Konono No1 - "Tradi-Modern" - This shit is unreal

Konono No1 is a Congolese band playing traditional African trance music amplified with homemade microphones and scrap-part percussion. The distortion produced by this equipment makes the music even more heady than it already is. I'm pretty impressed.

you can download an mp3 and watch a short quicktime at the site

kinda reminds me of the first track on Rebore Vol. 0

i can't seem to find anywhere that carries it. if you find a place, lemme know. i've read it's supposed to come out in summer?

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 16 May 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This seems like it should be good. I can't get the mp3 to play for some reason. Looks tempting anyway.

(I imagine a scenario in which these guys become overnight commercial successes, invest in proper equipment, and immediately lose their appeal.)

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 17 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, if you could hear the quicktime video, it's really, really dirty sounding. the mp3 that you can download is a lot cleaner, but it still has some grit on it. i would love it if the cd was just a live recording with two mics in the center of the "wall of amps", but i know it won't be. still can't wait till it comes out. i emailed the label asking about it. will report back later.

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 17 May 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't it say "before the end of 2003?" i can't get the page to load...

isn't crammed the label that originally reissued "ere mela mela" by mahmoud ahmed sometime in the 80s? good on them.

update taken from http://www.christopherporter.com/ (why they never emailed me back, i dunno?)

Here's the word from Crammed Discs on the forthcoming Konono CD:
--
Hi Chris,

We heard from Louisa @ Six Degrees that you liked the Konono excerpt that's on our site, and that you were wondering about our release plans. We also noticed an enthusiastic comment about Konono on http://www.christopherporter.com/

Konono No. 1 is actually only one of many "electro-traditional" bands which Vincent Kenis recorded during several stays in Kinshasa. As explained in the presentation text on the site, Konono No. 1 are part of a whole movement of bands who moved from the bush to the suburbs of Kinshasa, and went on to amplify their instruments.

We're doing extensive work with several of these bands, and have already gathered many hours of recordings.

We will be releasing a Konono No. 1 album around November, and are also finalizing a "various artists" album, to be entitled "CONGO ELECTRICO (Buzz & Rumble from the Urban Jungle)", which will feature tracks by several bands. This should come out in early 2005, and will include tracks by Kasai Allstars, Kisansi Congo, Sobanza Mimanisa, Konono No. 1 and several others.

Meanwhile we are also releasing a 12" with two Konono No. 1 tracks, through a small UK label called Fat Cat, which generally deals with experimental & electronic music. It's interesting that many people in those areas seem to be very excited by these recordings, and we're working on getting remixes done by interesting European & US producers.

Please get back in touch if you want additional info.

All the best,
Marc

Hi Jason,
thanks for the tip -- actually we're pretty keen on them already. in
fact we're getting a live album in next week, and then the one you're
talking about, the studio album, we'll have when it comes out in

more from christopherporter.com on December 1

Konono No. 1
"Ditshe Tshiekutala"
Lubuaku (Terp, 2004)

Thanks to Mark from Subterranean Distribution in Amsterdam for giving me the heads up that Konono No. 1 finally has a CD out. It's not the one I wrote about on Sept. 2, but rather a live soundboard recording put out on Terp Records, which is run by Terrie from the Ex. I once wondered aloud if Konono was the Fennesz of the Congo? Now I just call them The Very Reverend Konono No. 1 because they deserve that honorific---there's nobody like them.

Mark also writes, "You might dig on a little video footage shot during Konono's tour with the Ex here in Holland. The clips are pretty short and arbitrary, but they capture a tiny bit of the Konono ass-shaking machine live."
Clip one
Clip two
Clip three

The MP3 and videos are hosted on Subterranean's Web site, which is where you can buy Lubuaku.

Also, Crammed Discs is listing that Konono's studio-recorded Congotronics 1 is for sale now, but I'm not sure where to buy it in the U.S. because according to this list there seems to be no distro over here. But I'll put on my parachute pants and Sherlock Holmeslice hat and find out for y'all. Man, I'm just earnest like that, what can I say?

