Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna still pushing the lame duck "Hollywood" track. Ugh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The opening was good for bombast, not much else.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone looked kind of confused about the whole thing.

And there was kissing.

d k (d k), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Xtina brush her didjits across Madge's undercarriage?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, hd to make the obvious joke.

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't see how Aguilera + Madonna + Britney can't be anything but anti-climactic at this point. It doesn't even have the resonance of Brandy + Monica.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

When are they gonna allow men to make out? Like say an Eminem + Justin + Jack White 3 way?

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Good to see Em taking the jibes in stride for a change.

Putting a parade of morons on live TV will get me sucked in every time.

roger adultery, Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Missy should get the award for putting that freaky white girl in the video alone.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Missy coming off like a moron

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim is, like, stooooooned.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Lebron has the charisma and acting chops of a young Ghhheorghhhe Muresan!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

GOD BLESS CHRIS ROCK!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Beyonce

fred91577: will she thank jesus?
Epicharmus: Nope.
fred91577: wow, she really has outgrown the lord.
Epicharmus: SHE'S BIGGER THAN JESUS!
fred91577: she can get jesus to intercede for you!
fred91577: she doesn't need his blessing! WE DO.
Epicharmus: Just look! She's got earrings the size of Miami! Of course she's bigger than Jesus.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Lady Evanescence strikingly pastey!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

fred91577: evanescence and sean paul. INSPIRED!
fred91577: culture clash!
Epicharmus: Quirky!
fred91577: IRIE!
Epicharmus: They challenge preconceptions I didn't know I had!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What? No Moby apology from Eminem?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Whole lotta commercials.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

aww god i feel so damn bad for johnny cash...:'(

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Nelly's pal is an idiot. So is Nelly, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez, Johnny Cash is going to be Tony Bennett redux. Or something.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the fact that I have no idea what the fuck they're talking about.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

This is gonna be another useless medley, right?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Christina looks like Medusa.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The kindest thing I can say is that at least she's not lip-synching....oh jeez, et tu Navarro?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, why else is she singing "Dirrty," which is sooo old now?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Epicharmus: You know, maybe MTV never really understood youth culture in the first place.
fred91577: i can't remember. i was too young at the time.
Epicharmus: I was there at the birth of the universe, Fred.
fred91577: was it like they say?
fred91577: was there a big bang and all?
Epicharmus: The face of Simon Le Bon shone like a million suns, Fred.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Navarro is such a guita-whore

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy crap, I just said the exact thing to Fred, Alex.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Outkast + Iggy Pop

Epicharmus: This works because we love them.
fred91577: exactly what i was going to say.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 28 August 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Davey Havoc has such a strange looking head.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

who is AFI? they are the least convincing rock stars ever

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: David Spade + Olsen Twins

Epicharmus: C'mon just fuck them or something, GOD!
fred91577: now THAT would be something.
fred91577: that's water cooler material.
Epicharmus: You thought Michael and Lisa Marie kissing was gross? Well...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Justin gonna say something about the Sasha Frere-Jones essay?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

fred91577: (uncomfortable silence)
Epicharmus: God, that was SAD.
Epicharmus: I mean, sad in a good way.
Epicharmus: Run looked like he was about to cry and DMC looked like he was seething with some non-specific rage about how fucked the situation was.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna get on the VMA"s when im in a band...everyone remember my name

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

id love to just screw around with the people in the back. mess with there heads...like all the producers and stuff...kinda like what Nirvana did at the 93 VMA's they started playing rape me when the producers and stuff told them they couldn't. so after the first verse of rape me they changed to lithium hahaha

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

That Run DMC / Diddy shit was awkward

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the hell is Lil John?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hilary Duff looked terrified of him.

