And ignore everything "st" says; he's on some weird anti-indie-rap vendetta and has no idea what he's talking about.

"Where to start" is a bastard of a question considering he's got a hand in at least four albums this year (if you count the leaked Madvillainy). I made a comp recently of his best stuff (both producing and MCing from 1999-mid '03; not including Madvillainy or Viktor Vaughn Vaudeville Villain), and it goes like this:

king geedorah - fazers
monsta island czars - m.i.n.y.a.
mf doom - who you think i am ft. m.i.c.
king geedorah - fastlane ft. biolante
mf doom - go with the flow
m.i.c. - mic line
king geedorah - anti-matter ft. mf doom and mr. fantastik
mf doom - operation greenbacks
king geedorah - lockjaw ft. trunks
mf doom - i hear voices (part once)
king geedorah - next levels ft. lil' sci, id 4 winds & stahhr
mf doom - doomsday
king geedorah - the final hour ft. mf doom
m.i.c. - 1,2... 1,2
mf doom - gas drawls
m.i.c. - take control
mf doom - ? ft. kurious
m.i.c. - make it squash
king geedorah - krazy world ft. gigan
mf doom - tick, tick ft. mf grimm
m.i.c. - under pressure
mf doom - dead bent
king geedorah - the fine print

*Geedorah is an MF Doom alias, is why I'm all "huh?" when he has a King Geedorah track "ft. MF Doom".

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know much at all about doom's own material - but his track on herbalizer's something wicked this way comes and blacklist with prefuse 73 are both solid tracks.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the king gheedorah album is my favorite of the year.

its hilarious in reviews when they write that he only raps on two tracks. ALIASES YOU DUMBSHITS! he's on nearly every track. and two of the few he isn't on are my favorites "Krazy World" and "I Wonder"

the madvillian album is also superb.

and viktor vaughn.

can't wait for MM FOOD!!!!!!!

joshd, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I take it you mean the AMG review ("MF Doom's two vocal features make up for much of the mentalist madness." Well okay). Dumb, yeah, but it's not the first time they've sputtered inanities at an MF Doom record.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I've seen it in multiple places.

To use pitchfork as an example (sorry)-

...The King Geedorah project, unlike Doom's recent outing as Viktor Vaughn, finds MF almost exclusively behind the boards, comfortable with rocking the SP1200 and letting others turn out the mic. Only two tracks feature Doom rhyming, but at least one of them is an album highlight...

Now yeah i know PITCHFORK BLAH BLAH CLOWNS BLAH BLAH, but the kid loves the record, makes reference to past doom projects, and yet still he doesn't recognize MF DOOM'S GODDAMN VOICE.

joshd, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

you're lucky patrin!!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG you better write him a nasty letter then! I can't believe someone/anyone would be confused by an artist who only uses half-a-dozen or so pseudonyms and personas. Sheesh, some people just ain't got no sense.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Wwhile i applaud the spirit of your post, i just want to say that
the man has a very distinctive voice. If you are familiar with his past work (as the above two reviews claim) it should be apparent even after only one listen that he is on more than just the songs that are credited as "featuring mf doom."

there's a significant difference between saying an album has 2 songs with mf doom verses when its closer to 6 or 7.

its just shoddy writing, because his verses on "no snakes alive" and "the fine print" are fab!

joshd, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Operation Doomsday was the shit. Viktor Vaughn IS THE SHIT.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe someone/anyone would be confused by an artist who only uses half-a-dozen or so pseudonyms and personas.

Wouldn't you recognize, say, Willie Nelson singing if he went by the name Harvis Finkelwert?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

So wait wait regardless of what persona he's using, dude ALWAYS raps about exactly the SAME things with exactly the SAME flow?!?! Why the bunch of pseudonyms then?!?! Why not stick with just one?

Not to mention the fact that it's plausible that someone might use or collaborate with rappers/singers/etc. who sound rather a lot like they do. Why wouldn't you assume that Harvis Finkelwert isn't just a big Willie Nelson fan who sounds quite a lot like Willie?!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess you may...but if you knew Willie was prone to use pseudonyms, and there's all these people with unfamiliar names singing an awfully lot like him on his records, and you are paid to research and review his music, shouldn't it get you at least wondering?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Hey josh, I thought you were talking about me and I was all ready to be like "YOU BITCH, I have Operation Doomsday on vinyl and a homemade shirt that says 'I'm at where your sister went'!". And then I realized that I reviewed Viktor Vaughn and not King Geedorah. To be technical, MF Doom raps on, what, five songs on KG? Fazers and The Fine Print are far and away the standouts and Dumile's verse on 'Anti-Matter' is the toughest thing to come out this year, I think. "Doom with the hog's leg, straight up, New Yorkin'"

