Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad this list is kinda wacky and idiosyncratic I'm glad Robert Quine and Ron Asheton got props but godDAMN did Angus Young get robbed. And where the fuck is Malcolm? Neil Young got robbed too. In fact, all the guitarists I like should be higher and all the ones I don't like or have never heard should be lower on it.

Kirk Hammett is evidently quite the shizzle.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as I love Radiohead, Ed O'Brien doesn't appear to do much of anything.

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It goes terribly wrong at #4.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to think if Bonnie Raitt had put an album out recently they would have remembered her.

Man did Eddie Van Halen lose his cool. I'm kinda shocked Sonic Youth got higher than him. STEPHEN STILLS got higher than Eddie Van Halen. Did the terrorists win or something? I'm gonna play "Eruption" outside of RS headquarters screaming "ASSHOLES" with my middle fingers outstretched. I'd like to think someone is already doing this. As "Fargo Rock City" notes, Eddie usually no. 2 on these things.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

HOLY FUCK WHERE IS LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM?

Ok, I'll admit his shredding on the new Mac album is really annoying but GODDAMN WHERE IS LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM? That mofo doesn't use a pick! And he's got way cooler hair than Mark Knopfler.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: EVH -- Yeah, that's my thinking as well. If EVH isn't going to be in the top 5, he may as well not even be included. It's obvious the listmakers don't listen to music.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Metal Sludge had some things to say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony is OTM

this list does not include Vini Reilly = it is worthless

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.lewzworld.com/vanhalen/pics/vanh002.jpg
why don't more guitarists make faces like this today?

This photo leads to the obvious question...who are the 100 greatest KEYTAR players of all time????
http://www.janhammer.com/Img025.jpg

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the correct answer is "none of them"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way Jim thinks.

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

At least in regard to Vini Reilly anyway... I'm a bit surprised by the absence of Nick Drake too, in the circumstances.

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

No Slash? I am aghast.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ozzy Stillbourne from Metal Sludge deserves to have his rant included in full
This list might as well be in Chinese because I just don't understand it!

Can somebody, anybody, explain to me why Eddie Van Halen is #70 when Jack White is #17, Jerry Garcia is #13, Kurt Cobain is #12, and Kirk Hammett is #11?

How many kids have sat in their bedroom playing guitar and said, "One day I want to play like Jerry Garcia."

NONE!!! It's never fucking happened in the history of the world!!!

When was the last time you saw Jerry Garcia on the cover of Guitar World, Guitar, or any other guitar magazine? And he's number 13 of ALL TIME? When you see guitar players talk about their influences, how many say Jerry Fucking Garcia? Not any that I've ever known!! Nobody picks up a guitar to play like Jerry Garcia!! They play guitar to be like Eddie, or play Black Sabbath or Kiss riffs, or shit like that. Nobody's sitting around learning Grateful Dead songs! I think somebody was doing more drugs that Jerry ever did if they think that's the case.

And who got the blowjob that made Jack White of the White Stripes #17. Yeah, he plays guitar, but #17 of ALL TIME?? Fuck, isn't it a little early in his career to already be #17? If Rolling Stone wanted to be funny, why not just include Kristy "Krash" Majors from Pretty Boy Floyd? That would make just as much sense.

Kirk Hammett is #11, yet Slash is nowhere on the list to be found? And James Hetfield comes up with most of Metallica's riffs anyway. And Kirk is #11 and Tony Iommi is #86. Makes sense.......if you're a fucking idiot.

Now about Kurt Cobain, sure, he wrote some good songs, yak yak yak, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is one of the biggest songs of ever, blah blah blah, but half the time he wasn't even in tune, he's not exactly a virtuoso, and he certainly shouldn't be above Eddie Van Halen or even Tony Iommi. When people think about great guitar players, Kurt doesn't pop into mind. Maybe as a songwriter, but not as a guitar player.

How did Joan Jett get ranked above Agnus Young? She's on the list at #87 and Agnus is 96. He barely made the list. I'm beginning to wonder if Rolling Stone even listens to music? Who knew Joan was better than Steve Vai, Neil Schon, Tom Schultz, Ted Nugent, Peter Frampton or even Slash and Zakk Wylde, all of whom aren't even on the list. And I'd say Lita Ford can play better guitar than Joan anyway!