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

wow.....this is slightly disturbing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Eminem, anger management and puppets

Epicharmus: Oh, this is gonna be a stupid joke, inn't?
Epicharmus: Yeah, I thought so.
fred91577: i thought he was just going to introduce 50.
fred91577: i thought that was his little brother.
Epicharmus: D'OH!
Epicharmus: Kill him.
fred91577: look at all of that ink!
fred91577: rape it!
Epicharmus: FRED!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Breastsapalooza

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

fred91577: i don't understand 50 cent.
fred91577: that was probably chris rock's most incisive commentary.
Epicharmus: I just can't get past the way he says "clllluuueeeb."
fred91577: REMIX!
Epicharmus: He's shockingly uncharasmatic.
fred91577: he's too laid back.
fred91577: and not in a good snoop dogg way.
Epicharmus: Speaking of which... in comes Snoop
fred91577: maybe if he wore more purple...
Epicharmus: Using snoop as a distraction: classic or dud?
Epicharmus: He could ask Outkast for some.
fred91577: classic.
fred91577: classic until he shows up in a justin timberlake video.
Epicharmus: Or Justin appears in a 50 cent video.
fred91577: this is the most elaborate bathroom break i've ever seen.
fred91577: at least g-unit shout and stuff.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like death without the worms.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce's showing an awful lot of sternum.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus snubbed in second Beyonce speech shocker!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how the fab five all mobbed Beyonce when she came on-stage.

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: The *Queer Eye for the Straight Guy* men, Jimmy Fallon and Beyonce.

Epicharmus: Oh, it's gay people, which means I'M SUPPOSED TO LIKE THEM.
Epicharmus: I've never seen this show.
fred91577: oh, i love it.
fred91577: but i am a metrosexual.
Epicharmus: Oh, you wish.
fred91577: ted's not wearing his glasses, which disappoints me.
Epicharmus: Is Beyonce out of her mind yet? Because she can't be a true diva until she's nuts.
fred91577: j. lo had won, but then they, um, recounted.
fred91577: wait until she finds jay-z in bed with another man.
fred91577: then she'll go crawling back to jesus.
Epicharmus: What is this about her rejecting Jesus, anyway? Is she now all about the Buddha?
fred91577: "get these gays off me! don't i get enough of this at home!"
fred91577: jay-z didn't want to appear on stage. he didn't want to feed the flame.
fred91577: (meep.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

woooo

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

linkin park won for best rock'n'roll? I'm going to set my hair on fire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't set your hair on fire. Set someone else's hair on fire.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary J. Blige.....do people really get excited about this stuff?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

She's hopping around like a garishly-painted stripper/bullfrog hybrid.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I love her, but she's no live act.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Truthfully, I know zilch about her, so don't listen to me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

goddamnit why didn't metallica win for best rock?!!? Linkin Park!?!?! what the fuck!?!?!?!?

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The Duran/Kelly/Avril matchup is strikingly awkward.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Avril looks bored shitless. Think she'll refer to them as "Duron Duron"?

Simon LeBon talks just like Ali G

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelly Osbourne's making vintage Courtney seem dignified.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The poor Durans look very lost.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Duran Duran get an award or something, but technical difficulties get in the way. Avril and Kelly Osbourne look on.

Epicharmus: WHU?!?!?
fred91577: i bet duran duran stopped being famous before either of these two were BORN.
fred91577: avril's hatred is unspoken.
Epicharmus: This better not be the fucking sum total of their appearance?
fred91577: when do they get their video vanguard award?
Epicharmus: CATFIGHT!
Epicharmus: LAME LAME LAME.
fred91577: I CAN'T BEAR IT
fred91577: they needed a caption that said "THIS IS A DURAN DURAN VIDEO."
fred91577: "AND THIS IS DURAN DURAN."
fred91577: "APPLAUSE."
fred91577: god, that went off worse than the michael jackson thing.
Epicharmus: That was not spontaneous.
fred91577: i think they actually pulled those awards out of their pockets.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

fred91577: justin really annoys me as of late.
fred91577: shot of him reverently applauding duran duran.
fred91577: introducing coldplay.
fred91577: playing with the flaming lips.
fred91577: he's gotta have a handbook.
Epicharmus: He's practicing to be an elder rock statesman!
fred91577: he's taking the torch! from simon!
fred91577: "DURAN DURAN Y'ALL"
fred91577: go make your electroclash record already and be done with it.
fred91577: what about the christ child?!
fred91577: this might be the most awkward vma on record.
fred91577: two hours in, most memorable moment?
Epicharmus: Run DMC's awkward moment.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

this year of the VMA's fucking suck

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Best moment in this show = Chris Rock's commentary on Good Charlotte.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

