My vote is for Social Distortion.

If you think that Social D is the coolest band ever...
I mean, they're okay. I mean, I know lots of people who would agree with you, but they're all wrong wrong wrong.
If we're gonna go with EVER EVER EVER, then I say:

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, but if you're the coolest band ever, you could also kick the ass of any other band who tried to say they were cooler.

Social D would slaughter Ray and the boys.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe today, but if you put 'em peak vs. peak (in terms of physical toughness, say, Kinks ca. 1964/65 vs. Social D ca. 92), I think it would be a good brawl.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

but the Louvins, y'know, could just invoke the Wrath of God and, like, smite them all.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

True. Mike Ness would probably accidently knife one of his own boys, while Ray and Dave Davies would probably constantly argue who should be beating up who.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band cuz they fight werewolves!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

just cuz I'm dumb, I didn't catch on and for a second I thought BS & SBB had a song about fighting werewolves, and I was about to think about tracking that song down. Cuz that would be cool. Like that Half Japanese song where Jad Fair sings about beating up Dracula.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, but if you're the coolest band ever, you could also kick the ass of any other band who tried to say they were cooler.

The Wesley Willis Fiasco. Period.

MANOWAR KILL!

Dog Latin, Monday, 26 May 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Duran Duran.

Simon LeBon is married to the hottest woman who ever lived. Therefore he is officially cooler than coolness itself.

Kraft F'n Werk

weatheringdaleson (weatheringdaleson), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Ness is a cunt.

The coolest band today is probably Lightning Bolt.

Famous Athlete, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

In their day, Suicide. The guy's didn't give a fuck about anybody, and smashed every place they played with bike chains. That's fuckin' cool.

Bootsy Collin's earned himself a million billion cool points in his day, as well as Johnny Cash.

Today's coolest is without a doubt Buckethead.

David Allen, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan was the coolest person on Earth from 1966 to 1978.

Later....

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Royal Trux is a great band, much better than the fucking WHITEY STRIPES. However, I would not consider them very "cool." They are more dirty. Maybe not as dirty as the Cromags or Corrosion of COnformity but dirty nonetheless.

The coolest man in music history has got to be Bryan Ferry.

The coolest woman in music history is Sting.

jesus whip, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahaha... Sting!!!

...and yeah, good analysis on the Trux... better than the Red Stripes but more dirty than cool.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Massive Attack of course - they were recently named 'Coolest Band on the Planet' in some poll... and it's one poll I actually agree with. Which other 'mainstream' band can still release challenging interesting records that actually SELL? Everything from their artwork to their videos to their collaborations to the clothes they wear - uber cool.
In fact, most of the Bristol bands are coolness personnified.

russ t, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought that the Velvet Underground were undisputably the coolest band ever - at least, that's what everyone keeps telling me, and who am I to insult humanity's intelligence?

guitar wolf:

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Velvet Underground - but nobody ever really bought their records, they're one of those bands you're SUPPOSED to like, yet finding someone under 35 who owns more than 2 albums by them is nigh on impossible.... so maybe they ARE the epitome of coolness, then.... because cool, I suppose, can't be mainstream and popular....

RUSS T, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

russ, i'm under 35 and i own more than two VU records.

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It has to be The Fall, SPK will take second place cuz they used to swing electric chains and blow a flame thrower at the audience.

Jrvision (visionjr), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

it's Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band cuz they fight werewolves!

Motorhead.... can you really be cool with warts and missing teeth?

And Bryan Ferry - he always looks to me like he'd absolutely stink of cigarettes and expensive wine. Pretty cool guy, then.

russ t, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Coolies?

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What is so cool about Sonic friggin' Youth?

Snoop Dogg is cool. Lee Perry is cool. George muthafuckin' Clinton is cool. What the fuck has the Fall ever done?? The Velvet Underground??

Evan (Evan), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee Perry and George Clinton haven't been cool in years.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Maximum effort, cool that became instantly uncool and then became cool again and will soon be uncool but I don't care: Thin Lizzy.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Boredoms. Eye is DA MAN.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, there are elements of coolness in a lot of the above mentioned acts, but Social Distortion is still cooler, because:

A) They blend the right amount of grit and style.
B) They can make a country song sound dangerous.
C) They have old school and new school cred.
D) They'd kick the hell out of any of those bands.
E) They'd steal the other bands women.
F) They haven't sold out.
G) They're still cool to like.

Sonic Youth's only claim to coolness is that they've opened up for Lightning Bolt a couple of times.

Dave Fischer, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I do think the Velvets are hard to beat, especially while Nico was in the band. They had five different kinds of cool going all at once. But two other so-far-unmentioned contenders:

Uh...hello? We're talking about "cool"...has noone heard of a little band called

THE STROKES

Their next album will change the face of music. FOREVER.

Henry, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

err...The Strokes?!?!?!?!?!?!

Rehashed, generic, sad guitar rawk for geeks in unmentionable skinny ties and DREADFUL clothes. I think you've been reading NME a bit too much, Henry.

Change the face of music - my arse. In the words of Morrissey - Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before......

How could no one mention CHRISSIE HYNDE? She's THE f*ckin coooooolest. I realize she's not a "band" and no, I don't think the Pretenders as a band were "the coolest band" but she's so cool, she's frightening.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed, Jeanne.

And Ned - corking post - how true. I firmly believe that people who buy the Strokes records buy them because they think they SHOULD have them rather than honestly, genuinely wanting them. Which is kinda sad, really, I think. Believing the hype and the bullshit (take that away from the Strokes - what's left?).

COULD IT!?!?

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not with the Strokes, Evan, no, it couldn't - you're quite right.

Now stop listening to what the NME says you should be listening to and go and root the bands The Strokes robbed from to make that measly shitty album of theirs - it'll be an education.
