No Doubt - Running
Nas - I Can
Good Charlotte - The Anthem (duhhhh!!!)
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life (not sure this would make my top ten or anything, but I wanna hear it again)
I'm With You - Avril Lavigne (this would definitely be on it if not for the line "I don't know who you are," which makes me assume the song is just a poetic justification for a random hook-up)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 3 May 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted - She Said No
Meatloaf - Couldn't Have Said It Better

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 3 May 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheeky Girls - Take Your Shoes Off

(I agree that "no good advice" is pretty good, except for the cringe-worthy spoken bits at the end, have they learnt nothing from Atomic Kitten?)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 3 May 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

missy elliot - 'gossip folks'

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 3 May 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite like that new Good Charlotte song, the one with all the old folks in the video.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 3 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was semi-disappointed by "Vexed," but with setting such a high bar at the beginning, etc. etc. . . .

- Timberlake, "Rock Your Body"
- Bergheim 34, "Random Access Memory"
- Killer Mike, "A.D.I.D.A.S." but even "Rap is Dead," for no good reason
- maybe "Hai Hai," though it's just a good loop
- what sounds like a single on the Barbara Morgenstern Nichts Muss
- Nas, "I Can" (no really)
- Bangkok Impact, "Don't Be a Badboy"
- "Sleeping Aides and Razor Blades" by the Exploding Hearts, which is just a Material Issue single by guys who decided to dress like idiots instead of looking like Material Issue. . . .

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 3 May 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Nivea, "Laundrymat!"

Electric Six - Danger! High Voltage
Panjabi MC - Mundian To Bach Ke
Killer Mike - ADIDAS
TATU - All The Things She Said

These are all rather smashee and will prompt a four-way clusterfuck for the next Focus Group. The following won't, but are all bloody great in any case:

The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Psychosis Safari
The Delgados - All You Need Is Hate
Archigram - Doggystyle
The Hunches - Lisa Told Me
Junior Senior - Move Your Feet
Moloko - Familiar Feeling
Black Box Recorder - These Are The Things
The Thrills - One Horse Town
The Futureheads - Carnival Kids
Fallacy - Big N Bashy

There must be more, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 3 May 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(What d'you think of that Morgenstern album, Nitsuh?)

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 3 May 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel in case u wanted to know, the good charlotte song is called girls and boys.

i think the JT and Girls Aloud songs are far and away the best this yr so far, but rosie ribbons- a little bit, Jlo- jenny from the block, and Tomcraft- loneliness, are very good too.

Lid, Saturday, 3 May 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Freeway - alright; and sean paul - get busy (if it counts)

dave k, Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of good choices here (Panjabi MC, t.A.T.u., Timberlake, 50 Cent), so I'll just add:

"Time For Heroes" by The Libertines (I like the fact that they're the first Nu Garage band to openly acknowedlege The Strokes as an influence, even tho I like them a lot more than I do The Strokes really; I dunno, I like the humility of that.)

"When I Get You Alone" by Thicke (whoever the fuck he may be.)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

off the top of my head(ish)

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Har Mar Superstar - "Easy Pass"
DJ Format - "We Know Something You Don't Know"
The Roots - "The Seed 2.0"
Richard X and Liberty X - "Being Nobody"
Junior Senior - "Move Your Feet" (also best video of the year so far)
Radiohead - "There There"

Also the beaty drumming at the end of the "Beautiful" video by Snoop Dogg was pretty ace, too.

I like the way how only one person has mentioned "Seven Nation Army" yet.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

but i liiike eet...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Zongamin - Spiral

Mil, Saturday, 3 May 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(Cozen, I'm still working through it: only just downloaded based on S.F-J's recommendation.)

I didn't know the Tomcraft stuff was current: I'd definitely second that. I have no idea when any of the garage stuff is actually from: Fijit's "Garage" was last year, right?

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 3 May 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't "Mundian To Bach Ke" several years old?

