Dare You!

I had this great idea for a thread a couple of days ago but can't actually think of anything to start it off with. (So maybe it isn't that great!)

Anyway here's the idea - you dare another named ILMer to listen to a track of your choosing. Only one track. It can be one you think they'd like or not, up to you. If they accept the dare then they come back and post about it. Otherwise they are rubbish and you can point and laugh at them.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Geir Hongro to listen to Funkadelic's "Funk gets stronger Pt 1." - As melodic as funk gets.

Jedmond, Friday, 13 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was going to add a caveat to say don't all pick Geir!!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess - Hey Ya!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Scott Seward to listen to El-P's "Oxycotin" (not to be confused with "Oxycotin pt 2", featuring Cage; this one is floating around slsk on the "Collecting the Kid" album). I want to see what will win out: Scott's dislike of El-P (who does not actually have vocal duties on this track) or his love of creepy sludgy psych rock.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Jess' problem is that he hasn't heard Hey Ya!

I know Geir is an easy, but I honestly think he could actually love that track - anybody who says they rate melody has to (and if he shakes his arse while listening to the mel/at even better.

Jedmond, Friday, 13 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico I will listen to derek bailey's 'ballads' tonight to select a tune for you to listen to.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I want $$$ to listen to the New Pornographers' "The Laws Have Changed" and/or Deftones' "Back in School"!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry - replace "want" with "quadruple double bacon burger dog dare", please.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist Scientist, I dare you to listen to that "Get Low (Merengue Mix)" that Frank Kogan has been going on about! I'm not certain you'll like it but it might raise a smile. It's by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

*waits v.v.v.patiently. for all the pointing and laughing to start eventually*

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the merengue mix of get low is so damned funny - it's a hilarious track

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You've probably heard this already, but Tico Tico, I dare you to listen to Toshiyuki Honda's "El Bombero" from the relatively recent anime Metropolis (it's the fire fighting music).

We expect the people dared to report back on what they right?

Jedmond, Friday, 13 February 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i already told him to listen to the get low merengue mix! he did not have a strong reaction.

clthg, Friday, 13 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist Scientist, I dare you to listen to that "Get Low (Merengue Mix)" that Frank Kogan has been going on about! I'm not certain you'll like it but it might raise a smile. It's by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz.

I'm willing to listen, but not if I have to invest any bucks in it. Can someone send me an MP3 of it? You can just e-mail it to the address I have listed here. (I have never been able to download soulseek for some reason, probably a firewall thing.) I did listen to a 30 second sample of it, I think. Meanwhile I will look for a complete mp2.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 13 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Southall- "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere", Alan Jackson.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(if I'm correct, Nick, you'd despise that song intensely)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex In NYC: John Zorn's version of Ornette Coleman's "Chronology" from the album "Spy Vs. Spy". One minute and 8 seconds that might just open a portal into a huge scary new world....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard a bit of Zorn's work (mostly the Naked City stuff), but I don't believe I've heard this track. I'm certainly intrigued, though....big scary new world? Count me in. Stay tuned.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 February 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico have you downloaded Journey's shameless Abba pastiche "Mother, Father" yet

dave q, Saturday, 14 February 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

HaHa, stop kidding around, good Americans buy music. They don't download!

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Saturday, 14 February 2004 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist I might put it up on PopNose.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 14 February 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find that Journey song DQ :(

I will look for this El Bombero thing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 14 February 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tico Tico, I'm not sure if I should say it, but I've never even noticed that page before.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 14 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mother, Father" is on Escape, which should be available for a quarter and is well worth it for a pop fan.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 14 February 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa W, I dare you to listen to "Psalm" by Larry Lake (perf Lawrence Cherney).

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

on some thread I dared anybody and everybody to listen to Limp Bizkit's "Livin' It Up" and give me a detailed reaction. Nobody did.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Where can that be found?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Julio D' to listen to Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas"

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling, I dare you to listen to Scribe's "Stand Up" - seems to be available on slsk . . .

etc, Sunday, 15 February 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've found both Mother Father and El Bombero now.

Rockist that page is pretty new and also I've not been trying to publicise it cos of bandwidth issues.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico, I dare you to listen to the Wonder Stuff's "Who Wants To Be The Disco King?"

