Let's make a new version of this classic thread, the other one has simply become too bulky with almost 500 answers. Which music did people waste their cash on recently?

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks to Momus I went and bought a Jake Thackray comp at the weekend, and it is quite wonderful. Surprisingly lush, I imagined a much more ascetic sound from my memory of him appearing on TV in the early 70's.

Also Boogie Down Productions by all means necessary.

And yesterday I got Nilsson's As time goes by- complete Schmillson in the night sessions.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Very few albums bought recently but I have been plowing through the promos and found some surprisingly grand winners, like this Inventing Edward album to which I listen right now...

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

awh, now I want to go listen to 'malesch' again

This record, and to an extent this band, is shockingly good. Apparently, someone forgot to make them as famous as Can and Faust.

    That ISO record is good.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I wish otomo had kept 'ISO' around longer, much more varied and interesting than the 'filament' stuff. I saw them live in SF in 98 and i was feeling pretty alive. watching the drummer play with a live microphone instead of a drumstick _because of the sound_... oh hell I'll just start an Otomo thread or something.

'malesch' is very very impressive... ok I will go check out 'second'.

    milton, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

much more varied and interesting than the 'filament' stuff

You mean 30 minutes of straight sine wave isn't doing it for you?

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

sachiko m's often just simple pain for me. but I loved her track on the 'improvised music from japan' box set, it was busy and filled with details, made my ears happy rather than sad, so maybe I just have more listening to do...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

RS, I'm listening to it right now. Some songs I really loved right away ("Hurting Each Other" and "Rainy Days and Mondays" are alone worth the price of admission), some I wasn't as mad for at first. I was somehow a little surprised by the 'dentist's office' vibe of the first few tracks but they've grown on me by the second listen. On the whole, it seems pretty good. "Sing" is really good too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I grew up hearing most (or possibly even all) of these songs, so I know what to expect, but I've never owned anything by the Carpenters. I was thinking I would just buy through their albums, but I think I'd rather get a collection like this first. I don't want anything with recordings that has been too tampered with.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, now I think "Sing" is kind of cheesy.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

LOL. Look, some of the songs are a little cheesy.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Carpenters are like the greatest thing ever! It's starting to click that I've heard some of these songs before.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

    Amnesiac is awesome so far.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

After crawling around on the floor, flipping through the clearance bins at a local shop, picked up lots of stuff very unlike most of what I own/listen to. And payed just $20 + change for the whole bundle!

    Killing Joke - s/t
    Killing Joke - Night Time
    Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic - Sonic Geology
    Japancakes - The Sleepy Strange

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

All right, here's the fun of scrounging through an almost dead store. The Wherehouse near work, like most of the rest, is closing down completely, and at this point their $5 and under bin has been reduced to 20 cents a disc. Ridiculous. Most of it is utter, utter, UTTER crap, but at that price, there's always room for a few random things -- including some things are also just crap but what the hell, give it a whirl, review it for the AMG, whatever. I left the Darkside and Thin White Rope because I have them already, but among what was remaining:

    2 Unlimited, Get Ready
    Jon Balke/Oslo 13, Nonsentration
    The Beloved, Happiness
    Clouds, Thunderhead
    The Family Cat, Magic Happens
    Five Thirty, Bed
Fudge Tunnel, The Complicated Futility of Ignorance, In a Word
    Gay Dad, Leisure Noise
    Gobblehoof, Gobblehoof
    Monie Love, Down to Earth
    Marvelous 3, Hey! Album
    O'Jays, The Ultimate
    Prodigy, Baby's Got a Temper
    Ratcat, Tingles
    Scorn, Deliverance
Shudder to Think, First Love, Last Rites
    John P. Strohm, Vestavia
    Television Personalities, Privilege
To Live and Shave in LA, An Interview with the Mitchell Brothers
Xtra Large, Now I Eat Them
Pay it All Back, Volume 5
    Trans Slovenia Express
A Cat-Shaped Hole in My Heart
    Kismet (original soundtrack)

Then there was the almost-nothing paid for the DVD for Battlefield Earth. There's always room for laughter at the follies of the likes of Travolta.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh you got Trans Slovenia Express? How does that sound?

