Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Unicorn Hard On is a great band name. Is there a band called "Sonic Youth Side Projects," or do they mean side projects of the band Sonic Youth? Because if it's the former, that's almost as good as "Unicorn Hard On."

Either way, I wish I was in NY!

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i heard about this for a month now...hair police are supposed to be great live. this is basically the same fest that they had in minneapolis last year...which i heard was excellent.

either way, $12 per show is really decent.

jp, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone in NYC, buy me beer and get me sex.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

just set up your game of risk at the shows. you'll be fighting off the two or three women in attendance.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Generally speaking, I don't go to Brooklyn. But I might, for Arthur Doyle.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"I don't go to Brooklyn"

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

there be monsters!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon: are you going to crash at my place? We have COUCHES.

No Fun Fest is going to be balls out rock and roll fun. Hair Police ought to be amazing--I will suggest smoking lots of dank herbs that weekend. Val/Breathmint Rekkids booked the downstairs room on Sunday, so that's why it's all "those kids." Looking forward to see BSC, Sightings & Wolf Eyes, as always.

The o'Rourke/Flaherty/Corsano/some dude lineup was awesome when they played with laserbeast. the 'acktion unit' or whatever ought to be similarly fucked.

Jon: Nate has a radio show on WKCR on Mondays from 1-4am. I didn't listen last night because I was a sleepy boy. But I imagine it's lots of great noises noises.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian, I will bring you tasty drugs.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm a sad panda because it looks like i'll be out of town on sunday, which is the night i'd most like to see. also sad panda because the whole thing is at north 6, one of my least favorite venues.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

all venues here suck equally, it seems. for different reasons, but none of them are all that great. :(

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed. it's unfortunate.
n6 has a high school gym vibe that i hate, poor acoustics, pricey drinks, and a very narrow stage that makes things quite difficult.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm considering it... hrrm.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, if i miss out on sunday's show it's because i'm en route to sf.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, what's going on out here?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, stuff. you know.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it's time for EMAIL!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

MAYBE SO!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring me drugs

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

how about deluxe travel scrabble instead?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

TLASILA? Who? What? A tribute band? The real thing?

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

march 20th is my birfday

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

TO AND SHAVE IN LA WHAT'RE THEY DOING!!!!!!!!!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This looks like fun, but only in spurts.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren's just putting on an act. She's going to San Francisco to get AWAY from the crazy noise bands. She's going to a renaissance fair.

Scott, you know what they say....Fun comes in spurts.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

dan... SHHHHHHHH!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooooh...count me in, too.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(p.s. - like someone who went to horror movie makeup seminars should even talk.)

xpost

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be there for sure -- i have to write about it!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'll go for at least some of it anyhow.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

special effects are cool! Excuse me, FX. Did you learn anything from that movie, what's it called? Oh yeah, FX.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope I can be there for most of it. The reformed TLASILA will supposedly be Tom Smith, Rat Bastard, Weasel Walter, maybe Misty Martinez.

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The only TLASILA I have is helen butte vs. masonna pussy badsmell. i rarely listen to it because my roommate's a tool and i only get scant chance to listen to noise when he's around.

ian johonsssnn, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and DOUBLE LEOPARDS!! and DEAD MACHINES!! those will also rule.

and why are the wold eyes side projects in the basement? won't they draw lots of people? do i over-estimate the audience for this shit?

JON: there are so many cute lit majors in my british postcolonialism class. amazing.

ian johnsosnsn, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott, you know what they say....Fun comes in spurts.

Funny, love doesn't but fun does.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

gonna be there for damn sure. anyone want to put me up?

brock (brock), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

with an email that appears to say "i heart scabies," I'm guessing no.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I will trade drugs for sex.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

brock: e-mail me when it gets closer to the fest; my roommates might be out of town (spring break)

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian - The BSC are not playing. I wish. And the Wolf Eyes side projects are playing in the basement because the upstairs was already booked. There are 3 Wolf Eyes side projects playing the basement: Aaron Dilloway, Dead Machines, and Miscarriage. It's going to be nuts down there.

also, TLASILA @ No Fun lineup = Tom Smith, Rat Bastard, Don Flemming

Russ, Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian - also, FYI, The BSC are playing the "Improvised & Otherwise" festival in Brooklyn in early May, and possibly in Brooklyn again in late June.

