New album leaked
― alex in montreal, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)
So they're good live? I was going to see them without a doubt, but I just found out I'm going to be driving for 8 hours the night before the show and then it's a 2 hour drive to the show, so it better be pretty kickass because I'm going to be exhausted...
― Reatards Unite, Friday, 24 August 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)
that's a shitload of driving. but yeah they were pretty great when i saw em in new york.
this is pretty representative of their show i'd say. they're fun.

― dmr, Friday, 24 August 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)
they're great live. not sold on the new album yet, though.
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 24 August 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)
Always great live, some of the best shows I've seen in the last few years. Still haven't heard the new LP.
― Bob Standard, Friday, 24 August 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)
awesome live, generally. the new album is pretty standard Black Lips, though it admittedly is slightly better production than they usually shit out.
― Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 24 August 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)
peeps are mad because in mpls black lips and jay reatard are playing same nite, different venues...garagepunk dudes are all buggaboo!
― M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 24 August 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)
if there's one thing i've learned about pitchfork this year, it's that jason crock and i have nothing in common when it comes to music. [which is totally fine of course, although if i could get that time back that i saw black lips and the ponys play it'd be great too.]
― fukasaku tollbooth, Thursday, 6 September 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)
I would feel more conflicted about them (in the "why wouldn't you just put on a "Back from the Grave" or "Nuggets" disc?" sense) if the songs weren't so catchy. I would like to see them live.
― Ben Boyerrr, Thursday, 6 September 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)
I dunno, fukasaku, I think the only thing wrong with that review was that it shoulda been rated higher than an 8.3, judging by the text of the review. Is it just me or do those ratings seem more random all the time?
I think this new one is great and easily their best. Anyone else think this band owes as much a debt to the Billy Childish / Dan Melchior school of garage rock as to the Nuggets legacy? Where is the love?
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 6 September 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)
Does anyone know if Good Bad Not Evil is coming out on vinyl either tomorrow or at any point in the future?
― Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)
they definitely sound like they love the mummies. i think i still prefer the last album to the new one (it had 'dirty hands' which slays all) but the new one is very very great.
― stevie, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)
they did a vinyl version of their last vice record on their own label, die slaughterhaus. maybe same for the new one?
― fritz, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)
according to another super dorky msg board I frequent, the answer is "yes." on die slaughterhaus. with a gatefold sleeve. yippee.

has anyone heard the new album? is it just what i've got, or are there actually 'bleeps' on "i saw god". ont really feelig this at all
― jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Sunday, 8 February 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)
Heard it, liked it, don't think I heard any bleeps. But yeah, the album does loose steam toward the end.
― xhuxk, Sunday, 8 February 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)
(Actually think I liked that track more than the other two slowish ones that came before it, though.)
― xhuxk, Sunday, 8 February 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)
i dont know man, i heard the album and the end is the fucking bomb. that die slaughterhaus "hooooo!" chant in "i saw god" is one of the best moments on there. they recorded a whole ton of songs and there are some really amazing things that didn't end up on the album.
― Adam Bruneau, Monday, 9 February 2009 04:54 (sixteen years ago)
"Drugs" is my jam right now. That song is catchy in like 20 different ways.

― legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 19 March 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, i like it, glad they brought back the shitty production and didn't get any more cleaned up like the last album sort of threatened. still just listening to the leak of this, gonna buy it at the weekend, does the proper version still have those bleeped out bits on the last track?
― vain_bowers, Thursday, 19 March 2009 15:11 (sixteen years ago)
does the proper version still have those bleeped out bits on the last track?
my favourite moment! (i don't know if the bleeps are included on the proper release)
― Ludo, Thursday, 19 March 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, my official copy on CD has those bleeps and backwards scrambles on that last track.
― legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 19 March 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)
"The Drop I Hold" is brilliant, there's always one moment that makes me think they're geniuses and on 200 Million it's this one
― preview& potmXII& chinchillas& surfboar (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i really like 'the drop i hold'
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)
Cole said the bleeps are intentional, so they should be on all versions.
it's far cooler than not, if you ask me..
― Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 19 March 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)
i like a couple of their psych-garagey tracks, but i cannot stand the dude's voice and it prevents me from getting into them

New album leaked. I really like "Bone Marrow" the most out of all the songs. "Raw Meat" is really great too, reminds me a lot of the Ramones. "Family Tree" is rad too. "Don't Mess Up My Baby" has a nice Bo Diddley beat that i wish they did more of.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 26 May 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)
not hitting me hard. feels a bit sluggish and missing something.
― brio, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)
that track Modern Art is ok. I'm pretty stuck on Let It Bloom / Los Valientes / Good Bad Not Evil and haven't been able to get into their new stuff from 200Mil on.
― dmr, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)
Good Bad Not Evil still a sort of pinnacle, I agree
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)
I like this album more than I've ever liked an album by them, but it could be because "Family Tree" knocks me for a loop at the beginning and I'm in an altered state for the duration of the rest of it.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah - "Family Tree" is a good one.Agree about Good Bad Not Evil. Maybe that was like their End Of The Century or something - the last one to be in any way neccessary.FWIW the Ronson production seems fine - that's not what's bugging me at all.I'll give it another shot.

nah, it is a great album but let it bloom/forest spirit are both better. prob not going to listen to the new one because i hate them so much now
― flopson, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)
flopson OTM. Quality of songs & recording on Let it Bloom is insane. All killer no filler.
They should really just say fuck these big producers let's record on a boombox like Cole has always said.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)
flopson & AB OTM. one of my favorite modern garage albums, maybe the best of the 00s.
― And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Friday, 10 June 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)
I absolutely love Arabian Mountain, easily their best and most consistent since Let It Bloom. I was really nervous about the Ronson production, but I think it sounds great.
― the fey bloggers are onto the zagat tweets (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 June 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, exactly.
― the fey bloggers are onto the zagat tweets (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 June 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)
Second listen, I liked this more. "Family Tree" is still fucking great, easily the best tune on here, and I now kinda love "Modern Art," "Mad Dog," "Dumpster Dive" and the last song (I like that their last songs have been pretty weird lately, ie "I Saw God" and now this new one which is all helium psychedelia or something) but this is still like 6 songs too long. Lotta filler and unmemorable / insubstantial tunes, and the one shameless Ramones rip just plain bums me out. Still prefer GBNE but I'll be jamming this one again.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Saturday, 18 June 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)
I think they recorded like two dozen tracks and actually whittled it down to this. They record alot of stuff that doesn't end up on the albums.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:26 (fourteen years ago)
"Family Tree" is the best on here, that's for sure! So huge and epic and yet still very rockin'.
ok im going to listen to this
― flopson, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:45 (fourteen years ago)
The Ramones song ("Raw Meat") sounds so much like the Ramones that I can't not be in total love with it, because the Ramones are so often my favorite band of all time.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 19 June 2011 07:01 (fourteen years ago)
I really love these guys to death, but after hearing "Don't Fall Down" by the 13th Floor Elevators tonight (I know, I know), I feel like I found the source of 85% of the inspiration for this band.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 29 July 2011 03:10 (fourteen years ago)

― skip, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)
It's a reference to black lips you get when you drink too much red wine. Tho that connotation is probably the reason why brilliant side-project The Spooks never went anywhere.

"that connotation" + dudes' casual racism in interviews
ps i admit i nonetheless love a bunch of black lips songs