When did Justin Timberlake become Nipsy Russell?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"I hope you didn't slit your wrists to that one"

Ouch.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Williams Sisters as dull & dim as Olsen Twins.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin wins the Best Male Video award

Epicharmus: What must Britney think of all this Justinmania?
fred91577: we saw what justin made of britney making out with madonna!
fred91577: see, this is what cash gets for falling ill and cancelling on mtv.
fred91577: jt gets it instead!
Epicharmus: Justin is gonna mention Cash though, I bet.
fred91577: hahahahahahahahahaha
fred91577: "he's mad dope, y'all"
fred91577: yup here we go
fred91577: BUT
fred91577: my man j. cash
Epicharmus: HA! TOLD YA!
fred91577: holy shit.
fred91577: KILL ME
fred91577: or bettter: DIE NOW TIMBERLAKE
fred91577: when i was knee high to a cricket
Epicharmus: Holy crap. Justin, you do NOT want this burden!
fred91577: my grandpappy rocked me in the cradle
fred91577: and played me a song
fred91577: about shooting a man in reno and watching him die.
fred91577: CHANGED MY LIFE.
Epicharmus: So what 'unlikely' rockcrit fave has he not given a shout out to yet?
fred91577: "HEY Y'ALL. 'MARQUEE MOON' IS THE BOMDIGGY"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaah

Krist Novoselic hit his head with his intrument in 92 :) the answer to that question they asked

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY Y'ALL. 'MARQUEE MOON' IS THE BOMDIGGY"

Hahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So Justin is the same as the character in the Ray Bradbury short story about the Martian who adapts himself to whatever his audience/surroundings are? But this is good, because he eventually turns into bubbling grue and all who invested in him go home sad. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin knows exactly what he's doing, man. He's playing it right as rain

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

He was always a wank-fantasy for a presumed teen pop/hip-hop crossover bottomless critical cornucopia, so him being aware of that I wouldn't put past when it came to a Robbie Williams 'I am all things to all people' status, hm...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

So much yawnsome "my new album comes out...." promotion nonsense.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

SOMEONE KILL THAT FUCKIN' CHESTER CHARACTER!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how Beyonce's not even trying to convince you that she's actually singing by jettisoning the whole "i'm holding a microphone" shtick entirely.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ill kill him!!!

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

damn i was kind of hoping Beyonce would fall from that thing she was on :-\

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fred91577: pharrell is quickly becoming as unbearable as jt.
Epicharmus: The guy from Linkin Park gave a shout out to Pete Yorn! Arrrrgggh!
fred91577: for when he's "chillin"
fred91577: his name is chester bennington.
fred91577: there's probably a "iii" in there somewhere.
Epicharmus: Oh! Ow! Awkward!
Epicharmus: She's being fondled by mines!
fred91577: hey, it's racquel welch in 2000 BC
Epicharmus: Big menacing mimes!
fred91577: or is that jane fonda in barbarella?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

whats with all these goddamn commericals

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck a Nun, Good Charlotte just won the Viewer's Choice award. All hope is lost.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I'm going to try to be calm here.

I just read on a Duran forum that they were given a Lifetime Achievement Award, something which I have been seriously gunning for them to get for, well, about seven or eight years or so. And that it was totally an unplanned surprise-type thing.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED IT! AND I CAN'T BELIEVE (from what I've been reading) THAT THEY COMPLETELY FUCKED IT UP!!!!! No wait, this is MTV we're talking about, of COURSE I should believe that everything was totally and completely screwed up. Fucking bunch of idiot savants, and that's just for the clueless audience (I read the description of the apparently lackluster reaction).

But damn, it must be like 50,000 degrees below zero in Hades now. MTV actually gave DD some props. Wow. I hope the people at the MTV news department had their hair completely fall off from shock now. *laugh*

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

god i hate them

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

SOMEONE FUCKING SHOOT ME

Deanna, when you finally do see it, you'll invariably punch the screen and lacerate your knuckles in a variety of disquietingly bloody ways. It's that awkward.

