Corny songs that actually move you

Fer instance...I don't know what it is about "Into The Great Wide Open," but something about it gives me goosebumps...

Ditto for every time John repeats a line in "Jealous Guy," ie "I was shivering inside / I was shivering inside"

Not so corny moments that give me chills: When Iggy says "somebody gotta save my soul," when Joey says "Well NYC really has it all oh yeah oh yeah" and every single second of "Peg," the greatest pop song of all time. Bring it.

all of em

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 1 December 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"cameltoe"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sk8er Boi". Oh, I'm just sooooo hilarious. Y'all can euthanize me if you want.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you didn't say carrottop = you don't get euthanized.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oasis "She's Electric"
Crash Test Dummies "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"

dave q, Monday, 1 December 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dolly - "I will always love you"

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"hard candy cock"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally second "I Will Always Love You"

luna (luna.c), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I second "She's Electric," and the lion's share of that particular album, actually. I just hate the fucking lyrics. It seems that Oasis write lyrics as if they expect a buncha loony fans to dissect them and read things into them, as if claiming that "She's got one in the oven / but it's nothing to do with me" will spur an NME "who's it about" frenzy. Too much Paul is Dead trippin', these lads. "Don't put your life in the hands / of a rock and roll band..." uhh, I don't think they need to worry so much. I mean, fucking really, lads.

More from me: "Melissa" and "Ramblin' Man," big time. But then, I'm a pretty big Allmans guy.

Jaheim's "Fabulous"

roger adultery, Monday, 1 December 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

There was this song by Collective Soul that had a video with this guy about to jump off a building but sees these little ants and decides not to kill himself. Corny as corny can be but for some stupid reason it made me shed a tear. I don't remember the name of the song (though it was a pretty big radio/MTV hit).

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the world I know?

luna (luna.c), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that's it! Thanks.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that crash test dummies song but i never thought of that one as being corny.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 December 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wuthering Heights" by KB

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Monday, 1 December 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is 'Under the Bridge' cheesy? That moves me.

Debito (Debito), Monday, 1 December 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

here goes...

"Slide" by the Goo Goo Dolls

I make myself sick.

Will (will), Monday, 1 December 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Tons.

"the last unicorn" by America. Probably a childhood thing as I loved that movie when I was small.

"I'm with you" by Avril Lavigne

"Bring me to life" by Evanescence

"The Silence" by Staind

"Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls, whom I normally despise

Teen angst just never goes out of style in my little imaginary cinematic world. Tho I don't think any of those songs actually made me cry.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Monday, 1 December 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hi, i like U2

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 December 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

tho most of the time the movement in their tracks comes more down to the work of The Edge rather than Bono's lyrics and vocals.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 December 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and a good half of Built to Spill's "Nothing Wrong With Love" album - but that may just be college nostalgia. Still, "Reasons," "Car," and even "Big Dipper" make me very very emotional for some reason.

It must be college for sure, tho, now that I think about it, because large parts of the Working Holiday compilation and two or more Versus albums have a similar effect.

roger adultery, Monday, 1 December 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Extreme's "More Than Words" gets me every damned time.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

good to see some goo goo dolls in there. They are ridiculously cheesy but somehow they can be emotional.

robby, Monday, 1 December 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bangles: Eternal Flame is just so fucking great, I can't believe it.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: Ricky Martin & Mya: Private Emotion. *ducks*

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Stand By Your Man...esp. the lead into the chorus.

Jez (Jez), Monday, 1 December 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

'dont cry for me argentina'.

since when was 'she's electric' corny ?!!!

piscesboy, Monday, 1 December 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know if it qualifies as corny, but Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" moves me to tears every time. Every time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 December 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oasis ARE corny!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 1 December 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Shannon"-Henry Gross

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 1 December 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i always found "pale blue eyes" (vu) corny. but i love it.

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 1 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm Not in Love" by 10cc

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "Shannon"!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 1 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"You're Still the One"

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Monday, 1 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

daniel bedingfield - "if you're not the one"

his whole album, really.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 1 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"fooled around and fell in love." goodly portions of the elton john songbook.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 1 December 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Wyclef Jean _Perfect Gentleman_

alext (alext), Monday, 1 December 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

About fifty percent of REM's output.

