so, irritating college rockers with wonky time signatures and self-conscious obtuseness issues. or, erm, the above, but in a good way?

me? well, i love this eclipse. great mini-lp, perfects the stop-start aesthetic. but its pop, and you can sing along and stuff too. first track off exploded drawing is also ace, but rest of album is mediocre. celebrate the new dark age is supposed to be good but i've never heard it. opinion?

gareth, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I was just going to put up a thread about Mathrock cos what exactly is it? I always think of it like scratchy Gang of Four style punk with odd time signatures like Shellac. But are Polvo mathrock or are they prog rock? I heard "Unexploded drawings" and it was terrible. Irritating college rockers with wonky time signatures is definitely not my bag. Terrible song titles too, "Feather of forgiveness"?

Once again I take my woolly hat off to the obscurity of which you folks are capable. I thought this thread must be about a car or a sweet or something.

I think "wonky" is the perfect word to describe Polvo.

adam, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

God, yes, _Exploded Drawing_ is wretched. Awful. Painful to listen to. Surprisingly so.

Math rock...hmm...someone with more patience than I should address this query. While folks like Slint & Rodan were tagged as "math rock" (if I read my CMJs correctly), it's been attatched to folks that are playing something akin to a tres wanky Gang of Four. Lots of bass noodling. Not very melodic. Plenty of loud / soft dynamics to give you _Nevermind_ flashbacks. (This is stereotypical, mind you.)

I believe Don Caballero are the epitome of "math rock". Their 2nd album was an impenetrable fortress of wacked time-signatures, Black- Sabbath-on-shrooms riffing, and multi-limbed drum soloing. (Their later efforts are, supposedly, better.)

I liked Celebrate the New Dark Age, but it's been a while since I've listened to Polvo. Always liked them, though.

Kerry Keane, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I used to have Cor-Crane Secret and Today's Active Lifestyles and I liked them okay in a sub-Sonic Youth kinda way. Ultimately, they never really left much of an impression on me other than they were okay. So I suppose that says it all.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

lenola used to do a more listenable blend of polvo, not sure if they still do.

keith, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Celebrate the New Dark Age is their masterpiece. No need for anything else! Everything they do feels unnatural and slightly claustrophobic, like sweaty anthropologists playing with some ornate Rock Device they'd unearthed from the Gobi Desert. After Dark Age some jangly out-of-control element was lost. But Cor-Crane Secret I like a lot, as well as Today's Active Lifestyles. They rocked, were great when I saw them at CB's, they knew they were math-y but it's something to laugh about when you're rocking so hard. They tear into themselves and the obscurantist trainspotter tendencies of too-smart "indie rock" at the time in "Every Holy Shroud" -

Celebrate the new dark age with us -
Calculate the irony with someone you can trust.
Feel the holy shroud that keeps us warm -
Show me something round and i'll analyse the form.
Give us something brown that sticks like glue -
I'll recognize the taste and appreciate it too.
This is how it works when we write well -
Let me hear a bomb I'll compare it to a bell.
I don't understand why you don't get it -
I can take the time to insure that you regret it.
We are seeing through your weak designs -
Fellow connoisseurs flip a coin and make a sign

Guitars sounding powerful yet awkward, like an adolescent robot stork.

There was a Polvo record which irritating Humphrey used to play all the time at the Commune in Albany. I have no idea which, but it was one of the few records he had that I liked. (That and Bailterspace. I've found the Bailterspace record in question, but never figured out the Polvo. I bought a Polara record once thinking it was them but it wasn't.) It was quirky, off-kiltre college post-rock, but it was very poppy, hummable post-rock. I wish I knew which record it was. This was about '92 or so. Any guesses?

masonic boom, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Probably Cor-Crane secret, the 1st LP. They were fairly lo-fi in those days, at least compared to the sound they eventually cottoned to.

I finally bought Today's Active Lifestyles about a month ago, having had Time Isn't On My Side stuck in my head for six years. I hadn't heard that song at any point in the interim, and it sounded exactly the same as I had been recalling it.

