Tell me about schaffel

so? Monstertruckdriver is schaffel. Superpitcher (who I've never heard) does lots of schaffel mixes.

Is all schaffel in 6/8 time? What are the good tunes? How do you mix it into a regular set?

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Good tunes:

Thomas Fehlmann - Gratis
Michael Mayer & Reinhard Voigt - Unter Null
Borneo & Sporenburg - Boys in Shorts
Akufen - Psychometry
2Raumwohnung - [something I can't remember] (T Raumschmiere Mix)
Superpitcher - Grace
Wighnomy Bros - Bodyrock (this is one I recently discovered, and it's utterly lovely)
Quark - I Walk (Superpitcher Mix)
Mikkel Metal - Nepal
Goldfrapp - Train (Ewan Pearson 6/8 Vocal Mix)

I guess it's all in 6/8 time, though for the purposes of deejaying it can be treated exactly the same as any old 4/4 house track - the mixing with normal house doesn't seem to be that much more problematic than with, say, 2-step and speed garage. Either cross-fade the beats sensitively or wait for a drop-out.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Which of these are available on comps?

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. 2-step is in 4/4 so when you mix it with house at least the beats tend to complement.

I've tried mixing both monstertrucdriver and psychometry over regular house (and 2 step, actually) but find it always sounds a complete mess - 6 kicks overlaid on 4 kicks just sounds horrible. I suppose I could try 1.5 bars of 4/4 music to every bar of 6/8, but that would be tricky...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacob maybe I'm wrong but as far as I can tell most shuffletech only really has four kicks - the waltz effect is created by listen to it as if it were twice as fast as it really is (I usually follow it in 4/4 in my head).

If you follow in 6/8, only the first of every three beats actually uses a kick drum, and the other beats are usually an (absent) implication created by the snares, hi-hats, bass-line and melody being programmed "out of time" with the kicks (my over-used analogy for this is that it's like treating a house track like a rubix cube and twisting it into diagonally juxtaposed square-layers).

So if you beatmatch a shuffletech track's kicks to a normal house track's kicks, only the snares and hi-hats etc. should be conflicting.

Of the tracks I mentioned above, "Gratis" and "Psychometry" are on Michael Mayer's Immer mix, and "I Walk", "Grace", "Unter Null" and the 2Raumwohnung remix are on his Peel Sessions mix (not available on cd). "Nepal" is on Total 5.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it was just 4/4 with a really extremely "swung" 8th note/ offbeat/.

its not really 6/8 is it? I mean the melodies / bass and everything aren't in triplets and I imagine its all composed in 4/4.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

it's 6/8 but the 1-2 pulse (boom crack) of house is still there; the snares should match (right?). it's mainly in the hihats, but the basslines and melodies follow the same swing.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

thomas fehlmann's superbock is a good illustration as it shifts from a house rhythm to a shuffle one as the track progresses.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite thing I've heard from all of this is "Frei" by Freiland, what would someone recommend to me?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

get the schaffelfieber 2 comp that came out this year.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried when it came out but none of the bastards on slsk would let me have it.. I'll search again. thanks

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

thomas fehlmann's superbock is a good illustration as it shifts from a house rhythm to a shuffle one as the track progresses.

Thats what I mean, that its like a house rhythm but with the 8th notes: the tick (of the boom tick, boom tick sound) and all accompaning sounds bass etc shifted late* really late...

In the same way that 2step is a really "swung" 4/4 music.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah exactly, it's like a weird photo inversion of two-step.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

psychometry is much more lkike a 6/8 rhythm than a lot of the other stuff ive heard of this stuff, like 'i walk'. there are triplet beeps all the way through the psychometry tunes, and the feel of 6/8 is much closer maintained. whereas the monstatrukdriver stuff is more of a 4/4 stomp. i mean, these time signatures are just facts, are they? eg the difference between a 3/4 and a 6/8 is just as much to do with individual perception and feel, as 'number-of-beats-in-a-bar' style counting (cf all those knobs who go about obsessively counting out the beats in stereolab/tortoise tunes...."hey! its in 9/8 and then moves to 7/4!!!!)

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

As pointed out by Mr Stelfox, Rachel Stevens's Sweet Dreams (My LA Ex) is the first schaffel pop hit.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
Can we have an updated search and destroy session for schaffel tracks? I haven't heard anything in a while.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 10 June 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Kohncke mix of Freiland's Frei on Kompakt 100 is wonderful. That's the only new one I've encountered.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 10 June 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am guessing of tha above that the Akufen "Psychometry" is actually 3.1 from the psychometry series? Cos sure as hell a lot of the tracks on the series aren't schaffel.

Me, I am sick of scaffel being done pretty average. I can't believe that Superpitcher - Irre has been ignored upthread. Goldfrapp's own we are glitter remix of Strict Machine is great. The Orb and Jimmy Cauty on Spiecher 16 or something is not.

___ (___), Thursday, 10 June 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the orb on speicher 16 is fantastic

metaboman - role für kale is nice and mixes perfectly into unter null, if you keep it in the mix there are horn fanfares, curdling synths and two basslines all stomping along in unison.

konfekt - drive (cont) is good too, completely emaciated schaffel for a change.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 10 June 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

B...b...but the Orb on Spiecher 16. Orb and Jimmy Cauty do schaffel = it is over.

___ (___), Thursday, 10 June 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

who gives a fuck? - jimmy cauty only gets a name check coz it samples ever pulsating brain. it's a rocker, it gets people lively on the dancefloor = winner. everyone knows that.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 10 June 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

T.Raumschmiere - Zartbitter: ambient schaffel

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Robag Wrumhe - "bodyrock" oh yes!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it gets people lively on the dancefloor = winner. everyone knows that

So does ABBA.

jed OTM.

___ (___), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

again? don't get carried away now!*

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Orb does schaffel" basically means "Thomas Fehlmann does schaffel, Alex Patterson tags along because he's run out of his own ideas", right? And I think Fehlmann has every right to do schaffel since "Gratis" is one of the best schaffel tracks ever made oh my god yes.