    Me:

    -Tok Tok Vs Soffy O
    -Le Tigre 1st album

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

null, it's another self-released CD-R. Tara had just a couple of copies with her when she and the Iditarod pulled into our unworthy burg last week (followed by NNCK the following night! so all this weird weather was just the start...) i'm blanking as to whether Moon or Troibaritz had the Gibbons Bros/Fursaxa trax (Moon, i think. yeah. Moon.) BTW, i urged Tara to sweet-talk her way onto the 5/3-4 Brattleboro Free Folk Fest bill. so hopefully she has done just that, and you'll be there, and you can find out for yourself soon enough. if not, Ed Eclipse will doubtless be hawking 'em once he gets back to Bullhead City.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Summers, you know the power of Ed as well? Great guy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And meanwhile...one last final this was it megatrawl through that almost dead Wherehouse was done today. Total price I paid for the below -- $98...which would have been the normal cost for only five CDs there before all this. The Wherehouse's ridiculous pricing policy is why I feel for the employees but not one whit for the company itself.

S.I. Futures (aka Si Begg) -- The Mission Statement
    Caroline's Spine -- Monsoon
Chicks on Speed -- this B-52's tribute/collaboration single or something
Julee Cruise -- The Art of Being a Girl
    DJ Assault -- Jefferson Ave.
The Emotions -- Best of My Love (best-of comp)
Joy Electric -- The Art and Craft of Popular Music (double disc best of)
Jucifer -- I Name You Destroyer (JBR mentioned this on a thread today, thought I'd give it a whirl!)
    Kentucky Headhunters -- Best Of
    Longwave -- Day Sleeper
Men Without Hats -- Pop Goes the World
Stephin Merritt -- Eban and Charley (my continuing project to investigate everything else that ISN'T 69LS)
Robert Palmer -- Best of Both Worlds (greatest hits double disc, this looks ridiculously great, actually)
The Presidents of the United States of America -- Pure Frosting
Charlie Rich -- Ultimate Collection (also ridiculously great, and it has "Feel Like Going Home" on it, which the Walkabouts turned into one of their greatest ever performances, so I've always wanted to hear the original...)
Jonathan Richman -- Home of the Hits (this one is weird, it's actually a double disc comp where the first disc cherrypicks the Berzerkley stuff and the second disc is actually a compilation of all the other Berzerkley bands, the Rubinoos and Greg Kihn and all that)
Sam and Dave -- Rhino best-of
    Sixteen Horsepower -- Folklore
Percy Sledge -- It Tears Me Up (Rhino best-of)
The Strawbs -- Halcyon Days (double disc best of)
Suede -- A New Morning (finally -- also it's the bonus-track-laden Australian version, rah)
    Sylvia -- Rhino best-of
Trashmonk -- Mona Lisa Overdrive (I figure this sucks but might be amusing)
    Treepeople -- Just Kidding
    Erkki-Sven Tüür -- Crystallisatio
    Wumpscut -- Eevil Young Flesh
v/a -- the One AD/Two AD/Three AD series of ambient comps on Waveform -- ah, the mid-Nineties
v/a -- Trance Atlantic Two (part of the Volume series of spinoff comps
v/a -- World of Sound (this looks really fun, it's this random collection of BBC TV and radio theme songs)
v/a -- Sounds You Can Feel (Doc Martin mix disc)
v/a -- Danny Tenaglia: Choices (some sort of double-disc 'All Back to Mine' style thing, his favorite tracks etc.)

    Electric Company -- 62-56
Charlie Feathers -- Get With It (double disc on Revenant)
    Herbert -- Around the House
    Jiffy Loop -- s/t
    Mount Florida -- Stealth EP
    Siddal -- The Crossing
Soulwax -- Much Against Everyone's Advice
v/a -- Sub Rosa Underwood Two
v/a -- Six Stage Phaser (Vinyl Communications comp)
v/a -- Clicks and Cuts 2 (3 disc Mille Plateaux comp with the likes of Farben, Swayzak, Vladislav Delay, Reinhard Voigt, Thomas Brinkmann, Hakan Lidbo, Fennesz, etc...)

...and the BBC radio production of The Lord of the Rings with Ian Holm, found used at a great price. Rock.

Ordered yesterday from Ed Eclipse (for he doth rule):

    Fushitsusha - s/t (PSF 3/4)
Fushitsusha - Double Live (PSF 15/16)

Thanks, Julio, for reminding me in another thread that I still needed to snag those jewels!

