piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They've been recording it across the street from my old apartment on 12th street. I saw Julian in Japonica last week.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yay!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are the Strokes?

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

at the playback of 5 tracks for mojo,
andrew male reports that when 'meet me...'
comes on ; 'at this point everyone in
the room is on their feet, nervously bobbing
about, desperately wishing that the others
weren't there so that they could, you
know, jump up and down a bit'.

can't wait.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw three Strokes wandering around during the blackout. I've been seeing them everywhere lately.

I can't wait to hear this record. It's gonna be fantastic.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Room on Fire" is a *fantastic* Stevie Nicks song.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

not crazy about the title, it's no is this is

but yeah, I'm excited to hear it and a little nervous for them

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

are Jet the new Strokes?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

hey ! yeah ! i love that jet track - what's it called again ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are the Strokes?

A question oft considered.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

f-ck my old boots if the cover of the 'jet' single
(jusy googled) hasnt got some one proudly sporting a
'DISCO SUCKS' t shirt on. well that's put me off for a start.

'dance is dead' and now this !

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the guy from jet likes to go off about how much he hates rap and dance music in interviews, poor dumb kid

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i take it '12:51' refers to the song's running time?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

not if it's the first single, d'ya think?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Fire in the disco!

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(it was a joke...)

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, i'm thick

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i'm just needlessly obscure.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

count me jazzed, too

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait, and I'm glad there's apparently no song called "Raga," after all.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe reptilia is the raga

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

let the madness begin.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

count me jazzed, too

there's jazz on the new record? *shudder*

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

thye are hip-to-the-beat daddy-o!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Who produced it?

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

same dude as last time i think

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

db, 'jazzed' is just my attempt at using 80s-style nihilistic terms - unfortunately I'm not aware of any actual jazz on the new Strokes record.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope there is some: its the only reason why I'd actually bother with this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i imagine if the strokes actually tried jazz (or anything except the minimalist rock that is their metier) many of you would come forward only to ridicule them for the attempt.

anyhow, i trust in their taste and i expect this to be good. i'm excited.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps "minimalist" wasn't the best choice of words. but you know: bold (ahem) strokes, clean guitar lines, so on.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

they have so many catchy melodies - I'm sure that jazz versions would be interesting

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"pickin' on the strokes" and "a jazz tribute to the strokes" are just a few well-placed singles away.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"pickin' on the strokes"

Wasn't the basic idea behind the unreleased Ryan Adams version of "Is This It?"

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean "Wasn't That The..."

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yep same producer gordon raphael.
they x-perimented with the boy godrich at first
but it wasn't to be casablancas saying that
he was all 'this doesn't sound right' and in response nigel g
was all 'look who's the producer here' so they were all
'sayonara'. and shit.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know if I'd go as far as to say I'm "excited," but I'm certainly curious.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone else feel like this record could be the definitive blow for the "is this it = a victory of context" camp?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

english please, college boy?
;)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean 'is this it' was only good because of The Times In Which We Lived In, and their shortcomings will be revealed by The Times In Which We Live In Now?

bah, i say.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this to suggest that people are anticipating this album in the same way that portly middle-aged guys were expecting "the Phantom Menace" to magically transport them back to their youthful years of pre-adolescent wonderment?

YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean 'is this it' was only good because of The Times In Which We Lived In, and their shortcomings will be revealed by The Times In Which We Live In Now?

yeah, basically..

the popular criticism at the time was that is this it? was difficult to extrapolate beyond. it was, and still is, hard to imagine them doing anything but walk on the spot...

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

no i don't follow. is this a post-9/11 thing we're talking ?
like, how will this affect the strokes exactly ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes they shuffle on the spot

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

also teeter

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The first alb is timeless, man!! Don't see why they can't just come up w/ another ten or so really really gd pop-rock songs, christ knows they've had long enough - dumping the Radiohead goon seems like a hopeful sign, at least

Julio, there's more to life than jazz you know

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The reviews for the record should use dogs instead of stars, i.e. "it hurts my head like [x many] dogs"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

tracer, are you a strokes hater too? i'm so saddened by that

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a link to live versions of three songs off the new album --- 12:51, Reptilia, and one that was called "Ze Newie" but has been retitled...

http://www.myiway.com/newstrokes/

I think they are quite good.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(Spencer, I was trying to make a funny with my original comment. I stress "try" :( )

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

fritz i don't hate the strokes!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

how could i hate the strokes, I AM FABRIZIO MORETTI!! i just bought a townhouse condo with a rooftop garden!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i get junk mail from you

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

dogs can be quite sonorous.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

tracer hates dogs and the strokes and to paraphrase wc fields, he can't be all bad

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I was really hoping for a Mike Chapman production job. I think he might be retired, though.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

there have to be a couple of scrappy records before their "parallel lines", be patient

