add, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unfinished Symphony's a drag.

scott, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

damn, I was thinking of the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony. Unfinished Symphony's the Massive Attack one isn't it. I like that one.

scott, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Huey Lewis and the News - Heart & Soul?

Nicole, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Only a curmudgeon would knock out "Unfinished Sympathy"!

Speaking of curmudgeonly, "God Save The Queen" = completely useless song. No sir, I don't like it!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm asserting myself: no to "Cum on Feel the Noize," "Back in Black," "Sign o' the Times," "Brown Sugar," "Nightclubbing," "Blackbird," and "Jump Around."

I'd like to note that as of yet, no one has typed a single negative syllable about "Be My Baby," which my hopes here are pinned on. Honestly: how could you not like "Be My Baby?"

And well done to whoever suggested "People Get Ready," which I think will fare better here than Cat Stevens' similarly-themed "Peace Train."

Nitsuh, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kirsty mccoll, nein danke.

all the other songs in patrick's list i either like (to some extent) or haven't heard. hope that helps ...

rener, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stevie: good on for you for suggesting the Roxy. Hope it wins.

Tom E: just don't like that song somehow... and there's other 'classic' Bacharach that doesn't do it for me either (inc. the ones you mention). BUT I'm not knocking him in general, not at all.

Patrick C: since when did anyone knock out Lloyd? Once again: foul.

Dismiss: Motorhead, Massive Attack, 'Jump Around' (aargh!).

Meta-issues of nature of this thread not yet discussed. Will return to this.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Would those Lloyd Cole songs really be known to most of ILM's posters, or even a large number of them, Pinefox ? Maybe I'm wrong about this and he has attained a level of exposure and fame in Europe that I'm unaware of, but I doubt it.

I'd love to hear about the meta-issues of the nature of this thread.

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got to admit to not reading this whole thread (I'm at work at can't waste ALL my time...) but have to cast a vote for "Be My Baby".

Or what about "Respect" by Aretha?

Sean, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Respect is one of the most irritating songs of all-time, so begone!

Be my baby = yes, just makes it because of Scorcese.

Lloyd Cole: it's bye-bye to you.

Omar, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So for the guy who just checked -- exactly *what* is left, anyway? Is there an actual candidate pool or random lists?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going to nix the Runaways, Byrds and Huey Lewis which by my reckoning leaves;

Let's Stay Together (Al Green) Don't You Want Me Surfin' Bird Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Saint Etienne) Buffalo Stance I'm Only Sleeping (Beatles) Surrender (Cheap Trick) Honky Tonk Women God Only Knows Souvenirs (OMD) Transmission Crazy (Patsy Cline) Be My Baby People Get Ready (C. Mayfield) Leader Of The Pack Virginia Plain Death Disco Sh-Boom (The Chords) Surf City I'm A Boy (The Who) Higher And Higher (J. Wilson) Tighten Up (Archie Bell) Ghost Town

Billy Dods, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned - These are the songs that no one has a problem with so far :

Let's Stay Together (Al Green)
Don't You Want Me
Surfin' Bird
Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Saint Etienne)
Buffalo Stance
I'm Only Sleeping (Beatles)
Surrender (Cheap Trick)
God Only Knows
Souvenirs (OMD)
Transmission
Cherry Bomb (Runaways)
Crazy (Patsy Cline)
Be My Baby
People Get Ready (C. Mayfield)
Leader Of The Pack
Blackbird (Beatles)
God Save The Queen
Virginia Plain
Death Disco
Sh-Boom (The Chords)
Surf City
I'm A Boy (The Who)
Goin' Back (Byrds)
Higher And Higher (J. Wilson)
Tighten Up (Archie Bell)
Ghost Town (Specials)

(Huey Lewis' "Heart And Soul" nixed for having worst guitar solo ever, tied with "Power Of Love", also by Huey)

Feel free to shoot down the ones you dislike - you're just the man for the job ;) - and nominate other candidates for universally loved- by-ILM songs :).

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh, minus the ones that Billy Dods nixed while I was typing that.

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whoops, try again (forgot I can't stand the Stones)

'I'm going to nix the Runaways, Byrds and Huey Lewis which by my reckoning leaves;

Let's Stay Together (Al Green) Don't You Want Me Surfin' Bird Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Saint Etienne) Buffalo Stance I'm Only Sleeping (Beatles) Surrender (Cheap Trick) God Only Knows Souvenirs (OMD) Transmission Crazy (Patsy Cline) Be My Baby People Get Ready (C. Billy Dods, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, I nixed by band name, not by song!

