We have had individual threads about some of the standouts, but are there any others that are either excellent and haven't gotten a mention, or so bad that they shouldn't be mentioned?

(We should have one of these for the DJ Kicks series as well!)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the bugz and mayer ones are excellent; best mixes of the year, maybe.

the series itself seems middlebrow as hell and some of the other participants fill me with fear but the results justify on this evidence. (all i've heard.)

mohammed abba (dubplatestyle), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the John Peel one is kind of fun but probably not what we're really talking about here.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish "middlebrow" were my greatest fear

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

did i say "greatest"?

mohammed abba (dubplatestyle), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going to represent here for the Bent and Jacques Lu Cont mixes though they've been well discussed elsewhere.

the Radioactive Man mix is excellent if you like tough, booming quasi-breaks electro. i agree with Matos on the John Peel mix.

my big surprise over the weekend was how much I enjoyed Fabric 6 - Tyler Stadius. like the promo says, it's a "hot, heavy trip, wrapped in percussion and drowned in echo". so it's very minimal, tribal deep house. most tracks are just an urgent two or three note bassline and congas, bongoes, shakers, kicks and snares under many layers of delay and reverb. what struck me most was how little seperates this style from DFA tracks like "dance to the underground" or their mix of "orange alert". really it's just a few elements: in the DFA tracks you get a chicken-scratchy guitar and in the Jay Tripwire tracks you have bleary deep house synth pads.

so yeah, the Tyler Stadius mix is surprising high-quality, even if the rhythm & sound outro feels tacked-on.

also James Lavelle's mix is excellent though I can't think of what to say about it other than Andy K's comments on allmusic are quite right.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't say that vols 1-5 of the fabric series seem very appealing, nor any of the drum and bass volumes, nor the slam or swayzak mixes, nor the ali b or howie b.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Horrible idea, horrible sleeves, something rancid about their packaging the best DJs into their brand and flogging it off.

That said I really like alot of them so they have sort of duped me I suppose.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 27 October 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the jacques mix is ace.

i used to subscribe to them. got em super cheap. but i've given up. it was a luxury i can no longer aford.

the plumps mix is also mighty fine for your party breakbeat needs.

gallantseagull, Monday, 27 October 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

matos the whole point of the thread is to discuss all of them, regardless of what genre, so tell me more about the peel disc. :-)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Swayzak release looks pretty great but I've got too much track-overlap to justify buying it any time soon.

The Bent one is surprisingly high quality but I wonder how much my initial appreciation for it was based on not having heard Annie's "The Greatest Hit" before.

I agree with Ronan in that I instinctively want to dislike these albums; like, I'm sure I'm going to adore the Michael Mayer mix but there's something vaguely disquieting about tying him into the Fabric brand.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I am pleased enough cos I can't find any of his stuff anywhere here!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 27 October 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Horrible idea, horrible sleeves, something rancid about their packaging the best DJs into their brand and flogging it off.

Sorry, what's the problem with the Fabric brand? Is it too parasitic or something?

I guess there's the issue of it being a 'more discerning' take on dance-culture than say, Ministry of Sound; despite essentially functioning in an identical 'corporate' manner.

But then, there's the upside of it representing a mutation of the superclub that actually comes off as sort of relevant. Plus, it's great to see Michael Mayer gaining some much needed exposure. I'd actually like to hear more Microhouse in the 'mainstream'...

Michael Dieter, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i actually really like the sleeves for the first six fabric CDs, the ones with the swingers overlaid with flying animals in hippie pinks and blues. i want huge velvet posters of those pictures for my room.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If you have any tolerance at all for deep house, the Hipp-E and Halo CD is excellent. I also like Radioactive Man, and I absolutely love Swayzak. Eagerly awaiting Michael Mayer.

Destroy: Doc Martin (horrible noodly deep house, badly mixed too), Slam (bog-standard tech-house, although it ends on a great note with UR's "Inspiration"), and especially The Amalgamation of Soundz, which is sleep-inducing even by the standards of chillout music.

Angus Gordon (angusg), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

this whole brand issue in clubbing is strange here in america because there are no clubs or magazines strong enough to be off-putting with their branding.

to what degree is a purchase an endorsement? that is the tough question from all of this because you can easily have a MoS cd next to a fabric one in you collection and enjoy both. i really give cultural material a real exemption from that "purchase as endorsement" idea because cultural material takes longer to understand than, say, and SUV ;-)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have a problem with Fabric itself so much as the aristocracy of cool that its pan-genre approach implies. It probably would have been better if they hadn't started with James Lavelle.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

aah i see! aristocracy of cool is pretty dud. there is, however, the slight possibility that lavelle was jsut the first guy they could rope in, or maybe the first out of 5 people on contract to finish his mix ;-)

do you think other series' of mix cds suffer from the same aristocratic nature (ie dj kicks)? also, what is the alternate approach? if fabric is a sort of aristocracy of cool than i agree about your problem, but, for Socrates' sake, i wonder why aving a series of mix cds that represent only one genre would not imply any sort of elitism or favoritism? is it because fabric is parasitic as Michael said?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

pardon me - i have my head up my ass. so far i am most interested in the le cont and mayer discs, but i do have a soft spot in my heart for tony humphries and i am wondering if anyone has heard his disc. also, i heard the hipp-e disc over the system at a Tower records and liked it a lot, but i only heard about half an hour of it.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, well the only one I have is Fabric 03 with Jon Marsh, since I always liked the Beloved and heard he was a great DJ who played really deep, obscure house.

It's pretty good - not exactly big, epic stompin choons, but it has its moments. Oddly, it was really hard to find - most shops has every other number in the series except 03. I couldn't work out if that was because it was really popular or they didn't bother stocking it...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree, the hipp-e and halo mix sounds great, i've really warmed up to freaks and SWAG and the rest of the 80s-styled almost-micro weirdhouse contingent (someone needs to come up with a good name for these people). i think i'll pick it up this weekend and let everyone know.

(as an aside: has anybody heard the two anniversary mixes on classic? there's a one-disc mix by doc martin that looks ok and a two-disc mix by luke solomon and derrick carter that looks great but i wonder if it hasn't dated by now)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I may actually try buying some of these now! So far, I'd only dug Bent and Jacques' efforts.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and about the swayzak mix: agreeing with tim, a look at the tracklisting shows lots of overcompiled material, a couple tracks that sound interessant (MMM's "donna" in particular) and some stuff that looks trendy / scary / out of place.

