Now that "On The Beach" has finally seen its CD release, what is the most "canonical" release currently not available on CD

You will still have to search used stores to find a copy of Traveling Wilburys' "Vol. 1" or Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue", although both have previously been available on CD.

Are there any (even slightly) "canonical" albums still not available on CD?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

AZ's "Doe Or Die".

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

beefheart 'lick me decals...'

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that on 'Beefheart goes Oop North?'

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a pub songs cover album. All on banjo. Recorded in a commune in the Lancashire desert.

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe Neil Young's "Time Fides Away" is still out-of-print. Surprised nobody mentions that.

'George Formby Salutes The Magic of Captain Beefheart'

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I have a feeling Frank Sidebottom might have actually done that.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I can think of plenty (buckingham nicks' buckingham nicks, elvis' having fun with elvis on stage, nat adderly's soul zodiac, pylon's gyrate, wildman fischer's an evening with wildman fischer, peter grudzien's the unicorn, alvaro pena-rojas' drinking my own sperm, wanna buy a bridge?) but most of these are pretty easy to find or d/l.

The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe if gail zappa understood her husband better she might let an evening with wild man fischer be reissued. as it stands now, she thinks it's a blight on his legacy (which is completely wrong -- if anything, his support of fischer and beefheart are some of the best things he ever did).

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

my copy of an evening with wildman fischer has ancient 60's-era pot seeds in the middle of it.i keep them there as a memento.
um, but anyway, i was gonna say ? & the Mysterians-96 Tears. i paid a lot for a nice copy and i don't regret that, but it should be available.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Buckingham Nicks is due for imminent release on CD, along with remastered/special editions of Fleetwood Mac, Rumors and Tusk. (The latter two being 2-disc sets!). They were slated for release last month, but they seem to have been pushed back. Rhino's doing them, if I remember correctly.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

HUGE DITTO to ? & the Mysterians

holy moly - is Tusk gonna have outtakes, doodads, etc.?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that buckingham nicks album is wonderful. i wonder if they have extra stuff from that era that never saw the light of day. i'd love to hear it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

that's 50 australian, and it was the gatefold 1st press after all. but i might have thought twice knowing a reish was imminent

who is "On the Beach" by?? how come people around here never mention the artist when they name songs and albums?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Thursday, 9 October 2003 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it's by neil young and you can buy it on vinyl for 5 bucks at any used record store anywhere.just like you could for the last 20 years.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 9 October 2003 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

although it's available, "there's a riot going on" is in bad need of a remastering job and the original american flag cover art.

holy moly - is Tusk gonna have outtakes, doodads, etc.?

Yup, It's my understanding that Rumors and Tusk will both have a whole second disc of outtakes, doodads and etc. Be still, my beating heart. Plus the first Tusk disc will finally have an uncropped version of 'Sara'. IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 9 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Supposedly "The Homosexuals' Record" is coming out on ReR this month as a CD! OH SO GOOD.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 9 October 2003 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about "canonical", but this is what I want.

Flipper- Gone Fishin'
The Effigies- For Ever Grounded (Actually all three albums released on CD would be great, as I have the other two on LP.)

I'd like to have "Lick My Decals" and the first two Shellac 7"s on CD, but I am not holding my breath on either.

earlnash, Thursday, 9 October 2003 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Two which definitely need imminent re-circulation: John Cale's Music For A New Society and Scott Walker's Climate Of Hunter.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 9 October 2003 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and amazingly (or not) Buckley's Starsailor cannot currently be got on CD.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 9 October 2003 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

David Bowie - David Live

A. Person, Thursday, 9 October 2003 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a commonly available release, person.

willem (willem), Thursday, 9 October 2003 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, having just checked Amazon you're right, although it's pretty hard to get hold of and I've never seen it in a record store. One of the great recorded live performances in my opinion.

