Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Because Vanilla was trying to get down with Cypress Hill, and it just wasn't good, you know?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What about his Hendrix one? I've heard neither.
Just thinking about the awfulness of these albums makes my flesh creep.

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolute bloody carnage

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mac Davis album that has this shitty overdubbed a cappella "showcase" song called "Poor Boy Don't Need No 'Lectricity to Make No Rock & Roll".

No, I'm not making this up; and, yes, it sounds even more horrendous than the title suggests.

Also, any album featuring Paul McCartney or Elton John.

Kjoerup, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ANY album featuring Paul Mcartney? Revolver?

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

All McCartney songs on 'Revolver' suck, let's face it. Lennon was at his absolute peak, writing things like "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "I'm Only Sleeping". And Paul gives us treacly, faux-earnest kack like "Eleanor Rigby", "For No One" and the proto-Tom Jones hepcat blackface arrangement of "Got to Get You Into My Life".

In other words, certain parts of 'Revolver' are amazing (John and George's songs, plus Ringo's drumming is swell throughout, especially "Tomorrow Never Knows"), but the album isn't great because McCartney stinks it up with his slimy presence. They could have hired a musically-inclined monkey to play the bass lines instead, with the happy bonus of having said monkey writing NO McCARTNEY SONGS WHATSOEVER. Failing a monkey, they could've hired Bill Wyman or the bass-toting bloke from Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Kjoerup, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Woah. You forgot 'Here, There and Everywhere'....stone cold classic, no?
Alright, here's some more Mcartney to 'dis, or not.
I saw her standing there
Mother Nature's son
Can't buy me love
You never give me your money
Things we said today
Hey Jude

All cracking IMO

Kjoerup, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

well yeh obvoiusly and i(or you) could list 20 more, but....
And you only listed 2 Beatlesongs. Dragging in Wonderful Christmastime and Mull defies the point, surely.

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"The movement you need is on your shoulder" ...

didn't paul mcartney write helter skelter? that's the greatest song ever cuz it made people kill people.even if he just sang it that song alone makes up for anything else he ever did cuz i think he invented punk rock

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Fingers pointed straight at Mr. Currie for that Mr. Swensson album he put out on his label. I got it in a second-hand record store that had about 12 copies, all of which were two quid and labelled "VERY CHEAP ALBUM" in some desperate attempt to get shut of them. Naturally I was curious . . . .

I am pretty sure none of us ever got to hear the very worst album. However, "Let's Talk About Love" by Modern Talking is an obvious contender here.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i am pretty sure i have not only heard the very worst album,i've heard the two worst albums ever

Wait, Rolling Stone likes Sgt. Pepper's?? Zuh??

Also my roommate's brother is in a band called Damn Turkeys, which might be the worst band I've ever heard. He called her for an opinion, and she said she didn't like the cover art, which was the nicest thing she could think of.

Good music is supposed to be timeless, and "Sgt. Pepper" is!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

These albums are all among the best ever:
(What's the Story)Morning Glory - Oasis
"Low" - David Bowie
"The Stone Roses" - The Stone Roses
"Forever Changes" - Love
The White Album
The Great Escape - Blur
"The Notorious Byrd Brothers" - The Byrds
"What's Going On" - Marvin Gaye
"Different Class" - Pulp
"Scoundrel Days" - A-ha
dark side of the moon-pink floyd

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Paul McCartney was never much of a songwriter, let's face it."
he might be my least favorite beatle and responsible for some of the most insipid music ever (IE, "long and winding road" & most of Wings) but ill be damned if songs like "blackbird" and "mother nature's son" don't blow me away every time i hear them.

Also, are we judging the worst album of all time by how horrible they sound or by how negative an impact they've had on the music world?

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, i suppose i mean't a number of things by that, Geir, including:

-Surely the effect of Sgt. Pepper is kind of 'transitory'? I mean huge influence at the time and all but hasn't the glamour kind of worn off now/
-It's been the hoary critic's choice for ages now; isn't the general consensus that Revolver's better? I just thought that you couldn't just do the Sgt. Pepper's #1 vote any more......It's beyond cliched.

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

McCartney is the best songwriter ever.

In the case of John Lennon, though, his post-meeting-Yoko material is all generally terribly overrated. With the exception of most of his "Double Fantasy" material plus a couple ballads on "Imagine".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

People are wrong. People are also wrong to write off prog. In a perfect world "Selling England By The Pound" would be considered the best album ever, while "Sgt. Pepper" would be heavily lauded as an influence on Genesis.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Felcher, you decide the criteria. Explain yor choice, if you want.

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, i think you're more controversial than Eyeball Kicks (though much more civillized).

Ronjeremy, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

That being said, "Revolver" is also great. The most overrated Beatles album is "The White Album", which is still a classic for such wonderful cuts as "Blackbird", "Honey Pie" and "Martha My Dear".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw. I think Colin Larkin has a point. In his 2000 Virgin Top 1000 Albums book he had a list of worst albums ever, but he refused any vote for an album appearing in the Top 1000. Thus, all those albums that were hated by lots, but loved by an even larger number, simply didn't make the list.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Felcher, Geir, I was just taking the piss. I don't much like his jaunty stuff, and I suffered for eight weeks as a kid when Mull of Kintyre was n0.1, but that was probably just the bagpipes.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love The White Album (well most people do) but i love it for tracks like 'Long Long Long', 'Dear Prudence', 'Everybody's Got.....', 'Yer Blues' 'Revolution 9', 'Cry Baby Cry'......Not the twee stuff like 'Martha my Dear'.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to nominate Nirvana's nevermind for having the worst effect on the music world and the Dixie Chicks' wide open spaces for being the worst entire album I've ever been subjected to

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i figured as much colin, but there seemed to be a general agreement on the thread with what you said, and I didn't want geir's mccartney worship to be the only defense of old paul, because he was far from perfect but still kicked ass from time to time.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Nevermind's rubbish anyway. Guy sounds like he's vomiting the whole way trough.

I still have yet to hear anything described as "twee" that I don't really wholeheartedly love and view as a piece of musical genius.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No, look you don't understand. Stop the thread - I got the right answer yesterday : Manic Street Idiots - Holy Bible! We've finished now. Move on. Nothing to see here.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure Doc? What even worse than http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre900/e994/e99441iqxa6.jpg you reckon?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Fingers pointed straight at Mr. Currie for that Mr. Swenson album he put out on his label.

It's a great album (though I admit I've only been able to listen to it twice, including the mastering). But anyone who's still curious can listen to mp3s here.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes definitely even worse than that...*thing*, Stew. Actually the last *Primal's* (snigger) album might be worse than the Holy Bible. I haven't heard it, nor hopefully ever will, but just the fact that they're still around trying to gurn their way into rock history, maan, is horrifying.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Manic Street Idiots.....hahahahahaha. Cheers, Doctor!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I stand by my answer, that I haven't heard the worst album ever, and nobody else on ILx has either.

Listing albums that you, yourself, find overrated is just pathetic. Particularly when said album is generally considered part of the critical "canon" of rock.
