Pharrel Williams Overexposure

Alright, so he produces....yeah, great, but isn't he the least bit concenred of spreading himself too thin? I can't count the sheer avalance of cameo appearances he's logged on other peoples' records. I mean, give it a rest.

Also, it's not like his voice is all that great. Seems awfully thin to me.

Discuss.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I wondered if he was deliberately trying to look dorky in the Timberlake video

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I feel obligated to come to mr. Williams defense since I still haven't grown tired of the neptunes sound, I always point to their work as an example of top 40 clearly kicking indie ass in sonic/artistic innovation. However, Pharrel must be super coked up if he fails to recognize his dorkish behavior as of late. Seeing him prance smugly through Snoop's Beautiful video greatly increases his punchability factor for me.

theodore fogelsanger, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

shitty lyricist, decent producer, tired Curtis Mayfield-rip-off vocalist, doesn't particularly excite me as a visual presence (and I'm not picky, I think Puffy is terrific on MTV). I don't care if I ever see him, hear his voice again. And I'm not DYING for more beats, though I'd probably take them.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he's gorgeous and I like his shtick in videos. Maybe I haven't been watching enough MTV.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

also, the man participated in a homage to the movie Harlem Nights. This is not what we do.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

he was already overexposed a year or so ago. visually and sonically - half of the neptunes stuff is great, half is complete and utter bollocks.

by the way: what do you guys make of 'provider'? in the first, and better, version, i was convinced that the lyrics were ironic ("i'm a rider, giiirl - and i love you!"), but with the new and analog mtv version, i'm not sure any more.

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

let's talk about chad hugo underexposure

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that is not stupid! why is he never anywhere to be seen? is pharell putting him down? or does he really prefer that ps2 to getting out much?

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ding-ding-ding!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm perplexed by many of y'alls preference for NERD In Search of version 1. I like both versions but the rock out songs have more hooks, making the euopean version seem unfinished in comparison. I like both versions of Provider but Lapdance and Run to the Sun with the live instruments are tighter more danceable.

theodore fogelsanger, Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my girlfriend thinks he is cute as well, but he looks awful with his head shaved in the 'Provider' video. i think it must be great to be Pharrell right now tho and i like what he's doing generally. yes he did look quite dorky dancing with Justin, notice that Pharrell doesnt seem afraid to put himself out like that - he's got that Nerd schtick and is not blinging like Puffy or Dre were although he's just as facey, here there and everywhere.

one thing that bugs me is how much Pharrell actually does in the studio. he seems a very dynamic inspiring ideas man whereas Chad Hugo is the silent engineer mastermind who actually makes it all happen. i'm not sure how they work live, but Pharrell's obviously a jack of all trades - he does a passable Curtis Mayfield impression on one of those Nike adverts, and the voice is something different at least.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i still think that provider was ambiguous and dangereous on the first album. on the second, it's just plain nice.

Jay K (Jay K), Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to think of it, I do miss the sampled voice of the little girl that opens the first version. Perhaps it would have been more interesting if they had kept some of the electronic versions along side of the rerecordings. I heard the rerecorded version first and I immediately assumed that all of the lyrics were ironic, if not playfully menacing.

theodore fogelsanger, Thursday, 17 April 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want to hear Chad Hugo's influence as a producer, check out "New Sacred Cow" by Kenna, which has been eBay available since the tail end of 2001. It's a great record that has yet to be released, although Sony has it on their schedule for late May/early June. Hearing Kenna's stuff lets you know that Hugo is quite active in the "Neptunes Sound." However, Pharrell is the one who my girlfriend showed her breasts to -- long story -- so never underestimate the power of "the sexy," I guess.

Erick H (Erick H), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus, people were asking for the kenna album when I still worked at a record store (2001) - it's still not out?

and, ahem, you must tell that story

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Well...the truncated version is that Pharrell heads up her "list" -- the list of "I'd-screw-that-famous-person-if-I-had-the-chance" that couples comfortable in their relationship all have -- so when we talked to Pharrell after a NERD show, she gave him a lil' show. I didn't pay much attention at the time, considering that (A) I'd seen her breasts before and (B) I was chatting up Kelis, who is even hotter in person than in the videos. I mean, a fella's gotta have his list, too.