Duran Duran, by the way, were a thousand times more inventive than Nirvana.

Ugh. I am seriously considering not looking at it, really. I really don't want to sit through the whole ceremony just to watch this bit, anyway, even if they DID do a good job. But damn, my favorite band were actually on MTV and I'm not used to that and they just got something that I'd been wanting them to get for many years. Damn.

Duran Duran, by the way, were a thousand times more inventive than Nirvana.

Hmmm. You know, you do have a point here. I mean, DD combined Chic, the Sex Pistols, David Bowie, and Roxy Music, and did it all in a group where the bassist and the guitarist found a shared love for Gary Moore and Johnny Thunders and the keyboardist was wild about the Talking Heads. It's a huge amalgam of stuff. But heck, Kurt Cobain was a Duran fan and the band did perform a Duran cover in their live shows.

Oh yes, and this is the thread I was looking at:

Epicharmus: Oh christ. Not a cover medley!
fred91577: uh oh.
fred91577: "i was booooorrrrrrrnnnnnnnuhhhhhhh"
Epicharmus: "Video Killed the Radio Star" is gonna be part of this, right?
fred91577: white stripes, woo!
Epicharmus: Oh christ.
fred91577: they defined the video generation!
fred91577: it sounds goth now!
Epicharmus: I will fucking kick their ass if they defined anything!
fred91577: when will they do "jump"?
Epicharmus: well, we got "beat it."
fred91577: i bet eminem comes on for a rawkin version of "lose yourself"
Epicharmus: What head case thought this was a good idea?
fred91577: james hetfield's talent has been underutilized thus far.
Epicharmus: Whee! Five or six songs without words! Whee!
Epicharmus: Wow, if I was MTV I'd feel so touched and pleased.
fred91577: they're trying to make recompense for the p.r. disaster that was lars vs. napster.
Epicharmus: Not even!
fred91577: "we will do your little medley, if you let us promote our crappy new record."
fred91577: oh, the back alley deals that must go on at mtv.
fred91577: james sounds like a wimp.
fred91577: WHERE'S AXL?
Epicharmus: He's in his hotel room in Las Vegas, laying in the fetal position on his waterbed.

Random late-breaking throughts

Metallica needs to finish waht they start.

Beyonce was dancing/writhing with the guys from the Justify My Love video (cf. "Look at the unit on they guy")

Queer Eye + Jimmy Fallon was horrifyingly non progressive.

Cash won award for cinematography. Was announced at the pre-sho.

Along those lines, if jt is going to give props to jc, as the kids like to say, the usual gesture is to leave the award/prize and not take it with you...

Good Charloette look like the Misfits, as imagined by people who hear about what the Misfits look like, but have never seen any real pictures of them. cf. Allegory of the Cave.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 29 August 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Metallica covers were terrible.

Chris Rock was good, but not as good as he has been in the past. His segues were all really awkward. But the Good Charlotte thing totally redeemed him.

Also, I have decided, since Good Charlotte, if you destroy your instruments, you are officially not Rock N Roll.

They need to cut the VMAs in half, and wayyyy less time for commercial breaks. I turned off my TV during one break, made a sandwich, went outside for a bit, came back, and they had just gone back to the show.

David Allen, Friday, 29 August 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

fred durst was the only person to take one of chris rock's jokes poorly--he gave rock the finger as he went onstage to give an award. he also seemed disinterested in the award-giving repartee with jack black. he reminds me of that surly kid in 8th grade who thinks he's cool because he won't play along in theater class, but who puts a fair amount of effort into making that impression. i mean, if he has such contempt for the entire artifice of the awards show, and can't take any ribbing, why does he show up?

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

also why in good charlotte's song where they whine about other celebrities whining, are the only people they identify by name black: johnny cochran and marion barry? i'm suspicious.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the funny thing: they only mention black people, but the jokes they tell were stolen FROM a black guy...Chris Rock (from his "Bring The Pain" special)! The song was allegedly inspired by Axl Rose, who they adored but was bitching in Rolling Stone once. They probably should have specifically namechecked him in the lyrics so people wouldn't search for yet another nonmusical reason to disapprove of them.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, if he has such contempt for the entire artifice of the awards show, and can't take any ribbing, why does he show up?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The closest we got was Bar Band Extraordinaire riffing on their nominated song for like 10 seconds...WEAK.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

out of curiousity, what was the joke made?