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Top ten Doom tracks:

1) MF Doom "Operation: Greenbacks"
2) MF Doom "Dead Bent" (12" version)
3) Viktor Vaughn "Saliva"
4) MF Doom "Red And Gold"
5) MF Doom "Doomsday"
6) Viktor Vaughn "Lickupon"
7) King Geedorah "The Fine Print"
8) MF Doom ft. Kurious "?"
9) MF Doom "Hey!"
10) King Geedorah "Fazers"

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

My fav. Doom track is "Rhymes Like Dimes" just because it flows so well with unexpected lyrics. It seems like everything is spilling out of his mouth and he can't control what he raps. (See the Young Gunz "Can't Stop, Won't Stop" for example.)

But the new "Vaudeville Villain" album is his best overall. It has one of the best great:crap lyric ratios in recent memory. Tons of quotables. Best hip-hop album of 2003.

Rhymes like dimes is a freestyle - maybe best doom track ever
operation doomsday is the best doom album, though I have spent many evenings stoned out of my gourd or tripping and listening to gedorah and v vaughn. his word play is retardulous

dlp9001, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Count Bass D is a very, very, very similar artist. He actually has a song where Doom raps over a beat of his (called "Quite Buttery"). Count Bass D has a couple albums, the best one is Dwight Spitz, he's pretty damn dope.

"Smoke Ernie El's, drink Gin, last name, Baylor"

it sounds like a thom yorke remix. the four tet mixes put the vocals on a different bed of sounds but it still sounded good, this sounds a little jarring

A bacon desert? Anything is possible. (stevie), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 10:08 (sixteen years ago)

i never liked the vv albums cos the beats were boring/too standard underground rap. madvillainy worked cos madlibs beats are kinda undernourished/crumbling too though doom just has an altogether more dilapidated approach to beats which is why his own self produced material works best.

ive a feeling anyone expecting BLT to be like the first taste of a whole new wave of new doom projects is gonna be let down. i dont think doom is really coming back, hes just getting a bit of pocket money.

Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 10:15 (sixteen years ago)

Unfortunately I think ^^^ is totally OTM. The Doom of 2002, 2003 is gone for good it seems. I'm halfway through my first listen of Born Like This and liking it pretty well so far. My only complaint, and a very minor one at that, is that there seems to be more vocal samples of him talking in silly voices than direct rips from TV shows and comics. I mean, those are still there too, but in less amounts than I really like. His flow on "Gazillion Ear" is crazy good though.

um, his debut?

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

Well, Vic Vaughan is by far my favorite. Dark and inventive. Normally I have a lot of time for Doom, but (esp. following lip syncing debacle) it's clear he's struggling for scraps. Some of these are 3 years old, the Rae beat has been used...5 times? Vaughan is mixed too high over old beats (suggesting he was barely in the studio) and there's no concept. 4/10.

paulhw, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

the Rae beat has been used...5 times?

Eh, "UFO" is almost as much of a stock breakbeat as "Funky Drummer" or "Apache" or "Impeach the President". At that point, it's so much a part of the fabric of rap production that any "recycling" criticisms seem beyond the pale.

Whitney Hoosteen (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 05:00 (sixteen years ago)

surprised at the hate for the first VV, up there with Geedorah & Madvillainy for me. the second one really is a stinker though, ugh.

zappi, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 08:19 (sixteen years ago)

It's always good to hear ESG's UFO. I never get tired of hearing it on hip hop records but the fact that it makes up one of the few outstanding tracks on BLT speaks volumes. The sample should just be there to throw newer shit into sharp relief. But the newer shit is just that . . . shit.

Also that Batty Boy track is piss poor. I can't work out what's worse, the suggestion that gay men should be battered with baseball bats or the will-this-do? delivery.

batty boys is a weird track, i'm still trying to work out what he's getting at there.

i don't know where this album is in the ranking of doom albums (i have doomsday, gheedorah, madvilliany, 2nd victor vaughn, some of the herbs and spices mixes) and i don't see why that's particularly important. just because it's his fifth best album or whatever ... a bit like complaining about led zep or black sabbath's fifth best, isn't it?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 2 April 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)

I'm aware of third person narratives etc. And I've been listening to Doom's stuff since about 2000, so I'm aware of what he does.

I just don't think there's that much there to 'get'. This isn't a bad album, just too dull, too lazy.