And as far as Kenna goes, Universal really screwed him over...people actually wanted the record when "Hell-Bent" was receiving MTV airplay, but they lost that juice real fast. I always hate seeing majors do that to cool records, but the Kenna fiasco seemed especially egregious. What a bummer.

Erick H (Erick H), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that whole Kenna situation is a bummer. didn't he switch labels recently? if it ever comes out, i'll definitely buy it. Chad came hard with those beats, seriously. as for Pharrell being the public face, i'd imagine that's just their personality types. one wants to be out front, the other's happy staying on the low.

but yeah, Pharrell's video ubuiquity may soon eclipse that of Puffy circa '97. but eh, i got no beef, let him do his thing. i have to admire anyone who can get on MTV looking as dorky as he does in the "Excuse Me Miss" video.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Pharrell is the Phil Spector of the early 21st century.

Neptune, aka Equester 808, "Complete Ocean King", Thursday, 17 April 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

re: pharrell williams' oft-mentioned dork-factor, here's a statement from the nerd www.

We call ourselves N*E*R*D because we have a different view of life. A nerd is someone who wants to be cool to everybody but it's not his fault he's witty and smart and his social skills aren't the best. If you ever listen to a nerd speak about their experiences in high school, they tell an ill story. They have an ill perspective because of the shit they've been through. You ask the average person, the kind of people that would tease nerds in high school, you ask them what their life is like and they'll give this bullshit, lame boring ass story you'll snore to. I don't mind being called a nerd. We are the people who are proud of being smart, being witty and being clever when everyone else doesn't understand. That's what we do, that's the flag we're raising and waving.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone else think the production on the snoop track is zzzz?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

'excuse me miss' sucks bad too

d k (d k), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"beautiful" doesn't really grab me by the wang like some of their other stuff but i like it ok, i guess.

i feel pretty ehhh about "excuse me miss" on the other hand.

and only partly due to my preference for snoop over jay-z.

i can't even remember what "excuse me miss" sounds like in fact, and i've surely heard it fifteen or twenty times.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like "excuse me" plenty -- it sounds so smoov and I love the swooping synth thing -- it's like joy division's Atmosphere but sexy.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 17 April 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Over-exposure maybe, but Pharrell must have a sense of humor about it seeing him like a winking lounge singer in the new Jay-Z video. I'd rather see his mug than most others on the video channels.

In all interviews, the Neptunes stress that they both work equally on the productions. I don't think Pharrell's visibility should be interpreted like he either does everything or that lets Chad Hugo do all the "real work".

Kenna was signed to Flip Records, Lim Bikzit's Interscope-affiliated label...

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 17 April 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with Sterling re 'Excuse Me Miss'

thing is its hard to imagine Pharrell having all this time to appear in so many videos AND work in the studio as much as Chad Hugo (just like with uber-posers Puff and Dre)...but his influence is obviously there in everything they do

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 April 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i read somewhere that chad does the beats and arrangements and pharell does melodies and choruses (which are admittedly the two parts that make the difference between a good neptunes track and a great one).

edward (big E.D), Thursday, 17 April 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

that bloke's got a wonky mouth.

piscesboy, Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

did you notice that on Justin Timberlake's 'Last Night' there's a little music-box/xylophonic melody that is basically just 'Do the Hustle'?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the deal with the two nike adverts soundtracked by nerd? are these new and unreleased songs?

ss, Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh i think Nike commissioned them especially - there's a third one now too, the frisbee one

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

t's like joy division's Atmosphere but
sexy.

DIE, BLASPHEMER, DIE!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't roll a blunt to Joy Division

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I read somewhere that chad does the beats and arrangements and pharell does melodies and choruses

I've interviewed N*E*R*D twice and on both occasions they explicitly denied this. The Nike song is downloadable from Nikefreestyle.com last time I checked.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Excuse me miss rubbed me the wrong way intitially but now I think it's tops. It's all about the bass drum.

theodore fogelsanger, Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

all their contributions to the Blueprint2 were shockingly mediocre (although "Fuck All Nite" has a great chorus and the goofiness of the beat is endearing). the new beat they did for the "Excuse Me Miss" remix is a little better, though. "Nothin'" type drums and some nasty fuzz synths.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Half of the Neptunes recent output is mediocre at best. For example:

Their recent Jay-Z stuff (not including 'Nigga Please')
Busta Rhymes: Call The Ambulance
The recent Snoop stuff (Title track OK, but not a Snoop track for sure)
Their song on the Sean Paul album
Their song on the Common album

... i could go un forever ...