Yeah "Bodyrock" is brill. So ungainly and yet so emotional!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

it's one of those songs that is teaching you how to dance to it while it plays.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha that's so spot-on! I imagined a video clip for it which starts with a camera watching some hippopotamous tripping over and landing heavily repeatedly, and then the camera zooms out and you see all these other weird things happening in connection to this, further and further, until you see the entire earth wobbling and pulsing in time with the music.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Exoexpress - A Piece of the Action !!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 June 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the first schaffel hit was Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll Part II".

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna see that video Tim!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 June 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know what the snippet of the track that appears a couple of times through "International Snootleg" is from? it goes something like "one day you'll/ return to/ the one you left behind" or something....

jed_ (jed), Monday, 14 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Monstertruckdriver" is in 4/4.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's "Leaving Home" by International Pony, Jed.

That International Pony-Bass Is Boss compilation is really good btw.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i am thinking t rex's 'hot love' might have just beaten garry glitter as the first schaffel chart hit.

any uk ilm'ers who remember the 70's may remember the AWFUL rock dance that boys used to do to glam rock or rock in general. the one finger in each pocket of the jeans and swinging from side to side. i was playing a bit of schaffel on sunday night and all these guys on the dancefloor started doing THAT dance. it made my night!

stirmonster, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

As pointed out by Mr Stelfox, Rachel Stevens's Sweet Dreams (My LA Ex) is the first schaffel pop hit.

Tim Finney to thre- oh wait.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

stir, that dance is used to great effect in the "Tiger Feet" TOTP appearance!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

also Thankyou Ronan!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

t rex schaffel!

stirmonster, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I am almost scared to click that link.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish they all could be california giiiirls!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

that's awesome, stirry.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Monstertruckdriver" is in 4/4

if this is the case then all schaffel is 4/4. Surely it is 4/4 but has some other time signature in the undertow.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

it's 4/4 with triplets. I listened to it like 5 times in a row last night to confirm.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

how about "the way you make me feel" by michael jackson and
"the whole world" by oukast. I know Mayer's mixed in "the whole world" before...

also Rachel Stevens' "My LA Ex" which Britney passed on like a fool. That would have been a huge hit for her. That is, until she covers White Town's "Your Woman" ...

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

David, Rachel's been covered upthread. Her 'Some Girls' is poised to be the 2nd ever schaffel pop hit.

As for MJ, the beat doesn't quite match the requirements.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it kinda does.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know what the snippet of the track that appears a couple of times through "International Snootleg" is from? it goes something like "one day you'll/ return to/ the one you left behind" or something....
-- jed_, June 14th, 2004 6:02 PM. (jed)

It's "Leaving Home" by International Pony, Jed.
-- Ronan, June 15th, 2004 6:50 AM. (Ronan)

no no! "leaving home" is the rhythm track! the vocals on "international snootleg" are from "warriors" by losoul (feat. malte schlorf, the vocalist) on playhouse.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks to you too vahid!

in fact the thought of "the way you make me feel" being schaffel makes me happy - barima, obviously, is a creative listener. Nice one.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah ok my mistake! Vahid, is no doubt, as ever, otm.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you are, in fact, both correct.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Whole World" also goes well with "Bodyrock"-style drum and bass, which is pretty much the D&B equivalent of schaffel (though not as good obv).

Yeah schaffel is 4/4 time with triplets, but that means that if you count twice as fast in your head it sounds like it's in 6/8.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

HOORAY we are both right!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

hooray for everything!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan i was listening to a Matthew Dear live mix set this morning (it's called "Warm Art", comes in three hour long parts, pretty good, would be on slsk I imagine) and thinking about you coming around to this stuff - I'm just really glad that microhouse/schaffel/etc. has just slowly seeped into general dance music such that there's no longer much of that uncomfortable feeling of a split between physical house and intellectual house sorta. (vahid I also thought of you at this point and yer Soma love etc.). And I pondered making a mix starting with the Carsten Jost mix of "Rippin Kittin" (which is great obv though not shuffletech).

It was an oddly sentimental moment.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Philip Sherburne's schaffel mix for Sonar a la Carte is stellar...be sure to download it if he ever puts it online

manuel (manuel), Friday, 23 July 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You see I wonder about continuous schaffel mixes. I've made a few for myself, but I never enjoy listening to them as much as a single schaffel track dropped into a house mix. I'd be curious to hear Sherburne's just to be proved wrong on that score...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 23 July 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

TRIPLETS

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 23 July 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Gary Glitter's "Rock'n'roll pt 2" schaffel, and if so, is it good schaffel?

Kaiser of Köln (Kaiser of Köln), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
My threat is finally a reality. You can download it here, but it's 92 MB so apologies to my friends using dialup.

Let me know if you have trouble with the download - I'm a bit new to hosting my own site and fooling with FTP so I may have futzed something up horribly.

i'm so downloading this tomorrow

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 12 August 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you philip

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 12 August 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

hey i saw a picture of you in an old issue of artbyte today!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 12 August 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Will download this stat! Is "Pride Is Stronger Than Love" an official schaffel mix or what? The original is interesting in that it's sort of schaffel, sort of not depending on what you mix it with (due to the lack of regular snare/hi-hats I suspect).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 12 August 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, granted, I'm using the very broadest definition of "schaffel" here, so some may take issue with certain inclusions. Tim, you've got a good point - I mean, lots of schaffel is almost schaffel only by absence (of snare/hi-hats). Electrochemie LK's "Schall," for instance, always sounds like schaffel to me just because of the way the bass pulse always rushes the one, and the first half of the track would probably mix great into schaffel (I haven't yet tried) - but then of course the bring in an absolutely banging ride cymbal rhythm that makes it pure, "straight" techno.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 12 August 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

this mix is sooo nice! thank you philip for brightening a crappy late-night work session!

dave k, Thursday, 12 August 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, thanks dave. positive feedback makes me glow like a worm. (wait, that should have sounded more positive.) and sl ocki, you must forget you ever saw that photo, or there will be dire, stephen king-like consequences for you. i do miss artbyte, though.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 12 August 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Philip I asked because I thought "Pride Is Stronger Than Love" must somehow be different to "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" (and indeed it would be an awesome name for a schaffel remix!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 12 August 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

ah well now i'm confused.... which is the name of the kompakt track? maybe i got it backwards.... but you're right -