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 May 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, hell, if we're splitting hairs, "Danger! High Voltage!" is well over a year and a half old, I seem to remember.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 May 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was going to say--Danger! High Voltage! was on several people's LAST year lists too. I'm still going to put it on mine because it's still quite popular but we shouldn't get into arguments about time frames because that kills like half of the lists.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Beautiful- Snoop Dogg
In da Club - 50 Cent

I also think that I like the new Radiohead song, but I've only heard it twice, as opposed to the above two, which are on the radio about 10 times every hour.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 4 May 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe people aren't raving about "Get Busy" every minute of every day.

Anyway:

1) Sean Paul - Get Busy
2) that last track on the Michael Mayer Peel Sessions, whatever it is
3) Mis-Teeq - Scandalous

heaps more obv. but these three rule supreme.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 4 May 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Talk Talk - "It's My Life (Liquid People remix)"
Sean Paul - "Get Busy" (I agree. Great song!)

How is "Danger High Voltage" a year and a half old???

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 4 May 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah Whatmore - Automatic

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 4 May 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I could rattle off a big list of dance vinyls, but as far as "proper" singles that actually charted in various countries go (excluding remixes, etc):

Ugress - Loungemeister
Alphonse Brown - The Frunkp (perhaps 2002, don't know much about the French charts)
Tomcraft - Loneliness
50 Cent - In Da Club
Mr. Phillips - Who Wanna Make Chi-Ching!
Coldplay - Clocks
Busta Rhymes & Sean Paul - Make It Clap
Electric 6 - Danger! High Voltage! (indeed, originally released in late '01)
Room 5 - Make Luv (another 2001 release, and no matter how overplayed it's still cool)
Panjabi MC - Mundian To Bach Ke
Scooter - Weekend
Lemon Jelly - Nice Weather For Ducks
Puretone - Stuck In A Groove
Sean Paul - Get Busy
Snoop Dogg - Beautiful
The Roots - The Seed 2.0
E-Life - Watch Me
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Mis-Teeq - Scandalous
Plummet - Damaged
Planet Funk - Who Said
Cygnus X - Positron
56K ft Bejay - Save A Prayer (cheeeeeeesy but it works somehow)
Klea - Tic Toc

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 4 May 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

How is "Danger High Voltage" a year and a half old???

First I heard about it was from irregular board denizen Maura at the start of 2002 or so, and she already had an mp3 from a single release or somesuch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 May 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, danger high voltage is pretty old (relatively), and pretty forgettable (IMHO).

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 4 May 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

utterly forgot Pendulum, which is an horrendous error cos it's amazing, and also:

Uncut - Midnight

which has received no love on ILM at all. This is not fair.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 4 May 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Pencil me in with Tim as someone who is amazed that more people aren't bowing in awe at Sean Paul's genius. "Get Busy" is mind-bogglingly wonderful.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 4 May 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You won't hear disapproval from me:

Sean Paul - "Get Busy"

Also:

R. Kelly - "Ignition (remix)
White Stripes - "Seven Nation Army"
Snoop - "Beautiful"
Justin Timberlake - "Rock Your Body"
TATU - "All the Things She Said"
Kreo - "Burn For You" (I think this is last year, but I only heard it on the radio a month ago)
All American Rejects - "Swing Swing"

Vinnie (vprabhu), Sunday, 4 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the panjabi mc tune is several years old. but it was released in the uk properly 11th jan. or so this year.
it's just been around for ages in one form or another, including big in germany last year.

scottn, Sunday, 4 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't Ronan give some love the way of that Uncut song?

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 4 May 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

R Kelly 'Ignition (Remix)' is single of the year so far for me, until next Monday of course.

ss, Sunday, 18 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Beautiful"-Snoop Dogg
"No letting go"-Wayne Wonder
"Mundian to bach ke"-Punjabi MC

Michael B, Sunday, 18 May 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

if these aren't singles they oughta be:

