Because I've been listening to a lot of Kinks...these seem a little obvious:

Picture Book
Waterloo Sunset
Alcohol
Dandy
Till the End of the Day
Animal Farm
Rosie Won't You Please Come Home
Sunny Afternoon
You Really Got Me
Nothing In This World Can Stop Me Worrin' Bout That Girl

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

May or may not do this one myself, but just gotta say, "Till the End of the Day" is a great choice and an all-too-rarely-mentioned track. Nothing says "1965" better than that song (even though I suspect it might be from '64, I dunno). The last one's great, too, thanks (for me) to its use in Rushmore.

Oooh, I forgot about Love Me Till the Sun Shines. And then there are Kinks covers...

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I have fond memories of wandering, on scorching summer days, from the Library of Congress to the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. while listening to Face to Face and Kinks Kontroversy on headphones.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe Sterling didn't pick "Mighty Mouth" over all of his picks. I need to listen to the Kinks more these days. I'm glad this band came up.

Picture Book
Where Have All The Good Times Gone?
Rosie, Won't You Please Come Home
I'm Not Like Everybody Else
Big Sky
Wicked Annabella

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, I forgot Days. That would be my no. 10.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

OK. Here is my list. A typical singles band that did yet release at least two really classic albums with a lot of classy album tracks on them:

6. Village Green
7. Dedicated Follower Of Fashion

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
I don't think my list will have much correspondance with my actual feelings on the subject, since I think most of their songs are equally wonderful, but I'll give it a try, in roughly chronological order:

"Tired of Waiting for You"
"Dead End Street"
"Mr. Pleasant"
"Sunny Afternoon"
"Waterloo Sunset"
"Autumn Almanac"
"Susannah's Still Alive" (I had to include one Dave Davies song)
"Big Sky"
"Victoria" (although I sort of prefer the version on The Storyteller)
"Shangri-La"

plus "Rock & Roll Fantasy" (Seventies Kinks doesn't deserve to be part of my top 10)

This leaves off lots of stuff that I derive immense pleasure/catharis from listening to (e.g. "Holiday in Waikiki", "Big Black Smoke", "See My Friends", "Death of a Clown") as well as stuff that I thought was great at one time but have simply heard too many times to enjoy as much anymore (e.g. "Lola", "You Really Got Me", "All Day and All of the Night", "Apeman"), so it's pretty much worthless, but it's a list.

Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Sitting by the Riverside
Australia
Lola
Autumn Almanac
Death of a Clown
Dead End Street
Sunny Afternoon (oh, obvious choice I know, but i find it great!)
Dedicated Follower of Fashion (one of the songs I got into in my first flush of interest in pop music in 1993-4)
Victoria
Days

I really need to listen to the albums more; when at home I'll have access to "Village Green", "Percy" and "Arthur" at least. Sounds like "Face to Face" and "Something Else" are very much worth checking out...?

Tom May (Tom May), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ten songs? Bloody hell, this will be tough.

Look, how about I do ten songs from the 60s then ten songs from after the 60s? How about that?

OK, 60s list.

People take pictures of each other
Love me 'til the sun shines
Shangri-la
This is where I belong
Animal farm
Mindless child of motherhood
I need you
Too much on my mind
Big sky
Do you remember Walter?

(Yes I do like "Village Green". A lot)

70s onwards list

No more looking back
A long way from home
Oklahoma USA
A face in the crowd
Scattered
Only a dream
Full moon
Good day
Get back in line
20th Century Man

(Hmm, that was a struggle)

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like "Face to Face" and "Something Else" are very much worth checking out...?

Yes, very much so, IMO.

Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

And so is "Village Green Preservation Society" as well.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll change my answer to the tracklist of Kinks Rare, just for the heck of it:

Act Nice and Gentle
This Man He Weeps Tonight
Mr. Pleasant
King Kong
Creeping Jean
Plastic Man
Lincoln County
Polly
Mindness Child of Motherhood
She's Got Everything
Berkeley Mews
Hold My Hand
There Is No Life Without Love

Listening to this compilation just now has convinced me of the utter folly of trying to pick only ten Kinks songs...

