If you could kill the uber indie Oberst, how would you do it? Creativity encouraged.

Not the colourful obituary one expected. Care to use an imperative where only desire drives you, Fecal?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont think people give enough shit about that whiny bitch to turn this into a DMB thread. and i doubt that Mdm. Allison could muster nearly as good a defense of Oberst as she did for DMB, even if she liked him as much.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

personally, i'd hope he lives a healthy happy life, but if i were to be in the room for his demise, i'd hope it was quick, for humane reasons and the fact that i wouldnt want to hear him wail in pain. at least not with that voice.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he finally tries some of the drinking and drugs he cries about doing too much of in his songs and immediately overdoses?

Or, he commits suicide after hearing a Leonard Cohen album all the way through, because he realizes there's nothing he can say that hasn't been said before by better writers? But,I guess, that would require a realization that he lacks the scope to find.

(I do have to admit that for a little while I thought maybe he had the ability to create something original and interesting, but it seems his fans and possibly his ego have kept and will keep him from ever accomplishing anything like that. Too bad, really.)

Moss Feaster, Friday, 15 August 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

all that being said, i've got a soft spot for that "lover i don't have to love" song, despite its horrendousness(that's a word, right?).

scott m (mcd), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I very much doubt anyone here is less of a whiny bitch than Conor Oberst. They just haven't found a way to make people like their whiny bitching yet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha

scott m (mcd), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

though i might bitch a lot on this board, i am in no way a whiny bitch to the extent that i'd let it affect my music, much less the subject matter of my songs.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 15 August 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Life must be real tough for poor Conor. It must take hours to make your hair look like crap, and multiple trips to the thrift store to find the perfect ill fitting sweaters. I just think he tries to hard to be profound. Cant seem to be able to settle with lyrical mediocrity.

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Friday, 15 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The whiny thing has never really bothered me; there are plenty of truly great admirable whiners out there. I just find his lyrics and singing fraudulent. I never believe him, you know? He often makes great word choices, but I doubt his sincerity. I doubt his depresssion. I doubt his drug and alcohol abusing narrators.

Moss Feaster, Saturday, 16 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Severe dehydration due to fluid loss, or drowning in own saliva. The kid spits more than anyone I've ever seen. He was like a walking, alcoholic lawn sprinkler. It was pretty awe-inspiring, and disgusting. The moony front-row fangirls must have gotten a refreshing shower.

now now, im no conor oberst fan, ive only heard a few bright eyes songs, and neither of them did much for me, but why do we want to kill him? i mean there are lots of other artists i dont listen to, but i dont want them dead. i know conor gets a fair bit of attention these days, but im sure a lot of people do genuinely like him, and its ok cos its not like the music is being forced on me. however i do live in england, so maybe hes more hyped stateside and i guess that could be annoying. but still, killing maybe a little harsh? do any ilx0rs like his stuff? i dont really know much about him, but im curious now.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Saturday, 16 August 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

As a Fevers & Miorrors fan who was grossly disappointed to learn Bright Eyes would only play songs off their new album on their recent tour, I second 'Conor drowning in his own tears'! Inspired.

Alexis (Alexis), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Silly shoes, silly clothes, silly hair...and he always has a dumb look on his face. Like he just saw his mother take a skinny dump on his cat. Kind of a confused and scared look. Look into him, please...and see yet another example of an indie stereotype.

Fecal Jesus (mawill), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ive never said theres anything wrong with liking him, lots of people do, ive only heard a few songs and it didnt really do much for me, but it obviously does a lot for some people. i still don't get the hate bright eyes seems to generate in these parts, its not like his music is being thrust into people's faces.

Conor-hating is so five months ago. ILM, please keep up!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe, from pitchforknews about his performance on the shortlist tour - - i can't help wondering if the shoe spitting guy is an ilm poster:

Oberst is a smart guy, if a little young and misguided, so he used his between-songs banter at the October 5th awards program to rail against Clear Channel Entertainment, the massive evil-monopoly media company who exclusively books the Wiltern Theater, where the event was held, and who happened to be a co-sponsor of this year's Shortlist awards. "If there's anyone who cares about music as an art form, now's the time to make a change," Oberst pleaded as though trying out for a Tom Hanks film. "There will be no more real music anymore if we keep letting people shove it down our fucking throats."