Blender's Top 100 Worst Bands was also pretty gay, just because they don't pay attention to things they already wrote, and they also didn't include Bang Gang or Wild Boyz anywhere on that list, so how accurate can it be? For example, Insane Clown Posse was the #1 Worst Band, and they said their worst record was "The Wraith." However, when "The Wraith" came out, Blender gave it 3 stars out of 5, which is "good for it's genre." So if ICP is the worst band, and "The Wraith" is their worst CD, then why did it get 3 out of 5 stars? If that's a 3, what's the rest of their catalog? I'm not defending ICP, I'm just saying if you're gonna do something like that, pay attention to what the fuck you are doing. You can't say something is horrible if you gave it good marks in the past. It just goes to show that all these lists are done with an agenda in mind. They're bullshit.

Perhaps Rolling Stone doesn't like Eddie Van Halen, or he blew them off at one time, whatever, so BANG, he's #70. Critics love Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Ramones, and the White Stripes, so they're automatically in the Top 20. You're SUPPOSED to like and respect them because of their musical integrity, so that's why they're there. Jerry Garcia is dead, literally, and had a cult of drugged-up hippies following him around, so because he's dead, he needs to be remembered as a great guitarist, right, so he's #13. And it's hip to like Sonic Youth, so we'll put them way above Joe Perry and Les Paul, who basically started the whole thing.

It's bullshit, I tell ya! If you're gonna have a list, at least be in the ballpark. Maybe you think Eddie Van Halen should be #5 and your friend thinks he should be #10, and that's fine. But at least have him towards the top! At least be somewhat human with your thought process and understand what the fuck you're rating! This just goes to show you how out of touch Rolling Stone, and most of the music media is. They have no clue.

On that note, Metal Sludge has decided to do our own stupid list, and we'll be the first to tell you that's it's stupid and subjective and you shouldn't give two shits about it, but we're doing it anyway. We're doing Metal Sludge's "50 Worst Rock CDs OF ALL TIME!!!" We need to throw in "OF ALL TIME" because that's how you're supposed to do it. But we're gonna try to make this as good as we can. We're not even gonna include Warrant, or L.A. Guns, or Slaughter, or bands we generally diss. We want to really come up with shitty CDs, and there are shittier bands thatn Warrant, L.A. Guns and Slaughter, so they won't be in our Top 50. It would be easy to put them there, but we're actually trying to be fair, believe it or not. We came up with 60 some CDs and now we're at the point, "how the hell do you rank these?" We haven't figured that out yet, but we will, and it'll be a lot more realistic than anything Rolling Stone or Blender can do.

I'm out like Steve Vai on the Top 100 Guitarists,

Just one thing... why do so many metalheads always think metal guitarists are better than everyone else and metal is the only true guitar style to play etc. Dont like Grateful Dead but cant complain about Garcias influence. Yeah hes no way no17 best ever but they should stick toc omplaining that SLASH ISNT IN THERE!

Metal God, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenny insanely OTM. WHERE THE FUCK IS SLASH? Someone should play a loop of "Sweet Child O' Mine" outside of RS. At least Eddie got ON the list.

I'd assume the exclusion was because he hasn't done shit in ages, but there's some wackadoodle from Free on here, and unless just not on the zeitgeist anymore, I'm under the impression more people remember G'N'R than Free.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I was so angry I forgot to put the "I'm" between unless and just.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Moving backwards logically from Reilly...where the hell is Johnny Marr?

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

few guitarists rivaled whothefuckever from Quicksilver Messenger Service, whose dick EVERYBODY has been ridin', doncha know.

Gah, Marr!!!! This list is going to seem as bad as Mein Kampf by the time this thread peters out.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

no Marr, no Buckingham, no goddamn clue

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

J. Mascis
Bob Stinson
C.C. MUTHERFUCKIN' DEVILLE!!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Heres what the punters say

http://www.metal-sludge.com/RollingStoneFeedback.htm
some funny shit there

Metal God, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how they feel the need to elaborate on some guitarists and tell you what bands they're from, yet leave certain others a mystery.

I don't think Tom Morello is a great guitarist, but, without even thinking, I could tell you he's been in both RATM and Audioslave.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter "The Other God Of Arpeggios" Buck!

my favorite weedle-wee'rs AND janglists...DENIED!