Doran, Thursday, 2 April 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

Dull and lazy? Maybe compared to Madvillain, but that was a collaboration....to my ears, Bazillion ear thru Rap Ambush and Microwave Mayo thru That's That represent near-perfect Doom...the samples might be old, but the lyrical flow is as dense as ever, so much so that I still pick out new couplets after listening to it 20ish times. If anything, its a rather inconsistant effort, but still as good as any hip-hop released in the last two years. And re: "Batty Boyz", if listened to in the context that its intended (Doom, supervillain, ranking on the homoeroticism of his competition),it is not offensive at all.

I'm not threatening to wrap myself in a rainbow flag and set myself on fire outside Lex's offices (no, not McPherson's offices), I just think it's a bit lame, that's all. The KRS One comparison doesn't hold that much water.

Space Is The Place: Maybe I need to give it another listen - I didn't glean what you did from it but I should probably listen to it again. After all, the bugger did send me a natty, reversible DOOM mask through the post. It's the least I can do.

Doran, Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

I hear "Batty Boyz" as a sendup of rap homophobia as much as anything.

Washing Ton (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

I'd be with you, but there's no big "hey, i'm joking" sign anywhere. its message is left kind of ambiguous

splattergories (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 2 April 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

The big "hey, I'm joking" sign is that it's fucking about Batman and Robin.

he does include a semi-cryptic explanation too: "There's gay choice/no hate debate/becomes a problem when they try to go straight/and raise the monster rate in the whole population/its starting to affect the super-pimpin occupation"

Space Is The Place, Friday, 3 April 2009 10:21 (sixteen years ago)

Also, it's really funny to me that Vast Aire's last album had a track where he's Batman. I don't think this is intended as a Vast dis, though, since they're pretty tight as far as I know.

little confused by the Doom profile in the New Yorker this week. i mean, if you're gonna do something on Doom, why now? ok, so you can bitch about the current state of rap... but again, is Doom really the right stand in for the "Golden Era." very confusing.

i love Doom and the New Yorker but they should really stick to shit like this http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/09/07/090907fa_fact_grann?yrail

Moreno, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

There are a couple funny parts though - Doom driving around LA (or being driven around by his driver who's named after the robot from Short Circuit) getting drunk instead of going to the studio and trying to write a rap about the chimp who killed his owner from the chimps perspective.

Also, excited to hear work's finally being done on another colab w/ Madlib.

terrible kool-aid suppin' paragraph in a guardian profile

Doom's music has always been murky, his samples dusty from all those crates, his voice gruff, his raps torrential bursts of elliptical wordplay too dense and jerkily delivered to be described as "flow", but it's not as forbidding as the metal face suggests. People, he says, miss the humour in his work, and the delight in mischief-making. A couple of years ago, he allegedly sent "fake" Dooms to perform on his behalf at gigs. Even the hardcore faithful were incensed, when really it was an inspired device designed to subvert the notion of rap ego.

o i c

very sexual album (schlump), Thursday, 16 August 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

well poor word choice but i think it's much more slack than the beats on past mf doom and madlib things, less hectic, more stretched out than doom's herbs and spices or madlib's hectic beat collage

Wow RIP MF. I can't begin to say how much this guy means to me. My first date with my wife was a DOOM show in 2004. She rode all the way with me from DC to Philly on a Monday night to see him. Some of his couplets never leave my mind no matter how much I'm currently listening to him. Just the other day in the McDondald's drive thru "oh my aching hands/from raking in grands/and breaking in mic stands." I felt very passionately about this guy in probably a very corny way, but I'll stand by it for life. Operation Doomsday is etched in my brain. The hunger he displays on that album, damn. And I haven't even started on his production skills.

The price hikes for his records online overnight are pretty staggering

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 08:22 (four years ago)

Madvillainy is brilliant but I prefer his own solo stuff, album wise. Madvillainy just had more of a push which is why more people are familiar with it I think. Hos own production is more idiosyncratic and interesting, also just thicker sonically.

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 08:35 (four years ago)

I rarely pay attention to lyrics but listening to Operation Doomsday made me pay attention and made me want to listen to more hip hop artists. His flow, his voice, his lyrics and how great the beats sounded.

Madvillainy is also brilliant and one of the best hip hop albums I’ve ever heard but I hope his legacy ends up in people looking past that album and listening how great the rest of his work is. Lots of gems amongst his other monikers and collaboratios.

Was The New Danger post-Rawkus? i could do it. Not gonna let it not happen like. But let's give it a month or two. Is that kind of thing the poll volunteer's call? I've followed a few of these things but only taken part once.

