Alright, let's take this a step further, then. Let's say....and this is a big hypothetical....that Beyonce isn't a sleek, factory-designed machine whose sole directive is pop cultural saturation at any cost. Let's say she's a living, breathing, sentient human being in full command of all her senses and emotions. In such an instance, surely she would've done the necessary research into Jay-Z's lyrical canon and gleaned that the man in question has a penchant for self-mythology and flagrant misogyny. Would she assume?: (a) that's it's an all an act, and that's he's actually a very nice gentleman with nothing but good intentions and respect for fidelity or (b) he's a potty-mouthed rogue with a grave problem keeping his pants on, but oooh...I can change him. Both options seem pretty naive to me. But hey, it's her life.

to get back to the original question, i assume that if their relationship is like anybody else's relationship, it's probably pretty damn complicated. i assume, especially since beyonce is an entertainer herself, that she can easily distinguish between jay-z her actual boyfriend and jay-z the entertainer with a product to sell and an image to maintain. and on the other hand, i also assume that she understands that even within the complete fiction of most pop lyrics there's at least a little bit of truth, and i imagine she regularly calls jay-z on those little truths and that uncomfortable discussions occasionally ensue.

that's how normal relationships work, and assuming that alex didn't actually, literally mean that beyonce is a replicant, and that he doesn't have actual, literal knowledge to that end, i'll just go ahead and assume that they have a basically normal relationship like that.

I'm siding with Alex for *most* (let's remember this word for when I get lynched later in thread) of the thread. The only person that seems caught on race is Solange who's constantly trying to turn all criticism of Beyonce into justification for a near DPZish paranoia about racism.

And see, that's the problem with the thread in general: it asks a question that demands that one humanize a pop star (in this case Beyonce) and get inside of his/her thinking process. So any criticism or support is ultimately as dud as the thread, I think. I don't think Beyonce is necessarily a machine, but I don't really care to get into her thought process nor have any interest in her personal life. Maybe she wonders about it, and maybe she doesn't. I have my own problems (and the related ones of my friends) to deal with.

the original issue that I think Solange raised & got quickly overlooked is the disparity between how the two parts of the power couple have marketed themselves individually.
Beyonce was relatively clean & wholesome, christian, eminently suburban (at least until Wyclef remixed DC), whereas Jay-Z has long presented himself as master of the game, applying the same smarts he used to rule the mean streets to the music biz.

However, it's certainly not as much a mismatch as, say, Paula Abdul and Emilio Estevez.

I think it's a little out of context to site Big Pimpin' lyrics as evidence of Jay-Z now...It seems like his lyrics have started to become less misogynistic and pimp-oriented since his relationship with Beyonce started....For example, his verse on Frontin' was downright needy and pretty vulnerable for Jay-Z, and there isn't very much player type stuff on the Black Album...at least in comparison to the past. Xpost, that reading would be a major reach. Youre being much too generous. There is also the line about beating up the box like Tyson, which while maybe just about hard sex so hey whatever, is also just a bit weird for a song about being drunk in love (as opposed to the whisper song). But then idk if Jay z has any good sex raps that arent cringe. In fairness many of beyonce's lines about sex are also cringe. His are just worse.

On lemonade and 444, yeah, they were def designed to corroborate a p.r. story but in 2013? Was the story to flirt with legends of domestic abuse? I just see it as standard fare rap lyrics, but stuck in the wrong place.