Electric Six: "Gay Bar"
Audio Bullys: "The Snow"
Groove Armada: "Lovebox"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: "Maps"
Cooler Kids: "E Is for Everybody"
Todd Edwards: "Beckon Call (2003 Remix)"
Yo La Tengo: "Today Is the Day"
Hi-Fi Hillary: "Work It" [remix of Missy w/Meat Beat Manifesto + a touch of Duran Duran; sounds GRATE]
The Postal Service: "Nothing Better" ["Such Great Heights" is the actual single but this is the best song on the album; this year's "Digital Love," I swear]
Killer Mike: "Akshon (Yeah!)" and "A.D.I.D.A.S."
Freeway f/Jay-Z and Beanie Segal: "What We Do..."
!!!: "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)" [dude's voice is seriously annoying but the track's great]
Freaks: "Where Were You When the Lights Went Out"
Luomo: "So You" [the remade "Tessio" is the single, but this is the best thing he's ever done]
The Rapture: "I Need Your Love"
The Diplomats featuring Cam’ron & Hell Rell: “This Is What I Do”

not bad for only 1/3 (the lame 1/3) down, and obviously I missed stuff, and, and, and...

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 18 May 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really loving "No Letting Go" - it's amazing how totally different it is to "Get Busy" considering how annoying uniform some riddims are (eg. Bollywood). I never would have thought a tune so relentlessly hedonistic ("Get Busy") and one so sappily sentimental ("No Letting Go") could come from the same starting point.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 18 May 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"No letting go" so much better than "Get busy" and gets nowhere near the amount of lip time! No fair!

Dan I., Monday, 19 May 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

also the ll cool j remix of 'no letting go' is surprisingly good. i think there's a lil mo one too?

Chip Morningstar (bob), Monday, 19 May 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

and dont forget lumidee!

minna (minna), Monday, 19 May 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 19 May 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget lumidee feat odb!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 19 May 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

DMX -- X Gonna Give It To Ya: i sing along to the "fight these tears" part every time.

Sharia -- Ladies: This is like Madonna's "Music" if she were 20 years old and hired southern bounce producers.

R. Kelly -- Snake: The "two gorillas" part gets me every time and the stop-start percussive build is fantastic. Also the triplets help.

Madonna -- American Life: You know the drill.

Good Charlotte - The Anthem: Somebody please tell me where the riff is stolen from.

Girls Aloud- No Good Advice

50 Cent - PIMP

Jay-Z & Panjabi MC - Beware Of The Boys

Molotov -- "Frijolero"
the Notwist - "Pick Up the Phone"
Panjabi MC feat. Jay-Z - "Mundian to Bach Ke (Beware of the Boys)"

chuck, Monday, 19 May 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked "In Da Club" until I realized that the only reason I was into it was because it's 8 million times better than "Wanksta". Now I want it gone.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You're a wise man, Mr. Perry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"No Tengo Dinero," A.B. Quintanilla y los Kumbia Kings featuring El Gran Silencio and Juan Gabriel
"Beautiful," Snoop Dogg
"Up, Up, Up," Rose Falcon
"El Sinverguenza," Los Tucanes de Tijuana
"I Know What You Want," Busta & Mariah
"Don't Wanna Try," Frankie J.

never loved Wanksta

Neudonym, Monday, 19 May 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

At the moment, my top 10 looks a bit like this:

Delgados - All You Need Is Hate/Mr Blue Sky
Fallacy - Big & Bashy
Wildhearts - So Into You
Panjabi MC - Mundian To Bach Ke
Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Psychosis Safari
TATU - All The Things She Said
Junior Senior - Move Your Feet
Black Box Recorder - These Are The Things
Sean Paul - Get Busy
The Thrills - One Horse Town

Still everything to play for, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything Matador has released this year.

Jon Cryer (Jon Cryer), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

And immediately R Kelly, Un-Cut, The Futureheads, Killer Mike, B'dingfield, Shed 7, The Hunches, The Hidden Cameras and Moloko all come tearing back into frame... argh...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'd totally forgotten about "Up, Up, Up" by Rose Falcoln. That's definitely in the running.

Two questions:
1) Do the Wildhearts actually have hits in England? If so, I'm jealous. (I thought they broke up a long time ago or something.)

2) Is the A.B. Quintanilla y los Kumbia Kings featuring El Gran Silencio and Juan Gabriel "No Tengo Dinero" the same song Los Umbrellos did a few years ago? If so, I want to hear it right now.

chuck, Monday, 19 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck: that's a no on "No Tengo Dinero" -- although it's a cover, it's a cover of Juan Gabriel's song, not those insane Umbrellos. Although you really do need to hear it anyway, if but just for Cano Hernandez' insane raggamuffin espanol guest rap. I've been telling you, man, cumbia is this year's metal!