Russ, Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

what about The SB?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

re: The SB - we're not playing because the upstairs was full, and it's hard to do anything quiet in the basement because of the sound bleed from the mainstage.
That's why I didn't try to book The BSC either, altho I wanted to.
I stuck to booking bands that are relatively loud so it won't be an issue.

I will be playing with some people tho, 1st in the basement on Saturday night: Dave Gross, Don Rettman, Mike Przytarski, Mike Bernstein, Kris Abplanalp, and Greh.

Russ, Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet! esp. that Kris is coming to play it.

hstencil, Thursday, 29 January 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooooah, dudes.

This is the beginning of my spring break. I am definitely going to stay here for this, though. DEAD MACHINES should fucking rule.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
soon

Russ, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a theme to this show, or is just a mess of different bands together for no real reason?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to find a bus to NYC

SHOOM!

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

so, mr.gygax!. i'm glad that hanging out with stoned boys in dorms is more important to you than vietnamese food in sf with me. ian can take you to the damn prom, and take you home after as far as i'm concerned. i flounce off in disgust.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

WAIT A SEC, that's that weekend you're here? I'm so messed up. Sorry!

I will be here for Lauren. Sorry No Fun Fest, it'll have to wait for the west coast installment (please mr. peter rehberg, please come back to california again!).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Why can't ATP actually be a tour like lollapalooza?????????

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

don't worry about it!! i was just having a tantrum for the hell of it. you should totally come here because i'm not leaving until the 14th, and i'm probably not going to have much time in sf anyway. besides, key lime pie martinis! rooftop bars!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

what's ATP got to do got to with it?

Russ, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

wait a sec lauren! you're here 3/14-16!!! this is 3/19-3/22!!! am i not getting something?

also, are you gonna be in SF proper?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ATP has lots of the same people playing! (well, maybe not lots, but some.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

you're missing the fact that i'm really stupid. i somehow got it in my pea brain that this thing was the weekend before, despite the fact that the dates are right there at the top of the thread. so, um, yeah... come out here. it'll be rad.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Festivals are usually not my thing, though I will ABSOLUTELY be there for Saturday for Gert-Jan Prins (!!!!!!) and my buddies Dead Machines. Tempted to go all three days but fests like this are exhasuting and rumor has it guest list spots are 'scarce' - wot the fuk, Carlos??!?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.yoitsren.com/ianjon.jpg
Say hi to us!

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger/James

a. he would like to break even on the expenses he fronted out of pocket (plane tickets etc), and also pay the bands (and you and I both know he's not rich...supports himself and goes to grad school)

b. lots and lots of bands, each with a small list

c. it's a relatively small club (400 capacity), and all clubs set a cap on guest list spots. even a label (for instance, matador) has to pay the club if they want more spots (for press, label staff, etc) than what the club agrees to give the band / promoter / label / etc.

d. the tickets aren't expensive at all, even cheaper than comparable festivals. just sell some promos!

not every band even has a list
the bands playing in the basement do not
nor do those basement bands get in for free on the nights they're not playing

obviously it's not the ideal (everything for free for everyone ever), but I understand why it's this way.

I'd never even heard of gert-jan prins before this...

best,

Russ

Russ, Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo Russ

Hows it goin dude?

Anyway, you know I got nuthin but love for my man Carlos, it's just this:

"not every band even has a list
the bands playing in the basement do not
nor do those basement bands get in for free on the nights they're not playing"

really makes no sense whatsoever. I mean, shit, Clint and MSG managed to do OK without such regulations!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 4 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

MSG is a weasel though.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 March 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck off he's the man

roger adultery, Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend Mike from Italy is coming for this!