I must admit that I wonder what the point of Chris Rock mocking the parade of bullshit while arguably LEADING it is. It's like people who hate TV but spend all their time watching it and mocking it. He makes some great cracks (I think his calling Ricky Martin "The Puerto Rican Al B. Sure!" was more inspired than his "mediocre Green Day" line or his "Fatboy Slim? More like White Boy Retarded!" ones. He really should have called Good Charlotte out on stealing his jokes) but the whole enterprise seems really masochistic.

Much like this thread!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

my question was about the joke made to Fred Durst that inspired the middle finger (and why shouldn't someone make a comeback to one of Chris Rock's barbs? I think people look stupider when they don't even acknowledge the guy just ripped on you).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Fred just give the finger out arbitrarily? I didn't realize it was directed at Rock at the time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that was the only finger he had?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Tweet's album not perform that well or something?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It did not do well at all, which is mystifing when you consider the inexplicable rise of the personality-free void that is Ashanti.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

But "Oops Oh My" contained a DEVO SAMPLE!!!! I almost bought it `coz of that!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You should have bought it, Alex!

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It was entirely appropriate for Missy to bring out and thank Tweet, seeing as how she brought out and thanked every other person who was involved in that video in any way, and Tweet gave that video one of the sexiest TV moments of the year in her two-second appearance (the "get your hair did" part).

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ashanti TOTALLY has more personality, or at least interest to her fanbase. Her whole niche is the sweet girl that loves to be assaulted by thugs. Many of her hits have lyrics about whether you can control her or thug her and stuff. Tweet only got the zeitgeist on one song and Missy outshadowed her on it in a way Ja Rule isn't capable of doing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim Dero: "Musically, the only genuine highlight was a short but beautiful live performance by England's Coldplay, who won best group and breakthrough video, and whom no less an authority than Justin Timberlake (winner of the best dance, best pop and best male videos) called "the greatest band in the world."

I seriously cannot understand the critical panting over such a tall gulp of weak tea as Coldplay, esp. Coldplay live.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ashanti is the hiphop Lesley Gore, and not in an interesting way.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay-hawking is just some of the usual least-of-the-evils hype. Critics like Dero have to adore the most indie-white-aesthetic-respectin' group there. They always have.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

My head's about to blast apart like the fiery Phoenix effect. Anthony, are you sticking up for Ashanti????

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ashanti is the hiphop Lesley Gore, and not in an interesting way.

No, she's the hiphop Olivia Newton-John, and not in an interesting way...think early ON-J, country ON-J.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I only like a couple Ashanti songs (mainly "Happy" which is pretty psychedelic), and I DESPISE Ja Rule. I'm just saying why her success isn't as baffling as people making it seem and why Tweet hasn't had similar success.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Strongo, do your parents know you're messing with the computer again? Shouldn't you be off watching "Teletubbies" or something?

Ashanti couldn't have less personality if she tried. Her voice is as bland as margarine.

Tweet, by contrast, has at least a little more style.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll never notice Tweet's style as long as she keeps hanging around Missy, who I'd refer to as a metaphorical 300-pound gorilla if that didn't seem in HORRIBLY poor taste.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ya heard one breathy R'n'B diva, ya heard'em all, but at least Tweet's production (by way of Timbaland) is a lot more inventive and interesting (Devo samples or not) than the sickly studio syrup that Irv Gotti Jackson-Pollacks all over Ashanti's lifeless warbling.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we refer to her as an 800-stone Go-rilla? No one knows what a stone is anymore...

