I saw the go-betweens tonight. it was really good--the first time I've seen them.

robert was v. funny and stalking around making faces.

they played nothing from the first three records and only a couple from the fourth--mostly newer stuff.

I really liked one called 'surfing magazines' which, ally cook tells me, is from their last but one album. he also told me it isn't as good on the record as it was tonight. but I will download it anyway.

they played an encore and were off stage by half past ten. when music started playing and the non-stage lights came up, many of the people in the crowd started to boo v. loudly. it upset me a little. but they came back on and played another two songs. they seemed to enjoy it.

in the middle of one song [I forget which], robert started talking about their tour, as the other band members played on. he said that they're off on a new tour around europe, for four weeks. four weeks is a long time, he says; the longest tour in rock and roll--the foo fighters--the foo fighters only do two weeks---the strokes--they do two weeks and go back to new york--but the go-betweens will do four weeks--and this is the first night of their tour--so they are fresh.

and they went on and played the rest of a great show.

I liked it a lot.

I have never seen and would never see a live music show--they allow too much room for the artists to play with/change the lyrics/tempo/instrumentation from the songs' original recording.

the only 'live' show I would attend would be one that had the original composer of the songs sitting in a high-backed chair in front of a machine playing the definitive recorded version of the songs as recorded by them.

I saw interpol play in milwaukee last september.

but we were tired and only heard two or three songs before leaving.

wasn't so fun. but they had a local guy supporting them. a mark waldoch. he was great.

Palomar, last night, who were terrific (I bought their CD, which isn't as good as the show was). The Oranges Band before them, who were OK but nowhere near as good as I'd hoped. Missed the Hold Steady, alas, esp. since I wrote 'em up recently.

Badly Drawn Boy (he had a band with him).

The show was about three days before Have you Fed the Fish came out in the U.S. and it was a Tuesday and Snowing so only a couple hundred people showed up. I guess that was a blow to his ego or something because he was kind of acting like an Ass. He even stopped a song 4 or 5 bars in and gave band members dirty looks. Pretty disappointing.

Last weekend, my brother's band, the Golden Famile, and a band called the Blackeyes. Quite good, the both of them, in a, i dunno, psych-country way. Golden Famile were somewhere between spiritualized and blue rodeo, maybe (simplish country songs, but with farfisa and sax and distortion). Blackeyes had a bowed saw, which is always a nice thing.

Went out to see Aytobach Kreisor at the new Sin-e, but decided at the last minute (like literally; I was in the neighborhood) that I wasn't in the mood. It was weird. I was sort of looking forward to this show. Good band -- Long Island stoner-metal meets East Village punk with a bit of what you'd imagine a slacked-out Motorhead sounds like. I've done a couple of write-ups on 'em here and there.

I saw Deerhoof and a bunch of crap bands. Deerhoof was really great. It was a really strange atmosphere (local guys were doing weird al covers on stage before they went on, it was outdoors, daytime, kinda cloudy), but they seemed to enjoy playing.

I was going to see Q & Not U, but they canceled. When I saw Wilco they did not do "Misunderstood", which is my favorite song.

I saw Michael Hurley for $3 in a small bar. Soft-spoken, a little tired, but with moments of wit and inspiration (he played electric piano a little too which was danceable even though no one did). In April I missed Smegma, Bright Eyes, Devendra Banhart/Angels of Light, Hella/Aisler's Set, and Notwist due mostly to lack of funds. Shitty.

i've been going to a ridiculous amount of shows in the past year. it always seems strange to me how little of ILM even seems to go to concerts or talk about live performance.

last week was Postal Service/Cex. PS really surpassed my expectations and put on a good show, not just laptop fuckery w/ singing. good to see Cex again since he moved out west, but his set was mostly new goth-y stuff that i wasn't really feeling.

i saw Q And Not U recently and was pretty impressed. i never saw them as a quartet, and hadn't heard their last album but they turned out to be pretty fun and creative and energetic.

mad capsule markets were amazing! really rocked and mixed all the computer stuff with live drums/guitar/bass/samples really well. They guy even did a "sine wave" solo by twiddling all these knobs on this machiney thing in front of him. Everyone went mental throughout the night!.

saw the faint as well who were fun and had great visuals behind them but ultimately just pressed play on the laptops and only the singer was really live.