This is a good thing.

celebrate the new dark age with us? no thanks shitwads. what a fucking awful record. while a FEW of the tunes are bearable most of them suck in that "how can we not sound like sonic youth" trying too hard stop/startery and the singing and the lyrics SHITE it's like they might be giants having a cocaine fuelled mutual wankfest in an english lit lecture on beat poets. today's active lifestyles i liked but it wasn't anything of it's own enough. i remember the tunes but will i ever play the record again? ever?

Anyone ever here Polvo's version of "Mexican Radio" on a Planned Parenthood benefit sampler? The compilation also included such gems as Sonic Youth singing "Ca Plaine Pour Moi" and Chia Pet (a.k.a. the staff of Sassy magazine) doing "Don't You Want Me Baby."

cybele (cybele), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's definitely time to start a fanatical Polvo cult a la Lifter Puller so they could be persuaded to get back together and maybe do a little mini-reunion-tour. Not all their stuff was great, but enough of it was, and besides can you really name one other band that sounds anything remotely like them? (Lenola? WTF? Maybe in terms of production aesthetics, but Lenola are way more shoegazery.) They were one of those bands that had such a unique sound that no matter how wanky/boring they could be at times (I was never able to get all the way through Shapes) they should still be remembered and appreciated.

Three words: Today's. Active. Lifestyles.

My favorite Polvo track was always "Can I Ride" from the Polvo EP. That said, I've never been that big of a Polvo fan. I always liked Unwound better. (not that the two are in any way connected or similar but in my head they are/were)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why the hate for Exploded Drawing? Granted, that's the only one I own (though I've heard Today's Active Lifestyles and Celebrate the New Dark Age) -- but I've always really liked it. (Hearing "Crumbling Down" on college radio is what got me into the band.) What's better about their other stuff?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Exploded Drawing is an easy target for haters because it's longer and more hit-and-miss than other Polvo albums. I appreciate the album's ambitions, but I still prefer the EPs and Today's Active Lifestyles. Also, is it just me or do the guitars on Exploded sound a lot more clipped and metallic than on other albums? I don't think that particular production decision worked well for them.

Yancey: I can understand the Polvo/Unwound connection, since I got into both bands at around the same time. There sure was an awful lot of that kind of indistinct-roar guitar dissonance in the early 90s, wasn't there? Ah, good times.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, that's the connection for me too. But while Polvo records have slowly disappeared from my record collection, there are days (more and more of them) when I would consider Unwound my favorite band ever. (no song does what I want a song to do as well as "Fiction Friction." I mean, holy fuck that song is perfect.)

1. todays active lifestyles (OTM about all songs mentioned so far - lazy comet, my kimono, thermal treasure, but ESPECIALLY time isnt on my side - that synth solo is one of the finest kitchen-sink pop/rock moments i can think of...)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:06 (twenty years ago) link

Well, yeah, but their songs don't sound like Sonic Youth songs at all!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:21 (twenty years ago) link

technique being another story but i can agree at least from the chiming/dissonant open-chording resultant from obscure tunings that are frequent in early polvo/sy records.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

the tunings are similar, but i think polvo's tones might be bassier, and definitely more processed than SY's in a lot of cases.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

Polvo sounds thinner, more twangy, and more metallic to me (as in, like, iron ingots). As if they string up their guitars with banjo strings or something. SY's stuff sounds thicker and more enveloping to me, and more driving. Polvo's guitar sound is probably just cleaner. The odd little curlicues they add sound like just that, ephemera, rather than being magnified into huge shardwaves of distortion by pedals.

x-post haha see I think polvo is the ultimate treble band!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago) link

both guitarists definitely had two very different styles of attack. ash was definitely more of the "out"/eastern influence where as dave was the more pop/rock of the two.

they definitely used cheaper guitars then sonic youth which explains some of the variance in tones. i'm just explaining that tunings played a pretty significant factor in their "sound" which was largely a sonic youth influence.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

Peter-- Erectus Monotone is a must for any 90's indie guitar squall nostalgia trip. Think Brainiac but less sleazy and more spazzy/hyper (but still poppy).