Neudonym, Monday, 19 May 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dudes and dudettes--what the frick is that new Timbaland remix of "Rock The Boat" and where is it from? It could be old, 'cept nobody seems to have heard it previous to the last few days. That's some straight-in-at-Numero-Uno shit. I must know.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Monday, 19 May 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so sad, I want to make the entirety of _The Scream_ as my top singles of 2003.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 May 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Do the Wildhearts actually have hits in England?

Apparently they just charted at 21 this week over there, so yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 May 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Woah, because it ISN'T a remix of "Rock The Boat"--it's Kiley Dean's "Make Me A Song," and it is killing.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Monday, 19 May 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

god that !!! single really is fantastic

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold it, I forgot 'Bucci Bag', dance tune of the year so far....that deserves to be there too

Michael B, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!, "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story)"
ARE Weapons, "Don't Be Scared" & "Hey World"
Beyonce, "Crazy in Love"
Killer Mike, "ADIDAS" & "Akshon (Yeah!)"

Glass Candy, "The Last Time"
Joe Budden, "Pump It Up"
Bonecrusher, "Never Scared" (it's an A.R.E. answer record)
R Kelly, "Ignition"

(there's trillions more but that's all that comes to mind as of now)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

50 cent - In da club
Massive Attack - Special Cases

russ t, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

search IMMEDIATELY: Elephant Man, "Fuck U Sign"

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That R Kelly track is from Hell. I really hate it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't it bother anybody but me that the !!! guys sings as bad as the dork in Big Audio Dynamite used to? Plus, they play "funk" like a hippie jam band; they think all you need is a bassline. (And a horn section, maybe? I forget.) So....*what* exactly is good about them? (I mean, I got that single in the mail. It has a cute TITLE, I guess. But even the title is pretty embarrassing, being so outdated and all.)

chuck, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

>>the !!! guys sings<<<

= either "the !!! guy sings" or "the !!! guys sing." (You decide.)

chuck, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Nic from !!! can't sing at all. Even when the music's good enough to pull off the We're a Funk Band, No Really We Are vibe his hesitant sing-speak just makes them sound like corny indie fucks. Which is why I hated the !!! record and why Out Hud consistently kicks !!!'s ass. But with this single (and when I say single I mean the first song only)(the second cut might be their worst yet which says A LOT) Nic's lame-itude (musically, mind you -- in real life he's a sweetie) is masked by the guitar (which Tyler still plays too cleanly) and the GROOVE and all that other hippie shit. Which ain't doing much to explain why I like it, except that when I listen to it I'm generally drinking and sitting on my porch playing cards and it feels RIGHT.

Also, the whole progression that the song goes through is pretty tight.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And when it erupts at the 4:20 mark it just sounds so fucking good and the shivers down my spine are so loud that Nic's lame strain gets cancelled out. So the key is VERY SELECTIVE HEARING!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And at 7:10 when Nic tries for the Bootsy Collins-reminiscent "shake that butt" line it's as bad as Warren Beatty trying to rap in Bulworth but (ha!), again, that bass line is so fucking good I DON'T CARE!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

plus cowbell

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

PLUS COWBELL!

(thanx for the save, blount)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe I've just been listening to indierock for too long (don't answer that) but the vocals don't really annoy me that much.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

indierock's the AAA for true SELECTIVE HEARING MASTERY!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Earlier, I would've said "Ignition (Remix)" but with Beyonce's "Crazy In Love", humanity has peaked.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I just heard the Beyonce single on the radio.. very, very nice.

Also, did Bubba Sparxxx switch producers for his new stuff? From what I gathered on another board, it sounded like el-P was producing him this time around and that just didn't sound right.. or good.

minna (minna), Monday, 26 May 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Minna how can you possibly like "The Champions"????