ModJ, Friday, 29 August 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and I almost forgot, her name is TWEET. That can get in the way of people wanting to identify with you. And Irv's production doesn't distract from the singer so much. Timba's expectably-inventive production makes Tweet more anonymous.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Cher may not be as good as the Brides Of Funkenstein, but she's sure as hell more memorable.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

chris rock said that rap-metal and fred durst were proof of the effectiveness of hip-hop's affirmative action policy for white people. durst plainly gave rock the finger as he walked onstage. the joke was pretty gentle compared to the ones at, say, r. kelly's expense.

rock wasn't very good, by his standards, but then the whole awards show seems to be about making the best of a general atmosphere of strained mediocrity. the lines that awards presenters are given have to be pretty tame, since most singers aren't capable of particularly complex comic timing. but the pretense that they are actually behind the lines, that they are delivering them in earnest, was frequently dropped, which saddens me. these shows are all about artifice, the idea that by goofing off or being indifferent you are exposing some evil machine or something.... to continue the anology i started upthread, it's like a school play. sure, it may be cheesy, but if everyone is too cool to lay any of themselves on the line for it, the whole thing falls down and who benefits from that?

again re. rock: mtv's thing is poking fun at itself, or celebrating itself, or otherwise neutral navel-gazing. it's exhausting, esp. around awards-show time.

i have no ethical objection to lip synching, just an aesthetic one. the whole novelty of beyonce performing at a show is that we actually get to see her show off her chops (and she does have chops, unlike some whose vocal weaknesses are revealed in live performances). lip synching means all she gets to show off are...well i'll leave the rest of that sentence for the calums of the world. she's a fantastic dancer, sure, but the choreography last night was kind of weak. sort of busy berkeley on ritalin.

finally, can someone convince me to think anything of mary j blige. she is constantly cited for being a survivor, although i've never heard her troubles more than just alluded to, i'll take it on faith that they were there. but her big songs seem so weak, and she makes up for it with ineffective showboating. i also find her bearing, her stage presence, kind of off-putting. she jumps around and stomps too much, she makes it look difficult when the job seems to call for the opposite.

my $0.02+

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

she makes it look difficult when the job seems to call for the opposite.

this sums up the problem with most dancing, showmanship these days. Instead of beauty, spontaneity and natural charm we're supposed to admire effort and obvious calculation.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I don't mind calculation as long as it's joyful and enthusiastic.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

mary j blige peforms as though it's some kind of hurculean effort just to sing, and we can breathe a sigh of relief after she finishes every verse. her stomps and bends and jumps are like the warm-up exercises of an olympic swimmer or something.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

miccio i enjoy agreeing with people and i agree with you here but there's a big neon sign in my cortex that reads, "good charlotte wtf?!?!"

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

supposed to admire effort and obvious calculation.

yeah, but good dancing should look effortless (ie. aguilera (the only part of the vma's i saw) has it completely wrong)(at least she's consistent in that her dancing/clothes/attitude/singing are all over the top)

good dancing SHOULD look effortless (I would expect Disco Stu to reaffirm this), and rarely does on MTV. Jennifer Lopez is a perfect example. Her style, like much of the post-Flashdance stuff, is more like aerobics than dancing.

The trick for getting Good Charlotte is to just listen (not see, listen) to the ALBUM as pop and stopping worrying about all the punk-or-not bullshit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think there's a single prescription for good dancing. i think good dancing can look effort-ful complete with grunts and pauses for breath. but mary j blige doesn't even quite dance, really...it's more like she is just finding ways to express the extraordinary powers of will she must summon to sing....

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

miccio since when do i care about something being punk, or even rock? i think their songs are horrible, their vocals horrible, their lyrics horrible, their arrangements pedestrian.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and i don't think you're even doing them much credit encouraging us to disassociate the visual presentation from the music, when they obv put so much effort into the former.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

then we don't agree on what qualifies as good vocals, lyrics, and arrangements. Woop-de-woop. I just see people including yourself post a lot more about the nonmusical faults people find in GC than about their music, which usally gets an evocative term like "bad" when people describe it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

they don't put nearly as much effort into their visuals as, say, Missy Elliott, and yet somehow people can discuss her music without saying "SHE USES KIDS AS DANCERS! EGAD!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

the only nonmusical aspect of g.c. i've posted about is the lead singer's horrifying habit of waving his arms constantly in videos.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't find missy's videos at all objectionable, sometimes i quite like them. i also like her sense of style. it is consonant with her music, just as i find g.c.'s sense of style consonant with *their* music.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and just in case I get blamed for derailing this thread, I never bring up Good Charlotte or Limp Bizkit. Usually I'm talking about something else and somebody says "oh whatever you like Limp Bizkit/Good Charlotte." One can only ignore the haters so much.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i think good dancing can look effort-ful complete with

i agree, but the effort-ful dancing i dislike is purely stylistic excess.

haha anthony...

