The Neptunes - classic or dud?

I've been living with a promo copy of N*E*R*D's "In Search Of..." album for two months now and it's finally coming out next week. If this turns out to be my album of the year, I'm not complaining. The first time I heard a Neptunes production was Noreaga's "SuperThug". Then Ol' Dirty Bastard, Kelis, Mystikal, Jay-Z... Classic! These days the Neptunes are everywhere and you can spot their productions a mile off. Are they getting predictable or is the world becoming a better place for it?

Thought there must be a thread on this. Time to revive. Perhaps post- I'm A Slave 4 U there'll be more responses.

Heard the second Kelis LP yesterday, and immediately bought it and played it through twice in succession at home (v. unusual for me). Kelis herself has more co-writing credits than on 'Kaleidoscope', but the songs themselves barely register. What does register strongly are the arrangements and production. It's a Neptunes showcase, basically: an endless string of quality pop/R&B moments. On the basis of this alone, Classic.

Jeff's comments on Kelis = almost exactly what I thought from what I've heard, and I've heard about half. The songs aren't that strong, but the hooks, the vocals, the production and the, er, 'aura' all work separately to make up for it. In that sense, maybe the new Neptunes + Kelis stuff is closer to the R&B Moroder + Donna Summer equation that people throw at Aaliyah and Timbaland (Aaliyah's songs are generally too fully-formed and involving, methinks) than it actually is to A + T. I can almost imagine Kelis improvising a lot of her stuff on the top of these grooves.

I want to get the album before I pronounce judgement on this stuff - of what I've heard only "Popular Thug" totally arrests me. I still think Kelis is the Neptunes' best vocalist though (maybe tied with Mystikal) - she invests even the weakest stuff with her own personality, and I love the way her vocals work against the groove in the music. The inability to do the latter is why so many other artists' Neptunes productions sound formulaic.

Indeed, Ludacris does work well, but while on something like "Southern hospitality" where he'd be snatching the groove up and launching it towards you, Kelis sort of disappears and becomes an internal mechanism of the groove itself. So on "Young Fresh n New" or "Digital World" (2 of my fav. off Wanderland), the Neptunes and Kelis become a reciprocal collaboration rather than an instance of headstrong artist riding over beat. Rather than spearheading the productions (as a proper songstress may) Kelis embodies them, and when we're talking about the Neptunes, this is most often a very good thing.

"Southern Hospitality" is indeed marvellous, but what else have the Neps and Luda done together? At any rate, Ludacris doesn't need the Neptunes like Kelis and perhaps Mystikal do.

Neptunes are no doubt classic. There is no other producer with as nearly as many hits made as the Neptunes. As far artists go, I'd say Kelis and ODB absolutely need beats to thrive off of in order to make good music, but skilled artists like Jay-Z and Ludacris can make their music move regardless of producer. Regardless, Neptunes are the ilest producers in the hip-hop industry to date.

The Neptunes are the phatest producers in music. Sure, their beats are all similar and predictable, but who cares? You can listen to them over and over again without getting tired of them. It's come to a point that an album becomes twice as good just because of a single Neptunes beat. Neptunes are classics and they are here to stay. Keep it up Pharrell and Chad.

True, theyve done alot of good stuff, but i dont think they did "rump shaker"! I would assume that one was produced by teddy riley since he was in the song, not to mention theyve only been around for about 5 years (thats what their site said). Any ways i heard their preview on the website and thought it was pretty dope, but wondered if anyone knew where i could download the album? i know there are two different versions, the original and then they re-did it with live instruments, and i wouldnt mind hearing both. Teddy Riley produced "Rump Shaker", but one of the 'Tunes wrote one of the raps. They might've had a hand in producing it as well, as they were proteges of his, but it was billed as Teddy Riley.

ok, the new version of In Search Of is finally about to come out, and i've read a few reviews, but i don't think i've yet heard anything from anyone who's heard both versions and has given a fair comparison of whether it's an improvement, travesty, minor adjustment, or what? anyone? i'm a little psyched to be able to finally buy it, but a little daunted by the prospect of hearing their tracks sans that lovely Casio guitar sound.

No samples from original artists ! Now thats worth listening to. Being a Dj for 14 years I think ive heard it all ! Artists or Producers sampling everything from M.O.P. sampling Foreigner's Cold As Ice, to Mary J. Blige sampling Elton Johns & Billy Joel's Benny & the Jets. The new album is well worth the time. I believe the trax are identical in order. Nothing new, but since the instruments are in there, the songs get a new richness that you can't really imagine without hearing it first hand. At first spin, Lapdance seems to be identical, but the more you get into it, it feels like you're in the studio with them... tight.

