he's great isn't he ?

the lp's full of good songs.
people are saying 'shoegazey'.
maybe that's why i like it so much.

piscesboy, Monday, 7 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

... hate to see a thread die.

Someone tell me more about this Mew. "Comforting Sounds" is all grandiose gorgeousness. LP is not in any non-online store I frequent. Worth the download? Previous album any good?

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the singles Am I Wry? No and especially She Came Home For Christmas, but I haven't heard the album yet. I would want to though.

is this the same Mew who was in the Pooh Sticks?

Just picked up the album used the other day...it's called Frengers. It's actually a band from Denmark, not a guy, so far as I can tell. I'm still not sure what to think of it yet; the background music on the website led me to think that it was going to be a bit more spacey and moody, but it's instead pretty competent modern rock that's obviously tipping its hat a bit to things like MBV, Radiohead and maybe Sigur Ros, without really sounding overly like any of them. I like it...don't love it yet but who knows what repeated listens will do here.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 24 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Just back from Denmark and picked it up over there after seeing a gushing review. I've only had one listen and as was said upthread its pretty good modern rock although the MBV influence wasn't as apparent as I thought it was going to be.

Anybody heard other Danish bands whose albums I didn't get the chance to find - Kitty Wu and Moi Caprice?

mms (mms), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I've just heard it and it's pretty great. However, it seems that there was a Danish-only album released a while back containing some of the same songs and some not on this Frengers that are miles better than some of the ones that are. "Saliva" is great - why not on the English release?

Anyway. It's what I wanted Sigur Ros to sound like. Lots of great ridiculous singing, very obvious attention to detail, songs that start out differently to their beginning (Am I Wry? No in particular gets props for having all three) and not really that shoegaze-y at all.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems they had 2 albums released in DK prior to Frengers, there's a decent discography here:

Possibly my favourite album of the last 5 years. I think they made it especially for me. I hope they come to North America as I'd really like to see them live. Yeah, not shoegaze-y at all really, except maybe in a superficial way. One reviewer described them as a "more indie Sigur Ros", whatever that means. Perhaps they'll be wearing trucker hats by the time they get here!

new 5 track promo doing the rounds. bits of it are *fabulous*

piscesboy, Monday, 5 September 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Still a they, isn't it? I wasn't that keen on the single, but definitely excited to hear the whole thing. "Frengers" still sounds amazing.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Was it ever a "he" ?

The track they did with Stina Nordenstam was predictably genius.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

sorry yeah they/he/ whatever.
'special' = all over slsk and just great.

piscesboy, Monday, 5 September 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Curses, nothing coming up my end. It strikes me that a few years down the track, I prefer the original Danish-only versions of most of the Frengers songs, except "156" and "She Came Home For Christmas", and the ideal would be a mix of both.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Well, I did at least find a nice 2002 radio session on slsk that I'd not heard. Oh well. Look forward, look forward. Care to share the userid of someone who has it piscesboy?

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

Following my post on the main board yesterday, I coincidentally picked up a promo of it in Mr CD (London) yesterday for 4 quid (They had a couple more copies in if anyone's interested).

Had a quick listen last night and off 1st go it sounds magic - More proggy sounding than Frengers but with some genius hooks and top quality songs in there - Very impressed

actionjackson, Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

MORE PROG! YES YES YES YES. Less shoegaze, MORE PROG would improve every band, even an already good one. Do you like some of their ridiculous, over-the-top things like "I Should Have Been a Tsin-Tsi"?

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

What's this about original Danish versions? Any time I've looked in DK for their stuff it's just the standard international version of Frengers. I bought my copy there and certainly don't think it's any different from the one you can buy in the UK.

mms (mms), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

There are two Danish-only albums, from which some (but not all) of the Frengers songs originally came.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

"A triumf for man" and "Half the world is wathing me" was only made in Denmark in a very small number. Both of the CD´s are very rare, and therefor very expensive. Most of the numbers on "HTWIWM" are also on "Frengers". I´ve just bought "HTWIWM"....the price was 150dollars :)

Daniel Nielsen, Friday, 16 September 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

BTW their new album is released here in Denmark on monday.
If anybody has questions about Mew then please write me.