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

just listen (not see, listen) to the ALBUM as pop

But as such it's stinky.

The whole Tweet/Ashanti sidetrack bemuses me. Tweet's name IS sorta 'eh?'

Like an MTV Accountancy Video Show? Hey, not a bad idea :)

True Life: I'm a Math Major

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(but then again i guess it wouldn't be mtv without stylistic excess)

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My problem with the VMA's brand of heavily-scripted spontaneity is that when it goes awry (and since it's live TV, stuff WILL go awry), it always seems more pathetic and embarrassing than when things go awry during more staid affairs like, say, the Oscars.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not excess per se, it's lack of facility + imagination. if you have a bunch of long-legged dancers in matching outfits, find something for them to do besides line up and do little dips.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd probably argue the WORST act I've seen at the MTV music awards dancewise has been TLC. Easily the most stitled and emotionless move-busting I've seen. Best is probably that giant tribute to Biggie deal Puffy did. One dancer practically did a ten foot jump and Sting, who Puffy totally made his BITCH, was forced to stand perfectly still. It's a sad sad thing when Puffy seems to have more genuine expressive dancing than everybody else at a show.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait, the best dancing ever was that Tatu thing at the movie awards last year. Either that or the Spike Jonze/Fatboy Slim ensemble.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sting, who Puffy totally made his BITCH, was forced to stand perfectly still.

Ever see Sting dance? Believe you me, him standing still was No accident.

Also, Sting doesn't need to dance.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

why didn't they have mya dance? she's a trained dancer, you know.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

haha reminds me of that part in the jewel video where it's obvious she can't dance well b/c they have her sort of bounce around while the professionals dance *around* her.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Mya at least looks good dancing, unlike, say, Beyonce, who looks like she's always about to topple over like a wobbly wedding cake.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

my god, Alex, please tell me your statement about the unnecessaryness of Sting dancing was based on his astounding artistic glory. Please.

Beyonce looks good dancing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i just wish they could have her dance in such a way so she would still be able to sing live. she seemed so consumed by her dance routine that she couldn't even lip synch properly.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce looks ridiculous dancing.

Anthony, go watch the video for "Don't Stand So Close To Me" (not the `86 remix) and tell me if you think Sting's giving Twyla Tharp a run for her money.

Morever, Sting didn't make his name as one of these all-singin'/all-dancin' types. He sings. That's what he does. You want juggling? Go watch clowns.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

and rather watch him play fifth banana in a Puff Daddy EXTRAVAGANZA with an uncomfortable look on his face, thank you very much.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

typo. I'd, not and.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You may, but your impression that Puffy somehow reduced him to some sort've pasty eunuch in that performance baffles me. If anything, I'd say Sting was doin' the man a favor....and it leant an air of legitimacy, credibility and genuine sympathy. I'd go so far as to say it was a classy move on Sting's part.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's compromise: Sting was doing a favor for Puffy by being his pasty eunuch. He totally didn't have to do it, but he was classy enough to provide an air of legitimacy, credibility and genuine sympathy as Puffy's bitch.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

classy or crassy?

hstencil, Friday, 29 August 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

does p. diddy owe him a living?

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

does notorious b.i.g.'s senseless death owe p. diddy to write a crappy song about it?

hstencil, Friday, 29 August 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

beyonce's hair extensions = performance of the night.

i hope jessica simpson gets that 'the price is right' gig she was auditioning for during the commercial breaks.

maura (maura), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Sting doesn't need to dance.

No, he needs to retire.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(stence that was a crass joke.)

i like how nick + jessica were banished to the outdoors for the night, where their self-promotion could appear all the more brazen and shameless.