BUT - i have it on good authority from trusted friends that the mixing is good enough to (literally) make you weep.

so does anybody know?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

what really annoys me about Lavelle's mix is that he first repackaged it as a super-limited 3cd mix, and then repackaged it AGAIN for a 2cd mix. not to mention in the meantime he repackaged it as an Essential Mix and turned in an identical-sounding Global Underground mix. i feel like he's about to tweak the tracklisting again and sell it with limited-edition BAPE sneakers or something.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the swayzak one is fantastic, i think i've lost my copy though. i listened to it every day for a while, anyway.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

favourites are hipp-e and halo, and swayzak.

only real duds i've heard are james lavelle and amalgamationz of sound...

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

bullshit re: doc martin. i had dismissed it as the usual boring shit until i actually listened to it (go fig) and found it to be an exquisitely mixed trip through different house styles with an extremely slow build that caught my attention immediately.
other recommendations: bugz, swayzak (though some transitions are lazy)
the rest: bah.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the whole concept of a mix CD is corrupt bullshit.... for money grubbing wankers and macdonalds eaters.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i havent eaten at mcdonald's in over two years. i still listen to mix cds though. as for the other contention, well you should see my amex bill. ;-)
does anyone else like the craig richards disc?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the James Lavelle isn't that bad (but then I only really wanted it because I wanted Green Velvet - "La La Land" somewhere), tho he is SHIT SHIT SHIT live.

is the mayer one already out, or coming out?

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

all music is saying nov 3 but the computer at my record store is saying january, so the answer: sometime during this winter ;-)

i dont think i actually know who james lavelle is exactly? is he the eptiome of "proper" "beardy" tastemakers ?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

former MoWax dude, member of U.N.K.L.E. which used to also have DJ Shadow until Shadow figured out Lavelle was a dick. tho the phrase "he is the epitome of "proper" "beardy" tastemakers" puts it better than i could.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Fabric's website sez the 3rd too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"beardy" is not a common adjective in the u.s. so i am glad i used it right ;-) all of those years of paying import prices for mixmag have finally paid off!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

goldsworthy now in the dfa. lavelle, erm yeah.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the Swayzak one is okay

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig the Bugz in the Attic mix--tho I do think it's high time those folks gave us an album damnnit!

cybele (cybele), Sunday, 9 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
well yesterday i was in one of the local used stores and i found fabric 01, 02 and 03 for $8.99 apiece. those are craig richards, terry francis and jon marsh. so far i've only listened to fabric 01 but ...

IT'S BETTER THAN "IMMER"!!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(more on this later)

vahid (vahid), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The Radioactive Man one is really very good, as is Swayzak - wasn't too keen on Grooverider though. I love the John Peel one though - it's basically like listening to a "best of" of his radio shows except he puts the records on the correct speed and doesn't talk for hours on end.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i *really* hate the packaging too. fckng horrible it is.

piscesboy, Friday, 18 June 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha the guy from fabric sent a nasty email when i complained about the packaging in a review. "perhaps he means the promo copies." no, perhaps i mean the HORRIBLY UGLY METAL CASES THAT SCRATCH THE FUCK OUT OF THE CD'S!!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't wait to hear the akufen disc

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, horrible metal cases. as well mayer + swayzak 2 best mixes

Bojan Mandic (bojanm), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I picked up the Diplo disc. It's a good mix, but I feel sort of silly for buying it -- it's more the kind of thing that I'd like to hear in a party or club than on headphones at home. Not that I should be surprised, I guess.

Diplo's mixing is also occasionally a little weak. When he transitions from The Cure to Bombs Over Baghdad, the two songs are blatantly out of tune with each other and it's ugly.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 16 January 2006 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha the original stretch of this thread seems so genteel compared to what it would be like if we had started it six months ago.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
So now they're all £6 a piece in HMV (including the Michael Mayer, if anyone doesn't have it), should we do this again? With added bitchiness, if necessary?

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Monday, 13 February 2006 08:48 (twenty years ago)

I've only got that one and Ivan Smagghe (which I thought was very diaappointing) and someone copied me the Diplo, Swayzak and Akufen, but I haven't had a chance to listen to all of them yet.

I agree with Abbadavid that the Diplo one does sound like it would be good out, but not necessarily something you want to listen to a lot. That's why it's good they're cheap now! Mixes should be more disposable.

(So er ... why this thread, but never mind)

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Monday, 13 February 2006 09:03 (twenty years ago)

JLC (aka THE MIX THAT WILL NEVER DIE), weatherall, mayer = my faves. would like to hear the akufen and swayzak ones sometime. and the carl craig and smagghe. too many to get around to!

truth be told I prefer dj-kicks as a series though.

weekly handle change (haitch), Monday, 13 February 2006 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I really like the Adam Beyer one, which I wasn't expecting.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 13 February 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

that samuel l sessions track is a monster. detroit sounding with a pitched-down vocal - very sleazy

they're starting a podcast

The inaugural fabric podcast will be released on October 24, 2007 hosted by our long-time resident Craig Richards. Then Andrew Weatherall takes the hot seat, sharing tales of his earliest musical memories and influences. Full details of artists scheduled to host these sessions will be announced shortly

dmr, Thursday, 18 October 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

you'd have thought that the RA podcast & online radio must have severely dented the Fabric CD sales, if they were ever significant - there's just no way they can keep pace. they should slow down the release schedule and have less frequent, but bigger 'event' CDs like the Villalobos. and the podcast can pick up the slack...

plus with all the money they'd save on licensing, artwork, distribution etc, they could afford to pack fewer people into the club! :-/

jabba hands, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

Herbalizer one killed me yesterday

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

As shitty as a lot of the mixing on Nitin Sawhney's Fabric issue is, I really dig the back to back Homelands mixing, especially somewhere between 13:00-18:00.

The Herbaliser's mix is also good, as is DJ Format's.

jbill, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

james murphy/pat mahoney one, ewan pearson one, villalobos one all worth yr time.

haitch, Friday, 19 October 2007 05:49 (eighteen years ago)

james murphy/pat mahoney one

yeah I have been listening to this a ton, it's really good

the ewan pearson has plenty of good tracks (panopeeps!) but the jahcoozi song that opens it is kinda gross

dmr, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I really can't get into the Pearson one - his SciFiHiFi and Resident Advisor mixes were fantastic in different ways but on this one he's all 'OMG I am doing a Fabric Mix - I AM SERIOUS EWAN THIS IS SERIOUS MIX' and it falls a bit flat for me.

But still OMG podcast! Excited.

Matt DC, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Craig Richards is a great DJ, never hear much about him on ILX though.

