What's to hate about Kid Rock?

I mean, shit, I ain't about to buy dude's records or nuthin,' but seems to me he's a perfcet hybrid of Diamond Dave and Hank Jr, totally aware of himself and seems to really enjoy what he's doing. Certainly entertaining. Why do music geeks hate him (and don't cite his mainstream-ness as a reason, with all the rampant Missy worship running unabated around here)?

What's not to hate about Kid Rock?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

...didn't we just have this thread?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

he's not a cowboy!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

He's been boring as fuck lately. He pulled a goddamn Sea Change. His DJ does southern-rock better than him. All valid reasons to be annoyed. And if Devil Without A Cause was your cup of tea, it's reason to hate (I only heard Devil once and the non-singles didn't grab me. But I'm withholding judgement until I hear it again).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, I've just been questioning some of my formerly punkrock ideas about mainstream music, and the pompous 'goes without saying' school of thought. Since recently discovering, in a moment of humbling clarity, how talented Rob Zombie is, I've learned to differentiate between the truly, indefensibly awful (Staind, Creed, latter-day Limp Bizkit, Dave Matthews, Insane Clown Posse) and the stuff that's actually decent (in some cases great) despite the fact that it's popular (System of A Down, some others I can't think of now). The Kid is just my latest curiosity - his music is bad, but no worse that Linkin Park's (and that "Crawling" song was kinda catchy), and after watching his xmas special, i have to wonder if his only crime against we ILM geeks is that his music isn't reverential to Sonic Youth's legacy or whatever. So?

roger adultery, Monday, 15 December 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of ILXors like his Devil Without A Cause stuff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

If anything the problem with his new stuff is its too damn reverent.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate him because of his aesthetic, and the particlar mess of values he embodies. That is to say, the following things put me off: sleaze, meanness, petty rage, spite, misogyny, crudeness, sex, smarm, arrogance. Yeah, basically I hate rock'n'roll. I haven't heard his new one as I stay away from everything the man does. Is it any different, apart from genre?

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

He's an idiot. What more needs be said?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

AC/DC are idiots too; does that make them automatically hateable?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

AC/DC are not idiots.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

have you read their interviews?!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I give up, then!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

AC/DC may not be rocket scientists, but they're savvy enough to know how to stay in the game for a long stretch. Moreover, they're humble guys....unlike Kid Rock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

?!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

kid rock hasn't exactly dropped off the face of the earth yet alex, unless you have access to fiddo's crystal ball.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright then...new terminology. Kid Rock is a DICK!. Defend that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, now I'M confused...

roger adultery, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No he hasn't, but I doubt he'll have as long a run as AC/DC have enjoyed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - i remember an interview with angus circa 2 live crew trial where he decryed their music as 'crass' and the interviewer was all 'um, what about 'giving the dog a bone'?' and angus went all 'it's a metaphor innit' and how his mom thought it was actually about giving the dog a bone.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

rock stars in being dicks shocker!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the question isn't whether they're savvy or humble, it's about whether they're rocket scientists. and you say yourself they're not. so OK then.

xpost

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile, AC/DC are still playing stadiums....and where are 2 Live Crew today?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

what does this have to do with being dicks and/or stupid?!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, stop me if I'm wrong, but you don't seem to even like rock. What can you add here?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

alex can i ask you that the next time you pop into an r&b thread?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC on various R&B threads to thread!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost of the night!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My head hurts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

what does this have to do with being dicks and/or stupid?!

Nothing, but it means AC/DC's music has more staying power than 2 Live Crew's.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

alex you turned on a radio lately?

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

watch your metaphors, Alex

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

alex can i ask you that the next time you pop into an r&b thread?

Certainly. Well, I do like some pop. It's the exceptionally rare bit of r&b that I like...or at least more contemporary r&b.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

watch your metaphors, Alex

Knew someone was going to jump all over that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

2 live crew are the rosetta stone of all hip-hop from 1996 onward.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "all hip-hop"

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

whereas ac/dc influenced steve albini.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

alex you turned on a radio lately?

Are you suggesting that you've heard 2 Live Crew on the radio recently?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Knew someone was going to jump all over that.

keep digging! (and Dan Perry to thread!)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

correction: all good hip-hop

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "all good hip-hop"

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My comment wasn't a sweeping indictment of hip-hop. It was targeted solely at 2 live Crew (we are straying off topic here.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"haha"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY, MATOS

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody here prepared to defend Uncle Kracker?

ben welsh (benwelsh), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm suggesting i've heard alot more music that wouldn't have happened without 2 live crew lately than i've music that wouldn't have happened without ac/dc (though i have heard 2 live crew on the radio lately also)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "straying"

haha "haha"

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

miccio vaguely defends uncle kracker when he puts down current kid rock

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "the real enemy"

