I knew that -- H&C officially disbanded sometime in the mid-'90s and Mark Seymour the solo artist entertained the Australian Olympic athletes back in 2000 -- I was just inquiring whether they were just obscure or practically being erased from music history.
Occasionally VH1 Classic surprises me by throwing in "Throw Your Arms Around Me" in the "All Star Jams" block, and I do remember seeing "Is There Anybody In There?" and "Talking to a Stranger" (I doubt I can express to anyone how much I adore that song) early in the year, but it doesn't seem as though they get much attention these days, aside from the odd mention of, "You know, Russell Crowe is a big Hunnas fan."
Well, yeah. I think Russell is a fine actor, and I even had a crush on him for a couple of years ca. "The Insider", but, um, so? I would rather there be more fans around here of the Hunnas, or that the local radio station that plays '80s music included H&C in their playlist.
Oh well. Just dreaming.
Now onto Geir's post:
I don't think Men at Work are "erased". I think as long as there are people such as myself out there who at least remember "Classic MTV" and "The Big '80s", Men at Work will never be erased. The Belle Stars? Didn't they do "Iko Iko" for the "Rain Man" soundtrack? I liked that cover. Bucks Fizz? I don't think ANYONE could forget THEM. And anyway, weren't they going for a long period of time after the '80s were over? I thought they were the British equivalent of Menudo. Kajagoogoo? Never forgettable, not as long as "Too Shy" keeps getting airplay on your everyday generic "best mix of the '80s, '90s, and today" radio station. Blancmange? You might have a point there. Really horrible, too, as I thought Blancmange were a good group. Classix Nouveaux, being erased? Over my dead body! Sal Solo & co. will NEVER be forgotten, not if I can help it! *attempts evil cackle, coughs*

There is an entire international underground of Jellyfish influenced "soft" powerpop acts.

Erm, well, all people seem to remember of them these days is "Making Your Mind Up", those detachable skirts, winning the Eurovision, and Cheryl Baker. Nearly everything from "Making Your Mind Up" onwards seems to have been erased from history, which is a shame because every song after that from the original line-up was superior in every way. I got the "Greatest Hits" (circa 1984/5) on vinyl secondhand, and "Making Your Mind Up" doesn't appear until the second last track on side 1, and is immediately undercut by the awesome Sparks-like "When We Were Young" which follows immediately after. Before is the equally impressive "Now Those Days Are Gone", which features the group in acapella for almost the opening half of the song! The opening track was actually their biggest hit "My Camera Never Lies". "Land of Make Believe", which probably the only other song most people remember from Bucks Fizz, is relegated to the opening of side 2.
No if and buts about it, Buzz Fizz was definately hard done by!!!!

(either)...means you all aren't totally daft and acknowledge that, even though they've never had one platinum nor even gold album, are a very influential band who also is still writing, recording, and performing very amazing music right now.
(or)...proves that history has erased them, so much so that their existence has been completely wiped out of your minds, and thus you can't even remember them existing to notice they're "disappearance".

CHAKK : Ticking Time Bomb 12"
How great is this !
Has been 20 years since i heard this, and its sounding as relevant today as it did then. (even in crappy 128kbps)
Not many bands finish their time with their best record, but I'd say Chakk were pretty damn close.
2 brilliant independant 12" > 1 Crappy Major Album + associated singles > One final perfect independant 12"
not that strange career path for many bands in the 80s i'd say.
Other than the obvious sonic links to !!!, did the band get any modern day love with the explosion of post-punk-funk copyists a few years ago ?
― mark e, Friday, 21 November 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)
i'd really like to know more about the earlier industrial-goes-house tracks (or the vice-versa scenario), early minimal synth wave, and the like. are there any good resources on this?
not that history has erased this stuff, it's being championed by the likes of optimo/betty botox, soft rocks, and a variety of other discerning djs. i just don't know where to start digging, i guess, beyond the obvious cabaret voltaire/throbbing gristle/coil stuff (which of course is incredible)

Buck's Fizz will never die in this household
As a former Eurovision winner, they are guaranteed eternal life in certain circles. Just do a Google search for "Eurovision" and you will know what I mean.
― Geir Hongro, Friday, 21 November 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)
Geir utterly otm about the ESC. Hell, any finalist counts as perpetually unerased because of those circles.
As opposed to, say, Kinky Machine.