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

scrappy "shitty"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

FABRIZIO!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm keeping my fingers crossed for j0hn's tuba solo fantasy.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

''Julio, there's more to life than jazz you know''

I know I know...but if you read the thread it was spencer that started it!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hey I love the rock you all: as long as the guitars are out of tune and the singer is screaming imcromprehensibles.

its gonna be ok.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I must admit to being rather disappointed that they didn't use my titles

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! this sounds fantastic john. thanks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I poked around their site the other day and all I could think of was how could anyone still be bothered to discuss a strokes record in 2003.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what was "Ze Newie" retitled to? i liked the live versions i've heard of that

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - the piece was a put-on - its point was "everybody's gonna be rushing to be the first person to say something about the next Strokes album, so why not review it before it actually exists?" i.e. there probably is no tuba solo - I wrote that "review" back in January I think

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

tuba solo

http://www.angelfire.com/ak/captainoftheexplorer/images/deathtoungue.jpg

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I really really hope it incorporates South African music styles in some way.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"dogs can be quite sonorous."

Yeah, have you heard the Jazz Wolf CD? It's no Jazz Loon, but wooo weee is it a doozie.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, when does this leak. any of you pro writers heard it yet?

samuel, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Fritz, I was talking about Blondie!

Tracer Moretti (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I played the first LP 47 times in a row and now it is making a fine coaster underneath my beer glass. Like sex witha virgin, really great and all but ... NEXT!

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

''Julio - the piece was a put-on - its point was "everybody's gonna be rushing to be the first person to say something about the next Strokes album, so why not review it before it actually exists?" i.e. there probably is no tuba solo - I wrote that "review" back in January I think''

oh yeah, that was sarcasm from me to you know. I wouldn't have fallen for it as I am so in touch with the indie scene.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

mike taylor in accusing people of being behind the times shocker! (sorry mike)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

matt ! where id you/they get those strokes trax from ?
are they the live versions (am at work so can't hear them yet)?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"12:51" is a motherfucker of a song, all verse and no chorus, massif newwavey guitar line, and considering I heard it, oh, close to 200 times yesterday and didn't absolutely loathe it, i'd say it's a keeper. This video will be epic: rock on, Tron.

Charlito, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

which track has this Billie Jean drumbeat?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

which track these days doesn't?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, do you really want me to list?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yes obv I am being literalist ;)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

well the list is only 17 tracks long ;)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Piscesboy, I was referred to that site from a webblog called donewaiting.com.... Don't know how they found out about it....they are all live versions, one sound like from Japan....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard the new single on the radio today. "single." ok maybe it's just a leaked track. i didn't catch the name. i really liked it. the vocals were VERY low in the mix though, what's up with that? a rough mix perhaps?

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

total running time : 33 minutes.

how cool is that ?

this may well be the shortest running time of a major label album release since ...well, dunno the sixties maybe.
nice to know that in a world where everyone else is padding their shit
out with remixes, extraas, 2nd discs and videos, that the strokes are having precisely none of it and have lopped about 30 minutes off the average 21st century album running time. take it or leave it heh heh.

room on fire : 33 minutes
be here now : 73 minutes

piscesboy, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

weezer?

todd burns (toddburns), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

slayer - reign in blood - any longer would be too much to take in.

The soddin Strokes ...fleecing their fans with 2/3 of an album running time for full price.

Even more reasons to slate them !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

front cover looks a bit like a 5th form art project. nice though.

http://www.thestrokes.com/index2.html

9/10 in the NME. that's a bold claim.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't 'Elastica' 36 minutes long?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The soddin Strokes ...fleecing their fans with 2/3 of an album running time for full price.

i genuinely hope you're taking the piss. find me a 74 minute album that has at least 33 minutes of essential music on it.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 September 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't sacrifice a second of Lull's Cold Summer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

can we soulseek this yet ? it's out in a month
and there's no sign of it !

piscesboy, Thursday, 11 September 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

WAIT UNTIL THE RELEASE DATE TO LISTEN TO IT, IT'S LOADS MORE FUN THAT WAY

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what, wait until release day and then download it ?
sorry i'm not with you. what's on your mind ?

piscesboy, Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

release dates are so twentieth century

petrochemical arms (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 11 September 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

every track should be a number one says the nme. how quaint.
anyone actually heard this yet ? soulseekers ?

piscesboy, Thursday, 18 September 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What a lifeless album.

Worthless.

hmm, Friday, 26 September 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked 'the end has no end' in a Knack, ELO, Cars, Buggles, Trickster(UK) kind of way. In other words, I kind of hate it, but like it because it reminds me of those shitty songs that Ted Roos used to listen to in 7th grade.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Judging by the first 30 seconds of each track, it's terrific. Could still stand to be more disco but their sound is just as immediate and fun second time out.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

tom otm

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Fun? On first listen, I find it incredibly grey and dreary and good God does Julie C *really* have to use that same drawling vocal schtick on EVERY FUCKING TRACK?

