500 Greatest Extreme/Noise Albums Of All Time!

Cuz that rolling stone list WAS really boring. this should be more interesting.this is also inspired by that power violence thread and a bunnybrains cd i am listening to. i don't care how you define extreme or noise. it should just be something that makes you go ouch or whooooboy! ideally, it should also be something that you actually like and enjoy or at least something that you are impressed by or that makes your jaw drop. all genres welcome. i'm hoping to get a long list of things i can buy someday when i'm rich. has anyone ever written an extreme music buying guide? maybe i should. that might be fun. and deafening! so, go to town, noiseheads!

i'm starting small(numbers don't reflect greatness-have to start somewhere)

1)Discordance Axis-The inalienable dreamless (i love this album. i have to get a copy of that early years comp.)
2)Bunnybrains-Live in New Heaven,2001 (this is just great noise of the bashing and flailing variety. and surprisingly noisy even for the bunnybrains. it's great! and i listened to years of bad bunnybrain noise so i know the difference. find the thread on ilm where my brother offers up free copies. just send him your address. am i pimping for him? nah, he is revered in japan and belgium, he doesn't need me to pimp for him. i should mention that when i saw him over thanksgiving he had a two live rabbits and a duck in the back of his car. maybe don't send him your address after all)

3. Khanate - 'Khanate'. Um, technical doom taken to new extremes of agonising slowness by (ex)members of OLD, Burning Witch, Blind Idiot God etc. I would write more but I'm going to go to lunch instead

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i love that album too. and the louder you play it the better(and scarier)it sounds. i remember seeing old when they were old lady drivers opening for the young gods years ago and i kept thinking:"How did they arrive at that sound?" it was ugly and cool and just so....i dunno, weird.

scott seward, Friday, 5 December 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

19)Cephalic Carnage-Lucid Interval (this album has really grown on me. i like the way they mix things up from track to track. the electronics on it were done by some guy from happy pappy. has anyone ever heard happy pappy?)
20)Converge-Jane Doe (this album is heavy and noisy enough to make a list like this i suppose, but what i like about it is how EMOTIONALLY extreme it is. i think it's a beautiful album. i called them an emo band on ilm somewhere and someone got mad at me. i refuse to call them screamo. emotional extremes are a valid criteria too. if someone were to list scott walker's Tilt it would fit)

i'm hoping some jazznoiseheads will pitch in on here.

brock (brock), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Skullflower - Xaman -- the sound of brain erupting through skull.

Iannis Xenakis - Bohor I -- funny how electronically manipulated rattling jewelry can sound like dying, screaming human beings. Extreme because it makes you realize how easily suggestible those sorts of descriptions actually are, how strenuously we try to find recognizable patterns in seeming chaos.

104. Isis - Celestial

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

105. Boyd Rice - Black Album

From TrouserPress:
The first album by California conceptualist Boyd Rice (one of the first avant-garde "musicians" to use turntables as a creative tool) offers no information beyond the artist's name (embossed on the all-black cover), that it was recorded in the mid-'70s and is "playable at any speed." The droning noise slices, which are not audibly ascribable to any specific instruments, seem to consist of short tape loops layered over one another to create repetitive but varying textures (like Frippertronics, but without the guitar) that slow down and speed up on their own. Unlistenable.

22. JOMF- Majick fire Co. You Must be shitting me right?

I don't own that album, so I don't really know if it's a noisy one or not, but I have to say in their defence that the first time I saw Jackie-O was with the two saxes & umpteen guitar line-up, and they were pretty fucking ferocious. Second time round they were not so hot though...

NickB (NickB), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't call it "noise" by any stretch of the definition, but I think there's a perfectly sound case to call it "extreme", in the way they spin out their basic elements so far out. Or are you just saying it's shit?

"Flussdichte" -- Asmus Tietchens/David Lee Myers
"The Place Where The Black Stars Hang" -- Lustmord (not all noise is loud)
"Shouting at the Ground" -- Zoviet France (ditto)
"Corale" -- Luigi & Antonio Russolo (electronic noise from the 1920's!)