Begone, you damn "Buffalo Stance" & "God Save the Queen". And "Leader of the Pack". And "Crazy".

David Raposa, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nix those particular Al Green, St Etienne, Beatles tracks.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since Rasputin was nixed on the grounds — both specious AND untrue — that it was "silly", I propose JOAN JETT and the BLACKHEARTS, and the unimpeachable yea epoch-making cover-version of the Arrows' "I Love Rock'n'Roll": in hommage to the thread we inhabit and (let's face it) the air we breathe. Who nixes this has not heart, nor brains, nor lungs.

mark s, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"At Last I am Free" Robert Wyatt's version

So, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tho obviously the best thing Joan J (or anyone else) has ever recorded is: "Hate Myself for Loving You", about which all the same things apply.

mark s, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some others to consider:

Love Comes Quickly - Pet Shop Boys
This Night Has Opened My Eyes - The Smiths
Cities In Dust - Siouxsie and the Banshees
True Faith - New Order
Life In One Day - Howard Jones (I'm guessing this one's a longshot...)
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
Perfect Way - Scritti Politti
Housequake - Prince
Need You Tonight - INXS
Bring On The Dancing Horses - Echo and the Bunnymen
Join In The Chant - Nitzer Ebb
Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
Go - Moby
Stigmata - Ministry

Dan Perry, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and "Sh-Boom" can take a flying leap because of the unfortunate a capella connection I have with it.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

all dan's choices except "gimme shelter" by the already-nixed-lots-of- times rolling stones are unnacceptable in new zealand (those records are all actually BANNED here)...OMD are still hanging on but i don't remember that song & suspect i would not like it if i did...only love will break your heart by st etienne is also a bummer..."buffalo stance" ditto...can we unite behind mark sinker's choice, i can hang w/ joan j. if everyone else can.

duane, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I'm with Mark, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll", yup. Although it's too bad we had to leave Cherie behind, "Cherry Bomb" would have worked for me.

Or how about: "Communication Breakdown", "All the Young Dudes", "River Deep Mountain High", "Son of a Preacher Man", "Bang a Gong", "Pretty in Pink", "Hallelujah"?

And speaking of homages, did anyone mention "Pop Muzik"? Or does that get the disco nix?

Arthur, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

those're all good 'cept "Pretty in Pink" & i don't know what "Hallelujah" you mean. If Leonard Cohen , can't get w/.

duane, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Let's Stay Together" made it through 130 posts or so, so that's our best bet yet. Sure you can't be persuaded, pinefox?

Mark, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like all the versions I've heard, Duane, but my favorite is the John Cale one. So let's call it that.

Arthur, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh well if it's gonna come down to that "radioactivity" gets at least a 6 out of 10. i mostly just meant it as an example of something i'm lukewarm towards. actually i loved the version on the mix so i don't know why i chose it as my example. don't let me be the veto for that one.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nix The Smiths, Echo, and Moby. Nominate "You Shook Me All Night Long"

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

see, the thing is, for me, "like" implies some level of enthusiasm for the song. i don't actively dislike "i'm a boy". i just never think about it or have any need to listen to it. if it came on right now, i'm not sure how i'd feel because i haven't heard it in a long time. i think i remember the harmonies being somewhat cloying but i'm not sure how i'd feel if i heard it now. it's just not really my cup of tea and i'm happy to let other people drink it. i don't feel enough hostility to say i want to veto the song but i don't know that i can agree that "everyone on ilm likes this song" because i don't really. songs on the list i like (i haven't heard a lot; asterisks denote a special fondness for the song): "surfin' bird"

"back in black"

"surrender"*

"god only knows"*

"transmission"*

"leader of the pack"

"nightclubbing"*

"blackbird"

"god save the queen"*

"ziggy stardust"*

"death disco/swan lake"*

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, "Surfin' Bird," get the hell outta here. You're annoying me. (Sorry, guys.) So, I smell a Kraftwerk renaissance of sorts?...

Clarke B., Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Pop Muzik" sadly falls under the quite vehement disco veto. Sundar's ban on "Radioactivity" has been removed, so Kraftwerk is back in the race. I wish I knew that damn song.

Patrick, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let's Stay Together (Al Green)
I think Al Green is better as a preacher then a musican -VETO

anthony, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

These are yes:

River Deep Mountain High - Ike & Tina

I Love Rock & Roll (good call again Mark, although Rasputin will live on in our hearts ;)

Halleluja if it is Happy Mondays: yea, if Leonard C. then delete. Don't know the John C. version. Sorry.

breaks down and cries: I admit I haven't heard Death Disco

Now: a lil'bit of indie/ a lil' bit of pop/ a lil'bit of fun:

Canonball - The Breeders.