A. Person, Thursday, 9 October 2003 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello, I have Climate of hunter on cd if you want a copy. Mail me offline.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 9 October 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Johnson, it looks like you can get "One Nation Underground" here.

If anyone's really desperate for "Lick My Decals Off Baby" or "Starsailor" on CD then drop me a line 'cos I might just be able to help....

< rant mode >wtf are Rhino playing at not having these two acknowledged classics available anyway, eh? Three years they've supposedly been working on a re-release of Decals to my knowledge! How long does it fuckin' take, eh? Wake up, stop fuckin' about with lovingly and lavishly produced limited edition "Handmade" releases of Wild Man fuckin' Fischer, live recordings of Tiny fuckin' Tim and "Theodore Bikel's Treasury Of Yiddish Theatre And Folk Songs" and get yer priorities straight and yer fuckin' act together f'fuck's sake!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

''Lick my decals'' is available on LP though i didn't know that until i saw it in a rec shop.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Two which definitely need imminent re-circulation: John Cale's Music For A New Society and Scott Walker's Climate Of Hunter.

Listen to the man Carlin, he talk sense. I second "Starsailor". I was lucky enough to pick up "'Til the Band Comes In" before it disappeared altogether. Why is Mrs. Zappa digging her heels in over "Bat Chain Puller" and Wild Man Fischer?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

That's probably the 2000 180gm audiophile vinyl release from Scorpio Records (catalogue number RS 6420) Julio. No longer in print and getting increasingly scarce again I believe unfortunately.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe Gail Zappa has said she's trying to respect Don's wishes by not releasing Bat Chain Puller while he's still alive....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ok stewart (emailed you btw).

saw 'music for a new society' in canada last year but didn't pick it up bcz i had lots in the bag already and did think it was in print in the uk. when i got back didn't see it anywhere bah.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

... and obviously the early Kraftwerk albums, an official release would be nice even if an official acknowledgment from Ralf and Florian that they even existed is perhaps asking too much.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe Gail Zappa has said she's trying to respect Don's wishes by not releasing Bat Chain Puller while he's still alive....

That's certainly not what I've heard - I was under the impression Beefheart wanted them released and the Zappa Estate was refusing. Why else would Beefheart provide poor-quality, second generation recordings of BCP to be released as "Dust Sucker"? (In case you're tempted - don't buy).

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Flipper's Public Flipper Limited and Gone Fishin' should be available on CD. Every American yoot currently listening to Good Charlotte needs to hear Flipper.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Please God, Starsailor is the one that I'm holding out for (I might have to email you about that Stewart!).

Other than that... Metal Box perhaps? Despite the mountain of superfluous Bill Laswell product out there, I could definitely use some Last Exit. And there's also a veritable ton of great Flying Nun records that it'd be really nice to have around in the land of the living once more.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Have to aggree with 'Time Fades Away'. Though Neil hates it, it's ine if his best albums. 'Don't Be Denied' and 'Last Dance' are classics.

But the biggest omission on CD has to be Bob Seger's first few albums (ie, the "before he was shit" years).

Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, Mongrel, Noah, Back In 72 and Smokin' OPs are all unavailable on CD. Possibly why in the Detroit garage scene Bob's so verlooked even Ted Nugent gets a better press.

Martin Horsfield, Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably not canonical, but it's great nonetheless:
T-Bone Burnett's "Trap Door" E.P.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the db's "Like This"

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

... and any number of great local Boston/Providence albums from the 80s: Lifeboat, The Flies, Lou Miami and the Kozmetix, etc.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"I was under the impression Beefheart wanted them released and the Zappa Estate was refusing."

I have it on extremely good authority that Don very definitely doesn't want any of his material re-issued.

He's refused to enter into any sort of dialogue with several people who've been writing or trying to write his bigoraphy / their own autobographies - including former band members Bill "Zoot Horn Rollo" Harkleroad and John "Drumbo" French - or have anything to do with any of the recent reissues in any way whatsoever.