Meanwhile, Konono's home country continues to eff itself up with war.

eman (eman), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand the fuss. Or rather I hope the fuss is not just cause 1) they're associated with and promoted by the Ex, 2) there's some extra fuzz in the sound, 3) homemade-instruments-made-from-junk, and 4) on top of all that, the music isn't bad.

I have only heard the mp3 samples and seen the video, and I think they're good, but the online excitement seems out of proportion (ugh, how common is that sentiment). I'd be particulary interested to hear someone talk them up who can compare them to other Congolese/West African recordings.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Unfamiliar rhythms and other other musical form with interesting distortion that makes it all sound sort of Rebore-esque, and a nice story to go along with it ("homemade-instruments-made-from-junk"). I think that's why I like it. It doesn't sound like any Congolese music I've heard, but I don't know too much about Congolese music.

RS, Friday, 11 February 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

xpost - it doesn't occur to me to care why others fuss or dislike or listen or eat or don't eat something. personally i like distorted things, this includes things not usually heard with fuzz/distortion. i'll leave the socio-legitimizing (i made that word up) to the musicologists/proctologists.

eman (eman), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

it doesn't occur to me to care why others fuss or dislike or listen or eat or don't eat something.

Ahh, I don't really believe that, given that you are posting and reading here. It would be boring if we all just agreed with each other all the time, right? Wondering why people get excited about things in onde direction or another is interesting, I think. Anyway, no problems, I hope.

personally i like distorted things, this includes things not usually heard with fuzz/distortion

That's what I was wondering about. I'm not criticizing that sentiment, just wondering if there's something else unique here that I was missing...

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah i was bullshitting. it would be interesting to know how popular/relevant they are in their own country compared to other trad. bands.

but in re: "online buzz" surrounding things in general, it seems hard to qualify/quantify this sort of thing.

eman (eman), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

felt compelled to comment, even though (in the interest of full disclosure) i'm 1) associated with the ex and 2) i like fuzz in my sound.

i think that part of the attraction to konono no 1 comes from the honesty of their sound, and a kind of return to pre-synth african music where rawness and rhythm take precedence over superclean production values and digestability...this may be their primary distinguishing feature when compared against the last 30 years or so of musc from Congo/Zaire (rumba, soukous, etc).

The other critical thing about konono is seeing them live...it's that crusty old adage about "not being able to capture their live show" on CD...for one thing, it's 3 hours long. and for another, you're dancing the entire time, even if you "don't normally dance." indie-kid armfolders, 60-year old Ex fans, and everyone else in the place was sweating and booty-waggling until late. i'm sure it helped immeasurably that it was a rock club, certainly nothing like the museums that most "world music" gets performed in. and lastly, the sound. there's not a single thing about it that distances you from them...it's more like the magnets in their homemade pickups are so strong that you're drawn toward the stage. you can't imagine being in the room with them and not coming closer.

anyway...just wanted to give you a first-hand testimonial, and assure you that what buzz there is (if any) developed out of the best intentions: to expose more people to unique, passionate music.

markemorse, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I love this record. Thanks for posting markemorse.

many of you probably already saw this, but christopher porter's blog reprinted a very lengthy letter from Vincent Kenis (one half of the wonderful band Aqsak Maboul) talking about how he came across the band, the logistics of producing the record, recording techniques etc.), I was almost expecting to see these as the liner notes but for now they're only here: http://www.christopherporter.com/2005/01/konono-no.html

I'm guessing there will be a seated area with an open floor in front.. again, I've never been there, but Con Works has hosted everything from theatre to very experimental stuff.. I can't imagine they would be as stuffy as the SAM as far as the seated thing. Also, you can bet that the Wall Of Sound/SCG crue will be there to DSETROY THE OTHODIOXIDY if everyone is forced to sit down.

I saw some music thing they did at ConWorks a while back and it was definitely seating-optional. Esp. given the high ceilings and somewhat echoey acoustics this is going to be NUTS. I am very very very excited.

when antony/johnsons played world cafe back in February he seriously thought people were there on dates and had no interest in him. he was mistaken, but audience enthusiasm doesn't exactly communicate to the stage, since you're facing someone across the table. it's worse when you've ordered Pabst and they served you Bass. so much for saving money - i had to pay with a credit card! they have a cafe upstairs where dancing, mingling, etc. happens.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Saturday, 5 November 2005 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god. that was a tremendous fucking show. It's pretty much everything I hoped it would be... things kicked off very well from the very first note, but the momentum kept multiplying and multiplying and before i knew it, by end of set, i had just witnessed pretty much a 35-40 minute song set-closer where everyone was "on" the entire time, including the drummer, who kept at it for that long, and did occasional loud snare hit fills to even pump things up more. Every single member on stage had his/her own personality. Just joyous all around.