― snoball, Saturday, 22 November 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
If it wasn't for Eurovision, Buck's Fizz wouldn't even had been formed. :)
Another call here:Not that they are completely forgotten, but compared to the critical hype surrounding them at the time, Paisley Underground bands such as Dream Syndicate, Red Guitars, Green On Red and The Long Ryders are referenced surprisingly rarely these days. I mean, those were pretty much the favourite bands of mid 80s hipsters. Along with R.E.M. - the only of those bands that have really made it big and assured themselves a huge place in history.

Lots of pre-Nirvana "alternative" (or, should I say "modern rock." "progressive?") bands who made it onto daytime MTV, but failed to establish an indie niche to fall back on when their 15 minutes faded. There are many such bands, but I'll promote King Swamp as the official representative for the gang.
My reason for the pre-Nirvana clarification is that, once the 90s alternative feeding frenzy began, even the most forgettable of the also-rans (Dig, say) were more conspicuous in their one-hit-wonderness.
Also: The hit bands at the tail end of the hair metal era were not invited for nostalgic VH1-style reappraisal. I think the last band on that bus may have been White Lion, with Bulletboys and Enuff z'Nuff clinging desperately to the rear bumper, leaving the likes of Slaughter, Firehouse, Tuff & Danger Danger to slip comfortably into the void. Nelson is the one exception to this that I can think of, but thats just b/c they were Nelson.

NIG HEIST, the legendary, confrontationally perverse punk trolls led by Black Flag roadie and associate Mugger, were liked by no one in their time. Childish songs about sexual depravity of all stripes and characterized in live performance by a baiting self-righteous un-self-righteousness earned them the animosity of "real" punks everywhere they played while arguably out-punking them all. Has anyone ever not cared as hard as Nig Heist did not care? History has yet to reveal the answer. This is their original 1984 Thermidor LP featuring Greg Ginn (who has co-writing credits) and charming artwork depicting Howdy Doody feeding a little girl what must be a carrot.

Recently learned about a 90s duo called Unmen, one of several projects Nick Cash has done over the decades -- but while I knew about pragVEC, the Lines and Fad Gadget (he played with Tovey for some years in the 80s), while Cash has been part of the Members reunions since about ten years back, I'd just never heard about Unmen at all, and the only reason I learned about them was that they have a track on an issue of the Volume CD/magazine series from the 90s I just picked up for cheap. Turns out they have a couple of interesting sounding albums, including one on Some Bizzare, so I've ordered them, but talk about an act that totally disappeared down the memory hole:
https://www.discogs.com/artist/92584-Unmen
(Cash's partner in the band, Giles Perring, has been part of a London group called Echo City that is apparently still going as of a couple of years ago, though its own Discogs page is strictly late 80s/90s:
https://www.discogs.com/artist/1490863-Echo-City
And then there's the Perring/Cash collaborative albums in turn:
https://www.discogs.com/artist/656172-Giles-Perring
In sum, who knew?)

Cake features heavily here: that stage where you think they aren't popular anymore but are actually way more popular than they were when they had "buzz"

which is a massive shame as i had such high hopes, but the legal chaos that kicked in clearly killed the bands groove.

― Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 08:37 (nine years ago)
If you're listing one hit wonders then you're doing it wrong (and several of these are only one Judd Apatow scene away from immortality in any case). But Moloko is ridiculous given how regularly Sing It Back and The Time Is Now seem to pop up in all sorts of extremely mainstream contexts.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 08:57 (nine years ago)
Like I think to qualify you need to be an artist with a reasonable level of profile and/or credibility in a particular genre but who has been retrospectively airbrushed out of the conversation. The early 90s is chock full of these artists but Snow sure as hell wasn't one of them.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:03 (nine years ago)
'Murder She Wrote' and 'Tease Me' still get played out all the time.
Therapy? is one that I think about a lot. It's not that they've been forgotten entirely, and in fact I think they've had a recent revival but for a band who were at one point a MASSIVE deal, they sure got swept under the rug. That goes for British heavy rock music in general, I guess - Three Colours Red sold loads of records but the only song I remember is an embarrassing b-side called www.sad
― TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:12 (nine years ago)
Wildhearts, Terrorvision, Skin, Skunk Anansie, Little Angels, Headswim can be added to that list: all Kerrang! staples from the early 90s, now forgotten
― Neil S, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:18 (nine years ago)
In that case, I think a better thread for discussion would be the one that I started a few years ago:
Artists/bands that were once quite popular, yet nowadays are mostly ignored in canonical history books
― Tuomas, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:21 (nine years ago)
If you look through the NME albums-of-the-year list, which I think is a reasonable enough indication of stuff they thought was going to stand the test of time, the early 90s gives you albums by the 3rd Bass, Electribe 101, The Fatima Mansions, The Goats, Madder Rose and Gallon Drunk, none of whom afaik are listened to by anyone who wasn't there at the time or even referred to in 'lol early 90s' type articles.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:23 (nine years ago)
I found that Tricks of teh Shade was something being played by people I hadn't expected to several years after the fact. I think I discovered them by chance thanks to the cd truning up cheap in a Borders cd section. & only recognised taht somebody was playing them a while after that. But could be I'd remembered the name from reviews/coverage from the time.
Would love to get hold of live sets by both them and New Kingdom both of whom played live with bands.
I have a friend who I think is still involved with Gallon Drunk and James Johnston has wound up playing with the Bad Seeds over the last few years. But then again that isn't in GD capacity..
― Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:32 (nine years ago)
Should say though that Tricks of the Shade is the only Goats lp with the full magic as far as I can see. I think a central member left before the next lp.So if people are coming across anything later they may not get what made them so special.
But do love Tricks
― Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:39 (nine years ago)
More nineties stuff mostly remembered from Now compilations and free magazine CDs I have cherished:

― TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:42 (nine years ago)
Eurythmics first lp In The Garden is pretty essential if you're not already aware.Nice mix of Brit folky stuff , psych and New Wave. Band on it is half Blondie and half Can and it's produced by Conny Plank.
Finally got a great remaster a few years ago and got rid of the tinniness that was on the original cd.
― Stevolende, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:47 (nine years ago)
xp I don't think The For Carnation belong in that list, they're more in the obscure post-rock bracket rather than actually forgotten/passed over. Narcissism of small differences I know.
― Neil S, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:47 (nine years ago)
K7
"Come Baby Come" still gets played in various places, the last time I heard it was just a couple of weeks ago in the Suicide Squad movie. So clearly people still remember that tune, and it's not like anyone knew anything else by them even in the '90s.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:58 (nine years ago)
The Goats is a good one. All I can remember about them is a few bars of 'Rumblefish' and one of Ant & Dec on Saturday morning TV saying they were a big fan.

― Matt DC, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:02 (nine years ago)
Les Rythmes Digitales is one of the most successful producers of the last 20 years, not sure how that makes him "erased from history."
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:02 (nine years ago)
Like the Eurythmics were literally in the History of British Pop segment of the London 2012 Olympics. That's about as far from the premise of this thread as you can get.

I guess Dog Latin meant that his solo music rarely gets played anymore, and most people probably don't even know it's the same guy who produced those Madonna hits?
(xpost)
― Tuomas, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:07 (nine years ago)
:-O that's pretty amazing, I had no idea. It's like the Police, the Pretenders, UB40 etc - huge, huge late 70s/ eighties bands who went down in history as AOR staples but turned out to be a lot spikier and more interesting than that in the early days.
― TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:09 (nine years ago)
xp I mean, he was never really that big as a solo artist, there was a minor amount of buzz around "Jacques Your Body" when it was used on that car advert, but I'd say that's if anything more well-remembered than similarly minor hits of the same era.
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 1 September 2016 10:10 (nine years ago)

Can movies be discussed in this thread? I was just reflecting on the fact that "American Pie" was a gigantic smash hit, people quoted from it all the time, it was seen as the "Animal House" of its moment, and now? Kind of gone, right?
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:15 (nine years ago)
other than the 300 straight to DVD sequels under the name American Pie? hell local art movie house just showed it as a 'cult classic'. it's ubiquitous, people still say "oh, Stiffler's mom", MILF, an existing term, became part of mainstream lexicon and is still there. history enhanced, not erased it!
― Neanderthal, Thursday, 1 September 2016 14:19 (nine years ago)
OK re MILF very good point. "Stiffler's mom" is not something I've heard referred to in a decade but OK point taken.