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 1 December 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

alexT - that's so funny... I get the same vibe from that song, although the lyrical content is so preposterous. Something about those chords.

"Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper kicks me in the ass every time.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 1 December 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

elton john: 'have mercy on the criminal'. i'm a sucker for the drama of this one.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sinead O'Connor's rendition of Elton John's "Sacrifice" is pretty moving, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

1. "Innocent" Our Lady Peace
2. "It's Too Late" The Streets
3. "Last Goodbye" Jeff Buckley
4. "Waiting in Canada" Jann Arden
5. "Is She Really Going Out With Him" Joe Jackson
6. When Sanchez sings Tracy Chapman
7. "Kiss of Life" Sade
8. "Must I Paint You a Picture" Billy Bragg
9. "Nightswimming" R.E.M.
10. "Truly Madly Deeply" Savage Garden
11. "Wouldn't It Be Good" Nik Kershaw

--I could go on, but I'll stop now.

cybele (cybele), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second Shania Twain - "Still the one"

I'll add:

George Michael - "One more try"
Bonnie Tyler - "Total eclipse of the heart"
Spice Girls - "Viva forever"
Backstreet Boys - "As long as you love me"
Whitney Houston - "Greatest love of all"
Madonna - "Crazy for you"
Olivia Newton-John - "Hopelessly devoted to you"
Corey Heart - "Never surrender"

Seb, Monday, 1 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and lots of Abba too, esp. Winner takes it all and Knowing me knowing you.

Seb, Monday, 1 December 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

November Rain (GNR) - This used to be my playground (MADONNA)

kinski (kinski), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

r. kelly - the world's greatest!

brian badword (badwords), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"This used to be my playground" seconded!

Seb, Monday, 1 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

why is there an "actually" in the thread title? songs have to have some corn in them in order to move you, if they're totally uncorny then what's there to be moved by?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarence Carter - Patches

mason r butler, Monday, 1 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody should cover Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again". If Johny Cash had done it on his last album, I would've probably checked out before he did.

dave q, Monday, 1 December 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Want to Know What Love Is"

But is it corny or is it cheesy? Hmm.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, i also love "Time After Time"

Vanessa Carlton- "A Thousand Miles" makes me all emotional.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lilac Wine" by Jeff Buckley

"Eternal Flame" by the Bangles always reminds me of my first real girlfriend from early high school

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Greg Brady (Barry Williams) sung "Cheyenne" is a very moving song.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bittersweet Symphony" Oasis

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Does the Carpenters "Superstar" qualify as corny?

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

OH! Massive seconds (or is it third or fourths?) on The Bangles' "Eternal Flame". I read very few good things about it, but it stops me cold when i hear it.

Also
Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love"
Billy Joel's "All for Leyna"
Joan Jett's covers of "Love Hurts" and "Celluloid Heroes"
"Magnet & Steel", Walter Egan
"Long, Long Time", Linda Rondstadt

Unum, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Want to Know What Love Is"

But is it corny or is it cheesy? Hmm.

it is high art

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

all the songs mentioned on this thread are pure genius. except the whitney version of "i will always love you", the dolly parton original is obviously superior.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

all the songs mentioned on this thread are pure genius...
-- The Lady Ms Lurex

bumper corn!

superman (it's not easy)- five for fighting
i'd die without you- PM Dawn

Yeeeaahhh

zebjones, Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

superman (it's not easy)- five for fighting

That song annoys me. I think it's the guy's voice that annoys me.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

69 love songs (well, some of them) to thread!

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and "with or without you"

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"space oddity" and "major tom"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"camouflage" by stan ridgway. seriously.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah reading thru this thread "corny" has no meaning. To be corny is to risk embarassment, a prereq. for a moving song.

OK so for me its Barenaked Ladies - "Call and Answer"

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

is "it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday" corny?

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
trenchtown rock sublime

Second "Call and Answer." Third (or whatever) "You're Still the One."

