in a record store in New Jersey. Some of my thoughts are best expressed in the following IM conversation...

s-: it's all in the context, whatever. i talk so much trash that it's sick.
s-: then always get guiltily caught out.
s-: i need my jaws wired shut
Hstencil: btw the Strokes suck donkey balls.
Hstencil: they're like the aural equivalent of drinking water. Except not good for you.
s-: yeah, they are shite
s-: plus ------ is kind of a cocksucker
Hstencil: they played their shitty record in Princeton Record Exchange when I was there today.
s-: that record blows
s-: if that record was a person i would not fuck it
Hstencil: god so boring, so uninspired, so poorly played!
s-: no matter how drunk i was
Hstencil: yeah that record is a bad lay!
s-: even if that record turned into [name withheld], i would still say "step off!"
Hstencil: you and I should write record reviews that are just like transcripts of IMs.
s-: that would be genius
Hstencil: with certain names whited-out.
s-: yes, of course
s-: we should give the ilm world the benefit of our opinion on the strokes record, no doubt
Hstencil: fuck yeah.
Hstencil: I think I will post this sans names.
s-: yes, go for it!
s-: but really, the sheer laziness that emanates from that album is appalling

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

well my thoughts and that of my correspondent. Anyway, it's complete crap and anybody who buys it, deserves it.

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

dude you were at the princeton record exchange today?! that's like 5 minutes from where i grew up!

i am jealous obv

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i am disappointed that you did not once say "haha". what kind of IM record review is this?!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

well yeah plus I got some good records, none of which were by Les Strokages.

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Les Strokages"!

i prefer "Der Stroken"

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i prefer "strokin'" by clarence carter.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

well yeah, that's a given!

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer "Me and Les Hydropathes"!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 3 November 2003 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it. u r all harringay

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

me too.

(finally i have boiled the essence of most of my posts down into one easy to use phrase)

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

you could shorten it even more to just 'buh'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil you are wrong but we'll work with that

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the new strokes album! but i'd like them even better if they changed their name to 'der stroken.'

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

haha drinking water: 10 out of 10!

David. (Cozen), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

water is life.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard their new song on Ver Radio the other day, without having any idea who it was (though I should have known because who else could it be) and i was like "wow, the radio plays good stuff over here in Englandia"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you just have to forget it's Der Stroken and then it becomes good! btw how crazy is it that Lou Reed's singing style has caught on with someone else? It's like someone said "hey I'm the new Johnny Cash!" You're like that's great but... why??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it works fine as car music. Oh, wait, a copy protection mark. I guess, no use in the car stereo then. Oh well...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the main thing bugging me at the mo is how often he seems to sing about 'wasting time', his time, your time, her time...i mean dude the album's short enough, relax!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Julian Casablancas has done nothing with his life. He should get out a little more and scare up some work.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 3 November 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear Kate is hiring someone in the ass department.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Honestly....

The new album is uninspired, and reaching for something it can't have. Sounds forced. I truly do not like this band, due to their star quotient... but the first LP, seriously, was catchy. It stayed in yr head, whether you wanted it to, or not. This new LP, nothing grabs you. It comes off tired and strained. Poor suckers.

ha ha.

gage o (gage o), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon everybodee its the strokes!!! its gonna be grate!!!

ilm (jdesouza), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm anticipating the Strokes album in precisely the same way I'm anticipating getting hit in the crotch; with severe trepidation and fear coupled the understanding that if I never encounter it, I will be a happy happy man.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a pretty good album, still haven't made a final verdict on it yet. Rock music for people not arsed listening to rock music which is a fantastic idea.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked the single. but i liked the singles off "is this it", and i found the album a disappointment. i will play "room on fire" when i get home and perhaps post my thoughts.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm finding it VERY catchy, more hooks than the last one even

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(i hardly listened to the last one in full)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I am drinking water and listening to Room On Fire, it's quite enjoyable.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a feeling I would like the new one OK, but after giving it some thought & reading how same-sounding it is, I'm fine w/ just the one Strokes record. I mean, those things cost money, you know?

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock music for people not arsed listening to rock music which is a fantastic idea.