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 12 August 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yes rock n roll part 2 is most definitely schaffel, and also good

dick nempsey, Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

and sl ocki, you must forget you ever saw that photo, or there will be dire, stephen king-like consequences for you. i do miss artbyte, though.

it wasn't that bad!! anyway yeah i don't really know artbyte (my gf brought over an old issue to entertain me when i was sick), but i really liked your silophone article. silophone was definitely one of the best things to happen in this city in recent years (i used to work 3 blocks away, what an amazing building!)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ps to mix schaffel into 'straight' ie non-triplet house -

it only sounds really wrong when the offbeat hi hat comes in so you use a bit of (either) record which is just kick/clap.

or of course you just stop the record and bang it in

dick nempsey, Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

or you use a genius record like wruhme's "wuzzelbud kk," which begins in 4/4, transitions to schaffel, and then BACK to 4/4, making it one hell of a versatile record. just got an old whirlpool productions record (köhnke, neisdwandt, clarc) that does the same trick. anyone konw of any other good transition schaffel-to-4/4 records? i suppose electrochemie lk's "schall" could work too. better yet would be some good 4/4-to-schaffel....

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"bodyrock" by the wb does that too.

i'm gonna lsiten to this mix on the way to or from curiosa tonight. thank u philip.

tricky disco, Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

philip, i downloaded your mix earlier today (it's awesome), do you mind if i share it through slsk?

maybe it would just be faster if we used semaphore. you do have a semaphore-to-digital converter, right?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ok then. it's there (where? --> sungravie)

willem (willem), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It is a shame I can't afford to go the Kompakt festival in Cologne. I was hoping to premiere my semaphore schaffel dance.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"or you use a genius record like wruhme's "wuzzelbud kk," which begins in 4/4, transitions to schaffel, and then BACK to 4/4"

Aysam's Starry Return on Karat Records does this same thing. it's supra-wikkid.

Coincidentally, I'm hosting a Schaffel NIGHT at the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain, MA if anyone's in the area. :) Live schaffel ends the night.

stop by and say hello. I'm DJing first! [might just throw on philip's mix now :)]

Here's the press release:

DiscoNuevo Introduces: Schaffel

[Jamaica Plain, MA] For the Fifth installment of DiscoNuevo, the newest and skonkingest club night at the Milky Way, we have a special treat for you. It's called SCHAFFELHAUS. And we'll have it LIVE Thursday August 12th.

House music has been defined and redefined over the years, from Chicago to Ibiza to Japan and back, but Germany has come up with a new, loping variation called Schaffel. Pioneered by the Kompakt label in Germany, and artists like Michael Mayer, Superpitcher and the Voigt brothers, the badump of Schaffel is reminiscent of Glam Rock: shuffling, strutting, rockish. More minimal, more stylish.

Tomorrow night Boston's own SCORCHIO [aka Cameron Marlow and Heemin Yang] has a prepared treat of LIVE Schaffelized sounds to top your night off. Leading up to that, Easy [aka Tim Osman aka David Day], Erik Pearson [from River Gods' Friday Diversion] and Casey Keenan of the Carlisle Sound present sets interspersed with the dynamic new beat.

It has been hailed by magazines and clubs across the world as a fresh new house variant, and of course we give it to you tonight at DISCONUEVO FUNF [Five]. The Milky Way has also put in some new LIGHTS for the dance floor and some new SOUNDS for the room, a newer full BAR, I mean, the place bounces like never before. What better way to show it off than with live local new sounds.

Now in it's fifth installment, Disconuevo has been dropping new electronic science for months at the Milky Way. As we go, it only gets bigger. Come down and see what all the fuss is about.

The time for new sound in Boston is now. The new sound is at the Milky Way, once a month at club Thursdays... the new sound is DISCONUEVO.

Cover starts @ 9pm and the music starts @ 9:30 pm. The cover is only $5. Ladies get in for free. Bowling is half-price after 9 pm.

The Milky Way is located at 403-405 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. Free Parking in the Hi-Lo Foods Parking Lot next to the Bella Luna Restaurant. For general information call 617-524-3740 or visit http://www.milkywayjp.com

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If Michael Jackson is schaffel, I prefer 'Leave Me Alone'.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"anyone konw of any other good transition schaffel-to-4/4 records?"

T. Raumschmiere's awesome remix of Dave Gahan's "Bottle Living" starts off in whirring 4/4 (a la "Total" off Total 5), then shifts into uber-goth schaffel, then back to 4/4 again.

Philip the Mayer track is "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" - the lyrics are taken from the Sade track of the same name. But now I *really* *really* want a remix called "Pride Is Stronger Than Love"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

woo scorchio

I miss getting drunk at the Appliance of Science

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Following from Tim's post, Cosmo Vitelli - 'Robot Soul' Black Strobe remix.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? I thought Ivan Smagghe was "bored" by schaffel?!?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 August 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow that Black Strobe mix is great! Obv bored no longer!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 August 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hey anyone heard brainchild's "hypnotic shuffle" on eye q? its dead on acidic shaffel from 1993/4!

also, its wicked!

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 13 August 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Coincidentally, I'm hosting a Schaffel NIGHT at the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain, MA if anyone's in the area. :) Live schaffel ends the night"

Oh, damn it. I would have gone had I read this yesterday. I guess I'll have to wait another year for the next interesting house night in Boston.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow that Black Strobe mix is great! Obv bored no longer!!

It came out last year, double 12" with also good mixes from King Britt and The Youngsters and I got it for 50p in a bargain bin to boot. It is indeed hot.

Barms, Friday, 13 August 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I only just noticed this! Thank you Philip, I will download tonight. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

But now I *really* *really* want a remix called "Pride Is Stronger Than Love"!