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(i chose that song because, yeah, i know you hate(d) the Stuffies, but i thought this song stood above the rest, and has a really nice chorus and ending)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the only Stuffies song from that time I never heard!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jedmond: I like "El Bombero" a lot, it's like Mr Driller playing jazz, or - since you gave me the firefighting context - an EyeToy game with a hose or something. I'm glad I listened to it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Mother Father - beyond the first 30 seconds I'm not sure about the ABBA thing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the fuck is Alan Jackson, Dom? I double dare you to listen to E2-E4 by Manuel Gottshing.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad you like "El Bombero", I came across it while writing a Uni assignment on music/sound (I can't remember) in film. I find chanting Japanese children always catches peoples attention when used in a DJ set.

If it helps you picture the scene better: Picture an evil scientists labrotory on fire as thousands of half spider half tennis ball robots pour down a staircase before merging together to form giant fire engines.

Jedmond, Sunday, 15 February 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

esoj, I dare you to listen to "The Eighties" by David Fonseca!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, Dan, and assorted goths: search for "Silence 4" in the file sharing program of your choice. I dare you to listen to whatever part of their ouevre is available!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Swygart, I dare you to listen to "This Year Is Mine" by Marit Bergman (Swedish Indie-Pop goodness!)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

jbr (if she's still around) - "A Queda Do Império" by Vitorino (it's in my miscalenous folder on slsk, username "boyo_rf")

(ok, I'll stop now)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico: dare you to listen to 'when your lover has gone' by derek bailey, from his 'ballads' record (its track 3).

''I dare Julio D' to listen to Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas"''

can you name a record with that track on and if I find it I'll listen.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - "I Believe in Father Christmas" is on Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Works, Vol.2, e.g., but it's also on several ELP compilations.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 15 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare you to listen to whatever part of their ouevre is available!

The band itself is called Silence 4?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

tico i dare you to listen to casiotone for the painfully alone's "toby, take a bow".

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I may have to take the pointing and laughing in that particular case.

Rockist the Merengue Mix is on PopNose now.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Where can that be found?
"Livin' It Up" is on Chocolate Starfish. It opens with an Eagles sample and Fred Durst dedicating the song to Ben Stiller. Later, after dissing Trent Reznor and Christina Aguilera, he announces that he's seen Fight Club 28 times and that he's a renegade riot getting out of control (he also dreams of women drinking champagne from seashells and notes that there's a microphone machete in the back of his truck). I think it's one of his most entertaining rap-rock numbers.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and he doesn't smoke pot but he loves the way it smells

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin Skidmore, I dare you to listen to Cheo Feliciano's bolero "Mi Triste Problema." (Technically his first name is Jose, but he goes by "Cheo" mostly, and know he's not that other Jose Feliciano who did the cover of "Light My Fire.") I think you might like it and feel some connection between it and Soul love songs. I can't remember what you said about Afro-Latin music generally, but I got the impression you hadn't heard much.

(I realize Martin Skidmore hardly ever posts here, so if anyone is in touch with him and wants to direct him to this thread, that would be nice.)

I can't offer any mp3 help, unfortunatly.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

esoj, I dare you to listen to "The Eighties" by David Fonseca!

ok. any clues to what i should expect?

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico, I am having the same problem I have had with a lot of other downloads (including slsk itself). All I get is a box with a circle, a squate and a triangle. I tried turning off my internet security (which includes a firewall), but I still got that box, which doesn't seem to allow me to do anything.

Any technical suggestions?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What machine are you using? I'm not sure how to help but other people might know.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Right click and 'save target as'?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just using an IBM clone. William, I don't think that's one of the options.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait! I think it worked. I was thinking save target as once the box came up, rather than clicking on the link. Okay, I'm going to eat dinner first before responding.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Geir Hongro to listen to Funkadelic's "Funk gets stronger Pt 1." - As melodic as funk gets.

Which album is that one on? I do like some Funkadelic, and although not quite as much as some early 80s funk they are definitely an example that funk may be melodic ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico vs Casiotone For The Painfully Alone Report:

I never met a Smiths fan I couldn't get drunk with. I've read (about) a few though. I reached to stop it but it finished anyway - no-score draw.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i am really amazed no one has come up with any for me.

xcept dave "cheeky pants" stelfox.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, fine then -

Jess, Bearsuit, "Itsuko Got Married"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel, will get round to yours in a bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Manuel Gottshining- E2E4

Nick Southall wanted me to listen to this so much he spelt the artist's name wrong. This is German, right? You can tell, all German dance music has that weird noise that means the song keeps threatening to turn into Copacabana. Possible soundtrack for robotic seduction. 7/10.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry wbs, that song doesnt seem to be anywhere on slsk...