Has the 'rap music for people not arsed etc.' and 'dance music for people not arsed etc.' for this year happened yet? We must find them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

'a fantastic idea'

.. which we will just have to credit you with, Ronan. I'm sure their idea was way higher, loftier, Strokesier even.

I've only heard the single and by my current rule of acceptability for any song - ie. whether it can be covered by this down-at-heel covers band I'm in - the Strokes thing passes.

But then so did 'Silver Machine' by Hawkwind.

mick hall (mick hall), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure, I bet I'd be bitching about the dance one though Ned which means.....................JUNIOR SENIOR!

hiphop one is what?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

hiphop is junior senior also

also rock

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

No other bands need exist! Junior Senior are the music for people not arsed to listen to music.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought Chemical Brothers was dance for people who don't like/can't be arsed with dance

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That's old hat. Get with the times.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.easleys.com/hats/O-S/Pilgrim_Hat/pilgrimF15940.jpg

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

do you people really think this album is "hooky?" I forgot how it sounded like five minutes after it was finished playing!

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

but you applauded that free improv dude for making music to which people could be indifferent!

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude no way you guys their new song has like a synth they've totally matured seriously.

David Allen, Monday, 3 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

context, amateurist, context.

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah david we're all dying for them to mature.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Like a good cheese.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

>Hstencil: you and I should write record reviews that are just like transcripts of IMs.
s-: that would be genius<

hstencil, you've found your calling - a Pitchfork reviewer!

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 3 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit, for once I am in utter agreement with the Pitchfork review.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

except I would have rated it 9.5

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock music for people not arsed listening to rock music which is a fantastic idea

'cept this feels more like rock music by people not arsed making rock music. if you're so bored get out of the way! it just oozes laziness and not in the way that g-funk is lazy, either.

rob geary (rgeary), Monday, 3 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i am lazy but i love jangle, i also like the way he says 'don't worry about it honey'. this is pretty much enough for me.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

rob I agree, even the lyrics are all not arsed, but I love that, it beats the cock rock white stripes in my book any day.

that's a fairly personal take though I guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm i prefer the Stripes still i think, perhaps because the effort put in there and the energy on display is more blatant, which is still usually the best thing.

i don't think The Strokes can be accused of really being lazy tho considering how they booted out Godrich because he wanted to fix everything up by editing whereas the band apparently insisted on getting live takes absolutely perfect, meaning much more time was spent recording. i read somewhere that Moretti had spent an insane amount of time just perfecting the most simple drum beats.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely that says something about Moretti, not necessarily positively.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

hey man it takes time to program the Moretti LM-1

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Doktor Avalanche to studio!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I love everything about it except for the way he says "Don't worry about it honey."

BrianB, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i think they have a good arranging sense and an idea of when to hold back. they are good pop records.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"rap music for people not arsed etc" = Black Eyed Peas, so in theory i should be for it but - eh

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bigot. Er, wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

amateurist, I'd think a good pop record would be by definition memorable. (although define "memorable" however you like I guess.)

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it is memorable. i am remembering it a lot, several tunes on there are in my head all the time. explain away!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ, the more you fukrz hate the better the album is! Keep this up and I'll start kidnapping y'all and then it'll be Reverse Ludovico time (this is where I pry open your ears and give you drugs that make you associate the Strokes with good things such as kittens and go-go dancers and oven-fresh bagels)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

DO NOT DENY ME MY ENJOYMENT OF THE AMERICAN ANSWER TO THE JAM, THANK YOU

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

THE AMERICAN ANSWER TO THE JAM

The prospect of twenty further years of Casablancas as a tedious blowhard when he goes solo is enough to cause me to reject this comparison.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

dude that is going WAY too far! The American answer to the Jam? You must be joking.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

hur hur HE IS A TEDIOUS BLOWHARD NOW (also ass ass ass!)

kate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

and you seem to think that's something worth emulating on this thread, I suppose.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean really, it's okay to like it, but to compare them to the Jam? I don't even like the Jam all that much, but I'd rather listen to them than the Strokes any day of the week.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That's who they sound like to me! I'm fucking sorry, but it's true! And sod the VU comparisons; the Strokes are as likely to record something that sounds like "Sister Ray" or "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" or "Heroin" as the Chemical Brothers are to record glitch-drill-and-bass.
(And what's more, the vocal modulations of one Paul Banks (of Interpol) reminds me more of David Byrne than Ian Curtis. So maybe I'm just wrong in the head.)