Of course, the Clipse stuff, the Miss Jade song, Hot In Herre, their Justin stuff et al is undeniably OTM. I just guess that this is how it works with these guys. Prince's output had that dicotomy as well. He did pretty well, too.

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fuck All Nite" and especially "Nigga Please" are both great - the latter is seriously *beyond* brilliant. And I love "Call The Ambulance" too - one of the few good songs on the new Busta, surely?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 20 April 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing i love most about 'nigga please'?

"...it's too late for that"

Chip Morningstar (bob), Sunday, 20 April 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

naw, the best bit is the bass trampoline underneath "that chick - that's me, that six - that's me, that boat - i had it on the mediterranean sea".

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 20 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the neptunes arent dead yet.

also: is "p" really a word?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

you know what.....

shutthefuckup (said really fast and angrily)

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nigga Please great though it is, just sounds like a re-rub of Busta's 'As I Come Back'

ss, Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Busta's 'As I Come Back'

which is k-quality!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a Meet the Neptunes segment on Extra last night. (I was sick, okay?) It was incredibly boring -- they asked them about the people they've worked with and (amazingly!) got responses like "Yes, Britney's very nice, and very hard-working." The best one was Janet Jackson:

PHARRELL: I just love her tone, she has the greatest voice.
CHAD (dreamily): And she looks good.

That was the only thing Chad said the whole time.

nabisco (nabisco), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

NB "Beautiful" still sounds like a half-formed attempt at something for the Timberlake record that they scrapped and then wound up kicking to Snoop. I still like it, though.

nabisco (nabisco), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

From The Chuch to Da Palace = k-classic!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the Neptunes special on MTV UK's Late Lick was pretty cool - Chad said nothing but Pharrel just wouldnt stop talking about how me wanted Mystikal to be more like James Brown, how Michael Jackson harmonies are better than sex, the usual NERD philosophy schtick and how Justin is the new superstar - coolness

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Obv. it shouldn't be surprising that Pharrell would be spot on re: Mystikal considering the tracks they've done together, but it still somehow thrills me to know he's said it out load.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Pharrell did seem like a nice guy on The Late Lick that time, very much otm about lots of types of music, and one of the most articulate people I've seen interviewed in ages.

I like the new Snoop song, I don't think I love or understand hiphop enough to comment on stuff like "Nigga Please", I think it's a great track and can see it's a great track but I still don't enjoy listening to it.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

he's said it out load

I just like the way this phrase looks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i like pharrel, a lot style and talent, if not on the top on the up and up in hip hop, please check out some cool hip hope esque gear at www.thehundreds.com

mack v hundreds, Tuesday, 22 July 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Neptunes song on the Sean Paul record might be the WORST SONG ON IT. (I admit this may be down to the genius of Sean Paul and not any fault of Pharrel's; however the flip side of this is that if the Neps can make even Sean-Paul sound bad then sheeeit.)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha!

If he's still capable of stuff like the 702 single I don't care if he's overexposed.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

which? "star"?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

poor chad :,,,(

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Still Love You" -- sorry, should have been more specific.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Williams has been all over the place in the past couple of years, but I can't really blame him. He's working in pop music — he might be a has-been in two or three years, given its transient nature. He looks like he's just enjoying the ride. His overexposure may very well contribute to an eventual backlash, but he'll be able to look back and know he owned early 21st century pop music. I cut him slack.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how I've heard so many people call him "the rap star that all the white rap-rockers wish they could be" when he's never once rapped on anything!

