I want to own at least one Rolling Stones album before I die. Considering I enjoy the following:

Beach Boys: Smiley Smile
Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour
Bob Dylan: Desire
Captain Beefheart: Troutmaskreplica
The Paragons: My Best Girl Wears My Crown
Black Sabbath: Black Sabbath
King Crimson: Red

what do you think I should discover first?

When this is answered, you must ask a similar question: Go!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on this, I'd go for Beggars Banquet or Let It Bleed. You get a wide spectrum there ("get the remasters!" says pedant Nordicskillz). If you still have to get these, your life is about to get so coooooool.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

My turn?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yup!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

ar a completely underappreciated (preferably modern) pyschedelic gem. Something very expansive, that takes work to get into. This is what I have been listening to in my search:

Acid Mothers Temple-Pataphysical Freak out, etc.
Flaming Lips-The Soft Bulletin (for the sounds, rather than the melodies)
Rovo-Imago
Manitoba-Up In Flames
PATE-Mo Psycho

I basically want something with interesting sounds, and a little more challenging than some of the stuff above, Acid Mothers without the fear, maybe?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

you may have it already, but Butthole surfers - "Locust abortion technician"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that familiar with everything on the list, but:

Air - 10,000hz the Legend
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Barafundle / An introduction to... / 20
Fourtet - Pause
Schneider TM - Zoomer
Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

meh, not too sure though

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

you may have it already, but Butthole surfers - "Locust abortion technician"

I do. haven't listened to it in ages, though.

Dog Latin, I've never heard of those last two - what are they?

Kilian - your turn, then!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

nordicskillz - heheh - they're more metal than anything else. The Arcturus album is very psychedelic though - all epic asian wailing and weird instruments. I prefer "The Sham Mirrors" as an album but if it's psychedelia you're after, i'd suggest you give it a go.

Electric Wizard is doom/stoner stuff. Probably not what you're looking for at all actually.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

well, someone else if not killian?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Air - 10,000hz the Legend

for an idea of their current direction maybe yes but this is probably their worst album thus far, inlcuding The Virgin Suicides soundtrack.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's severely underrated, stevem! Virgin Suicides is pretty crap, though.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, i really like it. probably even more than moon safari. i liked it because moon safari still feels like a safely trendy chill-out album while 10,000hz is just mental and silly.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

actually yeh i think overall 10khz is no better or worse than their other albums. but there was nothing on it quite as good as 'le soleil est pres de moi' or 'la femme d'argent'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed. The contrariness (compared to Moon Safari) of it is just attractive to me somehow, rather than the music itself.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Acid Mothers Temple-Pataphysical Freak out, etc.
Flaming Lips-The Soft Bulletin (for the sounds, rather than the melodies)
Rovo-Imago
Manitoba-Up In Flames
PATE-Mo Psycho

You might like: Parson Sound, Can's Tago Mago, recent Boredoms, Agitation Free's Malesch, the first two Kraftwerk records, Faust's 71 Minutes

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks!-I have the recent Boredoms and the Can, but what's Parson Sound?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Parson Sound was an incredible psyche/drone band from Sweden from the late 60s. Precursor to Acid Mothers in a big way, but also related to concurrent American scene of bands including Velvet Underground, and even some of the minimalist drone stuff of Tony Conrad. Members went on to form another great Swedish band called Trad Gras Och Stenar.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz; try Ege Bamyasi or Future Days by Can, Come Here When You Sleepwalk by Clue To Kalo, Hex by Bark Psychosis, In Sides by Orbital... My mind is in a shocking state at the moment, but try those.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, if you're into hip hop than maybe The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox might be up your street, or Fantastic Damage by El-P (or the instrumental versions of either). Challenging psychedelic hip hop. Very good.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Best thread evah! Thanks, guys.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone else now-I like this game.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(hi nordic) this thread is a great idea! hats off to the dog.

I don't own any dancemuzik (not really), considering I love:

Can - Tago Mago
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
Feelies - Crazy Rhythms
Modest Mouse - the Lonesome Crowded West
La Düsseldorf - Viva
16 Horsepower - Sackcloth 'n' Ashes

(i do dance to these records, though!)
what dance should I discover first?

willem (willem), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Can - Future Days. Captures a lot of the band's essence without scaring the hell out of you the way Tago Mago might.

Elvis Costello - This Year's Model. Forget about the borderline-tweeness of My Aim is True, and forget about the Cute Hitler metaphors of Armed Forces. This one gets everything right. His only great album.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

willem - how about Daft Punk - Discovery

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

dog latin - thanx, but from what i heard: meh. i only liked the van halen-like casio-solo's... (i may just be the personification of "rockist", but hey, that's why i asked for dance: new paths to walk/ways to discover etc.)

willem (willem), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Willem - try Brown by Orbital.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Willem -

Early- A Certain Ratio
Can't help but think "Remain in Light" also, which you probably already own.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Willem - the casiotone solos were the reasons i recommended that album lol!

You could do worse than pick one of the many Fabric or Fabriclive compilations as they all seem to represent a different style of dance on each one. I've been digging the Radioactive Man compilation for some time now and I'm still not bored of it.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz, i think you're after Fushitsusha's Double Live lp (PSF 15/16). I'm not sure exactly when it came out ('89?) so it might not be modern enough, but a few regulars on here have called it a modern masterpiece and I can only agree. Very hard to find though as it's probably only Japanese import, but it's pretty essential, definitely unerappreciated psyche noise stuff.

Sorry to interrupt..

ss, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I rate *NSync, Harry Pussy, El-P, Fleetwood Mac and Nick Drake highly. I doubt Amazon.com could help me out here.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I am horribly not hip to hip hop. I try, but mostly rely on my kid brother for recommendations. He's gone away now.
Here are some things that I've liked lately.

Antipop Consortium - Arryhthmia
Talib Kweli - Quality
Pocket Dwellers - Digitally Organic
RJD2 - that newish one
Mix Master Mike - Spin Psycle
k-os - the Exit

some things that I've been told I should like, but didn't:
Roots
Common
El-P
Jurassic 5 (actually, I kinda liked it, but they seem to be to rap what Lenny Kravitz is to rock, not necessarily a bad thing, in fact can be a lot of fun, but not all that, or whatever the term currently is)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In a motorik mood:

Can - Monster Movie
Cluster - Zuckerzeit
Harmonia - Deluxe
Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express
La Dusseldorf - La Dusseldorf
Moebius (+ Plank) - Rastakrautpasta
Neu! - Neu 75
Roedelius - Jardin au Fou
Michael Rother - Flammende Herzen

Dadaismus, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, search out anything that Fat Jon produced, esp. his instrumental solo album as Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician ('Wave Motion' I think)
Also, if you're okay w/non-challenging lyrics I'd recommend all of People Under the Stairs albums.
I seem to be recommending KMD in every hip hop thread, so them too.
What didn't you like about El-P? The beats or the lyrics? If it was the lyrics, give Cannibal Ox a go. They are definitely a step up from El-P on the mic, ie they have rhythm and personality.
Also, search out:
Mos Def and Black Star albums
Hieroglyphics--'3rd Eye Vision'
Lootpack--'Soundpices' (beats beats BEATS!)
Peanut Butter Wolf--'My Vinyl Weighs a Ton'
I haven't heard it, but RJD2 produced the majority of Copywrite's 'High Exaulted'

buttch (Oops), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

''Nordicskillz, i think you're after Fushitsusha's Double Live lp (PSF 15/16). heh, don't. PSF 15/16 is a dbl CD. there is another dbl live (PSF 3/4) that first came out as dbl LP in '89 but was reissued as dbl CD in 97/98. I have both dbl CD sets and its best psych I've heard (I have to control myself, I don't want to say its the greatest thing ever released).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, something on these lines...

the orb- uf orb
susuma yokota - sakura
autechre - incunabula
spiritualized - laser guided melodies
yo la tengo - i can hear the heart beating as one
massive attack - mezzanine

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

horace-try and get the first wu-tang album,it should be on mid price and right up your street...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

killian-i'd recommend little lost soul by third eye foundation

also,i got a sampler for leaf records in tower a while ago for a fiver
its called lost for words, and has (as well as yokota) great tracks by murcof and manitoba, both of which you might like

robin (robin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

and gorecki's third symphony, which you can get on naxos for about a fiver as well...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, again I'm going to recommend a compilation. Some of the best and up-to-date hiphop comps you can buy are the Badmeaningood series. I think they're up to number three now but the first mix by Skitz is absolutely essential listening. Also - Roots Manuva, New Flesh and all that Big Dada stuff is pretty ace.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

rec·om·mend

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Man i just typed in a big long rply to killian but it got ate.