Apart from anything else his reputation as a musician is (for reasons I can't even begin to fathom) viewed as something of a handicap to the development of his current career as an artist.

"Why else would Beefheart provide poor-quality, second generation recordings of BCP to be released as "Dust Sucker"?"

Lest there be any misunderstanding on the subject (and I appreciate that the liner notes are extremely and deliberately misleading on the subject!) "Dust Sucker" is very definitely unauthorised, unlicensed, un-endorsed and un....uh-legal (sorry slipped into Dubya mode for a moment!) BOOTLEG and has absolutely nothing to do with either Don or any member of The Magic Band past ir present. Furthermore neither the legal owner of the material (The Zappa Family Trust) nor any of the musicians who performed on those recordings are receiving any royalties from it's release.

In fact, I'm extremely sorry to say, the unwitting source of the recording used on that release was almost certainly myself.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

dB's has been issued awhile back.

Up til a couple of weeks ago, I'd say Judee Sill's two Asylum LPs, but Rhino just did 'em. So, Lou Christie's Paint America Love.

harveyw (harveyw), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick B: "Metal Box" is widely available on CD as "Second Edition" (the name it was given when the initial run of 3 x 12" 45 rpm singles in a metal cannister ran out and it was replaced by 2 x normal 12" 33rpm albums in a normal cardboard gatefold sleeve!) as well as in a slightly rarer version under it's original name which comes in a dinky little replica of the original cannister - try Amazon.co.uk!

Oh and please feel free to e-mail me about Starsailor!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Metal Box" is widely available on CD as "Second Edition"

Eeep. Well that I never even knewed or suspecticated. Who'da thunk it? My mistake, I'd never really picked up that thing and examined it before. Thanks for putting me right.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 9 October 2003 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus,

This just floated to the surface out of the silt on the river-bed of my memory: apparently when Revenant were putting together the "Grow Fins" box set they approached The Zappa Family Trust about the possibility of including some or all of "Bat Chain Puller" as well as a track called Hoboism, which featured just Don and Denny Walley, that was recorded while they were in the studio recording the album, but Gail refused.

Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The db's "Stands for Decibels/Repercussion" was re-released, but not "Like This."
At least, I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 9 October 2003 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The first Flying Lizards album comes to mind... how somebody can reissue _The Secret Dub Life_ and not this one is beyond me.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 9 October 2003 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I can think of several jazz records:

* "Show Stopper" and "Renaissance Man" by Jamaaladeen Tacuma
* "The Two Headed Freap" and "Sweet Revival" by Ronnie Foster
* "The Essence of Mystery" and "Funky Snakefoot" by Alphonse Mouzon

..etc. A lot of good fusion records have never had a proper re-release because of the bad name fusion got after mid-seventies.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 9 October 2003 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get 1st and 2nd edition as a 2-for-£8 at Amazon. Which uis a bargain.

I'd like Sonic Boom's "Spectrum" CD release. And "Now Ain't The Time For Your Tears".

Stuart, is that Starsailor offer open to all comers..?

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Thursday, 9 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

In fact, I'm extremely sorry to say, the unwitting source of the recording used on that release was almost certainly myself.

Oops!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to slander the fragrant Gail Z in that case. As for Don's thought processes - well no-one's ever been able to fathom those, for good or ill.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stuart, is that Starsailor offer open to all comers..?"

Well, it's open to everyone who takes the trouble to spell my bleedin' name right, certainly!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, how difficult is it to spell Stuart Osbourne?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the fact that some stuff isn't available.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

scott walker's "climate of hunter" has been out of print for some time, although i nabbed a copy once upon a blue moon.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like stuff that i think its shit to become unavailable.

'aida' by derek bailey is another item that is v difficult to find on CD (though its available on LP, i think).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"I like the fact that some stuff isn't available."