That nyt podcast wasnt bad. Dante Ross was the best. Bobbito talked too much about fondle em. Caramanica kept talking about dooms textures, which is right, but it's also about the weird rhythms, the off, rza ish sense of timing. Like a much looser prince Paul.

listening to special herbs and spices, i forgot how good him and mf grimm were together. dooms beats during this period were absolutely fire. people focus on the more whimsical, quirky stuff, but he also had some absolutely volcanic bangers.

candyman, Sunday, 10 January 2021 18:48 (four years ago)

i never liked the vv albums cos the beats were boring/too standard underground rap. madvillainy worked cos madlibs beats are kinda undernourished/crumbling too though doom just has an altogether more dilapidated approach to beats which is why his own self produced material works best.

If there's one catalog album I've played by any artist since Jan. 1, it's Operation: Doomsday. Every day in my car.

Poll's going to get started when the Todd Rundgren results rollout is done. It's everything but bootlegs. KMD, MF DOOM and all other aliases, all productions, features, herbs, blends, go nuts and I'll sort it out. Will link the poll here when it's up!

man I can't remember most of his titles. One of those artists whose albums I just play and the titles don't matter a damn.

There won't be an exhaustive list of what's eligible. Good resources I've found for stray tracks are Genius and RYM.

maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 24 March 2021 22:54 (four years ago)

i hear ya. thought i'd give a heads up!

maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 24 March 2021 22:55 (four years ago)

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 19 April 2021 21:08 (four years ago)

two weeks pass...

New album with Czarface, apparently was a delayed release cuz Covid. On first listen I like it more than the last one, much better production. Whole thing is like 25 minutes.

seems suspiciously like it could be scraps and leftovers from their previous sessions, but maybe im wrong and its totally legit. does seem odd to have held off on it for so long.

candyman, Friday, 7 May 2021 13:29 (four years ago)

does it matter?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 May 2021 13:49 (four years ago)

no, but its fun to speculate.

candyman, Friday, 7 May 2021 13:51 (four years ago)

there has to be so many half finished DOOM projects with ppl out there

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 May 2021 13:57 (four years ago)

wonder what will happen to the one with flying lotus he was working on.

candyman, Friday, 7 May 2021 14:00 (four years ago)

I dunno really. If that was the case, wouldn't "The Missing Notebook Rhymes" have been more substantial? One of them was JJ DOOM's "Pause Tape" with JJ's verse lopped off. And the trouble that project caused with people DOOM owed music to.

A lot of people feeling like there's gonna be a Madvillainy sequel but I'd be kinda surprised to see it.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 7 May 2021 14:04 (four years ago)

xp

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 7 May 2021 14:04 (four years ago)

I thought Madlib said it was coming?

My feeling is that there's probably a lot of stuff half finished, and frankly, I'd imagine his wife and children could use whatever money can come in via new releases

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 May 2021 14:18 (four years ago)

guest verses from del and dmc, wow

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Friday, 7 May 2021 14:23 (four years ago)

Did he? There was all this noise about how it's "85% done" (which has been the case for like a decade) and something about DOOM's manager giving his blessing. At the moment Stones Throw can sell as much of the original as they print. I have no doubt they'll get around to some new Madvillain product but I think it's more likely to be a collection of mostly already-released stray tracks or an EP of the ones that didn't get an official release yet. It's hard to imagine there's a lot that hasn't gotten any airing at all yet (or doesn't contain verses that ended up on another thing). But then 25 minute albums are a thing now.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 7 May 2021 14:26 (four years ago)

And the trouble that project caused with people DOOM owed music to.

yeah my sense is theres probably a lot of unreleased/half-finished music around and not a lot of consensus about who owns it

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Friday, 7 May 2021 14:49 (four years ago)

Got to be some doom stuff sitting at home with his family. Impossible that there wouldnt be, even if it's just beats.

eh so this new album is not enough DOOM and way too much Eso. Not barrel scrapings exactly but nothing revelatory or crucial either

i had no idea re him having any connection to leeds.

Yeah i know. Wondering if he was living in the UK at the time so that he could get NHS treatment? Anyway what a sad and somewhat mundane way to go :(

NickB, Thursday, 6 July 2023 20:52 (two years ago)

so many mysteries surrounded his death - like, wasn't he supposed to have died some time before his family made it public?

serving aunt (stevie), Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:08 (two years ago)

this story, though... what a waste. what a tragedy.

he was born in the uk, grew up and lived in the us and then was deported later in life iirc

Bongo Jongus, Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:10 (two years ago)

knew he was born in london, didn't know about the deportation though. any idea why?

NickB, Thursday, 6 July 2023 21:13 (two years ago)

seems complicated but partially because paperwork was too expensive/never filed when he was a kid, and then a buncha stuff never went through as it should've when he was an adult, plus he kept getting arrested, seems pretty kafkaesque

Slick Rick similarly faced deportation to the UK (Jesus, where IS he?)