William Cepeda and Grupo Afro-Boricua a month or two ago. It was pretty good, but after a while the Puerto Rican folkloric stuff starts getting too samey for me. It really is a folk music, and even though he add variety by changing the orchestration frequently, it still gets to be a little too much of the same thing. Also, it turned into a Puerto Rican pride fest, which I think I've had enough of by now. On the other hand, I would occasionally look at the percussionists lined up on staging, playing for very long stretches at a time, and just be amazed at their intensity.

Don't go to nearly as many gigs as I used to. Last one was Wayne Shorter at the Barbican about six weeks ago. Great band - John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums and Danilo Perez on piano. It was excellent.

I saw McLuskey and the Oranges last night in DC. McLuskey was pretty grand, all drunken Welsh swagger. Their songs came across pretty well, mostly stuff from Do Dallas but a couple of alright new tunes. The Oranges were good, but the energy seemed to be a bit down as the crowd was really sparse.

I saw Q and Not U a couple of weeks ago, again in DC, and they were terrible. Banging on dustpans and the like, and making some VERY BRAVE stands against the war in Iraq. Plus, they need to get a bassist, as the random, atonal keyboard blurt is really a poor substitute for low-end rhythmic melody. A bummer, as their albums are swell.

aaand Wayne Shorter Quartet (my first jazzconcert actually. I was a bit afraid, since while I knew some of his solorecords, stuff with Miles and Weather Report, I had NO idea what he'd been up to for over 20 years. Thankfully it turned out to be one helluva (acoustic) concert. I was slightly afraid that he'd be a completely burnt out ol' guy doing totally toothless smoothjazz now.

Last I saw was the Dismemberment Plan...I think that was last year. i'd never heard any of their songs and I was thrilled to see they were GREAT.
It was in a little shack in the middle of an alley, almost a hobo slumgullionland....people were warming their hands on burning oil barrels outside and trying to protect themselves from the rain. their were lots of leaks in the roof.
The audience was really colorful, lotso indie kids with kids dressed like indie kids. One couple had a baby in red footie pajamas with big red earmuffs like rifle shooters use to protect his baby ears. The bassist broke a string halfway though, and the broken string was given to the baby, who chewed on it. Another standout was this 350 pound man in short shorts and a baseball cap, dancing and sweating to every song, shouting all the words and drumming the beat on his enormous chest.
The singer did impressions of Henry Rollins and some others...his Bart Simpson impression was greeted with "meh" from the audience. He said, "Okay, here's our next song. it's called Fuck You for Hating My Bart Impression."

I saw The Notwist last Sunday night. Over half of the set had live drums over computer rhythm tracks, and it never seemed to gel. The drummer didn't seem to be enjoying it anymore than I did. I'd love to see what's-his-name with just a gutiar though. I Am Spoonbender played and were tremendously entertaining, mostly due to ridiclulous stage antics and rrrooowwwrrr singer. Styrofoam opened and he seems like a very nice guy.

Thursday night I saw Portastatic and Yo La Tengo. Portastatic sounded like Superchunk (that is to say, there was no reason Mac couldn't have released the albums under the 'Chunk name with them as his backing band.) Yo La Tengo were pretty great, but I wish they played more noisy stuff.. it was mostly calm stuff from the last two albums. "From A Motel 6" and "Blue Line Swinger" were awesome.

After that show my girlfriend and I drove to meet some friends at Munch House, and we saw The Chinese Stars who absolutely destroyed the place. Members of Arab on Radar and Six Finger Satellite sounding as you'd expect them to, but catchier and more rockin'. Ear-bleeding dance punk for the masses. They blew Yo La Tengo off the stage from across town.

Saw Deerhoof Tuesday night. Pretty blazing. Drummer is next in line for fanboy devotion. Is approx. 7 feet tall, plays huge parade kick with tambourine roped to front head, small ride cymbal, and a thin, jazzbo snare. That's all--no toms, no hi-hat. Sits on weird little square pillow, then bugs out like Elvin with some post-hardcore snare opinions. (People will mention Damon Che, but Damon uses his galumphing mega-set to get mega-bass, non-metric rumbling, while this guy is still feeling a strong downbeat and has a loud as fuck snare.)

Sorry for geek moment.

Singer does great kicks and air traffic controller arm movements. Set was not too long, as their genius would be less genius at, say, an hour.

Also saw Califone at another venue, who seemed too sleepy and jammy at first but ended up getting into my head, in a good way, like they always do.