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

OK then Jess, in addendum to the Rascal thread of yesterday: "Stopclock" by Fallacy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you listened to all 60 minutes, Dom?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And it's spelt Göttsching according to AMG. But they're shit at the moment. Too many users? Fah!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

60 minutes? The version I downloaded was one minute 24 seconds....

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Derek Bailey - When Your Lover Has Gone

Amazingly my lover has INDEED gone, off to the bedroom to watch TV. I think it was Casiotone that did the job though, not this which is rather pretty! I like the way it starts off with quite gentle, tuneful little clusters of notes, kind of wistful and meditative, and then he gets bored with that and starts slapping the guitar about a bit, and then it ends up with him playing something close to the initial clusters but much more assertively and forcefully. I think this is good, meaningful actually. It finishes very abruptly though - how long is it meant to be Julio?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC AND Donut Bitch - "Midnight On The Murder Mile" by Carter USM, please!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah? The full version is an hour-long piece from 1984. Not that I'm a bastard or anything...

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Less chatter, more Alan Jackson.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

PS. Call me a wuss and point and stuff but I'm not going anywhere near that song you suggested. You admitted you thought I'd hate it straight off. I sat through "When I Come Around" by Green day on VH2 instead.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i think my slsk is fucked because i'm not finding anything, period.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wonder Stuff - Who Wants To Be The Disco King?

"The radio's on but I don't hear a song! Turd is the word to describe what I've heard!"

HOW BAD IS THAT RHYME??!! Also is the B-Side called "Was Your Reporter Even At The Same Gig?"

Canute-style anti-dance music single from I'm guessing '88? I don't hear the great chorus DB hears, I have to admit - "A Wish Away" is much janglier and prettier. A nasty, bitter little band - no need for reappraisal but thanks for that one good laugh.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My slsk goes all searchless sometimes Jess - shut it down and restart, that sometimes works.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess - I'm on soulseek now and I have it. thingummy99.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, there's wbs's song with 97 people queued ahead of me.

no fallacy, which is weirder, since i've at least heard/heard of him.

ah, xpost.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom leave The Wonderstuff alone. They were great. Try "On The Ropes" or "Sleep Alone" instead. And also try "So Let Me Go Far" by Dodgy.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico- about 3:15 or something.

''It finishes very abruptly though''

Actually the album is a bit like 'Loveless' at times where one track will blend into the next (its not like that all the way through, 2-3 tracks and then one will feel like an ending, with the one second gap like you usually get on albums).

Glad you liked it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, I've upped my allowed uploads...

Tico & Edward O - The Finishing School, "Destination Girl" -if not off Soulseek, it's up at the Track & Field site, http://www.trackandfield.org.uk

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, maybe I upped it too much. My PC is going to be running like a Ryman League centre back for a wee bit...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico, I like it ("Get Low Merengue Mix"). It is pretty funny. I liked the part where they call out the different nationalities, since that's such a standard thing to do. It's one of those songs that "sounds" faster than it is (to me anyway). The actual beat is brisk but not at the fastest speed possible for merengue. I think the vocals and overall busy feel of the track makes it seem really fast. Anyway, I would dance to this.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fallacy album had some weird copy-protection malarkey going on with it, let me see if I can get it on my account.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, not just for sterling - dom, jess, tom - scribe's "stand up". New Zealand hip-hop single by a formerly very underground MC that was the longest running #1 in the 2003 charts here (& #1 album, The Crusader); production by P-Money.

etc, Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess - Itsuko can also be found here:

http://www.bearsuit.co.uk/mp3.htm

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find that song anywhere on the T&F page William, am I being dense?

I have a dare for The Lex and Alex Fack! "You Gotta Be A Hustler If You Want To Get On" by Sue Wilkinson. "wilkinson hustler" should do it search-wise.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.trackandfield.org.uk/mp3s/DestinationGirl.mp3

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, Fallacy's "Stopclock" is currently being shared on slsk.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My Connection just went. Arse.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's back now, but there is a wanker of a queue on Slsk.