    Durophet
    Live
    Disallow
    Psychedelic Speed Freaks '84 - '85
    Desperado
(Speed Free Sonic is on back order)

and... Acid Mothers Temple - St. Capt. Freakout & the Magic Bamboo Request, which is really tres awesome in headphones..........

the Gun Club - Fire of Love
    Woven Hand - Blush
Tröckener Kecks - Één op één miljoen/Betaalde liefde [=dutch]
    La Düsseldorf - La Düsseldorf
At the Close of Every Day - Zalig zijn de armen van geest

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, "Voodooism", Lee Perry, pretty cheap - not sure that this is as good as it's supposed to be but "Wolf Out Deh/Shepherd Rod" rules.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

... plus "River"/"River Stone" by Zap Pow which invents early Cabaret Voltaire

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Kid Koala - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (already a favorite but never owned it)
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
New Pornographers - Electric Version (not being a critic, was v. excited to find an advance copy in the used bin of one of my regular haunts, although it has no booklet; on a first listen I like lots, songwriting seems a little less straightforward than on Mass Romantic -- reminds me of The Loud Family, which is just fine)
Oval - 94 Diskont and OvalProcess
Pale Horse and Rider - These Are the New Good Times
    Pere Ubu - Dub Housing
Soft Pink Truth - Do You Party? (Was afraid I wouldn't like this but I LOVE it; does more for me than Vocalcity)
    Tortoise - Millions Now Living...

    And on order:
    Manitoba - Up in Flames
Coloma - Finery (very excited about this based on what I've heard online, although the nice guy at the counter seemed a little skeptical that they'd be able to get it for me)

And REALLY I have to cut back on CD purchases; this has been the "worst" month ever and I can't keep spending like this. REALLY.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, thanks. Only listened to it once but yeah, pretty good. Has a few tracks that I have elsewhere but still worth what I paid--$10. In case you didn't know, that Yabby You disc's full title is 'King Tubby's Prophecy of Dub' and is a must have if you are at all into dub. All the Blood & Fire Yabby You releases are very highly recommended (surprise surprise).

    M. Ward - "Transfigurations of Vincent" - which left my jaw on the floor. I picked it up because somebody on this board, and I forget who, was extolling its many virtues. And it has many virtues, which worked out well.

Fruit Bats - "Mouthfuls" - I have a weakness for that jingle jangle morning shit

Minus 5 - "Down with Wilco" - which I haven't actually listened to yet.

That new Sadies album, the name of which eludes me, which I also have yet to hear

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 May 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" still annoys me because the music's so happy and then Bono has to ruin things by bitching about the IRA. "Seconds" just blows - why did everyone sound so fruity in the 80s? Oh well, "New Year's Day" should justify this purchase but I was hoping there would be one or two other good songs on this too.

Terry Riley & John Cale - "Church of Anthrax"
Art Bears - "Hopes and Fears" (first song skips - arggggh!)
Keith Jarrett - "G.I. Gurdjieff Sacred Hymns"

    o. nate (onate), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe it - I fixed the dreaded skip! In my desperation, I did a search on Google for record skips, and found this webpage. I decided to give it a try and it actually worked. I didn't have a straight pin so I used the thinnest sewing needle I could find. Check this out if you have any records that skip:

    http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/7049/skips.htm

I think maybe I'll try that record-washing trick on some of my cruddy old records too.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

    I just ordered:

Two Mohammed Abdou CDs, including one double CD recorded live in Kuwait. I only have two other Mohammed Abdou CDs, but several things on tape (though I lost one of my irreplaceable bootlegs of one of his concerts). He's a great singer, but the backing music can vary from mind-blowing to intolerable. The samples from two of these CDs on www.maqam.com sound promising. Anyway, I thought I'd better grab anything I really want from Saudi Arabia now.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 15 May 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, that'll keep you busy. what's the Subbulakshmi like?

'In This Life' is SO GOOD. when it first came out it felt a little displaced, odd that such a RIO-compatible record would be coming out 10 years on, but now it's decades after that even, and the record simply sounds fantastic. every single track.

    jleideck, Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

    Varttina - Ilmatar
Gary Lucas - Edge of Heaven

    Al Green - Greatest Hits

willem (willem), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I just listened to the Subbulakshmi today. It's a live vinyl recording from 1965 from a concert in Madras. I don't know all her records or anything but I really liked this. Her voice is great - it feels so relaxed and almost conversational at the same time that it's completely virtuosic and melodically perfect. The recording quality is pretty good considering its age. The pieces are about medium length.