I like that one Common song he did where he sounds like Tom Waits dueting with Kool Keith.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, so actually Pharrell does rap in one song, ironically it just happens to be in a song whose lyrical intention is to make fun of white rap-rockers.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

he also raps in the remix of "cot damn" and on nore's "grimy". i really felt sorry for chad when i was reading jay's thank-yous from blueprint 2. he says something like "timbo - you're the king, pharrel - you're a genius" and doesn't even mention chad at all. what does he actually do?

sean g, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

He also dropped a verse on Kelis' 'Roller Rink', sounding suspiciously (and eerily in a predicting the future-type way) like Nas.

Which reminds me, the original 'Popular Thug' is sound and anyone who spots a vinyl copy of Wanderland in London should tell me rightaway.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i really felt sorry for chad

P. Diddy in the thank-yous of Bad Boys II: the Soundtrack: "Pharrell, my favorite producer."

As Chad Hugo said a couple of weeks ago during an interview with, ahem, me: "People need to recognize."

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Proof that Chad is great on his own -- the Kenna album. That thing is a great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone heard the "Neptunes Presents... Clones" album yet?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kenna album is phenomenal. I think it says A LOT the "Freetime" is the worst song on it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

re 'Clones': only the Busta and Pharrell tracks - not bad

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone heard the "Neptunes Presents... Clones" album yet?

Yes. What do you want to know? ;-)

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, just wondering, y'know, what it's like? I like "Frontin'" but I haven't heard any of the others.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The songs i like most on Clones... are the more straight-up grimy bangers like the cnn song, delinquent and the cot damn remix. it's kind of split into that category and the crazy space-hop 'idm influence' songs like light yr ass on fire and this beat is hot. this beat is hot is very very good mind, totally stripped down thread-bare beat with nothing other than backward paul rever style snare hits going on. i love roscoe p coldchain, he reminds me of scarface and has an interesting loveable-thug persona. the reason i prefer the more straightforward songs over the more sonically challenging ones is that they allow more room for neptune's amazing sense of melody and composition. the best song is undoubtedly milkshake by kelis. a stupid nursery rhyme chorus about either her tits or blowjobs over a huge sub-bassline and fat rimshots. kelis just slinks over the b-line which takes a surprising chord change towards the end. the spymob ft. foxxy brown song is kinda danchally like bellydancer or bubble. it's the song you're most excited to hear but it's not as interesting as either.

sean g, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I didn't know "Milkshake" was on this. That is a great track.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the best song is easily Supercat + Foxy Brown, Don of Dons!

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

woah i said 'more' quite often in that post

sean g, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

and i meant supercat not spymob!

sean g, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, meant ft. Jadakiss... I haven't heard the new ones they added, mind you.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the new roscoe p coldchain track on clones is really shit. awful beat, and nearly everything i liked about the guy on delinquent (why isn't this on there anyway?) was taken away.

adam west (adamwest), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot about popular thug. dont think i like it that much mainly because it reminds me of that alcopop advert on tv, the "JUICE! I NEED JUICE!" one.

sean g, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds awesome, JoB.

Larcole (Nicole), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Check yer e-mail, Larcole.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

it's pretty mediocre, but then again, the title of the thread sez it all for me.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, no matter what ya'll say Pharrel's doped up look just makes him more sexy...i can't wait to get my hands on him...i mean the new album...

Angeleen Engelsman, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm very disappointed "Milkshake" isn't on this, as it sounds great, and in the current issue of Tense magazine (I think) Chad does a run through of "Clones" tracks, including "Milkshake". Is there a new Kelis album on the way? Is it totally Neps-produced?

Also, is "Popular Thug" the same "Popular Thug" that appeared on her "Wanderland", with a different rapper? I'm guessing it is.

Nick H, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a new Kelis album on the way?

Yes, Tasty, scheduled for October 6 on Virgin Records.

Is it totally Neps-produced?

Apparently not.

is "Popular Thug" the same "Popular Thug" that appeared on her "Wanderland", with a different rapper?

Yes, with Nas.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello C. has a nice write-up of Clones on his blog.

"But, were you standing in a street surrounded by record shops right this second, you should purchase The Neptunes Present The Clones before considering, or doing, anything else."