I know, gah! That's exactly what I thought too Tim, I presumed Philip in his wisdom had got some crazy remix of it! Or maybe played it backwards or something. The delivery of Mayer's vocal in it would suit a song called "Pride Is Stronger Than Love" more I think.

btw Philip this mix is ace! halfway through now and I'm really enjoying it.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded it on my magic free wireless internet last night and it sounded great but I wasn't really concentrating as I was too excited by the magic.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

first impressions it's alot more summery and closer to deep house than alot of the micro mixes I've heard (not that they've been all schaffel). it does remind me of that Neuhaus mix of Mayer's.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the first full-length solely schaffel mix innit? I think it works really well - hope it starts a trend!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 August 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Props to whomever mentioned the Black Strobe/Vitelli track upthread. I picked it up at Amoeba tonight ($2.99! I love Amoeba...) and it does, indeed, rock. A must-have on volume two!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 14 August 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Let me reiterate: this Black Strobe mix of Vitelli (despite the fact I'm not entirely sold on the Michael Jacksonish vocals) is *retarded* (in the good way). Christ.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 14 August 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I felt like posting a "reiterate" post before myself! I was slightly annoyed when Smagghe dismissed schaffel in the liner notes for Death Disco because I had thought that he especially could do great things with it - and lo and behold!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 14 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What did he say? I've never seen the proper packaging of the record. Bit funny, Smagghe of all people dissing schaffel for being trendy or some such (if that's his problem with it).

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 14 August 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of schaffelpop -- what's this chart tune out now that bears some similarity to "Personal Jesus"? Haven't heard it but have seen references. The new Emperor Machine single, interestingly, is really heavily influenced by "Personal Jesus," though pitched up (or maybe down) in such a way that it's futile to try to mix them. But it's definitely derived from it.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 14 August 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

He was talking about the Superpitcher mix of "I Walk", which he included on the Death Disco mix, and he said something to the effect of "I found the whole "schaffel" thing quite boring, but this is more like a classic glam rock record" - which annoys me on more than one level!

I don't know of any current pop tunes like "Personal Jesus" really. The two current schaffelpop tunes doing the rounds are Rachel Stevens' "Personal Jesus" and Whigfield's "Was A Time". I mentioned the latter (Schaffel meets Saint Etienne meets "Rendez-vu" meets, er, Whigfield) on the Depeche Mode thread but more to suggest that with this growing trend of schaffelpop a cover of "Personal Jesus" from someone is now sorta inevitable.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 14 August 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the one, the Whigfield - and that's precisely where I read about it, I just got confused with the PJ reference. Will go look for it now.

BTW, there are some great proto-schaffel, electro-glam tracks on a few early Human League records I have. Quite surprising.

And of course, if you've got a turntable that goes to about -20, you can mix the Clappas rhythm into a schaffel set...

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 14 August 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Current schaeffelpop tunes: what about Goldfrapp's "Strict Machine"?

Philip--really looking forward to the mix. As far as transitioning from schaeffel to flat 4/4, the track "The Drumpads of Jericho" from the (awesome) recent Narcotic Syntax EP on Perlon does it the other way around, starts in 4/4 and finishes in schaeffel (well, in triplet rhythm anyway).

Angus Gordon (angusg), Saturday, 14 August 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

More schaffelpop:

2Raumwohnung - Spiel Mit

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 14 August 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Francois K mix of Personal Jesus is surely the uber-proto Schaffel track. check it out.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm...I have two Fr. K mixes of that song, the "Holier Than Thou Approach" and the "Pump Mix."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(And for what it's worth the first of those is actually what later surfaced as the album mix.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Just for the record Tim, Smagghe's comment was that Quarks Superpitcher mix was "just a very good electronic blues rock track" - the idea of it being blues is slightly more interesting that playing up the glam influence again.

Michael Dieter, Sunday, 15 August 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Props to whomever mentioned the Black Strobe/Vitelli track upthread. I picked it up at Amoeba tonight ($2.99! I love Amoeba...) and it does, indeed, rock. A must-have on volume two!

You welcome, Philip (taking sides: $2.99 vs 50p - ha!). I hope you plan on keeping that mix up for a while, I might be able to download it by the end of the month. BTW, the Rachel Stevens track Tim mentioned is actually called 'Some Girls' (his brain does overload sometimes after all) and you might like her previous, 'Sweet Dreams (My LA Ex)' if you haven't heard that yet.

That electronic blues comment Michael quotes is right otm, definitely more bluesy than glam(my) when considered. Electronic glam-blues, maybe.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Sunday, 15 August 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Btw, the last 'Robot Soul' remix is actually by The Eternals, whom I know from Crydamoure's Waves and not much else.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Sunday, 15 August 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the heads up on the Depeche Mode mix, Ronan. Rockin'.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's great isn't it? just wish that outro went on for another 4 minutes or so.

btw am I the only one who agrees with Smagghe (sort of) about the "I Walk" schaffel remix? It's good enough but not great really, it reminds me of "These Boots Were Made For Walking" or something! The electronic element is very understated.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 August 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it (Personal Jesus) starts getting REALLY good at about the 4 minute mark.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 15 August 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yes all the weird fading in and out, if I was SASHA I'd do a re-edit.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You punks aren't answering my question as to which mix you're talking about!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually amn't sure the proper name, the one that goes BADABDABDDBDABDBDABADBABADBDBADBADBADBADB-BABDBADBADBDABDB???

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, precisely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the only one i found available for download was just called "...(francois kervorkian mix)" though someone said to me he mixed it "in the old school sense of the word" rather than it being a remix.

In other words, i don't know. What Ronan said.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well the basic answer is, album mix or not -- having listened to them both, it seems like it could go both ways, but I assume it's the album mix.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

one that last for 5 minutes and 48 seconds - is that any help?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hold on here...yep, that's the album mix, and I've loved that one since I first heard it in 1989. See, DEPECHE PREDICTS THE FUTURE AGAIN! (They usually performed that arrangement live during that tour, I seem to recall.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes the album version of "Personal Jesus" is *absolutely* the key tune - not even just proto-schaffel like "Knock On Wood" or something, but entirely the real deal.