I still genuinely can't comprehend what it is that makes this band so superior to so many other indie bands in the eyes of so many people.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt do you hate Kraftwerk?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you saying the Strokes are robots?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuz that only makes them cooler

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly! They're not quite robotic enough sometimes but even an android can cry.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

will these robots short-circuit? I'd pay to see that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Grey and dreary = good.

I associate the first album with the winter after it came out, I listened to it a lot driving back and forth to work and being miserable.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is fantastic - basically as good as the last. It's better than most indie stuff because it's disco with sad crooning on top! But does anyone remember The Smoking Popes? The only worrying thing is that Casablancas sounds quite a bit like Liam Gallagher on the first track...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

quite a bit like Liam Gallagher on the first track...

Right!! I was thinking the same thing. I'll have to give it a second go then with that Kraftwerk-disco-with-guitars perspective because the first time I had to quit after 5 songs. Yeah grey and dreary sums it up.

Omar (Omar), Friday, 26 September 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it the opposite of grey and dreary. I think it's more upbeat and muscular. Then again, I think Morrissey is a comedian.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 26 September 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the strokes are gonna get massive when "under control" gets released as a single. it's just so fucking timeless. i can't decide what it sounds like. it's down to george harrison, the stones, tom petty, sam cooke, bob dylan and even roy orbison. easy shortcut: the TRAVELLING WILBURYS!!! make-out song of the year, no question. (missy's "pass the dutch" a close second)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 September 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not in response to Yanc3y, but I love that the people who dismissed them as VU-clones on the last album will have to keep digging to figure out who they're ripping off now, or admit that they just might be a great band in their own right.

BrianB, Friday, 26 September 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that's been the case alot though, they've been compared to so many bands that all the comparisons fall down individually, and yet people still pursue them.

I still genuinely can't comprehend what it is that makes this band so superior to so many other indie bands in the eyes of so many people

For me what makes them superior is I couldn't be bothered listening to so many other indie bands.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

just listening to it for the first time, it's gorgeous!
had the liam soundalike kneejerk response as well...
will definately give it a few more "spins" this weekend

willem (willem), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

They're not quite robotic enough

This has always been their problem. The day they finally stop pretending they're a rock band of any sort is the day they finally will click (please note for people who insist that using guitars that way is the whole point that I didn't say anything about that, though I think that's a large part of their not-working-for-me -- personally I want them to screw over the rock clowns, go all Screamers-style on keyboards and THEN tell everyone to fuck off).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I just want them to wash their hair!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

am I right or am I right?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

strokes drive like this

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

strokes jokes

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Under Control" = under-produced, turn up the gloss and get in a string section for the single release say I (OK maybe they should just do it as a Britpop Remix or something).

"The End Has No End" is the inescapable one on my first few run-throughs.

I love how the Strokes of all people are the indie band for people on ILM who don't like indie much any more.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, "the end has no end" is def. my favourite so far.

the strokes are lyrically pop.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I still genuinely can't comprehend what it is that makes this band so superior to so many other indie bands in the eyes of so many people.

Because no other indie rock band sounds even REMOTELY like this.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard it's on SoulSeek, but I sure as hell can't find it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The only disappointment for me is that they've slowed down Between Love And Hate a bit from its days as 'ze newie'.

This record could actually be really really enormous, couldn't it? I mean even apart from in Britain.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the more I think about it the more exciting it is. I'm glad other people like "The End Has No End" as much as I do, it seems it could be as hatable as it is lovable, doesn't it?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure I'm excited, I'm excited because I'm really enjoying the record but the knock-on effects of the New Rock actually hitting really really big would be catastrophic I think because apart from the Strokes it all hurts my head worse than a hundred dogs.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart Yancey.

David. (Cozen), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If Room On Fire becomes successful and major labels go off signing dozens more "THE Star Spangles" then they are worse than I give them credit for. ...It's exciting that the trendiest MTV anomaly of 2001 could turn into a career band. It doesn't seem like things like that should happen in America.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I like what I've heard from this album, but their guitar soloist is no Eliot Easton, sadly.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 26 September 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom otm re indie band for not indie band people, I just wish I could find the words to explain this to indie people who see them as part of the indie scene when really they seem to be something else to someone (s) elses.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 26 September 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what I mean is people comparing them to White Stripes etc, why, WHY?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 26 September 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

because they bleed ruby red rawk

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 September 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

god I hope not!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 26 September 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the end has no end is a perfect strokes song. (um... it also reminds me of 'alanis morisette' by wesley willis???! please ignore this)
i really want them to release under control as a single too, yeah, with strings!

minna (minna), Saturday, 27 September 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

that's like alice coltrane minna.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 27 September 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

DISCO?!!