Absolutely - if everything was available all the time there'd be nothing to look forward to, so e.g. I wouldn't be sitting here waiting for that second Rubble boxset like a small exciteable child on Christmas Eve!

Some things shouldn't ever be unavailable 'though (or at least, if they are unavailable there should be strongly-worded articles in the papers every day and leading items on the news every night and reports on Panorama and embarrassing questions being asked in Parliament until the minister reponsible is forced to resign in disgrace) and "Starsailor" and especially "Lick My Decals Off Baby" both fall very firmly into this category!

Of course I can afford to be a smug bastard because I've already got my copies of both items, in preparation for such a shortage, stockpiled safely in the nuclear fallout shelter in the basement of my house.

Oh and what's more, before you get any funny ideas, be warned: I also have a CD writer and I'm not afraid to use it!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

canonical = cult in this case, huh?

Does demonstration tapes count? it was reissued on CD but it's impossible to get

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't have to be cult; can (in fact debateably should) be positively mainstream:

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I am now going to go away and look up "Doctionary"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

We're using definition #4 though, right?

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I figure we're also using definition # 1 (but substituting "ILM" for "a church council") and definition # 3 a. (but substituting "records" for "books")!

Out of interest, can anyone suggest anything that actually fits definition # 5?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 October 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think much of this is canonical at all -- maybe Beefheart, but most of it is cult. Walker's COH is a fascinating listen, but it's only partly successful and, thus, hardly canonical. Name of This Band is very good, but not even essential, much less in the canon. David Live? Uhhh, even if it WERE unavailable, it would only be in the canon of only the most Bowiephile of listeners. As a general rule, they probably aren't a lot of canonical live albums.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 9 October 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmh, thanx to a friendly twist of fate I walked home a coupla hours ago tonite with the cd-r copies of "Ralf and Florian" and Org's "Tone Float", and I'm listenin' to the former right now... No, of course decent reissues would be welcome - but due to the above mentioned suspicions it's hardly likely they'll come out, innit?)

but The Name of This Band is Talking Heads has always mystified me -- some sort of coverup ? i like it more than Stop Making Sense

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

g - "demonstration tapes" will be properly reissued one day. you *don't* want the Royal Mint reissue - the quality is extremely poor next to the original vinyl. when i eventually get around to remastering my copy of the vinyl i'll drop you a line.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay!

peter grudzien's the unicorn

It was released on CD recently, but I don't know if it's still in print.

in light of all this starsailor talk...has anyone got blue afternoon perchance?

(I thought it was derive from the Arabic "kanun" but maybe it got into Arabic by way of Greek? Quite possible.)

Aaaah, music obsessives - is there nothing we don't know between us?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 10 October 2003 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Another vote for Starsailor. And my def of canonical in this thread = if people knew about it, it would be really in/famous.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe I sold my 'Lick My Decals' CD years ago for a few quid - overrated Trout Mask out-takes imo. I've also got 'Starsailor' - I'm sure I've seen it on countless occasions in England, first-hand and not on import. I think I paid less than 10 pounds for it about 10 yrs ago.

freedom dupont, Friday, 10 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello? If anyone's still reading, what about The Residents? I've never even seen a copy of either Third Reich'n'Roll or The Commercial Album and while probably more 'cult' than 'canonical' the cultish has it's own canons, no?

Jamie, Friday, 10 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamie, you can get both those Residents titles from Euro Ralph!

Oh I wish I hadn't gone there now - I've just found myself coveting a copy of "Eskimo" in 5.1 Surround Sound!

Wow. Cheers.