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm doing good, thanks.

I don't have an explanation beyond what I wrote above, nor do I really have any say in the matter.
I'll admit that as a prospective "curator" of the downstairs, those terms gave me pause, but I (believe I) was upfront with everyone beforehand, and I let the bands decide for themselves whether or not they wanted to do it.
Also, I know that Carlos has nothing but the best intentions here.

I don't know anything about the relationship between Clint and MSG and the club where they held their fest, but I'm pretty sure that when you count the upstairs and downstairs, there are lot more bands playing this fest than the Festival Of Music.
Thus, things get tighter.
Nearly everything upstairs was booked before I was even able to start booking the basement.

I asked Dead Machines to play because a) I really want to see them, and b) I figured both John and Tovah would be here anyway.
I just want to see friends play, you know?

James, if I neglected to tell John about this guest-list policy when I asked Dead Machines to play, I will buy you a ticket.

Russ, Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just reading the American Tapes / Hanson mailing list and I have decided that I should sell all the tapes of crap I have for $8 each in editions of like 3.

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

WELL YEAH, DUDE.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

THOUGH I THINK 15 IS THE STANDARD EDITION.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a tape of breathing noises overdriven and run through delay while there's all these shreaking feedback noises and arpeggiation and then like it goes "whooooooooooom...... whooooooooooom...... whooooooooooom......"

I was trying to sound like DREAD. hahah :( there's also noises of beer cans!

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Russ - no, man, yr right, John and Tovs told me about the policy, that's how I heard about it. Nah man $12 will definitely not kill me, its sorta just principle. And no way can I afford to go all three days even though I'm friends with a good 1/3 of the folks playing. It just seems a little strict to me is all.

Psyched yr curating - I shoulda known - quite a lineup!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

People who are there on the third day should definitly check out all of my friends playing the basement! Knifestorm & Japanese Karaoke are good dudes from home who I've known for a long time; awesome musics as well.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just a little bummed that I'll probably be busy running things downstairs, and may have to miss some of the upstairs action on those first 2 nights.

On the other hand, I'm totally excited to see all the bands I booked!

You should ask around, and see if anyone you know playing upstairs can hook you up.
Let me know what happens.
I still feel bad that you took off before I could pay you for that Wooden Wand show...

money money money.
the root of all evil.

Russ, Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

aww, don't worry about that. Most of the Vanishing Voice-rs are table scorers, dumpster divers and squatter-types. Money is no thang. We were glad to play. :)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Thurston Moore + Chris Corsano + Jim O'Rourke + Paul Flaherty

Worth it for this alone. They played at De Stijl in Minneapolis, as well as a De Stijl warm-up show at a dive bar in St. Paul. Fantastic.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed. All are in top form - good influences on each other. and that Flaherty thing at DeStijl totally looked planned but wasn't!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, the basement on sunday = where its fucking at.... man.... all my rochester peeps and my RI CRU!!!!!!!!!!! fucccccccccccck

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone who goes to this has to see air conditioning. HAS TO. don't even waste your time upstairs with all that "bleep, bloop, scratch, dribble, mumble" shit.

and don rettman! whoo!!!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 4 March 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Russ, Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

russ, would it be possible to post schedules too, however rough it may be?

thanks!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I will if/when possible.

all I know now is that it starts at 8pm on that Friday night, and 6:30pm on Saturday and Sunday, and that I'm going to try to start the bands in the basement at the end of each upstairs performance.
who knows if it'll actually work out that way...

also fyi, the basement is less than half the size of the upstairs.

Russ, Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the basement is tiny and thankfully has a much different feel than the upstairs main space, like being at a house show.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren, did you get my mail? hmmmm....

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it drives me nuts that i won't be able to attend. hopefully some kind of live document will follow this...

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, i did get it. did you get mine?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wow I just saw this this looks great:

http://www.monotract.com/nofun/nofunposterweb.gif

pretty sure that Maya from Double Leopards did that...