In my efforts to outdo Ned as a music consumer, today I borrowed

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children
    Beck - Midnite Vultures
    The Beatles - Revolver

and burnt 9 CDs worth of concerts from the Music Gallery archives (Derek Bailey/Evan Parker, Eugene Chadbourne/Larry Dubin, David Mott, Elliot Sharp, Jim Tenney, Henry Kaiser).

After acquiring all this great music the first thing I put on when I came home was "Renegade" by Styx. I just want you all to know that.

But now I'm listening to Pharoah Sanders.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm starting to really like this Mohammed Abdo Live in Kuwait 2001 CD.

This Saudi stuff is much more groove-oriented than most of the Egyptian music I listen to; and I hear more similarities to some sorts of African and Indian music. I think it would actually be fairly accessible to western listeners.

Ng is an Australian turntablist. half of GCTTCATT (AmpErase on Mego, with Farmers Manual's Matthias Gmachl). Vigil is forthcoming on Quecksilber, apparently a new Staubgold sublabel, and is the sequel to Ambarchi/Ng's 2000 Staubgold encounter, Reconnaissance.

yeah, that LMY is extraordinary. shame it's so unobtainable. nature of the beast.

Good News - early gospel, 4 CD box on Proper
After Dinner - Paradise of Replica (great of course)
Henry Flint - back porch hillbilly blues vol.1
Stock, Hausen and Walkman - Stop!
Rip Off Artist - Plain Brown Wrapper ep
Martin Tetrault / Otomo Yoshihide - studio analogique numerique three 3" CD box

Otomo's solo live show in sf last night was amazing. one hour of rising sound, but incredibly expressive, transcendent actually. incredible sound system, it just kept getting louder -- without ear fatigue. not like I have any hearing left.

Thinking Plague -- well suzanne does have kind of a girly sing-songy voice. But for me that only adds to the tension since the music's rather brutal.

summerslastsound -- how's that 4 CD Faust box set? worth it for the 90 seconds of 70's outtakes I'll bet.

after just one listen, i don't care for the M83 at all, for pretty much the same reason that Guitar left me cold. it's all just so saccharine, like a cloying coctail of artificial fruit flavors. can't be very wholesome. left me with the urge to scour vigorously with some Kevin Drumm, just in case. can tooth decay affect your ears?

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's best at the end, when the whole thing finally goes gothy without apology. (This could be one of the many reasons I like the Smashing Pumpkins, since they captured the sense and sound of goth/light on a song like "Sometimes" more than just about any other band who followed...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to stop playing this game now. Stop using these excuses: but these are brand new reissues I must buy right now; but this is an album that I have wanted since I was 8/15/21; but if I don't buy it now, it will disappear. . .

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 30 May 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Which songs are you thinking of specifically, Ned?

By M83? I would say pretty much each of the last three or four songs -- they all sounded like epic album-enders (but weren't! well, except for the actual last one).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 May 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

    Borrowed from the library:

    Steely Dan: Two Against Nature
Prince and the N.P.G.: Diamonds and Pearls
    Todo Tango [compilation]
    N*E*R*D: In Search of. . .

Also received the Adolescent's Orquesta's Disco de Oro that I've been waiting for. I recognize the first four songs, though I hadn't known they were by this band. There are some good songs here, but I think I'd like to hear another band covering them. There are some unnecessary and annoying bombastic/tinkly synthesizer introductions. Supposedly their most album really cooks and they sound grown-up on it. But this collection is like: four good song, marred by bad intros, but still enjoyable to me if I'm feeling generous; a middle section of songs that are just too schmaltzy; and a few songs at the end that have lost the annoying intros and have a harder edge, but are perhaps less distinctive than the first four. (Of course, I may only like them because I have had time to hear and dance to them while out in clubs.)

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 30 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Helmut 'Joe' Sachse (I think dave q might like him)
Achim Knipsel- guitar solo live and at home
also founf harry miller/radu malfatti's 'bracknell breakdown' on Ogun and that's a killer duo set.
also: 'Epiphany' by company on incus.

summerslastsound, how's abbc? i've seen it a local shop for quite a fair price but somehow i'm still reluctant...

willem (willem), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

willem, it's good but not great. the Amor Belhom Duo's café Parisienne-isms and classical stylings blend surprisingly well into the Calexicans' spagh-indie western canvas. i'm not wild about the vocals, and the cultural crossweave can be too literal at times (must they drag in the accordion every time sights along the Seine are implied?), but it's a pleasant change of pace with a number of exquisite tracks. if the price is right, and you enjoy Calexico's non-Morricone moments, you should pull the trigger.

