so apparently i'm supposed to be getting some of the new album soon (don't know how many tracks.) has anyone heard anything about it yet?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have now!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the news was kind of out of the blue; i hadn't even known they were working on anything.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I had heard they scrapped the album they were working on and reconvening next year to start afresh. So who knows whats really happening.

Rod, Friday, 29 August 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a blurb about it in the August Mojo. I'm feeling a even more geeky than usual today so...

reocorded at Rockfield Sutdios, Monmouth, Wales

started with producer Tom Rothrock, but abandoned that to produce themselves.

19 tracks recorded that will be pared down.

pro-tools and tape manipulation, where Hot Shots 2 was mostly pro-tools. return to Three EP sound according to Mason.

Band has been listening to Timbaland, the Neptunes, Dre, and '70s Eno.

four songs names are Simple, Troubles, She's So Wonderful, and Easy.

So it's business as usual.

hope that my expectations are not too high.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this band any good? I've never heard them.

Evan (Evan), Saturday, 30 August 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Band has been listening to Timbaland, the Neptunes, Dre, and '70s Eno.

*faints*

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 30 August 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

patrin are there ANY producers who wouldnt rep for tim, neps, dre and eno??

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 30 August 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway im mega hyped abt this! now that b band and b jaxx seem to be in a synchronized two year groove i will be fufilling my non-rap fav albums of the year biannually forever!!

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 30 August 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
and now?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i never got the "tapes" obv, so i guess they were scrapped after all.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

but i listened to hot shots not three days ago and it still sounds great...more fake dancehall, plz!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I heard that Nigel Godrich was producing the Beta Band's next album.

lou (lou), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup. From At Ease (who got their info from the NME): "The Beta Band have revealed that Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich will work on their new album. The Beta Band have supported Radiohead on their North American tour in 2001. In a message posted on the band's website, singer Steve Mason explained that the band are happy with the results. 'He's (Godrich) working at Mayfair Studios in London. Me and Rich (Greentree, bass) went down at the weekend to see what he's doing to our LP and its all good! 'Looks like 12 tracks will go on the record out of the 17 we recorded,' he explained. 'Mixing will be done in two weeks and the LP will be out in February.'"

lou (lou), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry :)

lou (lou), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care who produces it, just release it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Well... uh.. Godrich did Talkie Walkie. That was a damn fine record.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

whats talkie walkie?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

New Air album

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ok - i thought so - i just liked the fact you referred to it in the past tense even though it's not out yet. Nice!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! oops!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I am actually a visitor from six months in the future, which is why I referred to it that way and it's also how I know that Outkast is going to win Pazz & Jop

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the weather like?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

radioactive.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

give me a fiver and i'll tell you who wins the pres race

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They said they were listening to Tim, Neps and Dre for "HS2", this isn't a new direction.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

six months in the future? Have they started on that under water living accomodation yet?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

they tried to get neptunes to produce HSII i heard but, er, couldn't afford them. steve mason put something on the website a while ago when he said the new album was going to sound like "the milky way in a teacup." that's what i thought HSII sounded like but still...

oh yeah also working title is From Heroes to Zeros

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Then how did spymob afford 'em? bah, brit record companies shd put out a bit more; also, are the neps really more expensive than godrich?

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

spymob are their friends presumably? being the nerd backing band and all. i hope to god they're more expensive than godrich!!!

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Spymob are friends from Norfolk, VA, I think. The Neps will work with people for cheap if they like them, but will whore themselves out for odd tracks to make the megabucks. They must be at least 10 times more expensive than Godrich.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Beta Band: most wishy-washy band ever?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

How would that work if the Neptunes produced the Beta Band? In the Neptunes' world, "produce" means "create all the music except for the vocals." Would the Beta Band just let the Neptunes make the album & then come in for a couple of days to lay down vocals?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you heard the Kenna album, Mark?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nigel Godrich is the biggest twat I've never me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

met.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, he comes across like a big fat cock in interviews, ranting about his hatred of "technology" and so on.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

More technology please, Beta Band.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Know, haven't heard Kenna. How come?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Make that a "No"

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah also working title is From Heroes to Zeros

...they're doing a concept album on Bowie's music from the '77 to '87 era??

willem (willem), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

man, fuck a neptunes.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

all the betas really need in the studio is a steward to reign in their more uh prolix tendencies.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I don't think The Neptunes would be such a good idea. Would prefer Nellee Hooper circa mid-nineties - he could give the band a really smoooove brit-soul/nu-jack-swing/trip hop panache feel!

Or, like, Teddy Riley even! Get Blackstreet to lay down some backing vocals!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That would work wonders!