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:50 (twenty years ago) link

POLVOBOTIC
I must admit that, while they are somewhat directly inspired by Polvo, I always prefered Mars Accelerator to Polvo. While kings and queens of "thee drone ruck" era have always bragged about how many effects pedals they can use per song, Mars Accelerator humbly succeeded in using a humongous array of pedals per note. It is no surprise that Bobby, the leader of the Mars Accelerator band, is a software programmer himself. The roboticly processed Polvo-esque sounds are just gorgeous most of the time, whereas Polvo are gorgeous in moments. I certainly do not mind Polvo at all, but I've found that, in this rare case, I love the copycats more.

their new record came out a week or so ago and i know they're touring rather soon.

this is what dave says about the band in a fakejazz interview:

http://www.fakejazz.com/fake/archives/2005/04/ncaa_basketball.php

"Black Taj is Grant Tennille from the Idyll Swords, my friend and Inexperience drummer Thomas Atherton, and Steve Popson, who was in Polvo with me, on bass. The record is going to have a few different recording sessions on it. The earliest was from 2002, which we did at Trans Am's studio - NRS - in D.C. Ash Bowie and Brian Quast did a session in Raleigh this year with Brian Walsby on drums. Jerry Kee did a recent session as well. I think we are going to go back to Quanic in Raleigh and get Ash and Brian to re-record a couple of songs this summer. We'll cull the "best" from all those sessions for the album."

One of my favorite 90s bands. Lived in Chapel Hill, NC, so saw 'em a couple times before I ever heard a record (Cor-Crane was already out, so I didn't have to wait long). Great live show. Lot of folks back then weren't happy w/ Cor-Crane, but I think its best songs are as good as anything that came after. Esp. "Can I Ride" and "Channel Changer". Celebrate the New Dark Age and Today's Active Lifestyles are great from front to back though. For whatever reason, I lost interest after that. As far as I'm concerned, a random mix of songs off the first three = the only "Greatest Hits" that matters.

Still, a well-selected retrospective of some kind might do well, and god knows, they deserve it.

Garrett (since you're in BOS too) or anyone who's seen them recently: is Ash singing different lyrics for the verses in "Feather of Forgiveness?" Obviously it was hard to hear but the syllables I could pick out sounded way different. Weird 'cause all the lyrics on that song are cool.

Yeah this is a dorky obscuro question but whatever.

it's kind of an odd beast, this song. It's unexpectedly heavy, and has a lot of nods to classic rock; it certainly doesn't sound like anything off my favorite Polvo album, Celebrate the New Dark Age. But it's pretty good nonetheless.

Jesus Christ, Chiropractor at Law (res), Friday, 19 June 2009 19:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Love the serpentine guitar thing that fades in and out of the mix. Is that a sample or what? Echoplex?

Enemy Insects (NickB), Friday, 19 June 2009 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Shapes had a lot of nods to classic rock, which in 1997 was not cool to most folks. So, bad reception. In my mind, though, it holds up extremely well and was a pinnacle of songwriting for the band. Less "cool changes" for the sake of throwing some cool changes in the songs, but still usual great Polvo shit going on. I don't know, I like all of their albums, so it was nice seeing them trot out some new shit. Then of course they were gone. Can't wait to here this new record, seems like it is just going to pick up where they left off. Side note: last show I saw of theirs was with Trans Am. Trans Am closed there set with an AMAZING Led Zeppeling medley (medleys, when done well, are so good live) and Polvo played a Hendrix song (Stoned Free, I think, not a great Hendrix jam but still). Pretty much bummed out all of the Philly dudes I was with who thought Polvo sucked after Cor-Crane Secret. Weird. I couldn't get enough.

It was a good show, but the crowd was weird. Dave made fun of Philly for getting rid of Jerry Stackhouse, and the room sat in silence. No one got into the show, it was the days of crossed arms and zero expressions of enthusiasm (for the most part). Then when the classic rock came out ........ Well, I was excited.

does it sound like anything else in their back catalog? I'm a little curious now and am wondering where to go. but I may just wait for the new one.

original bgm, Friday, 19 June 2009 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

it could possibly be a song off of exploded drawing.

but there's a linearity and groove to the track (even though there are like four movements in its five minutes) that set it apart from earlier polvo stuff. they never grooved like this. the drummer knows what he is doing.

there's this repeating guitar loop that totally gets crushed by this syncopated riff, and the drummer just drives it all along. there aren't much vocals in the track, but ash sounds really on. then there's cock-rock solo and coda.

cutty, Friday, 19 June 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

not only restraint w/r/t rockin-hard but also to melody. polvo's melodic vagueness is something of a virtue as well.