I have it and it's my favourite Bum Tickly, sorry, Tim Buckley album

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 10 October 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone seems to be missing what I think Geir's point was or at least should have been, which was that On the Beach had NEVER been released on CD before (though I think there had been bootlegs). So what canonical (or cult) albums have still NEVER seen the light of day on CD. I said No New York, which I think is probably the best example. The Japanese import is a bootleg, right?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 11 October 2003 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I was under the impression that the Japanese import was legit.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 11 October 2003 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of Esther Phillips catalog on both CTI and Mercury is not on CD. This includes such excellent and offbeat albums as Performance and Black Eyed Blues. From a Whisper to a Scream was once on CD but is long out of print, and What a Diff'rence a Day Makes was just issued, but I believe the rest has never seen CD issue at all.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 11 October 2003 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, just thought of another: "An Evening with Wild Man Fischer"!

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 11 October 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Alternative Tentacles compilation, Let Them Eat Jellybeans.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 October 2003 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was mainly asking about "canonical" albums though. There are too many cult albums out there (probably about 1000 times as many as even slightly "canonical" ones)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 11 October 2003 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "Pacific Ocean Blue" isn't really canonical. Sure, it's Beach Boys, but it's a pretty obscure album. Although I guess it was featured in that made-for-TV movie, so I dunno...

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 11 October 2003 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you didn't forget me, george? thank you in advance. i don't remember what you wanted from me though. or are you wishless happy with the music you have already? an old cd list of mine is here.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 11 October 2003 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

on ILM the line of 'canonical' and 'cult' is blurred. I'm v happy abt this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 11 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe Sloan's Twice Removed is out of print, which is weird since it's their best album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots of 70's Richard Thompson records aren't available on CD. Are they canonical? What does canonical mean anyway?

Keith Watson (kmw), Saturday, 11 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

canonical means that the poster thinks it's worth getting.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "Pacific Ocean Blue" isn't really canonical. Sure, it's Beach Boys, but it's a pretty obscure album

It did make the Virgin Top 1000 in the last Larkin-book. Also, it was featured among the 600 albums picked by Mojo staff for "The Mojo Collection". So it isn't completely "uncanonical"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 11 October 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it is completely "unconanical" though!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Patio, Tatay and Bwyd Time should all be re-issued NOW. I swear I danced around the room when I heard that there were plans afoot to re-issue them, but that was months and months ago. And still I wait.

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't "canonical" mean the sort of thing q or mojo or ucunt magazine bangs on abt all the time?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i would have thought all the Alternative Ts material would never see the light of day. i would have thought it was some of the most unacceptable or maybe just risqué material and so just "dangerous" ? in a category of it's own anyway, whatever the various releases merits.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
I'd like to add to the "canonical" list, the Ed Sanders classics, "Ed Sanders Truck Stop" & "Beer Cans On The Moon". Also the early 80's UK compilations(cassette only), "Methods Of Dance" and "NME/Rough Trade". There's also the great UK 12"-EP, "This Is Radio Clash". I've only seen one cut from this EP on CD. There's more but my memory is slow right now. :)

DaleK, Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Complete Buddy Holly

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 25 December 2003 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Elvis Costello - King of America, although one of days Rhino will rereleasing it.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Thursday, 25 December 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

according to Revenant, Mrs. Zappa wanted a ridiculous sum for the Bat Chain Puller recordings (my mind blanks on if it was $75,000 or $500,000 (mostly because similar attempts at compiling Van Dyke Parks singles had that price tag also) but the absurdity of the amount is made nevertheless).
although both of the above need a real release, i will insist that Judy Henske and Jerry Yester's _Farewell, Aldebaran_ needs a digital release.

Beta (abeta), Saturday, 27 December 2003 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't "King Of America" available?

I guess it is next up in the re-release program then (already got the double one from Demon here anyway, but I didn't realise it was completely deleted)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 27 December 2003 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Geir it is currently deleted although it is up next on the Rhino rerelease list along with Almost Blue and Kojak Variety. Who knows when though as this project seems like it has been going on for years.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Puzzle by the Mandrake Memorial?

pete s, Sunday, 28 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, "Bat Chain Puller" is up there.

Joe Tex's "Buying a Book" you can't get either.