Russ, Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to be a dick, Roger, but what's wrong with forking over some dough to support your friends/other musicians/the organizers rather than being on a guest list? I guess I've never really had much of an opportunity to be on such a list, but I always figured I'd rather cough up the (usually) low dough so's someone involved with the show could at least buy themselves a beer or a sandwich or something for their efforts.

i'll be covering the event for the wire, and i'll have a photographer with me...if you see me, say hi!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This event starts the same night the remake of Dawn of the Dead opens. Coincedence?

When there's no more room in hell, the dead shall walk the earth...with their contact mics and distortion pedals, apparently.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff - not to be a dick but how often do you find yourself surviving on mayonnaise sandwiches and cashing in pennies from the sofa to afford a ride on a train?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 5 March 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough, Roger. I've got a steady corporate job that allows me some spending money for my hobbies/interests.

Ian - its a bar on 15th street - Gavin Brown's Passerby. I've never been there but should be a pretty killer show - Dylan is always great, we Vanishing Voicers are going to Join Inn, and Enos Slaughter always do

i didn't see this before the fest! i'm sorry i missed you, dude. kept on the lookout for the BOC bag, but didn't catch it. keep me up to date on when yr playing next or somethin. the fest was pretty rad; my faves: DEAD MACHINES, Japanese Karaoke Afterlife Experiment, Wolf Eyes, Double Leopards, Newtan as Fuck, chris corsano's mad drum skillz, to live & shave, and meeting all the fine faceless internet people.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 22 March 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

completely fucked up the whole time though. missed a few bands i wanted to see.

i had a 4 hour bus ride back with a kid that was fartin' up particles and reading evil ernie comics. so hungover i couldnt talk until 6 this evening.

brock (brock), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, wow, wow! No Fun ruled, totally. I met so many cool people I'd not met before, and saw many dear friends for the first time in months, years. Great Music! Can anyone say enough good things about Chris Corsano? Wolf Eyes? The Sonic Youth-sters definitely came to play - their three sections of the festival pie were very tasty! Who expected To Live and Shave to do a balls-to-the-wall drum + bass set? Wolf Eyes and Shave were my highlights. Only complaint - it was almost impossible to enjoy the downstairs music! Horribly hot, too damn crowded! The upstairs was alternately freezing and humid, but not nearly as miserable as downstairs. Japanese Karaoke rocked!

milly, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

forgive the bias, but I truly thought Dead Machines and Double Leopards totally smoked everybody. And out of almost 30 Wolf Eyes sets I've seen, that was their best.

Also great: Pengo

roger adultery, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

To Live and Shave to do a balls-to-the-wall drum + bass set

REALLY? what line-up was it? I know for a while there Smith himself wasnt even in the live group, they called themselves TLSLA2.

oops too much italics, second line there was supposed to be my question...

my name is limitless, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the two best sightings shows i've seen. the other one was a random night at luxx from which no one was expecting much, and they nonchalantly blew the roof off the place. i like them when they're so self-assured, grrrr.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

REALLY? what line-up was it? I know for a while there Smith himself wasnt even in the live group, they called themselves TLSLA2.

TLSLA2 was weasel walter's spinoff IIRC. The No Fun line up was Tom, Rat Bastard, Don Fleming plus Mark from Sightings.

My personal highlight of the festival was Air Conditioning (downstairs) or Pita (upstairs). Roger, I was looking for your BOC backpack.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

also: my voice is gone.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Another highlight: sidestage mosh pit (behind the velvet rope, stage right, by the door that leads backstage, if you were looking) that started when Carlos, Spencer Yeh and Tovah began drunkenly shoving each other during Wolf Eyes. Tovah then turned and shoved me (HARD) into Peter Rehberg, who joined our little 'pit' of five, which spilled out into the front. That's when all hell broke loose!

This was after DM Seidel (late of Golden Calves) decided to 'bring back the youth crew spirit' at one of the most inappropriate moments in the set by stage diving (and immediately getting thrown out)

Funnest. Gig. Ever.

some girl from Baltimore's Shrouc kept feeding me jim bean.