Anyway, I'd try Avery tare and Panda Bear's 'Spirit They've Gone Spirit They've Vanished' if you're after indie vocals over big trance-like washes of synth and little glitches and ticks.

ss, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

as for me,i'd like to hear something similar to jazz suite no.2 by shostakvich, and i'd like to know about alice coltrane

(been listening to a lot of mingus and some other jazz, for some reason i have it in my head that i'd like alice coltrane,i must have heard something somewhere...)

robin (robin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

also,i have the most recent johnny cash album, live at san quentin, and a cheap compilation-what next?

robin (robin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Killian - do you have "Trainer" by Plaid? Also you might like Nobukazu Takemura.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, where should I start with classic rock from 1969-mid 70's, especially riff heavy stuff like the Who and Led Zeppelin? Bearing in mind i like: Queen, the Beatles, Ruins, Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, Can, Boredoms, 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' and lots of 60's garage/psych bands.

ss, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

dog latin!: i went home after my last post and somehow found my way to a 2nd hand recordshop... i came across a cheap Discovery cd and thought "What the heck"... Just listened to it and: you were right! I do like this! Should probably have listened better when it came out (was a bit dissapointed after loving the singles off "homework") I also came across Radioactive man (read your recommendation just now) but didn't buy it as i suddenly remembered several people drooling all over Fabric09 and went on looking for that one (wasn't there). but thanks i will keep an eye out for Radioactive Man (great name!)

Nick - thanks, I've heard some Orbital at a party of a former roommate and liked what I heard, so...

dave225 - I don't know any "A Certain Ratio" what's it like? And yes, I do know the greatgreat "Remain in Light" (as I own every single regular Talking Heads album except that one with the song that gave Yorke&co their name)

this IS a great thread. will try to help others as i get back later...

willem (willem), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, where should I start with classic rock from 1969-mid 70's, especially riff heavy stuff like the Who and Led Zeppelin? Bearing in mind i like: Queen, the Beatles, Ruins, Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, Can, Boredoms, 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' and lots of 60's garage/psych bands.

You might check early Sabbath, early Blue Oyster Cult, Jethro Tull, Raspberries, Thunderclap Newman. Non-"classic rock" bands that you might also dig from the same ballpark would be Amon Duul II and Les Rallizes Denudes.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks. I want real riff heavy stuff with lyrics about women and evil wizards. Can you recommend any specific records?

ss, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Uriah Heep's Demons & Wizards may be just what you're looking for.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Recommend me anything at all based on this cross-section:

Mellow Candle - Swaddling Songs
Fame (OST)
Lene Lovich - Flex
Germs - (MIA) - The Complete Anthology
Bob Dylan - New Morning
Ten Wheel Drive with Genya Ravan - Construction #1
Urge Overkill - Saturation

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Get Budgie's Squawk and the two Sir Lord Baltimore records.

Also Black Sabbath's 1st (UK edition) has lyrics about "evil woman" and "the wizard".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Cross-post; mine was intended for ss.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody Beth, do you like Meat Loaf?

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Willem--I'll second the recommendation for A Certain Ratio's _Early_, based on your list.

Jody Beth, you want a copy of _Lost in the Stars: A Tribute to Kurt Weill_.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

why do you think so, douglas?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

JBR: "writerly," attitudinal, messy, fun. All the records you mention (well the five of them I know, plus I know who Genya Ravan is) have a strong sense of "here is my aesthetic, now EAT IT," but esp. the Dylan and the Germs also have a specificity of authorial intent & subtlety behind the constructed pose. Plus the deliberate all-over-the-placeness of the list: _Lost in the Stars_ is maybe the most stylistically scattered record I know that totally hangs together at every moment. Plus it's great.

how's that? (and do you already know and hate _LitS_ and I'm just barking up the wrong tree?)

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

jody, for some reason lifterpuller popped into my head when i saw your list. you probably know about them already, but if not...

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard stuff from it -- I like Weill fine, but I've never really cared for the Marianne Faithfull/Lou Reed wistful-aging-rocker treatments of those songs.

(And I do like Lifter Puller!)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"here is my aesthetic, now EAT IT"

this is what i want MY autobiography to be called.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

rate *NSync, Harry Pussy, El-P, Fleetwood Mac and Nick Drake highly. I doubt Amazon.com could help me out here.

oh... how about:

-secret mommy "babies that hunt" (nsync x harry pussy x nick drake)
-dalek "from filthy tongues...." (el-p x harry pussy)
-elvish presley/black elf speaks stuff (fleetwood mac x harry pussy x nick drake)
-deerhoof "apple o" (harry pussy x fleetwood mac x nick drake x nsync)
-danielson familie (NSync x Harry Pussy x Nick Drake)

?

to note the complete moronic nature of my breakdown... secret mommy is glitched laptop r&b while danielson familie is funny skronk folk pop... and yet i have called them both "(NSync x Harry Pussy x Nick Drake)"

m.

msp, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"little lost soul by third eye foundation"

I had a track off this on a mag comp which i liked a lot, so this goes on my shopping list. plaid have been recommended to me be quite a few people, so i've often wanted to pick something up by them. Never heard of Nobukazu Takemura.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

actually the Third Eye track i had was off "You Guys Kill Me" but it was still cool...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Beach Boys: Smiley Smile

Hardly anything like in the rest of their catalogue, although "Friends" is probably closer than the rest. "Friends" is considerably more mellow than "Smiley Smile" though.

Obviously, if you like the two singles from "Smiley Smile", then "Pet Sounds" would be a natural buy too.

Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour

"Sgt. Pepper" - no doubt about that.
Everybody who loves 1967 Beatles should absolutely check out The Zombies' "Odessey & Oracle" btw.

Bob Dylan: Desire

"Blood On The Tracks".

Captain Beefheart: Troutmaskreplica

I leave this up to those who actually like that album, and that artist, although I do have the understanding that there is nothing else quite like "Trout Mask Replica" in the rest of his output.

King Crimson: Red

Probably some of their other 70s output, which was kind of more experimental and "jazzy" than their earlier material.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir in not answering the question non-shockah!

man, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never heard you guys kill me,but anything third eye foundation related that i have heard has been great,so it'd probably be as good a bet as any other...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Recommend me some hypnotic/trippy techno/trance/electronica. I like:

AFX - Analogue Bubblebath III
Paul van Dyk - Out There And Back
Underworld - Second Toughest In The Infants

man, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to hijack this thread, but...Julio, is there any place to get hold of this in London? I remember reading a post of yours about them on an AMT thread. I looked for PSF releases, but only found the USA site.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Recommend me stuff. I like Mya, the Names and Djavan Gasparyan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I reckon you should get Laurent Garnier's Laboratoire Mix on React from a few years back, very trippy indeed.

I want to play this game but don't know how.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, I appreciate what you wrote, but it helps to read the question. I already have everything by the Beach Boys and the Beatles and plenty by King Crimson and Blood on the Tracks. I wanted to know about the Stones.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I want something by Can. Grooves and jazziness are good. But I want something that's not too messy or noodly or hippie-ish. (Or put it this way -- not that Geir would like Can, but what Can CD would Geir like best?) Also, two of my favorite bands evah are Stereolab and Sonic Youth.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

re: Can -- grooves & jazziness = Future Days.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

that's sort of what I thought, thanks

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, get Future Days first, then Ege Bamyasi if still interested.