Chris F. (servoret), Thursday, 27 November 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That is a class compilation! All it needs is "This is where I belong" somewhere in it...

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 27 November 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who wonders where T-Rex got their 'glam' era sound from have a listen to King Kong!

Shit this is hard. I had to chop all of Muswell Hillbillies because no single track stands out.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 9 November 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

I tried and failed, but I know that King Kong, Australia, Wicked Annabella and Shangri-La would be on there. As for the rest, too many options.

thanks for the recommendation, I was always afraid of "Soap Opera" but I can probably find it for a couple of bucks.

The more I play it, the more I realize how hysterically funny (on purpose) it is.

dlp9001, Saturday, 16 October 2010 03:19 (fifteen years ago)

"Where Have All the Good Times Gone?"
"Too Much on My Mind"
"Tired of Waiting for You"
"Nothin' in the World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl"
"Love Me Till the Sun Shines"
"See My Friends"
"Lola"
"Afternoon Tea"
"Stop Your Sobbing"
"Party Line"

More or less in order...Amazing top 10, but I'd still rank them behind the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Who (I know it's not all that unusual to argue otherwise). Ditto what swoods wrote way upthread re Rushmore.

I have to admit I have little interest in most Kinks material from after the "Arthur" album. Yep, already on "Lola Vs. Powerman...." I felt they were starting to lose it a bit.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

At this point, seems like they took a dip after TKATVGPS, then rebounded for Preservation through Schoolboys, then tanked again until Low Budget. But I keep extending thier glory period. Maybe eventually it'll contain every album they did.

Schoolboys took me the longest to love, but seriously it's insanely great. If you stop listening to the 50's doo-wop stuff before RD starts to fuck with it, you'll never know...

Those songs just don't sound like The Kinks to me. They sound like some American rock band with Ray Davies on vocals. Long gone is archetypically English kitchen sink music hall approach that was musically typical of their 1965-69 style.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Friday, 12 November 2010 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

Lazy Old Sun is one of my favourite Kinks songs. Have a soft spot for Harry Rag too. Apeman is an all-time favourite song too, depsite slightly quasi-racist undertones.

Jon Savage's authorized bio is passable. Sadly, it's by far the best Kinks book. Mendelsohn's is an embarrassing mess, Ray's autobio is scattershot, and Mojo was otm on Dave's autobio, calling it "the best justification for a ghost writer ever published."

Shart Week (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 16 August 2013 04:02 (twelve years ago)

If you want the day-by-day thing, there's "The Kinks All Day and All of the Night" by Doug Hinman. Useful as bathroom reading and for trivia, if nothing else.

weird that there's no general Kinks thread

the inscrutability of Ray's politics are a continual source of fascination for me. His writing is so great and so character-driven you get all these fully realized POVs without Ray ever giving away the game as to where his sympathies actually lie.

i finally bought—and listened to—"everybody’s in showbiz." this seems pretty transparently to be the point where the kinks, or at least ray davies, jumps the shark. i mean, there are a few decent songs on the album, and some decent (even a tiny few wonderful) songs on later records. but it’s hard to get past the hit from this album, "celluloid heroes." it’s so incoherent, so insipid, so poorly-thought-out it’s shocking. it would seem like blatant pandering if some of the /tones/ didn’t so obviously evolve (if that’s the word) out of the nostalgic/lightly ironic worldview davies had been cultivating for years. but if it’s not the nadir of that tendency then i don’t want to know what is. is someone going to tell me that the idiocy of this song is somehow intentional, that it’s a "character" song in which davies is depicting a dumb guy whose attitudes toward celebrity and hollywood are a bundle of self-contradicting clichés?