I'm worried that my complete non-comprehension of this whole thing is nearing Raggett-sized proportions.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 27 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The enthusiasm is infectous.

(Ned's just big-boned)

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 27 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, I don't care if it's affected or not: Julian's thugged-out dis-and-dat Noo York accent is just perfect. What the fuck, where have all the good rock 'n' roll New York accents been since the early '80s?

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 27 September 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

DISCO?!!

The bass groove that picks up around 1:58 of "Between Love and Hate" is two notes away from being the "Heart of Glass" riff.

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 27 September 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned's just big-boned

Oi.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 September 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops.

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, of course they're part of the indie scene (whatever that is) - claiming they aren't because they appeal to a wider group of people is like claiming The Chemical Brothers aren't part of the dance scene because non-dance people are into them.

Actually, the Chems comparison stands quite nicely, I think, because they do appear to be people's token rock act (alongside the Darkness, hem hem).

I'm actually starting to like this now, despite the Casablancas factor - its the clipped guitars and motorik drumming that do it, but whenever Julian tries to 'take off' with his vocals, he either seems to go the way of Bono or Kelly Fucking Jones.

12:51 sounds like Weezer.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 27 September 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but there's no such thing as a "token" rock act, by virtue of being born you hear ten million rock records.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 27 September 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And of course they're part of it but what I meant is that there is obviously something distinctly appealing about them which isn't an indie thing really, or if it is it's a lost one, something which as praise is more a popist thing in itself maybe, and I don't think that can be explained easily to people who are listening to loads of rock music, since they're obviously looking for something different anyway.

It's not about a wider group of people, my only point is that with bands like the Strokes the discourse surrounding them tends to be quite fierce, particularly given their level of hype, and the point is many people see them as an alternative to the rest of popular rock, rather than a new addition to it or the saviours of it. Hence I've had arguments with friends who are into rock whereby they tell me this or that band is better and it's kind of missing the point, that the Strokes, as you say, are not a rock band for rock fans. But this is NOT tokenism, not in any major way anyway.

Aside from all that my basic stance on the Strokes is that they make pop music with guitars which is not desperate Blink 182 style stuff or any such thing and not laden down with humour either, not that I don't like Electric 6 or whatever.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 27 September 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it the opposite of grey and dreary. I think it's more upbeat and muscular. Then again, I think Morrissey is a comedian.

Spencer Chow and I -- separated at birth?

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 27 September 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i just downloaded this album and have been playing loud while vaccuming the house... honestly, it was simply perfect! love tracks #2 and #5, and the part where he goes "give me some time, i just need-a-little-time' is my favourite

chomicat, Saturday, 27 September 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Morrissey is a discontented comedian, obviously.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 27 September 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how the Strokes of all people are the indie band for people on ILM who don't like indie much any more.

ha, talking with someone a few months ago, I said that my early Strokes hand-wringing on ilx was sort of like my last cathartic 'indie kid' moment.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 27 September 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

man, I really really really like this album!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it's bumped some records down on my list for the year. No. 2 as of now (I refuse to let anything top ARE Weapons)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

it's dreamy

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

they need to break up after this record. i'd gladly listen to another album like this (a la tp & the heartbreakers), but the mystique would wear off a bit. i mean, are they even capable of making a record that doesn't sound like these two? (and if not, is that really a bad thing? ans: no!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"i mean, are they even capable of making a record that doesn't sound like these two?"

I wish they'd learn how to record drums.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The drums sound great! They need to add a horns... and actual keyboards (ie not guitaralikes)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine horns every time I listen to "Under Control"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The drums sound great?

Maybe this thread is about some other band named The Strokes.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them anyway. They work for this sound. They might have to switch it up a little when they find that horn section.

The guitars on "Automatic Stop" and "Between Love & Hate" are meant to be horns quite obviously!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

johnny fever you're a lamoid! them drums are incredible. my wink is my word, diggez-vous?

rip tide (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ways in which a 3rd Strokes album could be terrific:

- more of the same (though this is the least terrific option)

- totally sell out - keyboards, strings etc. (could be awesome, could be mostly unterrific)

- do a Talking Heads and get a hot producer in for album #3

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

haha but tom they already got a 'hot producer' in nigel godrich but it didn't work out (thankfully)

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i think good ol' gordon raphael was once an Ilx FAP attendant, wasn't he?

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

godrich is a cold producer, like a particularly slimey fish

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

*cough* trevor horn *cough*

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Strokes are to Orange Juice as Interpol are to Josef K (only rather more so on current showing). Or as Teenage Fanclub once were to Big Star.

I thought the earlier Strokes stuff owed a lot to The Smiths in the way in which the vocals related to the instrumentation, key changes etc but the new songs from what I've heard should really be being issued on Postcard.

Not that the resemblance is a bad thing, not at all. I just keep expecting to hear Edwyn Collins take the second verses.