At least we are ensuring that this thread is too stupid to get into the next Da Capo book.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

if there were licenses for critics, I'd move to have you disbarred.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember if there's ever been another album that I've HAD to listen to - TWICE IN A ROW - every chance I get!

I know that will wear off - its pleasures are very immediate (like, yeah, a "pop" album). The first LP may end up having longer "legs" for me. And I'm pretty sure neither will end up in my pantheon of all-time favorites.

But this is exactly what I was thinking of, back around 1998, when I wondered when (or if) there'd ever be another new album that excited/thrilled/pleased me as much as all the great '90s albums I loved.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The only things that kind of bug me is when he drawls "I caaaaannn't wiinnnnn," and how the rhythm guitar in "Meet Me in the Bathroom" sounds a lot like "Hard to Explain" - though that's kind of neat, just distracting.

I also used to not be so big on "Automatic Stop" and "Between Love & Hate," but I've grown to like them.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

if there were licenses for critics, I'd move to have you disbarred.

Well, sorry I lack the astuteness needed to say something "sucks donkey balls"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno are the jam sacrosanct or something?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

no, didn't you hear? Sticking up for the Strokes is like totally gay and shit, dude

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

But what about gay listeners that actually like the Strokes (there must be some, somewhere)? Wouldn't put them down, if I were you.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray it's Act A Dick Day on ILM (aka "Tuesday")!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

As compared to Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday? Oh, and Sunday?

Dick has always been equal opportunity.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean I have to walk around all stiff and poke my head into things?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(Nicole I was mocking the apparent tone of Strokes-hate here, not mocking gay people)

(especially gay people who like the Strokes, because odds are they're cool)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is starting to feel like the Bart Simpson Unmistakeable Cone of Ignorance

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Nicole I was mocking the apparent tone of Strokes-hate here, not mocking gay people)

Cool then, Nate. Didn't intend to act as ILM Police Chick, but there has been enough hate swirling round here, of late.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate's zeal has made me think I've missed something. I'll go back to it.

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not really a Top 5 album for me or anything (tho def. top ten); I've just grown really weary of kneejerk Strokehate.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

How dare people hate something they've heard and disliked!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

And then start yet another thread about it and do little more than try to make Strokes fans out to be douchebags?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(which, me excepted, you might be surprised to know is not necessarily true)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been more entertained by the reviews of this album (Dolan and Harris, especially) than the album, itself.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

nate I didn't call you a douchebag, and that's a call I can't make, but comparing the Strokes to the Jam (who I don't even like) makes me think you might possibly be deaf.

And if it's knee-jerk for me to start a thread about a record I heard and disliked, well then that's better than HALF of the threads on this site where certain people (not you, necessarily) dismiss shit they haven't even heard. I'm generally not gonna go on a thread about stuff I haven't heard and say "this sucks nyah nyah."

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

NATE'S SPECIAL SUPER-FUN ACTIVITY EXERCISE (no safety scissors required)

1) Play the Jam's "Start"
2) Play the Strokes' "When It Started"
3) Play the Jam's cover of "(Your Love Is Like A) Heat Wave" and/or "A Town Called Malice"
4) Play the Strokes' "Last Nite"
5) Play any mid tempo song by the Jam that opens with a prominent chiming guitar
6) Play the Strokes' "Meet Me in the Bathroom"

I mean Christ, it's not that much of a stretch (especially if you can look past the lead singers)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

this album sucks. chaki says so. i even wanted to like it. oh well they are cute and wear nice clothes.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the album rules. it's catchy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

WHO DO I BELIEVE?!?

rob geary (rgeary), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno? Make up your own mind I guess. I can't remember any of the music, didn't find it catchy at all, but I can remember not liking it when I heard it.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I like when he goes, "Yeah we were just two FUCKS in lust..."

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how the Strokes are the first band I've ever loved where:

1) I don't care about any of the individual members particularly. I'm sure they're okay guys, but I'm not like interested in the guitarist or singer or whatever. I don't even care about looking at them when they play, just dancing.