And, very luckily, Consolidated Works staged this in the room with the seating in the back, and a huge empty space for dancing in front by the stage. That space was pretty much filled up (and hey, the senior citizens/handicapped who were attending the Earshot jazz festival got seats up front too, so everybody won), and everyone was revelling everywhere.

If you find out that the place Konono is playing where you are is seats only, I highly encourage you to make and wear a t-shirt that says "I skullfucked Paul Simon at this venue" to that show, because to host Konono N*1 and NOT provide some space for dancing is just a travesty.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Saturday, 5 November 2005 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

(ok, you don't have to wear such a t-shirt, but at least think about it, if need be.)

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Saturday, 5 November 2005 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

I have it. It's great.. although i could be wrong, but those Konono tracks are also on Congotronics vinyl as well, right? But hey, you get some Dead C locked grooves too, and it's easy to find cheap these days.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Saturday, 5 November 2005 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

As for the show last night (the first one at least):

There were many kids at the show.. very young kids in fact. During a moment, the singer smiled and danced looking at a toddler trying to clap to the music, despite her not being able to quite walk yet. It was really an "awwwwwww" moment.

..which is to say.. don't expect this to be a LOUD show. Rhythmic? YES, ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY.

So, if you have kids and want to see this show with your kids & family, you absolutely should. I think the band encourages it. Though, the venue acoustics will differ from city to city of course, so bring earplugs just in case, but this is a very kid-friendly show. Thought it was worth the mention.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Saturday, 5 November 2005 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

I am currently heavily lobbying the joe's pub staff to provide some dance space as I am in complete agreement with donut on this matter.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 5 November 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think going to this show and not dancig would pose a SERIOUS fucking health risk. Your head face feet and arms would likely swell up to three or four times their original size.

GREAT show. The drummer, playing a single snare and a makeshift three layered cymbal, was probably my favorite member, but everyone was amazing. Easily one of the two or three best shows I've seen in recent memory.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Saturday, 5 November 2005 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Possibly the best show of the year for me. The first two songs, 7-8 mins each, felt like warmups; the 40-minute monster that ended it just kept escalating and building, when snare guy hit a roll about halfway in after the groove had mellowed some I thought my head was going to fall off.

A big thumbs down to Seattle for not cluing in the out of towners that there is both a 500 Boren Avenue and a 500 Boren Avenue NORTH. I got to the 8:00 show a half hour late but I stayed for the 10:30 show and DANCED MY ASS OFF so it all worked out. My wife told the old guy in the band "J'Taime" in the bathroom and he said "OK". A truly amazing show...

The show last night was hott. I cannot believe the drummers played as long as they did without collapsing. The final song must have gone on for about an hour. And then they came out for an encore, but the venue wouldn't turn their lights or microphones on. Really great show.

Here's an interview a friend did on Friday:

Konono No. 1 cranks up the Congolese thumb piano
Aaron Cohen

Mawangu Mingiedi just wanted to be heard. And, like everything else in the Congolese city of Kinshasa in central Africa, fulfilling even this simple desire was not easy. But the musician's ingenuity, tenacity, and a surprising series of events wound up taking him further than he ever imagined.

Ever since Mingiedi was 10 years old, he played a Congolese likembe, also called a "thumb piano." The likembe is a traditional instrument that Mingiedi first learned from his father more than 60 years ago. In the mid-1960s, he met some other likembe players and they formed the group that became Konono No. 1 -- and those metal keys never sounded the same.

Much of Konono's repertoire is based on the trance music of the Bazombo people. This sound features repeated chorus lines and frenzied percussion that can induce listeners to dance. Mingiedi's challenge was getting attention above the urban clamor in Kinshasa when his group played on the streets. So Konono hooked up their likembes to microphones and amplifiers that they built themselves out of abandoned car parts.