Sly's "Riot" is available w/o orig. graphix and with shitty sound...the most egregious example I know of bad reissue/complete corporate indiff to art. Matthew Katz owns the rights to the great first Moby Grape LP and so it costs $25 or something, which is also criminal.

The Miracles's "City of Angels" is available but not in its original form, and it's the greatest concept album of the '70s.

And Beefheart's "Lick My Decals Off" isn't in print on CD, which is nuts, seeing as how it's his finest work. I don't see why someone couldn't boil "Trout Mask" down to 37 minutes and tack on the complete "Decals" for a true bargain and a great intro to Van Vliet at his zenith. Keep the orig "TMR" in print for those who need to hear "China Pig" or "Hair Pie Bake 1."

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Sunday, 28 December 2003 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Posted Sunday, 25 January, 2004 by francey
Twenty years after its original release on double vinyl, the Talking Heads live album "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads" will finally be released on CD. Chris Frantz confirmed the release of a remastered edition by Rhino "in the near future" on the Tom Tom Club message board yesterday.

'an evening with wild man fischer'

'';-)''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

This isn't remotely canonical and isn't even supposed to be all that great but I'd like if someone somewhere could reissue David Ackles' "Five and Dime"... for completion sake if nothing else... after all they eventually got round to reissuing Judee Sill didn't they?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Avalanches - Since I Left You

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice to hear that TNOTBITH will finally be reissued - that's probably my favourite Talking Heads record. That said, the double LP will suffice for me.

I've been listening to Neil Young's Time Fades Away a lot lately. It's really quite great, innit? Too bad Neil doesn't want to reissue it.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Thursday, 5 February 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I cant beleive no one has mentioned one of the greatest experimental pop/folk/rock/country/bluegrass/avantgarde/dixieland/jazz/blues albums of all time hoboken saturday night - the insect trust. I have a copy dubbed off vinyl onto cd.

walter nervik, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'd like to hear the Insect Trust someday.

The dB's' 'Like This' was only in print on CD for a year or so in '88-'89. Shame, that. Great record.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think James Blood Ulmer's "Freelancing" has made it to cd yet.

Oh yeah, what about Monitor, s/t. Or Nervous Gender, "Music from Hell."

no opinion, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I still miss Diamanda Galas' 2nd album and - skip the canonical here - Concrete Sox' Your Turn Next.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say that the first four StreetSounds Electro albums were pretty damned canonical...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say first eight.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Not That Chuck, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Great sentences of our time that indicate one has lost touch with reality #47.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always been curious about Insect Trust, too! I'd also like the debuts of Bizarros, Black Pearl, Waitresses, Lester Bangs and the Delinquents, Jimi Hendrix' Nine To The Universe and Ornette Coleman's "This Is Our Music."

As for TNOTBITH being released: Yay!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

How bout Nick Lowe? Both "Pure Pop for Now People" and "Labour of Lust" have been oop for a long time and are considered landmarks of their time.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 13 March 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. John's "Gris Gris" is available on the Collectors Choice label, who also put out his "Babylon".

I got my copy through Forced Exposure.

earlnash, Saturday, 13 March 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't the Nick Lowes pretty easily accessible as Demon imports?

As for Ulmer, 'Odyssey' was on CD at one point but has been out of print for the past four or five years. Shame!

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 13 March 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

More things I wish were in print:

The AuPairs- Playing with a Different Sex
The Mekons- Quality of Mercy Is Not Strnen
Robyn Hitchcock- Black Snake Diamond Role
Seefeel- Quique, Succour, Ch-Vox, & Polyfusia
Slowdive- Pygmalion
Bark Psychosis- Independency
Third Eye Foundation- Semtex

earlnash, Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Seefeel- Succour

- I've got this, is it difficult to find?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It took me a while to find "Succour" the first time and it was like $18 bucks on CD. I had it and "Ch-Vox" and they got ripped out of my car, along with Monolake's "Hong Kong" and two Black Dog CDs, all of which are expensive to find replacements.

