waiting for three CDs to fill in the four tracks I don't have but otherwise finished, and when they arrive it's on.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

how's the book going, m?

geeta, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ssshhhh.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm about 7,000 words away from finishing, due Friday, and it's all mapped out, so it's going well. but I needed to do this to keep me from going insane.)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No arguments with this one! Good on ya.

Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz! What happened to them?

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

where's the ROCK? < / ceddy>

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"everybody (backstreet's back)" is more 98 isn't it?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel so 1997 for even wanting to add:
Bjork- Joga
Portishead- All Mine
White Town- Your Woman

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

white town's sorta more 96 (or at least if 'everybody (backstreet's back)' is 97, then 'your woman' is 96). add omc 'how bizarre' which is either 97 but in fact 96 or 96 but in fact 95 (chuck eddy knows - he was waaay ahead of the curve on 'how bizarre').

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a pretty personal selection--a good 70% of it was stuff I was into at the time, or was hearing a lot out. I started working at the First Avenue nightclub that year, and heard a lot of these things there, and it's also the year I started writing professionally, and that fall I started what was at that point the most serious relationship I'd been in after a handful of rather nice shorter ones. that's basically why I picked that year to do first, it was an extremely good year for me.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

also more (as in some) country music

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course it's a great compendilationium - you the mixtape masta matos! file all my remarks under 'this sundae's great - but it needs peanuts! and sprinkles! and pretzels! and little chocolate donuts!' instead of 'lame typical ilx nitpickery'

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Everybody" is '97 but hit big in '98. I did a LOT of research on these, so if I got any wrong it's only a small handful. plenty of singles that later appeared on albums in '98 ("Drinking in LA" for instance). and I wish I'd gotten in some more teenpop but I think Hanson, Spice Girls, Backstreets and All Saints is a good selection. I was also necessarily limited to my collection and a few things I picked up for this--I don't have net access at home, can't get it at work, and the Mac I use at the office to do MP3 mixes on won't allow me any downloading thanks to firewalls galore.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

almost included "That Don't Impress Me Much" (would've gone between "Walking on the Sun" and "Tubthumping") but I didn't have it. see d/l-ing thing above. (haha that's all I really know about country c. 1997!)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

and 1997's one of my favorite music years too - it was a great year for EVERYTHING (indie rock, top 40, hip-hop, etc.)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

all of the country i heard in 1997 was from 1950

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed, 1997 did kick ass

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

all the country I heard in 1950 was from 1997!

cinniblount and his timetraveling beagle bang bang (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"sock it 2 me" over "the rain (supa dupa fly")!

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

all the country I heard in 1997 was from the 20s and 30s (on Anthology of American Folk Music, reissued that year)

never partic. liked any but 1st Portishead, don't have "Your Woman," not much of a Bjork fan at all (though I enjoyed the last studio one OK). "Sock" over "The Rain" was for flow.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

no "mo money mo problems"?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

track 43

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

that second portishead album falls squarely into the category of albums that i think are GREAT but that i'd never bother trying to convince anyone else about. it's too dark and slow and dusty-crusty-musty to be worth your time. which is exactly why i loved it!

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

somehow spice girls shoulda been excepted from the 'one per artist' rule to accurately reflect the year or something

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

those are the reasons I like the first album, but to me Portishead (like Cypress Hill and a bunch of others I'm having trouble thinking of) kept doing the same thing as the first time except minus the inspiration and/or songwriting.

cinn, you mean "Wannabe"? that's '96

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

also if I wanted to be real strict about one-per-artist there wouldn't be so much Puffy, B.I.G., or Wyclef

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

you take out the Puffy, you take out the heart of ninety-seven!

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

matos, i'd expand your rule of diminishing returns to all of trip hop basically. completely agreed but there was something about "portishead" that got me. again not so much that i'd ever make anyone listen to it again

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, "wannabe"'s 96, but "say you'll be there" is 97 (if you're american)(ARE YOU AMERICAN MATOS? < / ashcroft spice> )

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I...I...I don't know what you're talking about

Benedict Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the nedheads and anglophylum are gonna bitch about spiritualized's absence (I'd probably have thrown some primal scream on there)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, you're right about trip-hop, which is why there isn't very much here. had a LOT of electronic stuff originally--wound up cutting about 25-30 tracks, most of which I'd just grabbed because I had them on various comps, and some of them were very good but I wanted to focus on what I knew well. a few exceptions to that--Smart Went Crazy, for instance, which is a really good song I was only exposed to pretty recently (it's on that Dischord 10th anniversary box) and only paid attention to when I was putting this together, but which felt right among the rest of it.