"Buda_Rom" -- Voice Crack/Gunter Muller

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 5 December 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, how could I forget, the ouevre of JLIAT (James Whitehead):

191. "Noise" -- a recording of nuclear bomb tests from the '40's and '50's, quite possibly the loudest sounds on earth unless there's a CD of earthquakes out there somewhere.
192. "Hilbert's Hotel" -- a 73-minute pipe organ chord
193. "The Nature of Nature" -- pretty much just an album-length electronic tone
194. "When We Focus on Nothing As Opposed to the Set or Subset of Infinite Events..." -- a DIFFERENT 70+ minute chord
195. "The Grandi Series (Ambient): Still Life #7" -- data on the CD, but your stereo won't make noise from it. But it's an album. Is it noise or not?
196. "Well Tempered Clavier" -- Bach excerpts played on a keyboard with drum patches programmed into the keys

Also the Hafler Trio:

197. "Mastery of Money"
198. "Kill The King"
199. "Play the Hafler Trio"

Not numbered/included due to lack of titular information:

-- The Christian Marclay records which were laid on a gallery floor and packaged up after crowds had walked on them repeatedly

-- Also, surely I can't be the only one blasted/curious/nerdy/perverse enough to have listened to stereo test records in the same fashion as "music", with no equipment testing going on, hence listeing to a sequence of pure tones and stereo pans.

Actually, all of JLIAT's discography (James Whitehead's) qualifies for this list, but if one devotes a career, as he has, to extreme noise, in my eyes it raises the bar for inclusion of only the most extreme example.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 10 January 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i enjoyed the actual cd. i think i listened to most of it. but even you will have to admit that 155 songs on one cd is a good definition of "extreme".

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 10 January 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i think we are just looking at extreme differently -- im connecting it up to more of a noise thing, which i dont think superfine fits into comfortable. if its just extreme, then yeah -- that many songs on one album would fit as well as half japanese's 3LP debut on armageddon (not counting singles and tapes).

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 10 January 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"noise" is more easily defined i think. "extreme" is definitely in the eye of the beholder. way up top, i mentioned that if someone were to list Scott Walker's Tilt it would be an understandable choice. It's extreme emotionally and unsettling and yet it's not noise or anything. i was being a little silly with the liquid tapedeck and the jad, but they fit well enough for me in that they go above and beyond and over the top length-wise and are, to say the least, an acquired taste.over the top can equal extreme. how many people will ever have the fortitude to listen to all 155 songs? besides died-in-the-wool half jap fans.but i will put a lid on the silly only cuz i don't want people to start listing barry manilow box-sets or otherwise trad bores that people find irritating to the max. NOT that i'm comparing jad and barry! although, i'm sure they would get along famously.(this is why i listed Wagner. not cuz it's noise but cuz it's a challenge. both physically and mentally. listening to 155 jad fair songs, to me, is a challenge both physical and mental. and yet, i could listen to grindcore and death metal and sheet metal scraping layabouts all the live long day without blinking an eye.)

[intermission - dunno if you've read this scott, but its apposite to this thread i think - noise!]

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 11 January 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark Sinker's noise epic! Yah, there is some my-t-fine craziness there. dunno if i have the smarts to get it all, but even the stuff i don't get is a pleasure to read. i do believe that frank kogan sent a variation and/or version of that thing in an e-mail to me before i had ever gone on ilm. if i remember correctly. i was impressed then and i'm still impressed. Is he writing a book? i thought i read somewhere that he was. kogan needs to write a book too. and don allred as well. and dave q. ilm has the mad genius territory covered! me, i was supposed to write 200 words on an oneida album and after a month i gave up cuz i'm so braindead. i don't know what my problem is. i must be saving up all my strength for my book NOISE ANNOYS:A BUYER'S GUIDE TO THE 500 GREATEST EXTREME MUSIC RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME (has that title already been taken? who should i pitch it to? Da Capo? Feral House?) maybe i should just be the editor and get everyone here to write entries. we should all be famous probably. anyone know anyone in publishing?

I got my Bunny Brains "Live in New Haven" CD today! Yay! God knows how long it's been sitting in my mailbox, but there it was.

But why was it shipped from Belgium?

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it is actually a belgian release. my brother was making cdr's of the belgian cdr's and giving them to people, i dunno, maybe he ran out and had to fax belgium for reinforcements.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how whenever I wear my Merzbow shirt and someone who knows who he is always asks me "Do you think there really is a Merzcar?" or "Do you have the Merzbox?" I've been trying to think of more witty comments to reply with. so far I've just used "Only some of it" or "yeah, but I hate it."