Kenna is spiff and I'm annoyed with myself for not including the album on the Pazz/Jop ballot. Bah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently new single 'assessment' is out and about - i can't find it on soulseek...anyone? anyone?

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Confirmation..

According to Pause & Play the forthcoming Beta Band album is: Heroes to Zeroes that is scheduled for an April release.

Elsewhere, Opal Music report a UK release date of April 26th. A single: Assessment will be released April 12th.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't wait. The Beta have a comment on their website saying that the "Assessment" video will depict the "history of human warfare". Does this mean it will be less or more shit than their other videos?

Simon H., Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
i've heard 'assessment' now.
holy shit, the beta band are angry! this is them rocking out, like, on record, as opposed to just live. sounds like a great first track for the album. but it's still really beautiful and spacey, how do they do this, everything they do sounds like it was recorded in space! god i love them!

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 23 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

opening 30 seconds of new single :
' i will follow' by U2. exactly the same.
thought it was a sample at first.

piscesboy, Monday, 23 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i thought the first 30 seconds sounded like 'skank bloc bologna'!

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 23 February 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

from my blog last friday:

Beta Band - Assessment

Just listened to the forthcoming Beta Band single: Assessment on the radio. It has guitar riffs that are virtually lifted from U2's - I Will Follow track [from debut Boy album back in 1980], others bits reminded me of Mansun, The Psychedelic Furs and the vocals are Stone Roses-alike.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 23 February 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, i knew i wasnt hearing things.
they'll get sued if they use it as it is!

piscesboy, Monday, 23 February 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

oh dear god, no.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"skank bloc bologna" is a hopeful sign though.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The u2 comparisons do give me the fear, I was looking forward to the new album.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard most of the album (kind of half paying attention though)... Didn't notice the U2 thing. It sounded big and punchy in a good sort of way, but still had the Beta Band vibe.

My sense is that they're at a point where so much money has been sunk into their albums that if they don't sell tons they'll have to break up cuz they can't recoup. Just based on a few interviews and the history of rock n' roll.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

hearing the 30 second loop, and the U2 thing is not as scary as it sounded. still wish that they went for less conventional instrumentation.

Wasn't this album supposed to be released last october? Did they scrap yet another album in favor of this one?

badgerminor (badgerminor), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"skank bloc bologna" is a hopeful sign though.

don't get your hopes up too much, now i've heard the whole song it probably is closer to u2 than early scritti! just wishful thinking on my part :-(

my heart did sink a bit when i heard all those guitars - it does sound a bit more conventional, i dunno, less uncanny (er, more canny?)than the Hot Shots stuff. still ace though.

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001LYGXU.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

that looks like kids sci-fi cartoon graphics from the 70s/80s

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is That Gonna Be The Cover?
If It Is I Don't Know How To React.
It's So...Un-Beta Bandish
Oh Well I'm Still Gonna Buy It. It Isn't As Bad As The N.E.R.D. Cover I Can Tell You That Much

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

'Assessment' is pretty boring. U2 guitar riffs hold my interest for like the first 5 seconds and then zzzz.... Hope the rest of the album is more fun.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

with artwork like that how could it not be?

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

With only thre humans on the cover, does that mean that one of them has left - the tall, ginger, English one?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

that cover looks like it's from a fucking Ash record!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, it made me think of this:

http://www.astralwerks.com/massive/grfx/massiveattack.gif

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

that new cover is fucking dreadful .... but then again all of their covers are awful, so i guess it works.

tk, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ned-Barima mind-meld continues!

I've always liked the Beta's covers. Never too ostentatious or pretentious. This new one isn't one of their wisest moves however. Another ref: the cover to Liquid Swords.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's scarily like both the Ash and Massive Attack ones.

Has the ginger bloke left?

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Mayeb they had him made into a cyborg.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

How kooky...

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm wondering if this album name was chosen when they saw that Muzik cover article on Justin Timberlake last year.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Assessment" will be available for about a week on my music blog. It's as people say.

Sean M (Sean M), Friday, 5 March 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
hmmmm.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i just posted a longer initial take on it to nylpm, but still: hmmmm.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(heroes to zeros, i mean.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Strongo, don't forget the extra E in Zeroes
http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&safe=off&q=%22heroes+to+zeroes%22+Beta+Band

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm indeed. It's very, very dull.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The big horn bit at the end of the single sounds like the Psychedelic Furs!!!!