I actually liked Vanishing Point but didn't keep it very long, unfortunately. (a friend gave me his freebie, he didn't want it.) and I own no Spiritualized apart from the new one, which I was sent. I do sort of like them, though, and they played a good First Avenue show I worked that year. oh well.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

my fin de siecle alt-rock luvvin soul woulda definitely made room for foo fighters - "everlong"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man, KP & Envyi - "Shorty Swing My Way"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have any Foo Fighters CDs!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't either!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

then quit yer complaining! (haha I know you're not actually complaining)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

you totally need that radio mix of "my heart will go on" with all the titanic dialogue (do it for kogan)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You could always throw in Beck's "Deadweight"...

But holy crap that mix is looking great. I like the ending especially.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

#25: the remix, right?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space

Pierre, Sweden, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Spice Up Your Life is the best Spice Girls song anyway, what are you so hung up on, Blount??

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

no, the original, the remix is '98

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

the original is better anyway

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, good calls on 7 and 28. a number of choices where i would've picked the artist's other hit of that year, etc., but it's about your 97, not "the" 97, so whatever works. good idea, too, i wish i had the means to do something similiar.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos OTM about the original v. the remix (though I don't think either are that good). Dude! This CD frigging rocks, I want like all these tracks. The ATR track is a good choice...arrgh why is my computer jacked I want to download half these now before I forget etc.

I've had about 5 conversations in the past week or two that involve the song "How Bizarre". What does that indicate?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

! I doubt even Cornershop prefer the original.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Renegade Master remix rules them both.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

good for Cornershop!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I base all my opinions on what Cornershop thinks are best, actually.

Norman Cook is sort of like Jean Claude Van Damm. You watch him kill all these dudes with his feet, right, and you're like, yeah, rock on with yourself, fuuuuck. And you put on the JCVD marathon on Spike network or whatever and you're totally psyched for all this foot-murder-ninja-action. But like, you suddenly realize, yeah, this is awesome but it's like the exact same movie 408 times over with absolutely no changes whatsoever except maybe--and not even always--the nemesis is a different person. I mean, it's still cool, but only for like, one hour then you're like, dude I could be watching VH1 Classic, We Are the Eighties are on, let me flip on the guide, oh shit, it's The Magnificient Seven! Fuck JCVD!! That's Fatboy Slim.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

JCVD:Fatboy Slim::The Magnificent Seven:The Chemical Brothers, I think.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I bow to no one in my FBS luv, I just like the Cornershop on its own better.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm not saying FBS is bad. You are misunderstanding my point. I mean JCVD has his time and place too.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Similarly, I'm not saying a little doesn't go a long way, that would be a foolish thing to say. But damn, a little goes a long way.

http://bitchcakes.topcities.com/July4/dancing.jpg

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

who's saying you said otherwise?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No one, cowboy. No one at all.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(and as much as I enjoy seeing photos of my boyfriend, especially when he is on holiday for two weeks and I cannot see him, I'm not sure what your point is there, Andrew, esp. since while I'm not sure of Miccio's opinion, I know Tom agrees with me on Fatboy Slim because this conversation came up while listening to Renegade Master!)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

My point seems pretty clear to the people in that photo, who are joined in their love of Fatboy Slim.

And I think we've both retreated to where our points can coexist.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

whew! glad that's over!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, cos my point totally changed, Andrew! Are you planning on doing that all day today?

Why does no one discuss Spice Up Your Life, wtf :(

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha ts: love of the Fatboy vs. love of the incredible amounts of booze. This seems to go hand in hand actually; Fatboy Slim is totally better if you are blitzed.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what isn't?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha ts: appreciation of the anglo-saxon attitudes being struck to my songs vs bitterness that no-one danced like that to yours.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

how's the book going, m?

What'za book about?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

jess OTM.

??? haha Raggett even danced to my songs, WTF. I put $20 in that jukebox. Andrew, I'm just going to point out that you're really getting my goat today over something else and stop being nasty you on on thread, sorted?

Alex what happened with yr book anyway.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sign 'O' the Times, the Prince album, part of Continuum's 33 1/3 series of short books on classic albums (modeled on the BFI Film Classics series). I've mentioned it plenty on the boards so I thought you might've caught that already, Alex. (and no, I won't be posting as you in jest again.)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(but it was fun the one time I did!)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, we're totally celebrating this Friday by seeing Nigel Peppercock and Teen Cthulhu at the all-ages Vera Project. We can get blitzed on Sprite and Kit-Kats.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

email me specs, might be busy but will try and squeeze it in

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex what happened with yr book anyway.