The wildly distorted, compelling results of this experiment in home-made electronics can be heard on "Congotronics" (Crammed Discs). When the CD was released last year, the music media in Europe and the United States were amazed that the essence of punk rock's noisy do-it-yourself aesthetic had been expressed so far away. Chicagoans can hear the band when Konono performs at the Logan Square Auditorium on Nov. 11.

"I thought that amplification would promote my group in the neighboring streets when we played in public," Mingiedi says through a Lingala-English translator. "I never thought it would carry my sound all the way to Europe and the United States."

While Konono is just beginning to reach an audience over here, Mingiedi says they've had a reputation in Congo for a while. The group's name--which means "stiff"--comes from a line in its popular song, "Lufuala Ndonga," that retells an ancient proverb about avoiding rigor mortis. After Mingiedi's nephews started their own group -- also called Konono -- audiences gave his band the primary number. He also mentions that some notable Congolese soukous musicians, such as Ray Lema, picked up on Konono's influence.

In the early 1980s, a Belgian music fan named Vincent Kenis heard a Konono tape that found its way to French radio. After his initial amazement, he began searching for the group, a journey that involved a sequence of visits to the Congo before Kenis was finally able to locate them, 20 years later.

By that time, Kenis had become a record producer and had the means to accurately document Konono's performances. He realized that instead of bringing the group into a slick, sophisticated studio, the music should be recorded in Kinshasa in a situation that was as close to home as possible.

"It's much better to get a situation where everything is working--socially, dynamically, and somehow try to manage," Kenis says. "That gives me the liberty to modulate a bit and put it in perspective. The distortion is really a part of their sound and there's no use in taking it away."

Kenis and other European-based African music experts knew an open-minded rock audience would appreciate Konono's unique use of electricity. So the group was presented with musicians who had similar inclinations, even if they happen to live on different continents.

When Konono first visited Europe about three years ago, they went on the road with the iconic Dutch punk-rock band the Ex. Even with the language and cultural differences, the groups bonded. Ex guitarist Terrie (just the single name) had visited the Congo in the past and believes that Konono's constructing musical instruments from scraps can be understood as a means of reflecting and transcending the nation's ongoing chaos.

Still, Terrie says he wasn't prepared for Konono's volume.

"It's really incredible," Terrie says. "They were using our amplifiers, which they were playing twice as loud as we did. And for them, this was completely normal."

As the two groups toured the Netherlands, Terrie noticed that Mingiedi watched the Ex closely each night.

"After the sixth gig, we came back and he was sitting in our van," Terrie says. "He was singing all our songs and then said, `Ah, now I know about traditional Dutch folk music!'"

Jess, you better get to the Kennedy Center early if you want to be able to see Konono. Those free 6 p.m. Kennedy Center Millenium stage shows attract lots of tourists who sit in the rows of chairs that go nearly right up to the stage. They'll be surprised! The Kennedy Center usually tries to limit Millenium stage shows to an hour, unfortunately. It will be interesting to see what happens. There's a sizeable Congolese population in the DC area who turned out for Kofi Olimide out at the U of Md a few years ago, but I don't expect that that audience will have heard about this show (but who knows).

They were great. Not close to my favorite show of the year, but hell yeah it was great. In Chicago they pretty much launched into a full-on forty-minute groove before switching things up. I kind of wished the kit player was mic'd a bit louder. Things did seem a bit tentative at first, but there was a certain point -- maybe twenty minutes into it -- when it seemed like everyone -- the group and the crowd -- all finally got on the same page. It just seemed like things magically opened up, the playing got a little fiercer, the dancing got a little hotter. All-in-all a fantastic evening.

Actually witnessing the reunited Meters on stage the next night blew my mind a bit more though :-)

You had to practically have your head on stage to get the psychedelic tinny phasing effects that make the recordings so enchanting. They did bring their own awesome sound system -- a pair of big army surplus (M*A*S*H-style) loudspeakers with "Mega" painted inside the cones.

Emotionally, the band seemed shell-shocked, punctuated by moments of beaming happiness. They seemed to have no problem carrying on long arguments while playing 20-minute songs. Of course, a lot of the facial gestures and body language were alien to me. A scowl could just as easily be a sign of sincerity, know what i'm saying?