This set is one of my favorite mixes of the year, it goes all over the place (well within a house'n'techno context) but the tracks flow so well:

Part 1 http://www.theflame.it/djset/01-craig_richards-live_at_wasabi_(capitolo_italy)-sbd-06-30-2007-01.mp3

Part 2 http://www.theflame.it/djset/02-craig_richards-live_at_wasabi_(capitolo_italy)-sbd-06-30-2007-02.mp3

Part 3 http://www.theflame.it/djset/03-craig_richards-live_at_wasabi_(capitolo_italy)-sbd-06-30-2007-03.mp3

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

I AM SERIOUS EWAN THIS IS SERIOUS MIX

haha it is kinda like that

esp. the dark carl craig-ish part in the middle

dmr, Friday, 19 October 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

"the ewan pearson has plenty of good tracks (panopeeps!) but the jahcoozi song that opens it is kinda gross"

Pearson has always had a weakness for good tracks with bad vocals.

"I really can't get into the Pearson one - his SciFiHiFi and Resident Advisor mixes were fantastic in different ways but on this one he's all 'OMG I am doing a Fabric Mix - I AM SERIOUS EWAN THIS IS SERIOUS MIX' and it falls a bit flat for me."

I felt this way too but it grew on me - it's not a pretty as the other two mixes but it's pretty compulsive stuff ultimately, esp. the last third or so.

stoked for the next two: jay haze and radio slave!!

the jay haze is pretty cool, I've spun that a few times in the last week since I got it. starts out with some smoked-out reggae-tinged type of stuff then wavers back and forth between that type of vibe and staticky minimal

co-sign on can't wait for radioslave

dmr, Monday, 8 June 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

i do like me a radioslave mix, but sometimes i feel like i'm the only person who really finds the productions (under the radioslave moniker) to be completely lackluster and, if i may say so, boring.

the table is the table, Monday, 8 June 2009 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

eep. haven't heard any new ones in a while but I like Bell Clap and loooove No Sleep 3 (guess that's more of an edit really) and Deer in the Headlights remix &c.

reggae-tinged type of stuff

bad description ... more like downtempo or something. stuttery piano n breakbeats with some housey keyboards deep in the mix, then melds into some sparse low piano 4-4 beat stuff. and a lot of tracks have that sizzling hisssssssss

dmr, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

My own favourites are Ewan Pearson, Optimo, Andrew Weatherall, Ricardo Villalobos, Omar S, Murphy and Mahoney, Plump DJs and Carl Craig.

destroy

none of the albums are really bad, except maybe the post-grooverider GO FASTA DUMM N BASS installments (j majik, andy c & dj hype, etc etc)

well, maybe one. michael mayer. terrible, terrible stuff. like all other kompakt related microhouse, a huge pus-leaking zit on the hairy ass of true techno music.

Any love for the Ricky Villa 'mix'? Was swept along by the pre-release hype at the time but ultimately found it a bit dry and unexciting.

sam500, Thursday, 4 November 2010 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't hear the RV mix until like 2 years later, and for what it was I found it to be really great.

Ricky Villa

lol am stealing this

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

Shackleton one sounded impressive albeit through computer speakers - yeah is def all his stuff, didn't check what was/wasn't exclusive tho

Optimo one is pound-for-pound the most... loveable I've heard in the whole series I think

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

the ricky villa (lol) one is probably the most polarizing fabric cd. myself, i listened to it many times and still couldn't get it. and vahid is the first person i saw hating the m mayer one.

Death Cab for Kuti (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the Mayer one, though the middle is a bit slack, is pretty glorious.

EDB, Thursday, 4 November 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

ricky villa i'd say is pretty cool tho not a necessity. there are like four or five ricky villa albums i'd buy first.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

as far as mayer goes, i really enjoy the first three and last three tracks but i think the middle is a total snorefest.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

truth is that i really hate wispy swoony microhouse tho so your mileage may vary

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

isn't some of the middle quite technoey...i haven't listened to it in years, or is the really technoey track the third one....

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

Loved the Jackson remix of M83 on the Mayer mix. Wasn't so keen on the rest.

sam500, Thursday, 4 November 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

8-X DEATH IN VEGAS 8-X

so this thing starts out with chopped and screwed italo, then moves into something that sounds like a cheesy "trans europe express" rip at first but suddenly breaks down into a tuff abstract techno break thats as chopped and phased as a prime urban tribe track. then there's a third section with super tight electro zaps over what sounds like a klaus schulze track. anyway the third track is the one that takes my head off into future shock territory. the washed-out and slowed down choir that starts the thing is at like the exact midpoint between chillwave, witch house and old rising high chillout tracks, but then there's these echoey balearic freak folk guitar / middle eastern string stabs that fleck the whole thing, and then throbbing gabber-like bass under the whole thing. basically this mix couldn't get more "secret history of goth crunk" if it tried.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure I posted this earlier, but I was a huge fan of the Radioactive Man mix when that came out. Absolutely enormous, tough as nails early-00's electro, which might be a bit dated now but nevertheless is fun as fuck.

village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's too dated for me now but there really *are* several monster tracks on there, i recall the pile-up between his own "ave that" and tim wright's remix is pretty amazing, as is rother's "die macht" and 2LS dot allison remix.

The fact that I rate the Fabric mix ever so slightly higher should not in any way be taken as a diss...

Tim F, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 09:59 (fifteen years ago)

Villalobos mix is a classic in my book, particularly love the first half lead up to the track with the "zany" voice, just super sharp precision house tools. I seriously can't think of anybody more capable of those kind of extremely reduced and refined functional loop tracks since like prime Dan Bell?

The mix that sadly always gets left out of these discussions is Akufen's. It's a perfect summation of that early-mid 00s Classic/MFF/Perlon/Telegraph micro-junction, ridiculously groovy and unashamedly house with plenty of headphone pleasing "wtf was that" moments.

Volker Veldeke, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:40 (fifteen years ago)

Actually Villalobos would've been a classic if it wasn't for the 12 minute OMG Fabric at 10 AM bore-a-thons towards the end.

Volker Veldeke, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:42 (fifteen years ago)

xp yeah I dug out the Akufen mix again recently - great stuff. I think I like it more now than I did at the time of first release (when I was probably hoping it would be all My Way style "flipping the radio dial" blipvert house, although there is more of that on there than I remembered!)

RV mix is the exception to the rule that the only good Fabric/Fabriclive mixes are the ones with PRIME NUMBERS [/sweeping generalisation] ;)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

Thread kind of inspired by the EDM poll nominations and the way they've been taking me deeper into 2000s house & techno than before (though it was a path I'd already started a little way down).

These are the only ones in the series I own so far -
Fabriclive 54 - David Rodigan
fabric 55 - Shackleton
Fabriclive 56 - Pearson Sound/Ramadanman
fabric 63 - Levon Vincent
& I've also given quite a few listens to friends' copies of fabric 50 - Martyn and Fabriclive 57 - Jackmaster.