"She Loves You," "Here, There and Everywhere." Even "Imagine."

"A Long December."

Field Mice to thread... "If You Need Someone" - yep.

Foo Fighters - "Walking After You."

"Wish You Were Here"

"Don't Speak," "One," "Sweetest Thing." Though I've come close to hearing them too many times.

"More Than This"

"Wouldn't It Be Nice"

smirky, Friday, 11 June 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

'More Than This' is NOT corny!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

neither is "she loves you"!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote for the Mac's 'Don't Stop'

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 11 June 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"underneath it all" - lord shoot me now.

"somethin' stupid"
"always something there to remind me" - esp. labelle's version
"perhaps perhaps perhaps"
"gloomy sunday"
"your lies" - boy shelby sure can belt it out.
"don't fence me in"
"dammit" - the worst of the worst, but it's a teeny bop sucker punch to the gut that never fails

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Friday, 11 June 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now, Britney - 'Shadow'
Chris Rea - 'Driving Home for Christmas'
Mariah Carey - 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'

'True'
'2 Become 1'
'The Power Of Love'
'Kiss Me'
'A Thousand Miles'
'Turn Back The Hands Of Time' (thanks for that, Pied Piper)

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

George Michael -- Last Christmas

Prince -- Purple Rain

cw28 (cw28), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah,

Two hearts beat as one and gloria by U2.

cw28 (cw28), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

eternal flame is soo right on. also, tiffany and some other stuff i remember from when i was really young. it seems like most stuff i remember from that era takes on this grand, dramatic quality when i see it these days. weird.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Benny Benassi - Love Is Gonna Save Us

I'm really hoping someone does a cover of this with just vox and acoustic guitar, it's too good to remain just another soundalike Benassi track.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

let loose - crazy

i find this so very affecting it always makes me cry. i resent it for doing this to me but i also like it for this reason. damn you pop music!

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Do You Realize," Flaming Lips.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

From the introductory chords on, John Lennon's "Woman" always gets me, altho that's due almost entirely to the timing of its original release.

Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" is a real weepie.

And two of the uncoolest #1 hits of all time: "You Light Up My Life" and "Seasons In The Sun"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 11 June 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones. Oh, man.

Madonna - "This Used To Be My Playground"
The Eagles - "Wasted Time" (cringe)

tell laura i love her - ray peterson

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 11 June 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

'Love Lift Us Up Where We Belong' is playing RIGHT NOW

'Eternal Flame' is a total mover, never thought of it as corny, but it is.

Did Let Loose do 'The Best In Me'? Because that one really MOVES me.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Friday, 11 June 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Merrilee Rush - "Angel of the Morning"
The Poppy Family - "Which Way You Goin', Billy"
Carpenters - "Superstar"

But I suppose this means they're not corny.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 11 June 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the whole pretty in pink soundtrack! esp. the omd track.

(and avril's "complicated" which isn't corny, but you know, it's avril.)

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" is tragic. It's only corny if you think ALL country is corn by definition. Now "Patches," that's more like it.

lovebug starski, Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ANGEL OF THE MORNING IS NOT CORNY.

TheNewJMod (JMod), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Let love speak up itself" by The Beautiful South. It's just an awesome, awesome vocal. Love the guy's voice, hate his shit band.

"Goodbye" by the Spice Girls. As I've said many times, the b/vox on the chorus are utterly superb.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

not inclusive but definitely corny:

"Waiting for a girl like you" Foreigner
"Woman" John Lennon

"Nights in White Satin" Moody Blues
"Against All Odds" Phil Collins
"Message To My Girl" Spilt Enz

"from the bottom of my broken heart" by britney

JD from CDepot, Monday, 3 January 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - "The Power Of Love'

Bimble..., Monday, 3 January 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I'm glad someone said Against All Odds. I was at a funeral last week where that was played, and I bawled like a big kid all the way through it.