Omar, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[Can I just protest at Slade being nixed as MULLET-ROCK!? Find Other Reasons PLEASE!!]

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James Brown, 'Sex Machine'. What's not to like? Veto only at the risk of appearing unfunky.

Jordan, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What, you want funk? "FLASH LIGHT"!!!!!!!

tarden, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll gladly proclaim myself un-funky in this world of disco-basher and say no thanks to James Brown's overrated ditty.

But 'Flashlight' is a big fat YES!

Omar, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark Pitchfork: sorry, don't want to spoil the party, but I don't know my Al Green. It can't stay.

I totally veto the spin-doctored Joan Jett campaign on No-one's Ever Heard Of This Stuff grounds.

Please let's stick with Roxy.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Meta-issues:

1. This thread is the reverse of the ILM Top 100 project (which I disliked greatly). Why? Because ILM100 was about taking lots of idiosyncrasies and melting them down in a big averaging machine (thus negating them) - whereas this thread is about naming something as 'broadly acceptable' as you can think of, and then sending it through everyone's idiosyncrasies to see if it can survive them. In that ('conceptual', not 'empirical') sense, I think that this thread might be almost as good as the ILM100 was bad.

2. The other thing, though, is - how does it affect our view of the songs? Suppose a song that you like makes it and wins - doesn't it then feel, in some sense, so universally acceptable as to be bleached of the colours of particularity and love?

I hope I don't *quite* mean the very dull old syndrome of We Hate It When Our Favourite Alternative Music Becomes Successful. (This is a different forum from The Charts, anyway.) Rather, something about averages (or medians, or means, or whatever) being (at least intuitively) uninteresting.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i see this as being a parallel of the ILM 100 rather than its antithesis. the top100 didn't really get everyones favourites but the records everyone thought were good (the averaging effect). this isn't going to get everyones favourites either, but that which everyone finds acceptable (averaging effect again)

i liked the ILM100, was disappointed with its conservatism and predictability though. what i hoped would happen would be that the individual 40s got put up. unfortunately that never really happened (i put my own up on my site)

gareth, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox's Joan Jett veto disallowed on grounds on obvious (surely momentary) insanity. (Propose Pinefox not allowed to veto on grounds that HE has not heard something)

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Joan Jett too-unfamous veto overturned on grounds of "I Love Rock and Roll" having spent SEVEN FUCKING WEEKS at # 1 in Billboard. And if "Let's Stay Together" got the shaft for the same reason, well that was also a # 1, so that's another veto lifted :-p.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never mind, "Let's Stay Together" had already been dismissed by Anthony. Also, I gotta say I'm as outraged as Mark by Slade being dismissed as "mullet-rock" (monster-sideburns rock, maybe). I agree with Gareth that the ILM 100 (which I liked) would have been improved by people posting their individual lists. The thread is still there for those who want to repent (maybe Nick can help by putting up the funny blue letters leading to that page). I like Pinefox's ideas about this thread.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, kids, but having-heard-something is (as far as I can tell) established by precedent as a criterion for this thread. So goodbye to Jett and Green, however many units they may have shifted.

Gareth is right - but so am I.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was proposing that PINEFOX is not allowed to use the i-have-not-heard veto: same as Tanya H cannot use the i-do-not-like veto.

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[unless he wuz of course kidding, anthony has announced elsewhere that HE wears his mullet on his CHIN!!]
beard rock is kewl by me

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh - I see. I SEE. I'll have to go away and think about what this means.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i thought we were getting close to a be my baby & virginia plain not only NOT disliked but actively liked by many.

and where is this place where no-one has heard of joan jett but lloyd cole wears ermine-collared robes? I'd like to visit.

no?

fritz, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have not heard it = BAD reason

Most ILMers wouldn't have heard it = GOOD reason

This admittedly requires a little guesswork, but dude, "I Love Rock and Roll" is SO not in a grey area.

I doubt you could find more than a handful of songs that everyone on ILM has heard anyhow. Maybe "I Will Always Love You". I'll settle for heard-by-most.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yo, "I will always love you" is a BITCHEN song (Dolly Parton's orig. & Alex Chilton's "valium" version)...it's too late to start throwing new stuff in the mix though I guess.

duane, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

even I can't nix virginia plain, but what happend to Go and Outter Space

Ed, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's safe to say Everyone loves "We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters.

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No its not.

Ed, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's left on the list, anyway? Patrick?