I was really into "Papa," the 4'5" tank of a man pounding on tuned welded metal bells like he was chopping goatmeat. Old coot. Even the young dudes in the band would laugh when he came busting through.

As a percussion orchestra, they weren't entirely different than Ilê Aiyê (who came to SOBs two months ago), but the hipster quotient was off the charts. Swans, nnck, wfmu, illbient stragglers, mr t haircuts, you name it.

Also, a loopy cowgirl offered me a sandwich, which I thought was really charming.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I loved that Papa played exact the same pattern every single time he came in.

So many weird things about that set. It was action-packed. I was really pissed at the guy who passed up a dollar bill, because the optics seemed all wrong. Rude or something. Needless to say, the frontman didn't have the same reaction. In fact, he pretty much gave up being a singer for a long stretch to collect money from people. It got to be where it was rude not to pass something up.

Of course, he also got into an argument with the others, I presumed exactly because he'd stopped doing his job, but maybe it's the other way around.

The young guy got bored and left.

It seemed like at one point they were negotiating with their sound guy or soemone to keep playing. I thought they had lost the argument, because the drummers got into what seemed like grand finale-style moves (which was awesome--those two guys were awesome). The hand drummer even lost one of the bandages on his fingers he came down so hard.

But then it just kept going, drifting quite a bit. The crowd got tired too, I think. (Well, I got tired.)

I also thought the likembes were a little low in the mix, but I had assumed that was because I was right next to the drummer.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

(That reads a little over-critical. I had a great time)

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

I had an excellent time - really enjoyed it. Papa couldn't have been more stoic, off to the side and largely unlit for at least half the set I saw, yet he still seemed like the obvious front man. I loved when he took over the metal contraption and just started pounding on it. They all seemed reserved except for the guy in the hat and the woman -- but then again, what were they supposed to do? I liked their stage presence.

I wasn't there for the money passing set, which does seem strange - tacky.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

The late set was pretty awesome, although I agree it lost some steam towards the end. Also I missed the audience member giving them the first bill unsolicited. I thought the singer produced it himself in order to get people to donate - I assumed it was part of the act. But as I was off to the side I couldn't see the front of the stage very well, so I guess I missed the first gift.

But what I want to know is, how was the Eye/Hisham performance?

Gunderson10, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

okay. some of it was kinda middling noisy noodling. eye's got great vocalizations, but we knew that already.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

EYE was at the second set for Konono!
And for my money, the EYE show was fucking great. Like a mini-boredoms set. Details forthcoming for both.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

um, the passing out of dollar-bills to the performers is a long-standing tradition among groups from Africa and South Asia. It's a demonstration of respect on the part of the audience. It's not about the dollars themselves, but the gesture. Not sure why it's "tacky" -- I mean I know the hipster quotient is off the charts for these Konono shows, but I'd highly recommend occasionally checking out some other world music performances. There are some really great artists out there that don't put out records on the Ex's label.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

Stormy - the only reason I called it tacky was because I wasn't aware of the long-standing tradition - now I do, so thanks for setting me straight. (I've never seen that happen but that doesn't mean anything.) If the Ex's label comment was directed my way specifically, my interest in African music is all over the place, but thanks for the advice. I'm never too aware of what the Ex is promoting.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yea fwiw, I felt weird about the money thing, but I chalked it up to cultural differences.

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

xpost. Well, I see this exotic tradition all the time. It's called playing for tips. And I've been to the occasional show at SOBs, and sometimes it happens, sometimes it don't. I don't see any need to argue from authority in a forum like this.

But to address the point head on, what happens between the band with an audience in Kinshasa isn't quite the same thing as what happens with the same band and a New York audience. Obviously. And I've already said my first comments read a little harsh--ultimately it was fun, the rapport with the audience was great, everyone was unself-consciously and un-ironically enjoying the groove--but even so what harm is there observing that without proper context, a group of rich white beardy hipsters tossing cash at some poor Africans on stage could look a tiny bit tacky?

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Seeing this Sunday night at petit bourgeois cafeteria jazz palace. My guess is that it'll feel like someone rented out a funeral parlor for a birthday party!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

I was at the front of the stage. The speakers weren't connected to anything.