Daniel Nielsen, Friday, 16 September 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

Hi, I bought the new album. (I'm danish)
And all I can say about it is, that it's great.. You simply have to listen to it. The more I listen to it, the more I realise that this is better than anything they've ever made.
Be warned though, even though this is a great record (possibly the best I've ever heard), it needs attention. You wont think it's amazing the first time you listen to it.. And for gods sake (at least the first few times you listen) listen to the album fully, and don't just skip to the songs that you love and have heard before. Most of the songs sound weird on their own, it's supposed to be heard in full..

Anyway, buy it!

Joakim Bloch, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

The single's on for the top 30 this week in the UK, outselling Jamie Cullum, amongst others.

I'm completely in love with ...And The Glass Handed Kites. Once again it seems like an album specifically created for me with proggy bits, indie-ish bits, complicated vocal arrangements, great hooks, J Mascis' gruff voice against Jonas' sounding strange at first and wonderful later, an almost complete lack of embarrassing bits, and some of the most lush synth sounds I've heard in a long time. That they pay homage to Wind & Wuthering-era Genesis with "Saviours of Jazz Ballet" is great, too. I'm kinda glad no one on Pitchfork or AMG have reviewed it. Still no North American release for it yet, nor an explanation of why not. Stupid.

Ok, can anyone give me a reason not to take a flyer on this album for 9 bucks now that it's out in the states? It sounds really silly but kind of great, like when the proggy bits happen it's almost by accident. I feel like it's the kind of album I'll buy and never discuss with anyone I know.

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Buy it.

Because I have a car and lots of my friends don't, I often make them listen to ...And The Glass-Handed Kites when driving. They usually like it a lot but then never ask about it later. This mostly pleases me. It's now had a Pitchfork review (thanks, Nitsuh) but I bet it still won't make a dent. This also pleases me. Very personal music.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 10 August 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

Frengers = classic

...And the glass handed kites = still waiting for it to click, hasn't yet :-(

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 10 August 2006 06:51 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, the Pitchfork review is the reason I know about it so they're still good for something.

I took the plunge at lunch yesterday and listened to the first half on the way to work this morning. I'm pretty impressed, there's some damn decent ensemble playing in those songs. I also love the sort of metallic post-punk guitar tones, keyboards doubling vocal melodies, and smooth segues from song to song. The whole affair is still kind of silly, but if it makes me rock out on the bus at 8 am it's probably doing a couple of things right. It's the kind of derivative but really solid and agenda-free music I try hard to root for.

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Thursday, 10 August 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

Saw them live a couple weeks ago. At one point they play along to video of a CGI cat dressed up in Elizabethan garb playing a flute and marching? WTF?

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Thursday, 10 August 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa, I can't really get behind that.

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Thursday, 10 August 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the band doesn't really do it for me, but to each his own. It may be a mistaken impression, but I feel like these guys are only a step or two away from singing about Dungeons & Dragons or Dr. Who. Which, truth be told, are two things I've enjoyed at one time or another. But still, singing about it is something else altogether.

i think this record's moments of bombast have the exact level of bombast for me to enjoy it. not too understated/ironic yet not too over-the-top.

there's a thousand other reasons why i like it so much, but the perfectly-pitched bombast is what i keep noticing (predictably, i guess).

I'm listening to a Mew song (for the first time) right now, and it sounds like the horrific, derivative baby of a Coldplay/Sigur Ros union. I have this mental image of the Icelandic guy fucking Chris Martin while they harmonize to this bombastic (the Queensryche comparison is spot on) mess of an arrangement. Please God, NO.

No More Stories/Are Told Today/I'm Sorry/They Washed Away//No More Stories/The World Is Grey/I'm Tired/Let's Wash Away is the upcoming fifth studio album by the Danish band Mew. It will be released in Scandinavia on August 19, the UK on August 24, and the United States on August 25. It will also be available for digital purchase on August 17.

According to Jonas Bjerre, this album will be happier, "dancier", and more upbeat than its predecessor, And the Glass Handed Kites, which had a dark theme of fear.

3 mods 1 banhammer (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 August 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)

On first listen it sounds like a less bombastic 'Kites' and maybe a little lazy, repeating a lot of the same songwriting and arrangement ideas as previous records.

But every Mew release has taken time to settle in with, I was horrified at 'Kites' on first listen, now I love it, except it has the worst cover of any record in recent history imo.