The second night of the fest I was outside with my friends, smoking pot. Someone offers me water, so I take a large gulp, only to have them laugh and tell me that it was everclear. bastards. the next night it was cheap-o scotch they were feeding me. (further elaboration of the noise=love theory)

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

TO LIVE IN SHAVE IN LA....

what did you think about the set?

brock (brock), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

re tlasila: i was downstairs saturday, hanging around in the northsix artist's lounge (or whatever it's called) with my fiance, drinking red stripes and listening in on the various conversations while we mixed it up with a very drunken italian pair. a door opened and i saw two guys peering into the screen of a laptop computer. other people were gathered around them; the sound of a very low frequency pulse was coming from the notebook. i sat up and walked over to what i later found was the festival's storage area for musicians' gear. jim o'rourke, alan licht, john olsen, and one of the guys from nautical almanac were moving through the room, while tom smith and don fleming, who apparently had commandeered the room as a production lab (!), were editing soundfiles on the laptop. i watched for a while as smith tweaked what later emerged through the club's p.a. as the tlasila set... the group that appeared at no fun was, as thurston moore said backstage, the "original line-up." rat bastard, fleming, and smith, with sightings' mark morgan (a person with whom smith has frequently collaborated - smith sang with sightings during their encore on day 3 of the fest). no clone silliness, no comedic interludes, just full-blown shave. it was mind-blowing! we were pressed up front as the set began - morgan was spinning out his usual harsh, angular riffs, bastard was working a joystick on some kind of mixing board to which were attached small electronic devices, spinning the sound to all corners of the room, and fleming was playing a vintage arp axxe synth and singing the intro (?) to their set. smith looked great - thin, healthy, kind of like a younger, much taller iggy in attitude without the cool hair or leathery skin (sorry, tom, if you're reading this), dressed in black. they improvised off morgan's guitar riffs for five minutes as tension mounted. smith sang into the audience without a mic, warmed up the moves to his manic funk dance (or maybe he just had to go to the toilet!), and brought the band's volume down as he hit a button on the laptop... sound began spinning around the club again - beats, very fragmented, sounding shattered. the volume built slightly, then... BLAM! 20 minutes later, my fiance and i were halfway across the room from each other, and i was screaming my head off for more of... what? what had just hit us? had tlasila gone techstep? for me, this was a genius act of reinvention, truly inspired. the beats were massive, brutal, with gut-melting bass. smith sang his brains out, morgan and fleming were in full guitar-hero mode, and rat bastard danced along with smith! rat's electrocuted funky chicken got big cheers from the audience... it was great seeing these guys - and undeniable innovators - back together again. smith was the last person to leave the stage, shaking hands and talking to fans for an hour... we spoke to him, and he apologized for being so sweaty... he gave us a set list. they performed "split lip", "black girl" (our favorite), "put you under", and "hour of the furnaces" (on which smith's vocals were amazing, just way-the-hell out there). so, that's my shave report. i loved many of the other sets (air conditioning, humectant, the unbelievably great wolf eyes, pengo, sightings, many more), and i don't mean to sound too biased. we came to see the shave, and we were not disappointed!

joe allen, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the TLASILA set was in quadrophonic, one set up at the top of the bleachers, one on the west wall of the club and then the stereo PA.

mark and don both added some extemporaneous vocals during the opening salvo.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck this sounds mindblowing! anyone know if this is just a one off or will they record/tour this version of the band?

my name is limitless, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly, it was the "last performance ever"™ ©

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

TLASILA: *AMAZZZZING*

if anyone has it recorded, hook it up dude.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax, when i spoke to tom after the set he told me that there's a new tlasila album due in april 2004 (the long-delayed, and apparently completely re-mixed "god and country rally"), and that there's a tour with the no-fun line-up in the works. they are officially back together, although they will probably only work together sporatically. fleming runs the alan lomax archive, bastard works full-time for an airline, smith is teaching and working on his master's degree, and mark's got another full-time band with sightings... maybe this will clarify the issue. it was not the last show! re wolf eyes: what an amazing set they performed!