Neil Willett (Neil Willett), Thursday, 2 October 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the only thing that i maybe miss from the album is the lightness of touch of a 'someday'. 'under control' comes close, though.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 2 October 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry but I think all of you have a pretty wack definition of "disco."

:) =) :P

I didn't like the first album, and from the two songs I heard of and all the praise it's getting (non-objective listen shocka!!), I believe I'm going to LOATHE this one.

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 2 October 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ways in which a 3rd Strokes album could be terrific:

- it must come out within the next six months and be produced by the Neptunes, include a duet with Liam Gallagher and thank the NME and AOL in the sleeve notes.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone feel like starting a "100 Reasons the Strokes Are Disco" thread? if there isn't one by tonight i'll do it myself.

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

but room on fire is totally a Sun Records album! Nick is totally channelling Scotty Moore on "Under Control!"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

and every song (melodically) sounds like something from the dan penn or doc pomus libraries.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck - is that why I love it?!!!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ways in which a 3rd Strokes album could be terrific:"

produced by steve albini, duets with debbie harry, dave vanian, and dave gahan, TONS of synth (but don't ditch the guitars)

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this album. Though I disagree about the disco thing. I say it's country!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the thought occurred to me last night. i had been trying to pen down the vibe i was getting from it and i was talking to my pops on the phone while the record was playing. "who's that covering dan penn?" he asked. *LIGHT BULB* i'm sending him the record tomorrow. he's gonna love it.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I do my humiliating climbdown and now and say that I like this a lot after a week or so of listening? Good, thanks. I like this a lot.

I still don't rate Julian Casablancas' vocals though - with a few exceptions, he always sounds hugely awkward around a tune, like he doesn't really know what to do with it and is just wandering around waiting for the good bit he's already written to come back again.

I think I also might have been wrong about the single sounding like Weezer. It's more Grandaddy without the muppetesque vocals.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I disagree about the disco thing. I say it's country!

It's reggae - obviously.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. Hang on. Which song is meant to be 'the reggae one'? I heard the album for the first time this evening and I was expecting something a bit more, well, reggae.

Also I did like the one at the end of the album that has the tiny bit of the 'Billie Jean' drum beat. But obviously I'd prefer their soon-to-be up-n-coming Neptunes-produced third album better, duhh.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracks 3 and 6 have slightly ska-tinged rhythms in places, but really that's like saying Mr Greaves by the Pixies is reggae.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

They look spectacularly dickish (dickesque?) and inherently dislikeable on the cover of the new Q Magazine. Especially Julian.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 October 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if the MP3s I have burned are not the "final mix," as "12:51" sounds diff. than the actual single (the drums sound much tinnier). Which makes me wonder about the rest of the trax...

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracks 3 and 6 have slightly ska-tinged rhythms in places

When I was reading the posts upthread about what could be done to improve their sound on the next record and adding horns was mentioned, I thought that that would totally ruin it because then they would sound too much like a ska or swing combo from the 90s. Maybe more on the last record than on this one though, and I think it might be Julian's voice that makes me think that more than anything. I say bring on the drum machines and electronic effects.

BrianB, Monday, 6 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is growing on me, just sounded like more of the same at first but there's some deceptive differences here. I'd even give it a longer shelf life than the last one. "Under control" and "12:51" are my favorite tracks so far.

Michael B, Monday, 6 October 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

after only a week and a half, i'm ready to call it a classic. it's one of the few records that's come out the past couple of years that has put butterflies in my stomach in anticipation of the next hook. these guys might be pricks, but DAMN they make some great music.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 6 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ROCK IS BACK!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 6 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 6 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm lovin it

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 6 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ROCK IS BACK!

It's like that 'men are back' ad campaign. Who did that piece of ass campaign? Jovan?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate this sudden bottleneck of great records coming out all at once. right now i have five reviews to turn in within the next two weeks, and that doesn't include my inevitable strokes or rapture pieces! but yeah, the strokes are so fucking great. "you talk way too much" is my new fave cut.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

does that guitar line in "the end has no end" remind anyone else of the opening riff to "sweet child of mine?"

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the high hats during the verse on "Meet Me In the Bathroom", very Stephe Morris "Regret"-style.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yay

David. (Cozen), Monday, 6 October 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The opening of "What Ever Happened" always makes me think of Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen".

BrianB, Monday, 6 October 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

me too!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i think what elevates this record for me (since, yes, it's obviously just a collection of gimmicks and riffs and half-remembered ideas from driving to the barber shop with dad on saturday) is that the strokes seem to feel really lucky to have all this history to play with.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Presumably the hot-producer move for their 3rd album would have to be something that responds to the DFA without actually being the DFA. I vote for the Martini Bros.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

tim otm, cf. their "missy queen" remix.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(off-topic alert)

Hey Gabbo have you heard "Happiness"? It sounds like Kitchens of Distinction's "Gone World Gone"! Listening to their "mix"-cd Cruising I've become convinced that the Martini Bros have the most expansive perspective of rock/dance collision of *anyone* currently working in the game.

