Although I definitely think The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is the best thing they've ever done, "Jude Law and A Semester Abroad" stands up really fucking well, fuiud.

― if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 21:32 (nine years ago)
context for anyone unfamiliar: in 2006, before devil and god came out, brand new's initial demos for the album were leaked; they included several songs that never appeared on any brand new record. jesse lacey was very angry about it at the time and iirc deliberately avoided properly recording the songs that leaked, so only "sowing season" and "luca" made it to the album, with "(fork and knife)" released as a single the following year. last year they remastered the old demos and released them officially. yesterday they put out an ep of newly-recorded studio versions of three of those demos. imo these songs are amazing and i'm so happy

― Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 21:51 (nine years ago)
i've been obsessing over "battalions" from the demos record a lot lately & kinda wish they'd remade that, but it got turned into "archers" on devil & god, which is phenomenal, so i guess it wouldn't make sense
1996 is def the big prize here
― if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:08 (nine years ago)
they're all great tho, "brother's song" sadly remains relevant.
my only worry inre: these is that doing this kind of tinkering might keep them from finishing the final album (if it comes out at all if def will be final; they're selling t-shirts that read BRAND NEW 2000-2018 on them). they've clearly still got it, the hooks on "i am a nightmare" are some of the best they've ever written, and "mene" and "sealed to me" are great too.
― if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:15 (nine years ago)
they're putting out a single with "mene" and "out of range" too
real "emptying the vault before we release a new album and break up" vibe
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:18 (nine years ago)
heh i totally remember these songs, high school years coming back hard
― k3vin k., Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:20 (nine years ago)
xp agree re: breakup vibes. i'm wondering if they'll pull a radiohead and stuff the completed older songs on the album or if it'll be new-new stuff only
― if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:22 (nine years ago)
can't get over how good the reworked demos sound. tbh I doubt they'll be on the new album, or at least I really hope they won't be, the songs are ten years old ffs
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 July 2016 22:28 (nine years ago)
the full set of 2006 demos are on spotify btw. i remember being obsessed with them around the time they leaked, but i'm pretty shocked at how well they've held up. this is really good stuff

I'm going to have to edit the shit out of all these interludes tagged to the end of a lot of these songs. Wish most of them were their own songs.

The guitar solo in "137" is the most glorious musical moment of 2017.

You can easily do this yourself with a lossless MP3 editor. The best one I know is MP3DirectCut (Windows only).

ya i could do it on audacity right now tbh i'm just bizy and figured if someone else had already done it

i don't usually get that stoked about live concerts even for bands i love but this is one of the albums where i need to see them touring this material
― flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:17 (eight years ago)
largely because i need a socially acceptable outlet to singalong to some of these choruses in public
is this band/album too normie for the rest of the 1975 cru?

i have a new favorite every night. this album gives and gives. listening to new music from this band (my favorite in high school/early college 10 years ago) when it's THIS GOOD fills me with a unique sort of nostalgia. or a sense of completeness/closure, idk

i just realized that the reason "i am a nightmare" is so awesome is because it's basically a gaslight anthem song
― k3vin k., Thursday, 19 October 2017 01:19 (seven years ago)
The show was amazing tonight but two notes 1) Jessie clearly hates deja ententu only played two songs from it and before sic transit he sarcastically said “the hit song” 2) I think he’s super depressed? I mean the new material is bleak af he’s playing lots of daisy not really engaging with the audience lots of dark imagery of soldiers in the background. But great show. But I hope he’s okay.
― Mordy, Thursday, 19 October 2017 03:09 (seven years ago)
honestly that was one of my first thoughts when I first heard the new album

starting my emo phase late at 26
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 17:09 (seven years ago)
haha i just listened to YFW -> DE -> 2006 all in succession on a car ride last night and it brought be straight back to high school, screaming out all the lyrics in the car alone. if you like the new album i'd start with devil and god and then work backwards to see how much you can stomach. the old stuff is good for what it is (music for kids) but it's not something i can really imagine listening to all the time anymore
this new album has pretty much cemented brand new as one of my all-time favorite bands tho, or at least made me a little more willing to say that in public lol