His words were met by enthusiastic applause from the audience, and indeed, one zealous disciple ended up at Oberst's feet during Bright Eyes' final song, bowing to him in time-honored Garth-from-Wayne's World adulation. Then, bizarrely, another young man found his way on stage and in what seemed like rage or revenge or mere insanity, stared down Oberst before spitting dramatically on the singer's shoes-- a bold move, considering the troubled vocalist had a twelve piece orchestra at his disposal to kick his attacker's ass! But the cello-wielding heavies weren't needed, and security stepped in to remove the attacker. Who was this young man anyhow, Oberst's rejected Nebraskan cousin? The sole heir to the Clear Channel fortune? Or just some metrosexual fan with rabies? Who knows?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Curt1s OTM. And I'm sorry to say so, but I attended one of his shows last year and it was brilliant. And I am not even especially into his work, let alone one of his indie asshat fans.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

conor is just a "whoa" artist, if you guys cant apriciate his music or what hes trying to say, to bad for you guys...i mean you guys try doing what hes doing and saying what hes saying...you people wouldnt be able to...so leave him alone...havent u all herd "if u dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all"

hes not asking anything from you guys...he dont need you guys he has enough fans out there....so stop with the hate...geez

conor is awesome and you are not

kelly, Friday, 24 October 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelly, if everyone loved Conor as much as you, the entire universe would swerve off balance, jeopardizing the existence of every living thing. By hating on him, we're saving your life.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Friday, 24 October 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm fascinated by the profound similarity to these "wounded fan" responses, the psychology is remarkably consistent. Defense of the band in question always proceeds through the same steps - accusing the critic of "not getting it", not being able to do what the performer does, being too petty and/or too narrow-minded to appreciate said performer's honesty/musicianship/carefully cultivated persona, etc.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

are you ok alyssa? i am sorry if i made you angry, i dont know, i just wasnt thinking. i'll be honest with you, ive had a rough week, my mom is going into surgery in a few weeks, and shes self employed, so money is going to be a bit of a problem, then i missed the bus on the way home, it was raining, i got splashed by some jock in a suv, i was just pissed you know. i heard that conor thing, and i was just annoyed.

i think i needed to vent, i hope you, and conor, and everyone else understands that, i didnt mean it, i hope you dont think bad of me, sometimes i just flip a little, and say bad things about indie stars and other people i dont really know, i guess its not a healthy way of venting.

i really hope im not going to rot in hell, and i dont want anyone to want me to die, especially not right now, with the problems my mum is having.

thanks for being reasonable about it though, sometimes people go a little off the deep end and overreact, but it seems you have more about you than that

i tried to apologise keith, i did, didnt you ever make a mistake? i didnt mean to make you or alyssa angry, like i said, things were rough, i just lashed out at the nearest indie band, i didnt really think it would make anyone angry, i hope you are not angry for too long, it got better for me, i mean, its ok now, after my initial lashing out? i think the same will happen for you too. thanks for being so good about all this by the way, i think it shows how rational and easy going conors fans are, i mean, we are talking some good people. some korn fan or whatever would just have told people to fuck off or something, i think conors fans are more classy than that

good luck with everything man,

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 1 December 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd make him die of something stupid and un-dramatic. Like... say... getting stung by a massive jelly-fish.

"Oh, it's so awful Emo Kid One!"
"What's happened Emo Kid Two?!"
"Sob, sob! Conor Oberst is dead!"
"Oh no! Sob sob! How did he die?"
"He was stung by a giant jelly-fish!"
"..."
"What?"
"Hahaha."

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 1 December 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually don't go for "casual random violence against defenseless emo naifs" humor, and I really never actually have to hear any Bright Eyes music without going out of my way to hear it, so the only thing I have against Oberst is, to reiterate, the fact that he is Bert Vicious.

But I get endless amusement out of the phrase "beaten to death with his own shoes". What if he wears Chuck Taylors? Do you know how long that would take?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 1 December 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

God does not rock. I think occasionally he might boogie a bit, but only to gospel.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Say what you want about Conor Oberst, but he isn't nearly as bad as Stalin or Nixon or Pol Pot.

I like Bright Eyes just fine. Nice record.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

admittedly, I've only heard one Bright Eyes song, and I can't remember the name of it but it was Christmas-themed and it was terrible.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know your music taste, but it's entirely possible that you might like Bright Eyes. I can't really understand why somebody wouldn't.

Conor Oberst seems like a bit of a twat, but it's a good record. Maybe a bit over-ernest.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

you make it sound like he only has one record, when I know that is definitely not the case...

I dunno, the song I heard, the guitar playing had this naive appeal to it but the lyrics were like third-rate Palace, delivered with a terrible sqwuak and none of the subtlety or weird phrasing that Oldham's got. Just lots of adolescent posturing, lots of "nevers" and "always"s, like everything is happening to him for either the first or last time - OH THE DRAMA = blech. Granted you shouldn't judge an artist by one song but hey, I got other stuff to listen to...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

What the fuck...