joe allen, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

all nycers: go see Kites/Prurient/Sinking Body/some other dude at the knitting factory on the 31st. three of my favorite providence dudes bringing the noise&funk.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

joe, please treat my statement (ie, the quotes and trademarks) as skepticism in reference to several press items stating it would be the last performance.

also wasn't wigmaker in williamsburg 5 years in the making?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax - i understand completely. i hadn't seen many press clips before the show, just the time out and village voice articles. rat also mentioned a tour, so i'd tend to trust the actual group in this matter. you're right - "wigmaker" was a five-year-long production, as i recall. jeez, you'd think they'd work a little faster!

joe allen, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

joe

i was trying to get outa rat what he did for aliving but he presented the fact that the job was just to pass the time between lady watchin' in Miami. gorgeous 20-21 year olds seem to take up a little of his time as well.

brock (brock), Thursday, 25 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

rat bastard has an 18 charisma, no doubt.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 25 March 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to chime in here with this notion of Rat Bastard's charisma! I think that this is a great idea for a topic... Actually, no. I'll leave it to someone else. I really just wanted to say that Dead Machines were totally amazing at No Fun, that I hated missing Double Leopards (I was having dinner down the street and blew my opportunity to be slain), that I was rocked completely by Hair Police, that I hope Twig Harper never cuts his matted locks, that the guys in Sightings are fantastic people as well as demon musicians, that there should have been more female-led groups (and here's a big shout to Leslie Q, who ruled as a member of Arthur Doyle's troupe), that I was completely dazzled by Wolf Eye's wickedly ON performance, and that I was equally impressed by the depth of musical structure (rhythmically, melodically) and pounding hellishness (those whipping d+b beats) of TLASILA's Saturday closer. Kim Gordon was excellent too! She asked not to headline on the second night, knowing full well that no one can follow the Shave. As it turned out, she made the right choice for everyone. After the Shave set I saw Tom kissing KG's hand. Between Rat Bastard and Ohm Myth those Miami gals better watch out! Big complaint still lingering in my brain: why was it so hard to get a peek at the downstairs action? Every square inch of space was disgustingly crowded, and it was humid and stinky and wet and too many people! (I guess that means it was perfect for NOISE!)

double lepz twisted my intestines around the necks of my peepz. but that's ok, cuz i needed a messy out of body experience. jump cut to aaron dilloway, who is one intense motherf*cker. when he grabbed the reel of his ratty old tape recorder and jerked it back my brain got sliced and repackaged itself into convenient lunch portion sizes. pan left to sightings, who radiate bad vibez and kill without resort to hair care products. dissolve to tlasila, who brought heavy sound murder presence and show-bizz car alarmz to an evening otherwise devoted to kissing up to the soft edges of noise. and flashback to hair police, who also ignore grooming in their quest to combine the best elements of sufi trance and grandma's head in jet fan blade. air conditioning dripped freon on my elbow grease, so i rocked their songs with a cool can-do attitude. what a great festival...

Any photos available of the first night downstairs groups? Three Legged Race, in particular. Any photos or video available from the second night upstairs groups not pictured in Ian's gallery? I'm anxious to see action shots of Alan Licht, Gert-Jan Prins, Nmperign, and To Live & Shave LA. Thanks!

Yulia Koleskaja, Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

there were no less than 5 digicams filming downstairs each time i was down there. a guy named bob was doing a pro-quality tape of the upstairs from the bleachers (he's filmed sonic youth over 175 times).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, gygax. I look forward to them being uploaded. I didn't take my camera, and now - especially as a female, hstencil - I regret it. Oh, I made a mistake - I now see that there is one photo from TL&S. (More, please?) And are there any from Gert-Jan's set? I cannot tell... Light is dim, it is raining... Where is this Bob? How about one "pro-quality" tape of Three Leg Race!

