I know we've had the most uncool albums, but what about bands?

Styx, Kiss, and Hootie all spring immediately to mind.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Styx, REO, and Journey are currently together on tour. Is this the uncoolest line up ever?

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nu Shooz

Described rather than directly named. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Kiss?!? Styx?!? Come on people these bands might NOT be cool now, but they were kind of cool at SOME point (especially KISS)! Uncool in my book means no one UNDER the age of twenty might EVEN once have listened to one of your records willingly.

Damnit, we already wasted our invocation of the Louvin' Brothers. It's like we're on a Louvin' quota - I just can't bring them into this.

Sorry Alex in NY. Kiss were never ever cool in any part of the globe that was actually cool. Which might make them cool now, in a weird revisionist/retro way. But I still doubt it. Ugly right wing white men in make-up = Insane Clown Posse, really. Only with lots of middle American fans ;-)

Ucoolest, by far = Pavlov's Dog.

Anyone willing to argue that?

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Only with lots of middle American fans ;-)

Wait, that's stillICP, innit?

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Flying Pickets
Hue and Cry
Dire Straits

but the winner by a long way has to be:

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see a pattern here.. Levellers, barenaked Ladies, Spin Doctors... it's the hideous '93 scruff-rock asault..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Toploader are shockingly naff - but surely Starsailor beat them in the eternally dull and uncool stakes?

No, Starsailor need to get more popular to be considered horribly uncool. Toploader (who did get popular) are horribly uncool NOW.

Can we laugh at Slipknot (Napalm Death at the circus) yet or are they still dangerous?

Johnny Jarvis, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

http://campuscircle.net/interviews/images/deadsy.jpg

Deadsy is hated by everyone who you'd think would like them: fans of new wave and synthy stuff, the nu-metal kids, basically everyone but me.

Don't mock Slipknow fans, they'll kill you and put a Slipknot T-shirt on your dead carcass and a Slipknot sticker on your car and bookmark Slipknot's web site on your computer. They are hardcore!

Fivvy (Fivvy), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the problem with threads like this is that the band immediately becomes so uncool they're cool. I actually respect Huey Lewis more for his brave uncoolery now.

Actually, wait, no, I still want to punch him in the face. He wins.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The frustrating thing about these threads is that there are never any votes on the matter. We should have ilx polls.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

it is a rule that punk bands are uncool.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Alex in NY.

Hey there, Captain Read-the-Fine-Print, don't invoke my name unless I've posted. You were retorting to Alex in San Francisco. I'm Alex in NYC. Kiss exist in a realm of cool all their own, and if you don't get it, then I suppose it's simply your problem...and probably one of many.

Uncoolest band Ever = Marillion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the awful Manowar might be as good a contender as any.

Aw man! That's who I submitted to the "coolest band ever" thread! Don't be a bastard! :-(

it's the hideous '93 scruff-rock asault..
yup. not one cool band made it big in 93. Apart from the Boo Radleys, if Giant Steps counts as making it big.

Here's some:

Skunk Anansie
Dreadzone
The Shamen (post Boss Drum)
Insane Clown Posse

dog latin - you'reeliving on another planet -Skunk Anansie were UBER cool. And just watch how Skin will shortly become this country's biggest selling female singer......

russ t, Thursday, 29 May 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"King Crimson. Even though they're good."

Heh. How about Peter Hammill? Van der Graaf weren't exactly cool either...

With my 1337!57 head on, I've got to say Radiohead... Unquantifiably nauseating uncool-cool, snivelling Middle England bores that they are. And largely because of their popular status, not because of the music itself at the end of the day.

It comes down to the implications of being a Radiohead fan - subculture gone hideously wrong.

Nat, Thursday, 29 May 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned's Atomic Dustbin

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 29 May 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

For a brief, arrow-slit sized window of time, Ned's Atomic Dustbin seemed cool (the key word in this sentence: seemed)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 May 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They are cool forever for having such a good taste in names.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they were cool because they jumped around like idiots without the slightest concern towards hepcat repercussion (their renouncement of conventional concepts of "cool" rendering them veritably uber-cool!) and because of the two bass gimmick (shared by my personal benchmark-of-cool band, Cop Shoot Cop). Then, of course, the Neds' second album came out, and all went pear-shaped.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 May 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

can't believe I'm the first to mention Toto.

And Starland Vocal Band.

daria g, Friday, 30 May 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Rush have not become campy or ironically cool yet. They're
still just as uncool as ever, methinks.
(as have ELP and Yes).