Southall - The Corrs - "Only When I Sleep"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

bearsuit - "itsuko got married": opening few seconds sound like young marble giants; the latter part sounds like native hipsters crossed with something on mid-period kill rock stars. actually it just sounds like my headache. i can honestly say i will never listen to this song again.

downloading fallacy.

nick southall should listen to a guy called gerald's "nazinji-zaka"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow I kind of guessed that might be the case. My headaches tend to be a lot slower, though, and feature The Vocals Of Kelly Jones.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ironically, i think if it was slower, i might like it more.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Not if it featured The Vocals Of Kelly Jones you wouldn't.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess - excellent call on the Gerald!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex will have to fwd me the mp3.. I can't get accepted in slsk :(

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the chorus near the end where there are different chord changes and the wah wah at the end of "Who Wants To Be The Disco King?". But it's cool you followed through with the dare, Tom. :)
(the single was early 1989, otherwise, it would have gone on my 1988 cdr comp instead of "A Wish Away".. and i disagree that "Turd is the word to describe what I've heard" is THEE WORST rhyme ever.. there have been far worse rhymes)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, "Funk Gets Stronger Pt 1." comes from Funkadelic's "The Electric Spanking of War Babies".

Jedmond, Monday, 16 February 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa W, I dare you to listen to "Psalm" by Larry Lake (perf Lawrence Cherney).

Sundar... Can't seem to find it anywhere.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, I dare you to try the Moonbabies' "Crime o' the Moon."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

trying to dl the scribe now. may be a while before i get it.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Finishing School, "Destination Girl"

Um. It's rather nice, isn't it? Actually, I only remember the bits with the lovely violin in it, but rather pleasant as this sort of thing goes. Organ's good. Okay, it's good.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 16 February 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico: "Mother, I just can't get enough", New Radicals
Anthony Miccio: "The Telephone Answering Machine Song", Paul Evans

Michael B, Monday, 16 February 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

SWygart and Dom are trying to make me commit suicide! Jess - I remember tryign to get that song a while ago but couldn't find it - I'll look again tonight at home.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick I'll rip it today so I'll be sharing it by then.

i will look for them, dave. i am still waiting on that bastard fallac track. is now when i say i liked (but not loved) "the groundbreaker" and "big n bashy" and just be done with it?

Alex in NYC AND Donut Bitch - "Midnight On The Murder Mile" by Carter USM, please!

I've heard it before. Meh. What's your point?

Next person to speak ill of the Wonder Stuff gets a hex put on them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex there was no point! I thought you might like it!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It was just going to be Donut Bitch cos he'd thrown a late-80s BritIndie track out at me first but I was listening to it and thought you'd have something interesting to say about it too. Better luck next time I suppose.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah I see. It's okay, but they were never much my cup of venom. I did quite like one of their b-sides, though. "RSPCE".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mother We Just Can't Get Enough"

Actually this reminds me of "Hey Ya"!!

I knew this one before, it's one of the good tracks on the New Radicals album, OK it's 'the other good track' on that album.

I might post about it again.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

geeta, I dare you to listen to the DDR Nationalhymne! It's much bettah than that lied der deutschen bollocks (also it was never covered by Nico)

The Sue Wilkinson track mentioned upthread is now also on PopNose.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

fallacy - "stop clock" (finally): this is interesting. it makes dom's antipathy towards grime both understandable and more confusing. werid combo of crunk low-end bathysphere booms/skittering snares and a premier-esque piano run. the chorus sounds like throbbing gristle. we'll say...unexpected. not sure if it's entirely successful on it's own terms.

tico tico should listen to east flatbush project's "tried by twelve" if he hasnt heard it already.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Marit Bergman, 'This Is The Year' (assuming that's the one you were referring to)

Starts unpromisingly, her voice is a bit flaky and all over the place. Then it picks it up, then picks it up some more, and so on... by the end it's full on mentalism. I can't remember a more perfectly timed entry than that trumpet... yes, I really rather enjoyed that.

In return, Mr RF - Maow - 'Wank'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Fallacy (or Fusion, one of those two) produce Dutty Doogz 'Hold Me Down'?

scg, Monday, 16 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(I now have Soulseek (but my CD drive is still read only, or whatever the proper way of saying that is). Now I am forced to think more about what sort of risks I am willing to take and what I really think about the ethics of this downloading stuff. I admit, I'm a lot more concerned about the potential for being sued than the ethical implications.