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

christ why is everyone jizzing themsleves so hard over this record? it's not that good. "frontin'" is easily the worst thing they've ever been involved with, not counting the janes addicition guy. it sounds like a k records band trying to cover the isley brothers (with better backing, of course.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

although a new kelis album makes me happier than words can say.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha christ, i'm listening to it now, and he really does sound like the guy from the make-up or something. his voice is terrible on this.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

though i do love the idea that jigga flubbed pharrel's name in the studio and then instantly came up with the "i call you phareal cuz you're the truth" line to cover his ass. can the man do no wrong?

"good girl" is total rubbish...like the dregs of circa 2001 pop/r&b radio or one of those godawful british girlpop bands that never make it over here. (or kelly clarkson, ha ha.)

and the two "rock tracks" in the middle are amazingly bad, even for modern pop-rock.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

though i think luda could rock over the swans or something and he'd still sound invincible.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the odb track is hot, but it sounds like pete rock! or pete rock records fed into a supercomputer and then reassembled, more accurately.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the jada/supercat track is amazingly feeble, like the changed the setting on their "old school swing" filter from "the JB's" to "prince jammy".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ha fuck i'll probably end up loving this all in a week, but i'm sticking to these opinions in print.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Frontin' may be my favorite single so far this year, so I just can't relate to where Strongo is coming from at all on this.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Girl = Neptunes/Jam & Lewis late '80s crossbred production (sounds like it was written for Janet). I find it endearing.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very unlikely that Jay-Z would accidentally mispronounce Pharrell's name considering how long they've worked together. I don't think that Pharrell's singing is terrible - I'd say it's resoundingly average. But the nice thing is that Pharrell knows he's not blessed with great vocal chops, so he doesn't try to beat us over the head with melismatic swoops and technical showoffery. His singing is just as good as it needs to be. And with a backing track that good - let's face it - you could have Deputy Dog singing over it and it would still be a hit.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i like pharrel's singing, male falsetto is always good especially if it's as forced and free of histrionics as his. but i agree clones is pretty underwhelming, especially if you consider some of the amazing tunes they've produced this year like senorita, what happened to that boy, milkshake, bellydancer and the cnn tune. i think it's just too muddled, the clipse album and what i've heard of the roscoe p mixtape are varied sonically but are more appealing as a whole than clones.

sean g, Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone actually bought the cd yet? would it b worth my while gett'n it?

Angeleen Engelsman (Angeleen Engelsman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

god i love frontin'. the bit with the sharp intake of breath and "yeah yeah" just all whispered. and the audience/nonchalant/shawty/naughty on rhyme thing in the jay-z verse is magic.

and how sweet and hottt he is when he's just like "i was gonna tear/your ass up" and how the bass just creeps in at the end.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed. I think Pharrell's voice is all the more charming because of its flaws, if he sounded too smooth or perfect the song wouldn't be as affecting.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yet no one is telling me more about the actual cd... i love the sexy/cute/naughty/playful lyrics of frontin' too but is the cd a one hit wonder?

the best beat is roscoe's "hot". but that was the hottest beat nearly a year ago when it was skillz "v.a. banger."

the snoop track sounds like an outtake from the last record.

the busta track is hardly as apocalyptic as people are making it out to be.

at least two tracks appeared somehwere else already (at least directly, ha ha): "hot damn" on the clipse record and "popular thug" way back in 2001. there doesn't seem to be any surface difference other than the vocal tracks. (and the spelling on "hot damn.")

nancy thought the n.e.r.d. track was a bootleg when clipse came in.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

and sean is right: none of the neptunes best beats from 2003 are anywhere near this record. "belly dance", "milkshake", "star" and the other 702 track.

the busta track is minimal-unto-not-existing which will make everyone who cares about such things shit their pants with glee but not as minimal as "as i come back" with that fucking monstrous wall of bass distortion that seems to descend on you like a falling ceiling in an indian jones movie.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

also, i'd rather have my balls peeled like oversized grapes and wrapped in salt beef before reading anything marcello has to say about hip-hop ever again. he's like the anti-simon reynolds and it's just as bad if not worse.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkingballs (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

