Heard the second Kelis LP yesterday, and immediately bought it and played it through twice in succession at home (v. unusual for me). Kelis herself has more co-writing credits than on 'Kaleidoscope', but the songs themselves barely register. What does register strongly are the arrangements and production. It's a Neptunes showcase, basically: an endless string of quality pop/R&B moments. On the basis of this alone, Classic.

I want to get the album before I pronounce judgement on this stuff - of what I've heard only "Popular Thug" totally arrests me. I still think Kelis is the Neptunes' best vocalist though (maybe tied with Mystikal) - she invests even the weakest stuff with her own personality, and I love the way her vocals work against the groove in the music. The inability to do the latter is why so many other artists' Neptunes productions sound formulaic.

For me the appeal of the neptunes isn't so much a Timba style futureshock but that awkwardness and lack of polish... i guess it's their NERDiness: like Roots Manuva, tiptoeing the fine line of being afraid and being happy to be a dork. Repeating that sound is all a part of that, never feeling the need to be the best. But live instruments just gave them a soul draining MOR professional everydayness, and worse the pretension of SOUL...* The songs are still i dunno, catchy, but they've lost all in them that charmed me.
I read somewhere they said "neptunes is what we do, NERD is who we are". so far the NERD remake is neither, just some exec's idea of a "black rock" fad. Does it have to sound like rock to be rock? or for that matter hiphop? Look at Can Ox...

If you made a CD with tunes like "No-diggity" (which is really just a modern "down south, front-porch hoedown", sans the washboard, of course), "U Don't Have To Call", "I Gotcha Money", etc., you'd see that they all have very sparse instrumentation, but you can "feel" them immediately, if you know what I mean. Kind of like the same way you can "feel" a gospel chorus :-) But if you want to "feel" the "In Search Of.." joint, you're going to have to dig out your (or your parent's) old Grand Funk Railroad albums and listen to "Funk 49", or Todd Rundgren's "Time Heals the Wounds" on the Healer album, or even Steely Dan's Aja. Why? Because, as musicians (as opposed to producers) this is what inspired (or inspires) these guys. If "In Search Of .." ends up being a commercial and critical flop, it's because people cannot fathom how someone that wrote the groove for "Shake 'Yo Ass" could possibly be inspired by a tune like "Babylon Sista" (by Steely Dan)!
However, I do agree that it is time to "retire the jersey" for the "trademark" kick drum pattern ;-)

"Yo it's me ORCHIDX i am searching for the neptunes to help me do the damn thang.Read my story and check out my site and be sure to place something in my guestbook.
The Legend behind ORCHID'X: 25,000,000 century's ago there lived a race of talented species who lived in the valleys of the desert winds of Jupiter. This race was called ORCHID'S, the name was created for one specific purpose this purpose was to highlight the life and the talents of everyone of the clan members. It's believed that when an ORCHID/PERSON dies there body will explode with atoms and micro bites overflowing like a tipped over pitch of water and flow to the sky's of the moon and the stars and recuperates. One atom was missing from one body and now it's formed a powerful atom cell of light and energy. This rare atom has been exposed to darkness feelings and the worse ever music. This rare atom or enhanced ORCHID is unknown so there's an X that follows ORCHID. This means that until ORCHIDX finds his destiny he will regain his real name and meaning. ORCHIDX was corrupted a while ago but now he's ok he's getting over his past by expressing himself through music and lyrics. Until then he's ORCHIDX who was once and angel of deception but now he's an angel from the heavens.
The Reality of ORCHID'X: He's a new R&B solo artist, he's like the Romeo of 2002 he's more revolved compared to usher, Ginuwine, B2K, Imx, and Lil Bow wow. This young-cat has been through more chaos that he could ever image In his lifetime. His voice floats in uproar of warm light and a lower roar of blue mist water. ORCHIDX is so refreshing just hearing his Pop, R&B, Gregorian roar like a tiger, His chanting vocal mix, and a sequence of the style of country vocals is so awesome. He's the ocean and the sea he's the light beneath the burned candles of a black gloomy night. He's the air that you struggle to breath he's the pavement that you drag your feet he's the fire that burns in your heart he's seductive he's a creature created one of a kind. >< You guys know who I am ORCHID.X representing LA.*TX Thank Yall... «'Q'» "ORCHID.X" © 2001 ORCHID.X Music E-mail: Webmaster@powerful.zzn.com Contact: 323 281 0381 Web-site: Http://www.communigate.co.uk/london/orbit/ Http://orchidx1.tripod.com/ «He's the 'Crow' of our concealed essences »….Q― ORCHIDX A new solo artist, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, after all the ink spilled, I have to say I was very surprised how boring this record is. It sounds VERY Grand Royal to me, all lazy '70s funk references and half-formed songs. Isn't "Rockstar" totally "So Whatcha Want"? Weird to say, but it reminds me most of Russell Simims' solo album, only not quite as good. It also has the GR thing where it seems like the primary theme of the record is "let's talk about how cool we are", with almost no substance otherwise. Love "Lapdance," "Rockstar" is fair, but beyond that, dullsville. Is this really going to turn up on some Best of lists?