It exists solely on the astral plane at the moment. Met with an agent a few months back, who was a perfectly nice gent, but we just didn't really see eye to eye on any proposed project. He was looking for the next Dave Eggers (which I very assuredly am not).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sign 'O' the Times, the Prince album, part of Continuum's 33 1/3 series of short books on classic albums (modeled on the BFI Film Classics series).

Wow. Sounds promising. Good luck with that. Please send up a flair when it's published.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, i can't really think of a better release date for a prince book.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

unless the gov't dedicates a holiday to pure animal fucking rather than love

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what you're all forgetting here is that the book is going to SUCK SUCK SUCK

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and that this thread is about the MP3 mix I made! come on, more Fatboy Slim and Spice Girls posts! I mean, no one's called me on my noninclusion of "Magic Carpet Ride" yet, wtf?!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"help the aged" came out in 97

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Usher!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So did "This is Hardcore" which is a better single but not nearly as fun.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

dem 2's "destiny" also came out in late '97.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

nine inch nail's "the perfect drug"

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

roni size & reprazent - "share the fall"

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah right I'd include Nine Inch Nails, especially that song!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

already have "Brown Paper Bag" and used only two heroin house tracks on purpose

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"this is hardcore" single released march 16, 1998 < / nyah nyah nyah>

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that nine inch nails song is great!

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice work, Matos.

But -- Is "The State I Am In" (Tigermilk=1996?) better than any B&S songs from If You're Feeling Sinister (1997)? Is "Iron Man" better than any Stereolab songs from Dots and Loops? Is "Anagrama" better than any Sonic Youth from A Thousand Leaves? Or is this another case of you not having the proper CDs to work with?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm just bitter my 1996 thread hardly got any love.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, there weren't enough tracks I knew on it. But only because I was listening to mostly indie rock in 1996.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(Which of course explains why I'm now talking about Belle & Sebastian, haha.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I'd have liked to see on this mix: "The Argument" by the Sea and Cake.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: "Criminal," Fiona Apple. "Battle of Who Could Care Less," Ben Folds Five.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I had no idea "The State I Am In" was on Tigermilk; that kind of fucks things. I'd taken it from the Dog on Wheels EP, which is 1997. And If You're Feeling Sinister is 1996 so wouldn't have counted anyway. Hmmm. I don't care for Dots and Loops and like "Iron Man" as a throwaway instrumental, which is generally what Stereolab are to me--a throwaway instrumental band. And A Thousand Leaves came out summer 1998.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yay the version on Dog on Wheels is an alternate sez AMG so all's well yay!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, yeah, you're right about A Thousand Leaves -- I just remembered.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(I do like all those songs you picked, btw -- even if I'd have picked different ones.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What year did "Horny" by Mousse T come out? Or "Feel It" by the Tamperer? Why do I think I'm a year off with every track? Because I am?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Horny" was '98.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbo, i liked your '96 mix!

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

plug remix of "the perfect drug" sums up a lot of my 1997

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess: since I have not actually finished making the set--and some of the trax can be reimported at 128 instead of 192--I'm going to try and get "To Shape the Future," which I'm playing right now, in there (between Source Direct and "Bad Ass!" which is perfect).

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I forgot how bad 1997 was.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it least it took 115 answers before the predictable "sarcasm" started.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

one post per song!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I fully endorse "Sock It 2 Me" over "Supa Dupa Fly," though my Sleater-Kinney would probably be "Dance Song '97."

One of the "traditional" songs from The Oblivians Play 9 Songs with Mr. Quintron deserves some love.

Some "country" (folk, roots, whatever) stuff from 97 you might consider: Kim Richey (heard record that year was way better than subsequent records), Freedy Johnston (Never Here had some great songs, especially the one about the shoplifter and the one about the pregnancy scare), Bottle Rockets ("Indianapolis" was from a 97 album, though may have been released earlier as a single), and especially the Jimmie Rodgers tribute album from that year, which is full of great stuff.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

And is "Not Gon' Cry" technically 96? If not that should obviously be the Mary J., but I trust you wouldn't make that oversight.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Not Gon' Cry" is 96--was on the Waiting to Exhale s/t. the Rodgers tribute was considered but I didn't pull it out in time and ended up cutting a LOT out for final selection purposes--most of it electronic.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

also, no jazz; I had three songs (by Arcana, Ornette Coleman + Joachim Kuhn, and David S. Ware) in the running but decided to pull for space and coherency

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd lament the lack of Company Flow, but the two best songs on Funcrusher ("8 Steps to Perfection"; "Vital Nerve") are '96 singles anyways. "Last Good Sleep"? "Info Kill II"?