Norwegian band Number Seven Deli. Today. In an Oslo tube station.

I believe this event was arranged by the municipality of Oslo, several bands within a lot of different genres were playing Oslo tube stations all day long.

Actually didn't sound too bad. Those underground stations have kind of the right accoustic for that kind of concerts. Add the fact that Number Seven Deli have released the best album of 2003 so far, and the concert was nice enough. :-)

Tonight I go see Calla (for the 20th time?) at the Mercury Lounge. I'll probably see them tomorrow night too, as Sightings are gonna open.

And You Will Know Us By The Length Of Our Band Name at the Black Cat in DC on the 17th. Good show as always. I liked the show before that better though, it was the Mooney Suzuki at Fletchers in Baltimore the friday before, and it was the first time I saw them because I missed them the last 4 times they played in the DC/Balto area since I moved here.

Boths shows were buy-a-tshirt worthy. BIg Ups to both.

Next shows I'm gonna see are the Supersuckers on the 6th and the Faint on the 8th.

Jan Jelinek and Thomas Fehlman last thursday at Tonic. I really enjoyed Jelinek's set. But I'm no good at the verbal descriptions. I noticed the infamous Other Music Scott from that record store thread was in attendance. It was also nice to see the opener MIMM who had among it's members the always sweet to me bartender from Tonic. They played relaxing pretty music. It's a Tonic heavy week, tonight to see P-Orridge and Tues too.

I went to the Bulb Records 10th Anniversary show (part one) on Friday at the Magic Stick in Detroit. Missed Mind Flayer, but I saw Danse Asshole, MC Trachiotomy, Demolition Doll Rods, and Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Man, Quintron puts on a great show! Doll Rods were really good, too. Really good night overall.

I contemplated going to see Saturday Looks Good To Me last night, but I was too tired after Friday night and a family wedding earlier in the day/night. Off to see Evan Parker tomorrow in Ann Arbor.

The last show I was at was last night - I actually walked out, it was so bad.

Well, the support band were mates of mine, and they were very good in a singer songwritery Leonard Cohen manic depressive saucy lyric sort of way.

But the other band! My god, they were DESIGNED BY ROBOTS TO MAKE ME HATE THEM!!! Jazz/Funk self proclaimed "soul fusion" - read TOTAL FUCKING TOSS. There was a cunt in a backwards kangol hat sitting down waggling his head like a fish to the groove. And a five-string bass. And two tossers playing horns - one playing an ELECTRONIC HORN. And the other WEARING DARK SUNGLASSES INSIDE, AT NIGHT, IN THE BLOODY HALF LIT SPITZ.

I have got the point where I can almost see the point of certain bits of jazz, bebop, the more accessible reaches of freejazz/spacejazz and the like. But music like they were playing last night just provokes some kind of elemental KILL KILL KILL utter revulsion and disgust. And now I remember why I hate jazz.

It just sounded like 70s cop show soundtrack music. Like drinking vanilla flavour straight out of the bottle, so bland it actually hurts you.

Black Box Recorder at the BA2. First support band were Silversuit, local band, bit like the Bluetones but not as good; then went off to interview John Moore during the second act, klang, convinced I wasn't missing much, then found out a week or so later that they're Donna Matthews out of Elastica's new band, bit annoyed; then BBR, who were brill, the album can sound a bit patchy, but live just makes it all work beautifully, plus Mr Moore was a lovely, lovely man. Straight Life dragged like a mother though.

I hardly ever go to shows that aren't my band or my gfriend's band anymore, it's pretty sad. I was going to go see Windy and Carl a couple of weeks ago but I always get lazy and decide I don't want to go. SO the last show I saw was Times Ten (gfriend's band) who of course fucking rocked. Before them was the Randy Savages, typical punk rock, even still had some ska parts in there. The bass player was tall and dopey looking and took his shirt off to show off his pierced nipples. Before they played, he picked up the guitar and was playing like Enter Sandman and Eruption and shit. We left after Times Ten because the next band was this notoriously horrible "shocking" punk band that we totally hate. Yeah.

I saw bobby conn last night. no band. just him and a CD and a guitar sometimes. quite different to the last time I saw: no long-haired, METAL-looking guitarists and no live violin.

he was very entertaining and FFWed the disc a few times in a funny way and he does have a great voice!

we didn't get there until a quarter past ten, avoiding the support of OUTHUD. a friend said they were crap.

most disappointing moment: some dudes in the crowd saying something I couldn't make out and bobby looking up and saying 'yeah...what do you think bush's cock LOOKS like??' and the dudes, like, guessing and bobby staggering backwards, giggling. 'hee-hee...a...PRETZEL!'