On the one hand, I love to listen to it, and it sounds really great.
On the other hand, the lyrics really annoy the fuck out of me, if I actually pay attention to them. Total garbage.
Of course, like I said, I really like the album. Totally conflicted.

Relax, girl Sip some of my Slurpee You don't have to lie to me It's fly to me
Just simple stuff like that. It's not fancy but it's perfect. 'Provider,' 'Bobby James,' 'Baby Doll,' the rest! Everything other than the rapping bits from the Shay guy are great. It's perfect. I mean, what kind of lyrics do you want!
It's a classic album. Straight up and down. You can't defeat it this year. You really can't. That's just how it is. Pharrell will murder you in your sleep. He will cut your throat It's an undeniable classic. It cannot be denied.

LSD- Not to change the subject entirely, but can you explain “Light a candle, run laps around the English Channel, Neptunes’ got a cocker spaniel”? N- Well, when you light a candle, that’s saluting your dead peoples. Light a Candle. And then, what’s the English Channel? It’s a big pool of water and it’s overseas. So I’m trying to say that when I light a candle I’m that strong that I can run laps around the English Channel. And Neptunes have a cocker spaniel. ‘Cause they homo. LSD- Oh. All right. N- Neptunes is homo. You won’t hear another Neptunes track again on Noreaga again in your life. I didn’t know that they hand was broken. [makes limp-wristed gesture] LSD- Is this a recent discovery? N- It’s a recent discovery after the “Oh No” video. After money had the tight choker on in that video. And we started asking questions, and people from Virginia started telling us that he’s a straight Flagrino. And he takes it up the ass. I cut him off. LSD- Even though the beats– N- Fuck the beats! I can’t fuck with nobody that Mohammed used to throw off the hill. You know, Mohammed used to take all the homo niggas in the village, and he’d take ‘em to the top of the hill and he tricked them. He’d tell ‘em ‘Yo, jump down there’, and when they’d jump down there, they killed they self. We don’t fuck with homo. I like lesbians, though. I’ma stand up–I like lesbians and dykes. If you’re lesbian and dyke you’re okay to me, but if you’re a homo, I don’t even like you.

i liked the neps when they stay away from the live instruments and stick with the synths and drum machines, that second edition of "in search of" with the band playing on it was awful..

― s1ocki, Thursday, 27 December 2007 07:39 (eighteen years ago)
the beat for the new common song is great. the chorus from pharrell is shit though.
― mr x, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)
i don't like it, drums sound cheap.
neptunes' music hasn't really aged well at all. I think they're kind of dud for the most part.
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)
or maybe i just need to do some revisiting of the good neptunes tracks, because everything they've done for the last 2 years or so has lowered my opinion of them (Solange's "I Decidied" is pretty hot tho)
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)
classic when they stick to their "cheap", ice-cold, synthy, programmed bangers. (superthug, drop it like it's hot, milkshake, etc...)
dud when they get the live band on the go and try and fuck around with rock music. that recording of "in search of..." with the live instruments was awful.
― jeremy waters, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)
*re-recording of?
well yeah, most neptunes drums sound 'cheap', that's kind of their trademark - rinky dink drums and las vegas synths - but this common song's drums don't knock at all
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)
nd yeah I would agee with you about them doing the whole live band thing
the live instruments worked on the first timberlake record.
― Jordan, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)
true
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)
"drums sound cheap."
LOL
their drums USED to sound cheap. not anymore. i prefer stuff like trill, this common song and drop it like its hot where they sound a bit plusher. their live stuff is great, just not when its rock.
― mr x, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)
i'm excited for N.E.R.D. record even tho "everybody nose" is fucking awful
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
beat on new com song is good tho
-- Jordan, Thursday, May 29, 2008 9:53 PM
yeah, that's probably the exception. what i'm on about is when they rock out and sound all nu-metal.
― jeremy waters, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
i don't know, i think they went through that corny-sounds phase later...neptunes stuff from a few years ago like "allure" sounds way cheaper than "shake ya ass" or "i just wanna love u".
― Jordan, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)
in search of is great, and a couple of the songs sounded way better w/ live instruments (except maybe 'run to the sun')
― deej, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)
what i'm on about is when they rock out and sound all nu-metal.
yeah, that's pretty lame, but it was kind of a one-off, right?
― Jordan, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)
"touch" by omarion is their ultimate moment of cheap sounding-ness
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)
the song in the new zune commercial is a new one from the record and it kinda sounds like ass
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)
their 'classic' phase is their cheap period.
then again i think they just like that cheapo sound. the saxes on everybody nose sound really cheap and plastic.
― mr x, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)
"Spaz"? The beat is kind of weird
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