?? i don't understand this at all. older polvo (i.e. celebrate the new dark age) rocked VERY VERY hard.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 09:42 (fifteen years ago) link

it did, this is very true. it's not a matter of "rocking hard" it's the GROOVE. the old drummer did not groove. he skittered around the guitars frenetically.

cutty, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 12:01 (fifteen years ago) link

In my mind one of the truly great things about Polvo as well is that they are constantly "going for it" in very restrained ways. In most of their songs the guitars are constantly adding slight variations to the riffs and parts of the songs, coming off as slightly improvisatory but within the framework of the song. Of course they wrote songs with lots of parts the "took you on a journey," so to speak, but even within that the songs were constantly shifting and mixing it up instead of just focussing on perfection or being super super tight. It is something that I wish more bands picked up on.

Dr. Phil, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, I am still excited that they are back together and I am still imagining that the new record will have some great shit on it, but I have listened to "Beggar's Bowl" a few times now and I am just not feeling it much. I like some of the short little transitional guitar bits that come in the pauses of the song, but the main riffs and parts are just not doing it for me. I was really kinda bummed out cause I have truly liked everything they have ever done, for the most part, and I don't know, it just feels off to me. Too slick? I mean, Shapes had slick bits, but it never sounded like something that would make sense on a "Modern Rock Radio" station. Hmm, maybe I am being too critical, but it just seems overcooked to me. Perhaps pretty great live, minus all of the reverb and studio shit going on.

Surprised no one else seemed to get a similar feel from it. Makes me hope that it's just me being an ass and that the record really will be great.

yes, you are an ass

cutty, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

xp what you are describing is what's cool about it--like after 12 years i wouldn't want them to come back with just a polvo record (i mean that would be fine but beggar's bowl makes it clear that they had no intention of halfassing this). it sounds like they took the core of their sound and expanded upon it, which is awesome imo.

wishes to be referred under the pseudonym of kronos (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmmm, being an ass and am an ass conversation ... Look, I don't want them to just come back with another Polvo record either. I did mention that I loved Shapes, did I not, which most Polvo fans did not at the time. You know, I am listening to it right now, and the breakdowns and little insertions in the pauses are cool, but the main riff and bass tone and even some of the guitar tones are just kinda lame sounding. I was legitimately surprised, as I can honestly never remember thinking this about a Polvo song. I don't hear just an update to their sound, I hear some kind of bad studio ideas making their way into the sound kinda stuff going on, and it legitimately makes me wonder about the upcoming record. I hope I am wrong.

grandavis, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I want to add that in the context of a whole record "Beggar's Bowl" may sound quite a bit different to me, but as a standalone track right now I am having trouble getting into it. Gotta say that, as noted, the playing on the song is pretty amazing, super-tight for sure. It really is just the sound and parts of the arrangement that aren't doing it for me, but I will shut up as there is no way to reconcile it until the record comes out. I am still hoping that it will be a great record.

more or less half quiet post rock songs - sounds kinda like sonic youth' Murray Street influenced,
and half more catchy-straightforward-loud-math-rock songs that continue the 90's Polvo/albini tradition.

overall it sounds like an enjoyable, satisfying record, nothing new but thats not what's expected from them. nice continuation of their 90's stuff - like those 10 years or so were just an illusion- they picked up exactly where they stopped,
with the same guitar tuning and all the other polvo schticks.

bull u squirel (jdchurchill), Tuesday, 1 September 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

so after spending a couple days with this i think i'm mostly struck by how pretty a lot of it is...like instead of consciously subverting and fucking up every riff they realized it's more effective to do that 75% of the time and it makes the other 25% sound even better.

i'll admit on the second half i kind of wanted them to just play something really abrasive and old-polvo but that obviously was not the goal--this record is a little moodier, a little lower-key.

the first half pretty much kills tho.

I think this will make me warmer to the record, actually.