Also their live performance was the best rock concert I'd seen in ages.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

sam j.: my feelings/auditory perception exactly. can't wait to hear the final LP/CD when it comes out...

willem (willem), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My Super-Indie Guy friend enthusiastically told me "It sounds like '93 era Stereolab! But with Julian Casablancas singing!"

Sigh. So close and yet so far. Despite the fact that I don't believe him (I mean, he is Mr. Super-Indie Guy.) I mean, honestly - why would anyone take Stereolab, and strip away what was good - i.e. super-amazing sexy French chicks singing about socialism - and replace them with some fat-ass trustafarian bloke?

I really want to hear it, though. Come on. Justify my hatred. I love to hate this band. I will be so disappointed if it isn't irredeemable shite.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I have always been into the Martini Brothers from what I've heard but can't seem to find a thing by them except the few tracks which appeared on comps, the Tok Tok remix etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, "12:51" sounds like superchunk covering the cars or vice versa. (has no one noticed what a dead ringer that opening guitar tone is?)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

not really a fan but the first album grew on me a little, so i downloaded this out of curiousity. I like the first song and the last song, nothing in between clicks in quite the same way. "12:51" doesn't strike me as a very strong, compared to previous singles, one of those rare songs that is just too short.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I was trying to remember what band The Strokes remind me of! Whoever said The Smoking Popes upthread, I thank you.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm a little surprised that the reviews I've seen so far (in places like Blender and Entertainment Weekly) have been so lukewarm. Of course, these reviews were also poorly written.

I saw them play last week; "Reptilia" is a MONSTER song.

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
this is holding up amazingly well.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

I kept "Whatever Happened," "Automatic Stop," "12:51," "Between Love & Hate," "Meet Me In The Bathroom" and "The End Has No End." Some nice developments but Julian annoyed me even more the second time around.

"The End Has No End." Directed by Sophie Muller!

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

o shit i need to see that - sophie muller KNOWS how to direct a motherfucking video! o man which stroke had to wear something lacey? does eva mendes wear granny panties in it?

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

It's not one of my faves of hers - some interesting visuals (It's like the end of 2001 mixed with the video for REM's "Tongue") but less lingering on facial expressions. Prolly cuz Julian et al can't act (or don't want to). he spends the video wearing sunglasses, which ain't a bad look. I think they always make more sense when they dress synthy new wave rather than butch-denim, reason "12:51" is my fave - all that neon!

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

wtf are granny panties? do i want to know?

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

what i loved most about the "12:51" video is how they took fake nonchalance to tha extreem, like they think they're too cool to even make their "boredom" look photogenic.

cost fucked madonna (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

granny panties are bigass panties - they cover the whole ass and more, sophie muller's always got some hot chick crawling around in really fancy $60 granny panties in her vids. o man she should've made this like a bizarro secret sequel to her no doubt 'simple kind of life' vid where julian's running around with some lacey ass sleeves like prince and all these hot chicks with smeared makeup come out of the woodwork all 'i'm late' and julian's all 'i'll never be yr beast of burden!' roadrunner beep beep and then fade to eva mendes crawling thru a wedding cake wearing some granny panties and then fade to lightning and some tree branches rubbing against a windowpane or whatever echo and the bunnymen vid motif sophie's working that week.

nice to see there's still a remarkable amount of good feeling around about them. i mean, who could honestly begrudge them anything?
a fun loving good time rock band with great songs that look ace and brought a bit of glamour back to the post britpop geetar band scene. hey what's not to like?!!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 1 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

haha cuz ENO quit? wtf.

from allmusic (written by Stephen SPAZ Schnee):

It must suck to be the Knack. First off, there was the huge unexpected success of their debut album, Get the Knack, followed almost immediately by the equally unexpected career-damaging "Knuke the Knack" underground campaign. If that wasn't bad enough, their superior sophomore release, ...But the Little Girls Understand, was universally and unfairly dismissed as an inferior rehash of the debut. After such a tumultuous two-year roller coaster ride, the boys in the Knack took a well-deserved breather. When their third album, Round Trip, emerged in 1981, Doug Fieger and the boys in the Knack had matured ten-fold and had created their best album to date. Produced by Jack Douglas, Round Trip had more musical layers than any Knack album before (or since). "Just Wait and See," "Radiating Love," "Boys Go Crazy," and "She Likes the Beat" were instant Knack classics, but with more skin and bone. "Lil' Cal's Big Mistake" could've been an unreleased Blood, Sweat & Tears track. "Africa" was Weather Report on pop-flavored steroids. "We Are Waiting" and "Sweet Dreams" sound like outtakes from the last John Lennon sessions (Douglas produced Double Fantasy). Two of the Knack's best tracks are here, and both are worth the price of admission alone. "Pay the Devil (Ooo, Baby, Ooo)" is a beautifully haunting ballad while "Another Lousy Day in Paradise" is the Knack's entire musical essence squeezed into one three-minute pop song. Brilliant. A few weeks after this brilliant album was released (to poor reviews, it should be said), the Knack split up. While they were at their creative high, they were at their commercial and critical low. Again, it must suck to be the Knack.