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

393: The British Electric Foundation "Music For Listening to..."
This is basically Heaven 17 fresh after being booted out of Human League, and this EP is their sorta demo for their first album "Penthouse and Pavement", well, the first side at least. The second side is stuff that rivals early Cabaret Voltaire on the harrowing, loud, electronic noise front.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

dan selzer did get that one upthread, but it escaped the number count, so 393 it is, yep that one's on the list for the original version of 'I Got The Fear' alone... also dave q had three that escaped:

449. Esplendor Geometrico -EG 1 (1981, cassette only)

According to their website (link below) there are only 300 of these, and I managed to own three of them. Who knows what I did with them? But this cassette, the only EG I ever owned (they've released heaps, judging from the website) is burned into my brain. It's the drum machione rhythms that are disorted to buggery and predate gabba - and around the beats, inky blackness and weirdly pitch-shifted effects and Spanish vocals.

484. Pretty much anything by the ever-charming Anal Cunt. For noise, we'll go with the classic "You Play on a Softball Team." For extreme, it has to be alienating their own fans with an album of acoustic love ballads, "I Respect Your Feelings as a Woman and a Human" being a prime example.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 16 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The title of the thread says Extreme/Noise album, right? Because have you heard that Michael Bolton album? That guy is taking it to a whole nother level - Merzbow and Keiji Haino could learn a thing or two from him. Pure sonic mayhem, I tell ya.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 16 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

if purity is what you're after...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 January 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Regarding Ivor.

Without being funny or ironic, it open up a whole world for me when I heard it at a very early age, and contextually *was* an extreme listen.

mzui, Friday, 16 January 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ivor rules.
he's going to a field . to grow wheat.
someone needs to reissue that stuff it's the best.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Well done Scott! Now, what order would you put them in?

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, that was kinda hard. it's still not perfect. i tried to get rid of duplicates and such.we were at 500 a while ago it seems. the numbers were all screwy.

Hah, Udu! i dunno. good question.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

well done scott! was fun. duplicates: 117/122, 17/165, 461/463.

I own 98 of 'em (contributing 38 titles helped of course).

(Jon L), Saturday, 17 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, how did i miss that venetian snares thing. the earth 2 thing is more understandable.and that 461/463 thing is just a goof by me. yeah, but three duplicates ain't bad. just replace them with 3 from those 11 extra ones. that'll do the trick.
and Milton, thanks tons for all the names. thanks to everybody. that was fun. Julio's name sure came up a lot.i didn't count how many were his, but its a lot.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 17 January 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

... now someone make a rough guide to the 500 greatest extreme/noise albums of all time.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 17 January 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

also: I'm really glad that Crass made the list.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 17 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a goodly amount of jazznoise on that list, but i can't help but feel that there was a freejazz freak that missed this thread.no ayler or shepp on it. or any of the zillion records i've never heard that probably make ayler and shepp sound like a day in the park. where's thurston when you need him?

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 17 January 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

he's gotta take a break sometime d00d!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 17 January 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

or any of the zillion records i've never heard that probably make ayler and shepp sound like a day in the park.

See 468/481: The Marco Eneidi Coalition - s/t cassette.

And the origianl 483, "Mourning Glory," from Ween's Pure Guava disc, looks to have been overlooked, as it doesn't appear in the final comprehensive list of 500.

And RRR500 has to be at #501; otherwise we have a disc of supposedly 500 inclusions that really only has 499 due to the recursive nature of its own self-inclusion. If you can dig that.

A Note of clarification:

"338 to live and shave in l.a.2-kill misty:threnody/300 dollar silk shirt"

It's common knowledge that this album is actually a Chicago radio session taken from the original To Live and Shave in L.A.'s 1999 tour. After the group broke up (or went on vacation or haitus, or whatever it is they did until they reformed in 2004), the supporting musicians from the '99 tour bootlegged the tapes, added the "2," and undertook a brief, satirical tour to promote themselves.

So, even tho it's "2," the album (338) is really TLASILA "1".

--Matt C.