frontin ain't great, milkshake's alright, the least interesting kelis single thus far, but at least it's pressed in the belly dancer mould, which itself grew off me quicker than i expected (though if it starts getting club play over here i'll flip for it again easy), light your ass.. has flange and pingy sounds and really isn't all that weird. popular thug was cool when it was a semi-obscurity, so you could quote that "makes my records skip" line (think of it - glitch may yet have a glorious future, rescued from the spastic twitches of stuttering nerds and made to speak for the ecstastic quivers of hearts-aflutter lovers. what was i talking about again?)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone in the NY area, Pharrell is in the studio on Hot 97 right now. Well, they're going to do the drive-time hour right now, but he's supposed to be back from 6 to 7. Then apparently he's doing a Tower in-store at 7 - I'm not sure which Tower it is. The DJ asked him what "milkshake" means in the Kelis song, and Pharrell said, "Oh that's about tits." Apparently, he wasn't supposed to say "tits" on the air.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The drive-time hour is turning into a Clones sampler - they're playing the Snoop track right now.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Angeleen Engelsman (Angeleen Engelsman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

haven't heard the disc yet (oh that title! why?) but frontin' finally won me over. i like that pharrell has no range yet this doesn't stop him from singing, and he's not so terrible that it sounds better the louder you turn it up.

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oh but that stupid guitar sound is technically fine but is the same damn thing that was all over the nerd record. c'mon guys, i know you can afford a different pedal or a new guitar or something.

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll take kanye west's "i'm good" as my mixtape for the remainder of the summer and just get my neps fix off the radio, probably.

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah kayne's probably got even less of a range than the neps do at the end of the day, but i'm not indeminified to his attacks yet.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

don't hate them for using fucked up resources and still getting airplay with it...

Angeleen Engelsman (Angeleen Engelsman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i think kanye has the (temporary) advantage for me in that my pleasure receptors were programmed on east coast hip hop in the late 80's and early 90's, which is pretty much what he's doing. he's also not afraid of fulsomeness, like how he just backs up the dumptruck of sound and unloads on kweli's "get by."

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

plus he SAMPLES chaka khan and phil collins whereas the neps would just quote them and have pharrel do the phil collins bit, which is really refreshing for some reason.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't hate on EITHER approach where phil collins is involved

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Angeleen Engelsman (Angeleen Engelsman), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

what's up w/ marcello w.r.t. the "rock" tracks???

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

alot of the tracks seem very pressure intensive, without ever really going off as they might. There's not really enough party tracks on it, it's all just bangers really with the odd ballad thrown in. That said it's still pretty cool. I love the 303 on the first clipse song, keep expecting it to turn into Higher State of Consciousness.

Roscoe seems very good yes, I also thought Boo-Bonic's verse was impressive.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Who on earth decided that Fam-Lay track needed an embarassing Britpop slant to it? God, I can hear Damon Albarn creaming himself at this moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I fucked up, I meant the NERD track.

Fam-Lay is easily the best thing on this CD so far... that or the first Clipse one. Totally with Ronan on the 303 noises.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever happened to not wiling out and not being violent

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Blaze Of Glory = Follow The Leader without that big panning echoey noise.

The last four tracks totally redeem this record... it's weird... there's nothing really BAD on here (apart from the two rock songs) but a lot of it is kinda meh.

I'm sure I'll love it in a week.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Another idea, does anyone reckon the concept of minimalism is just a bit of an easy route to being original in this case? I mean the Busta track isn't really fantastic, minimal? His fucking rhymes are minimal, it works just about but does he ever have anything to say?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Reds Vs DJ Skribble from Stanton Warriors was surely testament to the fact that Busta should be guesting on dance records where rhythmic prowess is more important than lyrics and he can just spit more stuff like "wreckin every record, rhyme after rhyme, all we want to know is your zodiac sign" etc etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That approach has led to some REALLY piss-poor dance collaborations though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I'm sure, the less the better really, but maybe Busta could do some more.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a bit more like a garage mc aswell isn't he?