I will merely add that in FT Focus Group X, I ranked "12:51" behind only "Mandy"* -- that song alone makes me excited to hear if they can pull it all off for a third time.

* I must remind you that FG X is TOO CONTROVERSIAL -- likely due to the three known first-place votes for "Mandy" -- and has never seen the light of day.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

"12:51" is perfect. 40s and parties -- every bored new york kid's autobiography, right there. too bad this never became our "surrender"; instead of the boomer-swinger parents getting high and listening to kiss, in the strokes' teenage world the parents are hardly even in the picture!

Talk to me now I'm older
Your friend told you 'cause I told her
Friday nights have been lonely
Change your plans and then phone me.

We could go and get 40s
Fuck goin' to that party
Oh really, your folks are away now?
Alright, let's go, you convinced me.

12:51 is the time my voice
Found the words i sought...
Is it this stage I want?

The world is shutting out...for us.
We were tense for sure,
But we was confident...

Kiss me now that I'm older
I won't try to control you
Friday nights have been lonely
Take it slow but don't warn me

We'd go out and get 40s
Then we'd go to some party
Oh really, your folks are away now?
Alright I'm coming...

I'll be right there.

This album is just one of those perfect classics to me. An album I played to death in such a way that each surface of it feels so warm and familiar. The only album I can compare it to in my head is Yellow Swans At All Ends. Don't ask me to explain this because it makes sense somewhere.

classic material

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 14 August 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

Really I love how each track is a different shade of grey. Automatic Stop is so perfect, the whole lovers discourse is like a mathematical equation. In fact the guy writes oddly great lyrics sometimes, just a pile of non-sequiters that somehow add up to something much richer. I don't mind/ It's true.

just as classic as the first one

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

. . . and then there was Album No. 3.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 14 August 2008 02:11 (seventeen years ago)

i think julian's lyrics are pretty great on the first two, some lines are clunkers, but the 12:51 lyrics are unimpeachable imo, and "whatever happened", "reptilia", "under control" are nearly as great and the rest is pretty good. never got why people hated on his lyrics so much (i assume its cuz ppl just hated him), but as far as rock songs about relationships go he writes pretty well and pretty relatable.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

3rd one has some of their best songs ever, "you only live once" is at times my favorite song of theirs, and "razorblade" and "juicebox" are pretty good

the rest is uniformly average -> bad esp in julians writing, but mostly the hooks arent there esp when he's straining to sing. just seemed like a really clueless and lost album. solo on "ize of the world" is incredible though.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

i actually really like this album and i don't care who knows it

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

As I think I've said elsewhere here, they strike me as a band that completely burned out their sound by their second disc. OTOH, I just don't get the hype over them to begin with. Discs One -- Two are (to me, obv.) . . . okay to very nice.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 14 August 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

"automatic stop" and "under control" are both classic, and of course "12:51".. "Reptilia". "End Has No End"... great record.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I always thought automatic stop was awesome. Mainly coz of the guitar.

wilter, Thursday, 14 August 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

3rd album is really underrated to, has some great songs like "Ize of the World," "You Only Live Once," "Heart In A Cage".. they definitely stepped their musicianship up.. it's different but it's still good.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

oh and "killing lies," i always liked that one

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:04 (seventeen years ago)

"killing lies" is one of their worst songs imo (i think nick wrote this, its either that or "fear of sleep"), basically encapsulates my biggest problem about that album. the lyrics are beyond what is acceptable from julian even in the "i live in a city/but belong in a field" era, also he just really strains to sing the chorus and its just very ugh. the guitars are cool, reminds me of albert hammond solo stuff

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:08 (seventeen years ago)

julian just sounds awful though

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:08 (seventeen years ago)

the "you only live once" demo "ill try anything once" that was the heart in a cage single b-side and is just julian and a mellotron is incredible, really great wizened lounge singer vibe like "under control"

here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbHsJXqIKmY

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:11 (seventeen years ago)

both is this it? and room on fire are top 10-15 of the decade for me

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:14 (seventeen years ago)

they would both definitely be on my top 100 (room on fire top 50), in terms of rock albums i'd place "room on fire" just below yeah yeah yeahs -fever to tell and deerhoof - apple o.. and broadcast - tender buttons if you consider that rock that's #1

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:16 (seventeen years ago)

oh and the first two interpol records are good... and sonic youth murray street

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:17 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:19 (seventeen years ago)

fever to tell and mars volta - deloused in the comatorium were my two entry to rock albums