My own nomination? "The Living Years" - Mike & The Mechanics. Corny, designed to tug at your heartstrings, and actually does so, against all my better judgement.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 3 January 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

mr mister - broken wings. actually most "corny" songs move me cos i am lame and sentimental.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Milkcow Blues Boogie

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

could it be magic - barry manilow

deanster, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Against All Odds is a good one. My pick which always brings a tear to the eye is He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother - The Hollies version. Funny thing is I don't even have a brother. I MUST be corny to feel this way.

Piers, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

"Everybody Hurts" REM
"I'm In Love With A Girl" Big Star
"Whenever You're Ready" The Zombies

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

OK, here's my for real answer:
Nature Boy - any version from Nat King Cole on.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Daphne & Celeste - Hey Boy

(I'm not even sure if it's meant to be sad! The lyrics aren't really, it's just the way its sung, awwwww)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Another old chestnut:
Les feuilles mortes

and to take it further:
Garota de Ipanema

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse of the Heart" OWNS this thread. That and anyone, no matter who you are, can sing it.

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

tina arena - sorrento moon

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

A few as yet unmentioned:
Eagles, Best of My Love
Malvina Reynolds, Where Are You Going
Patsy Cline, Sweet Dreams

also, in addition to the Lauper/Hooters Time After Time, there is a totally different Whiffenpoofs Time After Time that totally chokes me up:
Now that our love can never be
More than a wistful memory
I try not to fall in love with you
Though time after time I do

Vornado (Vornado), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

'lost without you' by Blink-182

cis (cis), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

"The Living Years" - Mike & The Mechanics is a great pick. I despise that band but there's a genuineness of emotion in there which hits me every time. Probably because of the chorale backing.

And "Time After Time" is my Cyndi Lauper pick too. It hits that right note of knowing there has to be a change but wishing it wasn't so ... similar to Ween's "Birthday Boy."

Todd Rundgren's "I Saw The Light" is perhaps my favorite ebullient song about love.

Eric Carmen's "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" is a true heartbreaker.

Plus Dusty Springfield's version of "24 Hours To Tulsa" ... she lingers on the backstory while trying to muster up the courage to say goodbye, and you can hear the struggle in her voice.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

I mean seriously, it's not even corny, the lyrics have that directness, I think only a robot could not be moved by "Against All Odds".

I also find "Losing My Mind" by the Pet Shop Boys kind of moves me, just the absolute unabashed theatre of it.

Corny as in sentimental, or corny as in full of melodic and lyrical cliches? I am a sucker for the former and cry pretty much on cue. Same with movies.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 20 October 2014 13:45 (eleven years ago)

i could easily see why someone might think dylan's "brownsville girl" is corny as fuck but i'm moved to tears most times i hear that song, it's so captivating, everything about it. the lyrics, the stories he tells in it, the background singers, the huge drums, the sax solo, i just think it's a complete masterpiece. i know i'm not alone in that though, it has tons of devotees.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 20 October 2014 15:19 (eleven years ago)

Good one, calstars. There's a bunch of late '90s/early '00s minor key pop songs that I only ever heard in passing and over PA systems, like, at work and in student unions that always made me feel a little melancholy (e.g. "Barely Breathing"). They lost a little of their magic once I heard them over something other than tinny speakers playing in the distance.

Also, "Adia" kinda fucks me up. And "Anything For You" by Miami Sound Machine.

which is a suuuuuper-cornball song but the basic chords and melody structure + fairly minimal arrangement + soaring gospel choir + self-pitying/self-help tenor of the lyrics totally do it for me. I have clear memories of hearing this song really young, which I'm sure also contributes to it.

U2 - All I Want Is You

Its corniness is enhanced but it being used to compliment what is supposed to be THE MOST EMOTIONAL part of Reality Bites. But I love it. The guitar is wonderful and an overwrought Bono vocal delivery actually works for me for a change.

Some folks up in here have an odd definition of “corny”!

Also, this is gr8;

I was gonna start a thread on the most melodramatic pop songs. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" being the obvious champ. My #2 would be "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" , Air Supply

Growin' up you don't see the writing on the wall
Passin' by, movin' straight ahead you knew it all
But maybe sometime if you feel the pain,
You'll find you're all alone everything has changed