It's not Smagghe's description of "I Walk" that annoys - I just dislike the general approach of dismissing an entire (sub)genre, then claiming that the exception to the rule is actually something else entirely. I do it too sometimes but generally it's a bad habit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't like that Vitelli/Blackstrobe mix at all. The vocals and lyrics are crap innit.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking awful, in fact.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

has everyone heard that optimo mix that mixes johnny cash's cover of personal jesus with akufen?
not sure if that's why its being brought up here or not (never heard the original)but if not its well worth checking out

robin (robin), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the vocal almost kills that song, yeee

cough! 'someone' jed? there'll be no more hugs from me if yr not careful.

anyway, you missed hearing the dm personal jesus mixed with the jonnie cash one last night.

stirmonster, Monday, 16 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Eek! Having never knowingly heard any Schaffel, I downloaded "Monstertruckdriver" and it turns out that I wrote that exact same tune about six months ago! This is annoying because I also recently discovered I have a tune from 2001 that sounds nigh-on exactly the same as "Techno Is Dead" by Ural 13 Diktators. I'd honestly never heard these tracks before.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry stirmonster, i didn't want everyone to think i was namedropping! (and that is the honest reason!)

Who would lie about meeting Trevor Nelson?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

you, you handsome devil.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I get confused. what´s the difference between shuffle and schaffel? I thought schaffel was just a german word for shuffle. Like da do run run.

carm, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

tis the same. schaffel/ shuffletech.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Philip, this mix is awesome! It's much more fun than I was expecting from my cursory encounters with schaffel on earlier Kompakt comps. I'm going to put this on a CD for the car, but I'm going to throw "Hot Love" on there first. All my friends love it - even people who I wouldn't expect to (indie types etc).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I should say love "Hot Love", but I'm expecting they'll like your Sh*t-Hott mix too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oldeez that could possibly schaffel off (though they should not [and this comes from humming bits in my head, so i might be way off]):
"Help Me Rhonda," Beach Boys
"Happy Together" Turtles
All You Need is Love," that one group
Daydream Believer," Monkees
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" P,P,&M
"Run Run Run" VU
Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" BJ Thomas
"Everything is Beautiful" Ray Stevens
"A Horse With No Name," America
"I Love A Rainy Night," Eddie Rabbitt
"Everybody Wants To Rule The World," TFF

"So Happy To Schaffel," Mikkel Metal rmx

everyone's cringing

ndrw (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, horse with no name! some good suggestions there - no cringing here.

I remember an Addam's family rave song that was great!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

2 real schaffel tracks now from the Get Physical retrospective mix: The Voltique track, 'Be Loud', which is nice electro-pop schaffel and Chelonis R. Jones - 'I Don't Know' (Captain Comatose Remix), which is damn cool and is rocking drumpad schizo with BBC nature program synths.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

As an aside, I'm reading Skykicking, and I just wanna tell Tim that M.A.N.D.Y. & The Sunsetpeople Sunset People (Tiefschwarz Remix) from the GP mix isn't so great (unmixed M.A.N.D.Y. can be a hard act to follow tho'), but I'll give it time. I listened to the CD late on Monday night and it was like all the sex-with-robots comments you ever made about 'Perspex Sex' and electro-house came true big time.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

did you buy that mix barima? as I said on the mixes thread I can't find it online or IRL and I love Get Physical. I do have the Captain Comatose mix of Chelonis though.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"came".

x-post Yeah, I picked it up in a cheap promo CD bin in London last month. Didn't know it was out, and I know little about Get Physical, apart from M.A.N.D.Y.'s 'Home Again' on Tiga's DJ Kicks (and the glowing knowledge that they remixed 'Round Round'), which doesn't hint at how much I'd end up liking it. Suprised you can't find it, have you tried ordering it from work?

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's a promo only thing.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim F said he's seen it in Oz. I could try ripping and burning it but I'm currently in the wrong country, but gimme some time to book my next flight out. I might even hand deliver it (excuse).

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Just checked Discogs: the Physical Music - Selection June 2003, which has most of the same tracklist, is the promo-only one. Keep the faith, man.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tim F said he's seen it in Oz."

I actually have that "Planet E" 12-inch - one of the first "proper" clubby records I ever bought.

Back to the schaffel, then.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 28 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as I can hear, Schaffel isn't in 6/8 and it isn't in triplets; it's actually constructed from pairs of dotted crotchets and quavers, in 4/4, with drumbeats on the 2nd and 4th beats of each bar.

Example:

Chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a, Chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a,
doof doof doof doof

Variations:

Chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a WAAAAW, Chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a WAAAAW,
doof doof doof doof

Chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a, Chunk-a chunk-a BAAAA WAAAA,
doof doof doof doof

In which case, the original Schaffel tune could well be "Spirit In The Sky".

(N.B. For a tune which combines triplets AND Schaffel, look no further than Lieutenant Pigeon's "Mouldy Old Dough".)

doof doof doof doof

Chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a chunk-a, Chunk-a chunk-a BAAAA WAAAA,
doof doof doof doof

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, how FABULOUS that after all these years, dance music should FINALLY discover dotted crochets & quavers. Whatever will they think of next?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Good work, my friend.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I Monster - "Hey Mrs."

very nice poppy schaffel!

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 9 September 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I made a mix, with the help of a lot of your suggestions, and some favorites of my own. It goes a little something like this:

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky
Dr. Phil Strumpf - Wuerfel
Michael Mayer - Love is Stronger than Pride
Undo and Vicknoise - Happy Monday
Kosheen - Hide U (Wighnomy Brothers Mix)
Goldfrapp - Strict Machine
Alter Ego - Satanic Circus
Naum - Is This The End
Ferenc - Punto Pilota
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
Rachel Stevens - Sweet Dreams My LA Ex
T. Raumschmiere - Monstertruckdriver
2Raumwohnung - Spiel Mit (2raum Club Mix)
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World
Akufen - My Way
Outkast feat. Killer Mike - The Whole World
WB - Pusta Reime Im Knubbelbenz Verfahren
Metaboman - Role Fuer Kale
Michael Mayer - Unter Null
Celonis R. Jones - I Don't Know (Capt. Comatose Mix)
Undo and Vicknoise - The Sparrow
Lawrence - Thieltes
Egoexpress - A Piece of the Action
Gary Glitter - Rock and Roll, Part Two

I'll probably make it available very soon on mp3, if anyone's interested...

t0dd burns, Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 9 September 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, here it is. 17.88mb. Bit of a history lesson.