(granted the verses have a kind of asinine earworm quality but even musically this is light years from the kinks’ best work.)

wizzz! (amateurist), Monday, 13 June 2016 20:32 (nine years ago)

I'm not sure I'd say "jumps the shark" when they're just about to release four (or maybe more) amazing albums in a row. The version with all the synthesizer stuff on the 1980 live album is miles better than the one here. It's a catchy song based on a kind of overly clever premise, but not really the end of the world. His protégé Claire Hamill had a version that is just horrible (and I generally love her) and a comparison between that and the Kinks' "One For The Road" version shows where the Kinks' strengths were.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:17 (nine years ago)

what is clever about it?

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 14 June 2016 22:05 (nine years ago)

I think we agree. "Overly clever" isn't a compliment, and clever would have been in italics if I knew how to do it.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 15 June 2016 00:54 (nine years ago)

Anyway, I heard this version first, and have always liked it much more than the earlier one.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 15 June 2016 00:57 (nine years ago)

was it a big hit in the US? I don't feel like it's very well-known here in Britain.

"Celluloid Heroes" was released the same month as Dory Previn's Mary C. Brown and the Hollywood Sign LP, putting the two side by side is not a comparison that flatters the former. I wonder if Davies had heard "Mary C. Brown and the Hollywood Sign" (the song), and if that influenced him when he wrote "Celluloid Heroes"?

I love 70s concept album era Kinks in general, though. wasn't Bobcat Goldthwaite supposed to be directing a Schoolboys in Disgrace movie a few years ago? did anything ever come of that?

Yes, "Everybody's in Showbiz" is not very good. I quite like "Sitting in My Hotel", even though it's self-pitying rockstar bollocks.

I like "Celluloid Heroes" though!

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 June 2016 11:45 (nine years ago)

he could be so corny in his tone and his phrasing when he wanted to, and he often did want to. there are moments in that live version of "celluloid heroes" ("don't step on bela lugosi/because he's liable to turn and bite) where i could swear i'm listening to adam sandler.

at its heart, "celluloid heroes" is the overdone, underthought american version of "the village green preservation society."

Yes, I'd never heard this song until I heard this album, and then it was a relief to hear a memorable tune having had to sit through the likes of "Hot Potatoes".

Ray attempted suicide shortly after the release of this record when his wife left with the kids. I don't think the Kinks were ever the same without Rasa and it took Ray about 10 years to return to form (abandoning their awkward stadium rock period), writing about his sister's generation and nostalgia for the Fortis Green/Muswell Hill/North London of his youth.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Sunday, 17 November 2019 14:41 (six years ago)

I had a dream that I was walking around at night in a foreign city (it might have been Montreal I'm not sure) when I heard coming out of a corner bar the sound of a throng singing along to "Autumn Almanac". I had to check that out. By the time I could make my way in through the crowd "Set Me Free" had begun to play with everyone in the place singing their lungs out. There were no karaoke screens or anything showing lyrics. All the people evidently just knew them, although many were surprisingly young. Some were standing, some sitting on stacked beer cases, most were holding a beer and couldn't have looked happier to be there.

I asked the bartender what was going on. (By then "So Mystifying" was blasting away.) He told me the bar was an all Kinks all the timesingalong. It had started a few years before with a general oldies format on Mondays only. Soon everyone was requesting more Kinks and less Beatles, less Motown, etc. Then nothing but Kinks. Then Tuesdays were added and eventually every day of the week.

Anyway, he counted down for me the bar's Top 10 most popular singalongs:

10. Dead End Street
9. Too Much on My Mind
8. Afternoon Tea
7. Something Better Beginning
6. Victoria
5. Where Have All the Good Times Gone?
4. Sunny Afternoon
3. Lola

The Kinks

announce The Journey,

a two-part special anniversary anthology release

The Journey - Part 1

2CD, 2LP, Digital & HD Digital

Worldwide release March 24th, 2023

The Kinks, one of the greatest ever British rock groups, celebrate their 60th Anniversary in 2023. Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, by brothers Ray and Dave Davies with their friend Pete Quaife, and joined by Mick Avory in early 1964, the band quickly established themselves as one of the epoch-defining groups of the 60s, with their impact still being felt around the world today.