and the D&B thing is fucking played.
― mr x, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)
it's just two notes?
but yeah, everybody nose is annoying and i had totally forgotten about it, except i like the chopped-up acoustic bass.
― Jordan, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)
They've sounded cheap at most points in their career, the only difference being that they used to sound cheap and inspired and now they, for the most part, sound cheap and tired. Not all their new stuff is bad, though. I love "Til the Morning" from the new MJB album.
― rev, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)
"Spazz" is pretty dope. people were feeling the new NERD stuff at the Glow In The Dark and Pharrell had the whole place chanting ALL THE GIRLS etc which was funny

― baaderonixx, Friday, 30 May 2008 10:18 (seventeen years ago)
here i was thinkin these guys have fallen off but then i realized, nah, me and the whole club were singin along with "all the girls standing in the line for the bathroom" just last week. and even if they don't have like 10 songs in the top 40 at the same time any more, well, they've been around for a decade already. it's ok for them to be not AS popular as they used to be, hell even just having one good bangin club track out after so long is respectable.
i mention this cause i'm listening to that new twista w/pharrell song (give it up) right now, which is dope even if it sounds very very neptunes... i think i kinda like the direction they seem to have taken in their careers lately - they don't really realease loads of songs any more, and what they do release seems to always be pretty edgy and cool. and yes they stick with their formula, but it's such GOOD formula
― messiahwannabe, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)
also, "I decided" is a gorgeous song !
― AleXTC, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)
i've been shouting that they fell off i guess since Blueprint 2? but nah really over the years i've gotten to the point where even if their hit/miss ratio is really bad, they still do occasionally make a track I really dig. here's a vague list of my favorites from 2004 to present:
Cee-Lo - "The Art of Noise"NERD - "Maybe"Jay-Z - "Allure"Talib Kweli - "Broken Glass"Snoop Dogg f/ Justin Timberlake and Charlie Wilson - "Signs"The Clipse f/ Pharrell - "Stuntin' Y'all"Twista f/ Pharrell - "Lavish"Omarion - "Touch"T.I. f/ Pharrell and Common - "Goodlife"John Legend f/ Kanye West - "It's Over"NERD - "You Know What"Common - "Announcement"Jadakiss - "Stress Ya"

I was listening to "She Likes To Move" the other day thanks to The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift and I think that song encapsulates pretty much everything I love about the NERD aesthetic, almost to the point where I don't think I ever need to hear another NERD track.

yeah, "announcement" is great. I also really like "wamp wamp" with clipse.
― AleXTC, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)
give it up was 2 years ago? huh, and i just realized they didn't produce all those cool tracks on "we got it for cheap vol 2" either (though half of them sound like they did). maybe they *are* falling off! they do anything worth noting in the last year besides the nerd album?
n.e.r.d. recently scheduled then cancelled a show in jakarta too, which kinda pisses me off.
― messiahwannabe, Thursday, 28 May 2009 02:45 (sixteen years ago)
stuff they did last year besides NERD: the whole Common album, half the Madonna album, half the Ashlee Simpson album, songs by Solange, John Legend, Snoop.