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My fave single right now is probably 'It Ain't a Game' by Sharky (& Jammer?) of Nasty Crew. I think Luka may be right about it being the best gutter garage track yet. It is certainly the best urban-orientalist track I've ever heard, and perhaps the most blissed-out thing in hardcore since ambient jungle. It's totally heartbreaking, kinda like the Avalanches. It makes me tingly and dewy-eyed every time. Sharky combines the innocent hopeful stars-in-his-eyes thing he did in the I Luv U remix with his unique brand of 110% determination, and makes that track sound like merely a cute novelty in comparison. Someone needs to circulate an mp3 of this STAT!!!

Keith McD (Keith McD), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

because it goes on forever, has twista in it, they are carrying on like pork chops and are as melodramatic if not more so than freddie (maybe my queen hate has something to do with it?) and... "spend a lot of time in hampt-i-ons" reminds me of the kind of joke my dad makes.

minna (minna), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

keith where did you hear it if not on mp3?

minna (minna), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Luke sent me 2 incredible pirate radio tapes!

1 percent of one

Brian Mowrey (Brian Mowrey), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

oh somebody mentioned percents before my post. I meant the song. for the list. thank you.

Brian Mowrey (Brian Mowrey), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

someone who lists 1% of one as a single doesn't get the concept of 'singles'.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls Aloud - "No Good Advice" is awesome, but for full effect see the video too (best video evah or what?):

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

aside from the broadcast, i like the looks of yr mix, blount. and jess' list looks great too. maybe i'll make a preemptive 2k3 mix this week...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess should be a summer radio disc jockey or something. Hey I seem to remember you despising !!! about a year ago, what's changed?

ss, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the broadcast is there for 1) more girl 2) more rock, plus I eat that stereolab shit up like bannana pudding. my sister's all 'where's timberlake, fucker?'

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

s club juniors' new single Fool No More has an amazing chorus, accompanied by wicked dance moves.

b2k- girlfriend (the remix with all the woo woo woos).

Lid, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

blount, i think yr sis needs to hear "camel toe"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the !!! single really won me over, despite my reservations...first of all, the singing fucker keeps a lot quieter than i was lead to believe, and i am a sucker for edge-stylee guitar waves and cod punk-funk

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"lead to believe" = my rantings up thread?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

well, actually it was the combined luv of u, blount, and matos that made me download it...although chuck's reservations initially reinforced my own, but we're both old men

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I was listening to it in may truck yesterday, and the vocals were alot more upfront, to it's detriment. still, cowbell.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

dying to know what's on those five cd's, here, jess

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That !!! track is surprisingly good yeah. The Beyonce / Jay-Z one is so much better than "Bonnie & Clyde". TaTu are putting "How Soon Is Now?" out as a single next, bless 'em. My #1 is still Killer Mike I think. Oh and "Ignition" can be Number One until Doomsday as far as I'm concerned.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Monica single is great. Who does the production? Is it someone from the Roc?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i started work on a mix this weekend, and prospective songs from this not yet mentioned include: raphael saadiq's "stil ray," electric 6's "synthesizer," monica's "so gone," fanny pack's "cameltoe," calla's "strangler" and chevelle's "send the pain below" (which might be the best rock radio song since deftones' "change" or foo fighters' "everlong" -- the more i listen to it the more i'm convinced it's a pony express record outtake).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 June 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Archigram is from last August or so, sorry I wanted to prove my hipster credentials.

Agoria, best new act around. La Onzieme Marche and Kofea are fucking wicked.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i wanna count Archigram as this year as well! must add 'Crazy In Love' and Junior Senior's 'Boy Meets Girl' to my list also

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely agreed on Agoria, 11me Marche, Kofea, I'm Simply Not There and Sky Is Clear are all fantastic.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 9 June 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan i already said a few are from 2002 that i didnt hear until this year :P

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 June 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

<now I know how everybody feels when I praise Limp Bizkit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 June 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why it got deleted, but my sentence was in reference to Yancey's baffling declare of approval for "Send The Pain Below."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 June 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Junior Kickstart by the GO! Team.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Micc: I like "Send the Pain Below" mainly for the verses, where the singer d00d totally overdoes it, but oversings in a way that bears NO RELATIONSHIP to the song's actual chord progression. I really like the way this sounds (his voice is v. nice) cuz it reminds me of Shudder to Think (one of my fave bands ever). The "sounds like suffocating" bit I could do without, but the song's really great.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

This year is ALL ABOUT "Cameltoe".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It absolutely is. The rest of the record's just as good too!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ashanti's "i found love" is great!