There's a part in N'Sync's "Girlfriend" that sounds almost directly lifted from NERD's own "Stay Together". Nonetheless, the song's quite appealing, if a glaring example (along with what I've heard of "Wanderland") that it couldn't hurt if the Neps started coming up with a few new tricks. Like this real instrument stuff, perhaps.

I've given the new version a cursory audition, but the songs are virtually identical so despite the live instrumentation ya really have to listen to hear anything different if you see what I mean. It's a total joke they had to remake it in the first place but i was hoping that they might take the opportunity to really do something crazy on other ppl's turf so to speak and silence the "only one sound" naysayers, however wrong they might be. Alas, on first impressions no, same songs.

For me the appeal of the neptunes isn't so much a Timba style futureshock but that awkwardness and lack of polish... i guess it's their NERDiness: like Roots Manuva, tiptoeing the fine line of being afraid and being happy to be a dork. Repeating that sound is all a part of that, never feeling the need to be the best. But live instruments just gave them a soul draining MOR professional everydayness, and worse the pretension of SOUL...* The songs are still i dunno, catchy, but they've lost all in them that charmed me.

I read somewhere they said "neptunes is what we do, NERD is who we are". so far the NERD remake is neither, just some exec's idea of a "black rock" fad. Does it have to sound like rock to be rock? or for that matter hiphop? Look at Can Ox...

I disagree completely. I found the new version to be different in as much as it gives a live feel to all the songs, and plays up the rock side a lot more. Sure the tunes are all the same, and for the most part so are the arrangements (though there are some nice new instrumental touches to be found), but its a different vibe altogether. If anything, a more raw one. Some of the songs sound better on the new version (generally the more mellow ones), some of them don't. Now I want a mastermix containing the best of both worlds heh heh

Also, they were excellent on Letterman the other night, completely kicked ass. Classic all the way baby.

Well I think that the neptunes are one of the greatest producers today. Their unique style of beats are very rare in the hip hop industry. I listen to them everyday and can´t wait to get a new song that is produced by them. It´s cool how they combine hip hop and rock, but it does not sound like the main crossover thing. Basically, Neptunes produced tunes strike the same chord in folks that Teddy Riley, Marcus Miller and George Duke do! All of these people have a healthy dose of "the blues" coursing through their veins, which they use to re-invigorate the ailing music industry ;-)

If you made a CD with tunes like "No-diggity" (which is really just a modern "down south, front-porch hoedown", sans the washboard, of course), "U Don't Have To Call", "I Gotcha Money", etc., you'd see that they all have very sparse instrumentation, but you can "feel" them immediately, if you know what I mean. Kind of like the same way you can "feel" a gospel chorus :-) But if you want to "feel" the "In Search Of.." joint, you're going to have to dig out your (or your parent's) old Grand Funk Railroad albums and listen to "Funk 49", or Todd Rundgren's "Time Heals the Wounds" on the Healer album, or even Steely Dan's Aja. Why? Because, as musicians (as opposed to producers) this is what inspired (or inspires) these guys. If "In Search Of .." ends up being a commercial and critical flop, it's because people cannot fathom how someone that wrote the groove for "Shake 'Yo Ass" could possibly be inspired by a tune like "Babylon Sista" (by Steely Dan)!

However, I do agree that it is time to "retire the jersey" for the "trademark" kick drum pattern ;-)

The Neptunes also first caught my ear with SuperThug too (check my Noreaga review on the411online.com). However, now that I look back, they've been involved in tons of other projects. It's scary to think they've been around since Rumpshaker (all i wanna do is zoom-a-zoom- zoom-zoom in a boom-boom). I've been listening to the NERD cd for about 2 months now, and its the best thing I've heard in 2002. I had heard from many heads that it wasn't very good, and I scooped it at Virgin Records for only $7.99, which is half of what we normally pay for a cd in the States. Musically, the cd is like nothing I've ever heard. You can tell there are a ton of influences on the disc, most of them good. What the Neptunes lack in lyrics and vocals, they more than make up for in hooks, beats and production in general. The two were on WGCI radio here in Chicago tonight and they were saying that the album is more like a sound track for life than a typical hip-hop album. I actually even called in and asked them a few questions about the album. I asked them if that drum beat on "Tape You" was lifted from the "Miami Vice" theme song by Jan Hammer. They said that it was inspired by some Phil Collins stuff, and that its one of those beats that makes you want to air drum. I just laughed because thats exactly what I do when I hear that fast drum break.