(Only knocked up in Mixmeister, so don't go expecting 100% seamlessness.)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If nothing else, I think this establishes that the first TRUE Schaffel tune was... Chicory Tip "Son Of My Father". Being electronic and all.

Giorgio Moroder AGAIN, see. He invented EVERYTHING. And you thought "I Feel Love" was ahead of its time...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Grandadbob - 'Monster'. Quirky avant pop schaffel.

Basement Jaxx - 'SFM' and Audio Bullys - 'The Tyson Shuffle' (do u c?), which most should know.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike, what's the tracklisting? Don't know if I'll be able to d/l, though if so, maybe some kind soul can help me out later.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The mix works better if you don't know the tracklisting. 13 tracks in 15 minutes. No current club tracks; it's almost all very well-known stuff, but stitched together in near-chronological order to tell a particular story.

Interesting how these paths can sometimes remain hidden for years, before something new comes along and shines a light back over them.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Tease ;-).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 9 September 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Interesting how these paths can sometimes remain hidden for years, before something new comes along and shines a light back over them."

Yes! This is one of the things that fascinates me about the whole thing as well. It's like nobody thought the idea was anything other than a novelty for ages. One of the interesting things about schaffel is that it started off so minimal and anti-pop and ungainly and fairly non-glam (a lot of the schaffel tunes circa 2000/2001 seem to be referred to interchangeably as "schaffel/knarz", "knarz" being (as far as I can tell) mucky techno-grind) - ie. very much *not* electro-glam novelty. Maybe these origins gave it a level of conceptual legitimacy that allowed it to develop into a scene, one which has now taken on those electro-glam novelty aspects in a big way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 9 September 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Having listened to Phil Sherburne's mix a few times over, my question is: does this stuff really work in a club in such large concentrated doses? Maybe my ears haven't yet adjusted beyond the novelty and onto the variations just yet, but I can't imagine what an hour-plus of CHUNKA-CHUNKA-CHUNKA-CHUNKA what feel like...

I'd still love to hear Todd Burns' mix - it sounds way better than mine.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 9 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

In its favour the Caldwell mix does have Martin Solveig's "Rocking Music", which is far and away the best thing played in gay clubs these days (it's also one of those tunes that sounds like it could go on forever and then actually *does*. It's like LCD Soundsystem's "Yeah" only coming from the other direction! Though if my memory of hearing it elsewhere is correct there must be some dub that Caldwell's not using which allows the computer bleep finale full hysterical reign.

Well, there's no way I can download it from any of the comps I use. Haha, I nearly asked you to exchange it for the Pop Playground piece I'm sending you on Suynday.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the first track on mike t's mix?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 10 September 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"On The Road Again" - Canned Heat. I put that in as a nod back to the shuffle blues lineage.

Hope you appreciated the cheeky "Horse With No Name" sample in the middle of "Doctorin' The Tardis". Took me ages, that did...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 10 September 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

looking forward to hearing these mixes bigtime

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 10 September 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(not to say yours isnt great Mike-t but...) t0dd you have done a fantastic job there. The Moment where outkast comes in is truly inspired. Great stuff.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 10 September 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

mike, yr mix was k-excellent while getting drunk & dancing around my room before heading out tonight, big ups. I even dragged my flatmate in after hearing the "horse w/no name" insertion!

etc, Friday, 10 September 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

t0dd yr mix is teh dogs

some random guy off of the internet, Friday, 10 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Todd, any chance you can leave it up until Tuesday morning? I will only be on dialup until then. Can't wait to hear these mixes though...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 10 September 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone who would like a copy of this on CD, I'd be MORE than willing to send a CD-R copy to. In fact, I'd LOVE to, since I'm still wary of the bandwidth issues of hosting this huge thing! Just e-mail me here : todd AT stylusmagazine.com and I'll send it out soon-ish...

t0dd burns, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

isnt stevie wonder's "higher ground" sort of schaffel?

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Where do we draw the line? Pink Floyd's Money could almost be schaffel.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That mix is great fun!

hector (hector), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Would 10cc's 'Rubber Bullets' be considered schaffel?

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Saturday, 11 September 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Everybody's schaffel nowadays.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Rachel Stevens - Sweet Dreams My LA Ex

well, that one would have me leaving the dancefloor.

this oh so hip just recently championing of hyper-marketed mediocre, unsexy... shite. Baffles me. Worst ironic trend ever.

Milkshake, Hey Ya, Can't Get You Out Of My Head. Christ, even TATU! great pop tunes with PERSONALITY.

Rachel Stevens, Justin Timberlake (is smug and smarmy = hawt these days?), Beyonce (cold, stiff.. funky? doesn't feel that way to me)

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Milkshake is the worst song since Stevie Wonder's "i just called to say i love you". i'll take LA_Ex anyday.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Milkshake makes not a lot of real sense, except for a sense of fun!!

LA ex just screams desperate adult-contemporary crossover. I wouldn't mind that if it had any discernable hook, decent chorus or lyric that held my attention *at all*. I remember some part of it went 'if you were in my shoes ... ' or something like that. That's honestly the best I can do.

oh, there was a dum de dum beat which also bored to tears. Some Girls was a very slight improvement musically, but still contains every other weakness in spades.

She makes S Club 7 appear technicolour, joyful and deeply meaningful by comparison.

p.s. you're nuts ;)

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Saturday, 11 September 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Jed likes my 'Some Girls' review ;p.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

there's nothing ironic about it, if you think that the only way it's possible for people to like pop music is ironically then it's no wonder you're so fucking clueless about it.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

More mixes? I love you all. *downloads away*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey potty mouth.

I can see how I maybe wasn't 100% clear up there, so to clarify.

"Milkshake, Hey Ya, Can't Get You Out Of My Head. Christ, even TATU! great pop tunes with PERSONALITY."