Here's a rant I ranted somewhere else earlier today:

Konono gussied up their show for America. No homemade amps. No homemade mics. The menacing air-siren-styled speakers on stage were not hooked up to anything—-they didn’t even have wires! They using an octave pedal ferchrissakes!

Essentially, the only reason Konono No. 1 gets to play in America is because they have a cool gimmick. No talks about what they actually sound like. Hell, what do they sound like? It’s not Afro-Cuban enough to be soukous, there’s not enough guitars to be chimurenga and too many mbiras to be juju. My boss says they’re just Congolese street music with a history in trance, but that ain’t gonna get people to buy $12 appletinis at Joe’s Pub.

No, Konono No. 1 boasts hipster cachet because they built their own equipment out of car parts. Accordingly, the crowd was mostly from the white nerd constituency—-all transfixed by band who didn’t bring their ingeniously re-gutted amps, the same amps that glitch out their sound into fuzzy bursts, making them kin-in-timbre to the Boredoms and Amps For Christ. I feel kind of duped that such a “must-see” event show was essentially just a damn good African dance band—the same kind that play here all the time, but I somehow never make it out to. The same ones that the hipsters dismiss as fodder for the socks-and-sandals NPR crowd who doodle kokopellis on the back of their stock portfolios.

I feel like a real schmuck because I haven’t made it out to an African dance show since Oliver Mtukudzi in Prospect Park last year. I’ve seen like five Growing shows in that time! Mtukudzi’s band was livelier and rowdier than Konono… and there were actual African people in the audience!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

And the ugly ghost of "authenticity" rears its head!

Cute meta discussion!

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

Konono is a great party band, great to dance to for awhile and then go get a red stripe and sit down and then dance some more. There is some cool and more complex undercurrents in the sound where the thumb pianos drift in and out of odd riffs, but basically it's five or six riffs played for an hour so it's not intensely cerebral and somewhat critic proof. It's a good time.
While there's a tradition of soliciting and throwing money at the performers (I think this is called 'dashing'?)of a whole lot of african countries, I didn't think this was a given for EVERY panafrican group and I wasn't aware that it was a part of Congolese tradition. In any case, yeah, if I was in Taiwan doing a show and they started throwing cash, you can bet your bazootie that I'd be workin' it. That's beer money!
I think some of the dissonnance has to do with the minstrel-like/stripper pole image of a white crowd throwing cash at the feet of a black band. Seems a little undignified through american eyes, I guess... but still! Beer money!
That chick that the lead singer got on stage was WORKIN' it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

After the EYE show, which was crazy fun (anybody played THE LIFT BOYS vinyl they were selling there yet?), I went to Konono and realized that I was standing directly behind EYE, who was boppin' along and really having a good time. The instant the band left, EYE rushed up and grabbed the thumb piano on the stage and started inspecting it! This caught the attention of a bunch of other stageside hipsters who recognized him and proceeded to rush over to say hi. Then the band came back for an encore and there was considerable chillaxing.

I have to admit, it was a very "Wait till I tell ILX!" moment.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to whiney -- oh noes konono = m.i.a. now

I actually see some good points in your post, only as far as other African groups being underrated... but that's it.

I've heard the rest of this argument template re: white hipsters going gaga over lucky "token" non-white group therefore group is overrated and their fans don't know anything else about other similar underrated groups therefore making the experience a disappointment even though the band have nothing to do with what their fans do and don't know anyway, blah blah blah

do knut (donut), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

a few xposts -This has turned into an interesting conversation though unfortunately that's partly due to my initial ignorance. Yeah, I also feel like Konono have entered the select group of world musicians, like Fela, Tony Allen, and Ethiopiques before them, who are acceptable to people who might sometimes utter things like, 'Yeah, I don't normally like world music but...' Same way Johnny Cash appeals to people who don't like country. Like when someone told me they didn't like something I was playing once because it sounded like that Paul Simon crap. Not real enough, I guess. Same person said he didn't care for Mapfumo because it reminded him of his hippie sister. In any case, people have to start somewhere and I feel like somebody who ventures out to a Konono show one year could easily venture out to something with less hipster approval the next.