So to add:

Monolake- Hong Kong
Black Dog- Bytes
Black Dog- Spanners

earlnash, Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Scratch "Succour" and "Bytes" -- Forced Exposure have both of those and have Black Dog's "Parallel", which I could never find beforehand.

Hackamore Brick-One Kiss Leads to Another

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And rightfully so, of course.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Being from Holland myself I can assure you that all albums by Gore have seen a official cd-release. Alas, they are all out of print now...

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Gore's Wrede was released on CD; I have it. Bought it from them when I saw them live in the early 90s, in fact. I'm not sure why the Hackamore Brick never got a rerelease. It seems like One Way did a lot of old Kama Sutra stuff when they got ahold of the label, but for whatever reason they skipped over that one. Great record, though.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

also

4 hero - in rough territory

didn't know that Gore and Chrome had had their cd issue, anyway i hope they re-reissue soon, those are classics.
The Ornette Coleman Impulse lp and the ECM stuff i mentioned has sure never be on CD, my hope is in Japan, recently there reissued the ECM album of the Improvison Music Company bu Baley. And why Rephlex who issued on CD a lot of trash not doing a cd issue of the best Luke Vibert album since Throbbing Pouch (also oop) is too strange (yeah, they love vinil, only vinyl is true, shit like that...)

about Starsailor i have the olc CD reissue, but is mastered like crap and has index error coupling two songs in one. Wait for a rightly remastered reissue, after Rhino (even if I love them) find time after re-re-re-re-reissuing Drama by Yes.

also The Stooges need remastering but this is another tread...

ciao da francesco

LP got to number 1.

Never been released on CD.

Acid Mothers Temple, La Novia

F/i's split with boy dirt car is crucial if only for "trauma at the beach"

ok, looks like you might have both!

In 2000, Lexicon Devil released Space Mantra/Boy Dirt Car Split LP, which contained two recordings -- the band's first full-length, Space Mantra (originally released on RRR in 1988), and its side of a split LP with Boy Dirt Car (which was released by RRR in 1986) -- by F/I on one compact disc. ~ Tim Sendra

Yeah, I just realized this. Duh.
Trauma at the Beach is an awesome song!

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

boy dirt car's side is mostly grumbling electronics, but there is one great "song" where dan kubinski starts screaming "HE TORE OUT HIS EYES" over and over in his die kreuzen voice

speaking of canonical moments in music history

The Beatles' "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" seems to fit the original premise.

LP got to number 1.

Because it was by The Beatles. It sounds like crap, to say the least. Unless a flock of screaming young 60s girls are your thing...

Well, since we've wandered from the realm of the canonical, I would support a CD issue of:

Gibson Bros. - Dedicated Fool

but ain't holdin' my breath...

Outside the canon, a lot of the albums I have been longing the most for have been reissued by various labels in the Red Cherry and Demon families. Or by Repertoire. But if an album is being left to a reissue specialist label to reissue (not counting Rhino here, mind you), it can hardly be said to be canonical. With a few exceptions like "Odessey & Oracle" maybe.

And "More Than A New Discovery" (Laura Nyro) and "Gonna Take A Miracle" (Laura Nyro & Labelle), both reissued by Rev-Ola.

Her two best-known albums are still on Sony.

The entire Swans back catalogue is a mess and needs uniform CD reissues. Unlikely to happen though.

But if an album is being left to a reissue specialist label to reissue, .. it can hardly be said to be canonical.

It's not always that the label cbb, it's more often than not that the label in question closed down for business.

.. or that the rights lapsed and reverted to the artist.

Wharrabout that Morrissey guy? Now he's rectivated MajorMinor for his latest reissue.

Bona Drag. Originally on EMI, a compilation, canonical to Mozfans, out on a reactivated label, um, bzzt.

The first Queens of The Stone Age album (which was on cd) is still oop. Used copies start @ $48 on Amazon.