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

i listen to show your bones like once every 3/4 months, usually rummaging through my car, and i remember how awesome it is. i love the band they turned into, really looking forward to their next one

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

oh and kings of leon i think ¯\(°_o)/¯

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:21 (seventeen years ago)

I've never really given Show Yr Bones much play, I was really anticipating it at the time and I remember liking it okay, especially "Phenomenon" and "Way Out", but I was disappointed that the songs I heard them play live that I was addicted to weren't on it (most of those songs ended up on the IsIs EP)

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:23 (seventeen years ago)

yeah idk i was never much into their suczz-rock. show your bones is mostly just great taut pop songs w/ good use acoustic guitar. lots of really pretty moments, which is when theyre at their best (maps duh)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

i still think "y control" is their best song

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:28 (seventeen years ago)

2001-2003 era julian is possibly my biggest rockstar crush of all time

here is my high school livejournal avatar http://theresalduncan.typepad.com/witostaircase/images/juliancasablancas5jpgw300h382.jpg

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:29 (seventeen years ago)

i actually met him once

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:30 (seventeen years ago)

well maybe "met" is an overstatment, "saw" is more like it

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:31 (seventeen years ago)

haha there was a time in my life where i woulda had a 12 year old girl meets jonas bros style heart attack if i "saw" him

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

hahahaha

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

in high school a friend told me he had a ticket for me to see them during the room on fire tour then he sold me out ;_;

supposedly they sucked/almost broke up around that time, but if i saw them now (never seen them ;_; ;_; ;_;) it just wouldn't be the same

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah if I saw the mars volta now I would probably end up leaving within the first 10 minutes, but back in 2004 or so? OMG I would've died

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:36 (seventeen years ago)

going on a youtube binge right now

here is my favorite tv performance of theirs ever

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmtttmPmSvw

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

pre-youtube i used to download videos of them off limewire and it was all shit from letterman/conan/snl so i have an encyclopedic knowledge of their tv performances and which make up lots of my visual memories of them

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:39 (seventeen years ago)

lol it's the best when you're really geeked about an artist and watch all of their performances, videos, etc. I used to tape all of the performances and red carpet interviews of my fave artists back in the day

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:45 (seventeen years ago)

haha otm

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:47 (seventeen years ago)

like I still have the tapes of christina aguilera circa-stripped when she thought she was black and had an awful spray on tan

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:49 (seventeen years ago)

ha i think i still have a trove of limewire vids that can only play on windows media player on my computer in my old bedroom, i should look through them tomorrow

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

strokes lyrics that made up the bulk of my aim profile in high school at various points/secretly wanted tattooed on me:

"when we was young
oh, man did we have fun"

(^still love this one)

"you aint got nothin i wanted but
i want it all, i just can't...figure out"

"kiss me now that im older
i wont try and control ya"

"you're no longer laughing
im not drowning fast enough"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

speaking of christina aguilera and the strokes:

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

yup

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

have you been geeking over any artists lately? my jazmine sullivan obsession is getting to that point, I spent all day listening to her, doing google blogsearches for new news, and watching live performances on youtube lol

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeah los campesinos! obsession is reaching levels of fandom i haven't reached lil wayne last year (approaching strokes era, which is crazy cuz i was aware of way less music back then). spent the past view days watching webcasted shows and radio performances etc. scrolling through flickr. very innocent and primal stuff, but its the best place to be w/ music

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

reached since lil wayne*

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

haven't heard of them will check em out

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:12 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah geeky obsession is the best.. it seems like the more you get into music the less often it happens

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:13 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

love this album, when I was fifteen I was certain that one day I'd move to NYC and be best friends with the Strokes.

Are The Strokes still a band?

makeitpop, Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

they are less a band than an ideology. cells have sprung up all over the world.

Local Garda, Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

You're not kidding. There was a guy I knew towards the end of high school who seemed to make being the 6th member of the Strokes a life mission. We lived in LA, and so moving to New York was, for him, some sort of necessary migration.

Cunga, Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

they probably wouldn't notice

Tá a fhios agam, nach bhfuil? (I know, right?), Saturday, 6 December 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

seven years pass...

Sitting in a bar, and "Reptilia" comes on--Damn that one smokes.

this is the one i loved the most the last time i played this, which was saturday. it changes every time.

Treeship, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 03:47 (nine years ago)

Am now remembering how strangely hard it was for me to land a CD of this album the week it dropped. My local Best Buy and Circuit City for reason didn't get it right away, so I had to go to either Target or Borders--I forget which. Ate up my whole afternoon.

Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 03:53 (nine years ago)

ah, I haven't listened to them in a long time but yeah, I guess this might be their best (the hits on the first one may be better but this one is a bit more varied if I remember correctly).
Also it was so long ago... they will soon get to the stage of the reunion tour/20y reedition/etc !