2) I think I would have loved their music just as much if it had come out when I was in high school or college as I do now (post-college). They're one of the few bands that could bridge those eras for me.

3) They're all younger than me.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Decent follow-up as long as you're comfortable with the fact that they make caffeinated, rinkydink synthpop and the hooks aren't quite as strong (some people still get mad at them for not really rocking, in which case you might as well get mad at Flock Of Seagulls for the same). DON'T read the lyric sheet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Unrest and New Order are probably WAY bigger influences on Mr. Casablancas than Television or the Feelies.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A good reason not to like the Strokes: Julian sings like the child of Iggy Pop and Eeyore.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

caffeinated, rinkydink synthpop

See, if they DID do that, then they'd be great. Said it before, say it again -- they start by firing the drummer and just going to a drum machine and making those who dribble on about them being a proper rock band cry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

See Ned, I have no reason to believe they DON'T use a drum machine.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, I am convinced they are all too addicted to the idea they need a human drummer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

dude those beats are scary tight and repetitive. I have a hard time believing any real drummer would let himself sound so sterile and rinkydink. Also Ryan Adams said he once played a bunch of Strokes songs for Fab on the banjo and Fab didn't even realize they're Strokes songs.

Have you seen the new Strokes video? It's a homage to Tron! I think they're coming around to the fact that they need to start admitting they're drunken androids.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

dude those beats are scary tight and repetitive.

So fuck training some lame bastard to do them! Get a machine and don't worry about it. It'll never get high and steal your money.

Have you seen the new Strokes video? It's a homage to Tron!

Hm...but they could never cover "Only Solutions" by Journey. They could try, tho. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ryan Adams said he once played a bunch of Strokes songs for Fab on the banjo

It's like that photo of Iggy and Lou Reed and Bowie circa 1972 except you want to shoot the participants.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, I am convinced they are all to addicted to the idea they need to make the most boring, uninteresting, uncatchy, unindividual music possible.

to Anthony's point, I think my main problem with stuff like the Strokes is that when I hear it, the only thing I'm left with is imagining the click track! And god, I can only imagine how many takes it took these guys to get their music to sound so pablum.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have three words to say to the Strokes: Call. Ric. Ocasek.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

So he can bitchslap all of you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha yeah the solution to the problem of the Strokes' total lack of personality is to like assume that of some other bands!

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But I think it's not THAT much of a drop-off from Is This It, even if it pales in regards to number of kick-ass anthems. I'm a big fan of caffeinated, trebly guitar riffs and these guys are GREAT at those. It sucks that their singer/lyricist is also the songwriter cuz the guy who actually puts ellipses in the liner notes seriously needs to go.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It has three times the number of kick-ass anthems

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

three notes do not always equal a riff, much less a great one.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha these guys TOTALLY have personality. it's just a shitty one - Bernard Sumner 45s on 33 on top of Feelies song with remixed, stilted drum tracks. That is super unique, IMO. And in my opinion three notes equals a riff if they repeat it enough. and the Strokes do.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I didn't even get to the personality part of the Strokes, which is basically a very sleepy guy who probably shouldn't be getting as much attention from girls as he is. I'm kinda worried that when the hype dies down (which will definitely happen if they never improve on Is This It. It's possible the new album will eventually be known as But The Little Hipsters Understand...) he's gonna become the kinda guy who resents not getting the attention anymore that he never really deserved in the first place.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

key words of my last post, Miccio: much less a great one.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

well I think "Cinnamon Girl" has a great guitar solo and that the opening of "Last Nite"'s gonna be in my head forever (and I sure can't get the hook of "12:51" out of my head now). so there, nyeh!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I relent: compare the Strokes to VU all you want so long as you never compare them to the Knack again

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

nate, see the video for "Baby Talks Dirty" and you'll understand.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the "video" for "Ironman" on some rocknroll TV show ca 1971 and Ozzy was dressed EXACTLY LIKE JULIAN

THIS PROVES EVERYTHING

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(WHY did I write "Iron Man" as one word?!?!)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

dude right now the Strokes haven't even sold enough copies to achieve Knackness. Hstencil's three-notes-doesn't-equal-riff belief also applies to the Knack. Btw, I don't think the Knack were bad. I just notice that some guys in skinny ties are making their guitars go boing-boing-boing repetitively while the singer goes on about the naughty ladies that you can't believe he actually gets to touch. when did this happen before?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

count the ties!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

nate, for fuckssakes don't be contrary, you know they wear ties and you know it's adorable when they do!

also they have awesome shoes, I saw it in a magazine!!

count 'em yourself!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

dude Anthony read again key words MUCH LESS A GREAT ONE! "Cinammon Girl" is indeed awesome but the Strokers will never in a million years write something that great! Mark my words! Argh!