MaresNest, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

Hm, I like them when they're bombastic and proggy. I'd love to see them go all the way in the direction of "The Circuitry of the Wolf/Chinaberry Tree". I'm eager to hear the new one anyway since Kites is basically my favourite thing ever.

Sundar, Thursday, 27 August 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I really like this. It sounds like they've preserved their strengths but are branching out a bit more with some complex or non-standard rhythms, elaborate melodies, and polyphony and fewer standard verse-chorus song forms. The vocals seem to shoot even higher than before at times. "Cartoons and Macrame Wounds" is dazzling.

Sundar, Thursday, 27 August 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

BTW, are the first two albums worth seeking out? To my ears, Frengers is enjoyable but rather slight compared to Kites or the new one. "156" and "Snow Brigade" are really good though.

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Saturday, 25 April 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

I think that, listening casually,I had assumed that was a slapped/popped bass played in its high register because of the tone and popping playing style. Listening now, you're probably right. I watched a couple of live clips where that part seems to be left out altogether.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 25 April 2015 17:20 (ten years ago)

i like this album a bunch but its been way overcompressed in mastering which bugs me a lot, it actually sounds better on my broken blown-out earbuds than my nice headphones since it prevents me from being able to hear all the instruments pulse in and out as they push each other out of the way

the songs are fantastic though

They slayed yesterday in Amsterdam. Fantastic show.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Sunday, 24 May 2015 11:16 (ten years ago)

Hmm, I'm pissed off at myself because I'm really not sure about any of this on first listen, some of the tracks have these kinda suspect C*ldplay dynamics (Interview The Girls) I'm feeling there's not a lot that is harmonically rich enough, the twinkly bits aren't twinkly enough and the twists and turns that I like in Mew songs don't seem to be apparent at first, imma stick with it though.

MaresNest, Monday, 25 May 2015 21:42 (ten years ago)

Werent some Coldplay and Mew members together in a band?

First listen of the new album sounds great.

Christ, even the expanded reissues of the first 2 albums are getting too expensive.

They need a b-sides/bonus tracks compilation so badly.

Really love +-, wonderful album. "Clinging To A Bad Dream" is particularly amazing.

It's been a terrific run from Frengers to this. Hope they can keep it up and that the recent departure of a band member doesn't hurt them too much.

Guitarist Bo Hansen recently left the band after being there from the beginning. He has such a distinctive style that I wonder if the band will get over this loss.

I can kinda hear Ripple-era Genesis I guess, It has much more in common with a 21st Century Proggy band like North Atlantic Oscillation, to my ear at least.

MaresNest, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:17 (eight years ago)

The Genesis comparison makes sense and I haven't heard NAO but the point is probably accurate.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 27 January 2017 22:48 (eight years ago)

This has nothing to do with music, but I sing the frontsinger has moved in close to where I live. I see him all the time on the street. Or someone who looks like him. He did get a lot of lookalikes after they broke through fifteen years ago.

How does it compare to the last couple?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:45 (eight years ago)

it's a lot weirder than +/- for sure - "candy pieces all smeared out" for instance sounds somehow both glammy and mathy? on the surface it sounds more "pop" than usual but a lot of the individual tunes are really knotty. lots of sax!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:02 (eight years ago)

That's enticing, actually (depending on what 'pop' means, ha). I feel like they basically achieved perfection on Kites/Stories and were treading water on +/- (which is still enjoyable) so I'm happy to hear that they're mixing things up.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

don't take anything I say too seriously of course, it always takes me a few listens to sort their records out

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:43 (eight years ago)

For me they are best consumed over time, maybe a track a week. The songs are thick and knotty (that's a good term) and they take some listens ...

calstars, Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:54 (eight years ago)

Ha, when a Mew album comes out, I binge on it for days.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Sunday, 23 April 2017 02:15 (eight years ago)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 28 April 2017 18:28 (eight years ago)

after one listen I'm not sure about this one at all...+- seems by far the superior album

but I'll give it a few chances. opening track is a screamer at least (and as with Frengers, it's so good you sort of ignore any mediocrity elsewhere)

imago, Friday, 28 April 2017 19:10 (eight years ago)

doesn't help that it's mastered to remove your ears

imago, Friday, 28 April 2017 19:12 (eight years ago)