The first song I downloaded was "Hey Ya!" for irony's sake. It's okay. I wasn't sure if I had heard it, but I have. I just forgot what it sounded like.)

I downloaded "modern art" by art brut, it's okay musically, could do with a little less structure and some more twiddle-y bits, but they have one of those typical histrionic/shouty singers. I will download Formed A Band if I can find it. They'd be better if they got a singer who sounded more like Bruce Dickinson and if they started singing about Ancient Greece or something, with guitar solos.

scribe: stand up -- this has the "we are the champions" type roc-a-feel but is really missing with this nappy guitar solo which is all tweaky instead of crunchy and no sampled female vocals.

the rapping isn't that exciting, and there's very little in the rap:guitarwaank ratio though.

the go/flow rhyme is also painful.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see a Jess Harvell play-by-play on that one Polyphonic Spree single that's all over the place. NB this isn't because I think he'd like it.

Mum And Dad - "Dawn Rider"

It's pretty good, it's got a kind of Suicide throb meets hippy girl-group ba-ba-ba feel to it. If the idea of that kind of canon-shuffling gives you a thrill then you'd really go for it I reckon. The 'middle eight' bit is lovely, very pretty, it pretty much saves the song from the kind-of-boring biker iconography it starts off with. The whole thing makes me think of The Hairies out of SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN and their giant vehicle on which they rode the ZOOMWAY, and that can't be a bad thing. Hit!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a dare for The Lex and Alex Fack! "You Gotta Be A Hustler If You Want To Get On" by Sue Wilkinson.

Ooh I didn't see this thread until today. I am trying to Soulseek this song but nothing appears to have come up so far. There is an old lady who goes to my parents' church called Sue Wilkinson so the title is amusing me a lot!

I think it would be nice if Jess listened to "iieee" by Tori Amos, Dom listened to "Lacuna" by Carina Round, Tom listened to "Raspberry Swirl" by Tori Amos, William listened to "J'en Ai Marre" by Alizée and everyone listened to "Legend Of A Cowgirl" by Imani Coppola.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Lex - it's on PopNose, which you can find by going to Freaky Trigger, then NYLPM, then following the link on the right hand side.

also try soft inside by tanya stephens if you ain already, jess. not a dare, i just reckon you'll really dig it

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tom! I am downloading it now.

(Jess, was that before Tori discovered the joys of electronica? If not ah well, but if so I still recommend it - this is Tori sans piano.)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

del feat. heiro - "burnt": ah, 1988-1992 (i have no idea when this was recorded, but you get the idea, i think.) whenever i hear new stuff from this era (or sound), i am always surprised by how minimal it actually is: like there's the beat, there's the voices, and compressed into this tiny band between them are all the other frequencies bled together. (it might be a function of old school samplers, i don't know.) but so often it's just being carried along by the rappers voice and the piano fleckle or whatever is just ballast rather than a "hook", so when the guitar comes in (if yr listening!) at 1:52 it's like a major scene change even though it's still near-subliminal. maybe it's just because this is heiro and i'm dealing with hindsight, but it's pretty easy to see this as a stepping stone to the whole present undie rap schema (speaking of compression.) but then you remember that 75% of rappers rapped like this back then. it's good. i'd probably put it on a mixtape as a pallette cleanser.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

jody do you know the name of that polyphonic spree single? nothing is coming up for "polyphonic spree 2004".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sue Wilkinson, "You Gotta Be A Hustler If You Want To Get On"

I love this: it's the kind of joke song you never get tired of. It almost sounds like Sue Wilkinson is dictating a Disgusted-of-Tunbridge-Wells type letter to be sent to the Daily Mail or something - she sounds deliberately scandalised, but of course she also knows that that type of woman would revel in other people being hussies, and would love to be one herself. I love the way she pronounces "hussy!" at the start of the second verse. For some reason the Sally-and-Sue narrative reminds me of "Sk8r Boi", though I haven't worked out whether 'Sally' is equivalent to the ballet girl whose snobbishness paid off, or whether Avril is the pop-punk version of Sally.

The piano is cool, it's like listening in on a child's piano lessons, and those intermittent twangs are fun as well.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo, did you find the Stars of Heaven song? (prob. dislike it but you like The Clientele so...)