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The Can 2-CD anthology (1968-1993) is a steal (buy.com has it for $15) and is a decent intro (it actually includes almost all of Monster Movie). Well, if you're trying to avoid "messy" and "noodly" then maybe Can aren't for you...but, the anthology abridges some of the longer songs ("Mother Sky" and "Soup" for example), so that may be more palatable to you. It does, however, include "Yoo Doo Right" in its full 20 minute glory.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I've got a good one. A good friend of mine has his 25th birthday next week, and I'm trying to think what CD to get him. Note: he is a classically trained musician, and has several qualifications in music theory. Not that one should equal the other, but he can be very dismissive of music and his tastes are very unpredictable. He says that he "can't take me seriously" when I try to convince him of the worth of Justin Timberlake. He once laughed out loud when I played him "Ruby Tuesday" (the cretin!). The only musical genres that appear to excite him are jazz and hip-hop. He loves John Coltrane, the Gza, Sun Ra, and The Ronettes. He wants to get more into modern African stuff and country music. I want to buy him The Boredoms' "Vision Creation Newsun", but I don't think I should. What should I get him?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Fela muthafuckin' Kuti!

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordic, your friend sounds like the evil (and jazz-loving) version of Rockist Scientist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, that has occurred to me before, actually! :)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but you mean there's more than one person on this planet that would dare to laugh at Ruby Tuesday?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I'll put them in touch.

Does Rockist Scientist have an innate distrust of technology and one aging pair of corduroys?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

He wants to get more into modern African stuff and country music

Get him that brand new King Sunny Ade comp that just came out, Best of the Classic Years, on Shanachie. It's African (duh!) plus the steel guitar sort of links it with country! He'll love it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooops, wait, except that's not "modern" African.

Unless you meant modern as in "not old field recordings of Gambian musicians" or something.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that sounds great, Mr Diamond. I'll check it out right now.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

You can't go wrong with Franco either.

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What goes with:
Toshimaru Nakamura/Sachiko M - Do
Magma - Wurdah Itah
Can - "Chain Reaction/Quantum Physics"
Paul McCartney - those harmonies in the slow part of "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five"
O.Messiaen - Trois Petites Liturgies

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

me.

Simon and Garfunkel - The Sounds of Silence
Nick Drake - Bryter Layter/Five Leaves Left/Pink Moon
Iron and Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle
Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

dleone, that's a pretty tall order! Hoahio, maybe? you've got your harmonies and ambitious, if not quite Magma-tic, arrangements, the sonic palette of do, and a good helping of ethnic forgery thanks to Michiyo's koto.

and Radian's first album is almost onkyofunk, or as close as anyone has come to such. very Can-ny; very "Quantum Physics."

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. - Neil Halstead's Sleeping on Roads falls right between RHP and Drake. no harmonies, alas. and a bit bland. better yet, a Jackie Leven album. the recent Shining Brother, Shining Sister is ace, and as good a place to start as any. dunno how you'll take to the rockabilly tinges, rich, jazzy arrangements, and poetic interludes, but i challenge you to find a more mature cycle of songs poised between Kozelek's confessional and the true-love knot tied in Nick Drake's arbor vines.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Summer, I have Hoahio, but good idea. Maybe think more towards Haco's older band, After Dinner?

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

jody, look into Carol of Harvest. very much like a Lene Lovich-fronted Mellow Candle kicked up with UO-sized guitar bombast. HUGE songs that really wouldn't sound out of place on the Fame OST. they were German, of course. Second Battle reissued their lone (1978, S/T) album, and i love it to death.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

''Sorry to hijack this thread, but...Julio, is there any place to get hold of this in London? I remember reading a post of yours about them on an AMT thread. I looked for PSF releases, but only found the USA site.''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone recommend for the following?

- Justin Timberlake, Justified
- pretty much everything ever by ADULT.
- Max Tundra, M.B.G.A.T.E.
- Schneider TM, Zoomer
- Legowelt
- France Gall
- suddenly taken with radio trance mixes

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

nabisco-Do you know Jimi Tenor?

julio-yes. 'sound 323' is the name of the shop (they have a webpage: google it!). opposite highgate tube station on the nothern line.

North London in decent record shop shockah! I've heard about this place, but I never see it (granted, I only drive by). Thanks.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Also 4 nabisco - "Pause" by Four Tet???

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And maybe R Hide In Plain Site by Romanthony?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabisco-- Ditto on the Four Tet. Do ya have Tok Tok vs. Soffy O?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I'm fucking nuts about Tok Tok vs. Soffy O. (That was such an on-point recommendation that I want more from your direction!)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I can get at Soulseek right now anyway ...

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

chris v = dakota suite - signal hill

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nabisco... how about salako..."reinventing puncuation" specifically... or hollAnd "your orgasm"... perhaps both a little more towards the pop end... but with enough production that laptops and electronics feel a part of it...
m.

msp, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabisco-- Check out the Bergheim 34 MP3 that's up on Gabba.net. I'll try to think of more. My taste has been at the same place lately too.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Got Your Orgasm, usually like it so-so / okay. Is this the same Salako that did Musicality? Cause I only enjoyed maybe two and a half tracks on that, and I'm pretty fond of twee ... did they change massively, or is there another Salako I'm not aware of?

Thanks, Aaron! We need Miranda Splat here, my tastes and hers tend to coincide near-exactly.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i never heard "musicality"... the one i mention was a previous album... more twee psych... which might slide out of the range of the bands you suggest...

you might actually like the secret mommy disc i recommended above... kit clayton put it out on his label...

http://www.musork.com/o_14.html

has some mp3s... i must warn however... i liked the first track the best and the rest of the album didn't quite explode in the same fashion... (i need to revisit it now...)

m.

msp, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Talking Heads, especially Remain in Light. My favorite songs lately are "Under My Thumb" and "Do While". My favorite record so far from 2003 is Lightng Bolt's Wonderful Rainbow. I would like to listen to more metal, noise & ambient. I'd like good pop recommendations, too, but if you're going that route, be very careful of my above likes.

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

POOPS MCGEE!

Please do yourself a favor and give a listen to Hem. http://www.rabbitsongs.com/ will hook you up w/ MP3s. Bring extra tissues.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I'd like to try this out, and what's more with complete randomization based on my five favorite albums of the past few weeks.

Manic Street Preachers - Holy Bible
Magazine - Real Life
David Bowie - Scary Monsters and Super Creeps
Walkmen - Everyone Who Pretended...
Pulp - This is Hardcore

So what do you all suggest?

justin s., Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

How about Black Heart Procession, Justin?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(That's based on the Pulp and Walkmen, mostly: Black Heart Procession 1, 2, or 3 but not so much the last one.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabisco, good call... I've heard one or two BHP songs, based on recommendations from the girlfriend aeons back, but never really dipped into them fully. I'll have to hit Kazaa and see what I think. Thanks for the recommendation!

justin s., Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(No problem -- try "The Old Kind of Summer" and "A Heart the Size of a Horse.")