& I usually dgaf about that. but this is that rare occasion when dgaf autocorrects to deaf

imago, Friday, 28 April 2017 19:13 (eight years ago)

it has maybe less obvious standouts than +/- but felt about equal in overall quality. looking forward to spending more time with it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 19:20 (eight years ago)

er fewer obvious standouts*

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 28 April 2017 19:20 (eight years ago)

Looking forward to this, has the line-up change noticeable?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 28 April 2017 20:55 (eight years ago)

"Candy" is nice...

calstars, Friday, 28 April 2017 22:39 (eight years ago)

But I tuned out soon after. It's so dense

calstars, Friday, 28 April 2017 22:46 (eight years ago)

is the second track's beat deliberately making me think of Bowie's Modern Love or am I imagining things?

StanM, Saturday, 29 April 2017 16:01 (eight years ago)

I'm really enjoying this (and binging, via Spotify so far, as predicted). I think it's probably better than +/-. "Candy" is def a highlight of the songs that had not been released ahead of time.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 29 April 2017 17:08 (eight years ago)

I can see how you could think of "Modern Love". Based on a quick scan, this is an attempt at a v approximate transcription of the main bass/snare patterns in the two songs, where ">" indicates a snare hit. They move at roughly similar tempi. The Mew drummer varies the beat throughout the song, though, and sometimes gets a little closer to the Bowie beat. In the outro, the second bar just becomes quarters.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 29 April 2017 18:07 (eight years ago)

wow, thank you for that!

StanM, Saturday, 29 April 2017 18:27 (eight years ago)

Video for "In a Better Place". Also, I swear this Youtube stream sounds better than the 'mastered for iTunes' version I bought. The drums seem pretty squashed on mine. Did anyone get the CD or LP?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 12 May 2017 12:36 (eight years ago)

doesn't help that it's mastered to remove your ears

Seriously, does anyone who listens to Scandinavian indie-prog actually want this?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 12 May 2017 12:39 (eight years ago)

Yeah it's literally intolerable. St Anger-level compression. I only have the album on Spotify

calstars, Friday, 12 May 2017 14:49 (eight years ago)

Man, listening to Stories after a while really drives home how much grander, lovelier, and more unique it was compared to the last two.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 12 May 2017 15:53 (eight years ago)

Hm, maybe that's not fair. I think the highs are higher, though.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 12 May 2017 16:17 (eight years ago)

And lol now I'm listening to Visuals again and thinking it's really good pop-rock, despite the mastering.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 12 May 2017 17:03 (eight years ago)

the mastering doesn't sound that offensive to me, and certainly not at St Anger levels

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 12 May 2017 17:24 (eight years ago)

+/- was mastered pretty loud too

ciderpress, Friday, 12 May 2017 17:26 (eight years ago)

Yeah, I had the same problem with +/-. Simon, what format are you listening on? In both cases, I bought these from iTunes.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 12 May 2017 17:41 (eight years ago)

After a few listens I think this is their most consistent album. Pretty strong all the way through

one year passes...

On my CD version of Visuals I didn't notice any compression problems, it sounds wonderful.

Was thinking this that is where they take a slight step down but I'm not sure. Perhaps on a par with Frengers but not as good as Kites, Stories and +/-?
It's a lot subtler, I was worried about the poppiness taking over too much but perhaps I needn't have, although I do miss some of the dynamism that only really takes center stage on track 3 on this album.

"I am a quiet light chaser

aint I painful?

it's already nightfall"

Nobody mentioned "Twist Quest"! obvious highlight for me.

Is there any male rock vocalist who has a sweeter and more adorable voice?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 15 June 2018 19:16 (seven years ago)

Saw them play all of Frengers live a few weeks back in front of an absolutely adoring Danish audience. That album is like 'Funeral' or 'Turn On the Bright Lights' for us. It dips in the middle though, but they played a few hits before they got to the main event, which meant they played five songs that went Special, Zookeepers Boy, Am I Wry, 156, Snow Brigade. That was pretty good!

How does everyone feel about Visuals in retrospect? It's not a bad album at all but I can't help but feel a bit cynical and disappointed that it sounds like a turn towards the radio pop of the time.

Not the easiest band to collect, so I would appreciate a compilation of the first two albums, b-sides, anniversary tracks and japanese bonus tracks.