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GYPSY TRAMPS AND THEIVES !

anthony, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Patrick: Sorry, I can't accept what you're saying.

Fritz: this place you refer to is called Where The Pinefox Lives. You are not invited to visit, unless - contrary to appearance - you were not being sarcastic about Lloyd Cole.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Two can't (I think) fail nominations. A) Teen Spirit, by Nirvana. B) Loaded, by Primal Scream.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

don't like either of them. never really connected with nirvana. screamadelica has its moments, but loaded is surely not one of them

gareth, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now we're left with :

Don't You Want Me
God Only Knows
Souvenirs (OMD)
Transmission
People Get Ready (C. Mayfield)
Virginia Plain
Death Disco
Surf City (Jan & Dean)
I'm A Boy (The Who)
Higher And Higher (J.Wilson)
Tighten Up (Archie Bell)
Ghost Town (Specials)
Communication Breakdown
All The Young Dudes
River Deep Mountain High
Son Of A Preacher Man
Bang A Gong
Radioactivity
I Love Rock and Roll
I Hate Myself For Loving You (Joan Jett)
Cannonball (Breeders)
Flash Light (Parliament)
Out Of Space (Prodigy, right ?)
Gypsies Tramps & Thieves (Cher)

"Flash Light" isn't disco enough for the disco nix, and also I had forgotten to put "Out Of Space" back in the race after Omar let me know that it wasn't as obscure as I suspected.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pinefox: visit, definitely. immigrate, no. but my comments weren't meant as a bash. I like your dogged insistence on Lloyd Cole's supremacy. I promise to revisit my copy of rattlesnakes, maybe i missed something.

And, in further defense of mr. fox... it is fair enough to veto a song on the basis of not having heard it. We can't very well agree on all liking a song if we haven't all heard it, right?

I think we can actually answer this question - there have been plenty of suggestions that still have not been shot down. Does it seem reasonable to: 1. set a deadline on new suggestions 2. then have a final round of vetoes

Or... is it more fun to let the question continue in a prepetual state of flux until we get bored with it? That seems just as appropriate to me.

fritz, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's noon here in Montreal. What do you say we allow 3 more hours for new submissions ? After 3 PM Montreal time, we can all start tearing down each other's choices until there's only one song left standing, which will be declared the winner.

GO !!

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought "Go" was voted out...?

Let's toss some things up into the air:

Shout - Tears For Fears
Our Lips Are Sealed - The Go- Gos
Manic Monday - The Bangles
Hell's Bells - AC/DC
Animal - Def Leppard
Don't Be Cruel - Bobby Brown
Cream - Prince and the New Power Generation
Scenario - A Tribe Called Quest
Let's Go All The Way - Sly Fox
Happy Hour - The Housemartins
Jane Says - Jane's Addiction
Adnan's - Orbital
Poison - The Prodigy
Everything Counts - Depeche Mode
Whip It - DEVO
Big Time - Peter Gabriel
Never Say Never - Romeo Void
I Eat Cannibals - Toto Coelo
52 Girls - B-52s
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - traditional
Dry The Rain - Beta Band

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Then the final round of vetoes will be anything-goes, anyone can veto any song for any reason (including not having heard it), as long as (and that's the important part) you say WHY you're giving it the shaft.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is fair enough for ANYONE EXCEPT THE PINEFOX to veto a song on the basis of not having heard it...
The Pinefox often says he LIKES the songs of Lloyd Cole — but this does not prove he has HEARD any of them!!

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Off the currently sanctioned list I cannot recall the following songs:

Souvenirs
Virginia Plain
Death Disco
I'm A Boy
Tighten Up (unless it's the same as the Electronic song)
All The Young Dudes
Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves

Unless someone can convince me that I know and like these, they're gonna have to go.

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(ps when did Nitzer Ebb fall? I thought that was a VERY brave suggestion...)

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nay to "Cream" ("Bang A Gong" is already nominated anyhow) and "Shout" from Dan's list.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nitzer Ebb got the shaft when Duane nixed all of Dan's choices (save the already-vetoed "Gimme Shelter").

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone did a broad veto of everything on my initial list except "Gimme Shelter" (look for the "banned in New Zealand" comment). I was hurt, but now I have rallied.

Pinefox must appreciate that I have resisted my initial impulse to list rave anthems.

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look Virginia Plain stays, just too many votes for some "i haven't heard it because I'm from Mars" to spoil it.