I mean that sincerely, not 'ironic' in any way.

Rachel Stevens however is just incredibly -nothing- banal and dispassionate in all ways possible.

I call oh-so-contrary-hipster-bandwagon bullshit on the acclaim for this tune until someone can point out anything *at all* about it which is not mediocre.

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL A MAN? POINTING THE FINGER BECAUSE YOU CAN?"

Genius.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you're right, we all just like it cos we're on the hipster bandwagon. Sussed!

Barms - what's tour "Some Girls" review?

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, that's a decent line :)

thank you.

I'll really try and pay attention next time it passes.

I find her stilted and charmless delivery and phrasing (dull voice generally imo) is what makes me disinterested more than anything else. I honestly find it physically hard to listen to more than a minute of her songs without zoning out.

Then again I think "I hate you so much right now. WAAAAAGGGGGHHHH!" is genius, so maybe I have missed the subtlety in this one.

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Saturday, 11 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Barms - what's tour "Some Girls" review?

Well, it may not have been you (the Alzheimer's is kicking in big time these days), but somebody basically said I made 'Some Girls' sound better on paper than in reality when I wrote it up for the ILM 2000-2004 poll. Apologies for getting you wrong, thought it would have made a cheeky moment with the "Kill Rachel" polemic above.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it was jel?

"Some Girls" was designed to sound better on paper than in reality. Thankfully it sounds like the best thing ever on paper and so still manages to be fucking excellent in reality.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yes! - it was me, sorry. i still feel that way!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Whew.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Them mixes linked here were pretty good! If nothing else I now know what that LA ex song sounds like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it great?

I only prefer 'Some Girls' when I am watching the TOTP performance?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"...the "Kill Rachel" polemic above."

I didn't go quite that far. I would suggest though, that she could make better use of her talents in any of the fine supermarkets we have in England.

I prefer 'Some Girls' when watching the TOTP performance too. I think it's the 'mute' button that makes it.

""Some Girls" was designed to sound better on paper than in reality."
It sounds all too calculatingly designed, as did the last one. I think that's the (my) problem with it anyway.

Anyhow. Moving on... I'm glad I found this website but can see I'm going to have to *seriously* resist my more troll-ific/dogmatic tendencies. I'll probably just try & celebrate the stuff I LOVE only. And just decline comment on the audio sewage (imo). Sorry if I've pissed anyone off.

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer "The Show".

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i abolutely agree with you re "Some Girls" but not "LA-Ex". Anwyay too many people celebrate mediocre pop-dance on ILM and the more people there are around to say that the better IMO.

xp -is The Show that hideous Girls Aloud single that's out now?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, thanks for that :-)

Still, I'm reluctant to raise the temperature of discussion in that way again. More to the point there's just so much mediocre pop-dance about. And hating about it all on a message board isn't a great way to spend a life.

Whereas discovering truly exceptional musical gems to brighten your days through different media channels (internet etc) isn't *so* bad ;-)

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

not enough people celebrate anything on ILM.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Todd - thanks for getting in touch (well, leaving a message). The mix is really good - a lot of fun. I'd never heard that Goldfrapp track somehow, which suddenly raises the intensity of the mix maybe 10 minutes in.
Tears for Fears works well too. Sonia was particularly happy about that part.
More please! (when you can)

oh man... I downloaded that whole thing (the sherburne one is this?) (6 hours on dial-up) and it won't play :'(

have tried converting it from mp2.5(???) in LAME and things but it seems to get chopped in two??

*any* suggestions gratefully received.

Do you have this? I never got to see it or the video and would be interested in a chance to rectify that. Re: the song, furk Gurls Aloud and teh haters 2.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 12 September 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No - I started downloading it when I had my 'free broadband' but it didn't finish. I only saw it the once.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 12 September 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the Soulwax track I've heard that starts off like Oval and then becomes sexy dark schaffel-pop?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just heard a very good schaffel-y track

"Swallow it" by Fad Gadget

Dunno it its a remix or the original, but good nonetheless

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Todd, yer mix is the hotness. Downloading Philip's now and I desperately want someone to put Kiley Dean's 'Stay Away From My Boyfriend' on a mix (I also sang Janet's 'Whoops Now' over the instrumental tracks on Todd's mix).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

matulageci (matulageci), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, tim, that tune's a killer. just bought it on 12" in santiago - now only if i had an MP3 to play on my freaking computer until i get to somewhere with a record player!!!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I just found it on p2p quite easily. It's a monster.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tim, I bet it's 'YYY/NNN'"

Actually it turns out the Soulwax tune in question is "Please...Don't Be Yourself".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Could someone post a tracklist to the "From shuffle to schaffel" mix?

someone get that man some real server space!

(not even worth trying yousendit on (my) dial up... plus ten other people will get there first & nix it probably, and even if they don't it doesn't support download resuming afaik :X)

Ellen Allien!
(if only *she* would play her own tracks in a dj set! maybe I've just been unlucky)

Bis! :O
WHIGFIELD! :'D

I reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally want to hear this.

ruffle bar (grumpy_bastard), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get from me on SLSK if you want Grumpy (drop me an email).

I think yousendit allows 25 downloads per link.

BTW, the file is about 60 MB.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ooooooh! cool.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

At the barbershop the other day, they were playing some schaffel trance on the radio. It was kind of disturbing.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That reminds me - the trailer for a new TV drama series (Naked something?) had a schaffel soundtrack.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Super Furry Animals-Golden Retriever!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

T0dd - I'm finally listening to your mix. It's reall great. Have you got a tracklisting?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 October 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ach - I'm an idiot. It's upthread.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 17 October 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone heard "Bleu" by Isolee on the Beau Mot Plage EP? (from 1999!).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 21 October 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fall, "Big New Prinz"

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 21 October 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Has anyone heard "Bleu" by Isolee on the Beau Mot Plage EP? (from 1999!)."

What's it like Spencer?

I wonder what the oldest "proper" schaffel track is. Something by W. Voigt? Superpitcher's "Soft Machine" and Wasserman's "W.I.R." are both from 1999 as well but I'm not familiar with anything prior to them. There really should be a compilation of the best Kreisel 99 tracks.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There really should be a compilation of the best Kreisel 99 tracks.