― Spottie, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:13 (seven years ago)
i listened to 3 emo albums in my life at present, including this one lol
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:20 (seven years ago)
i loved atdi in hs but ito rock shit i was p much excluse the 'garage' scene (broadly defined) in my early twenties, no regrets as i had the time of my life playing and going to shows twice a week. the only ppl i knew into emo then were more about the mathy/post-hardcore end of it; i think i wasn't fully aware of how fully good emo bangs as conventional rock music
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:37 (seven years ago)
i havent listened to much "emo" music in like a decade, so maybe the scene itself has changed, but if science fiction is seen as an emo album it probably has more to do with the band's historic association with that scene than it does with the actual music
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:37 (seven years ago)
i mean this is just a rock album
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:38 (seven years ago)
it's post-emo
― flopson, Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:46 (seven years ago)

yeah there's some touches for sure
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 20:51 (seven years ago)
another note from the show - lacey played 'soco amaretto lime' but changed the lyrics from "you're just jealous cause were young and in love" to "i'm just jealous cause you're young and in love"
― Mordy, Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:01 (seven years ago)
the enunciation of the "boy we gave you every opportunity" part is super emo

yeah i noticed this from a youtube recently, i like the change. also on a mostly unrelated note he sings "i am paid to make you boys panic while i sing" in "spin light" these days -- i get the feeling he realizes some of his earlier lyrics were kind of, to use a contemporary term, a little problematic
― k3vin k., Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:43 (seven years ago)
it was just striking to me along w/ the other stuff that it's a much darker more pessimistic gloomy take
― Mordy, Saturday, 21 October 2017 23:45 (seven years ago)
yeah no idea what kind of place jesse is in but he's always been outwardly pretty troubled
― k3vin k., Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:07 (seven years ago)
the old stuff is good for what it is (music for kids) but it's not something i can really imagine listening to all the time anymore
fwiw i understand why you and presumably lacey feel this way but i think deja entendu continues to contain some of their most direct, affecting + memorable work. but i never think that "music for kids" is necessarily a limitation on popular music (i still listen to pet sounds too)
― Mordy, Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:07 (seven years ago)
there were signs all over the venue when you entered that said that there would be no crowd surfing at the show and anyone who crowd surfed would get ejected. when the concert started the band played the first few songs behind a gate/fence that spanned the entire length of the stage like they were in jail. i was thinking "oh my god he is so freaked out about the audience he is playing behind a gate now" but it lifted after the first few songs i felt whew
― Mordy, Sunday, 22 October 2017 00:10 (seven years ago)
sort of feel like if i were a band of brand new's popularity i'd be performing behind something bulletproof

Felt like some of the powers that be were dragging their feet about permanently writing these guys off, but those new allegations should be the nail in the coffin. Truly horrific.
There was some other Warped Tour band a few years back accused of some similar grooming, right? Can't remember which one they were, but it makes me wonder if this is a trend that's particularly common in this scene. Seems like a toxic confluence of technology/fan access + song subject matter perfect for drawing/earning the trust and sympathies of vulnerable young fans. It recasts the band's entire discography in a sinister light, knowing that their albums were effectively a trap used to lure victims.

Great piece. Also this one from 2015 hints at how vast the scope of the problem is: https://medium.com/cuepoint/warped-behavior-sexual-violence-on-tour-8ad218d50bc9
Gotta imagine there's a reckoning coming. How many dozens of bands must have known this stuff went on and turned a blind eye to it?
― Evan R, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 18:09 (seven years ago)
i was once at a green day show when i was about 15, i was getting a ride home from these friends of a friend's older brother and they were huge nerds who wanted to stay and meet the band afterwards, which i wasn't really interested in but they were my ride home. tre cool (who would've been late 20s at the time) spent the whole time trying to convince a 15/16 year old girl to get on the tour bus with him, and pulled his cock out at some stage with some really flimsy pretext.

― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 18:25 (seven years ago)
When I was in university taking a shuttle bus between campuses, I randomly overheard a girl (roughly my age at the time so I'd say 18-20) talking about how she'd had sex with someone from GD after a show. That's pretty second-hand, obviously, but it's always stayed with me.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 14 November 2017 18:30 (seven years ago)

If anyone ever wants to write a piece about #MeToo and artist fandom, which someone probably should, they'd do well to start with the wildly divergent (and still-unraveling) reactions on the Brand New subreddit.
― Simon H., Friday, 18 May 2018 01:58 (seven years ago)
can't bring myself to read that tbh. used to be a part of the brand new online fan community as a teenager and those people are nuts
sort of hate myself for loving this record as much as I do. but maybe that's what brand new's music is about, and why it speaks to me so much -- so much of it deals in guilt, self-loathing...it feels very earned.