Forkclove sums up my initial reaction to the money bit - that's the first thing that came to mind.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

fwiw, this is the first time I heard about a show where dollar bills were thrown, or hearing about band arguments.

I talked to a couple of guys who flew to the Seattle show from NYC for the Earshot festival, mainly to see Konono, and they were excited mainly because -- somehow -- they thought the band would become tired as the tour progressed, so they wanted to see the very FIRST show... which seemed really odd to me at the time.. but hearing these stories now, they're slightly prophetic, though I stress "slightly"

do knut (donut), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to tofu post--I was right next to that girl and she had it going the whole show. And the lead singer didn't coax her up or anything, she actually said out loud, "I'm goin up there!" Which was totally cool. And made even more cool when the older woman (who could work it a little herself) on stage took in her moves.

Other highlight: when the singer/whistler casually picked up the bells and murdered them.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

I have to admit, it was a very "Wait till I tell ILX!" moment.

haha, I was standing with Eye before the show and I thought it was pretty funny that I had heard Konono first as compared to V&infin&redoms and I got to see him hear them.

Then I thought of this:

What's the most "losing my edge"-like accomplishment you can boast?

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

more comparisons, every member seemed either happy or settled during the set for the most part when I saw them. The exceptions were the frontman and frontwomen who were the singers and dancers.. and the scowling guy wearing the U.S.A. cap in flannel who was practically a statue if it weren't for his really intricate handiwork and great backing vocal duties. Papa was the best... never has such a settled faced been so charasmatic. He was the last to walk off the stage, to which he got THUNDERING cheers and applause.. he turned around for a slight second, smiled and waved his hand at us in a humble "aw you shouldn't have" way, then started clapping slowly in a "yeah, i kicked ass" kinda way... all done in a reserved subtle way.

It was the equivalent of Ralf Hutter turning to the audience and smiling slightly and awkwardly after Kraftwerk played.. which, of course, is the equivalent of Pete Townshend smashing his guitar onto his amplifier knocking it down, and cutting himself severely with the wooden fragments of his former axe, storming off stage in a rage.

do knut (donut), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

somewhat critic proof.

These have become my favorite bands.

Some drunk girl standing next to me got so depressed about the money thing that she had to leave. They play in little cafes in the Congo, of course they're used to getting tips!

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Konono have only been marketed to an indie-rock crowd, hence you are not going to get many Congolese folks at the show. No need for any liberal guilt. But it also explains why this thread gets more postings than the African records 2005 thread. I also recall reading an article that said that back home they play on the street, and have done so for years, and that they're not considered a big deal by folks who like say, Congolese rumba star Kofi Olimide.

Konono's DC show is gonna be at the Kennedy Center. I doubt they printed up any postcards or flyers and left them at African music stores or restaurants in DC, so the crowd here may be mostly like the NY ones described above. But as I mentioned upthread I think, when I saw Congolese rumba star Koffi Olimide at the U of Maryland, just outside DC several years ago, the crowd was largely African. Whether that audience would be interested in Konono I do not know.

I have seen Africans pasting dollars on the sweaty foreheads of Nigerians and Malians and Senegalese and others at DC shows for years. But not too many white folks doing it.

But I am still wondering about this:

"Konono gussied up their show for America. No homemade amps. No homemade mics. The menacing air-siren-styled speakers on stage were not hooked up to anything—-they didn’t even have wires! They using an octave pedal ferchrissakes! ...all transfixed by band who didn’t bring their ingeniously re-gutted amps, the same amps that glitch out their sound into fuzzy bursts..." -Whiney G. Exactly. I understand what you guys mean. I just would like to read somewhere that Konono have said "We did not bring the equipment we use outdoors in Kinshasa because of blah blah blah..." Plus I assume that such equipment is part of what makes the Congotronics cd special to my ears, and is part of what made the producer and the Ex and others excited when they first heard them, so it is disappointing to read that we are getting a different show...

Occam's Reznor (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps the homemade equipment is not loud enough for the crowds that want to see them, and maybe the releases are just very loudly mastered recordings? And I doubt they'd fly all the way out here to play small art shacks -- where the homemade soundsystems would resonate best if that's the case.

