I can safely say, however, that Killing Joke at their dullest or least realized (say, the Outside the Gate album) are a thousand times more interesting than DMB.
― Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 August 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)
I would say with a perfectly straight face that there is INARGUBALY better and more interesting music than DMB out there (and no, I'm not necessarily talking about Killing Joke or even about any specific artists that I personally happen to espouse). Couple that, however, with the apparent fact that DMB fans champion the band as if Dave himself was the first man to ever run his fingers across the strings of a guitar and you may find the reasons for both my ire and further disinterest in the band. I don't see how someone, having explored further musical options open to them, would ever go back to listening to DMB.

You can say that all you want. To bad that doesn't make it true though. You might actually have an even motive behind your fanaticism if that was the case. I see/play/listen to many different types and styles of music every day, it comes with the major. A reason I like DMB is because they play so many diverse styles of music and it fills my void of something different. Guess that puts to rest your theory of me not being well-versed in different kinds of music. You're getting all upset for the same reason I was, and neither are really 100% correct. I'm done if you are.

Hey since I'm new, can I play my get out of jail free card and ask: Is there an appropriate thread on this site to discuss DMB appreciation?
www.dmbontv.com
I just discovered this site yesterday. Lovers will be enthralled. Haters please take a look if you want, if for nothing more than Dave's induction of Traffic into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. The lot who isn't familiar, you might find this site helpful as well. The Woodstock clips (Ants Marching being a highlight) are bitchin. Noteworthy tributes to Lennon, Nelson and Cash, and of course...

I'm DMB fan, I think my credibility is about zero with this crowd. I'd love it if people saw and heard what I see and hear, but as far as jumpstarting any reassessment... well, that would take an act of god. I've been a fan so long it's become almost unconditional. Even if I grow out of their music one day, their music still changed my life (before anyone says it, don't. I'm not sorry for me. and before anyone says that other thing, yes, I love many bands and many different kinds of music as well. of my 200ish concert stubs, only 34 are DMB - the next highest for a single act is 5 shows, that's nawt so bad!).
Their catalog is so much larger than most would imagine. I'm sure some of you know. C'mon, it's ok to come out. You're with friends!
I don't like most of the radio songs either! OK I like half of them.

Not me, though. My hate for Dave Matthews is not only my biggest hate, it's my first hate; the first music I learned to really, really despise.
Hell, the entirety of my current relationship is based around me and my girlfriend's shared hatred of Dave Matthews. I'm not willing to sacrifice my relationship just so that I might maybe learn to like that squealing chimp you call Dave Matthews.

See Carter Go in "a view from the inside".
The Lillywhite/Everyday/Busted Stuff trifecta put a few fans through the wringer; it was almost like having one(albeit, really good)album for, what has it been, the last five, six years? From the sound of the clips, this album is the second-coming of BTCS, but could be greater.
*grinning*
Kenny, I am not campaigning so much for people to like what I like, but more to encourage friendly discourse with those who might already like DMB, or at least don't hate them, and find a thread where random DMB-loving freaks and DMB-tolerators are "safe".
Of course you're safe here too, Kenny... ;)

I have insomnia.
So I'm trying my best to keep my zeal in check and be a good 'lil DMB crusader. I've back-read many of the DMB-related threads (including the loved & hated epic) and have a good idea of what's been done. I intentionally hijacked this thread to avoid creating a new one (treading lightly), as this one seemed the mildest, and most balanced. From what I've read in this thread, the DMB fans not only can spell and know how to release the caps lock, but are genuine, insightful music lovers, more representative of the fans I know. Even the oft-ruthless ILM posse is playing nice here (comparatively).
I think y'all should join us for the Gorge this summer, sit around the bonfire and have a smoke with us (once in the element, you'll be easier to subdue and brainwash).
In Nick Hornby's "Songbook," he writes an essay about one particular pop song that, while it might not be defined as masterful, would not leave his system. The idea behind the essay was this; when we listen to a song over and over, we do so because we need to "solve" them. I've always felt that we only get something from a tune, if at all, when we're ready to receive it's message. For instance, I've heard the Indigo Girls' Closer to Fine a hundred times on the radio and never really cared for it, but one day, amidst a chaos and anxiety-filled couple of years (living in the bay area for the first time), I heard what they were singing about, and was grateful for the reminder. Now every time it comes on I pay attention, and it doesn't even matter whether or not it's a "good" song.
So here are a few DMB lyrics, not Top, because it is impossible to narrow down. (We zealouts can barely manage a *top 5 songs* that doesn't constantly fluctuate)
"My head wont leave my head alone"
"I'd like to show you what's inside!(but I still don't care, if you don't like it)"
"Forget about the reasons, and the treasons we are seekingForget about the notion, that our emotion can be kept at bayForget about being guilty,we are innocent instead"
"Turns out not where but who you're with that really matters, that really mattersAnd hurts not much when you're around, when you're aroundAnd if you hold on tight to what you think is your thingYou may find you're missing all the rest. She run up into the light, surprised,Her arms are open. Her minds eye is
Seeing things from a better side than most can dreamOn a clearer road I feel, oh you could say she's safeWhatever tears at her, whatever holds her downAnd if nothing can be done,She'll make the best of what's around"
"so here we are , all of us stand aroundwe're leaning heavy on eachotheralways wonderingwhat is it lies behindthe worried eyes of one another
I believe it's LOVE!hiding therein the shadows in the darkness, BABY!"
"Shut up I'm thinking!I had a clue now it's gone forever"

in any event, i'd rather go mormon than go dave
....and yes i have seen him in concert before i had any preconceived notions of him (before i'd even heard of him). despite being surrounded by friends (who i was friends with despite their poor taste in music), there was nothing that made me like or want to like his music. he just seemed like a monkey beating off on a guitar playing horribly predictable songs that never seemed to have a beginning or end. then a year later, i found out that assholes make up a great deal of his fanbase and that didn't help his case, either.

"Try "Lost Souls." If that appeals (and it's hard for me to picture it not, as it's so lush, melancholy, and gorgeous), the rest of the first album should appeal as well. It's mostly atmospheric like that, though there are some uptempo britpop type things. The second album is nice as well. And if you're still feeling prickly about confounding the haters here, and feeling larky too, check out some songs from the new 6 Organs of Admittance album, The School of the Flower. Think of it as Dave at dawn on mushrooms on the shores of the Caspian Sea. A Dave/6 Organs fan could wreak havoc here."
I think you are my fairy-godperson on this thread.

You were right about doves, this is right up my alley. I put on Zither first, and right away it reminded me of my 2nd favorite artist, Badly Drawn Boy. I don't know if you hear that comparison a lot (?). I also heard parts that reminded me of Wilco, Thomas Dybdahl, and even a little Zero 7 (3 of my top 5). Very lush as you said, earthy and sonic at once. I'm enjoying "Here It Comes" and "A House" quite a lot.
I've been unable to get ahold of any 6 Organ so far... maybe it's because I need to hear Banhart first. I'll look into that tonight. Thank you!