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 6 June 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

w/ borb every record is 'the same' and yet 'different': a cliche but kind of true here. their collective playing does go through a bit of a change i'd say. i need to spend more time with it to say whether its great or not (i'm not sure).

anyway: null, ans my borb thread from a couple of days ago:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mostly eBay and dogged stalk-and-grab mailorder activity, with a generous sampling of promos courtesy of friends on high. but i owe this last hefty haul to a drizzly afternoon spent combing the shelves of an actual indie-distro warehouse, breathing in glorious lungfuls of actual indie-distro warehouse dust, plucking one-offs and snatching returns from the brink of supposed oblivion. a rare treat. of course i'll (literally) be paying for the pleasure for months on end. but as long as we only live once, might as well do it all in caps.

    summerslastsound, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

    Borrowed from the library:

    Duke Ellington: Far Eastern Suite
    Coltrane/Olatunji concert
    Merle Haggard: The Peer Sessions

Haven't listened to any of them completely so far, and none of them are things I particularly want to listen to at the moment.

I also borrowed a handful of samplers from magazines and so forth, mostly divided between electronic dance (incl. IDM) stuff (just so I can connect names and sounds) and "world music." None of it very inspiring, but I guess that's what happens when you listen to things because they happen to be there (and you want to put off buying more CDs), rather than because you seriously expect to enjoy them.

    hmm, yesterday i picked up

john fahey - old fashioned love (love this)

pernice brothers - yours, mine, and ours (first time ive actually bought one of their records, after a number of recommendations in their direction. i think im liking it, its growing on me. certainly a fair bit of smiths/morrissey influence (who i love) going on, and some cure and new order too, but its got more of a rootsy drive to it, more twangy, so it sounds kinda odd. i think its good though)

i wanted to buy the new nina nastasia as well, cos i really liked her last one and her john peel sessions, but it doesnt seem to be out here yet.

i held off buying "hail to the thief", im not sure i really need another radiohead album in my life right now.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, I really like Aluminum Group's Happyness album -- though it's the first thing I've heard by them (I was tipped to it by a post here on ILM, can't remember whose). I'd say musically a good comparison is China Crisis or some other light, vaguely jazzy synth-pop -- it *feels* sort of techy, but less in the beats than a vague shimmer around the periphery. It reminds me a little of Gaucho-era Steely Dan or Fagen's Nightfly, though I think that's got as much to do with the lyrics as the music. I turned a friend on to it a few weeks ago, and his four-word summary was "deceivingly layered, literate, timely." Worth checking out...

    Yeah, three:
"Funereality", "Destined to fester" and "In the grip of winter"
And for some reason it's remastered too!
I haven't listened to it yet, so I don't know if those three songs are some rare versions, or if they've just for some reason have put the Mental Funeral and Acts Of The Unspeakable version on here. (I guess two of them might be from the Retribution for the dead EP?`)

Remind me not to get the rerelease of Mental Funeral, as there's no way they can improve the sound on that.

What is up with the Steely Dan backcatalog flying off the shelves around here? Is it just that time of year?

Well, in my case, it's just that I've sort of recently discovered them. I mean, I was vaguely aware of their existence, but I'd never really sought out their stuff or even heard much of it. I blame Jody Beth Rosen, I guess, since it was her POX thread and the positive responses it got that inspired me to download a few of their songs. Then I picked up Countdown to Ecstasy since it had "My Old School" on it. The album proceeded to quickly grow on me like a vicious fungus. So I picked up the preceding release and then the following one. So far I still like Countdown the best, but I plan to continue on through their catalog until I lose interest - and if I don't lose interest, even better.

    o. nate (onate), Sunday, 15 June 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

    !!! - Me & Giuliani...
    Scott Walker - Tilt

First played Tilt last night after a long day filming in an stultifyingly hot abandoned "boys' village" in Wales. Got home, saw Emma, drank a few beers, went to bed at 1am, put it on on headphones. A record has never scared me before. As if A Farmer In The City wasn't ominous and daemonic enough, during the opening moments of The Cockfighter I felt like someone was scratching their fingernails down the inside of the back of my skull, peeling my cerebelum away, and then, on the verge of sleep, it errupted in beautifully hideous and disturbed industrial sense-rape, clattering drum-things shocking me upright and Walker emitting this awful, harrowing ullulation over the top. I was nearly physically sick. It was magnificent.