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Rec's for one who likes
Spacemen 3-Playing with Fire
Jesus Christ Superstar OST
John Fahey- Blind Joe Death
Neu- more 1 and 2 than 3
Blue Oyster Cult- Fire Of Unknown Origin
Richard and Mimi Farina
Mel Torme
Nico-Desert Shore
Ol Dirty Bastard- anything but that last one

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordic, is there any modern African he is already into? that may help with suggestions, but the Sunny Ade is a good call, and Fela is immortal. Maybe try "Ethiopiques 14: Getachew Mekuria" honking Ethiopian sax instrumentalsm friend sof mine who like Sun ra like it a lot so may work for him

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I desperately want to find some techno/house (of any sub-genre - I use techno as an umbrella term) that I'll like. Maybe this will help:

-I love disco up to around 1984.
-Things that I wish techno would sound/feel more like: Hot Butter's "Popcorn", the Coldcut remix of Eric B & Rakim's "Paid In Full", "I Feel Love", Space's "Magic Fly", Kraftwerk, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", "Rockit", the Ocean of Sound and Jazz Satellites comps.
-I like a lot of hip hop and am neutral in the undie-vs-bling-bling debate, mostly cause most of my faves either fall in between, or precede both (likewise 2003-pop vs indie rock).
-I don't go to clubs or do drugs.
-I favor the poppy over the abstract and prefer classic rock and punk to indie.
-I have the most brutal hatred for "Everybody Dance Now!"-type divas and have failed to be moved by Goldie's Timeless, Leftfield's Leftism and Prodigy's Fat of the Land and Music for the Jilted Generation as well as most techno I hear coming out of clubs or people's cars, or on late night CBC radio. There's a noise track in the middle of Fatboy Slim's On The Floor of The Boutique album ("I'm Just a Disco Dancer", maybe?) that is everything I hate most about techno.
-I like the rocking catchiness on Chemical Brothers' first 2 albums and maybe half of Fatboy Slim's songs, as well as the playfulness of Aphex Twin's Richard D. James album. Underworld's "2 Months Off" and "Born Slippy" sound pretty good too. Daft Punk's Discovery is a fantastic album (Homework sounded like hits-plus-filler to me).

Fire away!

Patrick, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Vitalic: Poney II
Laurent Garnier: The Sound of the Big Babou

Shirley & Co.-Shame Shame Shame
Dead Boys-Young, Loud & Snotty
Super Furry Animals-Radiator

arthur,i've said this a million times on a million threads, but if you like the super furries at all,get mwng
it is fucking brilliant...

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

My favourite Post-Rock album is Tortoise's "Standards" but most people don't like it.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

jay mc-the only can albums i have heard are monster movie and ege bamyasi, but i think the latter is along the lines of what you're looking for
i wasn't too impressed with monster movie though

robin (robin), Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dleone -- try Haniwa All-Stars debut album, 'Hiyohiko Senba and the Haniwa All-Stars'. Sony Japan 1983. It's got your five compass points and then some.

milton, Thursday, 24 April 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

jody, look into Carol of Harvest. very much like a Lene Lovich-fronted Mellow Candle kicked up with UO-sized guitar bombast. HUGE songs that really wouldn't sound out of place on the Fame OST. they were German, of course. Second Battle reissued their lone (1978, S/T) album, and i love it to death.

I'll come back to this thread with my own recommendations for everyone...

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 April 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Robin, but I've already got Mwng. After Radiator, it's my favorite of theirs.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 24 April 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur, get Vision Creation Newsun!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 24 April 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also looking for some really seedy nocturnal jazz. Reference points:

Meirelles-Contemplacao
Lounge Lizards - Harlem Nocturne
Jimi Tenor-Atlantis
Angelo Badalamenti-Twin Peaks/Fire Walk With Me OSTs
Jimmy Scott-Dream

I love this thread.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 24 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, thanks for the HEM intro. Christ, I need tissues, your right. Good stuff, going to have to pick up the album today. My wife will love it as well. Thanks. Killian, I have heard some Dakota Suite and enjoyed it. I will also check out the others. Thanks peeps. Man I'm a depressing guy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 April 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i like ART-metal - everytime i delve into REAL-metal i come out disappointed.
what i like is: phantomsmasher, kevorkian solution, khanate, earth, meshuggah, luttenbachers, orthrelm, crom-tech / octis, harry pussy, electric wizrd's "dopethrone" (but definitely not the one that came after that), melvins, upsilon acrux, stretchheads, mats& morgan, circle, ruins, buttholes circa "locust..", fushitsusha, naked city, faxed head (to a degree!) etc.
anaal nathrakh would be good if they didn't sound so danny elfman and the guy did wOnkier solos.
gorguts "obscura" sounds really grey and ordinary to me.
does REAL metal hold secrets of time signatures & psychedelic mentalisms? or is it all verse chorus verse while grown men act games workshop?

bob snoom, Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

dleone -- try Haniwa All-Stars debut album, 'Hiyohiko Senba and the Haniwa All-Stars'. Sony Japan 1983. It's got your five compass points and then some.

Milton, I have this too -- good stuff (though I can always do without Japanese reggae, as far as I know). Have you heard Picky Picnic? Kind of like Haniwa, except with lo-fi, analog synths, and a bit more out there.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

let ne try something,

Arthur: (file under Other recommendations) the Saints - Wild About You compilation, (Barry &) the Remains - s/t, CBGB's and the Birth of U.S. Punk compilation

Adam: re: nocturnal jazz. maybe a bit too obvious, but Miles Davis' l'Ascenceur pour l'Echafaud is really nocturnal, imo.

willem (willem), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur, as a SFA fan, you might like Lone Pigeon. Sounds a bit like a lo-fi, extra nutty Furries.

Nordic - I think a wonderful modern psychedelic band is (was) Olivia Tremor Control. Dusk At Cubist Castle is one of the best debut full-length efforts of all time, IMO. Black Foliage is excellent too. The OTC spin-off band Sunshine Fix is also great.

Julio & Nordic - if you dig the Japanese guitar freak-out scene, I might recommend Kousokuya, Seikazoku, Musica Transonic, Tsurubami, and most anything with Kawabata Makoto and/or Nanjo Asahito involved. Ohkami no Jikan is also excellent, though more droney, less guitar-noisey.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Patrick - Get the Felix da Housecat Excursions mix cd.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

chris, try the first idaho album. and the first tinderstciks one. not as depressive but pretty dark too.

i love

giant sand-chore of enchantment
yo la tengo-electropura
radiohead-amnesiac
nick drake-five leaves left
joni mitchell-hejira
new order-movement
red house painters-down colorfull hill

No I've not heard that, it's on Ata Tak though huh? can't get more promising than that, the search is on.

Chris Cutler's listed the album 'Kanishabali' by side project Haniwa-Chan as even weirder...when I finally make it to Tokyo that's still #1 on the list to find.

milton, Thursday, 24 April 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hem - Pacific Street is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. Its bringing tears to my eyes. Thanks a lot Dave.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! Chris V! Have you heard For Stars' Windows for Stars? Seriously, I don't there's anything I could recommend more highly to you than at least one song off of this album -- "Catholic School." The song itself is possibly better than anything the combined Mojave 3 and Red House Painters catalogs could produce, and the album is really quite good as well -- one of not-so-many records like this that I still listen to often.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 25 April 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard it Nabisco, but will def. check it out. I wonder if its available for DL. Hmmm.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, try theboylucas Out on the Wires, on Output. Talk Talk + Wilco + Four Tet just about sums up this lovely disc.

Tribe/El-P + The Clash + Chemicals = New Kingdom. Paradise Don't Come Cheap for starters. and i guarantee you'll come back around for Heavy Load before long. then seek out the Lumberjacks (=New Kingdom producers) remix of God's "Gold Teeth." heaviosity.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Nick, have you heard Prefuse 73? Weirdly difficult odd hip-hop electronica.

buttch (Oops), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

'skilz, no one would call it jazz, but i think you'd really like And Also the Trees' latter phase. Angelfish and Silver Soul nail that seedy Badalamenti bad-(road)trip vibe you're seeking, within a (slithering-out-from-under-the) rock context. nothing at all like their more baroque beginnings, and the shift has thrown many AATT fans for a resentful loop. i'm undecided, but i'm guessing you'll dig it plenty.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, my go again! But this time just recommend me anything based on this little demographic:

Sabres of Paradise: Haunted Dancehall
Plaid: Restproof Clockwork
Boo Radleys: Giant Steps
Arcturus: The Sham Mirrors
Aim: Coldwater Music
Beach Boys: Smile
Electric Wizard: Dopethrone

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, try Iron and Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ulver, dog latin. proceed with caution, some of it's just plain weird (and not always good-weird), but you're bound to find a mix of metal, mayhem, and downtempo that tickles you just right. either start safe with the retrospective sampler 1993-2003: 1st Decade in the Machines or check Aquarius Records for album-oriented pointers (and samples). go nuts.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

summerslastsound: I've heard Die Mattens Nadrigals and the William Blake album. Both are okay and I respect Ulver for their diverse approach to music, particularly since their genre is usually based around conformity, but I hardly listen to either of those albums, nor any of the Arcturus side-projects. I think I'll look into that compilation though as it sounds very interesting.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

alex -

you may have these already, and i've already named them on the "recommend country" thread, but...

sparklehorse - vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
beachwood sparks - make the robot cowboys cry

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 25 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the recommendations. i have heard of the two woven hand records. never heard of iron and wine though. the 1st sparklehorse is very good indeed as the last one. beachwood sparks i have never listened to.

i also love female singers/songwriters with extraordinary voices:

joni mitchell-blue
cat power-you are free
elysian fields-1st record
cowboy junkies-lay it down
mary margaret o'hara-miss america
laurie anderson-mister heartbreak
rickie lee jones-girl at her volcano
mazzy star-tonight that i might see
stina nordenstam-covers record

what else in this "genre" is worth it?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 26 April 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

alex, based on what you have said on this thread, you have remarkably similar tastes to me. Just as general reccomendations based on everything you've said, do you know any of these?