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Luke Skyywalker, yesterday.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think 'being a dick' is the issue here at all, because i could see myself sharing a beer with Bob Ritchie, Angus Young, AND Luke Skywalker, no problemo. I think it'd be hard, however, to get through a round without punching Julian Casablancas, Ryan Adams, or Christian Aguilera in the fucking face.

roger adultery, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm suggesting i've heard alot more music that wouldn't have happened without 2 live crew lately than i've music that wouldn't have happened without ac/dc (though i have heard 2 live crew on the radio lately also)

Do you really consider 2 Live Crew that influential? I don't claim to be a hip hop historian by any stretch, but that doesn't sound entirely credible to me. But hey....whatever mows your lawn. Kid Rock, meanwhile, is almost a bizarre hybrid of 2 Live Crew and AC/DC.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Uncle Kracker needs to make a rekkid with Sugar Ray. It would blow up on VH1.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

why does luke records' logo have a mcdonalds fryguy on it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex nailed just what I like about Kid Rock.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My initial point was that Kid Rock seems just unlikeable to me. He seems like a belligerent, jingoistic, too patriotic redneck. I don't know about you, but I find those characteristics a bit repellant. Thus, I'm not fond of him (I don't think I'd say I hate him,....I reserve that verb for other artists). But, as far as I'm concerned, there are plenty of reasons not to like him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - jess i think he's trying to get as close to 'skywalker' as he can without arousing lucas

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

alex ts: lil jon vs. the darkness

Don't really know enough about either, but I certainly prefer Lil Jon's "Get Low" to the Darkness' "Thing Called Love" (the only songs I've heard from either).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Gents, I have to retire for the evening. I'm sure you have lots of slings and arrows with my Kid Rock-disrespecting name on'em, but they'll have to wait `til tomorrow. Cheers.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet my left testicle that after Hank Jr. croaks Kid Rock takes over the "Are You Ready For Some Football?!" gig on Monday Night Football.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

he's not a redneck, he grew up in a mansion. If anything, his faux-populism is what annoys me, but maybe he's just reflecting the times.

hstencil, Monday, 15 December 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

that was SO EASY!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, the new album is only Sea Change if Atlanta Rhythm Section and Blackfoot are not distinguishable from Nick Drake. Which they are.

And again: His ballads >>>>>>>> Black Crowes's ballads. No contest.

iTunes shaken to the core!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7459796.stm

US music star Kid Rock is refusing to put his albums on iTunes because he says artists do not get paid enough for downloads from the Apple store.

Kid Rock is one of the last few acts not fully signed up to the service.

He said it was based on "an old system, where iTunes takes the money, the record company takes the money, and they don't give it to the artists".

VeronaInTheClub, Thursday, 19 June 2008 02:40 (seventeen years ago)

the worst thing about Kid Rock is that what little charm his records used to have is gone now. he doesn't even rap on any of the 3 singles off of his current album, and I sure as hell don't wanna hear that guy sing.

some dude, Thursday, 19 June 2008 02:43 (seventeen years ago)

He kinda raps -- because he's a shitty singer -- on that new tune where he drives around in his speedboat karaoking to a band playing a combination of "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Werewolves of London" badly.

Gorge, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)

Was Kid Rock's "Only God Knows Why", the first blatant use of Auto-tune in a song?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMk2fClfOjg

Most places on the net cite Cher's "Believe" as being first, but while that was released as a single in October of 98, Devil Without a Cause was released in August of that year, even thought it didn't seem to start getting hit singles till like summer of 99. Or is there an even lesser known example that predate both?

did a stadium tour with tickets capped at $20 through official sellers. which was mainly Wal-Mart.
Also negotiated beer prices down to $4 each and parking to $0. Plus has ZZ Top and Kool & the Gang opening. So very worth the price of admission, even/especially if you don't drink or stay to watch Kid Rock.

Country rocker and rapper Kid Rock was caught on video lashing out at Oprah Winfrey in a vulgar rant while on stage at his Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N' Roll Steakhouse in Nashville, Tennesee, NBC News reports.

"I’m like, Oprah Winfrey or Joy Behar, they can suck d--- sideways," Rock said, according to the video published on TMZ Friday.

“F--- Oprah Winfrey and f--- Kathie Lee Gifford,” he continued saying as someone in the audience described him as a "blackout drunk.” Rock continuously repeated the same phrases throughout his rant against Winfrey and other women who have hosted talk shows until he suddenly believed he would be accused of being racist based on his on stage remarks.

“To those who would say, “‘Well, I’m pretty sure Kid Rock’s a racist,”” he said, “I’m, like, ‘Fine. F--- off,’ sideways.”
After his outburst against Winfrey, "The View" co-host Joy Behar and TV presenter Kathie Lee Gifford, Rock was reluctantly escorted offstage by the venue's security team.
