eleki-san (eleki-san), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot stop listening to "Centuries of Sin" off the new Probot album. Hearing Cronos sing again brought me right back to those acne-speckled days of metalheaded adolescence.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a tie!

Either Dear Nora's "Springtime Fall" (a glorious rip-off / appropriation of the Beatles' "And I Love Her") or Dimmer's "Drop You Off" (which has me thinking that I might wanna schtupp (sic) Shayne Carter).

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Saturday, 14 February 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if its kicking my ass per se, but I actually listen to Tal Bachman's "She's So High" all the way through when it comes up on the radio (which is surprisingly often). I'm trying to figure out why.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 February 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

R. Kelly's "Step in the Name of Love (Remix)," one of the best pure R&B singles of the past 12 months. Which I just got into this week, 'cause I'm a dork.

Yeah, I've heard all their albums. Only half of "Gift" is any good, but that half kicks my ass every time. It kicked my ass in 2001, and I listened to it for the first time in ages last night and it kicked my ass while I slept and into the morning.

"Galang"-MIA (thanks, Fluxblog!)
"Notre Prof D'Anglais"-Chantel Kelly
"Givin' Up"-The Darkness (this sounds so much like a rockin' new wave song to me, it could have been an outtake from Mad Love. Except for the unsavory lyrics, I guess.)

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 14 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Elected - 7th September 2003; gets big props for intro + mention of my birthday - not the 7th itself, but in fact, "fifteen days" later!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The last two tracks of Iron & Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days. Sam Bream's version of the south sometimes seems more Martha Stewart than Flannery O'Connor -- "Passing Afternoon" has a "perfect bed" and bougainvillea seeds -- but maybe that's exactly why I respond to it when I do.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael White - Spirit of light
Apples in Stereo - Pine Away

B Fleishmann's cover of Torn

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyrics Born & Lateef the Truthspeaker "The Last Trumpet". Sometimes it seems as though style and substance are unnecessarily divorced from each other in hip-hop, that it is implied that one must be sacrificed for the other, and that often seems to be the case for these two MCs in particular, but this song...whew. One of the most powerful songs I ever have or ever will hear.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

it's on the 'Good Luck' single - i still haven't listened to it and i bought the thing!

Listen Steve, listen! It's the tops. I thought the Jaxx normally fleshed out their singles with remixes.

Last week it was Curve, this week, "Crazy" by Galaxie 500 is leaving me for dead.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

LFO - "Simon From Sydney", because I've been haunted by the tune on a current car ad for the last week, and have finally located my copy of Frequencies to confirm that it is indeed an oddly anaemic cover of the above-mentioned LFO tune. I mean, why cover a minimalist electrotech tune? Weird.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney: "Toxic"
Charles Trenet: "Que Reste-t-il De Nos Amors?"

Jody Rosen, Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Toxic" owns me right now. There's a part of me that's still fighting the fact that it's by Britney Spears. Those string flourishes are just over the top enough.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm almost embarrased to say it but "Chemistry" by Semisonic.

"No Love Like That" by Jonathan Fire*Eater

After listening to all the lost children of JFE clogging up NYC, I realise that there's nothing like the original and best, for Stuart Lupton (sp?)'s beautiful and dark Bret Easton Ellis meets Charles Dickens at the Great Gatsby's house party poetry.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 4 November 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking about this thread this afternoon when Tommy Smith's "Constellation: The Morning Star" was completely kicking my arse. He's a jazz saxophonist, this track's got a fairly languid intro, then after about a minute the sax and trumpet hit this big riff together, and the drumming gets really martial (in a jazzy way) and then there's some brutal solo-ing, a vaguely Egyptian feel, for some reason I'm reminded of the Grand March from Aida. Trumpet comes back in, they build to the big crescendo, drums get thwacked, arse = kicked.

The Bad Plus's version of Queen's We are the champions (from the Blunt Object live album) - the track begins as though Freddie Mercury were in fact Erik Satie.

The audience whoops periodically as the trio rend the song asunder. I think there should be more sophisty-jazz versions of pomp-rock classics. Pater-rock!
