four weeks pass...
I don't know how to explain this, but when I'm listening to the White Stripes all my problems kinda go away and I feel really sane, happy and mature. Other albums affect me more in different ways (make me sad, make me giddy, make me air drum), but the White Stripes (specifically DeStijl and Elephant) make me feel...okay.

I know I'm not making much sense, but can anyone relate? Or do they have a personal band that makes them feel calm and collected?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 6 June 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Good question Anthony. I gotta think about this one (and avoid my instant mental reaction of trying to list "relaxing"-sounding bands).

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was in NYC recently I was at a bar & they were playing tons of music I was into 5-10 years ago & I found this immensely calming for some reason.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I have two albums that always do that for me: The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo and Galaxie 500's Copenhagen. But I know exactly what you mean, Anthony.

I said this on some other thread not long ago, but if The White Stripes had a standard "good" drummer, we wouldn't be talking about them right now. Her style is an ESSENTIAL component of the band.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

Elephant was one of my favorite albums during college. I played the hell out of that album. Even though I didn't like Jack's opinion on music, I respected his musicianship. Also, Meg was a great drummer for the sound they were going for. I thought ilxor frowned upon the conventional, rockist approach to playing an instrument.

Anyway, here is hoping they do a Jay-Z and get back together in two years. Haha.

i like minimal stuff. and the kinda minimal approach here (guitar + drums) w/ big riffs and simple drums and not much else works pretty well for this stuff. plus, i was in lolcollege when White Blood Cells and Elephant came out and who didn't love those albums as a late teen early 20s budding record collector??

Good time to quite IMO, they were last decade's thing. I don't think they ever put out an album I loved start to finish but they certainly had more fantastic songs than any 00s rock band I can think of except the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Alfred OTM, they did some good stuff but it's weird to think of how they were like THE rock band of the last decade.

considering that even Jack said Meg drummed "like a caveman or a little kid" I think it's OK to say she wasn't very good and that it was just part of the band's high concept conceit, whether you enjoyed it or not.

Yep, let's all defend the troll again.

don't"

But I guess if I have to clarify that I wasn't being 100% serious when I posted "fuck off and die", then I've got bigger problems with my entire posting style.

You've got much bigger problems than your posting style, apparently.

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Thursday, 3 February 2011 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

Did you just not read my last post? It wasn't a serious thing dude. I am seriously annoyed by your tendency to pop into threads only to toss in an insult, without any real attempt at engaging, but whatevs.

Dude? Who isn't letting it go now?

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 February 2011 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

I propose settling this with a knife fight behind the gym after school

"I am seriously annoyed by your tendency to pop into threads only to toss in an insult"

I dont think that I do this, and i certainly dont go out of my way to be insulting, but hopefully your mommy taught you that sometimes not everybody's going to agree with you, and you're not always going to get your way. You're the one calling me a troll and telling me to die and being a fucking baby. I'm already over it.

You apparently are "over" it. One facetious comment versus calling me names in like three consecutive posts? Buy one clue please.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 February 2011 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

gosh i never thought the jon 2.0/bill magill breakup would be uglier than jack white/meg white but here we are!

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Thursday, 3 February 2011 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Hah, that would have meant that I at some point liked/respected the dude.

Anyway, enough of him, back on topic. I sort of have a feeling that they won't ever reunite. I think Jack will remain stubborn for a few years and then it will reach a point where Meg won't want to bother. I guess it depends on how well she stockpiled her cash from their peak.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 February 2011 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

yeah both should be pretty financially secure I would think. and Jack's got plenty to keep him busy

bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 3 February 2011 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

I'll probably be proven wrong at like, Coachella 2016, but I feel like their only "reunions" will be like some sort of Live8 telethon type of thing in 15 years.

I am really sad that I never got to see them live though.

I played a show once where we got a terrible review and they compared my drumming to Meg White. I took it as a huge compliment!

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 3 February 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

The 00s' most boring, overrated band have split up, and have done so by posting - as someone noted upthread - an incoherent, doubtless narcotics-fuelled load of gibberish as a farewell message on their website.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 3 February 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

mostly i think it's wack that the #1 rock band of the 2000s (and i wouldn't dispute that they are in most senses) dealt so comfortably with dull blues-isms

Some of us like the blues-isms. And think that the way blues-isms were essentially made verboten in the late 70's was a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and are glad that the #1 rock band of the 2000s felt comfortable to indulge them rather than stick to no-arse, unswung, straight 8th, Julie Andrews major-key plod. And like the way the White Stripes went back to the source, skipping the Claptonisms and covering Son House, and the appealing way the backdoor man mythology of the blues contrasted with a guy who was "finding it harder to be a gentleman everday" and "wants to be the boy who warms your mother's heart". Some of us anyway.

Féile Kuti (ecuador_with_a_c), Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

sorta interested in this, had no idea they covered so many dylan songs: musicruinedmylife.blogspot.com/2011/02/white-stripes-bob-dylan-white-album.html
would be cool if they worked on an album together.

tylerw, Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

ooh "I Threw It All Away"!!!

d/ling that shit

bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

I never minded them, but I haven't bought any of their records either. They've always seemed to me to be the last band that will get inducted into the RNR Hall of Fame before the doors are shuttered forever on that place in 2023.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

kind of imagine dylan would be white's ultimate white whale, in terms of producing an album. he's even baiting dylan by having wanda jackson cover "thunder on the mountain."

tylerw, Thursday, 3 February 2011 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

eh "I Threw It All Away" is just a couple verses tacked onto the beginning of "I Ain't That Lonely Yet"

meh

bien-pensant vibe (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

i have more stripes records (lots of singles) than i thought i did. still think most of their ballady/gentler stuff is generally their weakest (even the stuff like got her in your pocket, jack sounds like hes trying too hard to be earnest/tender) but i give him some respect for being one of the few mainstream rockers to say something about immigration (even if it did sound like a bad prince lyric).

I love all six albums. "the nurse" is the only song that gets skipped often.