Michael B, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

michael i found one person sharing it, but there were maybe 97 people ahead of me. the person sharing it hasnt been back online since. i really am trying to get everything though!

tanya stephens - "soft inside": dave's right, this is aces. gullier than i expected with a title like that! (haha i guess i was expecting something along the lines of that track on the last saint etienne...) not exactly "streetsweeper" levels of griminess (it's pretty upbeat with piercing metallic horns), but stephens is so forceful on the chorus she could be talking about a wound.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

really reminds me of someone like patti labelle on it. wailing, camp, ghetto-diva business

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Glad you like the Wilkinson Lex - you're right it's her delivery that's the thing, it's a joke song which completely transcends that by the, well, acting really. My favourite bit is the little voice-crack on "what she's done and where she's been".

Tried By Twelve report coming up Jess.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tried By Twelve"

Every copy of this on soulseek seems to come from a different mix CD. This one is from 'DJ Babu'. Anyway I assume when the piano comes in = the start of the track.

I like it. The guy has one of those thin voices that always sounds colder and crueller on these kind of lyrics than beefy voices do. The version I downloaded is a radio edit - it's always blackly funny when you hear gangsta stuff with swears blocked out, like hearing "shit" is going to corrupt a young mind more than "I'd rather be tried by twelve than carried by six". Speaking of which this is a great example of how one killer line/image can carry an entire track. The piano hook works perfectly for the lyrics and is pretty unobtrusive in what I think of as a 'classic' hip-hop way.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dr.Stein" by Helloween

Great stuff - Muppet-Metal about a mad doctor making creatures who turn into rock musicians. Good hooks, entertaining solos, what more could you want? I love how the solo dovetails into the campy organ vamping. Should be a minute shorter than it is.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I may have misheard "great procession" as "rock musicians", in which case points deducted.

The Beatles sample at the end is very funny.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, Jess mostly OTM re Del (am reviewing his best-of for City Pages and repeatedly emphasized "this type of flow is what amateur backpackers have been trying to do for years"; also gave Divine Styler some credit for the whole early '90s Cali 'no gats just skillz' proto-indie-rap scene) -- it's the b-side to (I believe) "Mistadobalina" and the thing I like about it is that it keeps that ("Synthetic Substitution"?) break but changes loops for each MC's verse; one of those individuality/cohesion tug-of-war type posse cuts that balances out well. Now all we gotta do is keep post-J5 indie producers from rehashing it to poor(er) effect.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Lex - I've had J'En Ai Marre since spotting it in Mr O's singles of the year - it is smashing, isn't it? Best bit the 'Nuh. Nuh. Nuh. Nuh!' just before the chorus. Luvverly.

so, in reciprocation - French Kicks - 'Young Lawyer'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

2Live Crew- Get It Girl

2Live Crew a more a punchline than a band, aren't they? Like Butthole Surfers or Shed Seven. Hmmm. I know they were, like, SHOCKING THE POPULACE in the 80s. Question being: how? With this? They sound like Run DMC messing about in the studio. I mean, this is "But I can bust you down with mah supahsperm" levels of offensiveness. You can't be ign'ant and offer to "hug and kiss" someone. So, yeah, your standard post-Raising Hell basic drum malarkey, and then they decide that they want shoehorn some disco into the song about two minutes in. They then say "dick" and "pussy" and fake some orgasms. You know, for kids. So, in summary, Sum 41.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not that bad, actually, just... am I missing something massive here, or has all of their press been completely innacurate?

(also: iTunes has just segued from this into Tori Amos. Well done iTunes)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - William, I already have "Young Lawyer" too and like it a lot, especially the falsetto backing vocals around the two-minute mark. I like "So Many Cakes" better off the Young Lawyer album though.

In a vague attempt to recommend/dare you something you might not possess - I think you'd like "Sway" by Bic Runga.