I've been meaning to make a succinct Kreisel playlist/mix for ages now! Must get to it...

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 24 October 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

First schaeffel track? My money is on Love Inc's "Hot Love (Mike Mix)", which is indeed Wolfgang Voigt and was released in 1995. It samples the original T-Rex song, and was recently updated by Wassermann (another Voigt alias) on the vinyl version of Schaeffelfieber 2.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 24 October 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only listening to Sherburne's "Shaffel is Stronger Than Pride" for the first time now (I dl'd it a while ago) -- it is actually pretty cool.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

how we all feeling about schaffel now.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 24 April 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it's over! next fad please k thx bye.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that the hard glam component totally peaked with the Alter Ego mix of "Spiel Mit"; I don't think schaffel is dead but it has to regroup with a different emphasis. I still listen to the winsome pop stuff, and the trancier hypnotic stuff like "Amabile".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

great, with the "fad" over the rest of us can go back to appreciating it for what it is - a killer, malleable rhythm that's got plenty of life left in it, no matter what michael mayer or michael f gill might say.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I do think though that the hard schaffel stuff has (temporarily?) been superceded by that super-straight grid-grind sound that labels like Sender specialise in. There was an avalanche of post-"Monstertruckdriver" tracks and that particular incarnation of schaffel now has to work a lot harder than it used to in order to be effective.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I still love schaffel Philip, but you can sort of tell it has fallen out of favor recently.

Anyway here's some good schaffel from 05:

Vitalic - The Past
Markus Guenter - Jellyfish
Markus Guenter - Hi-Jacked
Quasimodo Jones - Good Cock / Bad Cock
Isolee - Enrico

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

ok so if the glam thing is one side of schaffel, whats the other?
the brutal techno driving thing?

cos thats the stuff i like. eg: wasserman "ende der schonzeit" just came on winamp. i dont see that as glam. whats a brutal schaffel top 10? i dont like the glam stuff esp. Quarks remix

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry michael, i was hungover and cranky this morning...)
i have to admit i haven't heard many great schaffel tracks yet this year - though the isolee that opens w/ triplets is one hell of a track. i'd like to hear more people go back to the lurching, unpredictable sound that wighnomys and pastamusik have done - not really glam at all, but not the brutal techno either.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 25 April 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone have Sherburne's Finger Flicks mix available? It's not up with the other sets he has for download, and Schaeffel Is Stronger Than Pride launched bottle-rockets of awesomeness at my skull.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i never did a mix called finger flicks.... (shoomp! pwow! - those are bottlerockets.) *blushing into my coffee*

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

are you playing schaffel out with any regularity phillip? I'd definately like to hear a set next time i'm in the bay area.

tylero (tylero), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm barely playing in the bay area, honestly, and not playing much schaffel out. some time i'd like to do an all-schaffel set live as a sort of special event, though. first i gotta get off my ass and book some gigs, i guess!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

James, if you still haven't got ahold of this I can YSI it when I get home (should have offered before)

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Knarz, brilliant. I think Superpitcher is adorable. But, I have nothing else to contribute here, apart from the schaffel dance, which you really, really don't want to know about.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Will - that would be greatly appreciated.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any video footage or possibly animated gif action of someone doing a schaffel dance? I mean, I'm just wondering, I wouldn't abuse it by posting it across every thread that ever uses the word schaffel or anything. I swear.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

my friends nominal (http://www.subnominal.com) do a kind of Popeye-the-Sailor-Man elbow's out sea-shanty kind of dance during the schaffel parts of their set (that I convinced them to do ;))

one month passes...
was listening to todd's "study 03" on the way home from work today, must say I really like the segue into "you can call me now", the way the vocal is a little slower than the preceding track so it feels like it's tugging backwards into an about turn, it feels a little awkward until it resolves itself when the music kicks in... only complaint I have is that I want more (more more) of superpitcher's M83 remix but I understand, constraints of space etc. really nice mix, todd!

c/n (Cozen), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

philip's "schaffel is stronger than pride" mix, which I'm only just now getting round to listening to, late to every party, is awesome too!

c/n (Cozen), Friday, 24 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

esp. like the Robag Wruhme, Wuzzelbud “KK” part and where it sits in the mix. and the T Rex as opener is fantastic.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

The 'hide u/love is stronger than pride' part in Phillip's mix is my fave bit. Really cool.

tylero (tylero), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah susan, but you're biased - you heard me cursing over that transition for a week!
as for part 2.... someday, maybe this year, i'll get around to it.... ojalá. first i need to organize my fucking records, because all the great schaffel tracks are hidden on obscure B-sides...

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 25 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

i know, with all that overexposure, you'd think i'd be biased in the other direction tho! esp. since i think straight on schaeffel uber energetic happy bounciness might make me nuts, but nice gothic/creepy/sorta dark theater/fucked clown (?) spin here.

Opening track to the Ferenc CD on Kompakt is some great lush schaffel before it breaks out into acid hives.

Is anybody making schaffel anymore? I miss it terribly. Some days I think Akufen's 'My Way' is the best song ever made.

I mentioned in the Kompakt thread, but the new Trackheadz single has a schaffel track called "Kompakt."

Basshunter's "Now You're Gone" is hard-schaffel! It’s quite odd but weirdly pleasing to hear the buzzy bass riffs and hyperactive trance arpeggios and awful quasi-R&B vocals all circling round a (ridiculously fast) stomping glam beat. I never really thought I’d like a schaffel track again but Basshunter has proved me wrong.

Basshunter is at the bosh-house extreme of the spectrum that runs via bassline to UKG, right? how did schaffel get into this stuff's bloodstream?!

jabba hands, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

I think Basshunter is just straight Swedish bosh-house - any connection with bassline etc. is unintentional. Tomcraft did some schaffel tracks a while ago, I would imagine that's the connection (plus, like, schaffel's ubiquity on fashion adverts etc.).

Word of the day is ‘shaffle’ (19th century): to futz about and dither instead of getting on with the important stuff; to fiddle while Rome burns.