haven't listened too much to the kat onoma yet, willem. there are some excellent songs but there are some disposable ones as well. "que sera votre vie?" is very catchy.

sundar, can you say something about that Susie Ibara CD once you've listened to it? I am curious about it, but I am wondering how out it is. It could sound to unstructured for my taste, but some things I've read about her have made me interest and (stupid reasons): I like her name, and I like the cover. Actually, I often end up trying things because I like the names of the people involved, and sometimes it leads to good things.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and someone at work made copies of 3 Pakistani CDs for me. I don't know anything about them and haven't heard them yet:

I think I like Nayyara Noor. I want to marry someone named Nayyara Noor, what a great name. Seriously, this is nice kind of mellow stuff. The mood reminds me of something else, but I don't know what, possibly something much closer to home culturally.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

    Today I took out:

Prince - Controversy (This is on track 2. It's so good so far that it actually saddens me that my hippie/indie Dylan-loving, Yes/Queen/Boston/Rush-hating pop music prof loves this album.)

Parliament - Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome
Dr N Ramani & Trichy Sankaran - Lotus Signatures

Ingrid of course was married to Rainer Werner Fassbinder and this is the other reason i bought it....

    duane, Friday, 20 June 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Susie Ibarra disc is lovely. I had listened to it before actually. It has warmth, gentleness, and subtlety. The instruments play against each other in a way that comes off perfectly relaxed and 'natural'. I don't think it's *too* wild. There are a lot of warm melodic phrases in it that clearly suggest the South/East Asian influences, some beautiful dynamics in the intricate percussion work. I find some of it a little mysterious-sounding, and much of it sort of sensual (which might be partly because it reminds me of a Susie Ibarra fan I had a crush on some years ago).

A little more on the Frith: I'm happy with the crispy clean, full production. Everything feels very impassioned, from the pretty and sometimes aching melodies to the full strumming to the violent noise.

At the end of the day I'm still not a huge Prince fan so far. The Parliament is awesome though.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 20 June 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, there's a brief droney Pauline Oliveros accordion solo on the Ibarra. Somehow I get the impression this disc might appeal to you, RS. It's on the 'mellow-garde' side.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 20 June 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Friend of my boyfriend works at BMG Music Online, so we dropped in last week while I was briefly in NYC. There were abandoned CDs everywhere and she said help yourself and made it clear I should take a lot. But most of these CDs were abandoned for good reasons, I have to say.

    CDs I kept:
Nonesuch Explorer Series (reissues on CD) - Tahiti (Gaugin Years), Java (Jasmine Isle), Bali (Music for the Shadow Play)
    I Muvrini - Pulifunie
Ahmed Abdul-Malik - Jazz Sounds of Africa
Alfred Schnittke - Choir Concerto & other choral works
Chemical Brothers - Come With Us

A few other CDs went to my boyfriend's Mom, and the rest I traded in, at a shop back home, for:
Loud Family - Tape of Only Linda
Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane EP box set
Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime reissue
    !!! - "Me & Giuliani..." EP
Beach Boys - Sounds of Summer compilation

Also while in NYC, I bought:
    Audio Bullys - Ego War
Thomas Fehlmann - Visions of Blah

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 21 June 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

''Nonesuch Explorer Series (reissues on CD) - Tahiti (Gaugin Years), Java (Jasmine Isle), Bali (Music for the Shadow Play)''

got a couple of discs of this series (both are gamelan discs). good stuff.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 21 June 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty excited about the Java and Bali discs -- among other things, I think they'll give me a basic idea about the different gamelan traditions in these two regions. The school where I teach has a large gamelan program, with both Javanese and Balinese ensembles, and I've always felt I ought to know the basic differences. (Something beyond "Balinese = faster and more sparkling"...)