Tom Morello deserves his place. His guitar solos are very memorable and full of Brian May worthy effects. And like Queen he makes a point of mentioning that NO SYNTHESIZERS are on his albums.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

heheh The Edge. even fucking Dean Wareham plays more competent guitar than the Edge. heck, even *I* do.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Toni Iommi got robbed

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

no fair. The Edge was the god of mountaintop echo for a while. Ira Kaplan stole "My Heart's Reflection" from "With Or Without You," man. The Edge should be on this

Ira Kaplan
Sonny Sharrock

my favorite noise spurtelers...DENIED!

TONY IOMMI!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the Edge has nice sounds and knows how to use an ebow but dude couldn't shred to save his life. perhaps his greatness is in his simplicity.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

my point. I think memorability is more important then shreditude. Though memorable shreditude is a beautiful thing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

As a youth, my guitar role models were the Edge and EVH (strange bedfellows, I know). If I might stick up for the Edge a little, I'd say that some of the atmospheric playing he did between 1984 and 1987 was spectacular. Considering what he'd been playing before and what he's been playing since, though, I'm convinced it was an accidental stumble across greatness.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ozzy,

I'm with you on this whole list being a pile crap. It's astounding to see that Sonic Youth, Radiohead, and The MC5 all had guitarists that ranked back to back. Yeah. 50,000 guitarists out there, and 3 bands' guitarists all rank back to back. Maybe because they stand back to back
on stage. That explains it! How come Brad Whitford didn't follow Joe Perry? Where was Malcolm Young following Angus? Where's Ron Wood? Certainly you would think he would be right behind Keith Richards! I may not be the foremost expert on the subject, but there's many people on this list I've never heard of!

I'm out like the brain stem of whomever wrote this list.

Barry

Rankin, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the dude from Gang Of Four should be on this.
I'm gonna be a brat and state that BRIX SMITH should be on this too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The list's most serious flaw is the absence of Buddy Holly. Just a mere photo of him holding his Strat is enough to annihilate more than half the guitarists listed.

Marcus Barr (Marcus Barr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Other favorites from back in the day -- Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper from the Church. Not that I expected them to be on such a list, but that no one ever talks about them is kind of sad.

the dude from Gang Of Four should be on this
Andy Gill will have his revenge!

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm kinda surprised Carrie Brownstein didn't make the list. I don't know if she's thaaat good but I guess Joan Jett was enough of a Riot grrl-stylee token for 'em. I think Brownstein's better than Jett, though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

nice call on Marty W-P. the lead line from "Reptile" is one of the things that made me want to play guitar

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricky Wilson!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Carrie's up there with Vini - it doesn't sound like she's playing difficult, complicated stuff but believe me, she is.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Doug Martsch

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Larry Coryell?

dlp9001, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

LOU REED!!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

they included robert johnson but not muddy waters? to use a time-honored phrase, wtf?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

lou reed is on the list, at 52.

steve and mick jones are also notable no-shows.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna be a brat and state that BRIX SMITH should be on this too.

Back to back with Craig Scanlon & Marc Riley, of course.

This is perhaps the most rediculous list I've seen in some time, though I am enjoying the Metal Sludge posts...

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I know Lou Reed is on the list, but I REALLY didn't expect that. Is he really that respected in the guitar playing community? I love his playing but I wouldn't have thought he'd make a list above VAN HALEN!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

As I read it, I kept realizing more clearly that of course...
http://www.bingebuddies.com/Pictures/PROMO%20JPG/BUCKETHEAD%20BW%20PROMO%20SHEET.jpg
...was going to be found nowhere on this "list". And thus I burneth the mag in effigy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckethead fucking SUCKS! I had to endure his music all the time when I worked at the record shop of one of the people who put it out

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Also no Maybelle Carter. For shame.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos you hurt me in my heart immeasurably. :(

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The list is laughable and totally beneath contempt.

I wouldn't walk across the street to take a long, relieving piss on the dolts who compiled that joke.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

damn diamond you're lazy. i'd walk across the street to piss on rolling stone writers, in a heartbeat (christgau excluded of course)

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Leary, Bob Mould, John Fahey, John McLaughlin, Kawabata Makota = all missing. (esp. the last three; the first two are just stylistically influential, not guitar gods).