I'd like to submit Glass Tiger to the thread

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Barclay James Harvest is something as rare as a band who might even have been considered uncool from the very start of their existence.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And Saga, obviously.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean, there are hundreds and even thousands of bands that I hate more than Saga or BJH, but we are speaking of some sort of general consensus here....)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Jethro Tull.
Renaissance fair, huzzah!

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Jethro Tull have several entries in the Acclaimed Music list. No "uncool" band would.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a thread about Styx.

Styx.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Moxy Fruvous

All dime-store jam bands to thread (such as Moe.), ones you will never hear anywhere if you don't like and seek shitty music, but for some reason their stickers are on cars everywhere.

sucka (sucka), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Quiet Riot

Their two hits are covers of the same band and the lead singer went bald and got the absolute worse hair extentions ever.

They still tour and play TINY bars in the middle of nowhere and probably their show is a bit less spectacular since the Great White tragedy happened.

earlnash, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Moxy Fruvous is a good call.

Ha, and I just noticed me getting the Alexes mixed up early on this thread. Apologies to both of them. Although Kiss still suck enormously ;-)

And yes, Alex in NYC, I do so have many problems other than my not "getting" Kiss. You're very astute. But, um, what do my problems have to do with the question?

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rapture.

Not joking.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, that's "moe." to you. note the period after the "e," and the "m" is indeed lowercase (not just because of my ILE style).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

OK I'll say it...Genesis, Phish and anything the Moody Blues did after 1971. And just for the hell of it I'll throw in The Association.

But I disagree with Dire Straits being on this thread.

Where does it say that you shouldn't know how to play your guitar?
I'll spend my money on these guys any day of the week.

I know this boils down to personal tastes and all...

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"twisting by the pool" is pretty damn dire, tho'.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it is weak, but overall, they got me.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Dire Straits was mentioned? That's a shame. I still think their first record is CLASSIC. "Water of Love", "Six-Blade Knife", "Down to the Waterline"- some of the coolest tracks ever.

Will(iam) (will), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'll go with the first answer that popped into my head - Oasis.

Glen Frey, Eagles = good.
Don Henley, Eagles = christly awful

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Phish YES. I mean, NOOOOOOOOO!

Funny that my buddy moved out of upstate NY to CA to escape the shitty dime-store cheez-wiz culture- here is where Phish, "moe." and many dime-store jam bands come from- but there is no escape for him, he tells me that strangely, even cars in CA have "moe." stickers. Does this band even have albums? I thought they just drove around noodling. Fuck I just looked on allmusic and they come from fuckin Utica (shithole I lived for 2 years which was also home of Marcy Playground.)

Sengai, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Blyth Power is the shiznit. I'm all about the neo-Luddite folk, so long as it's not the bloody Levellers.

Anything liked by white frat boys trying to be sincere in the early 90's:

Blues Traveler
Counting Crows
Arrested Development
Dave Matthews Band
Soul Asylum

Evanescence.

NOBODY who could EVER be described as 'cool' could POSSIBLY like this crap. The only person I know who likes them wears t-shirts which say things like "heavily medicated for the protection of society" and "don't get me mad, or I'll kill you". She's also read the "Satanic Bible", and comes out with bullshit egoistic philosophical detritus. She also draws little anime cartoons of people with tails. And writes stories about dragon masters. And changed her name to "Silvan".

LEAST COOL PERSON EVER.

LaHost, fucking hell, even more obscure than abel ganz!!

The problem w/neo-prog bands is that in order for them to be uncool, people need to have actually heard of them.

The Levellers, is my choice, though I don't much care for notions of coolness. Or the levellers, for that matter.

NOFX?

NOFX may be hated by some punk purists, but they've always been popular with the kiddies and skate punks. I don't believe they've ever been bashed consistently by the music press, either. Plus, NOFX have always been aware of the fact they suck, that's what makes them entertaining (and funny).

Herb Alpert/Tijuana Brass

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My picks:

4 Non-Blondes
Orgy
Spin Doctors

And the uncoolest, lamest band ever:

Nickleback

daavid, Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I disagree on Huey Lewis and the News. Also on the Pet Shop Boys, how could someone think they're not cool?

daavid, Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Quiet Riot [...] They still tour and play TINY bars in the middle of nowhere and probably their show is a bit less spectacular since the Great White tragedy happened.
I saw Quiet Riot in the bar of a bowling alley in Grand Rapids, Michigan, several years ago and it was one of the best concert experiences I've ever had in my life. Yes, Kevin DuBrow has terrible, fake hair now. And Carlos Cavazo is only three and a half feet tall. But they rocked. And put on a great show. And they graciously signed my Metal Health lp afterwards. Plus, I made out with my first girl to "Cum on Feel the Noize." It was awesome.