I've never heard of Polvo before this new disc, and I hate the term math-rock (makes me think of prog, I guess). But I'm digging the jagged guitar sound on the eMusic soundscans.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 11 September 2009 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it's a bad term and it doesn't apply to polvo any more than it does to like, sonic youth or something.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 11 September 2009 14:56 (fifteen years ago) link

if you didn't listen to math rock in the 90s, you obviously won't understand what it was supposed to mean. it's not that hard to grasp, and it is instantly identifiable.

cutty, Friday, 11 September 2009 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i would agree that there is a particular type of 90s indie rock band that could be grouped together--i think the issue is more the term "math rock" being used for that group.

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 September 2009 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

It was invented by a friend of ours as a derogatory term for a band me and James (Lo) played in called Wider. But his whole joke is that he'd watch the song and not react at all, and then take out his calculator to figure out how good the song was. So he'd call it math rock, and it was a total diss, as it should be.

Mr. Que, Friday, 11 September 2009 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

the only acceptable use of it, for me, involves a calculator.

Mr. Que, Friday, 11 September 2009 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Indeed:

Math rock is a rhythmically complex, guitar-based style of experimental rock music that emerged in the late 1980s. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords.

back in the 90's whenever someone brought up the term it would remind me of a tic a lot of the "math rock" drummers seemed to have (which i always assumed was copped from slint) hitting just the bell of a crash cymbal in an odd place in a song, like once or twice. it's sort of hard to explain

Mr. Que, Friday, 11 September 2009 15:32 (fifteen years ago) link

sheesh! i cannot believe the seething rage with which i dismissed polvo & particularly "celebrate.." way upthread. i think that was more to do with the powerlessness of having no money and sleeping on people's floors ages back roundabout that time. somewhere along the line i turned into a raging polvo fanatic and "today's active lifestyles" is one of my favourites lps ever, and oh yes i am stoked about in prism which i did not know about until i read this thread today.

Poll-vo

(I want more people to vote on my thread)

Evan, Friday, 18 September 2009 02:13 (fifteen years ago) link

seven months pass...

Here you go Evan, you may appreciate me backing up a threat I made ealier in this or your Poll-vo thread, can't remember, but I was kinda bummed out after hearing "Beggar's Bowl" but said I would check in after hearing the whole record.

Well, here goes. I fucking loved and love it, definitely one of my favorite records from last year, but that's not really fair. I am a huge Polvo fan, so I didn't have much doubt that they would fail me for a whole record.

I still stand by my criticism of "Beggar's Bowl", which is that it does seem a little forced to me and doesn't suit the band that well, despite the fact that it obviously "kicks ass". I chalk it up to a band taking a long hiatus, getting back together, adding a decidedly groovy new drummer, being better at their instruments, and then geting in a room together. If I had to bet money on it, I might hazard a wager that "Beggar's Bowl" was the first thing they wrote once back together. Kinda total explosion of renewed energy and enthusiasm pouring into a supreme rocker, but perhaps the excitement of "holy shit, we fucking DO still rock" maybe overriding Polvo's usual, dare I say it, refined taste? Whatever, I can see why people like it, but it is definitely my least favorite song on the album, with "The Pedlar" coming in secong. Enough with the negative.

The rest is total guitar righteousnous, along with some really cool songwriting and a palpable feel to the whole record. Honestly the two previous songs I mentioned ruin the feel for me a little, which is perhaps what some like but hurts the album as a whole for me a little. There are so many good moments on the record, little parts that come up once a song then are gone that totally make it a great listen front to back. This, to me, is a real album, and definitely benefits from listening all the way through. I certainly like Beggar's Bowl a lot better as a moment on the record, as I can just enjoy the parts of the song I like knowing there is more to come. As a single, eh.

Already a long post which is probably of little value to anyone, but if there is one thing I would like to leave anyone who gets through this with, it is:
STEVE POPSON!
I always loved Steve's playing, and feel he is often a little overlooked, but fuck, he kicks ass all over this record. As Mike Watt would say: BASS!

grandavis, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 17:25 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i noticed on the faster polvo songs of my favorite era (basically the merge years), popson was the dude nailing down the "melody" which freed up ash and dave to just skroink all over the place.

still haven't heard this but was disappointed with the last few of their efforts so i'm kinda at peace with that.