Wait, which Kaito? The Kompakt one or the guitar-rock one?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm beginning to think dom is terminally anhedonic

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Guitar one.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah, you want to know what I get pleasure from? Jess, "Little Ole Wine Drinker Me", Dean Martin.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

JEL! I can't find Pop-Off Tuesday! Can you gimme some pointers?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Maybe" - Emma Bunton

Be careful what I wish for? What, am I not supposed to like this? Is it supposed to be some irredeemably butt-ass post-Spice debacle, instead of some effervescent ba-da-da-da-da Ipanema drive-by that has me shake my tax-calculating tushie while simultaneously making me wistfully nostalgic about a group I once actively loathed? If you're really trying to put me off, you need to try harder, madam.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad you liked it, but I didn't really expect anybody aside from me to enjoy it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i think daver should download jeff mills - "the extremist".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ba da ba da ba.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Jess should download Liz Phair - "Rock Me".

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Strongo - does it matter which mix?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

good question!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"the original mix" i suppose.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Diablo - you seriously underestimate the Bunton-love round here.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm queued up for the original & retro mixes, & there's also DNA & fusion mixes floating around, too. I might just get all 4 & do a li'l taste test thing.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey swygart: Different Trains (america before the war) by steve reich.

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

''I dare Julio D' to listen to Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas"''

am looking for this, didn't get the LP yesterday but it won't be long.

I accept jel and toby's dare.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is so sadistic! Why is everyone daring everyone else to listen to such patently crap music?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

both tracks I listed I consider to be "good"

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Lex- I have Carina queued.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't want this thread to die. *I* will accept a dare,

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jole, the thread isn't dead; it's just big-boned.

Anyway, Jole, I'm gonna go out on a limb and DARE YOU to give a listen to: Camberwell Now - "Daddy Needs a Throne" (which, conveniently enough, is available on my website, I believe - look on the right side of the page, under DIGITAL LOVE).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Daver! http://www.pickled-egg.co.uk/pop-off-tuesday.htm but not the track I suggested but there are some other MP3's!

Tico, how do I find the Rupee song?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Jole - I have no idea about your music taste so I will arbitrarily dare you to hear "Take Me Home" by Thea Gilmore.

William - I have downloaded the Mates Of State, will pass judgment shortly.

(xposts!)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Daver, go for As Evil Dance.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jole vs. "Daddy Needs a Throne"

Starts in the eighties mode popular on ILM. I like the synth. Drums could be tighter. Vocals are nice. Good song! Rocks out at the end! I think it could have done without the growly bit.

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(Can anyone suggest offhand somewhere I could upload a 9.4 MB mp3?)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You could zip it up, Sundar, if size is an issue.

I could host it, too, but I wouldn't be able to put it up until later tonight (around 7-8 PM).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

D/L'ing as we speak.

Jole - The Communards - So Cold The Night.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa: I just set up a Soulseek account and put "Psalm" up (I think it's "03 Psalm.mp3"). My user name is "sundar". Let me know if it works.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 26 February 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel - if you're on the 'seek it's in my Soca folder (mymble2) (I'm not actually on now though).

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 26 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico and Geir* (a funny combination, I guess), I dare you to listen to Frankie Ruiz's "Desnudate." This is one of my favorite salsa songs (which makes it one of many, but still). I used to think that it was just a sweet and sentimental song, but it's actually saying (roughly): you done me wrong, stop lying to me, take off your clothes and show me the truth. Or that's roughly how someone explained it. Anyway, it is a very sweet sounding song, but when the percussion comes into the foreground it's so strong.

This is soulseekable.

*And anyone else wanting to sample a salsa song I like.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't accidentally download "Deseandote," which is pretty good, but not as much of a favorite. (This isn't like Arabic titles where you grab anything close.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(One thing about mainstream salsa: I don't think it's possible to like it unless you like timbales.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar: You're never on!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be on tomorrow (Mar 1) from 4:15 pm (EST) till at least 8:30-9. Probably all night though. Let me know if that's any good. (I have to do it from school.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Swygart, I forgot to reply: very much enjoyed that Maow track, it's like a lost Undertones single or something.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Tracer Hand to listen to Joe Arroyo's "Rebelion" (which may be mis-spelled as "Rebellion"). Very standard salsa anthem that somehow manages not to get old.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't accidentally download "Deseandote," which is pretty good, but not as much of a favorite. (This isn't like Arabic titles where you grab anything close.)

If this sounds patronizing, let me say that I accidentally downloaded "Deseandote" thinking it was "Desnudate."

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "Desnudate Mujer" the same thing?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes!

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That's prob. the full title. I found it under "Desnudate."

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The song is from 1987, incidentally.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa, I should be logged in now. I should be able to leave my connection on from now on provided no one switches off the computer.