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The list is laughable and totally beneath contempt. Oh somebody already said that, well they're right. Just one issue - why Jimmy Page is not number 2 is beyond me? And why the American obsession with Eric Clapton?

mentalist (mentalist), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright Page doesn't have to be number 2, I did notice one Robert Johnson in there amongs others. But he must stand as the greatest guitarist the UK has produced, at least the greatest rock (oh, unfashionable word) guitarist.

mentalist (mentalist), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK I hate living in the FUCKING UK because whenever an interesting (ie 'rawk') topic comes up by the time I get out of bed it's all over but the shouting and meanwhile nobody in this fucking shithole cunt-ass country gives a fuck about anything but twee indie chart shit! (cf 'Pulp Fiction' "Yo! Flock of Seagulls!" DEATH To TWEE!) Fuck this place! I want asylum status in the USA as a persecuted plank-spanker...uh whatever...yeah this list is a new low, I wasn't expecting much but this time even the blurbs sucked! The ppl who read RS to find out about pop culture are now AJ Weberman's children - anyway I could go on forever about this but for now - John Cipollina at #31 for "versions of Bo Diddley's 'Mona' and 'Who Do You Love'", meanwhile BD himself is at #37! (Not to mention Robbie Krieger being cited for mastery of "instrumental interplay", although he was famous for being in a band without a bass player)

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Mentalist - citing Page as finest UK guitarist!? He was good, but still unfit to trim Peter Green's wild-ass nails

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(as for O'Brien/Greenwood - unfit to cut lines for Felder/Frey/Walsh)

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the list doesn't have dave q on it = it is rub

(hey dave!)

geeta, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo G! Shout-out to Cali!

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

These lists are always a load of (insert foul smelling whatever.)

This one I didn't think was terribly horrific - I mean sure, they left a lot of people out - but the list was reasonable considering it was Rolling Stone - with the exceptions of Jack White & Kurt Cobain - Jack White's blurb talks about how he was influenced by the greats .. (yeah - numbers 18-100!) .. and anyone can play like Cobain - every fuckin' kid who starts a band can play like Cobain.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm disappointed by the exclusion of John McGeoch and Adrian Belew, among others.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Ian, they put John McLaughlin on this list at #49.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, that list is horrible.

I would love to know what the criteria for being a 'good guitarist' according to rolling stone is.

If I were to do a 'top 100' guitarists I'd have make some scorecards or something, kinda dungenons and dragons style, (virtuosity, creativity, hair etc). Thinking about it, it wouldn't be an easy task, but fucking hell, some of the choices on that list are awful.

I'm a guitarist, just about all of my guitar heros are missing;

TOMMY EMMANUEL! By far the finest guitarist I have ever seen play, ever. Download one of his beatles jams, or his lovely acoustic work; electric he's not as impressive, but he's a fingerpicker. I have much more respect for fingerpickers.

WHERE THE FUCK IS JOE SATRIANI! If we're talking technique, speed, inside out knowledge of every thing you can do on a guitar, noone can match satch. I hate his music/songwriting on the whole. However, seeing him give seminars about his style/technique is a life changing experience!

IAN WILLIAMS! Ok, he's just my favourite guitarist, and I wouldn't expect to see him on a RS list, but does anyone else agree that his work with Don Cab is just incredible, innovative, brain-crushing?

Blah I could go on, agree with Jimi at no1...BB King?! What the..? He has this one riff that kinda goes doo-de-duh-dada-da-dum, yeh its cool, but..ah..whatever...

TomB (TomB), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Eddie Van Halen #70. Rolling Stone RIP, mk 84.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Could somebody please tell me how Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo are in any way talented???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Could somebody please tell me how Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo are in any way talented???"...

In exactly the same way as Hendrix, NOISE!!!!

TomB (TomB), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee's talented. Thurston is just in the right place at the right time.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Just because your guitar sounds noisy doesn't make you a virtuoso. Can Lee Ranaldo play "Voodoo Chile"? No he bloody cannot.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he can, actually. But why would he? It's already been done.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet he can, though

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You don't have to try out on guitar etudes to play in bands anymore Mr. Snrub. They stopped doing that when Hendrix failed his Paganini audition.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ranaldo could play "Voodoo Chile" but it would be crap compared to if Paul Leary did it

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Time to summon the googlers, now!