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, a lot of people seemed to have gotten off the boat with Exploded and Shapes, which as I've stated I am fully on board with and feel have aged really well. Popson just has great ideas as a bass player, he is a totally integral part of the band, which I always appreciate. He, like the other dudes, seems to always be kinda going for it in lots of non-obvious ways while still staying within the song. This is a really hard thing to do well.

If you didn't like Shapes or Exploded Drawing I am not sure the new one will do much for you, though I must say that to me it is its own beast in the Polvo universe. It is way more classic rock than Shapes even, but not, again, in an overly obvious way. Simply, it is a gracefully older-sounding album from older dudes, which makes a lot of sense coming from the band at this point in time. It certainly does not come across as an attempt at relevancy or redemption or something, thankfully, at least to me, just a really great return. Some of the playing is, of course, truly truly great. The guitars at times are just so fucking cool, which for me is often enough of a reason to get excited about any record.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

Polvo songs/records are so full of hooks, they are just super-odd ones, which makes them (for me at least) just endlessly worth returning to. I really hope that they make another record, I loved "In Prism" and would gladly have more in the same vein.

That "Vibracobra" is awesome. I loved the original version of "Can I Ride" as well with the extended ending:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA9LPMOqpCc

grandavis, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

Hah xpost, I am a huge fan, so there is not really a Polvo song I do not like. Way better than 1:5 for me. Possibly the inverse, i.e., 5:1.

grandavis, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

Also, I guess "Can I Ride" on Cor-Crane has an extended ending too, just a different, less anthemic one. Not sure why they ditched, unless it was to cut the record down in length a bit.

grandavis, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:07 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I'm at a stage where I can put on just about any Polvo and I'll be content, amazing how that sound feels as rich to me now as it ever did. Take a record like Celebrate The New Dark Age though and that is 7 out of 7 solid tunes.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

Agreed on "Celebrate". That record, and Drive Like Jehu's "Yank Crime", changed my life legitimately (I got them both at the same time pretty much and saw each band live on those tours) and still provide really rich and rewarding listening sessions after whatever listens I am on with them (well well into the hundreds and possibly thousands at this point).

Also love this Peel Session from 1992, which is certainly not the band at the peak of their powers, but there is just something about their early days that hits a sweet spot for me. Especially "Treaed On Me", though for some reason them jamming on Gary Numan's "Cars" is both goofy and great at the same time:

"Tread", cannot type or spell these days.

grandavis, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

They indeed have a new album in the works.

I love everything they did, though "shapes" still weirdos me out. My girlfriend got me "today's active lifestyles" on vinyl (orig merge)!! That s/t EP is the holy grail at this point.

Evan, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

"Celebrate" seems to be the most consistent for me. I like almost all the songs on that one, but for some reason I only like 3-4 tracks on TAL.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

More forward momentum in the compositions overall on celebrate, I think.

Evan, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:42 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for confirming there's a new record planned Evan, great news (I had heard something that led me to believe it as well, but didn't want to get my hopes up). I love "Shapes", though it is a really weird record, it is heavy and kind of scary sounding at times, like stuff was maybe not going so well in Polvo-land (which of course they broke up for a while after that record so ....) There are some amazing songs on that record though, and the guitar playing had gone into some new territories, which were taken even further on "In Prism". My friend rejected it from his college radio station at the time for being too "classic rock", which is not really that far from the truth. They did a Led Zeppelin medley and covered Hendrix when I saw them on that tour, which the Philadelphia crowd at the time did not seem too pleased by, but I fucking loved it.

I only own the s/t on CD, really don't have many of the albums on vinyl cause I bought everything I could when CDs were king (i.e., I was 19-23 and dumb, except not dumb for listening to as much Polvo as I could).

grandavis, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

"Celebrate" is the most concise statement by them (as an EP obvioulsy), but it did not sacrifice any of the range they displayed as a band. I love "This Eclipse" as well, but it is just not as jam-packed with "events" like "Celebrate" is, it's a lot more relaxed and expansive for an EP. What a run though, those two EPs into "Exploded Drawing" was a hell of a fertile creative period.

Also "Solitary Set" is absolutely one of my favorite things in the world.

grandavis, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

Talking about Polvo's classic rock propensities, I've only just got round to listening to Black Taj (both albums up on Spotify, Idyll Swords on there too) and that is very much in that vein. Definitely an extension of what Polvo were doing on Shapes, really nice stuff.

