Surviving endless rounds of vetoing by some of the world's grouchiest music fans, defeating such contenders as The Impressions' "People Get Ready" (nominated by Tom), Parliament's "Flash Light" (Tarden) and finally trouncing the Fritz-nominated "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes with the help of Sundar's final nixing, the winner is... "All The Young Dudes" by Mott The Hoople , suggested by Arthur.
Post your comments, complaints, insults and recriminations below (it goes without saying that anyone complaining about the winner without having actually participated in the thread will be hunted down, killed and fed to my cat).

the song itself is just marvy. i listened to the record last night to celebrate. how could one have missed it on the list? it's not like it was in smaller letters.
i am going to have to actually ask to listen to a human league cd in a record store now just so i can say i've heard "don't you want me?" maybe i should listen to a ronettes disc too.

PLEASE MISS NOT FAIR MISS I DIDN'T READ THE QUESTION PROPERLY MISS...
------
Well it was worth a try ;) So are we still going to do The Song We All Hate?
Sundar: you're right about the 'axis', but I'm fond of it. I say: fab.
Also Sundar: jeez, don't worry about DYWM!! It's really not that great! I think that for a lot of people it has become symbolic / totemic / a statement of something; but I'm not sure a statement of what. (The only memorable lines: 'I was working as a waitress', etc. Possibly it's the music, not the lyrics, that is thought to be the 'statement'.) It's OK, or feels OK now; but really, there are other things to be seeking out or listening to - don't fret about not having heard this.

This is an aspect of Bowie I rilly rilly heart, his fannish generosity towards all kinds. It can be a bit maddening — NME had a joke abt it c.1981:"They [ie just mentioned upcoming yoofs] are are my favourite group at the moment — er, who is it we're talking about again?" — but it highlights one of his most attractive dimensions, his nervous cracked style, his transparent fan-admiration, his yearning to be other than than who he is.

How d'you PRONOUNCE Foghat? Is it like a hat to protect you from fog? Or like "The Last of the Mughal Princes"? (=mogul). Or as in Irish lough (=scottish loch). Or gh as in rough and tough (ie Foffat = my favourite by some way... )
Riiiiight... I don't remember seeing any limiters on date. But Be My Baby is older than that and it got mentioned...
Patrick: er, er, er, well yes OK Foghat *were* British (which I totally just found out for the first time when you said it), but they were only ever remotely of importance in America (= true, actually, even tho I'm now just dicking abt) = not blokes. Hmmmm. Also! also! also! There was no rock in the 70s anyway that was not Brit Rock. Ha! D'you SEE!!
I do actually think "blokeness" is a post- punk thing, in re rock. Except maybe for Rory Gallagher.
I rest my case.
Black Sabbath: you are taking the piss sir. They are BLACK SABBATH!! THEY ARE NOT BLOKES!! Status Quo: I am stumped and find no flaw in your argument. Rick Parfitt = pretty = not a bloke. But Francis Rossi = blokiest bloke in all the length and breadth of Merrie Englande these many a year arrrr.
I would also in fact have to concede the Cousin-Hudson axis of the abominable Strawbs. So that's three to you (and 12 million to me).

And Blake be careful with what you say there in the back of the class, that bastard history teacher Mark S. wants you to play by the rules. He already put me in front of the class and threatened me with the cane. And he made me memorize "Maoism in Free-Jazz 1968-1976" by James Fartknocker. Jeez, life sucks ;)
