Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(OK so the Piero Picconi track should be down a few places. Oops.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What year's next?

Paul Cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was so hoping that this would be Geir.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Note lack of Genesis. Although Geir going on an extended respite and discovering Afrobeat would be a hoot.

Next? Shit, I don't know. 1989, maybe, or 1978-9. Or 1966.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking 1979 would be a good choice. Disco was winding down, post-punk was kicking up, and AM radio was a virtual wasteland. Might be tougher than it first appears.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

how does one go about getting ahold of this praiseworthy cdr?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Since the question has now been raised, I wouldn't mind having one too...

Paul Cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be interested in hearing a CD-R of the best songs from an off year, something not quite as iconic as 1979.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

1975, perhaps?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Just because Billy Corgan writes a song called "1979" hardly makes it iconic. ; )

Paul Cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

YES IT DOES

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

1985

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

1990 might be good. Metal sucked. College rock was in a lull. Top 40 radio was dreadful. Wimpy-ass rave techno was just coming into its own.

Good luck with that one.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

1536

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Trades welcome. You know where to reach me.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate this is killer.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

awesome!
1985 seconded (esp. if on a rock tip)

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

do one for 1973 and then every year after up to now! you know you want to!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Rhino to thread

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

holy fuck, Jess, you had to pick the WORST YEAR EVER didn't you?

I got a copy in Mpls and it's grate (though in alphabetical not running order, oh well). I vote 1989.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am a big fan of the jumping-around-the-years aspect of this project; see also Dick's Picks)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow!!!

Now you gotta do 1984.

Patrick, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i have said b4 on these pages that '85 is officially WORST YEAR EVER for popular music. for that reason, p'raps nate SHOULD do that year, as i stand ready to be corrected

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

('72 is one of my favourite years also btw)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, 85 strikes me as something of a musical black hole. Post-rock/new wave had died its overblown pompus death, charts were dominated by Patrick Bateman-stylee melodic soft rock and alt.rock was mostly in limbo.. So what gives?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

1985="THE ROOF THE ROOF THE ROOF IS ON FIRE" (also "Death Valley '69)

I am tempted to go for '79, which IS iconic. Billy Corgan has nothing to do with it, however: I am talking about The Warriors OST.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 12 June 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

how many discs out of my Disco Box do you need for you to give this to me, Nate?

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 12 June 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If I give you the '72 and the '02 it should be an even swap (15 hours of music), right?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 12 June 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, this is pretty much filled with the stuff that would go on my post to the "gaps in your musical knowledge" thread. you think i got anything you want, so i can gets me a copy of this?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow.

The '72 I lived through was all about K-tel on the one hand (radio, older sisters) and glitter on the other (stereo, older brother), and my favourite "jazz" song of '72 was (is) "Saturday in the Park," but a fascinating comp all the same. Now allow me to be annoying here and tell you a few really great ones you missed:

* Baby Blue," Badfinger
* either "Betcha By Golly Wow" or "I'm Stone in Love With You," Stylistics
* either "Coconut" or "Without You," Nilsson
* "Conquistador," Procol Harum (pre-Boney M Euro-beat)
* "Dancing in the Moonlight," King Harvest (pre-something or other)
* "Down by the Lazy River," Osmonds (might not rock quite as hard as "Crazy Horses" but is just a better song)
* "Run to Me," Bee Gees
* "Roundabout," Yes

+ Lots of soft rock, novelties, and great ridiculous shit I either can't think of right now or don't have time to mention.

[cf. The Virgin Suicides: those boys are ME circa '72. (minus five hot blonde sisters living down the street).]

Oh, one major caveat: #121. The song that almost ruins an otherwise perfect record!

scott woods (s woods), Friday, 13 June 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

finally someone else who hates "rock&roll suicide"

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 13 June 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and nate this is amazing

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 13 June 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it really is.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 June 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

good job Patrin!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 13 June 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but how did you use the wrong "Rated X"? Miles, motherfucka!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 13 June 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

1979! 1979! 1979! (year of birth and all that)

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 13 June 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i still insist on 85, precisely because its so goddamn hard. c'mon patrin show us what yr made of.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 13 June 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

'85 is when The Indestructible Beat of Soweto came out, so that's 12 trax right there

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 13 June 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I say do 1971 next. I'm also adding to the "this is amazing" commentary.