Devendra Banhart-Oh Me Oh My...(He's a male singer-songwriter, but he does have an extraordinary voice, and would fit nicely alongside some of the other names you have dropped upthread. Ditto for all the Angels of Light stuff as well)

Thalia Zedek-Maybe you know her already. if not, get the EP with VU and Dylan covers, then the album, then everything by Come!

Vashti Bunyan-Diamond Day (I don't know anyone who doesn't love this. Scottish psych/folk singer with an incredible voice).

Noahjohn-Had A Burning

Tom Ovans-I don't own anything by him, but he's on my list. Dylanesque singer/songwriter with crazy, scary vocals.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 26 April 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 26 April 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, you like a lot of alt.country there - do you listen to much 'real' country? If not, check out Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Hank Williams. To start with.

And for female singer/songwriters with extraordinary voices you've got to hear Sandy Denny. A good starting point is the 'Listen Listen' compilation.

James Ball (James Ball), Saturday, 26 April 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jus'got hold of this thread, and I really could use some help from fellow music lovers. I'm looking for something that establishes some kind of crossover w/ the following:

Fugazi - In On The Killtaker
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & I.S.
XTC - Black Sea
Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Throwing Muses - Limbo
Pale Saints - In Ribbons

or, cutting it short, something sharp and aggressive but melodic and original. Can anyone give some help?

nordicskillz, i hardly know any of the artists, you mentioned. i listened to some mp3s by devendra banhart and wasn't overwhelmed immediately. maybe i should give him another chance. is come this dark and bluesy indie band from boston? i have their 1st album. but somehow i never really got into it.

james, i don't listen to country. i think i can even safely say that i hate country. i like country elements like some pedal steel but country pure is too much for me. especially the typical female country voice is something i can't take. but i loved the second last johnny cash album (with the phantastic "mercy seat" over) which wasn't country at all.

an interesting selection, jp almeida. have you got the breeders "last splash" (power indie pop) or even better "pod" (more experimental)? or sonic youth's "dirty"?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 26 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot sandy denny, james. i have a 2cd best of but i never listen to it. she has a beautiful immaculate voice, that's for sure. some of the british folk rock hasn't aged well though i find.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 26 April 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

gosh this thread is long and i am losing track, but nitsuh, you should try the Chrono EP by Paul Kalkbrenner on BPitch.

as for me, (and i have asked Ned already so I think I have some sense!), if I like:
U2: War
and
Joy Division
and
Cure: Boys Don't Cry
and
Entertainment!
what is next?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 26 April 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

alex: try Mai Doi Todd. simple songs on guitar, extraordinary voice. (she's performing as a support act for the folk implosion here in the NL next month, maybe she'll get around mainhattan as well...)

JP Almeida (that name sounds cool btw), I second the suggestions for the Buzzcocks and the Breeders' Pod (alex has good taste!) and would like to add Modest Mouse. (Lonesome Crowded West or Moon & Antarctica, the first being my introduction to them). and from a little while back: Richard Hell & the Voidoids.
also, I think you would like Zoppo, but that may be a bit a hard to come by, as it's a dutch band... think lo-fi 80's Sonic Youth with great melodies.

and:
A big Thank You! to the people (dave225, douglas) who recommended A Certain Ratio to me: bought "Early" yesterday, listening to it now: great! (i was thinking i forgot Go4's "Entertainment!" in my love-list but listening to ACR it's obvious i didn't have to)

willem (willem), Saturday, 26 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

aaron, try "17 seconds" of the cure, "les bains douches" (one of the most powerful live albums of all time) by joy divisoin and "boy" by u2. my 3 fave albums of those 3 bands whom i love.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

aaron shoudlhave ride 'nowhere' or bark pscyhosis 'hex'

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

17 seconds is the one early cure I dont have, so I will try to remember to pick it up. I will get the JD live album after i work out this box set bizness (see "2nd wuarter 2003 purchases" thread). I have boy, but I like War more. :-)

I have Nowhere, but I have not heard "hex" I will look it up now :-)

Thanks!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Mainhatten - I'd definitely go w/ the Mia Doi Todd recommendation. Her Columbia debut (_The Golden State_) is excellent, and probably the easiest CD to get. It's also her most produced effort - if you're looking for something w/ sparseness (that is, just her voice & guitar), you should seek out any of her previous 3 albums (_Zeroone_, _Come Out of Your Mine_, _The Ewe and the Eye_), though the last one listed might be hardest to come by. Visit her major label web presence - http://www.miadoitodd.com - for sound clips etc. If you Google her name, you should find a website featuring some clips from _Come Out of Your Mine_, so you can compare the newer MDT w/ her older output.

Also, if you haven't heard Nina Nastasia, Alex, you should most definitely give her a listen. (And she's coming out w/ her 3rd album in the next couple of months, too.) Web site address (w/ MP3 love) = http://www.southern.com/southern/band/NASTA/

And, actually, Alex, you might like Hem, too! http://www.rabbitsongs.com - samples & hoohah. (And, yo Poops - you might like Nina N. & Mia Doi Todd, too.)

Aaron G: you might like some of this stuff:
- Radio 4's _Gotham!_
- Interpol's _Turn On the Bright Lights_
- The Ex's _Dizzy Spells_
- Erase Errata's _Other Animals_

The first two are right in line w/ what you listed; the last two drink from the same pond as what you listed, but choose to piss in different places. (Yeah metaphors!)

Also - you might want to check out the Midnight Oil retrospective. I was SHOCKED (SHOCKED, I tell you) to find out how similar it sounded to that post-punkish stuff. Be wary of some didacticism (sic), though (and this would be didacticism that's not quite as festively framed as the politicking on G04's _Entertainment_).

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

david, thanx i'll try those. you know that i bloody miss those listening chambers...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I do, too. Tho I miss having the time to do them more (and the $$$ to pay for the bandwidth to perform such shenanigans) (and yadda yadda yadda). If there was a better, more organized / interesting way to do them, it'd be lots of fun to try again.

And a belated "you're welcome" to Chris V. - glad you're enjoying the CD. (The one that makes me reach for the kleenex, BTW, is "Sailor Song". The rest of the tracks "only" get something in my eye.)

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

:Hex" looks really good! BP was the band that I always forgot to remember... I still listen to the boymerang album.

david i know interpol and radio 4 but i will look up the other groups, thanks!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ach. I came on to recommend Nina Nastasia to Alex, but I see David R already did. So here's another vote for Nina -----> X

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 27 April 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanx all you ppl out there. I do own those Breeders CD's (one of my fave bands) and "Dirty", and they are indeed great. Modest Mouse has been on my "to hear" list, together with Don Caballero, Gang of Four and other stuff, and my interest in the Buzzcocks has increased since I heard a bit of "Another Music In a Different Kitchen".

I'll search for some Richard Hell & Voidoids, Straitjacket Fits and Zoppo, after I find out what's wrong with my Kazaa (it closes itself right after I start it - same with KLite and iMesh).