that isn't nearly softbatch enough
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:12 (fourteen years ago)
you're missing
luv u bettergirls dem sugar <-- essential frontinsigns
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:13 (fourteen years ago)
^those j0rd songs are all R&B-tinged, and while all great songs, I wouldn't classify any of them as "bangers" in the context of this rap-heavy mix
"Grindin'" and "Got Your Money" are dope imo, but I don't like em as much as these other 19...
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:17 (fourteen years ago)
Plus "When The Last Time" > "Grindin'" any day
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:18 (fourteen years ago)
"Tit 4 Tat" and "Lookin' At Me" are the weakest songs on this list imo. Should prolly replace one with "Grindin'," but they're both pet faves o mine
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)
"cross the border".
― Tim F, Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:24 (fourteen years ago)
I'm very partial to "pass the courvoisier part 2" but that'd be too much busta.
― Tim F, Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:26 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, me too!
That one just missed the cut alongside Fam-Lay's "Rock & Roll"
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:28 (fourteen years ago)
also, the "cross the border" chorus is so bad
no way cross the border is awesome
― Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:29 (fourteen years ago)
i think when girls call dudes papa its weird as fuck tbh
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:30 (fourteen years ago)
"popular thug" is enough of a banger to be on here and also is lifechanging.
― Tim F, Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:31 (fourteen years ago)
i feel you, i still think they're some of his best songs tho
also i'll throw in a vote for "i'm serious" as an underrated neptunes banger
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:34 (fourteen years ago)
i swear i feel like this is missing something (even within the context of "bangers instead of r&b") but i can't for the life of me remember what it is.
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:35 (fourteen years ago)
i've also been partial to "diddy" & "danger" over "shake ya ass"
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:37 (fourteen years ago)
"i'm serious" just missed the cut too! Definitely room for a Volume 2!
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:39 (fourteen years ago)
I think what pains me the most is to leave off my beloved "Lapdance" since it doesn't really flow with the vibe of the others

"like a boss"
also you already have a lot of busta but "what it is" is my favorite besides "light your ass on fire"
― my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:43 (fourteen years ago)
also "flap ya wings" by nelly is one of their dopest beats imo
this is a hella obscure one but i always lovedhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhhNBKXChVM
― Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:44 (fourteen years ago)
"Like A Boss" was 2005 and I think "Drop It's Like It's Hot" is universally known as the end of the Neptunes era. Had I extended it, there would have been room for "Like A Boss" and "Mr. Me Too" I guess?
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:45 (fourteen years ago)
I think "Drop It's Like It's Hot" is universally known as the end of the Neptunes era
i want to argue this but i also think maybe i just don't want seven years to have passed
― king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)
drop it like its hot seemed like new era neps to me & i dont really associate it w/ the early run
― Gatsby was a success, in the end, wasn't he? (D-40), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)
the approach was more delicate at that pt
challops but this beat is better than "drop it like it's hot" imo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8uxIHQhVqQ
... okay maybe not better, but it's very dope
― my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:48 (fourteen years ago)
fuck i should really include "Flap Your Wings"
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:48 (fourteen years ago)
i agree p much w/ deej
i would take drop it like it's hot out
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:48 (fourteen years ago)
also the "drop it like it's hot remix" >>>>> o.g.
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:49 (fourteen years ago)
the hissing drone in "Drop It Like It's Hot" is v much in tune with the whine aesthetic
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:51 (fourteen years ago)
and "like a boss" was released in '04 according to google:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31AV58aFs4L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
album was '05
― my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:52 (fourteen years ago)
i think these problems can only be solved with a Vol. 2. Thanks for ruining my weekend, y'all...
― Lil Boosie's on the Up (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:53 (fourteen years ago)
I think a 05-present Neps comp would be a lot more interesting... obviously their output is a lot spottier, but I think the high points might actually be better than their peak era.
― my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 21 August 2011 05:55 (fourteen years ago)
it would be like Mr. Me Too and that Teriyaki Boys song and then me groaning in agony for 62 minutes

girls dem sugar is totes essential
shake ya ass is vol 2 or 3, fourth quarter material
― Circlesquare du Soleil (sic), Sunday, 21 August 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)
Equally essential imo... These are both in their top 10 .. along with La-La-La
― billstevejim, Sunday, 21 August 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)
also wtf smh at the 2 mentions of "Flap Your Wings" .. the thread I started on that song when it was new is pretty much all people saying how boring it is