Matt Clark, Jr., Friday, 9 April 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

also Nom De Plume's Christian Marclay submission which ended up being 209:

>The Christian Marclay records which were laid on a gallery floor and packaged up after crowds had walked on them repeatedly

I misidentified this as "Record Without a Cover", it's actually "Footsteps"

(Jon L), Friday, 9 April 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

RE: To Live And Shave - Not common knowledge to me! Someone gave me that cd and i just wrote down what was on the cover for the purposes of this list. Thanks for the info!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 9 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott - the TLASILA radio session dated from October 22, 1999, and was broadcast live over WNUR-FM, Chicago. The "Kill Misty" album is identical to the WNUR broadcast, apart from some editing and digital equalization done after the fact. The line-up is identical, but the song titles (which were announced over the air by Tom Smith) were changed for the bootleg, and all between song announcements were deleted. TLASILA 2 did their best to cover their tracks, but in the end too many people had heard the broadcast, and put 2+2 together. I have both the WNUR session and the "Misty" boot, and they are one and the same. TLASILA 2 was a scam group, although a pretty funny one!

as long as to live & shave in la is a topic of conversation, i'd like to nominate their 1st album, '30-minuten mannercreme', and their last (before reforming), 'the wigmaker'. both are amazing, unlike anything before or since, as unique as merzbow, whitehouse, scott walker, jandek, xenakis, anyone. very cool and important music.

the highlight of my trip to nova scotia last summer was finding a copy of TL&SILA's helen butte vs. masonna pussy badsmell in a dollar bin.

new noise releases that have tickled my fancy:
-prurient/kites split LP
-hair police - rattler's echo
-burning star core tape on chondritic sound
-dead machines - plays the night shift
-ceylon mange tape on since 72 (holy shit; where do i get more of this stuff??? totally amazing.)

"the highlight of my trip to nova scotia last summer was finding a copy of TL&SILA's helen butte vs. masonna pussy badsmell in a dollar bin."

awesome! that's a crazy album, tho imho not as intense or bracing (or exploratory) as 'wig'.

great list you've given us. who exactly are ceylon mange, btw? isn't that a side project of the decaer pinga loons?

sindra

sindra st. clair, Saturday, 10 April 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to say ceylon mange is somehow related to dylan nyoukis/decaer pinga... i think ILX's very own roger adultery has played with them??

Oh hey! I'm just discovering the wonderful world of ILX. This thread has been dormant for a while, and I confess I haven't read it all yet. Anyone in there a Merzbow fan? I have the Merzbox, and it is monumental!

But, in specifically answering the question, Merzbow - Akasha Gulva.

Thanks fetchboy.

Mister, it appears to be a concentrated noisehead discussion area. It's going to take me a while to figure out ILX.....any discussion concentrated on Merzbow or the Mmerzbox in there?

Cheers.

Darren Skuja (Darren Skuja), Thursday, 23 November 2006 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

"concentrated noisehead discussion area"...?

not really. it seems to be the dank basement where the ilx mods sequester the deformed cousins.

Merzbow threads

Onimo has bone for the pink overload! (GerryNemo), Thursday, 23 November 2006 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

it has little to do with being sequestered and much more to do with a general distaste for standard ILX bullshit. (insert uk/isle of faggotry joke here.) xp

I hope scott hasn't given up his dreams of turning this thread into a book yet

one idea is to start another thread, and invite people who contributed to this thread to re-post short descriptions of the albums contributed

sort of want to do that to the 'top 100 ambient albums' thread as well

Sick Things - Sounds of Silence. The Australian band whose members would go on to Fungus Brains, Venom P Stinger, and the Dirty Three. Massive, if maybe unintentional, distortion. Not too hard to find online.

Michael Train, Saturday, 15 March 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, but that leaves around 391 that are pretty difficult I'd wager.

I know, right?, Sunday, 16 March 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

i lost my copy of joe colley - desperate attempts at beauty. ;_; what a thing. he's kind of a hardcore analog sound artist type, lots of metal balls in speaker cones and elaborate feedback vs. natural processes vs. physical space conceptual pieces but they SOUND UNNNBELIEVABLE. 'desperate attempts' has a lot of field recordings in there too, ice cracking in water mostly? anyway, it's really nerve-wracking and controlled. 'untitled piece for prepared chord organ, microphones, and electronic motors' is more ethereal but just as alien as is 'anthem: static for empty life." don't be put off by the titles! those last two are some of the best "ambient" i've ever heard, super super super dense and warm.

i know drumm has already been mentioned, but he really is fantastic. 'impish tyrant' is my fav. raw raw raw raw raw raw raw. and riffs!