From these, the Shackleton one is an all-time fave and the Levon Vincent CD is something that I'm listening to over and over at the moment. The only one I'd maybe give a 'destroy' rating to is the Jackmaster, which is a shame because Jack usually is one of my favorite DJs (think this was discussed in another thread actually).
Browsing through the list inside the Levon case, there's quite a lot of tasty-looking earlier entries, but I'm looking for some expert opinion before I decide what to go for next.
(Apologies if this has already been covered - did a quick search and it seemed to be threads on individual CDs but not the whole series).

Actually meant to bump this thread myself. Since these are dirt cheap all over london I've been meaning to stock up.

I guess right now I have:

Jackmaster
Shackleton
Villalobos
Omar-s
michael mayer has been ordered
james murphy/pat mahoney

While I intend to get the Four Tet at some point, I'm also debating akufen, ame, pearson sound and others I've seen used.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 21 June 2012 08:37 (thirteen years ago)

Ame's quite good, not a life changer. Listened to the Ellen Allien one again recently and that's held up surprisingly well.

Jacques Lu Cont's Fabriclive is ALL TIME imo.

Blue Collar Retail Assistant (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 21 June 2012 08:47 (thirteen years ago)

but yeah, also get:

Ewan Pearson
Tyrant
Radio Slave
Metro Area
Swayzak

Blue Collar Retail Assistant (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 21 June 2012 08:48 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, also curious about the early ones, which I've sort of not thought about. Craig Richards, for example? I would look out for Ewan, radio slave, and metro area (not to mention Martyn, Surgeon, Optimo, and Carl Craig), but preference is typically going to those I find for alarmingly cheap prices.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 21 June 2012 09:05 (thirteen years ago)

Been meaning to get the Metro Area one for ages, just ordered it from Amazon for £1 + p&p. Agree with Dwight that the Ellen Allien and Ewan Pearson ones are great.

The Ewan Pearson Fabric mix is really drab compared to his Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi mix and pretty much ever other mix I've heard by him.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 June 2012 09:57 (thirteen years ago)

What's the mixing on the Doc Martin like? Practically every mix I've heard of his has been full of clangers.

millmeister, Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:00 (thirteen years ago)

o really? the mixings p good on the fabric i think

just sayin, Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:02 (thirteen years ago)

that Drop The Lime one is p naff, although not as bad as his actual productions these days

it has 'Rock Around The Clock' slapped in its middle and feels v forced in general

iirc Craig Richards' one was way more interesting than my idea of him as a DJ at least

jacob von logflume (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:17 (thirteen years ago)

I've never heard Craig Richards play anything other than clumpy tech-house and I'm kind of amazed anyone would actually think to check out his own mix.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:24 (thirteen years ago)

The Doc Martin one is really nicely mixed IMO.

Tim F, Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:37 (thirteen years ago)

xpost: yeah, that was my attitude too, but I was just looking at the resident Advisor top mixes of the 00s poll and was kind of surprised to find that at like, 11 or so.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:54 (thirteen years ago)

Re: Craig Richards. While he does play his fair bit if clumpy tech-house (lol, love that term). He does play a lot of other styles too and can pull out some great gems, it's pretty common for him to also play electro, italo or classic deep house. For example he put $tinkworx on his last mix, and I've heard him play things like love'n'music in Room 1. Now, if only he could learn to play these with interesting, dramatic mixes rather than smooth, souless blends - that is perhaps his most 'tech-house' trait.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 21 June 2012 11:07 (thirteen years ago)

Basically when I've been in Fabric and heard Craig Richards I've mainly been glad it's not Terry Francis playing the same record for 3 hours. ;)

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 21 June 2012 11:22 (thirteen years ago)

I obviously love a bit of the old clumpy tech house, just looked for a recent mix and I'm currently rushing my tits of, in a manner of speaking, to this: http://soundcloud.com/r_co/craig-richards-kiss-presents

one month passes...

i found agoria's in the trunk of my car today, i think i threw it in there to sell it because i wasn't really feeling it when it came out ... but damn if isn't actually really, really good!

the late great, Monday, 13 August 2012 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

It's not light goth microhouse like you are loathe to listen to? :)
I don't know that I've listened to the Agoria fabric mix, but I enjoyed his At the Controls mix, although it was more of a 2 CD thematic affair.

I don't think, beyond a few token releases I've picked up, that I've really followed the fabric mixes in the last few years. I thought the Pinch one was very accessible, though, and the Surgeon one was good although fairly by the numbers and didn't deviate into the noisier/darker reaches he goes for.

your native bacon (mh), Monday, 13 August 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

I picked up a whole load of these at HMV Replay the other day - £2 each. So far I have Optimo, Sneak, Derrick Carter and Surgeon. Haven't had a chance to scratch the surface on them all though - which should I start with?

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Monday, 13 August 2012 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

The Optimo one of those is the only one I know, but it's excellent.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 13 August 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i gave that one a quick blitz on friday night before going out. it seemed to take a while to get going, but it was really well put together and mixed.

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Monday, 13 August 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

The Optimo and Surgeon are both really good. You'll probably find Carter and Sneak fairly interchangable - doing the high energy Chicago house thing they've always done. I find it a bit relentlessly and strangely joyless these days.

paulhw, Monday, 13 August 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

the agoria one is not gothy at all, it's kind of a jazzy detroit techno meets continental maximal house thing

the late great, Monday, 13 August 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

Number None, Monday, 13 August 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

Still going through the blitz of fabric CDs I picked up a month or so ago. Actually, I'm listening to the radio slave one for the first time as I write. 5.5 tracks in it's pretty lifeless and dull in the same way pretty much all of RS' productions are, but that's perfect because I need music like this to write essays too, so it's serving well. I could also see this serving exceptionally well as inoffensive, dinner party background music.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

I think I have the Ivan Smagghe one in the car

your native bacon (mh), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

So I guess here's my (seemingly quite favourable) breakdown of what I have

Michael Mayer: ALL TIME CLASSIC, PERRRRRRRRRFECT!
Ricardo Villalobos: Exceptionally solid
Metro Area: Also very good. Very 'fun'
Omar-S.: Also very good.
Radio Slave: see above
Optimo: Still need to listen to it
James Murphy and Pat Mahoney: One of the most fun mixes I've heard. Luvv this.
Shackleton: Really amazing.
Pearson Sound: Very good, perhaps plays it too safe to be exceptional.
Jackmaster: Pretty good, I guess, but nothing all that special, really.
Four Tet: Great, loads of 'character'

Still would like, but the fact I haven't pounced on them might be telling:
Martyn, Surgeon, Instramental + D Bridge,

formerly EDB (ed.b), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, that radioslave mix actually really sucked. The fact that it just ham-fistedly faded out at the end, without any attempt to bring things down first or find closure is just injury + insult.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Monday, 13 August 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

MARTYN is amazingly dope

i was so disappointed with radio slave! it's just shit boring tribal house. he could've just mixed the best 15-20 rekids tracks and been done with it! but i also note that his own dj mixes and the mixes he's made to promote rekids are in general quite underwhelming

another one i forgot that i would heartily recommend to dog latin would be the new digital soundboy soundsystem one

the late great, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

in particular i think DL would really enjoy that one

i do like the michael mayer one but i have no idea what happened to my copy! i have a bunch of random fabric mixes in storage that *aren't* on that list, maybe i'll dig some of them out ...

the late great, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

cheers - will def check some of those out, particularly DSB.