I am SO ANGRY!! I bought this 2CD set 'Disco Freakout' to get some tracks to burn for my friend John's birthday party mix CDs. This mutha was £16.99 and guess what - they've (spit) *remixed* all the tracks together in one continuous sequence. Imagine some fake-tanned Ibiza-twit Darren fucking with the tempo and adding 'nu' beats onto such classics as 'Boogie Nights' and 'And The Beat Goes On' and 'He's The Greatest Dancer'!! There were also fake shouts and whoops of joy from people 'partying' dubbed on!! Imagine that!! How dare this, this.... THING exist! It never said on the packaging ANYWHERE! There could have been a warning - " Remixed exclusively by D.J Clueless C*nt from Basildon". Needless to say it went right back to HMV today. Arse!!

nina nastasia - run to ruin (love this too, jim white on drums = genius)
AC/DC - dirty deeds done dirt cheap (figured i needed some more ac/dc in my collection. of course it rocks like a muhfukka)

on the lookout for: i need a collection of mississipi john hurt's early recordings, all of them, but hmv only had the 60s stuff and selectadisc didnt have anything with him. to amazon i go!

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 29 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

radiohead - hail to the thief (on one hand i am slightly disappointed that the versions are so close to the mp3s which emerged on the interweb a couple of months ago. godrich was bullshitting everyone. on the other hand those versions could not be topped. very angry about the record company that the cd does not run on my cd-rom drive. swearing to myself that i won't buy copy-protected cds anymore. probably i won't be able to hold that promise to myself.)

cure - trilogy live at the tempodrom, berlin, november 2002, dvd (have got mixed feelings about this. still think that pornography is totally overestimated. there is an amazing song though. a strange day. it's better in the concert than on the original cd. this song is like an ascent to heavens. the drums are fantastic. building up to droneland. there is a moment when the guitar plays when time stands still. simon gallup on bass is ace. and his live performance is very cool. stopped the video after the first song on disintegration. can't digest those mystic hovering wagner-vorspiel like keyboards anymore. can't hold back from the notion that this is fascistic aesthetics. haven't listened to the rest. will probably never listen to bloodflowers. i must admit that i regret very much not having seen that concert though. the video has got something very professional and cool about it. smith doesn't look like a forty-something. as if his body had been frozen somewhen in the eighties. maybe he is ageless. still hate the same thing about videos i have always hated about them. too many cuts. there is no camera shot of more than two or three seconds.)

    alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The trick with live DVDs if you can't stand to watch them is to just listen to them. Mmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Just picked up Glenn Branca's The Ascension and Triple R Friends. My god!! I listened to the Branca last night extremely loud, and it floored me. The opening bassline in the first movement is completely badass. And jeebus is Friends ever amazing! Track 1 sounds like all the good parts about the opening 1-2 punch of "Everything in its Right Place"/"Kid A" made into an extract and laced with an actual groove -- all the way down to the slightly-distressed-but-bored glitch vocals and the billowy synths (heck, even the chord changes are reminiscent of "EIIRP"). Beautiful.

    Clarke B. (stolenbus), Sunday, 29 June 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, Marcello played "The Ascension" on his show the other day and damn it was good indeed. Good to finally hear it after years of hearing about the darn thing.

    Received in the mail:

Farid el Atrache: Eternal Songs, Vol. 1
    Abdel Halim Hafez: Resala

The string sections on these Farid songs are getting to me a little. I think I like the stuff on Vol. 2 more, but it wasn't available. I don't like the chorus too much either. (So glad Oum Kalthoum mostly did away with having a chorus in the background.)

    Borrowed from the library:

Murray ("Piranha") Perahia w/ the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields performing Bach Keyboard Concertos Nos. 1, 2 & 4
    Eleni Karaindrou: Trojan Women
    Nikos Skalkottas: Duos with Violin
    Kronos Quartet: Nuevo
    Steve Reich: Triple Quartet

I don't know anything about the Greek CDs.

Yes you do Jim - and you can still get a free Crispy Ambulance live CD with Black Music if you order it soon (they appear to have sold out of free the Section 25 CD that was given away with initial copies of The Night Watch).

Because I compiled that list from my on-line order history at various places I managed to omit one of the - if not THE - best album I've acquired recently:

    FourFathers - Dust

I'd start a thread about The FourFathers and their incredibly talented and verstaile bass player Benjamin Horrendous if I thought there was a reasonable chance that anyone else here had heard of them and might contribute to such a thread rather than leaving it to sink slowly and ignominiously to the depths.

Everyone who likes good experimental rock music - especially Captain Beefheart - really should give them a try 'though: http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~bgwaters/Mymusic.html

Then, maybe, when you've bought all the albums (tell Ben I sent you if you are ordering anything btw!), we can have a proper thread about them, eh?