This is less of an answer and more of a response/comment to that written by wooten_michael@hotmail.com. I couldn't agree with you more when talking about NERD's obvious influences, however I feel that you missed mentioning Earth Wind & Fire, the band that I feel that NERD's sound greatly resembles, obviously with the exceptions of there more Neptunes sounding song like lapdance, rockstar & truth or Dare. Adressing the original question, wether neptunes are classic or dull, who cares, they produce beats that people can dance to when it comes to the neptunes they are not out to be groundbreaking, they are out to make fun beats that people can enjoy. In My opinion they should keep doing what they are doing, any one who can get me to ignore ms. Spears annoying voice and mindless lyrics, and get me to dance and to one of her songs is ok by me.

Neptunes are HOT! Whoever had something negative to say is just upset because they can't dance to the beats or they were nerds in school and have not did a 360 like Pharell and Lee Harvey. If the Neptunes weren't producing for 1/2 of the music industry what would we be listening and dancing too? They have been around a long time and deserve all good things that come there way! I only know four of that ten (2, 3, 4, and 8), but they are such blinders and The Neptunes such genius that I might have to investigate the rest. There's a good article about them in this week's Independent On Sunday, touching on the two versions of the N*E*R*D album - apparently those of us with the first non-rockin' version have "something personal, a rarity". I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I'm stupid enough to have both, but you should really get Kelis' debut "Kaleidoscope" first, everything they've done since is spread like Marmite on this album.

Yeah, it's actually quite surprising how their sonic borders have actually shrunk post-'Kaleidoscope' to a much more basic blueprint. In some ways that's been very fruitful - they've really honed their funk influences, for one - but it's odd that they've avoided doing tracks with the sensitivity and melodrama of "Get Along With You" or the eerie disquiet of "Mafia". Would that be too pop for them now? Too anonymous?

three months pass...
I'm v. late on this, but I just got the NERD album used a couple of weeks ago. I'm guessing I have the American release of it -- it's a promo w/ a 2001 copyright, but it sounds like it has to be the "rock" version. How can I tell for sure?

Anyway, after all the ink spilled, I have to say I was very surprised how boring this record is. It sounds VERY Grand Royal to me, all lazy '70s funk references and half-formed songs. Isn't "Rockstar" totally "So Whatcha Want"? Weird to say, but it reminds me most of Russell Simims' solo album, only not quite as good. It also has the GR thing where it seems like the primary theme of the record is "let's talk about how cool we are", with almost no substance otherwise. Love "Lapdance," "Rockstar" is fair, but beyond that, dullsville. Is this really going to turn up on some Best of lists?

Just simple stuff like that. It's not fancy but it's perfect. 'Provider,' 'Bobby James,' 'Baby Doll,' the rest! Everything other than the rapping bits from the Shay guy are great. It's perfect. I mean, what kind of lyrics do you want!

It's a classic album. Straight up and down. You can't defeat it this year. You really can't. That's just how it is. Pharrell will murder you in your sleep. He will cut your throat It's an undeniable classic. It cannot be denied.

How exactly do the Neps produce so many tracks? I mean, over the last, say 4 years, how many have they done? They must have some kind of template they work to, maybe diverting for some of the more out-there productions like "Grindin'", but even so, they're phenominally prolific considering the quality of what they produce. They just seemed to have discovered the recipe for pure booty-shakin'.

i think they spent a lot of time stockpiling beats, loops and hooks prior to the release of the Noreaga and Mystikal stuff a few years back which i think really blew them up. in addition to that, their stuff is so minimal and simple most of the time that its similar to the old SAW production line setup - they're able to churn so much stuff out because so much of it is reliant on the same basic templates

That's what I thought Stevem, there are obvious definite ways of making a Neps track, but it just struck me looking at the listings above that the sheer volume of tracks they make is astounding and only seems to have increased in the last 18 months or so. Incidentally, this period has coincided with Pharrell's rise to stardom, which makes you think about how the work is distrubuted between him and Chad.

Even if some of them have the same foundation they still flip that bitch every time out. Like that song from common vs. the ll cool J song. Then compare that to Mystikal's "shake ya ass" vs. busta's "what it is right now." There is no doubt when their song comes in the club the dance floor get's crowded and when it comes on in your car- now matter how many time the played it you listen anyway. I counted yesterday and the WIZ FM here in Cincinnati played 6 Neptune produced songs in the hour between 2-3pm on a saturday no less. That's primetime baby.

I was listening to "She Likes To Move" the other day thanks to The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift and I think that song encapsulates pretty much everything I love about the NERD aesthetic, almost to the point where I don't think I ever need to hear another NERD track.