"Dave Navarro", Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(And before they I arrive let me be the first to mention: Steve Albini, Billy Gibbons, Nile Rodgers, Uli Roth, Michael Karoli, Jad Fair, Neal Hagerty, Roger McGuinn, Joey Santiago)

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, sort of shocked Bill Frisell wasn't mentioned.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

why wasn't i mentioned? i played a solo without any bum notes once

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff Baxter. "Cold Love" had a better solo than "Beat It", except unlike that one it had something to do with the song it was in. (I wouldn't really care except that "Beat It" seems to always feature in EVH's Career Highlights/historical-significance bids, even though 'that solo' was both a) the worst thing he did up up to that point, and b) the worst moment on a Jacksons record up to that point

dave q, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Nile Rodgers!!!

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, sort of shocked Bill Frisell wasn't mentioned

I would have mentioned him, but it seemed like this is a pretty rock-centric list. They didn't even bother to include Andres Segovia - the father of modern classical guitar. Or famous and influential jazz players like Django Reinhardt.

In terms of contemporary players, I would have liked to see Nels Cline, Dave Tronzo, and Fred Frith in there too.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Derek Bailey.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't actually read the list but Tom Verlaine and Keiji Haino should be on it.

Sarah Ferguson, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and of course Randy Rhodes.

Sarah Ferguson, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

thurston moore & lee ranaldo together are the better than either apart. Same thing that Tom Verlaine AND Richard Lloyd should be included, since Tom alone ain't shit without Richard to intertwine with.

still, yeah yeah, list is bullshit. Including Lightnin' Hopkins, but but Lonnie Johnson, feh. Including Cobain without Bob Mould or Frank Black or Steve Albini.

still, hardly any of those guys would have been on thelist without the quality of the SONGS they played. Virtuosity is all well & good, but means DICK without a proper song.

yeah, Randy Rhodes, indeed.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Fucking Thunders. Duh.

Here's my personal guitar pantheon:

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. everyone else

[honorable mentions: Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson, Scotty Moore, Keith Richards, Mick Jones, Robert White (for "My Girl" alone), Bob Mould, Eddie Van Halen, George Harrison, Angus Young, Sekou "Diamond Fingers" Diabate (Bembeya Jazz), Dick Dale, Greg Ginn, John Crozier (Hang Ups, Legendary Jim Ruiz Group), Steve Cropper, D. Boon, The Edge, Adrian Belew, Leo Nocentelli (the Meters), Barthelemy Attiso (Orchestra Baobab), Link Wray, Lee Ranaldo/Thurston Moore (and anyone who disses 'em is basically saying "I haven't listened to new music for 20 years"), Ian MacKaye/Guy Picciotto (Fugazi), Steve Vai (and every metal guitarist who sounded like he was playing Mozart at 120 mph), Ernest Ranglin (and all those rocksteady guitarists), Bo Diddley (proto-indie rock), Roger McGuinn, Johnny Marr, and all the ones I forgot...]

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude. Dick mufucking Dale. Not on list.

I'd just like to point out that TomB and Tom Breihan are two entirely different people. Tom Breihan does not extoll Joe Satriani. Thank you.

ejad (daje), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean I'd put him at the top too but I find the consensus on his placement here striking.

ejad (daje), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to mention the obvious, but there are only TWO women on the list. no marc bolan either. pathetic.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! Thanks earlnash! I missed that. Probably in my "how can this list NOT have Buckthead anywhere" furor.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a little upsetting that billy corgan wasnt mentioned either. plus, he seems like the kind of person RS would love to rant about.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Most inexcusable omissions: Elmore James, Buddy Holly, Curtis Mayfield, Steve Jones, Lowman Pawling.

Also Lindsey Buckingham, Phil Manzanara, Charlie Patton, Carl Perkins.

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is J Mascis???

Dinosaur Sr, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking disgusting list.

Barry

Thanks for that post about Rolling Stone and their useless fucking list! I was just griping about that kind of shit last week to a friend of mine - how all these music magazines waste space with these stupid goddamn lists that no one cares about. God forbid they should actually write about an up-and-coming band that could use the exposure! It's either garbage like this, or yet another cover story on Jimi Hendrix and the upcoming release of some newly remastered version of a tape someone found of him learning to tune his guitar. It's a cheap, lazy excuse for journalism and I'm glad someone called these shitwits on it. And seriously, it's like they mix three different standards to compile one list like this - either you rank them on:

1. Technical ability, in which case Eddie, Yngwie, Vai, Satriani, etc. would always be at the top (and people who don't know anything about guitar playing or music theory aren't likely to give a bouncing fuck).