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil Young is motherfucking ugly

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Strokes make the Knack seem like Donald fuckin' Sutherland! (i.e. Mr. Personality!)

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This is blowing my mind, serously. I'm wondering if the sneaky bastards put one version out for download and one for sale, so the people who like it have heard a completely different record than I did. More hooks than the last one? There are NO HOOKS on this record! It's dead in the water! Limp as a dishrag! Strokes-colored wallpaper! A bore, a snooze, a lobotomy! I'm very surprised that ILM likes it. I sold it already.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

omg I can't believe I'm agreeing with Kenan welcome to the team, Mr. Hebert!

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather hear "Last Nite" than "Cinnamon Girl."

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

this is one of the catchiest records of the year. I'm not saying it's inspired; in fact, it's more like it's mathmatically catchy. the verse on 12:51 is designed to get stuck in peoples' heads and it seems to work for everyone except you guys. I think you need medications!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even remember the verse actually, just that little doodledoodledoop keyboard thing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather hear "American Girl" than "Last Nite" since it's the same thing with better vocals (esp. the backing "make it last all night" chorus) anyway.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what I like about "Last Nite" is that his vocals sound NOTHING like Tom Petty! (they sound like a drive-thru window which automatically makes it a better road song!)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

woah woah woah - is the new strokes vid really a tron tribute?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

also: strokes on the cover of spin and rolling stone at the same time - who's the last act to do this?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Check the cocaine receipts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

more to the point, who's the last act to not go platinum in the U.S. to do this?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Bruce Springsteen?

(kiddin')

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, Blount the video is on Launch.com. CHECK IT OUT!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that much hype without a chance of going platinum? Anybody wanna buy a Strike The Strokes t-shirt?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

more to the point, who's the last act to not go platinum in the U.S. to do this?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

were Radiohead ever on the cover of Rolling Stone though?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i expected to totally hate this record but i actually love it! i'm with everything anthony m says on this thread except for the hooks not being as strong as on the debut: i think this record is FAR stronger. the formula's exactly the same, they've just done it right this time.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

radiohead finally gotta rs cover circa gold record amnesiac (headline: radiohead had to destroy rock in order to save themselves)(luckily the vines: rock is back!)

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

god, is there anyone here besides me who thinks Is This It was better AND actually likes the Strokes?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess not!

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

no, me. it's the one thing I agree with Miccio on!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i do. i like the strokes just fine. the first album is better and the artwork on both is really bad.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

US or UK version on first? (or both?)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yay! now I'll be less scared to pitch to the Weekly!

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah nice try Matos. The Incredible String Band or Fairport Convention or Pentangle or Steeleye Span could actually write melodies, sorry.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, quite correct.

I loved Is This It. Nothing on the new album is half as catchy or rockin' or stupid sunny-day listening, and that's the whole thing. I don't like the Strokes for the innovative, textured sounds, I listen for the scream-along choruses.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I just love them crazy riffs

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

A classic ILX moment beyond description -- a bunch of us in Boston October 2002, hearing "Hard to Explain" start in a bar, hoping against hope that it was "A Stroke of Genius" and complaining bitterly when Julian started moaning rather than Xtina.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree with Spencer, it's one of the catchiest records i've heard this year. but i've not heard THAT many geetaw albums (it's the vocal style as much as the riffs tho).

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

they were on Conan last night. they played "reptilia" which i didnt like all that much before, but it fuckin rocked. what was wierd is that Nick played most of the lead parts, including the solo. i always thought albert was the lead guitarist, so im totally confused now, theyre gonna play on Conan every tuesday night this month, so im eager to see who plays the keyboardy riffs in 12:51.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

what sounds like a keyboard on 12:51 is actually a filtered guitar with a very warm tone

neef buck, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i know, thats why i said keyboardY

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

no, Albert's the rhythm guitarist.