Last band I saw was some nameless dub act; two in fact. They were both great. Alex Patterson from The Orb DJ'd and some guy MC'd over the top too, which was ace as well. They were all support for Lee Perry at The Lemongrove; unfortunately I wasn't very well (dodgy stomach flu thing) so had to leave before Mr Perry came on. Fortunately, he's now an addled old man, and I didn't miss much by all accounts.

On Wednesday I'm seeing Genius/GZA at The Lemongrove, which is either gonna be awful or amazing. Either way it'll be an experience.

I saw Ani D about a week-and-a-half ago; she put on a fuckin GREAT show, although a little short. Of all the performers I've seen in my life take the stage solo-with-acoustic-guitar (Neil Young, Beck, Bob Dylan, Jeff Tweedy, Taj Mahal, Jewel [blech], etc), she's easily the most vibrant and comfortable onstage.

I haven't gotten to go to nearly as many concerts lately as my band has been playing a lot of them ourselves. Now, if we could just start playing concerts to crowds rather than audiences, y'know?

Two weeks ago I drove down to Olympia to see the Aislers Set. They were great, and it was a very intimate show - the stage was so small that the Wyatt and the new keyboard player had to set up on the floor. Didn't care for opening act Hella very much, and thought the Quails were OK...just OK.

*Spoon - Poppier in person than on records. not a bad show, but hoping for more energy.
*Les Savy Fav - Uh, expecting *less* energy? Damn good show. Naysayers keep quiet, we already discussed this.
*Yo La Tengo - More rockers than expected. Damn fine show.
*Tin Huey - Chairs and tables in a rock show belong, not. The band was on fire - the crowd was sitting comfortably.

There was the big annual Penn State free rock festival on saturday night.

I saw ten minutes of Bubba Sparxxx. He holds his pants up at the front and claims to have high-self esteem despite inability to get the crowd to shout his name. His friends did wave towels.

I missed the Get Up Kids cuz I was getting the drunkest I've ever been without passing out. Wilco impressed me at first by doing their thing despite boring the audience. Then they started boring me and I left to go harass my ex-girlfriend (I feel bad about that). Though walking away I realized that very few bands wouldn't have bored me, especially since none of my friends were there (except for the older ones who wouldn't have been moving around even if the band wasn't so boring).

Buzzcocks, Shepherds Bush Empire, Sunday night.

I've probably seen Buzzcocks about a dozen times over the last 26 years but this was, if not the best, certainly the tightest, most energetic and most agressive performance I've ever seen them give.

A real crowd-pleasing set too with all the best of the old stuff plus a few from the (excellent) new album, all at 100mph and straight from one song to the next in a Ramones stylee.

Calla, Camden Barfly, the sixteenth. Actually really wanted to see them on the 18th at the Water Rats, because it's my favourite venue, but I was leaving the country on the seventeenth, so it was fairly impossible (and then of course found out while away that the Datsuns had played where I was the night I arrived and I could have gone, if I had only known). Took my brother, who then bitched at me all the way home because I hadn't told him how fantastic they were enough times, or something. It's his own fault for not trusting in the fact that my taste in music is impeccable.

Dear lord, but Calla are good, and so well suited to that time of (tiny, pub-backroom-style) venue: all dark and claustrophobic and shimmering. And sold their records off the stage afterwards, which was excellent as I haven't been able to find anything but Televise over here.

Anticipating Hot Hot Heat in a couple of days (have been told they're not much cop live, but I refuse to believe it because I'm addicted to that album), and then the mad May week in which every single band seems to tour the UK at the same time. Including Radiohead. Watch me die of fangirl.

I saw meu and Mertin Grech about a month ago at the Oxford Zodiac. Meu were good - lots of indie-pop, with the enphasis on the indie. Good tunes, and the classic let's-leave-the-guitars-leaning-against-the-amp finish Quality.

Grech was horrible. Like a more annoying Muse. Avoid at all costs.