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 27 April 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

>>>Ok, where should I start with classic rock from 1969-mid 70's, especially riff heavy stuff like the Who and Led
Zeppelin? Bearing in mind i like: Queen, the Beatles, Ruins, Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, Can, Boredoms, 'Piper at
the Gates of Dawn' and lots of 60's garage/psych bands.<<<

Pink Fairies, especially Never Never Land
Budgie
Sir Lord Baltimore
Ursa Major
Trapeze
Black Sabbath (the 1st 5 records are awesome!)
BLue Oyster CUlt, especially Tyranny & Mutation

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

John--

An obv pick would be the MC5's "High Time," for starters. (But you have that...don't you?)

M Specktor (M Specktor), Monday, 28 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

For riff-heavy stuff from that era, you need to check out Blue Cheer.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 28 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

How about some prog? Things I like that are on the fringe:

Amon Duul 2 - Yeti
King Crimson - Red
Magma (tho I don't have anything other than mp3s, so recommendations would be nice)
Yes (same situation as with Magma)
Ruins
later Boredoms

Or poppy dance. I like:

Avalanches - Since I Left You
Daft Punk - Discovery (but not so much what I've heard of Homework)
Basement Jaxx - Rooty

original bgm, Monday, 28 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Am interested in more death/black/extreme metal. I like/have enjoyed things by:

Origin
Neurosis
Morbid Angel
Mastodon
War Horse

individual tracks by Emperor and Borknagar

the guitar sound on Destruction's Eternal Devastation

Voivod - Nothingace and Angel Rat
bits and pieces of hardcore from Big Black to v early Fugazi to Shotmaker, Native Nod, 1.6 Band, Camera Obscura, The Locust, Lungbutter

Am on reasonably good terms with the entire canon of pre-Van Halen hard rock, from what I know of it, am a fan of Zeppelin and Rush up to Moving Pictures. Enjoy Soundgarden, System Of a Down.

Avant-prog like U Totem.

I have Obscura and like a lot of it but don't play it a lot yet.

Am interested in stuff that's more progressive, technical, avant-garde in terms of guitar harmonies and sonics.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 28 April 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Curious about more current postpunk/alt/indie rock. I like:

Sonic Youth (especially Evol, also Goo and Dirty)
most of the last 3 Radiohead albums
Smashing Pumpkins
Pixies
Unknown Pleasures
Loveless
The Velvet Underground & Nico
The Smiths
Murmur
The Beatles
The Yes Album
bits of the Magic Hour
Different Class
the hardcore and avant-prog stuff mentioned upthread
strong, quirky singers
bands who can play but am just as interested in hearing them do something creative sonically
minimal IDM - would like to hear more fusions

have stuff by but I'm not a wholehearted fan:
The Magnetic Fields
The Dismemberment Plan

heard a song by, had my interest piqued:
Styrofoam

not really my thing:
singer-songwriters
Pavement
Shellac
Don Caballero

wish a painful bloody death on:
98% of slowcore and post-rock
weak voices as in Belle and Sebastian, Galaxie 500, Eric's Trip, New Order, Slint
cuddlecore

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 28 April 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan: try "Close to the Edge", "Tales from Topographic Oceans" or "Relayer" by Yes. These are Yes at their dense and complex. Very good.

Sundar: if you like Neurosis, you WILL like Isis. A bit more proggy and metal is Opeth, but nice as well. On the indie field, you will probably like Throwing Muses or "Murray St." from SY.
Helium's "The Magic City" is great as well. Indie rock with synthesisers - it sounds better than it looks like! I haven't been surprised like this for a long time. D'load "Medieval people" and you will understand.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 28 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

JP: I'm gonna hit the bargain lp bins and seek those out asap!

Also, does it work the other way around as well fer Neurosis:Isis? Because I like Isis very much and Neurosis do little for me. And I thought I was the only person in the world who likes theat Helium album!

Sundar: You may wanna check out Absu's Tara for black metal. I'm completely addicted to it right now, though it may sound a bit samey for someone who doesn't already love the genre.

original bgm, Monday, 28 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the tips. I've heard some good things about Helium elsewhere also. As a big fan, I have Murray St already. (I also really like the first couple SY albums.)

Yes is all about The Yes Album for me, which might be kind of on the other end of the spectrum - it features a lot of them at their most soft and pastoral, with (by Yes standards) shorter, tighter compositions. But it achieves heights a cut above much of their other stuff for me, a grace and beauty much of their other material lacks.

Also, not really my thing on the indie front but I can bend on all of these: the lo-fi aesthetic, heavy American roots/folk/country/trad influences, Neil Young-style vocals, naturalistic production.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 28 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

sundar subramanian - do you have the new Emperor "best of" - it's called Scattered Ashes and I reckon it's by far the most essential extreme metal release at the moment. I'm also getting into Sigh's "Imaginary Sonicscape" album, Macabre's "Dahmer", Arcturus "The Sham Mirrors" and last (but not least): MANOWAR!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes Mr. Specktor!! I was actually making recommendations regarding an earlier query in the thread. High Time is a must-own for fans of riffage, ounk, metal, and just about anything "kewl." Not to mention Kick Out the Jams..... arrrrrrggggghhhh!!!!!!

emily bee (emilybee), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Magma (tho I don't have anything other than mp3s, so recommendations would be nice)

If you want a great overview of what they could do with their sound, I would actually recommend the album Attahk (note that this is not an oft-recommended starter from most fans, though). Hhai: Live is also a great starter, presenting them in a live situation (where they most thrived), where they were the most intense and pwoerful. Apart from that, two essential albums are Wurdah Itah and Mekanik Destruktiv Kommandoh.

Also highly recommended if you like the Magma sound, which is called "Zeuhl" (in order of preference):

Weidorje - Weidorje
Eskaton - 4 Visions [pretty much a shameless clone unrelated to the band, but a terrific clone at that]
Zao - Z = 7L

Yes (same situation as with Magma)

The Yes Album makes for the best introduction to the band. Their two best albums (IMO) were Close to the Edge and Relayer.

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Amon Duul 2 - Yeti
King Crimson - Red
Magma (tho I don't have anything other than mp3s, so recommendations would be nice)
Yes (same situation as with Magma)
Ruins
later Boredoms

This is you asking to be fed-exed a copy of Koenjihyakkei's first couple of records.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Avant-prog like U Totem.

This band was a merger of two other bands: Motorist Totem Guild and 5uus, both of which have their own separate albums. Also Thinking Plague's In Extremis is a terrific example of this style of music. All of these bands are on the Cuneiform label...

Am interested in stuff that's more progressive, technical, avant-garde in terms of guitar harmonies and sonics.

A couple of groups (none of which have anything to do with one another) spring to mind that are definitely worth mentioning (listed in approximate order to how I would think you would like them, based on your dis/likes):

Happy the Man - The best American prog rock band, very interesting harmony, melody, and rhythm nuances in their songs. Sound: Across various tracks, manages to combine elements of Genesis, Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Steely Dan (on the tracks w/ vocals). Happy the Man and Crafty Hands.

Area - Incredible band of Italian musicians with unbelievable Greek vocalist (his name was Demetrio Stratos). A weird and unique mixture of Mediterranean fusion/occassional free jazz/political imagery. Arbeit Macht Frei, Caution: Radiation Area, Crac! and Are(a)zione all classics.

Heldon - French band led by guitarist/philosopher Richard Pinhas. Sound: similar to Fripp/Tangerine Dream/70s Miles Davis (monolithic acid jam vibe). Allez Teia, Agneta Nilson, or Un Reve Sans Consequence and Stand By if you want something more rock.

Univers Zero - Very dark, chamberish, dry-sounding Belgian band. Ceux de Dehors and The Hard Quest.

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar, if you're not aware of them, you might also want to check out Echolyn, another American band that started out with typical prog ornaments; they signed with Sony in the mid 90s, but then got dumped.

