What can you tell me about Colleen? I don't know anything about her besides the fact that she is a) French, b) an English Professor and c) signed to Leaf. Also, if you've heard the album talk about it. Why d'you like it? And you, there, that hates it, why d'you hate it?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I stray between the magnetic poles of finding this album intensely boring and 'boredom is the the only emotion I have left in my loneliness'.

Has anyone heard this?

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 17 July 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

havent seen it yet... i quite liked that turiko nojiko or whoever she is on mego, does that lp stand up to repeated listening?

looks like u are developing an aesthetic coz!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 18 July 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i've liked it every time i've heard it (3 or 4?). can't remember much about it though. glockenspiels. good to do maths to. i'll give it another listen in a minute.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 18 July 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's good for drifting off to sleep to. I'm not sure I could actively listen to it.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 18 July 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's good for waiting to.

it's a beautiful album

she may be touring the US this summer. Maybe with Mum (or so I heard).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i knew this. one step ahead of the martian.

as i said on another thread, i listened to this recently in the bath. it made me think my review was quite wrongheaded but still maybe interesting. fuck you if you don't think so? fuck you if you don't think so. yes, i like this album. do you like this album, prima?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

her live show is so great. theres this shy lass onstage who plays a little lalo shifrin ditty. and then she pushes afew pedals and the dtty starts going backward and forwrad at the same time, revrebing into infinity, building into a huge wal of sound that devuors the audeince. she killed the pa eventualy!

sadly the album doesnt maesure up. i excpet her next one to be the bees nees though.

:|, Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

she should be touring the US this summer (hopefully)!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh - her 'Ritournelle' just came up on ILX last.fm radio. Spookily good.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I like this album quite a bit, though I find that my attention has moved elsewhere by the end. I start out really enjoying it actively, but it fades into the background by the end. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though, because it works pretty well as background music. Even though it's not a very long album, I wonder if I would like it more if I listened to half of it, took a break, and then finished it off later. I probably won't ever successfully complete this experiment, though, because once I take a break, my short attention span will move onto something else and forget about Colleen entirely, for I am a scatterbrain.

Lingbert, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

omfg check out the favuorite music section of her website.

:| (....), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:55 (twenty years ago)

she listed wu-tang forever as one of her favorite albums of the 90s. I'm glad someone else likes it.

Lingbert, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 07:25 (twenty years ago)

she is wonderful, I can't wait for another record.

Ha ha - she's like an ILM boy's wet dream.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 07:28 (twenty years ago)

"Everyone Alive Wants Answers" would be and odd soundtrack to a wet dream.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

What is the next album called? when will it be released? how long did it take to write & record?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

ask her if leaf is going to get her over to the US this year, they were planning to last year but decided to hold back until another record was done. I really want to see her in SF!

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Does she DJ or play her music live? I guess that's more a question for ILX than her.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 13 January 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

Will she score my film in 20 years?

Francisco Monar (fmonar), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

She plays it live, Leeeee, a lot of loop pedal and swapping between cello and recorder-like-thing on the fly. And restarting songs a few times because the dinky little music-box won't play backwards properly.

(it is adorable.)

cis (cis), Thursday, 13 January 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

she plays the music box backward!! why didnt i think of that. i thought she had a magic pedal or something.

ok, i'm listening to a track ('everything lay still') from the new album, and i'm pretty excited about it. has anyone heard the whole ablum? i should listen to 'everyone alive wants answers' again, i guess, i think i prob only heard it 3-4 times max.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Everyone Alive... is great. And Colleen is tres sexy *ducks*.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

i just listened to "everything lay still" too. sounds exactly like most of the first record (which i didn't like much).

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

is the album out? she is sexy because she is a FRENCH SCHOOLTEACHER WHO MAKES MUSIC OMG

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

it's out in june. the album is tremendous.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

you can preview the whole album here:

backwards guitar figures and music boxes, there's something untried by the ambientelectroacoustic set! still, sounds pretty, and i'm willing to forgive colleen a fair bit.

and it turns out her real name is Cécile Schott.

jermaine (jnoble), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

okay, i'm listening properly now, and cynicism aside, this is like... REALLY pretty.

"Les Ondes" is really wonderful stuff, and I'm annoyed that I didn't find out about her until recently when eMusic promoted it. Reminds me a bit of some of Simon Fisher Turner's stuff (e.g. the Nadja soundtrack) without the special effects. She was on Active Suspension at one point, right? Between her and Konki Duet, I'm getting the impression that I need to do some serious research on the French electronic-acoustic scene.

I emailed first about how transcendant one of her shows was to me, and that hopefully she will be able to make it to the US again. Unfortunately, the logistics don't look good.