Julio, I dare you to listen to "Life In a Glasshouse" by Radiohead.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 1 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I accept (I was just replying to an email from you).

actually I should make a one CD for these dare tracks and the focus group.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"La Cura" is an allowable substitute for "Desnudate Mujer." In fact, I think the former is a perfect song, which I don't quite feel about the latter. I haven't seen it available on slsk so far.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare someone to do a Negative Approach POX thread NOW!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

did you manage to find the scribe, tom?

etc, Monday, 1 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, and I forgot my dares too.

Lex - I was initially a bit "Oh, OK then" about the Fiona Apple track, but I heard it today and it did actually really grab me... I may expand later.

Jole - it's a bit odd, isn't it? Not the kind of thing I'd usually go for at all, but I did like it. Again, may write a bit more later.

And since Southall's ducking out of anything with guitars on - Zan Lyons, "Suicide".

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar: You're not sharing files!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious (if you are out there), I dare you to listen to Grupo Niche's "Han Cogido la Cosa." (Let me know if you can't get hold of it.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My challengee response rate is not very impressive so far.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Gar, I'll get this figured out by tomorrow, I swear. Thanks for your patience Melissa!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a way I could transfer directly to you tomorrow evening?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have MSN messenger?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Scribe and Desnudate have been located and will be reported on later.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Kaito, "Go"

I like it because it has certain Daddino-tugging qualities, namely a spasticized motorik beat and nice shouty bits (and some subliminal cooing). But I feel like I have to wait too long for the payoff (ie, the shouty bits) and by the time the final shouty bits comes on it feels like they milked the gimmick for too long -- the song should've been a minute shorter.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 March 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So, Swygart -- Exuma, "Exuma, The Obeah Man"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico, still waiting. (I would be glad even for a negative response at this point.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Do I take it that "Psalm" didn't go through completely?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, sorry, it did... I don't have a very clear opinion of it though.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
i dare ronan to download aphex twin's "xtal".

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

and tico, i think the "tried by twelve" version you d/led sounds quite far removed from the original. no sitar?

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

did you hear the scribe track, tico? apparently they're using his other big single on CD:UK (I have no idea what this is tho) in yr part of the world; mentalism.

etc, Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone dare me

SLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha oliver wang has the scribe track up on his mp3 blog!!! if anyone wants to listen to this & say what they think, it'd really mean something to me & my pathetic curiosity about what furriners think about nz pop music.

etc, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
This is two years late but I suddenly remembered I had four dares.

Radiohead 'Life in a glasshouse': I never bothered w/them after OK computer but I really enjoyed the backing track right from the beginning flying saucer 'futuristic' bit to a straight jump to the '1930s-type' piano/trumpet/clarinet (all melancholically played, of course). Yorke's voice/paranoid persona rubs me off the wrong way: he does like his 'packed frozen'/sardines metaphor doesn't he? And always so cryptic when he doesn't have to be: he doesn't talk politics but he happens to be EXACTLY doing that, throughout, by not talking. 'But someone's listening in...'. Yeah, the world is man...BUT whatver I loved the drumming slabs w/the clarinet. A great ending so it balances out fine.

My other dare ws Alice Cooper 'give the kid a break'. It could be in the same ball-park as the radiohead: someone's listened in ('must've been something I said') and he's taking him in. Zero-tolerance. Even though there is a rocky-horror vibe and jokes (the backing singers suudenly turning against Alice), its more of a chill - something about that 'in the frying pan' and him reflecting ('some imperfection: in my soul or in my head'). The happy days background just made it all darker.

Greg lake 'I believe in father xmas': like these casio-keyboard bleeps underneath the xmassy brass (?) (round one min in) but I dunno, hate how anything commemorative, like xmas tunes, seems to write itself. Maybe if I heard this round july it might be better. And he reminds me of John Lennon in a 'serious' mode. The ending sounded too long and big and its like he wanted to ram the seriousness and ends up awkward.

This ws all two years ago, so getting me to listen to 'i luv u' when UK garage was sorta uncharted waters for me (even more so than now) ws nice. I loved it straight away. I like 'luv u 2' w/the chinese strings, too. For some reason its really cute w/the "i-i luv u" talking doll voice.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Ha, I never noticed that Julio ever replied. This was kind of a fun idea.