A very good question.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

They seem to trade off playing rhythm and lead on different songs...

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what i thought, b/c albert played the solo to last nite on SNL

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah "Reptilia" was SO GREAT when I saw them live a few weeks ago - it was just monstrous.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

they don't look anything alike at all, wtf.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm enjoying the album, I have to say. It doesn't leap out of the speakers, grab you by the trachea and pummel you into a blabbering state of submission like some of my favorite records, but it's certainly better than I'd expected it to be. "Reptilia" is a great track, and I quite like "Under Control." I like that Julian's voice has taken on a slightly ragged quality.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

One quibble I must express - the line "Happy that you said you'd mount me." Yuk.

In general, though, I have no problem with, and actually enjoy, the kiss-off,-babe/non-sequitur r&r posturing of the lyrics.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Strokes: prefabriated musical horseshit for the masses
a boy band product made up of marketing research, media manipulation and
rich powerful parents

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, maybe not everyone. I mean - I didn't read the whole thread, but was there anyone who hated the first one and loved the new one? From what I gather, most people are saying it sounds basically the same but maybe not as catchy. To me, the first one wasn't so much catchy as it was simply annoying.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

chopped liver, Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Also for the record, I don't hold it against anyone for liking the Strokes. I think my main problem with them is the singer's voice - but, you know, different "strokes" for different folks, right?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll confess I tend to think someone's a rube if they go on about how the Strokes are such a badass rock band. And there are people who do that.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I simply adore The Strokes! Let me play a few tracks for you:

*puts down bowl of catfood*
*cat runs to bowl, pulling string tied around its neck*
*string pulls a peg out of a shelf, causing a bowling ball to run down it*
*bowling ball hits a bell, startling Grandma awake*
*Grandma jumps out of her rocker*
*rocker hits a switch on the wall, turning on a fan*
*fan blows into the sail of a toy sailboat*
*toy sailboat glides across swimming pool, its prow hitting the on button of the CD player*

Rube Goldberg (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ok for about a minute there I thought some insane lurker had shown up before I noticed the e-mail address and remembered my use of the word "rube." god it's been too long since I've seen some Rube Goldberg drawings.

but anyhow I really wish the Strokes would dress more clean on magazine covers. Maybe the Don Johnson look. or maybe those ass pirate ensembles Spandau Ballet used to wear. I'd totally be more into them then (Interpol proves it actually).

Grandmas jump out of (young privileged) rockers fully formed (and old) like Athenas from the forehead of Zeus (Zeese?), proving that The Strokes = Tom Petty i.e. it's all good, especially for the fans.

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 6 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mean to be LITERALLY petty, but rock spawns a new revolution of Grandmas and that's what it's all about!

INXS would clean their clocks in a a battle of the bands - YOU KNOW IT TO BE TRUE

Mmm...you've just reminded me how great "Don't Change" is.

Easily.

too bad their lead singer is DEAD.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Julian's alive? *dodges brickbats*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Give him time.

two things: first, "laconic" is the operative term for the vocals which I consider to be a positive thing.

second, I feel like the Strokes have bypassed the entire notion of 90s indie and emo. It's like they're starting in 1987 and should be considered peers of the Jesus and Mary Chain, the House of Love, even the Pixies, and a bunch of other bands at the time that were figuring out who the Velvet Underground were. I appreciate that.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 7 November 2003 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

except the Strokes write way better songs than any of them

Dear god.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that's the most boring TRON outtake ever! why did they put that on the dvd??

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait that's the video. i kinda like "12:51" because the keyboard plays the same melody as the vocal. i will remove myself from the roster of hataz. i wish at least one of them would get a haircut though.

rob geary (rgeary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
under control sounds like sam cooke sort of, or it sounds like thats who they might have had in mind, a thought confirmed by the fact that they played "a change is gonna come" after their set.

i still dont have an opinion on the new record. it is certainly not shit, but neither can i decide if its particularly good. give it time.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I like it a great deal and I was really enthusiastic when it came out, but somehow I haven't listened to it more than 3-4 times and I don't think I ever will (same thing as with the new Missy)