Alyssa Braun (Alyssa Braun), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I just went All Music Guide, and you're right. He's done a lot of stuff. I've only heard 'Lifted...' and I quite liked it.

Anyways, go listen to your other stuff and enjoy.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont where all you guys are from, and i think your mostly from the pansy country England or some shit, im from canada which really dosent matter because i mean it suck sto but England is worse, or london whatever

Fine, Alyssa, I'll give Bright Eyes a chance.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm from the US, but I like a Bright Eyes album. So maybe I just prove your theory. What was that theory again? Oh yeah:

Canada > Britain
Britain = Oberst haters.

Fuck, I'm so bad at math.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess someone who sputters.

what is emo?

Alyssa Braun (Alyssa Braun), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are all these people telling us how much they like Bright Eyes' music? I fucking love Fevers & Mirrors, but this thread is about Conor Oberst dying.

There's only one thing more annoying than people who answer rhetorical questions and think they're clever while doing it, and that's people who can't take the piss out of bands and musicians they like.

Stupid (Stupid), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

you all are all stupid as hell. theres nothing wrong with conor. he is a great guy. he is very loving. if you ppl can't see how much talent he has then u need to all fuck off!!! conor kicks-ass!

i treat you like a book on a shelf
i don't take you up that often
'cause i know that i've completed you

go explore other women
the geography of their bodies
but there's just one map you'll need
your a boomerang, you'll see
you will return to me

i still can't believe the same guy who actually committed to tape that awful awful metaphor in the first example could write something so tender and heartbreaking as the second, and in the same song no less!

that's the essence of conor - great talent, needs an editor...call him the thomas wolfe of indie rock if you will

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude that is so not remotely tender or heartbreaking

F. Anthony O'Reilly (Ferg), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't agree that Conor is particularly talented (dude can't write a good lyric to save his life, can't sing, isn't a very good guitarist, and melody and harmony are most certainly not his friend), but the "needs an editor" part is definitely true.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

one thing, perhaps the only thing, that cracks me up about bright eyes is that c.o. seems to be following the path blazed in the 70s by such tender singer-songwriters as james taylor (who irritates me about as much). on record, you get an emotionally dripping mass of sensitivity whilst in real life you get a coked-up egomaniac.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I suppose that it is an egomaniacal impulse to romanticize/immortalize every sad moment of your life in song.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It takes an egomaniacal impulse for anyone to get on stage. And 99% of all lyrics are total crap when taken out of their musical context. Really though, most of y'all are just hating because Conor gets more pussy then you.

wow i just have to say one thing: this is hilarious... you guys crack me up.. seriously

i really like conor and his music, i've seen him live and the great thing is he doesn't candy-coat anything. you get what you see. saddle creek produces good stuff, if you like emo.- which i'm guessing most of you don't

but you know, if conor oberst were to read this thread, he'd probably laugh his ass off, most of it is bitchin funny!

I like how half the songs on Lifted make me agree (esp. the acoustic ones - jesus!) with the haters and the other half make me want to bawl and scream you're all heartless assholes. It's the Desaparecidos album that makes me swing to the latter (if you've heard Desaparecidos).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

one drunken night this summer I actually had a debate with Lifted and it won, so I'm impressed.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Conor should go more Cure vs. Conor should go more Dylan vs. Conor should just make Desaparecidos albums and continue to mine that fine line between Weezer and Fugazi.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

At school one day, Brandi said that Conor was " Like, 2 weeks ago! Don't you thinks so, Alyssa?" and Alyssa found herself agreeing. She rushed home and trashed her Bright Eyes screensaver and hid her Lifted cd in her little sisters room, (who was thrilled to find it)before Brandi stopped by after volleyball.
As to Conor, he died an old and happy man who often told his grandkids about the time he was on TV. The End

if conor wasnt made the poster boy of 2002-2003 then none of you i'm going to jump on the bandwagon and ridicule him, he was the indie rock prodigy i've known about his music since the 90's and i knew he was destined for great things. he spoke to the indie rock snobs of the 90's just like elliott smith did. we knew of his substance abuse and his depression because we took his lyrics as literal to our own lives. but corporate america doesnt. lifted is not his best album it was praised by the media and noted as a we're going to acknowledge you because youre speaking out against a president that the 30ish and younger crowd despise just as much. people were making fun of emo back in 97 but it became a mainstream word in 2000. he was called emo, hes not emo his indie rock just like elliott smith just like pavement. garage rock became big in 2002 garage rock has always been around no one tried to sell it to corporate america, it was part of indie rock. just was twee pop is. when you want to discuss musicians learn something about the history behind their music and the music world they live in, most of conor's lyrics are written exactly like his musical hero simon joyner. so whatever you think youre wrong.