Now Mr. Perry list's:

No to:

Manic Monday - The Bangles Our Lips Are Sealed - The Go- Gos Animal - Def Leppard Don't Be Cruel - Bobby Brown (a joke right?) Scenario - A Tribe Called Quest Happy Hour - The Housemartins (fuck those arseholes!) Jane Says - Jane's Addiction (the only bad song they did) Everything Counts - Depeche Mode (not it doesn't - go away) Big Time - Peter Gabriel Never Say Never - Romeo Void I Eat Cannibals - Toto Coelo 52 Girls - B-52s God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - traditional Dry The Rain - Beta Band

Yes to:

Shout - Tears For Fears Hell's Bells - AC/DC Let's Go All The Way - Sly Fox (aceness!) Adnan's - Orbital Poison - The Prodigy (not as good as rave-era Prod. but okay) Whip It - DEVO (can't argue wit dat!)

Now before the deadline I'll add all of my aces (someone please kidnap Masonic Boom for the time being ;)

I give you:

ABBA: Knowing Me, Knowing You/ Dancing Queen/ Summer Night City

One of these 3 will be liked by everyone or the Darkside wins

Omar, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't follow this thread any more, but... my HATRED of Abba is rivalled by few other things in this world. I cannot accept any Abba songs. No, none of them.

masonic boom, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is absolute bollocks! I've been framed! The minute I mention ABBA Masonic Boom enters. Oh the humanity! I'm off to the mountain going to contemplate humanity's evil heart.

Omar, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Can't take my eyes off of you" any version is nominated. Ver Prodigy are nixed, as is the Devo track, on the grounds that I hate it.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No to all Prodigy, Sly Fox & Tears for Fears nominations.

Did Be My Baby get knocked off? I still go with that or Ike & Tina - River Deep, Mountain High.

, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everything that Omar just said 'Yes' to, I veto. Not being perverse - just don't like or haven't heard.

Are nominations still open? I had a good idea earlier but have forgotten it. I daresay we have enough now, anyway.

I only know the Roxy, by the way, cos I heard it at a disco last year and Stevie T told me what it was. Even now I can't remember how it goes.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nix "Can't take my eyes off of you".

Enter: I Wanna Be Your Dog - The Stooges

Omar, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Be My baby" is still in. Vetoes on ground of not having heard tunes not admissible until 45 minutes from now :).

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I nominate "When Doves Cry" by Prince.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

38 minutes left to make new nominations.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, it's not just me, it's Paul shouting in the background now (and not just at TOTP) - nix on that Prince song (sorry Dan) but we will both go for Be My Baby.

masonic boom, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

final nominations: Love - Alone Again, Or Desmond Dekker - The Israelites Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I could Cry RUN DMC - Mary Mary The Creation - Makin' Time, or How Does It Feel to Feel The Equals - Baby Come Back Spinal Tap - Gimme Some Money

fritz, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WAAH! No one likes my songs!

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BZZZZZZT !!

Nomination time is over !

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grab your guns, it's time to weed out the crap. You can veto any of the nominated songs, for any reason, including not having heard it. The only requirement is to to say WHY you are dismissing it. The last song remaining wins the title of most broadly beloved of ILM posters.

List of nominees to follow in a few minutes.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

THE NOMINEES

Don't You Want Me (Human League)

Note : All vetoes on account of not having heard some of the songs have been ignored. But NOW they're allowed :)

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First off, "Gimme Some Money" is out 'cause Spinal Tap has done much better, and The Creation and Orbital get the axe 'cause too obscure.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and BE MY BABY, damn it!

fritz, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just to be pedantic the T Rex song is actually Get it on. All remaining are ok apart from the Creation, who are dull and overrated.

(do we need two Joan Jett songs though?)

Billy Dods, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the following songs have to go because I have absolutely no idea how they go:

God Only Knows (Beach Boys)

Souvenirs (OMD)

Virginia Plain (Roxy Music)

I'm A Boy (The Who)

Tighten Up (Archie Bell & The Drells)

Ghost Town (The Specials)

Gypsies Tramps & Thieves (Cher)

Alone Again Or (Love)

Israelites (Desmond Dekker)

Makin' Time (The Creation)

Baby Come Back (The Equals)

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Souvenirs (OMD) Death Disco (Public Image Limited) Surf City (Jan & Dean) Tighten Up (Archie Bell & The Drells) I Love Rock and Roll (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts) I Hate Myself For Loving You (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts) Cannonball (The Breeders) Gypsies Tramps & Thieves (Cher) Makin' Time (The Creation) How Does It Feel To Feel (The Creation) Gimme Some Money (Spinal Tap)

All nixed cos I've never heard them which is quite embarassing, I've never seen spinal tap.