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/music/ch/content2.jsp?cts=1&src=http://demand1.stream.aol.com/ramgen/aol/us/aolmusic/artists/universal/ashanti/84y3khxd_i8309uf.rm

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

so the production is great (my friend who sent me the link sez "ashanti does negroclash"), but what's most striking is ashanti's voice cuz it's so forceful and graceful and confident. even though she doesn't have whitney's voice, she sings with the comfort and coolness of "how will i know." it 100% works.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(the beyonce song 87% works)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(you are bonkers, Yancey) (especially for ranking any Deftones song ahead of "Back to School")

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

this has been such a good year so far. i feel vaguely burnt out.

Jane's Addiction - Just Because

hear it Here! [automatically loads into a multimedia popup]
http://www.capitolrecords.com/janesaddiction/justbecause/

epic, glorious rock - I love the trippy psychedelic guitar sound.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

50 Cent "In da Club"
Panjabi MC f. Jay-Z "Beware of the Boys"
Justin Timberlake "Cry Me A River"
A.R.E. Weapons "Don't Be Scared"
FM Knives "Cassavetes Vs. the Moneygoround"
Celine Dion "Drove All Night"
Foxy Brown "Yeah"
DMX "X Gon Give It To Ya"
Lasgo "Something"
Toby Keith "Beer For My Horses"
The Electric Six "Danger! High Voltage!"

(The Toby Keith song is as revolting as Christgau says it is, and I won't argue against docking something for expressing terrible ideas - ideas are part of what music does, after all - but it'll fall off my list by Pazz & Jop time anyway, so I won't have to really debate myself on this issue. But I'm alerting you to the fact that it's a powerful song, so you can listen to it, gag on it, take it on.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the Beyonce song is good, but really, is it any better than the Amerie song from last summer?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

also, I think now that Twista's version of the Punjabi MC track is much better.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"the Beyonce song is good, but really, is it any better than the Amerie song from last summer?"

That's tough. If you factor in the awesome "Richcraft Remix" of said Amerie track it becomes *really* tough, esp. 'cos I could imagine Beyonce being inspired by that. Still waiting for the Amerie album to get a release over here.

I think Beyonce's song will be more inescapable though, which will prob. work in its favour. On a social/dancefloor level I could see it being this year's "Hot In Herre" if that slot wasn't already taken by "In Da Club". Maybe this year's "Work It"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the Jane's Addiction link. Wow. Genuinely good. I feel like I'm 15 again.

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

1. hitman sammy sam - step dad
2. big brovaz - favourite things
3. tATu - not gonna get us / ne ver ne boisia
4. busted - year 3000
5. senor coconut - smoke on the water

that is all

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the new beyonce single may well be better in a diviash sorta way

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

like i asked myself "why did of all songs dangerously in love need a new version?" and then i realized "it needed a new version MOST"

& kogan yeah that toby keith song is powerful ugly. is the foxy song you mean the one with foxy? coz that's like 2 years old & if you like it you need to hear the whole broken silence album. tables will turn is a way better track i think, btw.

thanks for the celine pointer tho. i forgot how cool a good poptrance track is.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

how do people feel about the lumidee tune?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i like it but it seems to half-there to really "love" but not ethereal enough to really be entranced by

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it bores me until busta comes in, and then it gets really good but then it gets boring again. i think i like the *idea* of the song more than the song itself.

(you listen to the ashanti?)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, are we talking about the same song? the diwali one? (also my mp3 has some dj doing the whole echoed "new shiiit" over top at varying intervals. can't decide if this makes it better or worse.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe superficially i keep thinking of it as the R&B 'Grindin'. or it sounds like a bootleg that's not as good as the (nonexistent) original.