(that's a good thing)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

and it's so short! 36 minutes! can that really be it?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

my one listen to it last night left me with no desire to ever hear it again.

otoh jess' nyplm post has made me dig out hot shots again.

btw, what was the truth with the 2nd cd of the first album thing? did it actually exist?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

jess it has 12 tracks and is 42mins 15s at least the one I got on suprnova.org is anyway

Shady Nook (shady nook), Monday, 29 March 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i just realized i'm missing two tracks.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's OK. I've heard worse.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

bosh.
42 minutes of loveliness. never heard Hot Shots so cant compare. but i have given this Heroes album a couple of spins and i can feel the urge to have it on a lot more over the next few days. cracking stuff. am i alone once more on this ?

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

phew. from scanning the thread i reckoned i had a different album than described above. one point .. the cover. the Mop ? prog like symbolism or just a laff inducing image ?

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Protsmouth Ginger is obviously suffering from ginger-guilt-loathing on the cover.

I'm feeling 'Assessment'.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, probably nick. i havent listened to it once since that initial three day period.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

also go buy hot shots immediately before you embarass yourself again

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to Hot Shots followed by Electro-Shock Blues last week. I have no idea if that was partly inspired by thoughts of links or comparisons.

Thoughts on the video, anyone?

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

point taken strongo. but hey .. only so much room on the shelves. even so .. i am now blushing in retro-embarassment.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

haha whoops, sorry mark! i thought southall wrote that, otherwise i never would have been so cunty.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(nick and i have a love/hate relationship, you see)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(we love to hate each other)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Hmmmm. I'm kind of enjoying this, despite lukewarm responses upthread I suspect the "straightforward guitar rock" aspect of the record has been overemphasised a bit, U2 samples and occasional guitar blowouts notwithstanding. It's probably slightly more conventional than Hot Shots, but its hardly the White Stripes either.

Not sure if the songs themselves are as strong this time round though - the vocals are the last thing I find myself listening to, and there isn't a standout track to compete with Broke or Quiet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 April 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

LAST TRACK. LAST TRACK. LAST TRACK.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm, what's the track order? I've got them all in alphabetical order on a Minidisc so I've no idea what goes where?

Pure For is kinda Spiritualized, don't you think? Lion Thief is also great - I can hear the Hot Shots sound kind of diffused through some of the gentler less rocky tracks, in the drums especially, but not as prominently as a track like Broke.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pure For" is the last track - I love the tiny wee yelps in the background, like a midget at a rave a thousand miles away.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Out Side" is great too.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Space Battle"!!

"I love you to pieces, I love you to pieces...."

turkey (turkey), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Space BEATLE", please!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

This album is lovely.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

tis indeed Sick-ness. i love it.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

just got my promo copy, halfway through, bored to tears.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's weird, listening to it with all the tracks in alphabetical order seemed to front-load most of the good ones and leave the really boring bits until the end. Now I'm listening to it in the correct order I'm finding it frustratingly inconsistent.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Teeny, may I have your copy, please*?

*In approximately 3 months when I'll probably be able to buy it.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm interested to know exactly what people who are disappointed in this record were expecting?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah to be fair they've never been my cup of tea. I'm sure this album is a grower but nothing grabs me about it.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

With Hot Shots I at least liked the way the vocals were delivered, they're so sleepy on this album.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

They were sleepy on Hot Shots?!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

People, don't tell me it's bad. I've heard two tracks and already have a determined belief that this album is going to blow me away. I refuse to believe otherwise.

bimble (bimble), Monday, 26 April 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

this album won't blow anyone away. it's consistent. it's rocking. the second track has a nice space-y groove. still a bit unremarkable. betas still poor at getting the balance right over the course of a record (like the super furry animals).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 26 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

But hey, Hot Shots was fabulous, wasn't it? Can we please state how we felt about that one before we talk about the new one? I don't inherently think using more guitars is a crime.

bimble (bimble), Monday, 26 April 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(i thought hot shots was a bit plain.)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 26 April 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's like one of the best dreams I never had.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 26 April 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, hot shots or the newie?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 26 April 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

saw them play at the ICA last night and the new songs sounded very good live. the album hasn't grabbed me yet. there are some very nice songs. i think it's a 'good' album. with good songs and good lyrics. i think it's the first 'good' album they've made, but it's still not as good as Hot Shots, if that makes sense. it feels less...visionary? more prosaic.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go so far as to say it's a very good album.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

would you like to explain what you like so much about it?

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 29 April 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to it.