Leeeyoncé (Leee), Wednesday, 20 March 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

It's a lovely cover indeed. The write-up by Fact makes me highly curious to see what direction she turns next with the new LP. The album this thread is named after has been a steady fave of mine ever since it came out, but I do enjoy how she comes up with something really different every time.

Looking forward to the new stuff!

This is a good read, she comes out and says some things that don't get said often enough imo. Sometimes you are a musician and you really don't feel like making music, or even listening to music, yet you have this role of Musician, and so you feel guilty about something that isn't entirely in your control. Really glad she is feeling the music again!

Short show!

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 03:30 (ten years ago)

Short? She played for over an hour, though it was a good length. Very...satisfied with the show. Didn't blow my mind but pleased me and was a long time coming (to the states).

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 12 June 2015 08:16 (ten years ago)

It didn't feel like an hour! Maybe because I'd already seen her full setlist, anything fewer songs would feel abbreviated.

Were you as hypnotized by the drum circle hypnosis as I hypnotically was?

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 17:25 (ten years ago)

Yeah that was my favorite part. I would watch her do a whole set of dubbed out echo-ey drum things. She has done a couple of dub mixes to promote this album and they are very good!

last night's show was great! a lot of the live tracks were more chaotic/fux0red than the album versions — I loved the rapidfire knob-twiddling at the end of 'I'm Kin' and the chopped-up drum loop in 'This Hammer Breaks' (I was expecting her to use the drum onstage to generate the loop, but she used a prerecorded sample). her version of the Night of the Hunter lullaby (mentioned in the setlist Leee posted) was one of the highlights of the set; she got a cool oscillator effect by bowing her instrument while running her fingering hand rapidly up and down the strings. hopefully she'll release it someday because it seems to be a mainstay in her sets.

stoomcursus rockisme (unregistered), Friday, 26 June 2015 19:28 (ten years ago)

New one is really good. Extension of elements of the last I loved, but something different entirely. This is probably going top 5 of the year for me.

Textures remind me of a semi-broken music box...underwater. In a great way.

Captain of None rules

by groovy i mean songs like this -- the groove is implied, not necessarily heavy drum/bass

^^i found a new copy of that LP in the discount bin of a local record store that i think is mostly staffed by fans of Beatles imports and which has a Beach Boys surfboard on the wall for 100k. Colleen slipped through the cracks there.

captain of none is her best

Haha, weird, I scored Captain of None from a discount bin, too. While wandering through Maine. Great record.

two weeks pass...

The new album is really something else. For optimal results total silence is required (in/around the house and in the mind), boy... It's gorgeous. Like swimming with dolphins. "Summer Night (Bat Song)" is the center piece, the be all and end all, both literally and metaphorically. It's one of the harder Colleen lp's to get drawn into, but once she grabs a hold and pulls you under, there's a world down there you couldn't have dared to dream. So beautiful.

It's quite minimal isn't it, with subtle shifts. I really like it, but *so far* not as much as the gorgeous Captain of None.

giraffe, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 15:04 (seven years ago)

It's very minimal! Echoes of her first couple of albums in that respect, utilising a specific sound and using it very sparsely. Except sound-wise it's totally different from her early days. I'm loving it.

I'm not getting into the new one, or any of her "happy" albums. I preferred her achingly lonely and melancholy stuff more.

'the golden morning breaks' is one of the most heart wrenching records ive ever heard... i want to like the new stuff, but it's too cutesy :/

i love captain of none -- it's so subtly groovy
i guess i am into happy colleen! i followed her on fb and a while ago she was posting all of these cute outfits she had sewn for herself. little matching tops/shorts. i love her!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 4 February 2021 21:59 (four years ago)

Wait which Colleen albums constitute "happy colleen"??

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 4 February 2021 23:19 (four years ago)

I like all her albums but the last three (Weighing of the Heart, Captain of Love, A flame a love a frequency) are all exquisitely classic. Are those the Happy Colleen albums?

New album is brilliant.

^wow, it is. Listened to it while waking up in bed this morning, it's gorgeous and mesmerising. Only faintly familiar with Captain of None, looking forward to catching up with the albums since then.

It's really good, but I went back to some of her older, dubbier records and still prefer those

New one is very minimal, which is the mode of hers I like the most.

These days it seems like I find out about records as often as not by thinking "I wonder if so and so put out an album this year? Oh they did, and I didn't see it anywhere." So I'm looking forward to checking out the new Colleen record today (sorry I missed your thread bump Leee).

New Colleen is good but not my favorite. It’s fully instrumental and gets a little samey as it goes. I miss her flat vocals.

"I wonder if so and so put out an album this year? Oh they did, and I didn't see it anywhere."

Yes, this feels familiar to me!