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 13 June 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm certain I don't have anything good enough for trade. :( :( :(

Dan I., Friday, 13 June 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

By my calculations, Faust's So Far and Return to Forever's Light as a Feather were also released in 1972.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 13 June 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

natrin i want i want!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 13 June 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Which version of 003? (i.e. Prologue or Epilogue?) (I'm trying to download this stuff one by one.)

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 13 June 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Prologue", i.e. the first track on the album that then segues right into "It's Just Begun".

"Baby Blue" (and Straight Up) is '71, innit?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 13 June 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Baby Blue" might be from a '71 album (I only know their singles), but it was a hit in April '72.

scott woods (s woods), Saturday, 14 June 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh well

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 14 June 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah.

scott woods (s woods), Saturday, 14 June 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, this truly looks amazing.

I think you need to do another and also vote for 1985.

H (Heruy), Saturday, 14 June 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

was thinking aboutthis and I’m not sure why people think that ’85 is such a bad year. Off the top of my head I’ve just thought off Kymaxx’s breakthrough album “Men All Pause”, “Meeting in the Lady’s Room”, MJ Girls “In My House”, Alexander O’Neal “Innocent”, Cameo “She’s Strange” (or was that ’84?), Ready for the World “Oh Sheila”, Sheen Easton “Sugar Walls”

Hmm notice that the Minneapolis sound, (spillover from Purple Rain?) is dominating.

Just googled, http://www.80sxchange.com/80s_charts/1985.htm

This is great!! Tears for Fears, Aretha’s return, “Raspberry Beret”, New Edition “Cool It Now”, “Jungle Love”. Had totally forgotten about DeBarge’s “Who’s Holding Donna Now”. I'd forgotten so many ofthese, and these are just the biggest hits of the year, gotta be more obscurities lurking.

H (Heruy), Saturday, 14 June 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

is this where we nominate songs for Nate's 1985 list or do we let him do that by hisself, considering his 1972 list is so roolish?

I've got some suggestions but I'll hold em like kenny rogers

nate did the perfect 1972 list by the way

Neudonym, Friday, 20 June 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
(oh um duh the Miles "Rated X" was on Get Up with It which is '74 not '72. oops nevermind)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 4 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure any years are particularly iconic except 1967. (I was going to say and 1977, but punk's too messy). I've just realised that the two most important years in my musical evolution were (unquestionably) 1987 and 1997. Roll on 2007!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 4 July 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

there are LOTS of iconic years!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 4 July 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yeah, there are so many that they lose their iconic edge. Wait, maybe that was your point.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 5 July 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

no it wasn't

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 6 July 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

1985= YEAAA, THAT'S RIGHT, BABY...LET IT *FUGGIN'* BE by THE REPLACEMENTS

...and it still didn't sell jack...'tis a hard luck story

*Rockistz forevah*

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 6 July 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not doing 1985. At least not now. I'm doing some weird possibly ill-advised hip-hop thing.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 6 July 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Let It Be is 1984

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 6 July 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

and 1984 is the greatest year for pop music ever

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 July 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd better back that up with some solid evidence there pally (tho Purple Rain is a good start)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You're kidding, right?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

every year is golden

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Purple Rain + "Erotic City", Zen Arcade, Born in the U.S.A., Run-D.M.C., United States Live, Double Nickels on the Dime, Swordfishtrombones, Like A Virgin , Private Dancer, Learning to Crawl, "I Feel For You," Reckoning, Ocean Rain, Meat Puppets II, The Smiths + Hatful of Hollow, Love Wars, 1984, UTFO vs. Roxanne Shante, the Pointer Sisters' "Jump," The Special AKA, Time Zone, Newcleus, Nick Cave, U2, Scott Walker, Frankie Says, not to mention like a gazillion glorious top 40 hits with a tacky veneer, only starting with the Footloose soundtrack...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 6 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure any years are particularly iconic except 1967

66 is the way to go if yur making a tape. it roolz the roost.

scott seward, Sunday, 6 July 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, given Prince + VH + Brooooce, I won't sneer at '84. I'm just not a huge fan of the middle of that particular decade.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I am SO with everyone on 1984 it isn't funny

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 6 July 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Iconic != years with great records

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

no shit, Sherlock

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 6 July 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos: Oh, shush! :P

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 6 July 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos man I was replying to Scott.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it sure didn't read like it--not sure how it relates to his point--but hey.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 6 July 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I hadn't really been following the 1984 debate, sorry.