Anyway of the rest AC/DC Hells bells is out for being stadium rock wankery. The rest I either quite like or have no strong feelings about.

Ed, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fritz - I've corrected the "Be My Baby" omission up there - ah, the joys of moderating privileges ;)

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anthony, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anthony, if something is not the best by someone, is it still liked and in?

Ed, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Silly" and "not their best" aren't necessarily grounds for vetoing, so "People Get Ready", "Radioactivity" and "Flash Light" are still in.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I object to "River Deep Mountain High". Honestly don't like it at all.

Kerry Keane, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The following are out as far as I'm concerned:

Communication Breakdown - Percy's voice makes me ill

Makin' Time How does it feel to feel Tighten up Flash Light Hell's Bells Higher and Higher - all because I don't know them

Dan, I'm shocked that the Lord of Dexness has no idea how 1,3,6,7,8,9,11 on your list go.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Redundant" is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE as a reason for de-nomination: thus "Hate Myself for Loving You" is still in. If "silly" is not a reason, then "Rasputin" must also come back in.

(I don't challenge "mullet" as a reason to nix, obviously — otherwise I've have put up Nick Dastoor's namesake Billy Ray Cyrus long ago – tho I do wonder quite what Anthony thinks a mullet is.)

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I'm really surprised too, I thought Dan was a full-on Roxy Music kind of guy.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hot damn, you're right about "Rasputin", Mark, all that Anthony said about it was that it was silly. I don't think there's much doubt that redundancy was meant as a BAD thing, though. So "Rasputin" = IN, "I Hate Myself For Loving You" = OUT.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, wait, never mind, he also says later that "Rasputin" is a cheap novelty song like "Bring The Noise" and that he doesn't want it to be our rep song. "Rasputin" = OUT again. Man, I'm getting out of here.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Redundant' was a response to someone upthread saying "why two JJ records?" But wtf? This is about proposals for a record that everyone likes: how can the existence of another record by the same person affect whether you like the first record (or vice versa)? It has to be denominated for its OWN qualities or lack thereof: not the qualities of OTHER songs. Other I could just say not "Flash Light" because it's too like "Zip Gun Boogie" = redundant.

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with that last point, though not necessarily with the choice of the records themselves.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd forgotten the Rasputin = Bring the Noise judgment. Even tho when I read it I tht THIS IS THE GREATEST CRITICAL ANALYSIS EVER ATTEMPTED. Genius. (ps I'm totally not being sarcastic, even tho it probably sounds like I am...)

mark s, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

some of my veto choices may have already been been nixed:

Don't You Want Me (Human League)

can't remember hearing. VETO.

God Only Knows (Beach Boys)

great.

Souvenirs (OMD)

can't remember hearing. VETO.

Transmission (Joy Division)

can't stand the guy's voice. just kidding. keep it in.

People Get Ready (Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions)

shamefacedly, i can't remember if i've heard this. give me a day to recollect before i say "VETO."

Virginia Plain (Roxy Music)

shame again. i don't think i've heard this. but "third uncle" is ace. and "baby's on fire" is brilliant. too bad roxy gets a VETO for this one.

Be My Baby (Ronettes)

i don't think i know this. i know the "just like honey" drumline is taken right from this and i want to keep it in just for that. look, i'll try to hear this within the next couple of days. Death Disco (Public Image Limited)

classic, of course.

Surf City (Jan & Dean)

doesn't stand out in my mind. VETO.

I'm A Boy (The Who)

don't care about this. VETO.

Higher And Higher (Jackie Wilson) Tighten Up (Archie Bell & The Drells) Ghost Town (The Specials)

don't know these three. VETO.

Communication Breakdown (Led Zeppelin) All The Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople)

both wonderful.

River Deep Mountain High (Ike & Tina Turner) Son Of A Preacher Man (Dusty Springfield) Bang A Gong (T. Rex)

don't know them. VETO.

Radioactivity (Kraftwerk)

keep it in.

I Love Rock and Roll (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts) I Hate Myself For Loving You (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts)) Cannonball (The Breeders)

all good.

Flash Light (Parliament)

sigh. i like what i know of parliament but i don't think i know this. let me see if i can hear it in the next little while.

Gypsies Tramps & Thieves (Cher)

cher is evil. VETO.

Hell's Bells (AC/DC)

good tune.

Adnan's (Orbital)

d/k. VETO.

I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges)

ace.

Alone Again Or (Love)

d/k. VETO.

Israelites (Desmond Dekker)

d/k. VETO.

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams)

i hate country music. VETO.