"females don't need more cameras, they need to bring the NOISE.
(seriously the mostly-male lineup was slightly bummer-ish)"

True, there were fewer women involved, but noise is a male-dominated field. Note 1: not all of us are artists - some of us are happy to be fans (most noise dork-boys are thankful that we're there, and that we are serious in our appraisal of their music). Note 2: Ohm Myth's Tora festival was 50% female by design, but he was going for a "post-noise" vibe.

Dude, I brought plenty of noise! Those high-pitched "whoooo"'s during Gert-Jan's set were mine!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 28 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

um, I hope nobody misinterpreted what I posted - the idea is I'd like to see more women playing noise, not less. That opinion's based on how much I already enjoy the stuff those women playing noise are already doing.

And yeah, it would've been nice to see something involving Adris Hoyos at No Fun.

Did Carlos G. not think to invite Ms. Hoyos and her husband (Graham Lambkin) to the festival? Isn't Mr. G a veteran of the 90s Miami avant-noise scene which gave us Monotract, Harry Pussy & TLASILA??? Are they not on speaking terms? Calling Celebrity Justice!!

Yulia Koleskaja, Monday, 29 March 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello,

This is Tom Smith from TLASILA, Ohne, etc. Thanks for the thoughtful, flattering, and eyebrow-raising comments... Do any of you blog/ILM regulars have links to mp3s of performances from No Fun? I've got a few hours of DV footage (that I shot) from the three nights, but I'd enjoy having more audio, especially from sets originating from the Northsix downstairs. If you'd care to respond, I'd be much obliged. To those of you who saw our set and dug the vibe, thanks for being there. It was a great night for all of us.

Regards,

OM

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello Brock, Ian, gygax, Lil' Fancy Pants, and msp,

Re breakbeats: it's my favorite music, at least since 1997. How? When TLASILA was on tour in England in that year I met a woman who was the co-owner of a brilliant record shop that specialized in, for lack of a better phrase, all the cool genres. (I will be embarrassed by that sentence shortly.) Among their larder was a voluminous selection of d+b white labels, No U-Turn and Position Chrome plates, etc. She and her partners had immaculate taste - at least from my perspective. After our gig, she and I hit it off and soon began a long-distance relationship thing. While staying at her flat during a three-week visit later in '97 I received a thorough indoctrination. I must have listened to the "Torque" compilation at least 20 times through upon first encounter... It was just one perfect disc after another. Needless to say, I got hooked. Alas, many of my supposed peers did not share my enthusiasm.

Due to my very slow-paced production style (i.e., I take forever), albums like "Wigmaker," the recent Gravy "Band on the Run" disc, the forthcoming Shave album "God and Country Rally," etc., never seem to receive a release that runs in any coherent, chronologically way. This leads to a salient line of inquiry: Will future TLASILA albums reflect this (perceived) new direction?

Maybe...

For No Fun, Rat, Don, Mark and I just wanted to elevate the crowd, spread the (rabies-slathered) love, and blow the doors off the joint. We weren't interested in proving anything to anyone - we wanted FUN.

I trust that we succeeded, at least in some small way.

Thanks also for the new info re NFF sets!

Best,

Tom

Mea Culpa - I Google myself on occasion and troll the blogs after concert appearances and album releases. Please forgive me.

Tom Smith, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ulp! Just read the Dusted piece - Christ, I am one ugly fucker!

FYI: my days of hubris are long past, and I certainly do not think I am "the greatest" at anything. I work hard to improve, however. That is the best anyone can hope for... Blah blah blah...

Best,

TS

Did anyone catch the Dream Aktion Unit set at this fest? Because as I posted on the ATP thread (much to the general indiff of the indie blahsters), their appearance at Camber Sands was totally the highlight of the w/end for me - I've never seen Thurston Moore so totally ELECTRIFIED before

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw 'em...wrote abt them in the wire 'on location' piece i wrote! it'll be in the may ish

i've seen thurston moore be crazier before...i thought (and others seemed to agree) that he vastly eclipsed the other members of the dream aktion unit to the pt where it got kinda irritating bcz it was hard to hear & see what the other members were doing

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Authur Doyle ruled!