Listened to Sneak followed by Carter back to back while doing some weed clearance in the garden yesterday. Both were okay - the Sneak one maybe less interesting / more functional than Derrick Carter's mix, but I'm not sure either are 'my style of music'. Still, I guess a lot of these comps work as primers and insights into a particular style, and that's cool.

One of my alltime favourite Fabric ones goes back to its early days - the Radioactiveman mix is a lot of fun. Other than that I've got a handful - Global Communications, Swayzak, Michael Meyer etc... My one complaint with a lot of these is that they often play it very strait and safe - think this may be down to the "I am serious DJ, this big serious Fabric mix" factor. That said they don't all lack humour (Metro Area for example).

sorry for asshole (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 09:42 (thirteen years ago)

The Villalobos one is really good, and a good place to listen to a large chunk of his stuff, similar in that respect to the Omar-S one. Mayer is all time. I have a soft spot for the Glimmers one too, but then I like every mix of theirs I've heard.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 10:01 (thirteen years ago)

I like the Carter one.

My one complaint with a lot of these is that they often play it very strait and safe - think this may be down to the "I am serious DJ, this big serious Fabric mix" factor.

The Ewan Pearson and Ame mixes both struck me as examples of this dynamic.

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 10:22 (thirteen years ago)

That reminds me, I forgot to include my summary of:

Ewan Pearson: good-ish. A little too 2007 minimal house. Too clean, and yes, too by the book. Sounds more like a theoretical ideal of a well made mix than something I`d return to over and over.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 11:45 (thirteen years ago)

Pearson's Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi mix from 2005 is fantastic though. Played it in the car this weekend and the last 40 minutes are such a huge rush

Blue Collar Retail Assistant (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 12:52 (thirteen years ago)

i was quite turned off by the size of the track list. i dont have anything against digital - i use traktor myself - but in general i don't care much for the slice-n-dice school of dj'ing. i like ye olde richie hawtin mixes okay but that's about it.

the late great, Friday, 23 October 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)

If you'd asked me without looking at the tracklisting I honestly wouldn't have guessed there were so many records involved. But then the same goes for Closer To The Edit.

There are plenty of other reasons why you won't like it though. It's like a more fussy version of some of the wibblier James Holden sets I've seen in my time.

i've been listening to a fair amount of old holden lately - the "balance" and "at the controls" mixes. super good. maybe i should give this voorn one a shot.

anyway i revived this thread because based on the RA review i was expecting the baby ford mix to be a disaster ... which it really isn't. i mean, he certainly phoned it in, but it's not *that* bad.

That one is excellent, it's pretty much a live set but as such it's better than any individual Mathew Jonson album.

As far as I can tell it's the only good one in quite some time (although the Fabriclive series has been pretty good of late).

Has it been confirmed that the mix series will end?

paolo, Thursday, 8 September 2016 17:13 (nine years ago)

if it does, there's some sort of sale on their back catalog again. not that I need the physical objects at this point in the game, but... I don't know, I'd like something.

back in the mid-2000s I subscribed to the cd series. being in the middle of the US there were limited possibilities to actually go to a club where I'd see acts like those that played fabric. even the mixes obviously made more for home listening made me feel like I was getting a glimpse into something. the design/artwork and music selection was variable but I always got something out of it. I can't remember when I started... probably shortly after that fabric 13 michael mayer mix.

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Thursday, 8 September 2016 18:24 (nine years ago)

it's a weird time for released mixes in physical format, or even mixes that are purchased at all. that the fabric ones are still running seems like a throwback at times

many, if not most, of the fabric mixes are on some of the streaming services, though

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Thursday, 8 September 2016 18:27 (nine years ago)

for a short while i was on the fabric promo groove.
even the promos has a good look and feel to them.
simple basic coloured covers in heavy cardboard.
my faves : omar s, john tejada, commix, noisia,
and when in the mood for an old school hip hop set, dj spinbad.

mark e, Thursday, 8 September 2016 18:29 (nine years ago)

I'm not sure if it's still out there, but the fabric promo materials (just the press releases and promo images/materials, not music) website was public but relatively un-googleable. I remember grabbing some of the original art in really high resolution, which was excellent for background images.

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Thursday, 8 September 2016 18:32 (nine years ago)

I don't think it's been confirmed either way but that's hardly going to be at the forefront of their mind right now. I guess they're promotional loss-leaders in any case, they can't possibly make their money back off releasing a whole run of, say, Jesse Rose CDs.

Commercially-released mix albums do feel anachronistic in the age of hundreds of free mixes a week but I think I still engage with them in different ways. Like a mix CD still feels like a DJ releasing an album. A great podcast can be better and a great radio set can be much better but they have that looser, live feel to them. I like the implied permanence of a mix album (also they're usually in better sound quality and you can actually see track titles, which matters to me).

I'm listening to the Glimmers one right now which is the best of the mid-00s bloggy ones (except the James Murphy/Pat Mahoney one which is all time).

Otherwise my top 10 from both series, in no particular order:

Fabric:

Michael Mayer (everyone says this but its true)
Carl Craig
Ellen Allien
Andy Weatherall
Agoria
Claude Vonstroke
Zip
Omar-S
Luciano
Marcel Dettmann

Fabriclive:

Jacques Lu Cont
Bent
The Glimmers
James Murphy & Pat Mahoney
Jackmaster
Toddla T
Elijah & Skilliam
DJ EZ
Flava D
Logan Sama

There are so many terrible-sounding ones I've never bothered to go near, and nearly every DJ has turned out a better mix album for someone else (Mayer's Immer, Pearson's and Luciano's Sci-Fi-Hi-Fi), but I'll sort of miss them if they do stop dropping off the conveyor belt.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 September 2016 20:26 (nine years ago)

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 September 2016 20:28 (nine years ago)

the Death in Vegas fabriclive one is good

Shackleton and Sandwell District ones are more artist album/mixes than anything else but I'd endorse them

i have been contemplating getting the sandwell district mix as i have no chance of ever getting their vinyl stuff, but the constant use of 'dark' in various descriptions puts me off as i dont actually know what that means in regards to dance music, as to me it means foetus/front242/industrial etc.
that said, i have just heard a sandwell district vs the black dog remix, and so that 'buy now' option is a lot close than it was.