Common Market, a Seattle undie rap group that I don't like one bit, but have somehow ended up seeing three times, which is actually more than I've seen any other act. Their DJ seems like a cool guy though. The rapper, on the other hand, strikes me as a self-serious asshole with an amusing beard, who thinks changing the lyrics of "Come Together" to be about Bush is a really good idea. But then again, each time I've seen them, the backpackers have eaten that shit up. That was about a month ago.

tv on the radio + subtle

subtle was mostly entertaining and ridiculous, they got old after about a half hour. loaded jokes leading to songs as the punchline, skit-like monologues in between songs, lots of visual props held up during certain lyrics. the dude who plays drum machine for them is pretty amazing. (plays the drum machine live by hitting the buttons) the last song they played was a cover of shellac's 'prayer to God' and it was pretty good.

guitar problems for TVOR during the first 2-3 songs, then they hit a pretty nice groove for the rest of the set and rocked it out. total MBV-wall-of-sound mode for most of the show, which was awesome, but i thought that their very best moments were when they let the songs breathe a little bit more to start out and then dropped the sonic boom. if i had a complaint, it was that tracks like 'i was a lover' and 'let the devil in' were (slightly) less interesting as MBV tributes than they are on record, especially when they could have been used to contrast the wall-of-sound thing they had going. they didn't even play the bassline from 'let the devil in', which is the best part of the song! surprisingly, those songs still mostly worked out so it's a pretty minor complaint.

i saw the tvotr/subtle show in vancouver several days ago. it was actually quite similar to 6335's description, although i apparently liked subtle a lot more than he did. i was so impressed by them because they basically eliminated every problem that has plauged live rap shows since the sugarhill. and yeah, the shellac cover was sweet. it was the first time a live performance of a song had made me genuinely uncomfortable.

tvotr were good. the wall of sound 6335 mentioned was totally present. they always shout out to the pixies, and i never heard it until the show. it was like joey santiago was playing rythm and lead at the same time. they didn't play my favourite songs (i was a lover, king eternal) and i was kind of choked about that. but the rendition of the wrong was was fucking choice. they turned it into a total rockabilly song. it was way faster and more snare-heavy than on record. i loved it.

The Dunedin Resound Festival. I don't understand Mother Goose, but the Clean and Sneaky Feelings were great. I'd never heard Sneaky Feelings before, but the few songs they played were lovely, esp. "Not to Take Sides." The Chills were quite enjoyable, as were Delgirl, who only played for 10 minutes. Gestalt Switch were decent, as were Onanon, who got a lot better when they lent vocal duties to people other than the lead singer.

subtle did sound fantastic -- clear vocals, crisp tones, solid grooves. i've seen them once before and the same thing happened, they started to grate on me after 30-40 min. i should also mention that when i say they were ridiculous, i thought that was mostly a good thing..although it probably is that very thing which eventually makes them start to grate on me. starts to feel like a episode of MAD TV or something

If this were a competition, I'd have beaten all'yall's asses easily: Last show I saw was in 19fuckin98: Diamanda Galas at Massey Hall. (Possibly the only performer I've seen who didn't play an encore - bless her! - even tho the crowd "wanted" one.) Why the drought? Well, I don't drive; live 20 miles away from the city where the bands all play (double my distance of 7 years ago), which would mean 3-4 hours spent on three buses and one subway; care little for much of the current music scene, and have never been a overly huge fan of (most) live pop music (with a few exceptions.) I'll definitely put up with that 4hr commute if the right performer comes to town, but it'd have to be someone crucial, someone I've never seen before like MX-80 or Cecil Taylor or another similarly aging jazz legend.

I saw Grabba Grabba Tape on Monday. I had to because I was putting it on. They're a duo from Spain who play really fast short synth-punk OTT-ness. I tend to describe them as "Daft Punk meets Melt-Banana" if I'm in a hurry. Anyway, they were cool and people dug them, including all these leave-the-kids-at-home-take-the-next-day-off munters who bundled in after seeing Faithless in the arena up the road and were completely nonplussed for 10 or 15 minutes

A couple of months ago, The Young Gods for a special unplugged acoustic guitar & light drum kit concert. Their repertoire was rewritten for the occasion by Vincent Hänni, who joined them onstage. It was fun seeing them play like that as Franz is a former prize-winning guitarist who never uses the instrument live with TYG save for occasional generic pop-strumming à la "Skinflower". Hänni was also a pleasant surprise as he's better known for Pan Sonic-like frequency manipulation than flamenco- or improv-style guitar action. The songs became simpler, poppier and much lighter.