i understand why a lot of you don't enjoy what he does but talking about it is only going to give him more publicity. i've been a fan of his since fevers and mirrors and i enjoyed that record through many years. as i listen to it sometimes now, i come to understand that in my own personal case, i was wallowing in someone else's despair because i did not know myself. there's a need to come to realize certain things about others before you can learn about yourself. not because of your similarities to them but your differences, rather. and it's helpful to peers of his to come to grow as people do, even though they might have grown in the same light regardless- it helps along with the process of growing up. and there's nothing wrong with that. the stereotypes and images discussed repeatedly through this forum, in my opinion, is really pointless. who cares what the hell he looks like? the clothing on someone certainly does not make who they are, nor their haircut or the way their voice sounds. helping people is not in your appearance. just something to chew on, besides that fencepost.

even though conor oberst has been successful, he's still indie...and he uses his popularity for good, like bashing clear channel. it's easy to say that things are original and unoriginal, because there's not a place you can really draw the line...everything is a derivitive of something else. nirvana sounds just like sonic youth, i like nirvana, weezer sounds like the pixies, i like weezer, the strokes sound like late sixties music, i like the strokes, ppl build on other ppl's ideas, radiohead's early stuff wasn't all that great, but look at them now...the flaming lips used to sound like old misfits, look at them now...you learn from the masters, and then you grow from there...conor oberst is only 23...give the guy some credit

Desaparecidos is the better band of all of his creations. It's better he uses that to post semi-good ideas than for him to wallow in fake self-degradtion and rejection. No one likes an overdramagtic martyr for six or seven records. It is time he moved on and put all his time into Desaparecidos.

I can't believe this 'conversation' has been going on since august last year, and i know it kinda stoped in march, but i just found this place so hear me out. your all fucking insane! Conor O'burst has amazing talent - yeah, he may not have the greatest musical talent, but his ability to portray passion through his music is amazing. People connect with the lyrics he rights, because people go through the same shit. So to bag him is bagging human emotion. And to do that is just heartless. I don't know all about this 'egomaniac' argument because i live in australia and he's not exactly a poster boy over here. Every now and then i might find a little column on him written in rolling stone, but that's it. If he was truly an egomaniac, wouldn't i hear of him a lot more? Wouldn't he fucking tour here?

In short, don't dis bright eyes. When he get's past his angst, he'll become even more of an amazing artist. He's great now, but he's still growing.

(oh, and before any of you bag him more, listen to fevers and mirrors...and actually listen to it. If you can't relate to it, your not human). That's all i have to say.

How come it's usually fans of sad music make the argument that their music represents true human emotion, and if you don't like it you can't be human? I've heard the case made before. It seems like Conor covers a far smaller range of human emotion than say George Michael. He has up beat songs AND ballads, so suck on that.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

i quite like conor and i totally buy nabisco's argument on some other thread that he is perfectly aware of how commonplace and essentially dull - but not unimportant - his emotions are.

the new albums are kinda cool: the singer-songwriter one is especially good: touching at times, and even ocasionally eloquent. pretty melodies and fine, simple guitar playing. emmylou harris is great on it, too, even if her unison choire sometimes sound a little uninspired. that song about wandering around NYC with a broad and a coke problem is fucking great. there are a lot of blatantly great quotes, like:

"i've been sleeping so strange at night/ with a head full of pesticides"

and

"if you promise to stay conscious i will try and do the same/
yeah we might die from medication but we sure killed all the pain"

i know this is not rilke, but it is nice enough. he's being pretentious, but he is being so on behalf of simplicity.

on the 'electronically inspired' album, he's biting over more that he can chew. again the pretentiousness, but this time on behalf of complexity or mysteriousness or civilization critique. lyrics are very abstract but not very deep or subtle. not nearly as much of an artistic success as the first one.

anyway, live and let live, i think that he is as interesting young guy to follow.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

one thing that strikes me, though, is how he provides this almost institutionalized 'alternative' for every 'misfit', 'nerd' or 'strange kid'. he is sometimes presenting his themes (death, insignificance, the futility of the civilized world, loneliness, and, ocasionally, love) as if they're brand new. but then again, most of his audience is probably very young (teenagers), so maybe these themes are brand new to them in an artistic context.

well, i'm just talking not to fall asleep.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)