The John Peel one was ridiculous but it introduced me to so much interesting music, as any John Peel session should I guess. That Capris' song singlehandedly got me into doo-wop and that insane gabba track (Identify The Beat) towards the end was a firm party favourite among my friends for years.

FTR : of the promo stuff i heard, the mark farina mix was the one i really hated.

once i tuned into the beat that was consistent throughout i could not hear anything else.

mark e, Thursday, 8 September 2016 22:58 (nine years ago)

I think I'm in the ilm minority in enjoying the loopy, self-consciously "dark" sandwell-style stuff but it's got its place. glad to know Matt DC is a fan.

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 9 September 2016 01:31 (nine years ago)

I thought Sandwell District in general were reasonably highly rated on ILM?

They're pretty monochrome and warehousey but not in the posturing way you get with more EBM-influenced acts. Maybe not quite the time of year yet though - I always seem to dig the album out in November.

She's seemed to veer into a more wide-reaching approach to DJing. First indication of that for me was her dropping 'No Good (Start the Dance)' at Dekmantel this year.

i'm curious what other people's top 10 fabric mixes are. my own lists don't overlap too much with matt dc's but there is some.

as far as the fabrics go i really like tyler stadius and swayzak from the early run. carl craig and global communciation did a great little thing mixing up broken beat and detroit techno. i recall luke slater's was excellent early early example of the berghain / sandwell axis thing bubbling up. ame's is a great blend of deep house and dub house. martyn's was really amazing, kind of sounds like nothing else. agoria's was very emotional, expansive classic techno and house with some neat tempo tricks happening (ableton?). i would probably round out my list with shackleton and levon vincent. very tense listening.

overall i probably prefer fabriclive to fabric. i think a lot more of them are just more interesting, and the good ones have held up really well. jacques lu cont, bent and bugz in the attic still sound really great and fresh. aim's is really lovely pastoral hip hop. death in vegas is very dark and cool in an unusual way, holds up better imo than a lot of similar dark rock-techno-disco entries from the time (say, andrew weatherall or ivan smagghe, both of whom i think are great but turned in not so great mixes). i still listen to james murphy's. the autonomic one nicely sums up that moment. pearson sound, four tet and ben ufo round out my ten.

the late great, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 07:33 (nine years ago)

i do think i forget how many bad blog house and drum and bass mixes were under the fabriclive banner. i still think i prefer the fabriclive mixes i listed to the fabrics but i don't think i'd say the latter series is better than the former.

there are quite a lot i think that are passably good representations of what that person does while not being the best example you can find of what that person does: omar-s, villalobos, dj ez, jackmaster, etc

need to relisten to mumdance and illum sphere, i remember those sounding pretty good but i barely got a chance to listen. and metro area. i haven't checked that one out in a while but i remember thinking it was pretty weird.

the late great, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 07:41 (nine years ago)

This is one of the best mixes of the year for me. Makes me feel jealous how she's not only very physically attractive but great at her craft. She also keeps getting slightly weirder without losing her style which is usually a good sign in any artist for me. The ambition to expand.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 08:32 (nine years ago)

i'm curious what other people's top 10 fabric mixes are. my own lists don't overlap too much with matt dc's but there is some

i'd struggle to fill 10 i think, unfortunately!

there are quite a lot i think that are passably good representations of what that person does while not being the best example you can find of what that person does

This being one of the main reasons! There are certainly DJ's i like that have released fabric mixes, but most fall in either 'passably good representation' category, or often "disappointing and flat". i think ricardo's is actually one of the ones that doesn't though, i think thats one of the few where it does do justice

i dont know if its the cd format that is the issue, or if Fabric is sometimes.....a bit late in booking, there's an argument some of the contributors have gone well off the boil by the time they got to do one

saer, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 10:44 (nine years ago)

Mmm I think I could do it but I haven't listened to all of them. Favorite ones I remember top of my head:

Nina Kraviz
Levon Vincent
Sandwell District
Ewan Pearson
Daniel Avery
Petre Inspirescu
James Murphy & Pat Mahoney
Erol Alkan

Scratch Perverts

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 18:39 (nine years ago)

i dont know if its the cd format that is the issue, or if Fabric is sometimes.....a bit late in booking, there's an argument some of the contributors have gone well off the boil by the time they got to do one

the concept of a cd mix has felt archaic for years now - when i see a dj i like is lined up to do a fabric cd i just shrug because i can and have heard any amount of mixes/sets by them whenever i choose, usually, it's not a special occasion. but from talking to them a lot of them do feel it's a special occasion, or at least they put pressure on themselves to...represent themselves fully, i guess? which is bad when they try to cram too much stuff in, or over-think their selection when their forte is spontaneity (jackmaster is prob exhibit a here).

so as wanky as the auteurist approach is, i guess the djs who can pull this off are those, like villalobos or levon vincent or omar-s, who craft it almost like an artist album, and who have enough quality material to do it themselves.

as for timing, rather than too early or too late per se, a fabric cd commission often comes when a newish dj is cresting a wave and is simply incredibly busy (and also feeling pressure to justify themselves while simultaneously trying to evolve in general). nina kraviz is an example where late timing works in fabric's favour - technically they're super-late given how long she's been around but she's obviously gone up a level and has been doing some super-interesting things with her label this year, so it's the right time for an auteurist approach (though not with her own stuff) to work.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 18:41 (nine years ago)

Think there's a core of a good piece here, Lex!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 18:48 (nine years ago)

I don't think they are super-late if she hasn't gone off the boil! Otherwise agree, which is why i only own one of them!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 08:24 (nine years ago)

Honestly this mix is fine but not especially exciting and takes an age to get going (a bit like the Scuba one from earlier this year), like it doesn't feel qualitatively any better or worse than the run of reasonably straight-ahead European techno mixes they've put out over the last couple of years. It's a lot better than the DJ Kicks one but I don't feel immediately compelled to go and see her live or anything.

the concept of a cd mix has felt archaic for years now - when i see a dj i like is lined up to do a fabric cd i just shrug because i can and have heard any amount of mixes/sets by them whenever i choose

At the same time, the frankly insane volume of free mixes out there means that some form of curatorial hand feels necessary, even as mix CDs (or digital versions of them) become commercially less and less viable. I'm sure there are amazing mixes being put out by random Estonian dudes on Soundcloud but there are so fucking many mediocre ones out there the whole experience feels like a trawl. Also I'm old fashioned and like decent sound quality and being able to actually see track titles.