No, that's facetious. I apologise. I'm ill. Here's the Stylus review and here's a link to my blog which has had lots of warble about it recently - the big and badly punctuated AIM conversation between me and Sam Bloch is all about it.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, thanks nick. i don't agree with you. no offence, but your review actually sounds like someone who doesn't like the record being forced to say nice things about it! that's how i feel when i try and think of nice things to say about it. i listened to this some more last night, and was actually getting impatient for it to end, i was that bored. this makes me really sad.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 29 April 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It does read like that, aye, I think cos I kenw Sam was reviewing it to and hated it. I'm not happy with it as a piece, but I am still really enjoying the record.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 29 April 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE! I CAN'T WAIT!!

The release date in the U.S. is TUESDAY!!

I was in a record shop today in fact and they were playing "It's not too Beautiful to me now..." And I SWOOONED! That told me that whoever worked there and put it on must be foaming at the mouth about the upcoming new album as much as I am. I just can't take it! I want to have it in my sweaty hands already.

Look, I was never a BB fanatic. Honestly. I just thought they were pretty cool. But I just have this FEELING that this new album is going to blind side me. And in any case, I think they beat Radiohead's ass because they are still refusing to get stuck in a rut!

Okay I'll be quiet now. (deep breath, stay calm, it's only a matter of days) I'll probably be back again in a week's time complaining about how I'm disappointed. NO Damnit I refuse to believe it!

bimble (bimble), Saturday, 1 May 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, hot shots or the newie?

Hot Shots. I won't hear the newie for another month.

Barima (Barima), Saturday, 1 May 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I have it now. I've played it. I don't understand how people can be disappointed. It sounds *different* and to me that's what counts. Beats the crap out of Radiohead's stale predicament, and if I don't like it just a little tiny bit more than the new Orbital, it's certainly a worthy contender.

This is a direct descendant of the Beatles, and to me, that's the litmus test for Class A British pop/rock.

bimble (bimble), Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't managed to listen, to this, yet.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

schtick's, entertainment value, fading, quickly

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If Radiohead hear this, they will be so ashamed they will slink back to their holes with tail between their legs and come up with a better album already!

bimble (bimble), Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, i saw the CD for sale today... I do like the front and back cover juxtaposition.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 8 May 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I'm listening to the new one now, and it sounds EXACTLY like what I wanted Hot Shots to sound like. It builds on the momentum that i felt with the ep's and first album. The new one even sounds like it was recorded BEFORE hot shots. Was Hot Shots some sort of willful deflation of a growing popularity? That would be kinda crazy. I haven't actually read anything about the band since the first album. I didn't hate hot shots, but i never listened to it after buying it. Probably 3 times altogether since i bought it. I've listened to those 2 side-long seascape ambient numbers that were scrapped from the first album more than that.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Strongo's hype really makes me want to revisit Hot Shots II, even though at the time I thought most of it sounded like Sting (I dug "Squares" though, and that "To You Alone" single was terrif). I'm hoping I'll get to hear a promo of this through one of my usual sources.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

sting?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread wounds me

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's nice. the new one. lovely in some places. perfect for the summery weather outside. Strongo must hate it.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha! get it strongo? cuz you are so cranky and you hate the sun.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it would wound you, Strongo, which is why I hesitated on making the comparison. But when the band gets mellow and Mason pours out the vocals there's just one man's face who comes to mind. And it's Gordon's.

If it's any consolation it sounds like the BEST Sting since, I dunno, "Walking On The Moon."

If you liked the old stuff than you will like the new one, but if you never cared in the first place you will probably continue not caring. (I'm getting that put on a t-shirt)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"you" meaning the world, not anyone here right now.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Strongo, I've got some killer Hoyt Axton albums that are angry as fuck if you want me to tape you copies.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well my, my, my, my, strongo...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed strongo's complaint, even though it was made v. soon after I had posted.

what's wrong, strongo?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
This is great! I've never liked them all that much before, but this album is definitely making an impression on me. Maybe I need to go back and listen to their older stuff, but yeah, I agree with Scott; this is how I've always wanted them to sound.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 28 May 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
i heard a song or two from this and my reaction was about as "eh" as jess's, anybody still listening to this and think i should give it another try? (i'm looking especially for responses from people that didn't like it much at first)(that doesn't mean you, southall)( ;-) )

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
Nigel Godrich is the biggest twat I've never me.

PROTO-MARISSA

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Were you searching for permutations of Marissa phrases?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

no, I was searching for discussion of the beta band (having recently bought Hot Shots II) and stumbled across that magical moment...

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

what's the band that's mostly the beta band reformed, i forget?

Alan, Thursday, 22 March 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Aliens.

Not heard 'em yet.

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

cheers!

Alan, Thursday, 22 March 2007 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'm listening their album right now. This is about the 5th listen today, and I still can't find it boring.

zeus, Thursday, 22 March 2007 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

(I mean the Aliens album, of course)
