John Lennon, for the "A Hard Day's Night" album alone.

Although McCartney was the real genius during the later part of The Beatles' career. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

A hard day's night was an awesome film (i'm only 14 and i know quite a lot about music :)

Clearly not; after all, you like Nirvana.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They both had a direct, emotionally affecting style that spoke powerfully to a lot of listeners. The length of Lennon's career may tip the scales in his favor.

But who's cuter?

caitlin, i didn't want to be the first to tell you this, but as far as musical knowledge goes, you're out of your league. this doesnt mean that your taste is inferior. it's your taste after all, and more power to you for standing up for what you love, but some of these guys know how many people were at robert fripp's 4th birthday party.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin....there's nothing inherently wrong with having a favorite band. Lord knows I have one. But, by the same token, you don't hear me going around telling people that Killing Joke invented the wheel (though a little known fact is that they built the first airplane and perfected the steam engine,...but I digress). Nirvana were a fine little band, but to assert that they're "the best band in the world" is to make a statement that is positively BEGGING for furiously nasty rebuttal.

Secondly, I beg of you: DON't become one of those tragic graveside groupies, perpetually eulogizing a sad little man who took his own life, selfishly leaving a wife and child behind. If you do have any respect for the man, you should realize that he's probably shuddering somehwere in abject repulsion at the thought of leagues of zombified zealots holding him up like some sort've deity.

You're the one that threw in the "fuck you," m'dear, not me.

nirvana means a lot to me as you already know...

Yes, I believe that's been well established by now.

i don't like hearing stuff like this...

Caitlin, think of it as a way of fortifying your resolve. Not everyone is going to agree with you when you make certain statements. Instead of clamping your hands on your ears, let different opinions filter your impressions. For example, if someone says "Nirvana sucks a big bag of dicks," find out what THEY like and judge for yourself. There were a lot of vaccuous whistleheads here who took potshots at bands I love, but when I dug a little deeper and discovered that those spiteful individuals were fans of indefensibly insipid pabulum like, say, Destiny's Child, Shania Twain and Good Charlotte, I realized: "Hey, if they're willing to smear the sonic dung that is Beyonce Knowle's artless bleating all over their ears, what the fuck do THEY know in the first place?"

Like what you like and defend it accordingly, but don't expect everyone else to agree with you or understand why you feel the way you do about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll probably get a "fuck you" for this as well, but Caitlin, you might do well to develop your ability to handle folks with different musical opinions than yours. -- if they're being obnoxious or just baiting you, learn to dismiss/ignore them. If they're speaking from a different perspective (eg: someone who doesn't like rock music at all, for instance), perhaps you can learn something from them, even if only how other people think about particular music that you're into.

This from a man who has six Yoko Ono CDs and speaks with the voice of experience.

(x-post with Alex -- we agree about a lot of things, I've noticed).

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 28 August 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is mean spirited. After the DMB thread, it seems obvious that some ILMers enjoy "shooting butterflies". Why?

Caitlin can think Nirvana were the greatest band evah. Why's that offend these so-called adults? People getting offended by opinions, whether they're held by a 14 year old girl or by Robert Xgau, are dud. Is dud. Whatever. Just seems pointless.

A pointlessness I just added to.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin, don't apologize, yer cool. It's even better to see someone who is trashing a lot of presupposed expectations! Here's my only advice on what it means to be a good listener:

* What matters most is what you like. Nobody else makes your musical decisions for ya.

* All musicians are humans too -- some good, some bad, most a mix. Never confuse somebody's art with someone as a person unless you know them directly and can judge.

* Always allow for the fact that you can change your mind -- which it seems like you already have! There will always be new discoveries to make. :-)

I figure with that, that's all you need. And welcome. :-)

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin -- I for one have loved the music of both of these guys. (As surely've done lots & lots of other ilmers, I'm certain). A lot. At different times. And I've also seen how my son - ten years old at the time KC shot himself, and not even born when JL was murdered - took to Nirvana's music -- gradually. And then at some point, to my utter bafflement, he seemed to feel'n'decide - or so, at least, i saw it - that 'this music belonged' to him rather than me. Which meant, among other things, that subsequently he began to handle my Nirvana cassettes and cd's as if those were his own (lending them out, exchanging for other stuff, etc-etc-etc what-not). And I'm still mighty baffled by all that, actually.
Which is not much of a reply to your Cobain vs Lennon query -- I really won't 'take sides' on this, for I see no point -- but might explain, somewhat, my helter-skelter posts to this thread.

Also, there's no need for you to be 'sorry' about anything on this thread really, I don't think.

(And the Ono vs Love conundrum has been exercised many time over, hasn't it not?)

((Oh fakkah, I've been trying to get my mail thru for at least six time now))

(((Oh no...)))

...and I've no love lost for Julian L!

Bend it like Jeff Beck.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 28 August 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The ex-Real Madrid defender first signed for the Trotters in August 2002 on a one-year loan deal.

Having played 34 games he proved to be a vital part of Allardyce's Premiership side that escaped relegation with just one game to go.

At the end of the 2002/03 campaign his contract expired, much to the sadness of everyone down at the Reebok. There was a general feeling that in many ways Campo would be irreplaceable, with Allardyce's transfer budget being so limited.

However, after leaving the North West, Campo decided it was far nicer than the Spanish city of Madrid and in July 2003 returned to sign a 3-year contract with the Wanderers.

Upon completion of the deal, Manager Alardyce said: "Both parties have reached an agreement and we are happy to have agreed Ivan's services for the next three years.

"He was a key figure for us last season and will be vital for us next season."

The Spanish international has a wealth of experience and has played with 6 different clubs over the course of his career, with Valencia and Real Madrid being amongst them. Last season he was praised by his manager as being 'a good all-round defender'. He is very strong, very quick and good in the air.'

The re-signing of Campo was a real coup for Allardyce, who had struggled to line up a replacement since the Spaniard left the club. He adds experience and ability to Bolton's continental side and has received much admiration from the Bolton players and fans alike.

He will be hoping his contributions are good enough to keep the club in the Premiership for the duration of his 3-year contract and if he shows the form he did last season, relegation will be through no fault of his own.

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally, does anyone else get creeped out at that "Light Your Ass on Fire" song? I don't know why, but it makes me think ol' Busta's got a case of the gonorrhea.

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahaha

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(well, wot does one say to a fourteen-year-old who's laughing at gonorrhea?)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

don't laugh. And don't forget the jimmy hat. Unless you want us to laugh at YOU.

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

or "take it from me, hstencil, V.D.'s are bad. Don't get them on tour."

God bless you, hstencil, you'll make a good parent one day.

And yes, it's okay you keep the matches. Just don't give them to Alex, alrighty?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

but how's he gonna honor the fire, then?

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex's a big boy, he can travel to Iceland all by himself. There, he'll find what he's looking for. The honour and the fire, and what not.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed, Alex is much like Bono in that he still hasn't found what he's looking for.

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

And who woulda thunk it could come down to this? Hstencil and me, together - well, almost, not quite - dishonouring the fire, as it might appear?

*scurries away, afeared pissless, to order custom-made diamond-studded lighter for Alex in NYC*

*ignores - almost, but not quite - hstencil shouting 'chickenshit!' behind his back*

*changes course shortly, goes and orders a fire extinguisher instead*