Since they reformed in 2000 they seem to have evolved into something that to me sounds more mature & generally deeper (I like their early stuff, but it sounds more surfacy to me), while at the same time not pandering to the lowest com' denom'. Their recent album is Mei; though I've only played it a few times so far, my initial impression is favorable. The album is one track, about 45 minutes long or so, though it plays more like a suite of songs or song cycle. Enigmatic (the theme seems to be about America in some way? The CD booklet is loaded with those classic Americana photos), but largely accessible.

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar, also check out solo Bob Drake, who is in Thinking Plague and 5uus.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

which bob drake? it's weird, I love the Hail records, and Thinking Plague's 'In This Life' just sounds better by the year, but drake's 'medallion animal carpet' didn't connect... it was sprawlingly weird, but I wasn't drawn in.

milton, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

try skull mailbox -- IMO a particularly endearing avant-pop record, like if Paul Simon and Van Dyke Parks decided to screw the suits and just record a hallucination

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Emily, do you mean "not pop" as in "not chart-pop" or as in "not indie-pop?"

And Sasha, I didn't reject the first of those recommendations! It's just that the other is, like ... it's as if they did a focus group of just me and made a record based on that; no surprises.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i meant not indie-pop, but i'm not really too interested in chart-pop either. sorry i wasn't clear!

emily bee (emilybee), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you heard the Monochrome Set, Emily? Still a bit on the pop end, but with a lot more solidity than, say, the TVPs. (I think their first two records, Strange Boutique and Love Zombies, have been packaged together on CD.)

More importantly: This Heat, the Family Fodder, and Swell Maps might offer a more slanted / abstracted take on some of the things you like.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i know the monochrome set-and really like them! haven't heard the swell maps or family fodder, though-will check out (i have this heat's s/t and deceit, neither of which i really got into but perhaps it's time for another set of listens....thanks)

Sleater Kinney - Dig Me Out, One Beat
Bardo Pond - Lapsed
Portishead - s/t

This is you asking to be fed-exed a copy of Koenjihyakkei's first couple of records.

Ha! I do have the last one and like very much. How do their first few differ? Are they still in print?

original bgm, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Monochrome Set are a joy, but the place to start with them, hands down, is a comp of their early singles & radio sessions called _Volume, Contrast, Brilliance_. "He's Frank," "Ten Don'ts for Honeymooners," "The Jet Set Junta," "Eine Symphonie des Grauens," etc. ... worth the effort to track it down.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Monochrome Set best-of is a great place to start. So many strong songs on there.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I do have the last one and like very much. How do their first few differ? Are they still in print?

NIVRAYM is a good album. The first two (there are only 3) are real classics. They differ in that 1) NIVRAYM is more a straight avant-prog record with keyboard solos and things, where the first two are more very intense zeuhl (a la Magma) records. 2) The production is a lot better. The sound on the those records should be capsulized as the only way to make a "brutal prog" record. In fact, I'd go so far to say that the second album is the greatest zeuhl record ever made by anyone other than Magma (and in many ways, is better than a lot of their music).

Of course, they are out of print -- don't even think Yoshida has anymore.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I always meant to get the second one, the first one is amazing.

when I dissed bob drake's 'medallion animal carpet' yesterday I felt uncomfortable, went home and put it on, and I have to take back what I said, it's fantastic and I'm buying his other three records on sight... I was wrong, the songs are in there they've just bonded with the production on such an intricate murky level it's too much to take in on the first listen...

milton, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Aargh! I gotta get them Koenjihyakkei records!! :)

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 1 May 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Emily - i think you need more Factory Records in your life. I advise some Durutti Column (either of the first two albums) and some Section 25.

I want to own at least one Rolling Stones album before I die. Considering I enjoy the following:
Beach Boys: Smiley Smile
Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour
Captain Beefheart: Troutmaskreplica
King Crimson: Red

what do you think I should discover first?

Go for "Their Majesties Satanic Request" (particularly based on the choices still listed in the quote). Accept that it doesn't sound like a typical Stones album though. :-)

Ok, I just listened to the first track on Viva Koenji and wow. That breakdown about 8mins in that they ride til the end is MASSIVE. And the production on this really is much better than on Nivraym. (like on the last track, which is amazing aside from the fact that the drums sound weak. POWERFUL weak.)

original bgm, Saturday, 3 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I also think its funny that there's an empty text file included in the folder in which the mp3s are stored -- its titled "!!! fucking amazing record!!!.txt"

original bgm, Saturday, 3 May 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi. Today I like these:

Queens Of The Stone Age "Songs For The Deaf"
The Deftones "White Pony"

I don't know anything about this strain of metal/RAWK but I would like something else that would sit proudly alongside these. I have heard the System Of A Down record, it's not my bag. I quite liked "Antichrist Superstar", though.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Would I like Turbonegro? Nick Olivieri likes them.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Get the "A Perfect Circle" album.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What Jel said.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I need more IDM. I like

Pan Sonic - A
Ryoji Ikeda
Immersion - Low Impact
Kid606 - Down With the Scene
Oren Ambarchi
Alva.Noto - Transform
the entire canon of minimalist composition

Wasn't too taken by Fennesz

Also should look into more hip-hop. Things I like include

Goodie Mob - esp Still Standing, mostly interested in the rhythmic interplay of the voices with each other and with the beat
LL Cool J - Radio and esp Mama Said Knock You Out
the first Missy Elliot
used to love ODB - Return to the 36 Chambers but haven't played it in ages
I like some of Run Come Save Me

Didn't get Aquemini but I like the hits from Stankonia

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

sundar, get roland kayn: tektra. I think this is all thats available. I haven't heard it but I've heard one other piece of his which was beautiful. check the forced exposure descrip.

I can't afford it :(

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar, do you have Nuno Canavarro's Plux Quba? Also, if you like Stankonia singles, you will like Cee-lo and Killer Mike (singles.. the albums are good too).

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

that roland kayn 'tetra' set on barooni is wonderful. long form cascading sheets, a lot more inscrutable than the thomas koner discs for instance. the textures are a lot more abstract, lots of close intervals, metallic. there are many other discs available, pieces that date back through the 70's, but they're considerably more expensive, amoeba in berkeley has 5-6 different discs but they're all $40 double sets.

sundar, Phoenecia's 'Brown Out' is a lovely, detail rich listening disc worth checking out. a slow start but six tracks in, voosh. I also think Lesser's 'Gearhound' is criminally underrated, but it's another record that starts with a punishing, extended (wonderful) attack to clear the novices out... the last track, 'decomposing jockey' is beautifully twisted.

& yup I have yet to get fennesz either really, it's wallpaper. pita's '7 tons for free' and 'get out' though, those are impressive...

jleideck, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

also Sundar, a disc I've been listening to a bit is Ukiyo-e "experience makes you blind" on Trifekta Records. Has remixes by Oren A, Pimmon, etc.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

is that good? i keep meaning to check them out

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

its nice. i haven't heard the unremixed stuff. but I recommend it based on Sundars list. the oren a track sounds like...oren a's ambient stuff.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I borrowed The Soft Bulletin by the Flaming Lips from the library, but didn't even finish listening to it, which doesn't really surprise me; but what does surprise me is that I have heard some samples from Yohshide whatever and it sounds good. Does anyone who sort of knows my taste in music think I would like it?

I want something sweet, but I'm too lazy to walk to the corner.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoshide... Yoshimi?

and no, i don't think you'd like it.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin said he dug: >>>I own the following CDs:
Presidents of the United States of America
Badfinger
Oasis
Madness
Strokes
Eagles
Prodigy "Fat of the Land"
Metallica "Vertigo"
Asian Dub Foundation
<<<

Given the Badfinger, Oasis, Strokes thing (good choices!), I might recommend Big Star and Sloan.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 9 May 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar, I bet you'd like the new Rapture and S Process albums, Echoes and MNML, respectively. I guess The Rapture won't be released for another month. S Process is on French Kiss records, dist. by Southern Records. Both have "strong, quirky singers and bands that can play" in a decidedly post-punk/indie-but-not-slowcore idiom.