Busta and Wiley-Stop Rapping Wiley.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

busta is the perfect content-free mc. he's a complete cipher and that's completely ok. he gets by on energy and the pure sonics of his voice alone. which, now that i think about it, makes the neps connection make even more sense.

rob geary (rgeary), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He does occassionally have something to say; check the "Get By" remix. But I'm starting to get really, really tired of him in general. Maybe it's all the mugging in the videos. "Light Your Ass on Fire" sounds much better on the radio than it does on the CD for some reason.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah in fairness it does probably work, I listened again yesterday. It's all very RZA in places, the darker Neps stuff.

and without sounding shallow and devoid of all respect for the actually music the reason you dont see anything of chad is because he is ugly and therefore unmarketable in a PR sense, sorry but the truth hurts. thats not to say that he is immensely talented though

wot r u lot on? Dont let jealousy blind u from the fact that the man is the most talked about producer there is! Apart from that he sings hooks & features in videos, the mans a legend!
The only reason he is in all of these videos is because along with
Chad he churns out the hits which he features on?? where is the problem with that??
I hear they knock out 6 tunes per day! Now with a prolific tally like that he's gonna be on a few videos!!!!

I think Pharrel and Chad are great producers and there differet styles make them good together besides Timbaland nobody can touch there beats its great for hip-hop and pop music to have the neptunes throw there unique style in songs and albums at least 1 of them will be around for awhile if not both. Holla Back!!!! Lance a.k.a future producer.

Lance Williams, Friday, 26 December 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!..>ALL ya Idiotic Fools who are sittn there judging and picking at Pharrell should jus get over yourselves! Not a single one of yaz could do the genius work Pharrell does even if ur lives depended on it! And this whole 'overexposure' thing is bullcrap. Pharrell workz damn hard makin other ppl sound and look good, so the exposure he getz for himself is more then deserved. Pharrell and Chad are a phenomonal team who also happen to be the greatest of friends. They never take each other for granted and always apreciate what each do.. so i dont see why itz so hard for y'all to stop bein so arrogant and do that too.

SarahCphDk, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing I've never completely understoof, after listening to people like (early) RZA, (early) Timbaland, Organized Noise (did Outkast/Goodie Mobb etc)...why do so many people think his/their production is innovative? It's pretty obvious kick-kick-twang beat patterns, with carefully edited guitars and a falsetto on the chorus. Is it "innovative" cos it's so clean. It's good to dance to, but I don't get blown away listening to it in other situations, and neither does anyone else I know.
Is this just an example of non hip-hop critics finding a "way in" to hip hop?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, this is a very interesting question! I will not let it die. Anyone want to take a stab at it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i kinda like N*E*R*D* KINDA is the key word

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Thursday, 22 January 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

N*E*R*D is the part of the Neptunes I like least. All their production jobs, even if they sound incredibly similar to their previous works, kill the dancefloor, far more than those mentioned, who seem to be more about being listened to than being danced to.

As to whether they're innovative, I'll leave that who know more about this kind of thing.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 22 January 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I just think it's become one of those lazy, self-perpetuating music crit cliches. It fits nicely into the (false) idea that mainstream hip hop is now more innovative than the underground. People who write this seem to take pleasure in their own newfound revelling-in-popness.

Ahhh, and isn't THAT an indication of qualiity.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but he really just wants to listen to Burt Bacharach anyway.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course. Didn't you ever see the Mr. Show sketch in which they explain how one's intelligence is directly proportional to the amount of money one makes?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be interested to test this. OK, so Pharrell earns millions per year, but so do we if we pool our resources. How many regulars are there on ILX? 100? 200? That's a lot of income.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, we have more bitches.

Playa Hata, Friday, 13 February 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I know you guys aren't obsessed with N.E.R.D.
but I need the answer to the following question...
( A dutch radiostation offers tickets to the NERD-show
in Amsterdam if I get the following question right)

this is the question:
but does anybody know what kind of music
Pharrel likes to listen to while receiving fellatio?

it IS a stupid question, I know, but maybe
somebody can help me out!

erick de jong, Friday, 20 February 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a big piece on Pharrell in today's Guardian if anyone's the remotest bit interested

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 20 February 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Pharrel likes to listen to while receiving fellatio?

Probably his own.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Erick, try Stereolab as an answer (in all seriousness). Love the Dutch for asking.

I think that all of you hatters are just jellous

House of! Jellous Hatters!