2. The amount of influence they've had on other guitarists, in which case you should be getting the opinions of... other guitarists, not a bunch of writers!

3. Sheer popularity, which obviously means nothing.

Shit like this is why I skim through their reeking-of-fruity-perfume magazine while standing at the rack in Barnes & Noble without buying it.

Baz, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Great job on calling out Rolling Stone, and MTV on those utter farces of lists they created. I for one realize that when I think of revolutionary, great guitar players, I sure as hell don't think of Ike Turner, Jack White, Joni Mitchell, Joan Jett, and Jerry Garcia, among others that have no place on that list, cough:KurtCobain:cough.

Maybe its just my obsession with hard rock music that makes me appreciate a Slash, or Steve Vai, or Zakk Wylde, or Randy Rhoads more than this hippie garbage that they decided to throw on the list, many of which, weren't included on the list, or were placed at an insulting position on the list. Edward Van Halen at # 70 is the biggest laughingstock in the history of all lists. Like him, hate him, Dave or Sammy, tonuge or no tongue, cancer or no cancer, the guy was amazing. He revolutionized the instrument, and rolling stone spits in his face and puts him at #70.... ridiculous.

Call me crazy, I think Buckethead is better than at least 30 of the guitarists listed.... maybe thats just my bias. I haven't even heard of many of the people they listed(hey, chalk that up to only being 21), and a lot of the people they did list, absolutely suck. I have owned a guitar for about a month, and I think i am already better than Jack White.

As for the bands, MTV has been up Nirvanas ass since the day Kurt blew his head off his shoulders.... Any time MTV has a list about bands, songs, videos, singers, guitarists, etc... expect Nirvana and/or Kurt to top the list. I don't take as much offense to the bands list as the guitarists list... but hey, MTV blows too.

I have been complaining up and down the internet to pretty much everyone about these lists, and its about damn time that someone(you), has made our opinion heard.

Great job....

I'm out like Rolling Stones credibility....

Trey, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, they were never going to put Chris Brokaw/Thalia Zedek on that list, but shame on Rolling Stone and SHAME ON ILM for the inexcusable omission of Dave Navarro. Generally I'm not a great fan of virtuoso musicianship, but have none of the compilers ever heard 'Three Days'? Jeez...

Ben Dot, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ike Turner on "Rocket 88" = rocknroll ground zero

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No Josh Homme? No Dave Navarro? No Slash? No Grant Green? what sort of list is that???
What context was the list in? Best technical? Best innovators? Most Influential? Designed to piss off metal-sludge readers the most?

BumblebeeMan, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I for one realize that when I think of revolutionary, great guitar players, I sure as hell don't think of (snip) Joni Mitchell, Joan Jett (snip) among others that have no place on that list.

yeah i can't believe they put a couple of WOMEN on there, what kind of pansy-assed list IS this?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN

for "Far Beyond the Sun", at least

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a major triumph of jazz that so many people are complaining that improv giants are left off the list. Twenty years ago or so, nobody would have peeped.

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Admittedly, I'm not a guitar player, though I do own one. After consulting my feng shui guide, I leaned it against an amplifier on one wall of my apartment. Now I am one with my space, letting it guide me to a state of spiritual bliss.
But more to the point, I've never equated superior technique or virtuosity with greatness. Moving your fingers real fast never impressed me. When I saw him in concert, I was more impressed with how Neil Young coaxed raw emotion from his instrument than his actual "ability."
I realize Vai and Malmsteen, et al. are, technically, extremely competent guitarists, but their virtuosity leaves me kind of cold. Just my opinion.
For the record, I've seen Jad Fair make more noise with two strings and an unplugged electric guitar than most guitarists. Of course, it was kind of like performance art. And he jumped real high.
That being said, it's just another stupid list.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave (re Jimmy Page) - OK I've spent the last few months watching teh led Zeppelin DVD, I'm prepared to accept Peter Green at his best duelling with Jimmy Page to, as long as Eric Clapton isn't around.

dave q, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Re Kirk Hammett - yeah the placing was inexcusable but if he was further down the list I could imagine them trying to acknowledge the more metal end of things but if that was the case where the FUCK are Hanneman/King? (King played on 'Licence to Ill', for Baphomet's sake!)

dave q, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
what the hell did they do. put the top 100 guitarists in a hat burn it and get brittney spears to make up the rest

stevie stevens, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Stephen Stills above Buddy Guy pretty much sums it up.