I know it's E-VIL BRITPOP, but Supergrass' "In It For the Money" is a good rousing thing. And if yr so inclined, you could throw in Future Bible Heroes' "Real Summer", David Holmes' "Rusty Yates", (DJ) Z-Trip's "Rockstar"* and (yeah, you're hearing this from Patrin) Jay-Z's "Streets is Watchin'".

*fairly sure it's '97

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

who said Britpop was e-vil? I put opened it Verve-Dandy Warhols*-Blur, for chrissakes!

*yeah they're from Portland, Oregon. big deal.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

my dark dnb pick for 97 is 'piper' by jonny l although 'to shape the future' (remix) (not the 2002 remix) is great, too. i think that's 98 though. the nu yorican soul track included was on constant repeat in my 97. that and the 4 hero remix of 'i am the black gold of the sun'. genius...

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

only had "Piper" in the Grooverider remix, unfortunately

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

that's good, too! but yeah, the original would be required. and grooverider's remix of 'share the fall' oh gosh

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

who said Britpop was e-vil? I put opened it Verve-Dandy Warhols*-Blur

That third song is evil incarnate!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the glands - "two dollar wine"!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(matos, have you heard the first single on arcola yet? the b-side is cut-up of 'uptown' by the purple one. illicit and delicious :)

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

erykah badu - "tyrone"!!!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

lauryn hill - "the sweetest thing"

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

imani coppola - "legend of a cowgirl"!!!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

natalie imbruglia - "torn"
jimmy ray - "are you jimmy ray?" (I think this came out in 97)

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

blount you disgust me

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you just proved J0hn's point somehow

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

depeche mode - "it's no good"

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no 311 ?? - shock!!

that was like junior year of high school right there in that all mixed up song, hahaha. i guess you don't like chem bros but "block-rockin beats" was so the-essence-of-97 as was that paula cole -cowboy song, i would include it but remember, i'm mentally ill. it was still better than sarah mclachlan's "sweet surrender" or whatever it was called

"torn" was '98 - ew ew ew ew ew ew ew the worst year of my life. actually '97 is close behind in that regard and this thread takes me back, oh i'm so glad i came out alive; if i hear 1/4th of these songs i start getting nauseous, and it has nothing to do w/ the music at all

no republica ?? shock!!!

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

also what about aqua

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"torn" more 97 than "everybody (backstreet's back)" (it's 97 like "wonderwall"'s 95). "all mixed up"'s 95 (release) or 96 (hit). republica's 96 also.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"barbie girl"'s very necessary matos

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't "Not Tonight" w/ Lil' Kim and the rest this year? Forgive me for thinking that track is crucial.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that was 2000?...'97 was the Ladies Night remake kim did i think

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

make yr own already cinnifuck!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

cinnifuck! oh dear lord

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't get the phrase "sprinkles sprinkles sprinkles!" in a Wicked Witch of the West voice out of my head now!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And what with all this Fatboy Slim talk WHERE WHERE WHERE is "Going Out of My Head" or "The Weekend Starts Here" or "Santa Cruz" or "Next to Nothing" or hey wasn't Better Living Through Chemistry subsequently overlooked post-"Rockafella Skank" despite being really fucking good?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"PUNK TO FUNK" GODDAMMIT!!!!!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(pops valium)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

1996, motherfucker.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

'96 Skint, '97 Astralwerks. Well, that explains that. Fuck.

Skint did give "Going Out of My Head" its first single release in April '97, right?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(I fudged on '72 by including music from A Clockwork Orange -- a '71 film -- because the soundtrack LP wasn't released until the following year. I CHEATED, YOU CAN TOO)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

no the album came out UK 96. hahaha I do not cheat because I am better than you < /total fucking asshole>

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have put some Company Flow and maybe some Fondle 'Em as well as Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars" and something from Smog's Red Apple Falls on there but shit, it's close to perfect. I particularly like the inclusion of "Hey Hey You Say." Can't wait to see '98.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

JIMMY RAY IS URGENT AND KEY HE IS MY FAVORITE MUSICAL ARTIST EVER MAYBE NOT BUT DUDE SERIOUSLY I STILL HAVE THE SINGLE.

OOPS i actually didn't mean to type that in all caps. My computer has been jacked and I'm trying to rebuild it right now and forgot to turn off caps. But it looks better if I'm screaming hysterifcally about Jimmy Ray

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)