Mary Mary (Run-DMC)

grade 6 was a good time. leave it in.

Makin' Time (The Creation) How Does It Feel To Feel (The Creation) Baby Come Back (The Equals)

d/k. VETO.

Gimme Some Money (Spinal Tap)

it would be so cool if this was the only remaining song.

sundar subramanian, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually, hold the roxy and t. rex vetos until i see if i can hear them in the next while.

sundar subramanian, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are only 5 songs left. No, wait, I haven't heard "Radioactivity". 4 songs left. I'm off to bed.

Patrick, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I suppose that I'm arriving far too late. For the record my nomination would have been the usually unassailable Nights in White Satin, but of course I'd also have been completely forgetting where I was...

Kim, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm amazed at the ignorance displayed on some of these threads. e.g Never heard Don't you want me - #1 in US and UK, hardly an obscure choice. Presumably due to the lack of public service broadcasting in the US ;-)

Billy Dods, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gimme a break man. i wasn't listening to the top 40 in 1982 or whenever it was that "don't you want me" was number 1. i was 3 years old. have you heard every song that went #1 in the past 20 years? i've probably heard the song on the radio at some point without knowing what it was but i'm not going to vote for it as a song that i like because of that..

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its not a a song you can really ignore even now if you're uk based. I appreciate its probably not the same in Canada though. That period of music sort of '76 to '86 has a big sway over student discos and theme pubs the country over.

Ed, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like Billy Dods, I'm surprised that one could not have heard the track - but unlike him, I think 'ignorance' is OK. It seems good, in a way, that someone (who knows about music, as I think Sundar does) can not have heard this track - a strike against homogenization, if that doesn't sound silly. (It does? Oh.)

Anyway, I have to speak up for 'ignorance' after what Mark S has said about me.

One person's Obvious Knowledge = another person's Obscurity.

the pinefox, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess my surprise isn't that you haven't heard the song, fair enough if you were only 3 when it came out. It's more that you've heard Kraftwerk/Eno/Parliament which i would reckon would be fairly obsucre to a lot of people but missed out on one of the biggest selling songs of that era.

Don't worry, I have huge gaps in knowledge, that's half the fun of discovering new/unheard stuff.

Billy Dods, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BEFORE: "I totally veto the spin-doctored Joan Jett campaign on No-one's Ever Heard Of This Stuff grounds." AFTER: "One person's Obvious Knowledge = another person's Obscurity." HURRAH!! I so win!! I still feel veto on grounds of don't-know- that is dubious when a preponderance of foax voting DO know it. Given the initial thread-call. As a lifestyle choice, Pinefox's Will-to-not-Encounter music he knows he will dislike is OF COURSE as valid and as entertaining (and as instructive) as Tanya's Will-To-Hate all music, and I will indulge and defend it on ANY OTHER THREAD (except when I fink he's obviously just a- havin' us on). But it skews the stats here. Is what I think.

mark s, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S: Sorry, I don't see the contradiction between Before and After. Joan Jett is obvious to you and obscure to me. 'Wild Orphan' is obvious to me, but maybe obscure to you. (I'm not betting on that, though - I appreciate that you're an awesome human encylopedia.)

I'm glad someone occasionally finds my attitude entertaining (and instructive. "Instructive"? WOW!!)

the pinefox, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, based on Patrick C's list, and notwithstanding anti-Pinefox vetos:

-------------------------

I veto the following cos I don’t really like them:

Alone Again Or (Love)

Israelites (Desmond Dekker)

And I’m afraid I have to veto the following cos I don’t know them (could be good, could be not):

Transmission (Joy Division)

Death Disco (Public Image Limited)

Surf City (Jan & Dean)

Higher And Higher (Jackie Wilson)

Tighten Up (Archie Bell & The Drells)

Communication Breakdown (Led Zeppelin)

Bang A Gong (T. Rex)

Radioactivity (Kraftwerk)

I Love Rock and Roll (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts)

I Hate Myself For Loving You (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts))

Flash Light (Parliament)

Gypsies Tramps & Thieves (Cher)

Hell's Bells (AC/DC)

Adnan's (Orbital)

I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges)

Mary Mary (Run-DMC)

Makin' Time (The Creation)

Baby Come Back (The Equals)

Gimme Some Money (Spinal Tap)

-------------------------------

That leaves:

Don't You Want Me (Human League) OK

God Only Knows (Beach Boys) Fabulous

Souvenir[no s?] (OMD) Great

People Get Ready (Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions) Passable

Virginia Plain (Roxy Music) Great - I think

Be My Baby (Ronettes) Pretty great

I'm A Boy (The Who) Dandy

Ghost Town (The Specials) OK for 80s nostalgia etc

All The Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople) Entertaining

River Deep Mountain High (Ike & Tina Turner) I like it, I think

Son Of A Preacher Man (Dusty Springfield) Fine

Cannonball (The Breeders) Ace

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams) But I'm not sure I do know this, actually. I hope I do.