If you haven't already heard them, you might also try:
The Fire Show
Lifter Puller
Blonde Redhead
Unwound
Blumfield (German-language band, somewhat Pavement-y)
Larsen
Ludus
Associates

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Jens, have you heard the Moldy Peaches?

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

sundar get 'sheer hellish miasma' by kevin druum. I'm almost certain you'll like it.

rockist- The fact you don't like soft bulletin prob means you might not like yoshimi. why ddin't you like 'soft..'?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordicskillz, they're more stoner than metal, but you might like The Warlocks (current SF band) or Dead Meadow.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, I've largely forgotten what it sounded like. I didn't like the strings and the overall production. Just kind of blah. The retro- bits they were working with aren't qualities I like in the originals.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Jens - By Coastal Cafe.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 11 May 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Mainhatten, I love those same girl singers, too. In addition to Nina Nastasia, check out Innocence Mission's Glow album. Their other stuff mostly sucks, but everything clicked on that one. The singer is a cross between Harriet Wheeler and Hope Sandoval. Also, in case you haven't already heard them:

Mirah - Advisory Committee
Cynthia Dall - untitled (over her 2002 2nd album)
Tarnation - Gentle Creatures, or pref. I'll Give You Something to Cry About if you can find it
Lois Maffeo's last two collaborations, with Brendan Canty & in Owl & The Pussycat

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 11 May 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I meant to mention, Alex, Edith Frost's 3 or 4 early EPs and singles combine to form kind of another Calling Over Time if you prefer that over her later albums like I do.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 11 May 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan N says poppy dance!

ok.

Together-So Much Love To Give

Linus Loves-The Terrace

Basement Jaxx-Acid Love (if you can find it on mp3 or whatever)

I could go on all day.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 11 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I THINK THE FOLLOWING BANDS ARE ALMOST WORTHY OF MY FUCKING TIME:

ROLLIN'S BAND
EXTREME NOISE TERROR
AQUA
MACABRE
NWA
BURAZUM
ANAL CUNT

I REFUSE TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING YOU WEAK WILLED SWINES RECOMMEND ME BUT FUCK YOU ALL MAY AS WELL TRY!!

FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

FROMBERT (dog latin), Monday, 12 May 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

revive?

smoky topaz (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Recommend something out of my comfort zone.

X-section:
nick drake, shannon wright, mary timony, nina nastasia, neko case, moonshake, TFUL282, songs:ohia, dead can dance, lida husik, geraldine fibbers, dirty three, rachel's, bjork, carter family, magnetic fields, kate bush, kurt weill, echo and the bunnymen, th faith healers, francoise hardy, e. european/near eastern/nordic folk.

Things I've been looking into:
gentle giant, king crimson, shirley collins, deerhoof, piano magic, gang of four, neutral milk hotel, patti smith, sally timms, billie holliday.

My tastes seem to run a bit folky and/or pompous and I tend to prefer female voices. I just feel my music collection is lacking a sense of history. I don't have a good radio station anymore to introduce me to new things, or money to buy tons of records.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Friday, 19 September 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The Modern Lovers, where to start? I have only heard Roadrunner but I think it is fucking genius.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

with Dead Can Dance, you can start with 'Within the Realm of a Dying Sun', where their European pompous folk side is on full display, or, if you don't object to comps, with their new 'Wake' thingy which would also showcase their latter, more intersting IMO, oriental flava

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 September 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Blood and sparkles,

King Crimson: "In The Court Of The Crimson King" (yes, it's the obvious one, and ususally I try to steer people away from that one towards "Discipline" but I have a feeling it'll be more up your street)
Neutral Milk Hotel: "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea"
Patti Smith: I think you'd be best off starting with "Wave" and work your way backwards from there.

Oh and is it too late to say: Sasha, "The Monochrome Set (I Presume)" wasn't the Monochrome Set's first single, in fact it wasn't actually a single: "He's Frank" / "Alphaville" (RT006) was first, then "Eine Symphonie Des Grauens" / "Lester Leaps In" (RT019) then "The Monochrome Set" / "Mr Bizarro" (RT028).

After that they left Rough Trade and signed to Virgin. The ".... (Slight Return)" verion of their theme song was included on their debut album "Strange Boutique".

The best staring point for The Monochrome Set imho is a budget-line CD release by Virgin called "Tomorrow Will Be Too Long", which actually contains the whole of "Strage Boutique" and their second album "Love Zombies".

I fookin' luv The Monochrome Srt, me!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 19 September 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. It's stuff from that NMH album that has sparked my interest, so I was planning on trying it out sometime. I only have a few odd Patti Smith and King Crimson songs... they sometimes get a little jazzy for me, but I would like to hear more. I quite like Gentle Giant and a friend recommended Octopus to me as a starting point, if I recall correctly. I was going through a phase of intense curiosity about 70's prog but had no clue where to start.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Friday, 19 September 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
this is a dope thread.

Ronan... I would start out with the first album, called "Modern Lovers", which has Roadrunner, and also a number of other excellent tracks. my favorites are "I'm Straight", "Dignified and Old" and "Government Center". I dont know what is released in UK/Ireland, but here the album is on Rhino. It might be OOP (not listed on Rhino website) but I bet that it is sitting in a bin somewhere.

I really love the Bark Psychosis album btw, thanks keith.

my new list for help:
Japan: Tin Drum
Associates: 4th Drawer Down
Nico: Desertshore

(obv i can check out other albums by these people)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(actually i already have as 4th drawer, sulk, and radio 1 sessions are on order right now, and gentleman take polaroids and oil on canvas are in stock at store right now, and i have first 4 or 5 nico albums on mp3)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a whole album that sounds like "Flawless" by The Ones!

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

bump

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 27 October 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

First 4 or 5 Nico albums? She's only made 6 albums, so I guess you've got it pretty much covered!

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 27 October 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

bump

I also am enjoying "My Name Is Joe" by Joe. What else should I get?

adaml (adaml), Monday, 27 October 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone recommend me:

1) Some really good soul or jazz

I like:

O.V. Wright
Marvin Gaye
Freddie Scott
Pharaoh Sanders

2) Something in the same rock family tree as the following:

Velvet Underground
Galaxie 500 / Luna
The Clientele

bert (bert), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

bert -

you need an al green record--you can't go wrong with "let's stay together", "i'm still in love with you", or "call me", or you should be able to find a greatest hits cheap.

as for the other one, young marble giants' "colossal youth" is very similar in mood to the better galaxie 500/luna stuff and third album velvets that you seem to be looking for. you'd also be well-served by the big star twofer that combines "#1 record" and "radio city".

dan (dan), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I want some saccharine soul-type stuff from the seventies. The kind of stuff that influenced Daft Punk on "Something About Us"; stuff that my grandparents have like Stevie Wonder and the Commodores and shit, but not those.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron, get Mayo Thompson's Corky's Debt to His Father, the 1970 american song collection(ok, LP) from the usually much more avant-garde Red (c)Krayola leader. He was listening to lots of Randy Newman and Van Dyke Parks and wrote a bunch of touching, slightly weird, slightly brilliant songs, mostly about the relationships between men and women with great lyrics...

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Been listening to Brian Eno, Homosexuals, This Heat, Urinals (100 Flowers disc is on it's way!), Unrest, Scritti Politti, the Jungle Brothers and British 'post-rock'. New stuff I enjoyed: M83, Mae Shi, Phoenix and Kings of Convienice. What should you have me hear next? Especially interested in electronic stuff I wouldn't know about - don't know about that much - and why I should give it a try.

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

These last few months I've been really getting into the 70's/80's great pop song writers, that is Talking Heads, Roxy Music, Talk Talk and Abba. Okay, you wouldn't really put them together generally, but it's not what I'd normally have been listening to a couple of years ago, particularly with Abba and RM who I always assumed were horribly cheap and worthless. I need more bands with this feel. As for Abba, I'm more of a fan of the last two or three albums rather than say Dancing Queen.