Let's all love each other.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 July 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

double nickels on the dime is the best thing ever. 1984 hatas can go suck it!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 7 July 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I could fit a double LP in my mouth, Julio

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 7 July 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

suck the edges of the lp then.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
He's doing 1979 next.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

and I am almost finished with 1997. three more songs on their way and it's ready to roll. new thread w/tracklist as soon as it's finished.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

voila!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I'm going to wind up putting like 8 songs from the Twin-Tone Big Hits of Mid-America Vol. 3 on it, so the punkular segment of the CD will sound pretty damned Minnesotan

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's also going to open with another Coppola film score piece -- "Delta", from Apocalypse Now. This will be followed by Led Zeppelin's "In the Evening".

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What years have been claimed? I'd be itchin' to try on a year from 70s on...

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

so far we have 1972 (Nate), 1979 (Nate), 1981 (Andy K), 1989 (me, next, haha), 1996 (Jess), 1997 (me), and 2002 (Nate + anyone else who has)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

When I'm done with this I'm going to do a total gimme year, probably 1977

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

1979 isn't a gimme year?!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually it took me an evening to think up about 70 songs, so it isn't, yeah. It's just not as tiresomely canonized to such an extent. (i.e. OMG S3XXX P!$+0LZ!)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I got dibs on 1974!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You better include something from Taj Mahal's Mo Roots

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha let's start a sub-board called I Love Gigantic MP3 Mix-CDs Based on Specific Years

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll happily do any year from 1978 onwards that hasn't already been taken. Someone just assign me one of those years randomly... RIGHT NOW!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

1978, then. hop to it!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha ha, oh fuck, I just realized Eyes' "TAQN" is '79. This will be THE BEST COLLECTION OF MUSIC EVER

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 18 September 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, I realize I never properly thanked you for the 72 disc. Thanks, man -- it's great.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 September 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And unless ILM's search function ain't working proper, it looks like nobody's done 1971. WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS Y'ALL SUCKAS'LL HAVE HELL TO PAY

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Damn. Scratch that, I guess.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:42 (twenty years ago)

An awesome mix made even awesomer. Seriously, I think the original 1972 is my favorite of the eight CDR700s I have.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:36 (twenty years ago)

That is fucking unstoppable!

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 06:50 (twenty years ago)

haha Pat Satchmo!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 10:58 (twenty years ago)

Haha?

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Aaaaaand "Sweet Hitch-Hiker" turns out to be a 1971 single. I'm going to replace it with "Someday Never Comes", which fortunately fits in pretty neatly in that slot.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:02 (twenty years ago)

sweet! that looks awesome dude

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Also part of '71/'72 confusion: Jorge Ben's "Comanche". The replacement track will be "No, Rod, I Do Not Think You Are Sexy" "Taj Mahal".

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:02 (twenty years ago)

dude! come on! he's a fucking Louis Armstrong imitator who did reggae versions of old Louis songs! it's awesome!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago)

That looks INCREDIBLE, patrin.

Has anyone done '93?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Kenan did.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:05 (twenty years ago)

dude! come on! he's a fucking Louis Armstrong imitator who did reggae versions of old Louis songs! it's awesome!

?!?!

He doesn't sing like Louie on this track, but GOOD LORD THAT IS THE BEST IDEA EVER.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:05 (twenty years ago)

POO: 1993

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:05 (twenty years ago)

1993 is a good example of a year I'd like to see an alternate version of, as much as I like Kenan's mix.

Hmmm.. Wrong year... ...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago)

wrong everything

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Agh. "Respect Yourself" is another 1971 track that doesn't belong on the comp (to be replaced by "I'll Take You There"). Man, I wish there was a more reliable single release date database on the web somewhere.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Saturday, 27 November 2004 05:40 (twenty years ago)

JEEZ. Rufus Thomas' "The Breakdown (Part 2)" is ALSO 1971. This is what happens when you try to do a CDR Go! for an adjacent year almost immediately afterwards.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 03:04 (twenty years ago)

(The replacement: "6-3-8")