Whether the Fabric series is the best for that I seriously doubt at this stage. I think there's something about the architecture and vibe of the building itself that encourages heads-down and quite moody selections from DJs who generally aren't. There's also that maddening thing where DJs who always go hard in actual clubs spend half the CD patiently building upwards to the extent that it sounds completely unrepresentative and indistinguishable from everyone else.

usually, it's not a special occasion. but from talking to them a lot of them do feel it's a special occasion, or at least they put pressure on themselves to...represent themselves fully, i guess?

There was a quote from a Flava D interview where she talked about the rush of going into HMV of all places just to see her CD on the shelves which I thought was quite revealing (and hers is probably the best of the last couple of years). At its best a commercial mix should actually feel like an album rather than a straightforward representation of a club set - Mayer's brilliant at this - and hers does as well. A lot of DJs are actively bad at this. By contrast, Gerd Janson's is fine but there's basically no difference between that and hundreds of similar podcasts, like what's your reason for putting this out for sale?

there are quite a lot i think that are passably good representations of what that person does while not being the best example you can find of what that person does

Even if you filter out podcasts and festival recordings I don't think there's a single DJ who's put their best commercial mix out for Fabric. Immer is better than Mayer's, The Workout is better than Carl Craig's, the Sci-Fi-Hi-Fi mixes by Luciano and Ewan Pearson are both better than their Fabric mixes etc. I seem to remember Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann's Fabric mixes being better than their Berghain ones but without there being much in it. (Dettmann's DJ Kicks is fantastic and bucks a generally underwhelming recent trend in that series).

The Fabriclive series has a lot more personality in general but a lot of those personalities are fucking horrible. The recent run of garage and grime mixes has been fantastic though.

there's an argument some of the contributors have gone well off the boil by the time they got to do one

Maybe they just aren't that good in the first place when removed from a club context (or even in one), or their ear for selections is very tied to a small and quite limited set of records. But I certainly remember the format feeling much more vital in the early-mid 00s.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 09:13 (nine years ago)

There's also the cramming-30-tracks-into-70-minutes thing, which is fine if they're playing big-room techno or if they're someone like DJ EZ who always does rapid transitions, but kind of annoying if they're a house DJ feeling the pressure to over-represent themselves. I do love the Jackmaster one though even if the mixing itself is completely shonky. Sometimes it adds to the intensity and at other times it completely kills the vibe.

i recall luke slater's was excellent early early example of the berghain / sandwell axis thing bubbling up

<3 Luke Slater but I remember this being a really good techno mix broken up with these baffling side turns into the big dancefloor bankers of the day, like DFA or Switch or whoever sticking out like a sore thumb. Just this general sense of lacking courage in his convictions or something, or having too much of it. I suppose some mix CDs that feel obvious at the time later feel like an excellent document of a scene but this isn't really one of them.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 09:27 (nine years ago)

Maybe they just aren't that good in the first place when removed from a club context (or even in one), or their ear for selections is very tied to a small and quite limited set of records

This may be true but here it sounds more like you are describing someone who was never on the boil

DJs can get lazy, or rest on laurels and stop digging! or just change their style in ways that dont work! or have different phases....just the same as producers.

At the same time, the frankly insane volume of free mixes out there means that some form of curatorial hand feels necessary

Curatorial hand yes, but its the same for records or for anything, its something you build up over time subconsciously, everyone builds up their own curatorial hand, which is built up from a variety of sources, nothing is ever random (except for when it is).

saer, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 09:52 (nine years ago)

Objekt's 'Kern' is better than any Fabric mix from this year except maybe the Flava D one. And that feels like both a coherent statement and something that wouldn't have worked as a podcast. It also doesn't waste a second of the CD without feeling rushed.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 10:15 (nine years ago)

I don't think there's a single DJ who's put their best commercial mix out for Fabric

if there's a better james murphy &/or pat mahoney mix out there I'd love to hear it

ogmor, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 14:03 (nine years ago)

Probably several other artists are in the same boat (Bugz in the Attic and Bent to start with) but I assume Matt meant "(of those DJs who have released several commercial DJ mixes)".

Tim F, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 15:16 (nine years ago)

I knew zero about him at all before listening to this, but the Call Super mix is the first one in ages, in the core Fabric series at least, where I feel like I want to go back to it again and again and engage with it in the way I would an album. The fact that it peaks so early (and what a peak!) gives him a lot of time to drift through other moods and the second half is completely mesmerising.

Also I didn't really look at the tracklisting beforehand so the Wonderful Life moment was pretty much hands-in-the-air in my front room.

they had a sale on houndstooth stuff, and I was looking through and realizing I wasn't too familiar with the majority and started off on a listening binge to see what's up

mh 😏, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 19:30 (nine years ago)

well lex and a lot of people i know endorse call super (who i am not crazy about but will be giving another shot)

i quite liked the special request 2CD and i've also really enjoyed the marquis hawkes releases

not so into post-dubstep these days but if you are you will probably like the akkord album

finally i have heard a lot of good things about aisha devi but not investigated myself

the late great, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 19:52 (nine years ago)

actually got into akkord via a remix ep a while back

was surprised aisha devi is on houndstooth -- I saw her live last year and it was a++ and after realizing I'd been into her past work under an alias it made sense

mh 😏, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 20:41 (nine years ago)

Love the Call Super mix (really like his album from a few years ago too but this is very different).

Had not heard the house version of Photek's "T'Raenon" before, it's very pretty. Kind of nerdishly amused by how the track sequencing implies that Photek leads with a breakbeat when in fact it's Bushwacka's (it's almost like a small joke about how much we have forgotten about 90s dance music).

eight months pass...

the call super is wonderful, wow

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 November 2017 21:31 (eight years ago)

Brad make sure you listen to his (relatively) new track “Fluenka Spoke”.

Tim F, Saturday, 4 November 2017 22:11 (eight years ago)

great track

just announced Fabriclive 100 (the last one in its "current form" according to the PR blurb) : Kode9/Burial.

tracklisting = TBA

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 16:32 (seven years ago)

I'm intrigued!

mh, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 17:06 (seven years ago)

whoa

the late great, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 17:26 (seven years ago)

i'm assuming craig richards for fabric 100

the late great, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 17:26 (seven years ago)

would not surprise me if they don't release a tracklisting and just put it out.
and yeah, its a pretty bloody great way to end the physical series.