Honda, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm talking about "never leave you" with busta and fabolous

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

http://search.launch.yahoo.com/search/lsearch/video?p=lumidee

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

which is a remix if i'm not mistaken

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

and i just listened to it again and suddenly i'm liking it way more than i have

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the mix i have doesnt have either busta or fabolous on it

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

that lumidee song is so great it's even better without its beat, let alone endless subsequent afterthought collabos. in this sense also a much better comparison (ie totally dead on exactly the same) for amerie last year

neither will ever surpass these hits

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

mr chips's #2 single of the year btw!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

and check missy's version of crazy in love

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

wherezat?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

radio!!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the odb bite of lumidee is better i think. "dirt mcgirt -- welcome home".

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 12 June 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I just found out it's a single when I flipped past the video last night, so I guess the title track of Good Charlotte's album is my new number one single of the year. Actually, it's either that or "Go With The Flow." It's close.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 June 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"& kogan yeah that toby keith song is powerful ugly. is the foxy song you mean the one with foxy? coz that's like 2 years old & if you like it you need to hear the whole broken silence album. tables will turn is a way better track i think, btw."

Actually I kinda like "Run Dem" or "Na Na Be Like" a bit more than "Tables Will Turn" - which is great but where is Foxy's patois?

"neither will ever surpass these hits"

Chip did you hear Amerie's "Need You Tonight"? It's fabulicious.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 12 June 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it is kind of great that we live in a 2003 where "fuck u sign" is just another good single.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Mitch! I was thinking something along the same lines the other night - when it comes to bizarre off the wall ethnodelic uberpop we're living in a total context of abundance. "Get Busy" is finally getting played around here too - about fucking time.

Anyone who likes the Indian-dancehall stuff should check the Hindu Storm riddim - MASSIVE! Maybe dancehall's best attempt to come to grips with India yet.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the dirt mcgirt bite is fucking awful.
chip is right and lumidee - never leave you acapella is the song of the year!

minna (minna), Friday, 13 June 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like fabolous ft. ashanti - into you too

minna (minna), Friday, 13 June 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

there's some bhangrified stuff on the forthcoming black eyed peas album too.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 13 June 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
That Lumidee single is Young Marble Giants/Lisa Lisa heaven.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenna, "Freetime"
Beenie Man, "My Dickie" (maybe not a single, but worthy still)
Whatever the Foxy Brown single is

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Freetime" is actually my least-favorite of the Kenna tracks. I'm all about "Hell-Bent", "I'm Gone", "Man Fading" and "Vexed And Glorious".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus christ andy is right about the ymg/lumidee connection

i like that linkin park single more every time i hear it

the video for the new bubba sparxxx is nuts

Monica's "Get It Off" narrowly missed -- that's going to be a single at some point, right?

Second Monica-related qn: What's the difference between her marked car (?) and her unmarked car? Does the latter just not have a vanity license plate?

Sami Koivikko and Luciano: Either of these producers could put out an LP that would wipe the floor with The Present Lover.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Justus Kohncke - Weiche Zaune

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that chingy single is f-ing great. 2 days worth of m2 (after a six month drought) and i'm already od'ing.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

god yeah the video for bubba is fantastic. i couldn't believe that they were seriously going to rip off the whole Cohen bros movie until like halfway thru.

and timbo (i assume) is more bluesy than ever. but i do find it ahem, disingenuous to relase "bubba talk" as yr. big single from your FIRST album and then come crying back about how ppl. take you for a gimmick!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Cozen if you want to contact me off-board you can hit me up at the address right thurr:

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean its sorta a post-em tactic i guess. release a song about how yr. a bad influence as yr. first single then get a career out of denying any such thing.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that lil jon and the eastside boyz song..

and the p diddy/nelly/murphy lee track on the bad boys ii soundtrack.

of course I can't recall the names of either.

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 4 July 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ewan Pearson remix of Ladytron's "Evil" is fantastic!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 July 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

duane, Friday, 4 July 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Ewan Pearson remix of Ladytron's "Evil" is fantastic!"

What Pearson style is it in? & can we nominate the guy for remixer of the year already?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 4 July 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Great year for singles.

One thing is for sure: Alfred doesn’t like Sean Paul (he’s wrong, obviously).