Lil' Fancy Kpants (ex machina), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Doyle was indeed outstanding. Overall, it was a tremendous success. So many wonderful performances, jolting surprises, etc. Odd, however, that the Mego/laptop contingent have been characterized as effete and out-of-touch for the non-physicality of the stage presentations of Pita, Massimo, etc. The glacial poles melt, and assumptions are submerged.

jhgooo lancelot, Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

if anyone has video from no fun fest and has the ability to burn to dvd-r, i'll pay money for that shit.

mikeijifjeifj, Sunday, 11 April 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Many who've responded to the thread have mentioned they shot video. Every night there were at least three guys on stage, and dozens more in the audience. On Soulseek, many performances are available for audio download. (Wolf Eyes/Dilloway, Hair Police, Burning Star Core, TL&SLA, etc.) It's out there for the taking.

jhgooo lancelot, Sunday, 11 April 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. yeah Adris was one of the first people I ahd in mind of course, but she couldnt do it for personal reasons that you will all probably eventually hear about (nothing bad, a really good thing actually).

Thurston himself was a little bummed about the dream aktion set not being one of their best. it was still better than 80/90% of the live music Ive seen in my lifetime.

Tom Smith is a genious.

everyone at no fun ruled from my point of view. if you like/are into the the mego stuff like I do/am, you'd found the pita, massimo sets tremendously rewarding. hits and tracks I had never heard before by them, both uplifting and hellish stuff.

in the future:
no fun 2004 dvd. edited by chris habib.
some sets might be officially released.

Oh my God - I was forwarded an email yesterday about upcoming To Live & Shave tour... Andrew WK - "Party Hard" Andrew WK - has apparently joined Shave as their DRUMMER! The mail assured that this was "for real", no bullshit. What is the connection? How? Where? Why? Can this be verified, or is this a practical joke? Isn't he metal-pop, not avantnoise? What?!

Andrew worked with Tom before.
Andrew mixed some TLASILA material at one point.
Andrew's been a TLASILA fan for a long time, and has name-dropped TLASILA in print.
Not a huge surprise...

Andrew put out a Masonna CD when he was in high-school.
He also recorded/put out a number of noise tapes and CDRs before he started writing songs.

You know, you're not banned on the noise board anymore, dork.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm aware. Thanks, pal!

I know I said this upthread, but to reiterate, Polly Shang Kuan Band are fucking great at the moment. Last gig was some heavenly sweet din. Show a little love for the Brighton contingent okay?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

there's music in new york now?

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Okay, who went to this thing then?!? Reports on my desk by 5 please!

NickB (NickB), Monday, 21 March 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

I went on Friday and Saturday nights. Off the top of my head, my faves were Mouthus, Heathen Shame, Dead Machines, Metalux. Giffoni's Death Unit (Carlos, Corsano, guitarist from Mouthus, drummer from Hair Police) totally destroyed. I'll see if any decent pics/vids came through when my camera battery is done recharging.

R&G didn't make it due to visa issues. A too-long video of japanese girls puking their guts up while Rudolph made noise was shown instead. lame.

Totally dead right now, having taken the redeye bus from NY to MTL to be at work. A bunch of bands from No Fun (Dead Machines, Pengo, Magik Markers) are playing here tonight for the CD launch of locals Et Sans, so maybe I'll have something to say about that.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I didn't go the first two nights.. First night saw Slint and second night fell asleep/pussied out. Last night was decent, what I saw of it. Double Leopards ruled. Missed Pengo cuz of getting in late, sadly. Magik Markers weren't as good as last time I saw 'em. I am sad I missed the downstairs the second night, cuz my friends played. I'm also sad I missed Dead Machines the first night. They were my favorite part of last year's fest.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

ah fuck, i wanted to see r&g. oh well.