I admit the show I saw didn't sound as "gritty" as the releases, but that's not the main reason I enjoy their music.. (different strokes, different folks, etc.)

They cleared the cafeteria tables for the show at World Cafe Live. A man who looked like Wilford Brimley jogged in place, waving his hands and elbowing me and K. Harris throughout the set.

It sounded good, even though the acoustics of the space render almost anything sterile. It's an aural autoclave!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

heya curmudgeon, are you going to the kennedy center tomorrow? i think my bandmate and i will probably be there. i keep meaning to say thanks for hipping me to the mulatu show - it was incredible, although the giant smiling picture of rev. sun myung moon did its best to weird me out.

ZR (teenagequiet), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yea, I will be there (with notepad as I am reviewing it). I missed the Mulatu show and it's interesting to hear that you liked it. A friend of mine who is real picky about acoustics went to the show and grumbled that it started late and did not sound good technically, so he left after a half an hour.

Jess Harvell said upthread that he's coming from Baltimore for the show, and I bet Konono fan Christopher Porter, from the Suburbs Are Killing Us blog and Jazztimes mag, will be there. Plus as I mentioned earlier, the usual assortment of tourists and senior citizens visiting the Kennedy Center to get some 'culture.'

curmudgeon (Steve K), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't really have any problems with the acoustics - m's vibraphone coulda been a little louder, but overall i thought the sound was just fine. it did start and end late, though, but that wasn't particularly unexpected. way fewer broken flowers-types there than i expected.

ZR (teenagequiet), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

I talked with Porter earlier, he's seeing K1 and BAUHAUS back to back.

The atmosphere left alot to be desired. You should have run up front and gotten the dancing started! Actually, the ushers would have probably shooed you away. There were lots of ILXers and local critic types doing the indie-rock head nod. I once saw a New York based Brazilian forro group leap off that stage and march past a sitting, pretty staid crowd for their final song, with a drummer pounding away on a marching band style held drum. About 10 people followed him as he continued down the halls and outside onto the plaza. Everyone else just stayed there in their seats wondering what happened.

The World Cafe Live! show wasn't bad! They took out the cafeteria tables! There was a small crowd, but it wasn't bad. The glowstick twirling ravers sucked. So did the Wilford Brimley character who insisted on jogging/dancing in front of me, regularly elbowing my chest to the beat! Exoticists/Orientalists = push since it was too cold for all cotton and sandals.

The band was great and v. charismatic. The NASCAR hats confused me.

eleven months pass...
Saw them last night at the Cedar Cultural Center here in Mpls...

really amazing. people like to throw around words like "joyful" and "life-affirming" but Konono really is.

Played pretty much 2 hours STRAIGHT...one endless groove that kept morphing back into itself, sort of like dance music where a melodic or rhythmic motif from like 5 minutes ago would reappear and then fade back.

I guess the sound was a little "cleaner" than usual because their sound system hadn't arrived from Europe yet, so they went through the regular PA.

Lineup was three thumb pianos, played by Awesome Happy Frontman, Man In Black Duster Who Kinda Looked Like Blues Legend Buddy Guy, and Grumpy Older Guy.

frontwoman did endless dancing and chipped in on vocals frequently, she can really move, wow i woulda been so tired!

three drummers...one on some wooden long african drums...one guys sitting down (who wore a soccer jersey and SCARF and tuxedo pants even though it was hell hot in there), and one (the youngest looking) on a number of metal cowbell type things and some homemade looking junkyard percussion stuff....

anyway, crowd was mix of usual hippies, college kids, noise scene dudes, and old dudes in beards and John Hiatt concert t-shirts - lots of dancing, clapping along...

the music is really rich rhythmically, was impossible even for stick in the mud me not to at least bounce around a little.

great band.

have they ever done anything w/The Ex? they should, that would be so awesome, this show kinda reminded me of the The Ex.

This was revealed to Alex In SF and myself by Jem Cohen at a screening of Jem Cohen's film of The Ex.

Yeah, but The Ex's cover (Theme From Konono on the second disc of Turn) is pretty goddamned bland and worthless. It's like, yeah, we like Konono too— let's make 'em sound really white!