Merge just posted first song "Total Immersion" from the upcoming album. Has that early "swarm of bees" tone on one of the guitars (which is why the Merge description for the record is throwing out "Today's Active Lifestyles" as a comparison I imagine) and a really cool outro. Definitely like it a lot better than the lead song on the last album (I loved the last album, just not "Beggar's Bowl" so much).

Hah, I have wanted to make music like this with people for a long time. Hard to find folks who can do it though ....

It all starts with a good tuning or two.

grandavis, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

one time this dude in a band who played a show with my old band told us we sounded like polvo and i couldve kissed him

69, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 18:19 (eleven years ago) link

Cool, would love to have gotten that compliment! You should start a band with Evan.

grandavis, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

We could all start a band. You guys move here- fair?

Evan, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

Hah, only a couple of years ago I worked in Hoboken and lived in NYC, but I am in Virginia now. As Polvo is a southern band I think everyone has to move here ....

grandavis, Thursday, 8 August 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

Aw man, a real life reverse commuter. Well darn. I used to manage the record store Tunes in Hoboken. One time I was playing the new Polvo in the store and some dude was so into it and had never heard of them. He ended up buying it all excited "this is totally my thing, isn't it?! [directed at his girlfriend/wife]" It made my day.

Too bad you moved out. I live super close to the PATH.

Evan, Thursday, 8 August 2013 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

Man, I worked like two blocks from the PATH station, we could've had Polvo sessions whenever. The real commuters hated me btw, couldn't handle someone heading against the stream. But yeah, my wife finished grad school and we decided to mave back south. That's cool that you turned someone onto Polvo via the new record, still feel like that record got slept on a bit.

Odd "worlds colliding" set of facts: a guy I went to high school with randomly ended up being a colleague at the company I got a job with in Hoboken. A long time ago I noticed that the photo credit for the shot on the back of "Shapes" was credited to someone with the same name as the guy I went to high school with, and so when we went out to lunch to catch up (in Hoboken) I finally got a chance to ask him about it (he had lived in Chapel Hill at one point in his life). Turns out it was definitely his photo, and the reason it was used for the record was because he had lived with Dave Brylawski! Wild. He gave me a really cool Celebrate the New Dark Age tour poster he had sitting around, cause he didn't know any other Polvo fans.

grandavis, Thursday, 8 August 2013 18:38 (eleven years ago) link

And it would have blown my mind if I ran into a guy I went to high school with that simply heard of Polvo! That is pretty wild.

BTW you should have come up for at least one of the nights during the last run of Maxwells shows!

Evan, Thursday, 8 August 2013 19:32 (eleven years ago) link

Was not in the cards unfortunately. Not so easy for me to wing it on up to NYC/Hoboken these days. My favorite part of working there was running into Steve Shelley on my way to the PATH. I always gave him a big thumbs up, cause I love that guy (I ran into Thurston a bunch of times on the Lower East Side as well, which is funny, cause I had very few celebrity run-ins in New York, but Sonic Youth is pretty much my favorite band and I ran into those two a bunch).

It was definitely cool that an old friend of mine was buddies with someone in one Polvo, but generally I didn't know anyone else into Polvo at all until they were broken up for the first time, only met them later in life.

grandavis, Thursday, 8 August 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah! Steve used to come in to buy buzzcocks reissues and another time I saw him at taco truck. Mysteriously absent at all the end of maxwells events...

Evan, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

Steve is such a nice guy, and pretty busy. Maybe he was recording or rehearsing for a tour or something. Is he not in the current version of Lee Ranaldo's band, which I think did play one of the last Maxwells shows?

grandavis, Friday, 9 August 2013 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Oops, forgot to respond here! I'm not sure if he is, but they did indeed play one of the last Maxwells shows. I didn't go to that one though, despite going over and over right up to the end. Funny because I kept buying tickets to them but since I've worked the door often and knew so many people there personally I got stamped in to each show immediately. Turns out I could have gone to that one too!

grandavis, Monday, 23 September 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

It's... so easy-going compared to all the rest. I'm loving it!! Just ordered it.