Barima (Barima), Friday, 20 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I think that everyone that hates on Pharrell is jealous of his talent, success, and good looks.....as for you, Pharrell, keep doing what you do!!!! I love you!!!!

Christy, Saturday, 20 March 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"everyone"

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 March 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the rock out versions of lapdance an rockstar personally, jus good bass n drum to go with. an the neptunes gotta b good if everyone is hiring them to do their producing so u gotta cut them some slack and the thing that matters the most is....theyre stinking rich!

joe the human beatbox, Friday, 26 March 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see you riding on Warren Buffett's jock.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 March 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think its stupid the way Pharrel only ever talks about "buying the new album" and "that new album came out last tuesday" its like dhut the fuck up and rock out man and stop ruining it

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 26 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 26 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
I know Pharrell and I would say the "over-exposure" has come about due to the problems of his Startrak label's albums ALL getting pushed back to later and later dates, his "Dude... We're Going To Rio" DVD not coming out yet, the damage between he and Kelis as of late, and problems securing a safe haven for his creativity. So don't hate too much he's just a normal guy who works hard for his fucking money. I saw him last night and talked to him and he was so fucking tired we didn't get to hang out. He's always pushing pushing pushing and he doesn't stop moving or all his endevors would disappear and he would be used constantly. So it's not over exposure it's preservation. Give him a break and buy Fly or Die if you've only downloaded it please. Tks... DJ Patchwork

I thought this thread said "Pharrel Williams Overature"

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 10 April 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I can truly appreciate the beats of the neptunes and expected to hear just as enjoyable music when I went to see N.E.R.D. in concert. Instead I got terrible lyrics, and Pharrell thinking he is the next coming. I felt like i was at a Bobby Brown concert in 1988. N.E.R.D. definatley needs more work on the lyrics and performing and less effort in the swoon dept.

I felt like i was at a Bobby Brown concert in 1988

Wow...that's harsher than anything I could ever come up with.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

heard from a friend that N.E.R.D's comin' over to asia next month and have a gig there (TOKYO to be precise) does anyone know more details on that?

aic, Thursday, 15 April 2004 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Most people that I know don't like him. They don't like him because of his voice (they say he sounds like a girl). They also say he doesn't have enough pimp.To me he doesn't need pimp.He has the looks and the voice.I'd do anything to meet him.
P.S.-Does anybody know where he is or will be next?

Nyla Goodson, Friday, 23 April 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

He is pimping my ride next week.

His new label is called Ice Cream? Or does Star Trak have its own ice cream now? Cuz I'd totally buy that. I could put some pimp juice on it and then listen to "Hot In Herre", OMG.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

This just in - Pharrell likes touching his chin.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck pharrell and his non singing self. hes the worst singer ive ever heard in my fucking life. even worse than andre 3000.

And yes, I really miss 2002.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ice Cream is his shoe brand. hence when he says "see these Ice Creams" in the Snoop video and it cuts to a close-up of his shoe.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 18 November 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah, shoes. Humbug.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 18 November 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The 'Ice Creams' are pretty ugly. Pharrell's clothing label is actually called 'Billionaire Boys Club' and from what I've seen it won't be amazing. Mostly apeing off A Bathing Ape...

If I'm reading this right, there is a Pharrell solo album ready (even though, when Frontin' was a hit, he said he would never do one).

And I may be a Pharrell apologist, but "Exclusive Jam" (what a title!) by N*E*R*D on the new Gilles Peterson Presents the BBC Sessions double CD is possibly the worst thing I've heard this year. It goes on and on and the singing is terrible! I can't believe either party wanted to release this utter dud.

what are you fuckers talking about? are you kids on drugs or something. and if you hate pharrel so much what are you doing on his site? all of you haters must be white or something.fuck this shit!do you realy think pharrel cares if some "kids" don't like his music

RENDANI "MO", Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

are you kids on drugs or something.

well yeah, obviously: it totally intensifies the vivid-ass appeal of it.

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

what are you doing on his site?

Haha maybe this explains ILM's love for the neptunes...they run ilm.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

Is it okay if I consider this statement amazing?

I have to say I'm upset, because I saw this thread in New Answers and I assumed a release date had been announced or something. Booooo.