The stats speak for themselves: The Kinks have sold over 50 million records worldwide and have been streamed over a billion times; they have achieved five US Top 10 singles, nine US Top 40 albums, seventeen UK Top 20 singles and five UK Top 10 albums, with four albums certified Gold. Among numerous honors, they have received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Service To British Music and have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame. Multi-award winning, legendary frontman Sir Ray Davies is widely recognized as one of the greatest British songwriters of all time.

The Kinks 60 campaign will be a two-year-long celebration of their illustrious musical journey career, confirming their place as one of the greatest and most influential rock groups of all time. As a key part of the campaign, and to mark this milestone, a career-defining anthology, The Journey, will be released on BMG in two parts, with The Journey - Part 1 released on 24 March 2023.

The songs on The Journey - Part 1 (1964-1975) have been handpicked for the first

time by Ray, Dave and Mick, curated according to themes inspired by the trials

and tribulations of their journey through life together as a band since 1963. Featuring hits such as “You Really Got Me,” “Waterloo Sunset,” “All Day And All Of The Night,” “Celluloid Heroes,” “Supersonic Rocket Ship,” “Dead End Street,” and “Death Of A Clown” The Journey - Part 1 follows recently remastered 50th anniversary deluxe editions of The Village Green Preservation Society, Lola Versus Powerman Part 1, Muswell Hillbillies and Everybody's In Show-Biz. All tracks have been lovingly remastered from the original audio sources.

"Ask yourself the question, is this journey really necessary?.......Yes!” Ray Davies muses on The Journey. Dave Davies continues, “I’m delighted with what I think is an inspiring selection of timeless and magical Kinks music.”

The Journey - Part 1 will be released on 2CD, 2LP, Digital and HD Digital albums. The physical formats contain a booklet with band photos and personal track-by-track notes from Ray, Mick, and Dave, sharing their memories of the time these tracks were recorded and weaving them into the Kinks’ incredible story.

Details of the The Journey - Part 2 will follow later this year.

A host of global events and activities will be launching throughout 2023 & 2024 to mark the band’s 60th, with more to be announced in the coming months.

Is anybody else a bit worried about Ray Davies? I don't want to pry but he's been very quiet since his last album five years ago and doesn't seem to turn up for anything anymore.

houdini said, Monday, 11 September 2023 18:19 (two years ago)

He's been fairly involved with the reissues (the bonus disc of him and Dave chatting over a cuppa in the Lola box is pretty priceless.) I've always thought he seemed the type to just pack in in, creatively, at some point and just sit down by the riverside.

henry s, Monday, 11 September 2023 18:35 (two years ago)

Didn't know about that bonus disc, will have to track it down!
A few years ago I heard a depressing account about him hanging around an old haunt but I imagine that's nothing new.

houdini said, Monday, 11 September 2023 19:35 (two years ago)

I'm always on the look out for him if ever I'm in the Muswell Hill/Highgate area.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Monday, 11 September 2023 19:41 (two years ago)

Wasn't some sort of Kinks reunion in the works? That might have been five years ago now, so maybe not anymore.

There were a handful of good songs on Our Country / Americana Act II, enough to make it a decent envoi if he doesn't release anymore.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 01:24 (two years ago)

I think the reunion was first properly mooted in 2014, so nearly a decade ago. Ray did make a surprise appearance at a Dave Davies gig in London in 2015, quite tentatively singing “You Really Got Me”. I think Dave has an issue with Mick Avory; according to Avory, the reunion is now off because Ray and Dave didn’t agree on how best to do it.

How are people feeling about the podcast so far? I've listened all the posted episodes and have learned a few little things from the older host. It's funny how they use the younger host as a naif with no prior knowledge of the band, although he can demonstrate riffs and things on the guitar. I'll be sticking with this.