I've ordered way too many records... after a lull there are just so many nice new records and reissues that have been coming out.

Evan, Monday, 23 September 2013 20:24 (eleven years ago) link

rules

adam, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

Fuck yeah

Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, my first time through and I definitely dig it. First impression for me is that it is less easy-going than "In Prism", but I have to listen to both to see if I really think that. Seems to have more of the old Polvo knottiness and anti-hooks as hooks than the last record (though by no means is it a vast return to Today's Active Lifestyles or anything) whilst still retaining some of that new-found grooviness. Some surprises too: acoustic guitar on "Ancient Grains" (and background vocals like I can't recall hearing from them for quite some time), keyboards (some of which were cool some half-baked), and some really tight proggy bits. A lot of good playing all over the record basically.

grandavis, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah maybe easy-going was the wrong way to put it. Maybe I was looking for "fluid"? Also I love all the crazy sound effects they're playing with throughout. Sounds like they had fun.

Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 19:03 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, this sounds like a band fully enjoying being a band for sure. It is definitely confident/fluid, but to me less loping/laid back than the last one. A good follow-up for sure, and I bet these songs are good live.

grandavis, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

I used to love their first two records in high school and stopped listening after Celebrate the New Dark Age. I saw them in Houston with Unwound at Numbers and it was a awesome show, I was 19. It's funny cause I just put them on my ipod last week to listen to while driving around looking for records. I had no idea they released a new album, I'll have to check it out.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

Both new ones are very good! Some people were put-off by the more muscular/alt-rock moments on the last one. I certainly didn't mind/interpret them as embarrassments.

Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

Hah that was mainly me Evan, and just for the song "Beggar's Bowl", which I hope I didn't suggest was too embarassing. I actually think it does what it does very well, it is just not "my" Polvo. The rest of "In Prism" I sincerely love however, and that song comes across better in context than as the first song available from the record (for me at least). Really it is astounding how good both of these records are, so happy they are active again.

grandavis, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

Ah! Though I'm sure you weren't alone in that beyond this board at least.

I wonder if these guys get studio musician work. Everything they do just seems to be so not-standard and in the most expert way possible.

Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:19 (eleven years ago) link

Oh! Another album!

Their first album is probably my favourite, but Today's Active Lifestyles has one of my favourite songs -- "My Kimono".

It's been a while, though.

adam, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

They were my favorite band was I was 16. Not so much these days.

Siberia is way better their previous reunion album, but it still sounds like a bunch of older guys covering unreleased Polvo songs.

TetrisAttack, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 23:16 (eleven years ago) link

That's because the upbeat songs are great chase scene music!

The hippy was gone before the lights came on

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

I actually thought "Beggar's Bowl" went in the direction I always wanted them to go in. Never felt like they rocked hard enough. Even at their most rocking in the past, like "Fractured Like Chandeliers" or "Every Holy Shroud", it never quite KICKED ASS like "Beggar's Bowl." Does the new album rectify this?

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

Uhh, it's definitely propulsive, but it's not necessarily the surprise potential alt-rock hit direction that Beggar's Bowl was. It is fantastic, though!

Evan, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

Also I don't know I think they've definitely rocked just as hard or harder on Cor-Crane Secret at least.

new record sounds fine but i wish the sound was dirtier, like it was back in the 90's..

Could be dirtier, but I expected some conservatism. Same with the last one.

Weird, this old band of John Dwyer (Ohsees, Coachwhips, Pink and Brown, etc.) and Brian Gibson (Lightning Bolt) sounds exactly like early Polvo, I mean guitar moves completely copped from the S/T and Cor-crane albums. Pretty fun to listen to actually, minus a little throwaway action here and there:

I mean, in 1997 I was in the exact same headspace as these dudes.

Crazy, he (and Ash I think?) was a chef at 411 West on Franklin Street wayyyyy back in the day when Chapel Hill was one of the coolest places on the planet.

His son said on FB that it was completely unexpected, passing in his sleep.

From what I know of him over the past 20 years, he was a hard working family man who loved his wife and children more than anything.

I mean, I listened to a lot of Bowie and Prince in my life, but I've probably listened to more of Polvo.

What a very nice, sweet gentleman... who also was a ferocious drummer for the first 6 years of that crazy band.