Uncoolest: Marillion, for sure. I mean, look at this album cover:

http://www.the-company.com/images/covers/mchildh.300_300.jpg

And the lead singer's last name is Dick, but he goes by Fish. Put it together and his name is Fish Dick. That's funny, but it's not cool.

elvissinatra (elvissinatra), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to nominate supergroups made up of members from the least cool bands of all time - mathematically, this must make them even more uncool.

Arena - people from Marillion and Pendragon
Transatlantic - different Marillion member, plus people from Dream Theater, Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings
Liquid Tension Experiment - more Dream Theater dorks plus Tony Levin (who is almost cool-ish but not quite)

Are there any jam band supergroups?

udu wudu (udu wudu), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Firehouse or Krokus?

Spinktron 2000 (El Spinktor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has now become very subjective. And as such of not much value...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever, Krokus is so very uncool.

Spinktron 2000 (El Spinktor), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Modern Talking owns this thread

Rudolf (Rudolf), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, in a way the Rapture/Williamsburg nominations were kinda on point. Move yr faces, guys!

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, are you a fan of Transatlantic?

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 6 February 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Again Arena (who possibly are the worst band I've ever heard described as "progressive") LTE, Transatlantic et al are too obscure to be "Uncool" surely? Probably the flower kings would be the least cool, if they were more widely known. I bought that first TransAtlantic album on the recommendation of a friend - I supoose it was worth it for the first 6 minutes or so of the long track, said bit being thrilling and audacious, but the rest of the album is pretty boring.

Derek Dick aka "Fish" hasn't sung for Marillion for years now. They have made more albums with their more recent singer, Steve Hogarth. Some of these albums at least are very very good, in a kind of talk talk goes prog way, but I suspect the likelyhood of anyone who doesn't already like them or is interested in them listening is very slim.

In ILM theory Geir should be a fan of Spock's Beard, given their big concentration on saccarine melodicness, but I bet he isn't.

The Wiggles

Stephanie Gunn, Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Not exactly a band but Melissa Etheridge is pretty damn uncool. Her "pouring out of her soul" is nauseating.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite so.

Unless it's the Indigo Girls.

Kenny Loggins is the uncoolest band evah

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Roxette (of course), Ace of Base, Rolling Stones, Manowar, Kiss.

there's a band called Raya from Austin who sucks more than any of those bands.

Justin Leach, Monday, 1 March 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Indigo Girls, the Indians, the October Project, and the Best Kissers in the World all tie.

How can most of the bands on this thread be uncool when nobdy has ever heard of them?

I mean, Runrig? The Wiggles? The October Project?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 4 March 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

hot damn, there are some classics here. but i'll go with:

Big Audio Dynamite
Taxiride
Shihad/Pacifier
Something for Kate
C&C Music Factory
Counting Crows
Seal
Heart
Foreigner
Journey
Vixen
Cinderella
Black Box
M People
Morcheeba
anything on a Cafe Del Mar compilation
anything on a Rebirth of Cool compilation
and of course yer Nickelback/Creed/Evanescence

but whoever nominated Technotronic is on crack. Technotronic kick it, now and for ever.

too much for my mirror (too much for my mirror), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

that other thread reminded me of another - John Mayer. and his compatriots in the land of whiny-designed-for-14-year-old-girls-and-on-hold-music, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Ben Kweller, Ben Lee and Ben Folds. these dudes are not cool.

too much for my mirror (too much for my mirror), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You haven't heard of the Wiggles? They recently sold out 12 shows in a row at Madison Square Garden. That's 12.

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Quiet Riot in the bar of a bowling alley in Grand Rapids, Michigan, several years ago and it was one of the best concert experiences I've ever had in my life.

I can't read this sentence without hearing Carl from Aqua Teen Hungerforce as the voice in which it is spoken.

Also, I can't believe nobody's mentioned Dan Fogelberg. I mean some of the bands mentioned on this thread suck, but at one time some teenagers thought they were cool... Did anybody ever think Fogelberg was cool?

I'll say Hoobastank even though i don't think i've ever heard them. Just for the name i'll say them. Or Something Corporate. I've never heard them either, but they do have the uncoolest name since Hoobastank.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh good good, it's THE NYLONS, people!

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc800/c826/c82620w4v69.jpg

It has to be a band that no one has ever considered cool. Hoobastank, I'm sure, are considered cool by hordes of teenagers out in California. The Nylons, though, have NEVER been cool!