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

whoever compiled this list ought to be shot for this reason and this reason alone:

45 Frank Zappa

look who they rank ABOVE him:

11 Kirk Hammett of Metallica
12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana
13 Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead
16 Johnny Ramone of the Ramones
17 Jack White of the White Stripes
18 John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers
21 George Harrison
24 The Edge of U2
26 Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave
27 Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits
28 Stephen Stills

there are NO reasonable arguments to be had to defend these rankings. it ends there. TO THE GUILLOTINE.

Eisbär on the warpath!!!! (llamasfur), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

not to mention James Blood Ulmer, Sonny Sharrock, John Mclaughlin. Guess they're jazz or something. I think Henry Vestine of Canned Heat is on there to test if people actually read this thing. Hey, you haven't lived til you've heard "Refried Boogie."

Who is Warren Haynes?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Mickey Baker or Robert Randolph?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Warren Haynes has become the most in-demand guitarist in straight- ahead rock. This summer, he will be featured in Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers Band and Phil and Friends. He’ll spend the rest of time in the studio with the likes of John Paul Jones and John Entwistle."

this from google. I've never heard of him.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, none of these people can shred, and their tones all suck.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

...and much as I love the Alice Cooper band, Glen Buxton (no. 90) didn't even play on the "School's Out" and "Billion Dollar Babies" albums - that was Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, Bob Ezrin's "stunt guitarists".

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

James Burton ain't in there. The Rolling Stone doesn't know shit.
Hubert Sumlin but not Willie Johnson? Robert Johnson but not Tampa Red? What about Eddie Lang? Skip James had something goin' on guitar, don't you think? Oh yeah, the blues is just Robert Johnson and Buddy Guy...I mean anyone who knows anything knows that Snooks Eaglin is like the complete guitar player, which you can't say about Buddy Guy. Typical. I have got the blues, yes indeed.
I agree with Dr. C--Nile Rodgers.
Frank Zappa, the charlatan--I hate the way he played guitar.
Earl King, Snooks Eaglin, Guitar Slim--where are the New Orleans guys?
Lou Reed in any list of "greatest guitarists" is a joke. He does Lou Reed well, that's it.

I just wanna know where Zack Wylde is, and shit if fucking Jack White, and kurt cobain are on that list where is fuckign Josh Homme, he is much better than both of their asses. But seriously Zack Wylde isn't on the list which is fucking crazy, and Slash isn't on there either. I felt dumber after reading that list.

R B M J, Monday, 19 April 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

And Geordie Walker!

Where is he?

Aja (aja), Monday, 19 April 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Good to see those blues-rock legends michael bloomfield and paul kossoff on the list. I didn't see mick taylor though. i've seen kossoff mentioned as influences by those shredders zakk wylde and vai etc. he serves to show that great guitar is just as much about feeling and 1 great note than 100s of notes a second, which can sometimes have no feeling and no point. keep the blues alive!

Nick Rogerson, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman = this list is pointless.

Kurt Cobain? I love Nirvana, and Cobain was a decent guitar player, but he doesn't belong on the list. He was a great songwriter, but he wasn't reinventing the wheel with his guitar playing.

Jack White? C'mon!

They did put greg Ginn so it's maybe not completely idiotic, but...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Beck at #14 is a token placement, like they had to stick him in the top 20 somewhere. He was better than most, if not all, of the guitarists who are rated ahead of him.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
Slash is my all time fav. guitar player i no he's not THE best but he's better than jack fucking white and kurt cobain.

also, i no they were'nt huge, but ask many musicians and they'll mention new york dolls and johnny thunders as an influence. he was a great guitar player and influenced many and should get some recognition

joe perry should also be higher than 40 something

Ryan p., Saturday, 29 April 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

slash is my fav. guitar player ever and should be on the list. he's a million times better than jack fucking whit and kurt cobain. his co-gunner izzy stradlin should be there too.

they may not have made it that big, gut the new york dolls were a huge influence on many musicians, with guitar player johnny thunders the most important of them. he should def. be on the list (top 20 IMO).

joe perry should have done bettter than 48.