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 17:31 (seven years ago)

Burial/Kode9 and Craig Richards would be the most underwhelming closing salvo imaginable but it makes sense.

Suspect they'll continue putting mixes out after this but those CDs must be like dumping money into a landfill at this stage.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:10 (seven years ago)

Given they only just got round to Sasha I wonder if they've got someone really big lined up for Fabric 100 though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:11 (seven years ago)

I wonder how many people subscribe? Brother-n-law subscribed for an age, to the extent that it felt like "a big thing" when he stopped. Like he'd *changed* or something.

djh, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:14 (seven years ago)

I subscribed for a brief period but it was over a decade ago! The advent of downloadable mixes and especially the regular podcast ones really put a dent in the market

mh, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 21:10 (seven years ago)

we should poll them by their album art groups

the late great, Thursday, 16 August 2018 04:35 (seven years ago)

or do a listen in consecutive order challenge

the late great, Thursday, 16 August 2018 04:43 (seven years ago)

that's a challenge i'm not going to take btw, even allowing for breaks that just too much bad drum and bass

the late great, Thursday, 16 August 2018 04:43 (seven years ago)

fabric vs fabriclive

mh, Thursday, 16 August 2018 13:05 (seven years ago)

is there that much of a difference really ?
I only have 19 of them, some fabric, some fabriclive, and never even really given the 'live' part much thought.

mark e, Thursday, 16 August 2018 17:17 (seven years ago)

generally there's a genre split, although there are definite exceptions

fabric is more techno/house and fabriclive tends to have the drum and bass derived stuff combined with a grab bag of random people mixing

mh, Thursday, 16 August 2018 17:56 (seven years ago)

fair enough, ta for the insight.

mark e, Thursday, 16 August 2018 17:59 (seven years ago)

the division is exactly the same as Fabriclive on Fridays vs Fabric on Saturdays at the club

16, 35, DCP, Go! (sic), Thursday, 16 August 2018 18:10 (seven years ago)

as an old man who has never been to the place, I guess that's why I have never understood the distinction.

mark e, Thursday, 16 August 2018 19:46 (seven years ago)

four weeks pass...

question : is fabriclive 14 by DJ Spinbad the only hip hop edition of the series ?

mark e, Saturday, 15 September 2018 19:51 (seven years ago)

depends how you define it

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2018 20:27 (seven years ago)

oh ok.

*not sure what you mean to be honest*

mark e, Saturday, 15 September 2018 20:37 (seven years ago)

does logan sama count?

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2018 22:31 (seven years ago)

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2018 22:33 (seven years ago)

does aim count?

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2018 22:34 (seven years ago)

does the herbaliser count?

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2018 22:36 (seven years ago)

damn there's a lot more edge cases than i realized

diplo
dj format
dj yoda
elijah and skilliam

and that's it i think

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2018 22:38 (seven years ago)

The Elijah & Skilliam one definitely doesn't count - that and the Rinse mix are probably the two best commercially available cases for grime as *dance music*.

Matt DC, Sunday, 16 September 2018 08:33 (seven years ago)

cheers for the pointers TLG, forgot about the DJ Yoda and Format ones.

mark e, Sunday, 16 September 2018 09:51 (seven years ago)

sigh

the late great, Friday, 28 September 2018 07:48 (seven years ago)

very 2013 way to go out

the late great, Friday, 28 September 2018 07:50 (seven years ago)

Not doing it for me (didn't get on with Kode 9's DJ Kicks at all). Love that Claude Young remix of Jabobs Optical Stairway though. 37 tracks so no doubt it will only make a 90 second appearance tops.

millmeister, Friday, 28 September 2018 08:59 (seven years ago)

Big up for the use of Intense “The Quickening”, however. Serious 1994 jungle crate-digging there

the article don, Friday, 28 September 2018 09:57 (seven years ago)

don't think I have too much use for this but it's introduced me to the extremely wild Black Acid track so kudos

still wackford after all these squeers (DJ Mencap), Friday, 28 September 2018 12:18 (seven years ago)

The flutter of indignation I felt at seeing Scratcha DVA's name in there was a real nostalgia trip, I've missed you old friend.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 September 2018 12:29 (seven years ago)

Is there a Fabric 100 or are they bowing out with the (very boring) Sasha one?

Matt DC, Friday, 28 September 2018 12:30 (seven years ago)

3 stars in RA: https://www.residentadvisor.net/reviews/23143

Apparently there's going to be a 100th installment. Craig Richards / Ricardo perhaps?

millmeister, Friday, 28 September 2018 15:42 (seven years ago)

I don't know if I'm mellowing in old age but I'm quite enjoying this. The Luke Slater drop is a fantastic moment.

I mean, it's not up there with DJ Q dropping a bassline remix of the Stingray theme tune but baby steps eh.

Matt DC, Sunday, 30 September 2018 12:31 (seven years ago)

is it streaming somewhere?

Jeff W, Monday, 25 February 2019 12:52 (seven years ago)

Listened to that the other day, very suited for an early spring - extremely pleasant and entirely unchallenging.

chap, Monday, 25 February 2019 13:51 (seven years ago)

Yeah the Bonobo mix sounds pretty great when all you can see is blue sky.

I don't care about Bonobo as an artist at all (I always assumed he was kind of politely unchallenging, Four Tet with all the rough edges sanded off). But if Dixon had turned in this mix - which he quite easily could have - people would be falling over themselves to hosanna it.

Matt DC, Sunday, 10 March 2019 14:53 (seven years ago)

five years pass...

found the previously unmentioned Surgeon Fabric 53 mix today in a charity shop.
it is exactly what i was needing from a mixtape at the moment
i.e. dark and intense pounding machine noise.
had only heard Surgeons ltd mix cd on Warp prior to this so had an idea of what to expect.
not disappointed.

mark e, Saturday, 8 February 2025 18:24 (one year ago)

arse.
forgot about the expanding of the thread before i did the search.
yeah, it has been mentioned.
quite a few times by the looks of it.
doh.

Still nice to see this thread revived!

i have a snow day so i actually get to hang out and listen to my sweet cd player and get to some of the stuff i have that i haven't listened to/haven't listened to in forever. ANYHOO i'm really enjoying the Zip Fabric mix! i did not know that Zip is the Perlon dude until i looked him up. it all makes sense now. sounds so good.

Zip is incredible. One of the few DJs who I track down random tapes from. He’s also an awesome dude.

Pluto - Point Blank totally makes me want to listen to the album it comes from:

https://www.discogs.com/master/84567-Pluto-Demolition-Plates

which is one of the things i love about these mixes. rabbit hole city. a city filled with rabbit holes!