How Does It Feel To Feel (The Creation) Gets through thanks to rubbish but fun Ride cover.

the pinefox, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still feel veto on grounds of don't-know- that is dubious when a preponderance of foax voting DO know it. Given the initial thread-call.

Things needed to be kicked up a notch. The list was full of stuff like "Tighten Up" and "I'm A Boy" that no one was particularly enthusiastic about but that still weren't getting vetoed, 'cause not enough people knew them. So in the end our Winner will truly have unanimous across-the-board wall-to-wall criticism-proof ILM approval. Or something close enough, give me a break :-p

BTW, there are 2 songs left.

Patrick, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and they are?

fritz, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's more that you've heard Kraftwerk/Eno/Parliament which i would reckon would be fairly obsucre to a lot of people but missed out on one of the biggest selling songs of that era.

i generally make an effort to learn more about and thus know more about musics that interest me. (was parliament really that obscure?)

80s dance/pop only gets radio play here on the "80s lunch hour" on the top 40 station. a lot of music from 1976-1986 does still get regular rotation on commercial radio here but it's the aor and hard rock from that time, with a bit of the worst new wave (police, cars, payolas) mixed in. i'm willing to pit my knowledge of '76-'86 hard rock against yours. actually, now that we have a commercial alt- rock station, the cure, depeche mode, new order, and at least one smiths song do get rotation. maybe they play "don't you want me?" too. i couldn't tell you though because i don't know how the song goes.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"you were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you-oo"

Any bells Sundar? It gets played near daily in Toronto.

Kim, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wait, is "bang a gong" the same thing as "get it on?" if so, then i do know it and like it just fine. if not, i haven't heard it yet so i'll say veto. same for "be my baby," "virginia plain," and "people get ready." is anything left?

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, and "flash light" too.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah it was called "bang a gong" in america, i don't know why.

duane, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

because "get it on" means "fuck" but "bang a gong" only means "masturbate". (no i've never heard it used either but someone told me). chorus of that song means "fuck - wank - fuck".

duane, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so that's a good reason to choose it.

duane, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Get It On" was retitled "Bang A Gong" in the US in order to avoid confusion with another "Get It On" (by Chase, I think) which was a hit around that time.

Hey, Sundar just vetoed one of the 2 remaining songs ("Be My Baby"), so we have a winner !

Patrick, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For anyone left wondering now that Patrick's given up revealing useful information, the winner appears to be Mott The Hoople, which I'm forced to veto by not knowing. Hey, it could be worse, but I was out of time for my plan to seek divine retribution on you all by sneaking through "I Don't Want Your Money, Honey. I Want Your Love".

Onto records everyone hates, but it has to be something otherwise acclaimed. Surely no one actually likes "Yesterday"?

Graham, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh no, silly me. He's posted it on another thread

Graham, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ace idea Graham, the follow-up thread. Already 'Yesterday' is a hot favourite. It gets my okay.

Omar, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry - I've been on holiday, but just to let you all know that I don't like All the Young Dudes very much at all, whereas Be My Baby is untouchable. I really don't believe that Sundar hasn't heard it. I mean the Human League I could understand, but Be My Baby? That's just weird. I suggest he rents a copy of Mean Streets - it runs over the title sequence in a supercool way. Woah! Never having heard Be My Baby. I mean, woah! So much fun to come! I feel all paternal.

Joe Proroguin' (Noodle Vague), Friday, 30 August 2019 14:57 (six years ago)

It's pleasant, and I don't have any problem with it, but I wouldn't say it grabs me in an exceptional way yet, as a relative outsider to the genre. I'll give it time.

On one hand, I'm a dancehall stan and I wouldn't necessarily have picked this as a world-uniting crowd-pleaser (Koffee's "Toast" would be a safer bet I'd think?). On the other, I sent this song to a friend after she got harassed by nazis on twitter all day and she said it cheered her up

rob, Friday, 30 August 2019 15:44 (six years ago)

xpost on my third hand, just seeing the word balloon now puts this song in my head

rob, Friday, 30 August 2019 15:45 (six years ago)

"Toast" does a lot more for me on first listen.
